Paul Perez was born June 21,1931 to Julian and Catalina Perez. He was the 5th son of 11 children. 

Paul entered the United States Army from August 5th, 1952, until July 23,1954. His service was terminated by an Honorable Release from active duty ranking as a Sergeant. Paul was married to Marcella Munoz Perez on February 9th, 1952, they moved briefly to South Carolina on the outskirts of Fort Jackson, from there he was shipped to Greenland and stationed on a top-secret military base. After his release from the service Paul and his wife and two young sons Richard and Michael lived in Topeka Kansas, he and Marcella welcomed 2 girls- Barbara and Karen. 

With Paul working on the Union Pacific Railroad, His older brother Everisto convinced him to transfer to the Kansas City RR yards where he advanced from section gang to assistant welder under his good friend Santiago (Joe) Chavez. They lived in a one-bedroom trailer right off of State Avenue. Again, his older brother Everisto convinced him to go west into the Stony Point South neighborhood and Marcella and Paul purchased a 3-bedroom house by that time another daughter Sandra would arrive and 4 years later the youngest son Jack would join the family. Paul worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 40 years, retiring in 1974. 

After retirement he worked for Golden Acers Nursing Home for eight years. &nbsp;Paul and his family enjoyed summer cook outs with the neighbors, camping to Colorado, South Dakota, Arkansas Wyoming, and even Mexico. Eventually they would move to Duluth Kansas where they resided until 2019 when Paul was admitted to the Onaga Rehab to present day. Paul and Marcella celebrated their 71st anniversary on February 9th, 2023. &nbsp;

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Vic, Everisto, Marcella, Louise, Katie, Margie, and Betty; two sons, Richard and Jack Perez. 

Survivors include his wife, Marcella; a son, Michael (Georgia) Perez three daughters, Barbara (Leonard) Alcala, Karen Carnoali and Sandra (Charles) LeRoux; two brothers John and Jake Perez; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Perez; seven-grandsons Tony, Christopher, Lenny, Shane, Pat, Charlie, and John; five granddaughters Michelle, Jessica, Joanna and Sarah, Kathryn. &nbsp;13 great-grandkids Jeffrey, Jordyn, Eric, Graham, Anthony, Christian, Hunter, Abigail, James, Gracie, Amy, Abe, Ronan and one great-great-granddaughter Erie Breeann. We will miss Paul’s gentle spirit and his loving ways.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 P.M. Friday, July 14, 2023, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. The visit will be Friday from 11: A.M. until the services.

Nancy A. Brockhoff, 85, of rural Fairview, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, July 8, 2023, at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Hiawatha.

Nancy was born at Pawnee City, Nebraska, the only child of Chester T. and Louise J. Catlett Bloom. She grew up in Pawnee City where she received her education from local schools, graduating from high school with the class of 1955.

She met and later married Norman L. Brockhoff, September 8, 1957, at the Baptist Church in Fairview. They lived all of their married life in the Fairview area. She worked as a bookkeeper for Brockhoff Feed Yards, the Fairview Elevator, and later years for Berwick Oil Distributor of Bern. In recent years, she was working at the Brown County Transfer Station. &nbsp;

Nancy was a people person and enjoyed being with family and friends. She had a great personality and sense of humor that she always had the last word!

Sadly she was preceded in death by her immediate family members within 7 years of her death: her husband Norm in 2019, daughter Teresa Althouse, sons: &nbsp;Charlie Brockhoff, and David Brockhoff. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her grandchildren: Emily (Brian) Hess, Jake (Caitlyn) Althouse, Ben (Megan) Brockhoff, Brad (Meagan) Brockhoff, and Louis (Trina) Althouse with seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister in law Joyce Brockhoff, and a dear friend Carol&nbsp; Hanrahan.

Nancy’s wishes were to have a private family inurnment at the Old Fairview Cemetery. Reverend Michael Dunaway will officiate.

Donald Edward Searcy 83, of Weston, Missouri passed away Sunday July 9, 2023 at his home. He was born April 20, 1940 in Weston, Missouri son of the late Katherine &amp; Elvin Searcy. 

He graduated from Weston High School, and was a lifelong farmer of Tobacco and row crops. He loved to fish, turkey and deer hunt, and camping. 

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Alfred Ray Searcy. 

He is survived by wife, Kala Searcy of the home, sister, Nancy Wilson, stepson, Brandin Raney, and stepdaughter, Kimberly Raney. 

