JOSEPH – For the first time in 17 years, the Missouri Western men's basketball team (12-11, 8-4) has won five consecutive MIAA games with an 81-71 victory over Lincoln (8-13, 5-7) Wednesday night. The Griffons improved to 8-0 in the MWSU Fieldhouse, matched last season's win total and their 8-4 conference record is the best for the program since 2010.

It looked to be a tight contest at first with five lead changes and four ties early in the first half. Lincoln led 22-21 with 10:22 left in the first before the Griffons went on a 7-1 run and never allowed the Blue Tigers to regain the lead. Lincoln tied the game at 28 before MWSU went on a 14-3 run to build an 11-point lead and eventually take a 45-35 lead to the break. Both teams scored 36 second half points, but MWSU limited Lincoln to 29% shooting in the half.

The win avenged an 89-66 loss at Lincoln earlier this season and was Missouri Western's first home win against the Blue Tigers since 2016.

- Led by JaRon Thames' team-high 21 points, the Griffon bench contributed 38 of Missouri Western's points, outscoring the Lincoln bench by 28.

- Thames was 8 of 12 from the field and recorded his fifth straight double digit scoring effort.

- Missouri Western shot 51.7% (15-29) from the field in the first half and went 6 of 12 from 3-point range before the break.

- It was the fifth straight game the Griffons were even or plus on assist to turnover ratio with 12 each.

- Will Eames shot 4 of 7 from the field for 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds after leaving the Newman game with an injury.

Griffons defeat Lincoln 81-71 for fifth straight victory

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western women's basketball team (16-5, 8-4) jumped out to a 15-0 lead on Lincoln (3-18, 0-12) and cruised to a 72-53 victory Wednesday night in the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Missouri Western scored on 11 of its 16 first quarter possessions to build a 26-9 lead after one quarter. The Griffons shot 58.8% in the quarter while holding Lincoln to 30% shooting. MWSU was cooled the rest of the game, but still managed to shoot 46.8% on the night.

- The Griffons moved to 10-1 in the MWSU Fieldhouse, avenging their first home loss of the season, nearly two weeks ago.

- All five Griffon starters scored in double figures.

- Missouri Western needed just two points on 1 of 12 shooting from its bench to handle the Blue Tigers.

- Chris Wilson led the Griffons with 17 points on 8 of 12 shooting with nine rebounds.

Western women use fast start to roll past Blue Tigers 72-53

Northwest Missouri State junior outfielder/designated hitter Matt Gastner (Liberty, Missouri) has been named the MIAA's baseball hitter of the week for the opening week of the 2020 season.

Gastner batted .438 with three home runs and 11 RBI as the Bearcats split a four-game set with the Savage Storm. Gastner completed the four-game set with a 1.062 slugging percentage.

Gastner went 4-for-4 with two homers and six RBI in Saturday's 16-3 Bearcat victory. In the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, Gastner hit his third home run of the series. Bearcats' Gastner earns MIAA Hitter of the Week honor

ST. JOSEPH - Missouri Western State University head football coach Matt Williamson and his staff announced the program's 2020 recruiting class on Wednesday. Fifty-five future Griffs signed their national letter of intent Wednesday to become members of the 2020 Griffon Football team.

Williamson and his staff inked a recruiting class that features a great deal of size and regional influence. Coming off a 9-3 season and back-to-back Agent Barry Live United Bowl Championships, the coaches went well beyond the borders of the Show-Me state to bolster the 2020 roster.

"This is hands down our best class yet," Williamson said. "We took care of all our team needs, and we assembled a whole separate team within this recruiting class. We landed some high caliber athletes and quite a few are turning down Division 1 FCS offers to come play for the Griffons. We also expanded into 14 different states to land our recruits this year.

"Our coaching staff did a phenomenal job on the recruiting trail. We loaded up with a lot of skill players, which was one of our main focuses. Our staff outworked everyone and we will continue to do the same every year. Many successful years to come for Missouri Western Football with this 2020 class!"

Missouri on Tuesday scored 18 first-half points -- its season low in a half -- in falling behind by seven at the break.A&amp;M led 18-14 with five minutes remaining in the first half before finishing the half with a flourish -- at least compared with both teams' poor shooting over the first 15 minutes. A&amp;M guard Wendell Mitchell smoothly drained a 3-pointer from the left corner and was fouled on the play with 3:15 to go before halftime.Mitchell missed the resulting free throw, but the Aggies grabbed the offensive rebound, and drained more time off the clock. A&amp;M added a dunk by Andre Gordon and a layup by Savion Flagg in the final 1:37 to grab a 25-18 lead at the break.Four minutes into the second half, Missouri closed to 30-29 with 16:05 left, before the Aggies outscored the Tigers 13-2 in a little more than four-minute span.
