Dorothy Ellen Barnes, 92, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024 in Hiawatha, Kansas.

She was born to George and Bertha Wakehouse in Council Bluffs, Iowa on October 20, 1931. She married Chuck Turpin and they lived in Iowa until his passing. She met Doyce “Bud” Barnes in California and there were married and they lived in California until 1972 when they moved to Arkansas and lived there until his death.

Dorothy is survived by Kathy Turpin of Fullerton, California; Sharon (Jim) Farris of Hiawatha, Kansas and her grandchildren Britney (Devin) White and CJ Farris; great grandchildren Lily, Jameson &amp; Lucas White; step-children, David Barnes, Dorce Barnes and Debbye Barreda; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two sisters and a brother.

There will be a memorial service at Calvary Temple Saturday September 14 at 1:00 PM

She will be laid to rest at Galatia Cemetery in Norfork, Arkansas at a graveside service at 11:00 AM on September 21.

Lloyd D. Wilson, 89, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in a local hospital.

He was born July 30, 1935 in Turney, Missouri. He was the son of Mildred Evelyn (Dewey) and John Wesley Wilson.

He retired from the Missouri Department of Transportation in 1993 after 40 years of service.

Lloyd was married to Donna Lynn Pemberton from 1953 to 1980. In 1980 he married Marlene J. Blodgett.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Lou Smith; infant grandson, David Million; and his wife, Marlene.

He enjoyed dancing, horses, taking care of his lawn and in later years watching sports on TV and westerns.

Lloyd was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Eagles Lodge #49.

Lloyd is survived by two daughters, Pamela Million (Mike), and Susan Voss (Hank); three stepdaughters, Dana Matt (Pete), Donna Bruns (Jeff), and Darcy Adams (Steve). “He loved all of his girls.”

Additional survivors include his brother Earl Bratcher; sister, Sherri Siders; grandchildren, John Voss (Jayme), Adrian Johnson (Thaylan), Michael Million, Brad Million (Misty), Blair Costello (Tyler), Joshua Glidewell, Janelle Glidewell, Bethany Barton, Megan Barton, and Amanda Adams; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Sally Payne.

Evelyn Furst, 96, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Cosby, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

She was born October 7, 1927 in Rosendale, Missouri to Harry B. and Mabel N. (Adkins) Rhoades.

After a year of study at Northwest Missouri State University she received her teaching certificate. She taught at Rosendale public school for a year.

Evelyn married Earl W. Furst on May 22, 1948. He preceded her in death on April 20, 2020.

Evelyn was an active participant in 4-H and the community. She was involved in numerous churches and their activities. She enjoyed square dancing and shared her love of antique cars with the Moila Old Tymer’s. Evelyn also enjoyed going on trips with Earl on their private plane.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Earl; her parents; daughter, Cindy Lou Furst; daughter-in-law, Marian Furst; great-grandson, Daniel; sisters, Louanne Furst and Edwina Gomel.

Survivors include her children, Ray Furst (Janet) and Kenneth Furst; grandchildren, Scott, Jasen, Spencer, Melissa, Chris, Amanda, Sarah, and Zachary; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Jack Kenyon, 77, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away on September 8, 2024. He was born on May 7, 1947 to Jack Sr. Kenyon and Edna LaVerne Kenyon (Hall) in Flint, Michigan.

Jack graduated from Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1965. He enlisted and served in the Vietnam War. After his service was over, he attended Northeast Missouri State College, currently Truman State University, in Kirksville, MO where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration.

While attending college, he met the love of his life, Rosalind Tester, and they married in 1971. The Kenyon’s put roots down in Gower, MO, where they raised their two children and where you would often see Jack driving around in a convertible or a motorcycle or hauling his boat out to Smithville Lake. Eventually they moved to St. Joseph where they both lived for the rest of their lives.

Jack worked at Carnation, now Nestlé Purina, for 29 years before retiring in 2003.

Jack enjoyed spending time with his family most of all. His activities were riding his motorcycle, archery and golfing..

Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Rosalind Kenyon, and his parents Jack Kenyon Sr and Edna LaVerne Kenyon, his beloved Uncle Clint Hall (Genevieve), Aunt Oleta (Bill), and his grandparents Jessie and Lorene Hall and Jack and Lola Kenyon.

Jack is survived by his daughter Mia Michelle Kenyon, his son Daniel Kenyon, his son-in-law Joe Frank, his daughter-in-law Teresa Kenyon, his 4 grandchildren: Alexei Hockenberg, Jack Kenyon, Oliver Wright-Frank, Henry Frank; and his sister Linda (Larry) Hicks. Jack Kenyon 1947 - 2024

Jane Marie Dewar Schuele, born on September 24, 1944, in Kansas City, KS, passed away on September 10, 2024, after an 18-year courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved daughter of Donald and Mary Dewar.