He will be cremated under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home. Graveside memorial service and inurnment 1:00 pm Saturday, July 22, 2023 at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Weston, MO.

Linda Carol Davis, 75 of Independence, MO passed away July 9, 2023. &nbsp;

She was born on October 24, 1947, to Eugene and Evelyn (Schneider) Bauer in Independence, MO where she grew up and graduated from Van Horn High School .&nbsp;

Linda retired as an air traffic controller after 20+ years of service. She was an avid history buff and enjoyed reading and spending time at the lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Evelyn Bauer and her brother John Bauer.

Linda is survived by her son Jason Davis and wife Audri; her daughter Holly Davis; grandchildren Jason Matthew Davis, Cody Rash, Lea Davis, Alex Davis, Declan Miller, Kaylie Davis and Conner Miller; sister Judy Shelton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.&nbsp;

The family will host a Celebration of Life Visitation from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Monday July 17th at the Fountains at Greenbriar in the Truman Room, 2100 South Swope Drive, Independence, MO 64057.

 He worked at Midwest Scrap Metal for several years. 

Gilbert was preceded in death by wife, Kimberly Ann Cooper, sister, Tammy Jarrett, and his parents. 

Survivors include daughters, Jamie Smith, Tasha Nold, and Alexis Amos, step daughters, Heather (JR) Stallard, and Amanda &nbsp;Farmer, step son, Richey Farmer, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, brothers, Hank , Joe, and Thomas Cooper of St. Joseph, MO.

Lorene Rose (Miller) Younger passed away on July 9, 2023, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Born on January 25, 1936, in Wathena, Kansas, Lorene was a cherished member of her community and will be remembered for her kindness and dedication to her family.

A proud graduate of Wathena High School, class of 1954, Lorene continued her education at Platte Business College in St. Joseph.

She spent many years bartending at the VFW, where she was a familiar and friendly face to many. Her dedication to her community extended beyond her work, as she was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Savannah, Missouri. Lorene was also a devoted member of the St. Joseph Cathedral Church, where she found great comfort and fellowship.

Beyond her work and community involvement, Lorene had a zest for life that was evident in her many interests. She enjoyed playing bingo and bowling, activities that allowed her to connect with friends and share in laughter and camaraderie. Lorene was also a talented crocheter, creating beautiful pieces that will serve as lasting reminders of her creativity and skill. Above all, Lorene cherished spending time with her grandchildren. She took great joy in their accomplishments and was their biggest cheerleader.

Lorene was the daughter of Andrew and Aurelia Miller and was one of nine children. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, and three brothers.

She is survived by her children, Cathy Davis (Doug), Jeanie Eidson (David), Tony Allen, and Bob Allen. She was a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Lorene also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Steven R. Burns passed away peacefully on July 8, 2023, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri. Born on February 6, 1950, in Wilmington, Ohio, he was a creative soul who left an indelible mark on the lives of everyone he met.

Steven was an Army veteran of 20 years and after retiring served as a supervisor for an additional 20 years. His courage and dedication were evident in his service to his country, and he carried these traits into every aspect of his life. Steven was a dedicated and loving family man, always putting his family first and ensuring they felt loved and cared for.

Steven was a talented artist, and a valued member of the Midwest Artists Association. His creativity shone through in his artwork, and he found great joy in sharing his passion with others. He was also an avid fisherman, often spending his free time by the water, rod in hand, enjoying the tranquility of nature.

Steven was preceded in death by his parents, James Burns and Alieen Chastain; his son, Patrick Burns; and his brother, Larry Burns.

He is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Mary Ann Burns, whom he married on September 18, 1971.

In addition to his wife, Steven is survived by his daughters, Mary Reynolds (Travis) and Ann Martinez (Jeff); his grandchildren, Michail Reynolds, Sherydan Reynolds, and Catherine Martinez; his sisters, Debbie Overmier and Janice Chastain Smith (Donald); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Steven R. Burns 1950 - 2023

Michael P. Smith, 58, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, July 7, 2023.

He was born August 2, 1964 in St. Joseph to Melvin and Patricia (Ingram) Smith. Mike grew up in St. Joseph and attended Central High School.

While working at auto parts stores and most recently at Redline Trailers, Mike was known around town as a helpful and friendly mechanic who would drop everything to come help anyone whose car had broken down. He had a passion for drag racing, going with friends and family to the Ice Cream Cruise every year.

