Candy Marie Smith, 62, of Nodaway, MO passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at her home in Nodaway, MO. &nbsp;She was born September 4, 1962 to Robert and France (Pierson) Culver in Verdun, France. She married Mickey Smith on July 29, 1988 in Amazonia, MO and he survives of the home.

Candy was the “go to” lady in the Home Depot Gardening Center. Others always came first to Candy. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and decorating for holidays with her family. &nbsp;

Survivors include her mother, husband; children, Kyle (Brittany) Smith and Jeremy Smith both of Nodaway, MO; brother, Remy (DeAnna) Culver of Savannah, MO and numerous family and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her father and daughter, Brandy Smith.

George Raymond Wilson, 64, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at Mosaic Life Care. He was born July 3, 1960 in Hiawatha, KS, son of Ethel and George Wilson. 

He worked at B&amp;R Insulation for over 20 years as an Asbestos Removal Supervisor. He loved photography, was an avid diver which he enjoyed diving in caves and spending much of his time in nature, often exploring Loess Bluffs Wildlife Refuge and watching eagles. 

George was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Rick Wilson and Robert Roberts, sister, Mary Ann Teeter, brother-in-law, Ernest Best, Sr. 

Survivors include siblings, Johnny (Kathy) Roberts of Jonesboro, AR, Pam (Terri) Wilson of Harker Heights, TX, Donald Roberts of St. Joseph, Mary Lou Wooden of Highland, KS, Terry Roberts of Savannah, MO, Martha (William) Gerling of Liberty, MO, and Lynda (Mitchell) Sherman of St. Joseph, sister-in-law, Sherry Wilson of Flemington, MO, numerous nieces and nephews.

John Howard Foley 85, of St. Joseph, MO., passed away Friday, November 22, 2024 at the Cameron Veterans Home, Cameron, MO. He was born November 7, 1939 in McPaul, IA, son of the late Lucille and Francis Foley.

He graduated from Central High School class of 1957, then joined the United States Marines Corps. After his discharge he returned to achieve his degrees from Northwest Missouri State University BS ED, then a Masters in Education, and later obtained a degree in Library science. He married Karen Comte on April 29, 1990 and she survives the home. John retired after 37 years of teaching from Benton High School, teaching world history, government, and then became the Librarian. He was an avid gardener, excellent cook, he loved everything South Side St. Joseph, and was an avid history buff for St. Joseph and Benton High School, writing the 2 volume book "A Centennial History of Benton High School 1905-2005" which contains a complete list of all the graduates in that time period. 

John was preceded in death by his parents, 1/2 sister, Dorothy Sandusky, sister, Sue Gering, and 1/2 brother, Bill Foley. 

Survivors include wife, Karen Jean Foley of the home, sons, Michael (Corina) Foley of Nixa, MO, and Ryan (Lelana) Foley of Grain Valley, MO, step sons, Daniel (Maggie) Sullivan of Bethel, Maine, Michael (Rachael) Sullivan of Charlottesville, VA, and Sean (Chris) Sullivan of London, England, step daughters Meg (Jorge Neves) Sullivan of Narrowsburg, NY, and Erin Sullivan of Alexandria, VA, sister Mary Lou Gerstner of St. Joseph, MO, and 17 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Kevin Ray Derry, aged 60, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at Mosaic Life Care. Born on November 11, 1964, in St. Joseph, he was the beloved son of Helen (Shanks) and Lawrence Derry Sr.

After completing high school, Kevin served his country in the US Army, and was a proud member of the VFW. He worked at Silgan Containers, and had a passion for shooting guns, as well as knife and axe throwing.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Devin Derry, and his siblings, Lawrence Derry Jr., Bobbie Jo Arnold, Mark Riley, and Bobby Riley. He is survived by his son, Michael D. Elaine (Chapman) Dunster, aged 75, of Savannah, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Born on April 15, 1949 in Salt Lake City, UT, Elaine was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, who cherished her family above all else.

Elaine graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She married the love of her life, Garry Dunster, on August 1, 1973, and together they raised a beautiful family. Elaine was passionate about home schooling, sewing, and gardening, and she had a deep love for learning and teaching.

