It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Daniel Donan on September 22, 2023. Born on March 14, 1972, Dan was an unforgettable presence in the lives of everyone he met, remembered for his love, enthusiasm, and willingness to take the road less traveled.

He leaves behind Rhys Donan, his loving son.&nbsp; His mother, Juanita Donan, his partner Melanie Stewart, his sisters, Jeanette Westfall and Mariann Hawk, and his cousins, Pinetree Donan and Gwenevere Helzer, also survive him, carrying with them the love and wisdom he imparted. He also leaves behind too many friends to count, all who consider themselves fortunate to have known and loved him.

Dan was predeceased by his father, Robert Donan, whom he held in treasured memory.&nbsp; The two enjoyed a great adult friendship and had many a political argument over the kitchen table.

Known for his adventure-seeking spirit, Daniel loved role-playing games and venturing into the depths of the imagination. These fantastical journeys were not merely a pastime, but a reflection of his own approach to life: one of curiosity, courage, and boundless exploration.

Dan loved deeply and lived fully, enriching the lives of those around him with his passion, empathy, and infectious humor.

The greatest lesson he left behind was the echoes of his mantra: "Enjoy your life." Through these words, Daniel encouraged us all to savor every moment, find joy in the simplest of things, and above all, to love and be loved.

Leslie Albert Auten 77, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at his home in St. Joseph, MO. He was born April 28, 1946 in Sheridan, MO, son of the late Florence and Pete Auten.

 He graduated from Grant City High School and married Tama Herd on September 24, 1966. He served in the United States Navy for 4 years and 16 years with the Missouri Air National Guard is a veteran Viet Nam War. He worked at Wire Rope in the maintenance department, Boehringer Ingleheim, Sara Lee as a Boiler Operator. He enjoyed riding motorcycles with his church group, hunting, collecting guns, reloading ammunition, attending car shows with his rebuilt 1965 purple Barracuda but most of all spending time with his family. He was a member of American Legion, CMA Christian Motorcycle Association, serving as the Vice President and Chaplain and the Abundant Faith Church of God serving as the clerk and a Deacon. 

Leslie was preceded in death by his parents, son in law, Jimmy Wilson, brother, Ralph Auten, sisters, Virginia Robison, and Vera Hamblin, brother, Duane Auten and brother in law, Russ Coleman.

Helen Maxine Evans Young died on September 15, 2023 at LaVerna Senior Living, Savannah, MO. She was born March 3, 1926 in King City, MO, to Everett and Stella (Williams) Evans, who proceeded her in death. 

Maxine graduated from King City High School in 1944.On April 8, 1949 she married Russell E. Young. They were married for 60 years, living all their married life in St. Joseph, MO. Russell proceeded her in death on May 14, 2009.Maxine worked at three local banks, retiring from American Bank after 30 years. She then retired from K-Mart in 2002. She also volunteered for InterServ and Kendallwood Hospice. 

Maxine was a member of the Robidoux Rebekeh Lodge for 38 years, having held several offices. Maxine was of the Christian faith.

She was proceeded in death by her brother, W.D. "Bill" Evans and his wife Helen, sister, Geraldine Bracken and her husband Charles, brother-in-law, Marion Spiers, and son-in-law, John Hood. 

She is survived by three daughters; Jacqueline Zimmers, Powhattan, KS, Constance Rankin and husband Michael, St. Joseph, MO, and Marilyn Rodriguez-Hood, St. Joseph, MO. Seven grandchildren; Vickie (Barry) Schuetz, Rhonda (Caleb) Crook, John (Candice) Zimmers, Christina (Brad) Sievers, Trisha Rodriguez, Brandon (Kristen) Rodriguez, and Brittany Rodriguez. Nine great-grandchildren; Carolyn Schuetz, Alexandra Crook, Raven, Ava and Liam Zimmers, Abigail and Ava Sievers, and Crosby and Charleigh Rodriguez. Four step great-grand-children, Devon, Dennis, Vienna, and Scarlett Bruna. One great-great grand-daughter, Briar Chilcoat, and one great-great grand-son, Wyatt Tripp Huestis. She is also survived by her sister, Martha Spiers, Maysville, MO, and several nieces and nephews. 