Mike also coached various sports teams for his children and was a longtime member of Central Christian Church. He didn’t know a stranger. Everywhere he went someone always knew him. His family was his pride and joy, especially his grandsons. Mike touched many lives and will leave a big hole in our family.

He was preceded in death by his son, Dalton Lee Smith; his mother, Pat Smith; and his brother-in-law, John Schellhorn.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Maureen (DeHart) Smith; his children, Brandon Smith, Aaron Smith (Jacqueline Johnson), and Connor Smith (Kaitlyn); stepchildren, Amber Schubert (Charles) and Mitchell Schubert (Sara); two grandsons, Silas and Beckett Smith; his father, Melvin Smith; siblings, Tony Guskos (Tina), Jennifer Taylor, Shirley Schellhorn, Stephanie Smith, Corey Smith (Sharon), and Tracie Smith-Carpentier; numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.

June Ide Davis, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, July 7, 2023.

She was born June 30, 1931 in Tacoma, Washington, to William and Edith (Schnugger) Starkell. She grew up in Tacoma, then moved to San Diego in her early 20s. She then moved to Santa Clara, then Fremont, California, where she raised her children and was an accountant for the Santa Clara Public School District. Upon retirement, she relocated to St. Joseph.

June married Frederick Davis on February 17, 1996. He preceded her in death.

A very fun-loving and sweet woman, June enjoyed playing Bingo and going to casinos.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Fred Ide and Fred Davis; her parents; daughters, Wendy Cooper and Kathy Jolly; and grandson, Zach Jolly.

Survivors include her children, Fred Ide (Crystal), Warren Ide, Neal Barnes (Terri), and Stacy Silva (Joe); seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was passionate about Religious Outreach work and loved to help underprivileged people.

Her hobbies that she enjoyed various crafts; including sewing, crocheting, and quilting.

Carolyn was preceded in death by both parents, a grandson, Jared James Allen Hintz, a brother, Dale Barnett, and a sister, Denise Barnett Neuworth.

Kathy Louise Leeper, 76 of White Cloud, KS passed peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Vintage Park, Hiawatha. Kathy was born on January 29th, 1947 at White Cloud, KS to the late Kenneth and Louise Rodecap Edie.

Patrick and Kathy were united in marriage January 29, 1965 in Falls City, Nebraska. She survives. They were proud parents of a daughter Patricia Leeper of Hiawatha, KS, three sons: Dennis Leeper of Hiawatha, Donnie Leeper of Daytona, FL and Danny (Alana) Leeper of St. Joseph, MO. She was blessed with 18 grandchildren: Rachel (David Crawley) of Horton, Samantha (Robert) Reynolds of Hiawatha, I’Quajanae (Javon) Henderson of Hiawatha, I’Quaveayre (Bubba) Jackson of White Cloud, Robert Leeper of Topeka, Susan (Erick) Oreskovich of Beatrice, NE, Destiny Simpson of Fairview, KS, Jayden Behrends of Ashland, NE, Colby Elms of Falls City, NE, Justin (Rachel) Leeper of Lincoln, NE, Taylor Wild of St. Joseph, MO, Kelsey (Travis) Lock of Milligan, NE, Bruce Leeper of St. Joseph, MO, and Thatcher Leeper of St. Joseph. MO. and 36 great grandchildren.

Kathy was a member of White Cloud Christian Church where she attended until moving to Hiawatha.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening, dancing, canning, cooking, and would never turn down a chance to spend time with family. She enjoyed their little farm in White Cloud where she raised chickens, rabbits, and Bud the Emu, who turned out to not be a Bud. In her later years Kathy enjoyed playing bingo, doing crafts, eating meals with her 3 friends: Deb, Sharon, and the late Mary Jane Waggoner. While at Vintage Park, Kathy enjoyed spending her evenings visiting and watching TV with her beloved friend Deb. Kathy was provided excellent care by Vintage Park, and was loved by many.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her spouse in February 2023, her parents, a granddaughter Andrea Elms and 5 unborn great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Tuesday, where the family will meet from 5 until 7 p.m. The celebration of eternal life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday&nbsp;(PLEASE NOTE TIME&nbsp;CHANGE)&nbsp;July 12th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. Cremation is planned after the services. Ethel Rosetta Maddox, 73, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Sunday, July 9, 2023 at her home. She was born April 19, 1950 in St. Joseph, daughter of Lottie Bailey. 