Jane attended Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, KS, and graduated in 1962. After high school, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of St. Mary, Leavenworth, KS, in 1966. Following graduation, she began her teaching career in Kansas City, KS.

On February 12, 1972, Jane married Karl Schuele at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Kansas City, KS. For the duration of their marriage, the couple resided on their family farm in Atchison, KS.

Jane worked at Benedictine College for 32 years, contributing to various roles, including the Maintenance Department and the Executive MBA program. However, she was best known for her work as a Library Assistant for Interlibrary Loans at the Benedictine College Library, earning the nickname “Library Jane,” before retiring in 2022. In addition, Jane spent several years working with the Benedictine Sisters in their kitchen.

As a devoted St. Benedict Parish member, Jane supported the adoration chapel for 22 years. She loved reading, cheering on the Benedictine College basketball and football teams, attending musical events at the college, and especially enjoyed performances by the Atchison Jazz Express. She discovered a new role in the Atchison Community later in life as she combined her passion for loving children, holiday spirit, and the color red by playing the role of Mrs. Claus with her real-life partner and husband, Karl, who played Santa Claus. Santa and Mrs. Claus celebrated Christmas in the Atchison community for 18 years, earning her a place on the “nice list” for life.

Jane always proclaimed herself to be practical, down to earth, and a champion of the underdog. Her life is a testament to the type of person she truly is, especially through compassion; Jane never hesitated to help out someone in need, whether they needed shelter, help with running errands, or even providing care for a relative or friend in poor health or dying. She loves her family dearly and always attended events for her kids, grandkids, and nieces/nephews at school. Many knew Jane to share her affection for ladybugs, sunsets, and sunflowers. At Benedictine basketball and football games, she was a fierce fan and celebrated the raven spirit, along with her favorite marching band. She is also known as “Country Jane” at the local KAIR Radio station and was an enthusiastic and loyal listener. Jane cherished her friendships and relationships, which played a significant role in her life, bringing joy and connection wherever she went.

Jane is survived by her husband of 52 years, Karl Schuele of Atchison, KS; her four children: Jeff (Megan) Schuele of Atchison, KS, Dan (Carolyn Salfrank) Schuele of Atchison, KS, Jennifer Schuele of Overland Park, KS, and Denise Schuele of Overland Park, KS; her sister, Rita (Larry) Heintzelman of Olathe, KS; her brother-in-law, Tom (Pauline) Schuele of Atchison, KS; and her sister-in-law, Marilyn Geiger of Robinson, KS. She also leaves behind nine granddaughters- Kayla, Allison, Greta, Annika, Bridget, Kai, Alaney, Marika, and Liesel, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald, and Mary Dewar-Flynn; her stepfather, Richard Flynn; her granddaughter, Ashton Marie Schuele; and her grandson, Colin Keating Schuele.

Jane Marie Schuele 1944 - 2024

Deanna Kay Potts of Kansas City, MO, formerly of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2024. She was born January 15,1942 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Tura Virginia Bodde and James Lewis Mules. She graduated high school from the Convent of the Sacred Heart, attended St. Mary’s College, before marrying her high school sweetheart John Stephen Potts on May 20,1961.&nbsp;

Throughout grade school and high school, Deanna was very close to her Cathedral friends, most of whom stood with her at her wedding. Deanna’s house was known as a popular gathering place, with a basement designed for fun—jukebox of 45s, pool table, foosball, card table. Many of the friendships and romances begun in this rec room led to lifelong marriages—Deanna and John included.

Having lost her father when she was an infant, Deanna was raised primarily by her mother, maternal aunts, and maternal grandparents. &nbsp;Throughout her childhood and young adulthood, Deanna was very close to Grandpa Joe and Baba, spending many weekends and summers in their company. She spoke fondly of their care and attention. And though her mother worked full-time for a large family, raising 7 children mostly on her own (having outlived 3 husbands), Deanna’s relationship with her mother was steadfast and loving. Throughout Deanna’s adulthood they spoke daily by phone and dined together weekly.

Deanna was preceded in death by her loving parents Louis and Tura Mules; her brothers Louis Mules, Mike Huffer, David Huffer, Johnnie Huffer, and her sister Joy Homan; her beloved son J.L and daughter Sarah Lynn; and her cherished husband John. 

Survivors include Deanna’s son John S Potts III and wife Jennifer; daughters, Dana C Armstrong and husband Art, and Michelle A Potts; and youngest son, Mark J Potts and wife Kim; daughter-in-law Donna; and beloved brother Tom Huffer. She will be missed by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Deanna skillfully assisted in running the Weekend/Evening College at Park College as an Executive Administrative Assistant for a decade in the late 80s through the 90s. The director, Dell Bagley glowingly praised her organizational skills and communication abilities in a professional academic setting. The Park College students spoke lovingly of her compassion and unfailing support of their needs and college experiences. To this day, her daughter Michelle receives fond remembrances of Deanna from Park College students she meets in academic settings.

