WICHITA, Kan. - The Missouri Western women's basketball team (15-5, 7-4) got back in the win column with a 70-59 victory at Newman (9-14, 4-9) Saturday that snapped a two-game skid for MWSU. The Griffons bested their win total from 2018-19 with eight games remaining in the season.

MWSU found itself down early, but only by three points and it was the last deficit for the Griffons who shot 46.7% from the field and 57.1% from 3-point range. Five Griffons scored in double figures, led by Chris Wilson's 17 points. Wilson was 8 of 14 from the field in her second game back from a knee injury.

- Missouri Western led by as many as 17 points.

- Newman cut the Griffon lead to nine late in the fourth quarter, the closest the Jets had been since early in the first.

- MWSU held Newman to just two first half points in the paint and outscored the Jets by 16 in the lane on the day (36-20).

Missouri Western women stop 2-game skid with 70-59 win at Newman

EDMOND, Okla. - The Northwest Missouri State University defeated the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos 63-60 in Edmond, Oklahoma. This is the first time in program history that the Bearcats have won back-to-back games on the road against the Bronchos. 

Going into this game the Bronchos were ranked third in the MIAA with a 9-3 MIAA record. The Bearcats were down 44-34 in the middle of the third quarter, and went on a 24-6 run to take a 58-50 lead in the fourth quarter. The Bearcats made 13 threes in the contest, shooting 41.9% from behind the three-point line. Northwest's defense shined in this game, holding Central Oklahoma to 33.8% from the field and only 23.1% from behind the arc. The 60 points that the Bronchos scored was tied for their second lowest scoring total on the year. The Bearcats outrebounded the Bronchos 39-36, which makes the Bearcats 6-0 when they grab more boards than their opponent. 

Jaelyn Haggard scored 15 points on 9 field goal attempts to lead the Bearcats in scoring. Mallory McConkey added 11 and Mia Stillman added 10. Stillman led Northwest with nine rebounds. McConkey led the Bearcats with 5 assists and 2 steals. The Bearcats were able to overcome 23 turnovers on the game. Northwest shot 14-18 from the free-throw line on the game. The Bearcat bench outscored the Bronchos bench 26-18. 

UCO only had two scorers in double figures on the game. Kelsey Johnson led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Micayla Haynes with 15. Clary Donica led UCO in rebounds with seven and Lauren Chancellor led the team with three assists. 

Northwest will be back in action against Central Missouri on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 5:30 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.

Northwest women upset Central Oklahoma 63-60

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Maik Kotsar had a season-high 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead South Carolina to a 76-54 victory over Missouri on Saturday.

The Gamecocks (13-8, 5-3 SEC) won for the fifth time in their past six league games after starting Southeastern Conference play 0-2.

The 6-foot-10 senior Kotsar was unstoppable at both ends of the floor for South Carolina. He made his first seven shots and had eight defensive boards in the opening half as the Gamecocks built a double-digit lead.

Kotsar also had four of South Carolina's nine blocks -- the team's best showing in SEC play this season.

Missouri (10-11, 2-6, which rallied from 20 points down to beat Georgia last Thursday, cut a 16-point lead to 52-43 with 11 minutes left. But Kotsar hit two free throws and a short jumper to start a 9-0 run and restore the Gamecocks' comfortable margin.

It was Kotsar's second double-double this season and fourth of his career.

Jermaine Couisnard finished with 15 points and AJ Lawson 13 off three 3-pointers for South Carolina.

Xavier Pinson had three of Missouri's four 3-pointers and led the Tigers with 12 points.

Missouri has lost five of its past six games.

South Carolina has played strong defense during its recent run and that continued against Missouri.

The Gamecocks held the Tigers to 1-of-10 shooting on the way to an 11-3 start. Things only got worse for Missouri after that.

South Carolina scored on five of six possessions in the opening period to stretch things to 30-15 on T.J. Moss' 3-pointer.

The Gamecocks forced nine turnovers and had eight blocks the first 20 minutes. Kotsar was a huge part of South Carolina's defense with eight defensive rebounds, four blocks and a steal in his 10 minutes.

The Tigers were without second- and third-leading scorers Mark Smith and Jeremiah Tilmon for this one. Smith came out in the second half of Missouri's last game with lower back issues and was out of the lineup at South Carolina.

Tilmon has missed the past eight games with a stress fracture in his left foot.

Missouri: The Tigers will struggle without the firepower of juniors Smith and Tilmon in the rotation. The two have combined for nearly 20 points and nine rebounds a game this season.

