Darrel House, 83, of Gower, MO passed away February 24, 2023.

He was born on June 29, 1939 to Milford Hadley and Sarah Pauline (White) House in Starfield, MO. Darrel grew up in the Starfield area and graduated from Gower High School.&nbsp;

On October 23, 1960 he was united in marriage to Luray Davis. After their marriage they lived in Gower where they made their home. His wife, Luray, passed away February 25, 2011.

Darrel was in computer sales for over 30 years and he received many awards.

Darrel was a member of the Gower Christian Church where he served as an Elder, church board President and held many committee chairs. He also served on the board for the East Buchanan School District and the Gower City Council. Darrel was a 60-year member of the Gower Masonic Lodge. He served on the Mid-Continent Ball Association, he enjoyed coaching softball and was a softball, baseball, and football official. Darrel also coached trap shooting for East Buchanan FFA. He thoroughly enjoyed reading Louis LaMour books and fulfilled his dream when he met him in person.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Betty Ann House, and a nephew, Eric House.

Darrel is survived by his daughters, Cynthia (Rich) Benz and Stephanie (Andy) Phipps; grandchildren, Tabatha (Zack) Craft, Jacob (Chelsea) Phipps, Amanda Benz and Kiera Benz; great-grandchildren, Taryn, Zayn, and Willa; brothers, Gary House and Dale House; nephews, Scott (Kim) House and Carter (Lauren) House; and many friends.

Dennis K. Campbell, 75, of St. Joseph, passed away, February 24, 2023 at his home after a lengthy illness. Dennis was born April 13, 1947, in St. Joseph to Charles H. and Mary Alice (Smith) Campbell.

He graduated from Lafayette High School and received a Bachelors of Science in Biology from the University of Missouri - Kansas City.&nbsp; He worked in healthcare for over 40 years.&nbsp;

Dennis served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam Era; receiving an honorable discharge in March of 1973.

He married Deborah J. (Seibert) on June 16, 1973 in Hanover, PA; and she survives.&nbsp; Also surviving are son Matthew Campbell (Morgan), daughters, Alison Anders and Laura Chandler (Shy); eight grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Dennis enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Conservation Department.

Memorial services will be Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at 11:00 am at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Military honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Evon Bert Austin, known to all as “Catfish”, 82 years old of Smithville, Missouri peacefully passed away at home on February 24, 2023 surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren.&nbsp;

Catfish was born on October 17th 1940 to Bert Francis and Erma Elmira (Royster) Austin in Wright County, Missouri. At the age of 13, Catfish battled polio and emerged with a strong will, and determination to live life to the fullest. After Catfish graduated from Hartville High School in 1959 he went to college for a year and then entered the work force at Owens Corning Fiberglass in Kansas City, Kansas from which he retired in 1986 after 26 years. He then spent much of his time enjoying his grandkids and his passion for fishing and hunting.

In 1967 he married Mary Joann Jenkins in a small ceremony in Ava Missouri. They were married for 55 years at the time of his passing. They had two children Janet Lea (Austin) Brooks of Platte City Missouri and Scott David Austin (Janice Bolin) of Kansas City, Missouri. He enjoyed time with his seven grandchildren. Samantha, Matthew, Marcus and Austin Brooks (Janet’s Children) and Regina Bolin, Jack and Jordan Austin. (Scott’s Children) He had five great grandchildren Rory, Leif, Mila, Norah and Lane. (Janet’s Grandchildren).

Catfish and Joann started their dream of Smithville Marine in 1983, catering to the Bass Fishing Industry that Catfish had been a part of most of his adult life. Joann ran the day-to-day business with Catfish’s guidance from shortly after it was formed until they sold it in 2016. Once they sold the business, they spent time together enjoying their cabin in Canada and their home in Zapata, Texas.

&nbsp;A Visitation will be held at Hixon-Klein Funeral home in Smithville Missouri on March 1st from 5:30 pm- 7:00pm. With a Celebration of Life Service at 7:00 pm.&nbsp;

Funeral Services will be held at Craig-Hurt Funeral Home in Mountain Grove, Missouri Saturday March 4th with a visitation at 1:00 pm and service immediately following at 2:00 pm.&nbsp;

He will be laid to rest in the family plot at Hillcrest Cemetery in Mountain Grove, Missouri.