She also maintained a busy artistic and social life. She played bridge with neighborhood friends, participated in art activities (china painting, flower arranging, scrapbooking, stamping, oil painting), and maintained childhood relationships through her final days.

Deanna was a devoted mother and grandmother—her most treasured moments were times spent with any of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was known for making her home a loving space of magic and wonder for children—she always had a prominent playroom in the house. She curated a small children’s library, collected engaging toys for creative play, made musical play instruments available (piano, flutes, drums, ukelele), kept games on hand (cards, barrel of monkeys, checkers, chess, Scrabble, Monopoly, Life, Clue, Battleship, Jenga, Simon, jumping rope, hoola hoops), maintained 2-3 beautifully designed doll houses, managed boxes of play clothes (capes, jackets, and tons of hats—cowboy, fireman, beret, top hat, derby hat, and tiaras).

Her family and friends recognize that Deanna delighted in holidays—Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. She decorated her entire house, creating a space of joy. Walking into her home was always to step into a welcoming, loving, and gorgeously decorated space that invited you to sit and relax. Deanna went well beyond decorations for the holidays, though. She created experiences. When her grandchildren were toddlers, she planned a Nutcracker Party for them that became an annual event: Nutcrackers were placed throughout the house with lovely winter garlands, while the Nutcracker soundtrack played. Deanna would serve the grandchildren chicken soup with grilled cheese sandwiches. While the kids ate, she would read to them Chicken Soup with Rice by Maurice Sendak, with a rousing chorus—Happy once, happy twice…happy chicken soup with rice! The party always concluded with a craft activity that the kids took home with them.

Family was the cornerstone of Deanna’s life. &nbsp;

Her most important and enduring relationship, however, was with her husband John. Their love built a strong home and family, and their focus and commitment to one another never faltered. A marriage that spans 63 years is rare—their relationship inspired family and friends. They supported and loved one another through times of adversity, and they reveled in endless days spent in joyful and comfortable companionship with one another. They particularly enjoyed working together on the design and upkeep of their beautifully landscaped yards and gardens—a labor of love they shared together. Deanna designed gardens of lush blooms, bursting with colors and textures. And because John enjoyed any beckoning open road (the remnants of farm-life and 30+ years as a truck driver), Deanna joined him most afternoons for a drive about. They were also known to bring one another a fruit offering each evening—sliced apples, oranges or watermelon. They shared a devotion of the deepest love, evident in even the smallest gestures.

Deanna and John were faithful parishioners at Cathedral in St. Joseph and Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City. Together they contributed to their Catholic community and demonstrated the Christian tenets of love, faith, and compassion.