South Carolina: The Gamecocks are surging at the right time in order to make a run in the SEC. They have several winnable games this month and any hope of getting to the NCAA Tournament rests on them following a winning January with a more successful February.

Missouri goes to Texas A&amp;M on Tuesday night.

South Carolina plays at Ole Miss on Wednesday night.

Missouri gets blown out at South Carolina 76-54

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- David McCormack returned from a suspension and made his presence felt when Udoka Azubuike got in foul trouble.

Devon Dotson scored 21 points, Marcus Garrett added 15 points and No. 3 Kansas topped Texas Tech 78-75 on Saturday.

In his first game back after a two-game suspension, David McCormack contributed three blocks, six rebounds and six points.

"He gave us great minutes. When he was in he made some key plays that got the crowd into it," Dotson said. "He did some really great things out there tonight. I feel like he's a big reason we won this game today."

With Azubuike sidelined due to foul trouble, Kansas coach Bill Self turned to McCormack to pick up the slack after having served his two-game suspension. Contributing 20 minutes off the bench, a few key blocks and momentum-swaying dunks by the big man played a key role in the Jayhawks' slim victory.

"He's a great player," Tech's TJ Holyfield said. "He's very different than Azubuike because he has a face-up game."

The Jayhawks led 76-75 with 14 seconds to play before Ochai Agbaji knocked down two free throws and the Red Raiders were unable to come away with a basket to complete the upset.

Kansas (18-3, 7-1 Big 12) opened up the game scoring the first 10 points. Though Azubuike saw only seven first-half minutes due to two early fouls, Kansas took a 44-35 edge into halftime as Dotson posted 13 first-half points.

"We didn't really have our team in there. We're used to playing with Dok and he wasn't really a factor at all," Self said.

Texas Tech was able to cut an early 15-point deficit to a single possession as Jahmi'us Ramsey lead the way with 26 points. Weathering the Jayhawks' hot start, Texas Tech shot 42.6% from the field to remain within reach down the stretch.

Holding a mere 57-55 lead midway through the second half, the Jayhawks strung together a 9-0 run. Despite two late threes by Tech's TJ Holyfield to pull within four points, the Red Raiders could not overcome the streaky Kansas offense in their 78-75 loss. Holyfield finished with 19 points.

"This guy was dynamite and I hope that'll be part of the story tomorrow," Texas Tech coach Chris Beard said of Holyfield.

The Jayhawks have not trailed at all in two consecutive games after overpowering Oklahoma State 65-50 on Monday and maintaining the advantage all day against the Red Raiders despite minimal contributions from Azubuike (5 points).

After an overtime loss against then No.15-ranked Kentucky followed by an eight-point victory over then No. 12-ranked West Virginia, the Red Raiders again held close with a top-ranked opponent for the third-consecutive week.

No. 1 Baylor handedly defeating Iowa State and TCU, and No. 2 Gonzaga outlasting BYU and San Francisco, Kansas should hold steady at No. 3 with wins over Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

Playing without the efforts of Chris Clarke, who attempted to play but lacked movement due to an ankle injury, and Kevin McCuller, who's facing concussion protocol, Beard was impressed by the close-game effort of his program.

"To be missing two of our top seven or eight players and then come in here and get into a one possession game, I think that speaks pretty clearly on how valiant we were," Beard said.

Kansas: Facing a quick turnaround, the Jayhawks host Texas on Feb. 3.

MWSU baseball drops final two games at Oklahoma Baptist

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Derek Culver wanted to do something about West Virginia's worst loss of the season.

The sophomore had 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 12 West Virginia to a 66-57 victory over Kansas State on Saturday, giving coach Bob Huggins another milestone win.

The Mountaineers (17-4, 5-3 Big 12) bounced back from a loss at Texas Tech on Wednesday, improved to 11-0 at home and ended a three-game losing streak to Kansas State.

On Jan. 18 the Wildcats drubbed West Virginia 84-68 in which Culver, the Big 12's fourth-leading rebounder, was limited to eight points and three rebounds.

"They did us pretty bad last time at K-State," Culver said. "We don't forget anything."

With no one else on the team making more than three field goals, Culver took it upon himself to preserve the home win streak.

"We had to come out here and return the favor," Culver said. "We didn't really get them as bad as they did us at K-State, but we came out with aggression and tried to set the tone from the jump."

Huggins earned his 877th career win to move past Kentucky's Adolph Rupp into seventh place all time in Division I. Huggins hasn't paid much attention to the feat, preferring to deflect attention in the past week away from himself.