Ethel married Tommie Maddox on March 3, 1989. She worked many years as a Nurses Aide. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family, especially at cookouts and family get-together's.  Ethel was a member Mitchell Park Christian Church. 

She was preceded in death by mother, Lottie Bailey, her daughters, Sherry Byers and Connie Rose-Scott, brother, Francis Bailey and sisters, Emma May Bailey and Winona Bailey. 

Survivors include her husband, Tommie Maddox of the home, her children, Nancy (Larry) Byers of Bennington, NE, Billy Hurt, Jr. of Council Bluffs, IA, and Roger Scott, Jr. of St. Joseph, brother, Jimmie Bailey of Highland, KS, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ella Reece Ann Scott 17, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2023. She was born July 25, 2005 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Emily Gallus and &nbsp;Cory Scott. 

She graduated from Platte County High School, class of 2023, and she also attended the Northland Career Center, where she studied Culinary Arts. Ella worked in the Food Service Department at Liberty Hospital. She held both Orange and Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do, and she had participated in Robotics Competitions. Ella had the most amazing red curly hair. She loved trying new foods, and she loved her plants. She was an avid gardener, and loved spending time with her friends and playing video games, especially Adventure Time. 

Ella was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Cara Ann Ferrier, maternal step-grandmother, Angela Gallus, and paternal grandparents, Randy and Shelly Scott. 

Survivors include: her mother, Emily Gallus (James Pratt) of Weatherby, MO, her dad, Cory Scott of Platte City, MO, maternal step-grandfather, Steve Ferrier of Easton, MO, maternal grandfather, Stephen Gallus of Weatherby, MO, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Weldon Bruce Watkins, Sr. 83, St. Joseph, Missouri; passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Weldon was born on November 27, 1939 in Gower, Missouri, to the late Samuel and Leah (Divelbless) Wakins. He was a graduate of Stewartsville High School and served his country in the United States Navy.

Weldon served as Captain of the St. Joseph Fire Department for over twenty one years. He also worked for Standard Parking for fifteen years before retiring.

Weldon was a member of the Cornerstone Church. He could often be found tinkering with cars, building models with popsicle sticks and listening to the Royals on the radio.&nbsp;

Weldon married Linda Gray on June 22, 1970 and recently celebrated fifty-three years of marriage. She survives him of the home.

Additional survivors include his children, Weldon Watkins, Jr. (Teresa), Minnesota; Brook Watkins (Amanda), of the home; Dena Smith (Frank), Jonesburg, MO; nephew, Tobey Simpson (Debbie); grandchildren, Camdyn, Maveryk and Adalyne Watkins; Kyler Watkins, Jarrett McCrary, Sarah, Jacob, Kristy, Franky and Scott; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Myvalon Haney, Xenia Bannister and uncle, Ben Watkins.

In addition to his parents, Weldon was preceded in death by his father-and mother-in-law, Rev. Lon and Leafhie Gray and his son, Daniel Watkins.

Ronald "Ron" C. Long, 67, Faucett, Missouri; passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Ron was born on January 16, 1956 in Billings, Montana to the late Sherleen Morrow. He graduated from Benton High School.&nbsp;

Mr. Long served his country in the US Army 1972 - 1975, where he was stationed in Germany.

After twenty-nine years, Ron retired from Prime Tanning (Blueside).

Ron was an avid fan of Da Bears and enjoyed watching Westerns, gun collecting, fishing, shooting pool and above all spending time with his grandkids and family.

Ron married Rita Karn on April 5, 1981 in Fanning, Kansas. &nbsp;They celebrated forty-two years of marriage and to that union four children were born. Ron was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Ron is survived by his wife, Rita; children, Laurie (Malcolm) Lockerby, Ronald (Courtney) Long, Samantha (Shawn) Head and Allyson (Jared) Hatton; grandchildren, Ryan, Kenley, Johnathan, Christopher, Isabell, Jazmine, Ki, Emery, Kimber, and Adam (A-Ray).

In addition to his mother, Ron was preceded in death by his step-father Louis B. McQueen, Jr., maternal grandparents and Chester Da Bear, his beloved cocker spaniel.

Mr. Long has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel, where the family will receive friends Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A private inurnment will be held at The Old Brick Cemetery, Albany, Missouri at a later date.