Deanna established a core of kindness and love in her familial line. The universe has lost one of its brightest stars, but her light will shine on for generations to come.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Cathedral of St. Joseph. A luncheon reception will follow at Cathedral. Deanna Kay Potts of Kansas City, MO, formerly of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2024. She was born January 15,1942 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Tura Virginia Bodde and James Lewis Mules. She graduated high school from the Convent of the Sacred Heart, attended St. Mary’s College, before marrying her high school sweetheart John Stephen Potts on May 20,1961.&nbsp;Throughout grade school and high school, Deanna was very close to her Cathedral friends, most of whom stood with her at her wedding. Deanna’s house was known as a popular gathering place, with a basement designed for fun—jukebox of 45s, pool table, foosball, card table. Many of the friendships and romances begun in this rec room led to lifelong marriages—Deanna and John included.Having lost her father when she was an infant, Deanna was raised primarily by her mother, maternal aunts, and maternal grandparents. &nbsp;Throughout her childhood and young adulthood, Deanna was very close to Grandpa Joe and Baba, spending many weekends and summers in their company. She spoke fondly of their care and attention. And though her mother worked full-time for a large family, raising 7 children mostly on her own (having outlived 3 husbands), Deanna’s relationship with her mother was steadfast and loving. Throughout Deanna’s adulthood they spoke daily by phone and dined together weekly.Deanna was preceded in death by her loving parents Louis and Tura Mules; her brothers Louis Mules, Mike Huffer, David Huffer, Johnnie Huffer, and her sister Joy Homan; her beloved son J.L and daughter Sarah Lynn; and her cherished husband John. Survivors include Deanna’s son John S Potts III and wife Jennifer; daughters, Dana C Armstrong and husband Art, and Michelle A Potts; and youngest son, Mark J Potts and wife Kim; daughter-in-law Donna; and beloved brother Tom Huffer. She will be missed by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.&nbsp;Deanna skillfully assisted in running the Weekend/Evening College at Park College as an Executive Administrative Assistant for a decade in the late 80s through the 90s. The director, Dell Bagley glowingly praised her organizational skills and communication abilities in a professional academic setting. The Park College students spoke lovingly of her compassion and unfailing support of their needs and college experiences. To this day, her daughter Michelle receives fond remembrances of Deanna from Park College students she meets in academic settings.She also maintained a busy artistic and social life. She played bridge with neighborhood friends, participated in art activities (china painting, flower arranging, scrapbooking, stamping, oil painting), and maintained childhood relationships through her final days.Deanna was a devoted mother and grandmother—her most treasured moments were times spent with any of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was known for making her home a loving space of magic and wonder for children—she always had a prominent playroom in the house. She curated a small children’s library, collected engaging toys for creative play, made musical play instruments available (piano, flutes, drums, ukelele), kept games on hand (cards, barrel of monkeys, checkers, chess, Scrabble, Monopoly, Life, Clue, Battleship, Jenga, Simon, jumping rope, hoola hoops), maintained 2-3 beautifully designed doll houses, managed boxes of play clothes (capes, jackets, and tons of hats—cowboy, fireman, beret, top hat, derby hat, and tiaras).Her family and friends recognize that Deanna delighted in holidays—Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. She decorated her entire house, creating a space of joy. Walking into her home was always to step into a welcoming, loving, and gorgeously decorated space that invited you to sit and relax. Deanna went well beyond decorations for the holidays, though. She created experiences. When her grandchildren were toddlers, she planned a Nutcracker Party for them that became an annual event: Nutcrackers were placed throughout the house with lovely winter garlands, while the Nutcracker soundtrack played. Deanna would serve the grandchildren chicken soup with grilled cheese sandwiches. While the kids ate, she would read to them Chicken Soup with Rice by Maurice Sendak, with a rousing chorus—Happy once, happy twice…happy chicken soup with rice! The party always concluded with a craft activity that the kids took home with them.Family was the cornerstone of Deanna’s life. &nbsp;Her most important and enduring relationship, however, was with her husband John. Their love built a strong home and family, and their focus and commitment to one another never faltered. A marriage that spans 63 years is rare—their relationship inspired family and friends. They supported and loved one another through times of adversity, and they reveled in endless days spent in joyful and comfortable companionship with one another. They particularly enjoyed working together on the design and upkeep of their beautifully landscaped yards and gardens—a labor of love they shared together. Deanna designed gardens of lush blooms, bursting with colors and textures. And because John enjoyed any beckoning open road (the remnants of farm-life and 30+ years as a truck driver), Deanna joined him most afternoons for a drive about. They were also known to bring one another a fruit offering each evening—sliced apples, oranges or watermelon. They shared a devotion of the deepest love, evident in even the smallest gestures.Deanna and John were faithful parishioners at Cathedral in St. Joseph and Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City. Together they contributed to their Catholic community and demonstrated the Christian tenets of love, faith, and compassion.Deanna established a core of kindness and love in her familial line. The universe has lost one of its brightest stars, but her light will shine on for generations to come.The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Cathedral of St. Joseph. A luncheon reception will follow at Cathedral. Bonnie I. Locklin 86, of St Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2024 at a local health care facility. She was born August 24, 1938 in St. Joseph, daughter of Erma and Franklin Hubbard. 

Bonnie married Marvin Locklin on August 28, 1962. She started working with Westab, and later became an In Home Caretaker, caring for many children over the years. Bonnie enjoyed spending time at the casino and playing Bingo. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to the Mountains in Colorado. 

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Locklin in 2004, her parents, siblings, Frank Hubbard, Bert Hubbard, and Hazel Heumader. 

Survivors include: children, Marvin "Scott" Locklin, III of Liberty, MO, Yolanda (Barry) Smith of St. Joseph, Samuel Locklin of Kansas City, MO, and Alishia Hudson of St. Joseph, sisters, Donna Brown of Holton, KS and Kathy Lance (Ken) of Savannah, MO, 7 grandchildren, &nbsp;and many great-grandchildren.

Larry Miljavac, 72, &nbsp;of St. Joseph, Missouri passed from his earthly home to be joined with the Lord.

Larry was born on May 4, 1952 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to the late John J. and Hazel (Plekan) Miljavac. He was a 1970 graduate of Christian Brothers High School.

Larry spent his career as an electrician alongside family at Miljavac Electric.

Even after retirement Larry liked to stay busy, helping his family with any project,&nbsp;working on his land, and putting together a fun haunted house in his basement each&nbsp;year for the grandkids.

Larry made his life's goal spending quality time with family. Whether it was attending his kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events, inviting everyone over for BBQ and pool time, or&nbsp;taking everyone to Branson, he was always excited to get everyone together. He made all occasions fun, loved tirelessly, and will be missed dearly.