"You're not much of a player if you don't respond after a loss," Huggins said. "Anybody who's coached for a while will tell you, it's so much harder to get up after a big win than a big loss."

Culver, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, went to the locker room in pain early in the second half after his right elbow collided with Kansas State's Montavious Murphy. Culver returned to the game wearing a sleeve on his arm a short time later and completed his fifth double-double of the season.

"He's 6'11" and 250, he's a pretty big dude," West Virginia guard Chase Harler said. "He just goes for every rebound and having that mentality (that) you're going to get more than you miss."

Sean McNeil sank a pair of free throws to cap a 9-0 run that gave the Mountaineers their largest lead, 49-35, with nine minutes remaining. Kansas State got no closer than eight points after that.

Huggins used 11 players in the first three minutes of the game to try to find the right combination.

Culver, whose layup midway through the first half put West Virginia ahead to stay, went 8 of 15 from the floor. But he made just 3 of 9 free throws after going 14 of 16 from the line against Texas Tech.

David Sloan scored 13 points and Xavier Sneed added 11 for Kansas State (9-12, 2-6).

The teams combined for 44 fouls and 54 free throws. On Wednesday, West Virginia and Texas Tech combined for 50 fouls and 73 free throws.

"Their defense was much better than at our place obviously, but you know, credit to our guys," said Kansas State coach Bruce Weber. "We've made improvement. We've battled. I would like them to play a little sharper and crisp, but part of that is how West Virginia plays."

Kansas State has lost five straight games on the road. The Wildcats made 58% of their field goals in beating West Virginia 84-68 at home on Jan. 18 but shot 37% (18 of 49) on Saturday, including 3 of 17 3-point attempts.

West Virginia has allowed an average of 54 points in its last five home games, 14 points less than its last four road games.

"It wasn't a good shooting night for anybody, was it?" Huggins said. "We didn't shoot it. They didn't shoot it, and it makes it an ugly game. I don't mind ugly games as long as we win them."

Huggins spoke at a memorial service Friday in Cincinnati for former Bearcats player, assistant coach and long-time radio broadcaster Chuck Machock. A member of Cincinnati's Athletic Hall of Fame, Machock died Jan. 4 at 82.

Huggins told stories about Machock and referred to him as "my second dad" and my "best friend in the world."

West Virginia could drop a spot or two in the AP Top 25 after the loss at Texas Tech.

DURANT, Oklahoma – The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team split the scheduled doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday, winning the first game 16-3 and falling just short in the second, 2-1. 

The Bearcat offense, in both games, was led by the powerful bat of junior infielder Matt Gastner, who tallied three home runs on the day. In eight total at bats Saturday, Gastner notched seven RBI on five hits, scoring four runs and drawing a walk. 

Three different Bearcats homered during the two-game stint. 

Northwest (1-2) got off to a fast start, plating seven runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, senior first baseman Connor Quick slapped a single into center field, scoring Jacob Pinkerton from second and giving the Bearcats the early 1-0 advantage. Next up, Gastner stepped into the batter's box and saw the first of his three homers fly over the fence, bringing Quick across and increasing the lead to 3-0. The next RBI came from sophomore Jordan Peck, who doubled and scored junior Peter Carlson from second, moving the score to 4-0 in favor of Northwest. After the second out was gained by the Savage Storm defense, senior infielder Tim Olsen slammed his first home run ball of the 2020 season and added another three RBI to the stat sheet.

Southeastern Oklahoma State (2-1) answered with a run in the bottom of the second, coming off a one-out sacrifice fly. 

After a quiet third inning, the Bearcats continued to dominate at the plate. Successful small ball advanced Quick and senior infielder Calvin Rudolph around the base path, scoring the first two runs of the inning. With a runner on, Carlson connected with a two-run homer that brought the lead to 11-1 and gave Northwest it's largest lead of the contest. 

Not going away, the Savage Storm added another run in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score to 11-2. 

Following a stalemate in the fifth, the Bearcats went back to work on offense and plated two more. Quick and senior Matt Schingel scored for Northwest.

After holding the Southeastern Oklahoma State offense scoreless in the home half of the sixth, Gastner muscled a three-run shot to right field, scoring Quick and Rudolph and expanding the Bearcat edge to 16-3. 

On the mound, junior Max Spitzmiller got the start for Northwest. Spitzmiller tossed four full innings, allowing two runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out three and earning his first win of 2020. Fellow senior Ethan Griswold got the save, pitching the final three innings of play. Griswold also recorded three strike outs. 

Northwest scored 16 runs on 15 hits and had only one error in the Game One win. 