Loretta was born on April 14, 1941 in Savannah, Missouri to the late Lester and Bertha (Brinson) Herring. She grew up attending country schools in Savannah, Guilford and South Nodaway.

Loretta enjoyed her work as a waitress. She loved to dance, ride her horse, work cattle, crochet and quilt.

In addition to her parents, Loretta was preceded in death by her son, Ronnie Auten and daughter, Debra McKee.

Carolyn J. Smither, 85, of St. Joseph, passed away July 9, 2023 at her home, surrounded by family. She was born in Pollocksville, North Carolina on July 6, 1938 to the late Julian C. and Rebecca Jenkins and Virginia (Howie) Jenkins.

&nbsp;She married Harlan H. Smither on April 19, 1957 in St. Joseph, Missouri, and he preceded her in death on August 17, 2020; after 63 years of marriage. They had three beautiful children; Wayne, Sherlyn, and Keith.

Carolyn retired as a secretary from AG Processing in 2000. &nbsp;

Survivors include her children Wayne (Lori) Smither, Sherlyn Jurgensen, Keith (Teresa) Smither; grandchildren Jonathan, Michael (Kathy), Chris (Frankie), Stephanie, Raven, Riley, Lexi, Drew (Lauren), Hannah (Stephen), Travis (Chloe) Angie;&nbsp; 13 great-grandchildren; sister Priscilla Jenkins; sister-in-law Hester (Frank) Hess; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter Haylee Smither; three sisters Madeena Jenkins, Edrene Locklear, Christine Beal; and sister-in-law Betty June Parker.

She was a very active member of Green Valley Baptist Church, where she played the piano. She was an accomplished pianist, liked to sew, loved to read and travel. She loved her garden and was well known for her tomatoes. She was a dedicated and sacrificial mother and grandmother, and was very well organized in everything.

Services will be Friday, July 14, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Green Valley Baptist Church. Visitation will precede the funeral from 12 noon until time of service. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery; Amazonia, MO.

He was born January 6, 1954 to Vincent and Anna Lager in Maryville, Missouri and was one of 15 children.

Louis served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

He was a roadmaster for the Union Pacific Railroad for 42 years, and a member of both the Elks Lodge and American Legion.

Louis enjoyed riding his Harley and living life to the fullest.

Survivors include his wife, Paula, of the home; 8 children, Shane, Eric and his wife Karla, Melony, Joe, Aaron and his wife Cassie, Rachel and her husband Gabe, Ericka, and Kara; plus 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Anna May Gillespie, 100, of King City, MO passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023 at a Stanberry, MO nursing home.

She was born on April 30, 1923 in Harrison County, Missouri the daughter of David and Mary Ethel (Hefner) McCollum.

On May 10, 1947, she married James Eldon Gillespie in Olathe, Kansas. He preceded her in death.

Anna was a member of the Hammer Memorial United Methodist Church of King City and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved card games, singing and dancing, and was an avid reader.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Austin Chambers; daughter-in-law, Sharon Gillespie; son-in-law, John Tompkins; and siblings, John, Wilbur, Wendell, Malcom, D.L. Jr., Lenore, Rowena, Ruth, Helen, Mary, and Elma.

Anna is survived by her son, Jim (Tammy) Gillespie, St. Joseph, MO; daughters, Karen Gillespie, Marietta, GA, Kathy Darnell, King City, MO, Terri Gillespie, Independence, MO, and Judy (Dennis) Chambers, Savannah, MO; grandchildren, Jordan (Alacey) Chambers, Brett (Katy) Chambers, Shelby Dudley; great grandchildren, Bristol, Saylor, and A.J.; brother-in-law, Victor Gene (Joyce) Gillespie; sister-in-law, Lola Mae (Porter) Harryman; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born on October 18, 1953 in Buchanan Count  to the late Francis and Violet Bowman.

He married Kari on January 15, 1999 in Savannah Mo. She survives him of the home.

He was a forklift operator at Johnson Controls and was with the company for 37 years until his retirement.

Jake loved his garage and that is where he left this world. During this life he was an accomplished martial arts tournement fighter. In addition,  he was a hard worker, providor, and home builder.  His life was in his shop where he loved a challenge. he was involved in a building a land cruisers and putting lifts on 4x4 trucks. He had a passion for Corvette's, motorcycles and trucks. He could find a diamond in the rough.

He was an animal lover, dogs in particular. Stray animals always found a friend in Jake.