Ellis L. McGuire Sr. 84, of St Joseph, MO, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. He was born June 29, 1938 in St. Joseph, son of Dollie (Gilbert) and Ivan McGuire. 

He graduated from Benton High School. Ellis was a US Navy Veteran, serving on the USS Mississinewa. He worked for the St. Joseph Fire Department, retiring after 24 years as Captain. He also worked for Simpson's Sawmill. Ellis enjoyed hunting and fishing, and making knives and long bows. He as a Mason and member of King Hill Mason Lodge # 376 A.F &amp; A.M. 

Ellis was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Susan Zirkle, Mattie May McGuire and Joyce Ellen McGuire. 

Survivors include: sons, Ellis McGuire Jr. of St. Joseph, Terry McGuire of Clarksdale, MO, Mike (Stacy) McQuire of Braymer, MO, and Patrick McGuire of Sedalia, MO, daughters, Holly Miller of Bolivar, MO and Jennifer Miller, sisters, Clover (John) Watkins of Independence, MO and Ellen (Harold) DeShon of Clarksdale, MO, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Karen Kay Anderson, 72, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023.

She was born November 30, 1950 in Marshall, Missouri to Leonard and Katherine (Flair) Schmidt. She grew up in Alma, Missouri, graduating from Santa Fe High School in 1969.

After earning her certification in cosemetology, Karen became a hairdresser at her own salon in Slater, Missouri. She then relocated to St. Joseph, where she worked for Regis and then J.C. Penney salon, where she spent 11 years.

Karen loved sewing, quilting and cooking, especially for family dinners. She was known for her dinner rolls and would make an extra pan for her grown children to take home. She also enjoyed going to garage sales and estate sales. Time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was most precious to her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her beloved dog, Lily.

Survivors include her children, Kari Carver, Marla Brown and Justin Anderson (Rhonda); grandchildren, Ashley Carver, Jeremiah Barks, Daniel Carver, Mackenzie Borchers (Morgan Jolliff), Benjamin Brown (Hannah Hill), Ryan Anderson, Blake Anderson, and Hunter Anderson; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Brunkhorst and Dorothy Strack (Larry); numerous extended family members and friends.

Karen Kay Anderson 1950 - 2023

Bradley Bernard Blevins, age 66 of rural Robinson, went to be with the Lord on February 23, 2023. He passed peacefully at his home with his family by his side. His battle with cancer over the last year showed how he faced life’s challenges with courage and optimism.

&nbsp;He was born in Hiawatha on December 6, 1956, to the late Roy “Bernie” Bernard and Virginia Lea (Gysin) Blevins. He was the second youngest of five siblings; the late Sandy McRae (Steve), Janet (Jim) Cyphers, Curt (Joan) Blevins, and Cathy (Bill) Clark.

Brad grew up on a farm in Highland Kansas, he attended 1st&nbsp;– 4th&nbsp;grade in White Cloud and 4th&nbsp;-12th&nbsp;in Highland, where he graduated with the class of 1974. After high school, Brad attended Highland Community College and graduated in 1976. Following college, Brad pursued his dream of farming and raising livestock northeast of Robinson with his father and brother. His father retired in 1995 and Brad continued to farm and raise livestock alongside his brother until 2021. During their partnership, one brother was rarely seen without the other and they were known to do all the tasks of the day together. In 2022 he joined forces with his nephew Jesse Clark, and grandson Jace Grubb, to form Triple 12 Cattle Company.

Brad was the quintessential farm boy: loving tractors, trucks, and loud pipes. Brad was an amazing cook, and his family looked for any excuse to gather to enjoy his food. Brad was a lot of fun to be around. In his youth he was very onery, a trait he passed onto his grandchildren and something he never really outgrew. Brad was a happy man, always ready to have a good laugh.

On July 17, 1993, Brad was united in marriage to Julee Edwards at the Zion United Methodist Church, she survives of the home. During their nearly 30 years of marriage, they enjoyed antiquing, canning, fishing, hunting, vacationing, spending time with friends and family, and following their grandchildren’s many activities. They formed an amateur photography duo; traveling around taking pictures of their grandkids and other kids of the community at sporting events.