Larry is survived by his son, Adam Miljavac (Amy); two daughters, Remi Gramlich (Brian) and Kenzie Beach (Noah); ten grandchildren, Sydney, Makayla and Makenna Miljavac; Scarlett, Reese, Thomas and Luke Gramlich; Lucy, Olive and Hank Beach; six siblings, John (Debby), Mary Anne, Joe (Sue), Jim (LaDonna), Mike (Brenda) and Nancy (Kent) Teschner.

Mr. Miljavac has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp;&nbsp;Sidenfaden Chapel. Dennis Ray Minschke, 70, Savannah, Missouri; passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Dennis was born on January 18, 1954 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He was a 1972 graduate of Savannah High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Missouri Western State College.

Mr. Minschke retired as a claim’s adjustor from Shelter Insurance after many years of dedicated service. He had previously, worked as a science teacher for the Fillmore and Savannah School Districts. In his later years, he enjoyed working as a driver for Enterprise Rent-A-Car after his retirement.

Dennis enjoyed chess, golf outings, playing cards and casino trips with his wife. He was league commissioner of his fantasy football league and enjoyed coaching his children as well as the Fillmore girls basketball team. Dennis’s most prized role was being a family man; he was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather.

Dennis married Willa Gatton on January 30, 1982, and celebrated forty-two years of marriage. She survives him of the home.

Additional survivors include his daughter, Iva Wright (Tim); son, Billy Minschke; grandchildren, Patrick, Jazzlyn, Samuel and Jayde.

Dennis was preceded in death by two grandson, Hayden and Conner Wion and daughter-in-law, Aleigha Minschke.

Mr. Minschke has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 to 3:00 PM Saturday, September 14, at the family home for close friends and family.

John Carter Miller, 64, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away September 8, 2024. He was born on February 22, 1960, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Phillip E. and Patricia J. (Mattox) Miller.

He married Tina M. Deever on October 15, 2019. He is survived by his children, Dustin Miller, Misty Spencer, John J. Miller (Andrea), Christina Vega (Robert), Tobias Deever (Vikki), and Andrea Miller (David); grandchildren, Kayton, Cameron, Ali, Johnathan, Maddison, Jameson, Rayden, Lilly, Tateum, Kane, Kace, Tobias Jr., Ellie, Adaline, Brett, Zachary, and Bryan; great-grandchild, Hope; sisters, Shirley Sexton and Debbie Bunkowski (Ed); numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

John poured his heart into his life's work, leading All American Remodeling for over five decades. His dedication to craftsmanship and service was as much a part of his identity as his boundless passion for the great outdoors. An esteemed Scoutmaster, John instilled values and skills in countless young lives. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and was known for his love of the Fourth of July, often orchestrating grand displays that brought laughter and spectacle to his friends and family.

Scott Labrozzi, Sr., 55, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2024.

He was born November 24, 1968 in Oswego, New York to Albert and Cynthia (Payne) Labrozzi.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in history.

Scott married Stacy Atkinson on June 15, 2022. She survives of the home.

Scott enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being a family man.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mahayla; and grandson, Zayd.

Kevin James Vargas, 22, Leavenworth, passed away September 3, 2024.Kevin had such a love of animals, nature, and collecting, well, anything. 

Including animals. Turtles, rabbits, birds,&nbsp;squirrels, lizards, and snakes were some of his finds. He didn't get to keep them all, to his dismay.&nbsp;He was very smart and very goofy which made him so entertaining. He will truly be missed by all his family and&nbsp;friends. We love you, Kevin.

Kevin J. Vargas 2002 - 2024

Shirley Diana (Smith) Hughes, 85, of Rock Port, Missouri passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa.

She was born October 7, 1938 in Atchison County, one of five girls of Charles Walter A. and Goldie Mae (Beam) Smith.

On December 21, 1957 she married Edward Lee Hughes, and they became parents of three sons and a daughter. Shirley was a lifelong farmer, and raised cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, geese, chickens, ducks, and even peacocks. She served as secretary of the Atchison County Co-Op.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; sons, Edward Lee "Scooter" Hughes II, David Allan Hughes, and Steven Charles Hughes; sister, Betty Chamberlain; brothers-in-law, Greg Chamberlain, Bill Harrington, Jack Scamman and Russell Hughes; and sister-in-law, Elaine Hughes.

Shirley Diana (Smith) Hughes, 85, of Rock Port, Missouri passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa.She was born October 7, 1938 in Atchison County, one of five girls of Charles Walter A. and Goldie Mae (Beam) Smith.On December 21, 1957 she married Edward Lee Hughes, and they became parents of three sons and a daughter. Shirley was a lifelong farmer, and raised cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, geese, chickens, ducks, and even peacocks. Jacquinn Michelle “Shelly” Otto, 31, of Gower, MO passed away September 7, 2024.