Elaine was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she found great joy and community. She is survived by her husband, Garry Dunster, and their seven children: Jeffrey (Gracie) Dunster, Katy (Cullen) Williams, Randy (Shantelle) Dunster, Anthony (Jessica) Dunster, Emily (Casey) Porter, Kimberly Dunster, and Saralee Dunster. Elaine was also blessed with 15 granddaughters and 15 grandsons, who brought immense joy to her life. She is also survived by her two brothers, Doug and Mark Chapman, and three sisters, LaRue Howells, Jan Engle, and Arlene Bassett.

Elaine was preceded in death by her father, David Chapman, her mother, Fern Lillian Chapman, and her stepmother, June Chapman.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday November 30th, 2024 at the Bennett Lane Cemetery, located at 12938 Hurley Drive, Savannah, MO. Betty Ruth Anders Beaver, 82 of rural Agency, Missouri passed away on Friday, November 22nd, 2024 at her home, surrounded by her family. Betty was born on October 5th, 1942 in Camden, Arkansas to Bertha Everlean (Cason) and Otha Anders. She graduated from Fairview High School in Fairview, Arkansas where she was an active student in extracurricular organizations and excelled in academics as an honor student.

Betty was joined in marriage to EJ Beaver in June of 1960, from this union they welcomed 3 sons Edwin JR, Roger, and Jonathan. They settled in rural Agency with their growing family. At this time she also furthered her education by enrolling at Missouri Western, graduating in the class of 1972 with her bachelor's degree in education. With her degree she worked with students with learning disabilities. Being nominated as teacher of the year twice. She was employed with the following schools though her years of teaching: Mid-Buchanan, St. Joseph School District, and the Doniphan County Education Cooperative. She collectively taught for 30 years. In addition to teaching, Betty also devoted her teaching talents to numerous programs within the schools with programs such as Learning Disabilities Program, Preschool Screening Program, Adult Basic Education and coached numerous sports through the years. She also worked at Red Lobster for 18 years while teaching.

Betty was active in area programs such as the Pony Express Association of the Blind, where she served as president for several years, the Missouri Council for the Blind, Board member of OATS. She was also a member of the Hope Fellowship Church.

Survivors include sons, Edwin Beaver, JR. (Patsy), Jonathan Beaver (Kelly), Grandchildren, Brandy Knight (Ryan), Brooke Gunter (Jacob), Christopher Beaver (Katie), Amanda Anders, Great Grandchildren, Marley Knight, Matthew Beaver, Nathaniel Beaver, Brynlee Beaver, Caleb Cook, Carter Cook, and Violet Cook.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Brother Johnnie Anders, Sister Sherry Lynn Grulick, Son Roger Beaver, and Daughter-in-law Vicky Beaver.

Evelyn Ann (Tiller) Barnes 1936 - 2024

Kenneth P. “Kenny” Bachman, 63, of St. Joseph, MO passed away unexpectedly on November 20, 2024. Kenny was born on October 26, 1961 in St. Joseph to Louis and Anna Mae (Kruse) Bachman. Following his graduation from Lafayette High School in 1981, he attended Missouri Western State College for two years and subsequently completed Over the Road (OTR) training in 1984. For the next thirty years, Kenny took great pride in enjoying a successful trucking career and traveling from coast to coast. He earned numerous awards for his committed service, and his stories and souvenirs from the road were well-loved. He was known to make friends wherever he went.

Kenny’s caring, compassionate heart was an especially powerful example to all. Even when he had but little, he was known to support others generously, sharing with a spirit of abundance to ensure others had their basic needs met. Kenny was deeply authentic and reverently irreverent, ever putting others at ease with a contagious laugh and smile all his own. A quietly supportive force, he never let the fact that he faced and overcame numerous challenges from youth onward hold him back from living his own thriving life.

Preceding him in death are Kenny’s father, Louis E. Bachman, paternal grandparents, George and Emma Bachman, and maternal grandparents, Joe and Anna Kruse.

Kenny is survived by his mother, Anna Mae Bachman, for whom he deeply cared, his siblings, Linda Judah (late Weldon Judah) of Kansas City, MO, Ed Bachman (Jill Fannin) of Lafayette, CA, Janice Priddle (Doug) of Kansas City, MO, his nieces and nephews, Deana, Abby, Lucas, Sarah, Lauren, Ben, Sean, Blake, and Sage, for whom he cheered warmly along with their growing families. He found great joy in recent years to know his great-nephews and great-nieces, and his presence will be missed by all who survive him.