Brad had three daughters, Carrie Lofton of Olathe, KS, Brandee (Tim) Flowers of Overland Park, KS, and Amanda (Curt) Jacobsen of Hiawatha, KS. He was blessed with seven grandchildren Taylor Jacobsen, Jace Grubb, Triston Lofton, Lillian Lofton, Cooper Jacobsen, Haven Reber, and Harper Flowers. Also surviving are his siblings Janet Cyphers, Curt Blevins, &amp; Cathy Clark. His many adventures with his grandchildren showed how he had a way of making them all feel special. 

Recently his grandson Cooper gave a speech at school about the impact Brad had on his life. The speech included the following poignant comment: “Papa has made a great impact on my life by showing me to be there for family, how to have fun, to be positive, and to find joy in everything.” This comment sums up the way Brad lived his life, staying focused on his family and laughing with them along the way. Outside of his family and work, Brad’s passions were collecting firearms, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of the Bethany United Church of Christ.

Brad was preceded in death by his wife LaDonna Sutter whom he was married to from 1983-1992, his parents, and his sister Sandy McRae, his grandparents Leland and Armilda “Millie” Gysin.

Celebration of Life Service is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday, March 2, at the Bethany United Church of Christ, with Pastor Shane Spangler officiating.&nbsp; Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

Bradley Bernard Blevins 1956 - 2023

Leonard L. Hundley, 75, of Atchison, Kansas formerly of Lancaster, KS passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, at his home unexpectedly. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, Feb. 28th, 2023, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Fr. Jeremy Heppler officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Monday, Feb. 27th, 2023, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Benedicts Abbey or the Benedictine Sisters of Mt. St. Scholastica and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Leonard was born on April 23, 1947 in Atchison, KS the son of James L. and Virginia M. (Dunn-Ball) Hundley. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1965. Leonard served in the Army National Guard and served in active duty during Vietnam. He worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation as a engineer technician for many years retiring in 2002. He also worked and helped on the farm. Leonard was a member of the First Christian Church, former member of the ELKS, and the V. F. W. Post # 1175. He enjoyed fishing, hunting especially deer, bird, and pheasant hunting. In his younger years enjoyed fast muscle cars. Leonard was married to Barbara Zabel on Sept. 12, 1981. She survives of the home. Leonard L. Hundley, 75, of Atchison, Kansas formerly of Lancaster, KS passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, at his home unexpectedly. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, Feb. 28th, 2023, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Fr. Jeremy Heppler officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Monday, Feb. 27th, 2023, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Benedicts Abbey or the Benedictine Sisters of Mt. St. Scholastica and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Leonard was born on April 23, 1947 in Atchison, KS the son of James L. and Virginia M. (Dunn-Ball) Hundley. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1965. Leonard served in the Army National Guard and served in active duty during Vietnam. He worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation as a engineer technician for many years retiring in 2002. He also worked and helped on the farm. Leonard was a member of the First Christian Church, former member of the ELKS, and the V. F. W. Post # 1175. He enjoyed fishing, hunting especially deer, bird, and pheasant hunting. In his younger years enjoyed fast muscle cars. Leonard was married to Barbara Zabel on Sept. 12, 1981. She survives of the home. She had worked in payroll for Global Union and Glaze Construction.&nbsp; She retired from Johnson Controls.&nbsp; Betty was a member of WIC - Women in Construction.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leo Oxford, son Richard D. Oxford, sister Maxine Roberts, two brothers Lowell and Ralph Scoffield.

Survivors include daughter Joyce Oxford of Lee's Summit, son Greg Oxford of Stockton, MO, three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

artistic soul and enjoyed creating her own rap songs and painting bright
 vibrant art. She had a large imagination and was too smart for her own 
good. She was always very protective of her sisters and enjoyed cooking
 large meals to draw them closer together. 
She is survived by her Daughter-Cataleya; Sisters-Tania, Amanda, &amp; 
Fabiola; Grandmother-Sofia Reyes; Aunts and Uncles-Alfonso Reyes,

She enjoyed fishing, traveling and playing bingo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond; sister, Pat; and sons, AJ Amos, Dallas Amos, and Chris Herwig.

