Franklin T. Thackery, 97, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
He was born December 11, 1928 to Finley T. and Mary (Lavak) Thackery in Grant City, Missouri.
He was the beloved husband of Alma I. Bunker, whom he married on August 2, 1959.
He followed his older brother Russell and enlisted in the US Navy in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1952. Using the GI Bill, he began his education in Maryville(now NWMSU) and completed his law degree at the University of Missouri in 1957.
Franklin devoted his professional life to the practice of law and to public service. He served as a prosecuting attorney in Worth County, where he carried out his duties with fairness and dedication. He later entered private practice with Utz, Litvak, Thackery, Utz, and Taylor, where he continued to serve clients with skill and professionalism. His legal career reached another distinguished milestone when he was appointed as a division 2 Circuit Court Judge, a role in which he upheld the law with wisdom and a strong sense of duty.
He served two terms on the Board of Governors for the Missouri Bar, contributing his experience and judgment to the advancement of the profession. He was also a member of the St. Joseph Bar, where he was respected by colleagues for his knowledge, leadership, and steadfast dedication to justice.
Franklin was deeply involved in civic and fraternal organizations as well. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Moila Shrine. He also served as Past President of Southside Rotary Club #2306, demonstrating his commitment to community involvement and the betterment of others.
Franklin was also a faithful member of Ashland United Methodist Church, where his presence and commitment were an important part of his life. After retiring, he created numerous woodworking projects for family, friends, and Ashland UMC. He was a lifelong fan of the Missouri Tigers and Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Jewell Hooker, Rosemary Alloway, and Russell Thackery.
Survivors include his wife, Alma; sons, Greg Thackery (Dora) and Doug Thackery (Lisa); granddaughter, Kristen Russell (Derik); grandson, Sam Thackery; great grandson, Harrison Russell; numerous nieces and nephews.
Farewell Services and Public Livestream 3:00 P.M. Sunday, April 26, Ashland United Methodist Church. Inurnment Grant City Cemetery. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Ashland United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