Graveside services 1:00 PM Saturday, September 30, 2023 at the King City Cemetery, King City, MO. Maxine has been cremated under the direction of Rupp Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Landra; and four siblings.

Survivors include her children, Annette, Bill Jr., Michelle, Randy, Starla, Troy, Floyd, and Shawn; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family; and her canine companion, Tidbit.

Wanda Fern Noll, age 92, of Atchison, KS, died Sunday, September 24, 2023, at the Atchison Senior Village.&nbsp;

Private family services will be held with interment in Sunset Memory Gardens. Cremation care has been entrusted to the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Wanda was born on November 19, 1930, in Oak Mills, Kansas, the daughter of the late Charles G. Hoffman and Iris (Davies) Hoffman. She graduated from Atchison High School before attending Atchison Vo-Tech.&nbsp;

She worked as a secretary for Burkart Exterminators and later owned and operated Wanda’s Liquor Store until retiring. She enjoyed multiple trips to Las Vegas, she visited there over twenty-five times, for a week or more at a time and was well known at most of the local casinos.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children, Darla Enzbrenner, of St. Joseph, MO; a son, Dr. Nicholas (Laura) Noll, of Smithville, MO; her spouse and love of her life, David E. Pickman; her grandchildren, Curtis Noll,II, Amanda (Patrick) Myer, Sophia Enzbrenner, Rachel Noll, Nathan Noll, Ellie Noll, Allison Smith; seven great grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Ellen Noll.&nbsp;

David was born on July 22, 1969, in St. Joseph, MO to John and Karen Barber.He attended Atchison County Community Schools and lived in Atchison most of his life.

He was proceeded in death by his father John Barber.

Survivors include his mother, Karen Barber, Cummings, KS, two sisters Debbie (Marlin) Fuhrman, Cummings, KS, and Sandy (Jack) Healy, Atchison, KS and one brother, John Barber Hollister, CA, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Ronald Eugene Silvey, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 23, 2023, surrounded by his family.

He was born January 8, 1940 in St. Joseph to Walter and Hazel (Smith) Silvey. He grew up in St. Joseph and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as soon as he could, where he proudly served his country.

After living in California for a while, he returned to St. Joseph, where he married the love of his life, Nancy Irene Osborne, on May 5, 1966. Together they raised four beautiful girls before her passing on June 20, 2015.

He worked for Continental Can for many years, and after it closed, he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for many years, retiring in 2000.

Ronald fully enjoyed retirement, traveling with Nancy and family, spending time with his grandchildren, and just relaxing after many years on his feet. He also loved reading, mostly Westerns and true-crime stories, and old-time country music, especially Merle Haggard.

While Ronald was the strongest man his daughters ever knew, he also had an ornery sense of humor, making everyone laugh at family gatherings with his wiggling ears and duck quacks.

He loved animals, and they returned that love.

Ronald was an amazing presence in his family’s lives and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Nancy; daughter, Jodie Ward; his parents; and siblings, Carl Silvey, Betty Estes, and Shirley Clary.

Survivors include his children, Ronna Clark (Andy), Melissa Richie (Patrick), and Christine Duncan (Scott); grandchildren, Ryann Summerford, Derek Summerford (Shawna), and Jessica Summerford (Jaime King), Hunter, Camden and Heaven Richie, Drake and Baylor Duncan; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Rylan, Shelby, and Scarlett; siblings, Bill Silvey, Bobby Silvey, Charlotte Saxton, and Ilene Webb; numerous other extended family members and friends.

Ronald Eugene Silvey 1940 - 2023

Rodney Gene Blanton, 65, born on June 25, 1958, in Topeka, KS, passed away on September 23, 2023 at 7:30 AM.

Rodney was a skilled sheetrock construction worker by profession and approached his work with dignity and commitment. Those working alongside him admired him for his work ethic and friendly nature.

Fishing was Rodney's solace, with flathead catfish as his preference both in catching and at the dinner table. Fond memories are of his peaceful moments by the river's edge, rod in hand and contentment in his heart.

Rodney will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Mary Terryberry, his children, Onica and Andy Blanton, and his grandchildren, Kianna Grigsby, Kyleigh, and Asen Blanton. Those working alongside him admired him for his work ethic and friendly nature.Fishing was Rodney's solace, with flathead catfish as his preference both in catching and at the dinner table. She was born May 9, 1962 in Fall River, Massachusetts to Norman and Jean (Seymour) Roy.