Kenneth P. “Kenny” Bachman, 63, of St. Joseph, MO passed away unexpectedly on November 20, 2024. Kenny was born on October 26, 1961 in St. Joseph to Louis and Anna Mae (Kruse) Bachman. Following his graduation from Lafayette High School in 1981, he attended Missouri Western State College for two years and subsequently completed Over the Road (OTR) training in 1984. For the next thirty years, Kenny took great pride in enjoying a successful trucking career and traveling from coast to coast. He earned numerous awards for his committed service, and his stories and souvenirs from the road were well-loved. He was known to make friends wherever he went.Kenny’s caring, compassionate heart was an especially powerful example to all. Even when he had but little, he was known to support others generously, sharing with a spirit of abundance to ensure others had their basic needs met. Kenny was deeply authentic and reverently irreverent, ever putting others at ease with a contagious laugh and smile all his own. A quietly supportive force, he never let the fact that he faced and overcame numerous challenges from youth onward hold him back from living his own thriving life.Preceding him in death are Kenny’s father, Louis E. I was a lifelong fan of the Missouri Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs. My most memorable times included: Don driving me through 49 of our 50 states; our trips to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and the Orange Bowl in Miami to watch Missouri; the monthly "Club" meetings; and the "laugh-ins" with my sisters.

I was preceded in death by my parents, my husband, Don, my daughter, Dyanne, my grandson, James, all my siblings and their spouses.

Stephen Clifford Crouse died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of November 21, 2024.

He was born June 1, 1947, as the eldest son of Clifford and Margaret Crouse (nee Grier). Stephen was a lifelong resident of Easton where he attended the local schools. After graduating from Easton High School in 1965, he attended Missouri Western College and graduated with a history degree. With his father and brothers, Arthur, George, and John, Stephen was a dairy farmer and farmed the soil that his great-grandparents, George and Vollie Crouse, began tilling in 1894 as a Buchanan County pioneer farm. In his free time, he was an avid reader and collector of historical books and decorative objects.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Brian Crouse.

Stephen was a lifelong member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Easton.

In addition to his three brothers, Stephen is survived by his sister, Marilyn Rittenberg, brother-in-law Michel Rittenberg, sisters-in-laws, Cindy Crouse, DiAnne Crouse, and Diane Crouse. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Bethany Crouse, Matthew Crouse, Andrew Crouse, McKenzie Beech, Ryan Rittenberg, Camille Acosta, Jami Dodge, Jill Mead, and Jessica Wilson, and thirteen great-nieces and nephews.

Throughout his illness, Stephen appreciated deeply the generous love and support of his two sisters-in-law, Cindy and DiAnne Crouse, and cousins, Charlotte Holeman and Patty Sweeney.

He is survived by two sons, Clint (Holly) Grier and Kurtis (Amanda) Grier; grandchildren, Kyle Grier, Ruby Grier, and Clara Grier; great-grandson, Stetson Grier; brother Ellis Grier; other relatives and many friends.

Terry Jann, 62, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024.

He was born July 29, 1962 in St. Joseph, MO to James and Mary (Hazelrigg) Jann. He grew up on a farm outside of St. Joseph. He graduated from Savannah High School and later received his bachelor’s degree from Missouri Western State University. For the majority of his life, he was employed at New York Tech Supply Inc. as a sales manager.

He married Joanna (Prokop) Jann on June 13, 1998 in Passaic, NJ. They shared 17 years of marriage together and two children.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Baldwinsville, NY. He enjoyed studying American History, watching classic cinema, and spending time outdoors. He will be remembered for his tireless work-ethic, his generosity towards others, and his unwavering faith.&nbsp;

He is survived by his former wife, Joanna Jann of Syracuse, NY; two sons, Matthew Jann of Syracuse, NY, Derek Jann of Syracuse, NY; his brother, David Jann of St. Joseph; numerous cousins. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and James.&nbsp;

Janeia Mae "Nina" Anderson, 44,&nbsp; passed away on November 21, 2024, in Saint Joseph, Missouri. She was born on July 21, 1980, in Bartow, Florida, to Sherri L. Burns and David L. Anderson.

She was a graduate of high school, where she formed many friendships. Her career as an inventory specialist was marked by diligence and a strong work ethic.

Nina was an avid horse rider. The thrill of the casino brought her excitement, while she also loved coloring books. Nina was considered the neighborhood mother, a testament to her nurturing spirit and the open door of her home.