Survivors include her son, Billy Joe Amos (Tammy), sister, Alice Plummer (Kenny); daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Amos; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Sheri Lynne Powers Cogan, age 67, of Weston, MO passed away peacefully on February 21st, 2023. Sheri was born June 4th, 1955 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Roy and Helen Powers. Sheri grew up in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1973. She was a Courier and then International Document Agent for Fedex, the position she held when she retired in 2016. She will be remembered for her incredible voice, wit, caring nature, love of music and the passion she had for helping others. She made a lasting impression on anyone she met and was always the life of the party. She cared deeply for her family and considered all the friends she met along the way her family too. She had quite a green thumb and found pure at Christmas. Within our family, she celebrated her family. She was a season ticket holder to the Chiefs with Mark and loved the Royals, a love she inherited from her parents. She enjoyed traveling to Colorado to the Family Cabin as well as Oklahoma to family reunions. One of Mark and Sheri’s greatest joys together was traveling to Ireland with their family and friends. She will be leaving behind daughter Nettie Powers and grandson Elim, Stevie (Jeff) Shatto and grandsons Lucas and Jack, Ryan &amp; grandchildren, Kane, Rya and Raven; daughter Erin and granddaughter, Madison (Trey) Miller. She is survived by two brothers Roy Powers and Bruce Powers and sister Gloria Edwards. Sheri was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years D. Mark Cogan, her parents Roy and Helen Powers, sisters Tanya Powers, Sonja Powers and brother Larry Powers. Though we have lost one, God has a good friend at his side in Sheri Cogan. The memories will last forever.

A visitation will be held at 10a-11a, Saturday February 25, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Platte City; followed by a 11a funeral service. Interment will follow at Mount Bethel Cemetery, Weston, Missouri.

Leona worked as a beautician for over 30 years in the Kansas City and Platte City areas. She had also been a waitress for the former Golden Buffet in Kansas City. Leona was a member of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church, Atchison, where she served at Treasurer for the church, as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher. She was a member of the Seniors of Faith and the Effingham Extension Unit. She enjoyed sewing, was an artist with painting and lettering. She loved to cook, bake pies and flower gardening. She was married to Donald A. Steuart on July 10, 1965, in Effingham, KS. He survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son Alan E. (Laurie) Steuart, Bonner Springs, KS, and a daughter Angela (Matt) Stivers, Kansas City, MO, a sister Diana (Jerry) Gearhart, Effingham, KS, a grandson Brett Steuart, and a great grandson Asher Steuart.

George H. Hill, a worker for the Leavenworth Grain Elevator, Walcott Elevator, Missouri Pacific Railroad and retired from the Union Pacific Railroad passed away Monday, February 20, 2023 at the NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City Hospital. George had been battling several illnesses over the years. He was 88.

George was born May 27, 1934, in Leavenworth, KS the son of Howard and Ruth (Elwood) Hill.&nbsp;

George is proceeded in death by various relatives and family members.

George and his only sibling Gertrude were raised by Ruth (Elwood) Hill Kune. Lacking a high school diploma, he was able to do anything with his hands. George was a member of the Fortress of Faith Christian Fellowship and a helper/supporter of God’s Open Closet. He was a strong believer in God, faith, love of family and hard work.&nbsp;

He married Ida (Shawanibin) Flint Sprenkle Hill on May 12, 2001 in Kansas 5 months before her passing.

He married Margaret R. Hill on June 14, 1952, in Atchison and were married 42 years before her passing.

Together they raised 5 daughters and 1 son; Robin Ivison, Wathena KS, Kathy (Paul) Gallagher, McLouth KS, Mary Ann Sanders, Port Orange FL, Diana (Tony) Sheppard, Brunswick GA, George (Timothy) Hill who also proceeded him in death.&nbsp; Peggy (Larry) Miller, Independence MO.

Other survivors include: 12 Grandchildren; 24 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great-great Grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, KS.&nbsp; On Monday, February 27, 2023. Funeral Service will follow at noon. Service will be conducted by Senior Pastor Howard Jones. Burial will be at Mount Muncie Cemetery.