She was born on January 7, 1993, to Joseph Thomas and April Dawn (Cockriel) Otto in Smithville, MO. Shelly grew up in Gower and graduated from East Buchanan High School in 2011.

On July 29, 2022, she was united in marriage to Austin Berry. Shelly enjoyed crafting, growing plants, loved animals and most of all she loved being a mom to Renly.

Michael L. Thomas, age 78, of Sunrise Beach, formerly of Camden Point, departed this life on September 7, 2024. He was a loving family man and did not know a stranger.

He was a very proud Naval Air veteran who always said it was his honor to serve. He was a fifty-year Mason and a Past Master of Camden Point Lodge #120. He was also an avid motorcycle enthusiast who just loved life.

His challenges with vision did not impact his love of life, only allowing him a deeper vision.

He leaves behind a wife, Suzanne of fifty-six years; son Scott and wife Mary; daughter Shelly; brother Larry; extended family and so many special friends.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 21st, at 11:00 a.m., at the West Wing Meeting Room, 125 Oddo Dr., Sunrise Beach, MO 65079. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Hospice Compassus or your favorite charity would be appreciated.

William Joseph Dorsey, Sr., age 85, of Atchison, KS, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on September 5, 2024.&nbsp;

Bill’s life will be celebrated on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. A visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery. Funeral Care has been entrusted to the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Bill was born on June 13, 1939, in Atchison, KS, the son of John Andrew Dorsey, Sr. and Isabelle Lorene (Marshall) Dorsey. He attended Atchison High School and graduated from Dekalb High School in 1958.&nbsp;

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1959 until 1963 as a boilerman on the USS Bradford and USS Coontz. He was recalled into active duty on his wedding day, to the Vietnam War and served in South Carolina on the USS Bordelon before being honorably discharged in June of 1965. During his tenure, he travelled to Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, The Philippines and the Vietnam River.&nbsp;

He did in fact go through with the wedding, he married Betty A. Truman, on September 19, 1964, and his passing is just two weeks short of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Bill and Betty have two sons, Scott Dorsey and Bill Dorsey, Jr. &nbsp;Additional survivors include his siblings, Dotty Dorsey Burnett, John Andrew Dorsey, II, and Gene Hazlett; and countless nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Charles Hazlett, James Dorsey, Mary Dorsey Sowers, and Ronald Dorsey.&nbsp;

Bill and Betty took their family on numerous vacations to American National Parks, including Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, Yosemite, Sequoia National Forest, Mount Rushmore, Grand Canyon, Estes Park, Pikes Peak, The Badlands, Blue Ridge Mountains and Waterton National Park in Canada. He thoroughly enjoyed hiking in the mountains with his family and seeing and photographing the countless animals and scenery. Bill and Betty also had the privilege of traveling to Chicago numerous times with their son, Scott, during his work trips. Bill took over as the scoutmaster for troop 93 when his sons were participating, and took the scouts to Camp Geiger and was an honorary warrior of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say in St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp;

Bill worked for Rockwell Foundry in Atchison, and Missouri Pacific Railroad in Falls City, NE, before joining Midwest Grain Products, for twenty-seven years until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed people, so he spent a few years as a greeter at Wal-Mart in retirement.&nbsp;

He had incredible strength and character and would never give up on anything his whole life. Although he may have grown up very poor, that led to him being humble of heart and gentle of spirit. He enjoyed working outside in his gardens and trees, reading his bible, working on crossword puzzles, watching the sunrise and his old western movies, especially the Virginian. He sang in the choir at the First Christian church for many years and got a kick out of playing practical jokes on people, especially on April Fool’s Day.&nbsp;

Julia Ann Clem, 86, of Atchison, Kansas passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024, after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 am, Monday, September 16, 2024, at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison, with Father Meinrad Miller, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The parish rosary will be recited on Sunday, September 15 at 4:30 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, with visitation to follow until 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mount Saint Scholastica, St. Benedict’s school, or the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.

Julia was born on Halloween, October 31, 1937, in Atchison, Kansas to Albert and Helen (Clark) Handke. She attended rural grade school and St. Benedict’s Grade School and graduated from the Mount Saint Scholastica Academy in 1954. She received a B.A. in Mathematics from Mount Saint Scholastica College in 1968 and an M.S. in Technical Teacher Education from Pittsburg State University in 1985.

She married Raymond Albert Clem on June 15, 1957, at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison. They were married 61 years until his death in 2019. She was a life-long Catholic and became a Benedictine Oblate of Mount St Scholastica Monastery in 2015.