Deborah married Edward DeSantiago on December 11, 1993. They later divorced but remained good friends.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a very giving person to anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Robert Roy.

Mark Ernest Wheeler, age 71, passed away September 20th at KU Medical Center. He was born February 9th,1952 to Merlin Ernest and Juanita Opal (Woolworth) Wheeler in Leavenworth Kansas. He was raised on a Dairy farm in Nortonville, Kansas until the family moved to Leavenworth. He attended Leavenworth public schools and High school.&nbsp;

He married Pamela Davis in 1972, they had two children Mark Jr and Adam. They divorced in 1982.In 1982 he was married to Elaine Kellogg until 2002. In 2002 he married Peggy Godding,she survives him at the home. &nbsp;

Mark owned and operated Wheeler Lowe foreign auto repair for 30 years before retiring in 2002. He fought the county over higher small business taxes and got to yell at the Governor of Kanss. He won, that was his crowning achievement.

From 2005-2009 he worked maintenance and security at Fort Leavenworth before becoming disabled.

Mark loved motorcycles and fast car. He once had a Red Camero with the license plate” Mad Mark”.

He loved his Kansas City Chiefs and enjoyed watching with his son Adam.

He was preceded in death by his parents, both sons. a nephew, Grandson Conner and brother-in-law Roy Mark Godding.

Mark is survived by his wife Peggy, his sister Carol (Cliff) Bond. Daughter in law Sarah Wheeler, grand kids Vincent and Carly Wheeler. Niece Camille Carson and nephew Craig Bond.&nbsp;

John Patrick Spaight Jr., 87, of Hiawatha, KS died early Friday morning, September 22, 2023 at the Maple Height Nursing Home where he had been for a short time.

John was born August 19, 1936 in St. Joseph, MO to John and Mary Halling Spaight. He attended schools in Doniphan County and graduated High School in 1954.

He married Mary Ellen Finney in 1962; she preceded him in death in 1978.

He married Rebecca Ann Gibbs October 2, 1982 at St. Benedict in Bendena, KS. She survives of the home.

John served in the Army National Guard from 1953 – 1981 where he received the National Defense Service Medal.

John helped with farm work, applied chemical to farm ground, and worked as a custom harvester for 12 years. He also was a mechanic and welded for numerous jobs throughout the years. Worked on and drove school bus for Mid-way school for many years. He later worked for 8 years at Banks Construction as a mechanic on heavy trucks. He retired in 2005.

John was very active in the community. He was a member of the Leona Sportsman Club from 1944-1965, Huron Fire Dept., Denton Fire Dept. 1957-1992, Hunter’s Education Instructor, member of the American Legion for 51 years, and member of the Elks Club in Hiawatha and Atchison with a combined membership of 49 years. He made the new cross on top of St Mary Catholic Church in Purcell. He loved playing Santa Claus for many years. He served several responsibilities for the church, including counting the collection money. John was a member of St. Mary in Purcell, St. Benedict in Bendena, St. John in El Dorado, KS, and St. Benedict in Atchison, KS. Lastly he attended St. Ann Catholic Church of Hiawatha. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, softball, and baseball in his spare time.

John is survived by his wife Rebecca, step children; Melvin Lee (Rosie) Ranck of Prosper, TX, Debra Sue (Gene) Atland of Hiawatha, and David Wayne (Tamsen) Ranck of Brighton, CO, sisters; Mary Geneva Buzard of St. Henry, OH, Rita Rose Kussman of Marceline, MO, and Carol Sue Doring of Overland Park, KS, 17 step grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; Mary Ellen Finney, twin boys; Harold and William Spaight; step son; Clovis James Ranck, brothers in law; Kenny Buzard, Michael Kussman, and Paul Doring.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2023 at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Bendena, KS. Father Dan Gardner will be the officiant. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Brown County Honor Guard will provide military services. Phyllis Jamison, 88, of Platte City, MO passed away on September 24, 2023.

She was born on December 16, 1934 to John Clifford and Lucille Abby (Walker) Martin in Atchison, KS. Phyllis grew up in the Atchison area where she attended school.