Her memory will be cherished by her mother, Sherri Burns; her children, Cara Anderson, Cassandra, and Kielynn Rose Anderson; her sister, Teresa Atkison (Harold Owens); her brothers, Joshua Ray, Jonathan David, and Daniel Anderson; her five grandchildren; and numerous family members and friends.

She was born January 13, 1936 in Springfield, Illinois to Clarence and Nell (Clemens) Manis. Bonnie grew up in Athens, Illinois, where she graduated from Athens High School in 1954.

Bonnie lived most of her adult life in Springfield, Illinois, where she worked in administrative support at GMAC for 30 years until retirement.

She then embarked on a second career at Farmers Insurance in Springfield, where she worked for 20 years

Bonnie married David Gates on May 25, 2002. The couple loved traveling together, having visited all 50 states and Europe. They enjoyed 18 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on October 20, 2020.

She was a lifetime member of Athens Christian Church.

Bonnie was a devoted wife and enjoyed spending time with friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David; and her parents.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda Lynch (Randall); stepchildren, Linda Craig (Jim) and Jim Gates (Susan); seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Geoffrey “Grimm” Nichols 1986 - 2024

Richard Ernest Childress was born to Luther Ernest Childress (deceased) and Anna Marie Childress (of Hiawatha KS). He is one of 5 siblings. He was born on March 23rd, 1948 in Aberdeen Washington and lived his early childhood years in Hoquiam Washington. The family later moved to southern California where they spent their childhoods living in various parts of the Orange County area where he remained into his 20s.&nbsp;

Richard served his country in the US army as an E6 Staff Sergeant and was wounded in action during his 2 year tour of duty in Vietnam. He received an army commendation medal for his meritorious service and acts of heroism! &nbsp;

After returning from Vietnam he met and married Debbie and the two settled in Hiawatha KS where they raised a family. Richard continued to live in Hiawatha until he passed away on the evening of Sunday November 17th. 2024.

Richard was a born again Christian saved by grace and his loved ones find comfort in knowing that he is in the presence of God enjoying perfect health and peace!&nbsp;

Richard is survived in death by his mother Anna Marie Childress of Hiawatha KS, sister Meria (Steve) Harness of Fairview KS, sister Judy (Michael) Shirley of Horton KS, brother Ronald (Beth) Childress of Hiawatha KS, Janice Cook of Corona Del Mar CA, his children Matthew (Andrea) Johnson of Ladera Ranch CA, Wayne (Lisa) Childress of Shawnee KS, Abigail (Jeff) Compton of Hiawatha KS, David (Briana) Childress of Hiawatha KS, Marianna (Kasey) Milne of Overland Park KS, Bethany (Jeremy) Tarwater of Lenexa KS.

Richard lived a storied and full life, in that life he held many titles and positions and was known as many things, son, brother, husband, father, veteran, sergeant, farmer, trucker, patriot, nephew, uncle, cousin, friend, neighbor, but if you ask him the title he held in most regard and of which he was most abundantly proud was the title of “papa”!&nbsp;

“Papa” leaves behind EIGHTEEN treasured and greatly adored grandchildren, Andrew 18, Kyler 18, Bentley 17, Jaxon 15, Mason 14, Ashley 14, Leighton 13, Tildyn 13, Ellianna 12, Ethan 11, Ava 9, Lillian 9, Cora 8, Kaine 8, Ryane 7, Anabel 7, Evelyn 4, and Banks 20 months.

Richard Ernest Childress 1948 - 2024

Joseph Lawrence Pflugradt, 82, of Gower, MO passed away November 19, 2024.

He was born on September 13, 1942, to Andrew William and Lillie Mae (Simpson) Pflugradt in St. Joseph, MO where he grew up and attended Benton High School. Joe joined the United States Navy where he achieved the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class during his first enlistment. He served on the USS North Hampton CC-1 known as the “Floating White House” and was part of the naval blockade for the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his honorable discharge he returned to the St. Joseph area.

On November 1, 1963, he was united in marriage to Sharon Kay Calloway. After their marriage they lived in Easton, MO for 27 years. In 1990 they moved to Gower, MO where he made his “Mountain on the Hilltop” home.

Joe worked for General Motors in Fairfax he built homes and later retired as a boiler operator from St. Joseph Light and Power after 42 years of service.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid East Buchanan Sports fan, especially the Lady Bulldogs Softball Team. He was known for his many walks around the Gower area. Most of all he loved his family and being “PaPa Joe”.