As a wife and mother, she was always ready to lead the family activities, traveling to Michael’s running events, shuttling Mary Lynn to 4-H activities and joining Raymond on trips from coast to coast. Later in life, she showed her family and friends how to be a loving caregiver to Raymond. Julia’s contributions to her community were numerous and varied, with a focus on education and community support. She loved mathematics and taught vocational students at Northeast KS Vocational School for many years. She shared her talents by serving on the Community Corrections Advisory Board, 1st Judicial District Nominating Commission, Atchison Historical Society, and numerous volunteer roles.

Survivors include her sister Kathleen (George) Tyson, Scottsdale, AZ; her daughter, Mary Lynn (Ross) Ray, Winchester, KS; her son, Michael (Deborah) Clem, Los Gatos, CA; two grandchildren, Andrew (Lauren) Clem and Matthew Clem; two step-grandchildren, Carl Ray and Jodi Davis; her great-granddaughter Colbie Julia Clem; five step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

It is reported that the heavenly reunion of loved ones was quite the affair. Husband Raymond, parents Helen and Albert, brother Owen Handke, children Cathy and Andy were all lovingly gathered for the homecoming celebration. Her cousin, Father Benedict Olsen, gave a blessing and then told a shaggy dog story to start the heavenly party.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Arthur Bittick Jr, twin sister, Donna Butner, sister Ruby Catheral, and daughter, Lori Lynn Helsel-Dolman. 

He is survived by his son, James W.D. Bittick of Plattsburg, MO., beloved companion, Martha Deaton of the home, step children: Ernie, Tom and John Kretzer, and Becky Nelson, loving grandchildren: Carlie Campbell, Jennie Nichols, grandson, Hunter Kretzer, sisters, Diana Ferris, and Nita Kunzler both of St. Joseph, MO.

She graduated from Morey High School, Norfolk, VA. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, and daughter, Tammie Turner.

William Joel Wright, 87, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2024. Hewas born in a farm home about 1 mile N/E of Perrin, Missouri to Joel Clyde (“Mick”) and GenevaReva (Golden) Wright. 

It was the Great Depression and life was hard on the farm. His parents told the story that he was the “only” thing they produced that year on the farm. Those who knew and loved him, or who worked with him through the years, counted Bill as a role model and great presence in their lives.

Bill attended a one-room schoolhouse, the Martin School, in rural Clinton County and then high school in Plattsburg, Missouri, graduating in 1955. He attended U.S. Trades School in Kansas City, training for auto mechanic, graduating in May 1956 and working for various auto dealerships/parts supply stores. He found his calling, though, when he joined the Missouri Air National Guard on Feb. 14, 1958, of which he was a member for the next 39 years.

Following his Basic Military Training for the Reserves, he was a self-employed farmer from 1958to 1962, when he was offered full-time employment and began his Missouri Air National Guard Military Technician Training. At that time, his military assignment was for Flight Engineer (1962-69), for which he also trained.

In the Military Technician area, Bill began as a Flight Line Mechanic, then worked his way up through Aircraft Crew Chief, Quality Assurance Inspector, and various supervisory roles, becoming Field Maintenance Superintendent and then Base Environmental Manager. Through hard work Bill achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, the highest rank for enlisted personnel.

Following retirement he became a real estate broker-salesperson with Coldwell Banker General Properties in St. Joseph. In his spare time, Bill started playing the guitar and also took harmonica lessons. Bill’s greatest success in life was the loving family relationships that he developed and nurtured over the years. On January 30, 1965 he married Mary Catherine Grace. Their favorite times were spent raising their four children, and spending time with their ten grandchildren. 

Bill and Mary shared a love of travel, taking their kids on many memorable family vacations. Mary passed away in 2013, a month prior to their 49th wedding anniversary.

A few years later, Bill was fortunate to meet and marry Marjorie “Marji” O’Neal Pettry on April16, 2016, with whom he enjoyed 8 years of marriage. In addition to their strong faith in God, they shared a love of family. Some of their favorite pastimes included dancing, fishing, and watching Chiefs games. Marji provided loving care when Bill received cancer treatment in 2023and more again in the last weeks of his life. Bill is survived by Marji, his children and grandchildren: Jennifer (Gary) – Jacob, Daniel, Toby; Kevin (Kathryn) – Rebecca, Jacquelyn; Chris (Carley) – Sabrina, Katie, Colin; and Angela –Oliver, Alexis. Also, brothers Sam (Vivian) and Mike (Mary) and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. Bill’s faith was very important to him and he was a lifelong Catholic, serving in various roles at St. Francis Xavier Church, of which he was a member since 1965.