On June 17, 1960 she was united in marriage to George A. Jamison. After their they lived in the Platte City area where they made their home.

Phyllis worked for Hallmark Cards for 25 years. She loved gardening, fishing, and going to the Casino.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Marilyn Kay Gibson; granddaughter, Kelli Knighton; grandsons, Greg Jamison and Justin Heide; and son-in-law, Jon Hines.

Billy A. Edwards, 85, of Smithville, MO, formerly of Dearborn, MO passed away September 21, 2023.

He was born on September 12, 1938, to Ralph and Audrey (Boydston) Edwards in Smithville, MO. He grew up in Dearborn, MO and attended North Platte School. He then served his country in the United State Army where he was stationed in Alaska.&nbsp;

On June 4, 1960, he was united in marriage to Emma L. “Tee” Jameson. After their marriage they lived in Dearborn where they made their home. In 2014 they moved to Smithville, MO. Tee passed away on May 12, 2016.

Billy was a barber in Dearborn for several years and later retired from TWA as an aircraft mechanic.&nbsp;

He loved playing pool and spending time with his family. Billy and Tee enjoyed spending winters in Texas and they also had a newspaper route for the St. Joseph News Press. Billy was a great husband, dad and grandpa.&nbsp;

Billy was also preceded in death his parents; his brother and sisters and their spouses.&nbsp;

He is survived by his son Billy Shawn Edwards and wife Patty; grandchildren Noah and Tyler Edwards; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was born on November 12, 1947, to Leonard Kay, Sr. and Bessie Bernice (Reynolds) Musser in St. Joseph, MO. He grew up in Gower and in 1966 he graduated from Gower High School.&nbsp;

On February 25, 1971, he was united in marriage to Debra Lynn Lawson. After their marriage they lived in Gower where they made their home with their daughter Rachael. Debi passed away on January 18, 1980.

He delivered farm fuel and propane in the area for Frazier Oil until his retirement in 2018 after 42 years. Leonard was a member of the Gower JC’s, was the coach for the Gower Merchants slow pitch softball team and he was a member of the Gower Oldtimer’s Hall of Fame. He was a past member of the Gower Fire Protection Team where he had many positions including being the Chief. Leonard’s favorite pastime was scouting and hunting deer. He loved watching old westerns and most of all Leonard loved spending time with friends, family and his girls.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his wife, Debi Musser; his parents Kay and Bernice Musser; and his brother-in-law Ivan Herpel.

Geraldine A. “Gere” Greene, age 92, of Atchison, Kansas, died peacefully on Friday, September 22, 2023, at the Dooley Center at Mount St. Scholastica.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 11:00 A. M. at St. Benedict Church with Rev. Meinrad Miller, OSB as celebrant. Interment will be Friday, September 29th at 1:00 P.M. at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Solomon, Kansas. Gere was born May 7, 1931, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of William and Catherine Duncan Wolters. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salina, Kansas.

Gere served as an elementary school teacher for one year and then as a CMA for Home Health for ten years until her retirement. Her most important role was being a homemaker in the family home for her husband and her nine children.

She and James B. Greene were united in marriage on December 29, 1952, in Atchison, Kansas. Mr. Greene preceded her in death on February 26, 2011. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Meikle; a sister, Margaret Mary Johannes; and five brothers, Tom, Bill, Phil, John and Francis Wolters.

Geraldine A. “Gere” Greene, age 92, of Atchison, Kansas, died peacefully on Friday, September 22, 2023, at the Dooley Center at Mount St. Scholastica.Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 11:00 A. Ramona Lee Cowger, 91, of DeKalb, MO, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023 at a Kansas City, MO health care facility. She was born February 4, 1932 in Rural Dekalb, MO, daughter of Marie and Loren "L.C." Long. 

She attended the Bethel School and later DeKalb High School. On March 19, 1949, she married her husband of 56 years, Roy Cowger. &nbsp;Ramona worked many years for Stanley Home Products. She was also a devoted Homemaker, and a very caring and loving lady, who was always there for her family and provided a listening ear. Ramona could often be found outside enjoying her garden. &nbsp;One of many things she will be remembered for was her fall tradition of picking apples and making applesauce. Over 25 years, she was a devoted member of &nbsp;C.A.S.A (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Ramona was a proud longtime member of the former DeKalb United Methodist Church and also an advocate for carrying on the memory of the former Bethel School. 