Joe was preceded in death his parents Andy and Lillie; and his siblings Lillian Stevens, Andy Jr. Pflugradt, Henry Pflugradt, Sr., Dorothy Seevers, Larry Pflugradt and Mike Pflugradt; and his son Joseph “Little Joe” Pflugradt.

He is survived by his wife Sharon Pflugradt; daughter Cindy Gordan, Jody (Deron) Adkins and Andrea (Randy) Reiley; grandchildren Jarrod, Erica, Ashley, Hunter (Alex), Hannah Jo (Taylor), Nick (Kasey) and Kinna (Kyle); great- Theodore, Cassius, Logan Joseph, Vivian and Nolan; numerous nieces and nephews including Jay Pflugradt, other relatives and many friends.

Military Honors with Funeral Service 3:00 p.m. with visitation following the service until 6:00 p.m. Friday, November 22nd at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower.

Inurnment will be held later at St. Jospeh Catholic Church, Easton, MO.

Dolores Jean Wood, born December 4, 1931, in Atchison, KS, to Carl F. and Rose M. (Enzbrenner) Wagner, passed away on November 17, 2024, at the age of 92.&nbsp;

She attended Mooney Creek elementary school and the Mount St. Scholastica Academy for three years before graduating from Atchison High in 1949. Growing up during the World War II era, she was forced to grow up fast, leaving home in her early teens to care for elderly family members. At the age of 19, she married her husband of 56 years, "Bud" Lawrence Wood, on May 20, 1950, at Sacred Heart Parish where they were both parishioners until its closing. Together, they built a life on their farm, raising livestock, selling eggs and tending a large garden each year while also working full time jobs in town.

In 1967, after her children started high school, she began working at Mullin's Brothers Hardware Store, later transitioning to Rockwell/Atchison Casting, where she dedicated over 20 years. Dolores and Bud enjoyed hosting gatherings at their home for holidays and seasonal parties such as Octoberfest, traveling to Branson, supporting charitable causes, spending time with grandchildren and devoting much of their free time to caring for elderly family members.

Family members remember her as a left-handed, feisty, funny, independent, smart and hardworking family-oriented woman who was amazing with numbers, encouraged education, hard work and the pursuit of goals. With beautiful handwriting she enjoyed sending letters and cards to friends and family. Having a green thumb, she knew all sorts of tips and tricks for growing better fruits and vegetables. She was an amazing cook and would always send you home with a “care-package”. She will be greatly missed by her family.&nbsp;

She remained in her home after her husband's passing in 2006, living there until her own death.

Dolores was preceded in death by her brothers Wilbur, Melvin and Gerald Wagner; grandson Thomas Wood; and son-in-law Charles Noll. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Noll of Nortonville, and son, Stephen Wood (Deanna) of Atchison; her sister, Mary Newell of Oskaloosa; along with 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial to celebrate the life of Dolores will be on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Atchison. A rosary will begin on Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. followed by visitation at the church. She will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Marie Margaret (Ernzen) Landwer, who lived a long full life of 90 years, passed peacefully on November 16, 2024, at her home in Henderson, NV.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian burial will be on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Church, 19286 234th Rd, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. the church before the mass.&nbsp;

Christa Wilson 56, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Saturday, November 16, 2024 in Kansas City, KS. She was born October 25, 1968 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Tama and Leslie Auten. 

She graduated from Benton High School Class of 1986, &nbsp;and went on to get her BSN at Missouri Western State University. Christa worked at several area nursing homes and hospice facilities, including Kendallwood, Three Rivers Hospice and Saxton Care Chateau. She was a very talented vocalist who loved to perform and was apart of many ensembles including Benton Singers and the plays, as well as the Missouri Western Community Choir. Christa was also member of Abundant Faith Church of God. 

Christa was preceded in death by father, Leslie Albert Auten, and husband, Jimmy Wilson. 

Survivors include mother, Tama Auten of St. Joseph, MO, sister, Dana (Jon) Haywood of Caruthersville, MO, son, Chandler (Emily) Green of Saint Joseph, MO, and Larry Laroy Sample of Chattanooga, TN, nephews, Spencer (Lauren), Casey (Amanda), and Taylor (Brittany) Haywood.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Friday, November 22, 2024 at the Abundant Faith Church of God. Funeral service and public live stream at 11:00 AM. The Inurnment will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery, at a later date.