William Joel Wright, 87, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2024. Hewas born in a farm home about 1 mile N/E of Perrin, Missouri to Joel Clyde (“Mick”) and GenevaReva (Golden) Wright. It was the Great Depression and life was hard on the farm. His parents told the story that he was the “only” thing they produced that year on the farm. Those who knew and loved him, or who worked with him through the years, counted Bill as a role model and great presence in their lives.Bill attended a one-room schoolhouse, the Martin School, in rural Clinton County and then high school in Plattsburg, Missouri, graduating in 1955. He attended U.S. Trades School in Kansas City, training for auto mechanic, graduating in May 1956 and working for various auto dealerships/parts supply stores. He found his calling, though, when he joined the Missouri Air National Guard on Feb. 14, 1958, of which he was a member for the next 39 years.Following his Basic Military Training for the Reserves, he was a self-employed farmer from 1958to 1962, when he was offered full-time employment and began his Missouri Air National Guard Military Technician Training. At that time, his military assignment was for Flight Engineer (1962-69), for which he also trained.In the Military Technician area, Bill began as a Flight Line Mechanic, then worked his way up through Aircraft Crew Chief, Quality Assurance Inspector, and various supervisory roles, becoming Field Maintenance Superintendent and then Base Environmental Manager. Through hard work Bill achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, the highest rank for enlisted personnel.Following retirement he became a real estate broker-salesperson with Coldwell Banker General Properties in St. Joseph. In his spare time, Bill started playing the guitar and also took harmonica lessons. Bill’s greatest success in life was the loving family relationships that he developed and nurtured over the years. On January 30, 1965 he married Mary Catherine Grace. Their favorite times were spent raising their four children, and spending time with their ten grandchildren. Bill and Mary shared a love of travel, taking their kids on many memorable family vacations. Mary passed away in 2013, a month prior to their 49th wedding anniversary.A few years later, Bill was fortunate to meet and marry Marjorie “Marji” O’Neal Pettry on April16, 2016, with whom he enjoyed 8 years of marriage. In addition to their strong faith in God, they shared a love of family. Some of their favorite pastimes included dancing, fishing, and watching Chiefs games. Marji provided loving care when Bill received cancer treatment in 2023and more again in the last weeks of his life. Bill is survived by Marji, his children and grandchildren: Jennifer (Gary) – Jacob, Daniel, Toby; Kevin (Kathryn) – Rebecca, Jacquelyn; Chris (Carley) – Sabrina, Katie, Colin; and Angela –Oliver, Alexis. Also, brothers Sam (Vivian) and Mike (Mary) and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. Donald Walter Hanson, Sr., 80, Savannah, MO, passed from this life on September 7, 2024 at Mosaic Life Care.

Donald was born on February 15, 1944 to Donald J. Hanson and Willma Lee (Pike) Hanson. On August 6, 1977 he and Linda Irene Gross were united in marriage. &nbsp;

Don was full of life, he was always up for an adventure, and told everyone how “good his health was,” Don was getting ready for a trip with his son-in-law to visit a bunch of National parks all over the United States. &nbsp;He loved to travel all over visiting Las Vegas multiple times. He enjoyed his bi-weekly trips with his grandson, Kyle, talking life and crazy adventures the two wanted to take. He was a family man with spending lots of time with his daughter, son-in-law, grandson, and his family. He enjoyed his weekly meals and outings with family and friends. He was always cracking jokes and trying to see just how far he could take surprising people. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and collecting multiple different things.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Linda Groce Hanson; his parents, Donald J. and Willma Lee Hanson, and his brother, Roger (Sylvia) Hanson.

He is survived by his daughter, Leanne Hallowell; his son-in-law, Ron Hallowell; daughter, Donna L. Fischer; sons, Donald W. Hanson, Jr, and James C. Hanson: his grandkids, Michelle Gay, Michael Gay, Derrick &nbsp;(Maria) Spalding, and Kyle (Chantal) Hallowell, along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. &nbsp;Special thank you to Erik and Tina Cook for always watching out and welcoming Donald in their lives.

Donald was not a fan of funerals and has requested no service after his death. His wishes were to be cremated and joined together with his wife, Linda, in their burial place in Memorial Park.

He was born October 19, 1963, to Donald Sr. and Marion (Hamilton) Briggs in Knoxville, Iowa.

Briggs, 60, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, September 6, 2024.He was born October 19, 1963, to Donald Sr. and Marion (Hamilton) Briggs in Knoxville, Iowa.He was a member of the United States Army.Terry enjoyed being out in nature, whether he was hunting, fishing or mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed woodworking and video games.Terry worked alongside his family at Briggs Drywall for fifteen years.He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Jimmy Briggs, and Danny and Mike Norton.Survivors include his children, Danielle Parlier and Teri Lynn Carmichael; his siblings, Donald Briggs Jr., Lori Howard, Sherri Williams and Sandy Norton; and his grandchildren, Lilah Parlier, Ringo Parlier, Taleah Parlier, Jimmy Carmichael and Noah Carmichael.Cremation under the direction of Simplify Cremations &amp; Funerals.<figure>