After a scoreless first by both squads, the Savage Storm jumped on the board first, scoring one run in the second inning and another in the third to take the 2-0 edge over the Bearcats. 

Junior pitcher Spencer Hanson received the start on the bump for Northwest and held Southeastern Oklahoma State scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. Hanson would go on to pitch six innings, allowing two runs (two earned) on five hits and striking out three.

Northwest Missouri State baseball splits at SE Oklahoma State

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Myles Dread scored 14 points, Lamar Stevens and Myreon Jones had 13 apiece, and No. 24 Penn State pulled away early in the second half on its way to a 76-64 win over struggling Nebraska on Saturday night.

Stevens became the third 2,000-point scorer in Penn State program history, and Mike Watkins had 11 points and a season-high 17 rebounds to pass John Amaechi as the Nittany Lions' career rebounds leader in Big Ten play.

Penn State (16-5, 6-4 Big Ten) won its fourth straight and won in Lincoln for the first time since Nebraska joined the conference in 2011-12.

The Cornhuskers (7-15, 2-9) lost their seventh in a row as season scoring leader Cam Mack was held without a point for the first time this season. Haanif Cheatham led the Huskers with 15 points, Thorir Thorbjarnarson added 12 and Dachon Burke had 11.

The Lions scored the first eight points of the second half to go up 46-33, with Watkins dunking a lob from Jones that led Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg to call a timeout.

The Huskers turned over the ball on three of their first five possessions after the half and didn't score until Burke converted a fast break. Watkins answered with a dunk putback, and the Lions' lead grew to 60-39 when Stevens dunked and hit a 3 to end a 22-6 run.

Stevens has 2,007 career points and ranks behind only Talor Battle (2,213 points from 2007-11) and Jesse Arnelle (2,138 from 1951-55) on the Lions' career scoring chart.

Former walk-on Charlie Easley made his first start, taking Mack's place in the lineup. Mack was held out the first five minutes for disciplinary reasons, picked up two quick fouls and never found any rhythm. His previous low was five points against South Florida in November.

After a quiet first inning, senior infielder Colton Buckner got the Savage Storm on the board first, hitting a solo home run to left-center field, giving Southeastern Oklahoma State the one-run advantage in the second.

The Bearcats evened the score at a run apiece in the fourth inning, following junior infielder Peter Carlson’s solo homer over the left field fence.

Southeastern Oklahoma State answered with five runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take the 8-1 lead. The Savage Storm notched four home runs during the contest.

The Savage Storm and Bearcats held one another scoreless through the final three innings.

MWSU kept it close throughout the contest, but the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference-favorites had the upper hand in the end as they won 4-2.

Friday's match was highlighted by Karolina Ström winning within the one spot, as well as Federica Salmaso winning her match at the two spot by a underhand serve.

On top of Friday's action, the Mid-Intercollegiate Athletic Conference released their preseason coaches poll for women's tennis. Missouri Western posted 21 points and placed eighth in the league. Central Oklahoma placed at the top of the poll with 63 points. Non-conference action will continue after Friday's matches and MIAA play for the Griffons will begin March 28 at Fort Hays State.

The Griffons will return to Genesis Health Club on Saturday to take on the Newman Jets at noon.

Griffons win at Central Oklahoma 83-74 for third straight victory

WICHITA, Kansas – The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcat men's basketball team topped the Newman University Jets on the road Thursday at Fugate Gymnasium, 98-69.

Northwest moves to 19-1 overall and 9-1 in MIAA play. Newman falls 8-13 overall and 2-10 in league action.

Northwest tied a season-high with 17 three-pointers in the victory. The Bearcats shot 64.7% from the field, including 65.4% from three-point range. Newman shot 58.1% from the field.

Northwest made its first seven three-point attempts and opened up a 30-19 lead less than nine minutes into the contest. Junior Ryan Hawkins made his first five shots from the floor, including a trio from three-point land. Hawkins finished with 36 points on 13-of-16 shooting from the floor. Hawkins drained 7-of-9 from three-point range. Hawkins added five steals.

The Bearcats continued to rain in three-pointers and hit on 81.3% of their first-half three-pointers by making 13-of-16 from distance. Hawkins poured in 28 first-half points as he went 10-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-7 from three-point distance. Sophomore Trevor Hudgins nearly had a double-double in the first half with nine points and assists. Hudgins would finish with 21 points and 11 assists.

Northwest buried 70% of its first-half shots (21-of-30). Newman shot 60% from the field (12-of-20) in the opening half and still trailed 59-32 at the break.

