Missouri Western State University President Matt Wilson says despite widespread reports that the Kansas City Chiefs will not be in St. Joseph for training camp, the university hasn’t heard that officially from the Super Bowl champs.
Wilson says he understands the NFL has taken a stance that all teams should hold their training camps in their home facilities.
“We have not received official word,” Wilson tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “And so, we continue to move forward. We continue to plan going forward. We’re talking to the Chiefs on a daily basis. It may be that due to league policy or league edict, that the Chiefs, if they’re going to have a training camp, need to stay in their home.”
The Chiefs had just renewed the team’s contract with Missouri Western to continue to hold training camp on the St. Joseph campus. Training camp last year drew record crowds from the 10 years the Chiefs had started their season in St. Joseph. That record likely would have fallen this year with the Chiefs coming off their Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers, the club’s first championship in 50 years.