He was 88.George was born May 27, 1934, in Leavenworth, KS the son of Howard and Ruth (Elwood) Hill.&nbsp;George is proceeded in death by various relatives and family members.George and his only sibling Gertrude were raised by Ruth (Elwood) Hill Kune. Lacking a high school diploma, he was able to do anything with his hands. George was a member of the Fortress of Faith Christian Fellowship and a helper/supporter of God’s Open Closet. He was a strong believer in God, faith, love of family and hard work.&nbsp;He married Ida (Shawanibin) Flint Sprenkle Hill on May 12, 2001 in Kansas 5 months before her passing.He married Margaret R. Hill on June 14, 1952, in Atchison and were married 42 years before her passing.Together they raised 5 daughters and 1 son; Robin Ivison, Wathena KS, Kathy (Paul) Gallagher, McLouth KS, Mary Ann Sanders, Port Orange FL, Diana (Tony) Sheppard, Brunswick GA, George (Timothy) Hill who also proceeded him in death.&nbsp; Peggy (Larry) Miller, Independence MO.Other survivors include: 12 Grandchildren; 24 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great-great Grandchildren.Visitation will be from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Davis Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, KS.&nbsp; On Monday, February 27, 2023. Keith Alvin Schrader passed peacefully on February 17, 2023. He was born, November 9, 1949, at Sabetha, KS, one of 9 children born to Walter Henry and Elizabeth Phyllis Chaffee Schrader. He lived his early years on the family farm northeast of Hiawatha, attending a one-room country grade school near his rural home. His family moved to Hiawatha in 1961 and he graduated from Hiawatha High School in May 1967. He briefly attended Highland Community College in Highland, KS. In April 1970 he enlisted in the Navy and was honorably discharged in February 1973. In 1979 he became a delivery agent for the Kansas City Star newspaper. In 1985 he moved to the Wichita area and took on various jobs including pizza delivery, servicing USA Today news racks, and delivered the Wichita Business Journal. He delivered The Wichita Eagle from 1988 to 1999 and a weekly Air Force Base newspaper from 1989 to 2011. Keith retired in 2011.

He enjoyed researching his family genealogy since 1998. He also did research on many Brown County, KS deceased, putting their information on FindAGrave.com. He enjoyed watching the birds and wildlife in his yard. Mr. Schrader married Gailene Butrick Dec 22, 1973 in Hiawatha, KS. They divorced in August 1974. He married Mrs. Debra Twombly Dec 21, 1974. They divorced in Jan 1983. Keith never remarried. Survivors include his daughter, Christine (Katie) Schrader of Berryton, KS; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret (Scott) Shannon, of Kansas City, MO, Mrs. Louise E. Sager of Geneva, IL and Mrs. Mary (Dean) Furnish of Indio, Calif.; one brother, Charles (Mary Beth) Schrader of Kansas City, KS; and two adopted daughters, Tara (Kevin) Gurney-Frank &amp; Trina Shughart. Phyllis Jean Sparks passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 
17, 2023. She was born in Chanute, Kansas, to Iona Fern (McKenzie) and 
Ralph Samuels and grew up in Chanute where she attended grade and high 
school. She was the majorette and president of the Chanute High School 
Drum Corps and worked at a drug store soda fountain. Phyllis began her 
secretarial career working at the Chanute Airport and continued 
secretarial work throughout her life, including work with RJ Reynolds, 
temporary secretarial agencies, Pembroke Hill and Roeland Park Community
 Center. 

She married William J. Sparks shortly after high school. Their 
wedding day was the same day Bill got his draft notice for the Korean 
War. They moved to California while he served in the Korean War. After 
the war, they moved to Manhattan, Kansas, where Bill attended KSU and 
Phyllis became a secretary to several professors in the Agronomy 
Department. She became pregnant with their first child and her focus 
shifted to raising a family. They moved frequently and Phyllis made 
homes for their four children in Rocky Ford, Colorado, Hays, Kansas, 
Emporia, Kansas, St. Joseph, Missouri, Mission, Kansas, &amp; Fairway, 
Kansas. After divorcing in 1989, Phyllis continued living in Prairie 
Village Kansas, making life-long friends on the tennis court and at the 
bridge table. She will be remembered for her kind, gentle spirit while 
always paying attention to the small details.

