MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Missouri Western baseball team finished off their four-game series at Southern Arkansas Sunday as they lost to the Muleriders 12-9.  The Griffons were swept over the weekend as they fall to 1-6 this season and SAU improves to 8-0.

The Griffons started game four strong, amassing seven runs through the sixth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Unfortunately, in the eighth inning, the Muleriders' bats woke up, scoring eight runs in the next two innings to take the lead and win the contest.

Brian Tan took Sunday's loss for the Griffons from the mound. Although Tan struck out eight batters, the Junior gave up seven hits and allowed seven runs, including a home run in the seventh inning. Tan also was also the only pitcher who recorded strikeouts for the Griffons during Sunday's action.

- The Griffons tallied nine runs from thirteen hits. Ben Tsui tallied three of those hits, including a solo home run in the fourth while he drove in three RBI's on the day.

- Josh Robinson accounted for three runs and two hits for Missouri Western in game four. Robinson led the series for the Griffons in runs as he tallied eight.

- Andrew Meier had five put outs while playing first base in game four. Meier also led the team in hits for the series with 13.

- Colby Tam also recorded five assists from the field at second base.

Missouri Western will travel to Joplin, Missouri to compete in the MIAA/GLVC Crossover starting on Thursday against Missouri-St. Louis.

MWSU baseball loses series finale at Southern Arkansas 12-9

ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas - The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team capped a perfect weekend in Arkansas with a 9-2 triumph over Oklahoma Baptist.

The Bearcats extended their win streak to four in a row. Northwest (5-2) emerged undefeated from the three-day weekend stint, tallying wins against Henderson State, Ouachita Baptist and Oklahoma Baptist.

Bearcat starter junior Spencer Hanson struck out 11 in seven innings worked and allowed only two runs in earning his first win at Northwest.

The Bearcat offense came alive in the home half of the first Sunday, notching three runs and taking a two-run advantage over the Bison, 3-1. Senior first baseman Connor Quick notched a two-RBI double to right , scoring junior Jacob Pinkerton and senior Calvin Rudolph. After dropping the first out of the inning, sophomore outfielder Ryan Koski hit a deep, sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Quick across the plate.

Following a quiet second inning from both squads, Northwest went back to work in the batter's box, scoring five additional runs and extending its advantage to 8-1. With juniors Peter Carlson and Matt Gastner on base, sophomore Jordan Peck slapped a double to right-center field scoring Gastner and moving Carlson to third. Up next, Koski earned his second RBI of the afternoon, grounding out to second base and driving in Carlson from third. Keeping the runs coming, redshirt freshman Caden Diel drove in Peck from third on an infield groundout. With two outs and two men on, Rudolph notched a two-RBI double to left d, scoring Pinkerton and junior outfielder Donavon Warren for the fourth and fifth runs of the inning.

Oklahoma Baptist cut into the Northwest lead in the top of the fourth, scoring a run of its own and bringing the Bearcat advantage to 8-2.

The Bearcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning off a wild pitch and an error that allowed Diel to score and up the score to 9-2 over the Bison.

Northwest's defensive play kept Oklahoma Baptist off the scoreboard during the final five innings of play, earning its fifth win of the 2020 season and improving the overall record to 5-2. The Bison has the bases loaded in the ninth, but failed to capitalize.

On the mound, Hanson got the start for the Bearcats, dealing seven innings. In 29 batters faced, Hanson allowed just two runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out a team-best 11 Bison batters and earning his first win of the 2020 season. Junior Jonathan McIntyre and sophomore Alex Slocum also made appearances. The three combined to record 15 strikeouts.

Northwest will be back in action Feb. 13-16 as it competes in the annual MIAA/GLVC Challenge. The Bearcats will open the four-game stint squaring off against Maryville University Thurs., Feb. 13 with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

Bearcat baseball defeats OBU to cap off undefeated weekend

MANKATO, Minnesota – The Northwest Missouri State University softball team finished the Minnesota State D-II Softball Classic Sunday with an 8-2 loss to Concordia-St. Paul.

Concordia-St. Paul scored five runs in the top of the first.

The Golden Bears added another run in the top of the second to push the lead to 6-0.

The Bearcats answered in the bottom of the second inning when Olivia Daugherty reached base on an error by the Golden Bears' shortstop allowing Alexis Kump to score and cut the lead, 6-1.

Concordia-St. Paul scored single runs in the third and seventh innings to push the lead to 8-1 over the Bearcats.

In the bottom of the seventh, Sydne Brashear ripped a double to left field. Shortly after, Erin Keeney singled to right bringing in Brashear. However, the seventh inning efforts weren't enough for the Bearcats to catch up to the Golden Bears' 8-2 lead.

The Bearcats move to 2-3 on the season and will be on the road again next weekend in Monticello, Arkansas for the Alva Early Classic.