Ramona was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roy Cowger, son, Rocky Cowger, and brother, Dean Long.

Leatha Nicholson 82, of Faucett, Missouri, passed away Friday, September 22, 2023 at her home in Faucett, MO. She was born August 12, 1941 in Springfield, MO, daughter of the late Bess &amp; Adrian Wright. 

She married Robert Nicholson on November 21, 1959, he passed away in 2020. She was the worlds best mom and grandma, who enjoyed sewing, cooking, making friends, and telling stories. She was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church. 

Leatha was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Eugene Nicholson, her parents, and ten brothers &amp; sisters. 

She is survived by sons; Bob (Kim) Nicholson, Faucett, MO, Wayne (Alma) Nicholson, San Antonio, TX, daughters; Lisa (Bill) Smith, Leavenworth, KS, Tracy (Carl) Zaborowski, Gentry, AR, and Jennifer (Doug) Tippett, Springdale, AR, sister, Jinny (Gary) Britton, Springfield, MO, and 17 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.

Wesley Roy Reed 62, of Elwood, KS, passed away Friday, September 22, 2023 at the Kansas University Medical Center. He was born July 8, 1961 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Mary and Sanford Reed. 

He graduated from Elwood High School,  class of 1979. He was the owner operator at Reed Sewer Service. Wes was a very kind hearted, and the sweetest generous man, who loved his poodles, fishing, horseshoes, music, and playing the guitar in several bands. He was a member of the Family Worship Center Church, St. Joseph, MO. 

Wes was preceded in death by wife, Betty Jean Reed, parents, sister, Linda Lewis, brother, Kenny Reed, and great nephew, Landon Lewis. 

Survivors include: three nieces, Kenah Reed (Rick James), Kelly Lewis, and Carie (Matt) Davis all of St. Joseph, MO, 9 great nieces and nephews, 4 step daughters, and several step grandchildren.

John Michael Thompson 75, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Friday, September 22, 2023 at his home in St. &nbsp;Joseph, MO. He was born January 24, 1948 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Betty and Wilbur Thompson. 

He graduated from Central High School 1966, and served in the United States Marines Corp, and is a veteran of the Viet Nam War. He is the recipient of 2 purple hearts, the National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. John retired from Quaker Oats after 31 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, mushroom and pheasant hunting, traveling, taking pictures, and spending time with his grandkids and family and the peace and serenity that the Nodaway river had to offer. He was a member of &nbsp;St. Patrick Catholic Church.

 John was preceded in death by his parents, son, Sean Michael Thompson, and brother, David Thompson.

Tracy Lee VanBelkum, 73, passed away on September 23, 2023, surrounded by his family. Born on December 21, 1949, Tracy lived a fulfilling life dedicated to his family, friends, and service.

A retired member of the Missouri National Guard, Tracy was a man of simple pleasures. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's swim meets, games and activities. He looked forward to the camaraderie of his friends and often gathered with them, sharing laughter and stories over the years.

Tracy was a devoted husband to Beth and a loving father to his children, Matt Coats (Jennifer) of Billings, MO, Jaime Perreca (Massimo) of Peculiar, MO, Melanie Nolting (Scott) of Kansas City, and Ryan VanBelkum (Alyssa)St. Joseph. His grandchildren: Nolan and Eli Coats, Gioia, Dominic, Luca, Giovanni, and Lia Perreca, Zoey and Avery Nolting, and Jameson VanBelkum. Tracy is also survived by his siblings Leslie VanBelkum, Sharon Barnett, and Debbie Tye. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Dorothy.

She was born on July 22, 1980, to Charles L. and Kim P. (Whitley) Ralston in St. Joseph, Missouri.

She worked at Children’s Mercy Hospital of Kansas City as a unit secretary for ten years.

Becky enjoyed taking pictures and playing with her granddaughters.

Junior was born on August 13, 1937, in Nodaway County, MO, his parents were Lester Ellis and Ruby (Riley) Roush, Sr. His parents preceded him in death.&nbsp; He was also preceded by his wife, Marjorie, and by his siblings, Loraine Freemeyer, Laberta Palmer, and Harold, Vervil, and Charles Roush, and his brother-in-law, Marvin Palmer.