Phyllis was blessed with four children who survive her:&nbsp; Kathryn 
Knopke (Don), Susan Burke (Terry), William Sparks, Jr. (Vicki), Samuel 
Sparks (Chris); 9 grandchildren: Jacob &amp; Michael Knopke (Christina),
 Kayla Burke Wohletz (Adam), Jordan &amp; Dylan Burke, Ashton Sparks, 
Courtney Sparks, Austin &amp; Sophia Sparks; and 6 great grandchildren 
who affectionately called her Granny P. Phyllis also leaves a sister, 
Betty Archer.

She was a dedicated Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Burial will be in Chanute, Kansas, at a later date.

Stephen Lee Moser passed away at age 71 at Maysville, Missouri on Monday, February 20, 2023.

He was the son of Frank E. Moser, Jr. and Dorothea (McCue) Moser, born December 3, 1951. His brothers were Mark Richard Moser and James Kent Moser.

Stephen was the grandson of Charles B. McCue and Ethel (Woodward) McCue, and Frank E. Moser, Sr. and Bettie (Kountz) Moser.

He is survived by two aunts, an uncle, and several cousins.

Stephen graduated from Savannah High School and received a B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Missouri in 1973. He was an Eagle Scout, holding his God and Country award, and spent 11 years in 4-H club work, attending National 4-H camp in Washington, D.C.

Gene Teeter, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, February 20, 2023.

She was born on April 6, 1936, to Calvin and Myrtle (Smith) VanLoon in Knoxville, Iowa.

She graduated from Knoxville High School and went on to obtain her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education and Speech and Social Sciences from Iowa State University. Later she earned her master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from Northwest Missouri State University. While in college, after competing in the Miss Iowa pageant, she was set up on a blind date on Valentine’s Day with John Teeter. On June 16, 1957, they were married. They shared 65 years of adventures together.

In 1970 they moved to St. Joseph and joined the Ashland United Methodist Church. Gene and John traveled to all fifty states, China, and Eastern and Western Europe. They lived in Florida for ten years, where she was a dedicated member of the Cypress Lake Methodist Church in Fort Myers. After moving back to Missouri, she became reinvolved in the Ashland United Methodist Church and was a very active member of their different organizations. Gene was also a proud member of the P.E.O. International, a philanthropic educational organization, she was a Golden Girl (fifty-year member), and a past president of her local chapter.

Gene was a very accomplished woman. She taught in three different states over twenty-eight years, including Iowa (one year), Illinois (five years) and Missouri (twenty-two years). She taught Home Economics, English, Social Sciences and P.E. For over twenty years, Gene worked as a guidance counselor for the Savannah School District. She was honored as Northwest Missouri Secondary School Counselor of the Year and Missouri State Secondary School Counselor of the Year. Gene was a member of the Savannah School Board, former PTA president, and member of the Missouri State PTA Board, along with several other educational committees and associations.

Gene loved to golf, play Mahjong and bridge, and read her favorite books.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, John of St. Joseph, MO; daughter, Stephany Newport (Kent) of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Emily Wixted (Sean) of Geneva, IL, and Jackson Newport of Overland Park, KS; great-grandson, Jonah Wixted; sister-in-law, Donna Arand of Algona, IA; and extended family.

Melvin R. Glenn, Sr., 91, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2023.

Melvin was born in Gilliam, Missouri to Fred and Martha Glenn. He was the third of four children. His family moved to Marshall, Missouri when Melvin was 6 years old, and then to Saint Joseph when he was 9.

Mel was a veteran of the Korean War. He served in active duty near the border between North and South Korea with the U.S. Army 839th SCARWAF Engineers. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1668, and a Life Member of the DAV Chapter 21, and a Life Member of the American Legion Post 0359.

Mel married Norma Jean Karn on November 10, 1950 in Fanning, Kansas. They had two sons: Melvin Ray, Jr. and Michael Dale. Mel and Norma celebrated their 71st Wedding Anniversary on November 10, 2021. Mel was a family man at heart and it always showed. He was a loving and devoted husband and dad and a wonderful 24/7 caregiver to his wife for three years until the moment of her death on December 17, 2021.

Mel was a lifelong member and very active in the Community of Christ Church. He often pitched in and built a wide variety of things for the church. He especially loved to make things for the little kids to enjoy.

At age 62, Mel retired from AGP after 31 years. In addition to being a longtime employee, Mel also served for decades as Union Steward for the Teamsters and a Safety Man for the Union Employees. He had a sense of integrity and fairness that earned him the respect of his fellow employees and also the members of management that he interacted with.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, as well as two brothers, John and Calvin; his wife, Norma; and his son, Michael.