The Bearcats built their lead to 36 points in the second half and cruised to a 98-69 road triumph.

Sophomore Diego Bernard tallied 15 points and knocked in all three of his three-pointers.

Senior Ryan Welty collected a team-best six rebounds and sank three of his four three-point shots to tally nine points for the Bearcats.

Northwest will travel on Saturday to match up against the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos. Tip is set for 3:30 p.m. in Edmond, Oklahoma.

WICHITA, Kansas – The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcat men's basketball team topped the Newman University Jets on the road Thursday at Fugate Gymnasium, 98-69.Northwest moves to 19-1 overall and 9-1 in MIAA play. Newman falls 8-13 overall and 2-10 in league action.Northwest tied a season-high with 17 three-pointers in the victory. The Bearcats shot 64.7% from the field, including 65.4% from three-point range. Newman shot 58.1% from the field.Northwest made its first seven three-point attempts and opened up a 30-19 lead less than nine minutes into the contest. Junior Ryan Hawkins made his first five shots from the floor, including a trio from three-point land. Hawkins finished with 36 points on 13-of-16 shooting from the floor. Hawkins drained 7-of-9 from three-point range. Hawkins added five steals.The Bearcats continued to rain in three-pointers and hit on 81.3% of their first-half three-pointers by making 13-of-16 from distance. Hawkins poured in 28 first-half points as he went 10-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-7 from three-point distance. Sophomore Trevor Hudgins nearly had a double-double in the first half with nine points and assists. Hudgins would finish with 21 points and 11 assists.Northwest buried 70% of its first-half shots (21-of-30). EDMOND, Okla. – For the first time this season, the Missouri women's basketball team (14-5, 6-4) has suffered consecutive losses after a heartbreaking defeat at Central Oklahoma (15-5, 9-3) 70-69 Thursday. The Griffons used a 22-4 run in the final seven minutes of regulation to take a 69-68 lead, but UCO got the game-winning put-back layup off an errant 3-point attempt with seven seconds remaining.

Trailing 64-47 with 7:14 left, head coach Candi Whitaker switched the Griffons to a zone defense that forced six-straight stops and allowed just one Broncho field goal. MWSU fed off the defensive stops to go on a 10-0 run that brought MWSU within seven. UCO's only field goal against the Griffon zone stopped its scoreless streak, but needed four bounces to rattle in. More stops and more baskets led to a Chris Wilson layup with 12 seconds left that gave MWSU a 69-68 lead, its first since the first half.

The Griffons got off to a hot start in the game, making four of their first five shots, but UCO nearly equaled the MWSU offensive effort. Missouri Western's largest lead of the game came with 3:43 left in the first quarter by seven. Central Oklahoma used a 10-0 run between the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter to take a 22-19 lead and held the lead through the quarter to go to halftime up 32-27.

- MWSU outscored UCO 26-16 in the fourth quarter after getting outscored 22-16 in the third.

- The Griffons were limited to 23% shooting (3-13) in the second quarter after going 7 for 14 in the first.

Missouri Western women rally, but fall short at UCO 70-69

WICHITA, Kansas - The Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team defeated the Newman University Jets 70-67 in double-overtime.  This was Northwest's first double-overtime win since Jan. 25, 1984 when they defeated Central Missouri 112-102.

The Bearcats got the last look in the first OT but were unable to convert and the second overtime began with a score of 59-59. The Bearcats had five different players score in the second OT. One of the biggest buckets of 2OT was a three-pointer by Jaelyn Haggard to take a 67-65 lead with 0:56 left in the game. Kendey Eaton made two free throws to extend the lead to 69-65 and after a Newman bucket Mallory McConkey made one-of-two free throws to take a 70-67 lead. The Jets got a contested look to tie but could not get it to fall and Haggard sealed the game with a rebound. Haggard had 12 points on the night, on four made three-pointers. With those four made threes, Haggard moves into second in Northwest history in three-point field goals made with 172. She passed Shelly Martin (2008-10) for second with 170, and sits 30 behind leader Kelli Nelson (2005-08) with 202. McConkey led Northwest in scoring with 13 points, and Kendey Eaton added 10 points in limited action, in her first game returning from injury. McConkey led the team in rebounds with eight and assists with four. The Bearcats were able to outscore the Jets 20-13 off of turnovers and 30-24 in the paint. Potter had 20 points for the Jets to lead all scorers, and added seven rebounds. Newman shot 42.1% from the field and outrebounded Northwest 40-32. Northwest will be back in action on the road Saturday against Central Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m. --- Northwest Athletics ---