He is survived by his sister, Dorothy; his son, Mel Jr. (Peggy); and Terri Thaler (Steve); seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends – including one very special friend of the family, Gina Signoracci.

He was loved dearly and will be sorely missed by many. May the Good Lord rest his soul.

He was born September 1, 1957 to Al and Lou McIntosh in St. Joseph, Missouri.

He graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School, class of 1976.

Steve worked security at Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center, Family Guidance Center, and a bus driver for Mid Buchanan.

He was in the U.S. Army and was vice president of the Paralyzed Veteran’s Association. He was also the past president of the girls’ softball league.

Steve was an avid Chief’s fan and was a long-time season ticket holder.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lou McIntosh.

Survivors include his father, Al McIntosh; daughter, Kalanie Hoffman (Justin), sister, Cindy Littlejohn (Mike); brother, Tom McIntosh; nieces, Kelli Littlejohn and Ashley McIntosh; nephew, Brandon McIntosh (Samantha); former wife, Cindy Gross; life-long friend, Pat Hummer; and his four-legged best friend, Zeus.

Steve McIntosh 1957 - 2023

Sara Ruth (Sally) Ohlhausen Slaughter, died February 17, 2023, in O’Fallon, IL, after a fall in her assisted-living facility apartment. She devoted her life to her God and her four children: Rudie III, Sabrina, Meril and Aaron and their families.

Born in Weston, March 9, 1930, to Martin Monroe Ohlhausen, co-owner of the Weston Milling Company, and Ruth Marie Schaback Ohlhausen, and raised by them in keeping with their faiths (Church of Christ and Methodist Church) and their Masonic and Eastern Star principles, she was no mere “miller’s daughter.”

After graduating as valedictorian from Weston High School (1948), she earned an Associate of the Arts degree from Christian College (1950). She then transferred to the University of Missouri for a Bachelor’s Degree in home economics (1952) where she made life-long friends with her “sisters” in the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. After graduation, she worked as a tea room manager at Macy’s Department Store in Kansas City before marrying Rudie Wright Slaughter jr., Oct. 10, 1953, in Weston. With him, she uprooted and moved her growing family seven times in 13 years before settling down after an eighth move in her large, mid-century modern home in Columbia, MO, which became an empty nest as her children graduated high school and college and moved away. Before they “fledged,” she transferred her home economist skills to them through patient practice and correction. Sara Ruth, named for her mother and grandmother Sarah Rebecca Rinehart Ohlhausen and great-great-grandmother Sarah Smither Layton was an avid family historian, long before ancestry.com became popular. Proud of her mixed Swiss-German heritage tracing back to the 1400s and Anglo-American Colonial roots that include seven Revolutionary War patriots, she toured ancestral hometowns of Laytonsville and Walkersville in Maryland, visiting distant cousins. Survivors include her brother William Rinehart Ohlhausen of Platte Woods, brother-in-law Robert Wyckoff Smith of Weston, children Rudie Wright Slaughter III and wife Nila of Fredericksburg, TX, Sabrina Marie Sellmeyer and husband Jeffrey of McAlester, OK, Meril Monroe Slaughter and his wife Susan Dewey of Union, IL, and Aaron Tory Slaughter and his wife Andrea of O’Fallon, IL, nine grandchildren: Aimee Chantel Esther Slaughter, Tyler Allen Sellmeyer and his wife Rachael, Brandon Alexander Slaughter, Andrea Marie Sellmeyer Lynch and her husband Benjamin, Akiko Rae Slaughter Spencer and her husband David, Ryan Nicholas Slaughter, Capt. Jacob Christopher Slaughter, 2nd Lt. Michael David Slaughter, and Katherine Victoria Slaughter Derby and her husband Riley, five great-grandchildren: Jackson and Ella Sellmeyer, Anna and David Lynch, and Olive Spencer and numerous nieces and nephews spanning three generations.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Jean Ohlhausen Smith and sister-in-law Willa Jean West Ohlhausen. There will be a visitation starting at 1 pm at the Vaughn Funeral Home, 18905 State Route 45 North, Weston, followed by a memorial service at 2 pm, Rev. Kara Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Weston.