The Griffons led for 33 minutes by as many as 16 points, but saw a tough UCM team make things interesting in the closing minute. With 11 seconds left, Will Eames missed the backend of a one-and-one at the free throw line that would have put MWSU up by five. The Mules answered with a quick layup to cut the lead to two before the Griffons turned it over on the ensuing inbounds pass. Eames then stole UCM's inbound, was quickly fouled and made his two free throws to secure the win for the Griffons.

Missouri Western's win and Rogers State's loss to Northeastern State left the Griffons just a half game behind Rogers State for third place in the MIAA standings with a tiebreaker via Missouri Western's win against the Hillcats earlier in the season. It also helped the Griffons match the 2002-03 MWSU team that won six-straight MIAA games.

- Reese Glover tied Jonathan Phelps' MWSU single-game 3-point record with eight long range makes. The freshman went 8 for 12 from 3-point range and led all scorers with a career-high 26 points.

- Missouri Western shot 63% from the field in the first half, including 52.6% from 3-point range, going 19 for 19 beyond the arc to take a 14-point lead to halftime.

Griffons hold off UCM 84-80 for sixth straight victory

MARYVILLE, Missouri - The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats rode the scoring efforts of Trevor Hudgins and Ryan Hawkins to a 96-49 triumph over the visiting Lincoln Blue Tigers on Saturday at Bearcat Arena.

Hudgins scored a career-high 36 points as he drained 7-of-10 from three-point, while Hawkins netted 23 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore Diego Bernard also registered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Northwest (22-1 overall, 12-1 MIAA) won for the 30th straight time in Bearcat Arena. It also marked the 11th straight victory over the Blue Tigers in the series. Lincoln falls to 8-14 overall and 5-8 in MIAA play.

The Bearcat three-point eruption began following an 8-8 deadlock through the game's first six minutes. Hudgins hit his first triple with 13:17 to play and Hawkins followed with his first from distance with 12:38 on the clock in the first half. Northwest would go on to make 6-of-9 three-pointers in the first half with Hudgins leading the way by making all five his triple attempts. The Bearcats led 48-28 at the break.

It took only three minutes into the second half to turn it into a 30-point bulge as Hawkins attacked the hoop for nine of Northwest's 12 points that gave the home squad a 60-30 lead. Hudgins continued to dazzle as well and he helped put one of the toppers on the victory with a four-point play with 12:15 to play in the contest. Wes Dreamer's three-pointer with 9:34 to play pushed the lead to 82-41. Dreamer's three-pointer capped a start to the second half that saw the Bearcats made seven of their first 11 three-point shots.

No. 1 Bearcats dominate Blue Tigers Saturday 96-49

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western women's basketball team (17-5, 9-4) trailed No. 18 Central Missouri (18-4, 12-1) 2-0, 22 seconds into Saturday's game. They never trailed again. Missouri Western used a 19-0 run and went on to end the Jennies 15-game winning streak 67-57.

Missouri Western handed Central Missouri its first MIAA loss of the season and its first since Feb. 9 of last year. It also snapped a streak of seven straight MWSU losses to the Jennies. The win with Newman's loss on Saturday clinched the team's spot in the MIAA Women's Basketball Championships to be held March 4-8 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri.

All five Griffons starters scored in double figures with Corbyn Cunningham and Chris Wilson both turning in double-doubles. The Griffons shot 53% from the field in the first quarter with UCM going 2 of 9 for 22%. The third quarter wasn't much different, where MWSU shot 46% while limiting the Jennies to 28% shooting.

- The win was the second this season for MWSU over a ranked opponent after defeating then No. 10 Fort Hays 60-57 on Jan. 23.

- Missouri Western led for 38:56 of the game, leading by as many as 20 points with two different 18-point leads.

- The Griffons outscored the Jennies by 10 in the paint and had 17 second chance points to the Jennies' nine.

The Bearcats shot poorly from the field but played stellar defense on the game to get the win. The Bearcats were able to take advantage of Blue Tiger turnovers, outscoring them off turnovers 11-2.&nbsp; Jaelyn Haggard continued her streak of making four threes for her fourth straight game. She added four more points to lead all scorers with 16 points. Paityn Rau added 12 points on only seven shots and Mallory McConkey was also in double digits with 10 points. McConkey and Erika Schlosser led the Bearcats with five rebounds. Schlosser also led the Bearcats with three assists. Natasha Dolinsky and Vivian Chigbu led Lincoln in scoring with 12 points each. Alecia Gulledge led the Blue Tigers in rebounds with nine, and Dolinksy led them three assists. Northwest Missouri State women roll past Lincoln 59-45

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Missouri Western Baseball team (1-5) lost both games of their doubleheader Saturday at Southern Arkansas (7-0, 1-0 and 7-2.

SAU's Zach Smith held the Griffs to four hits and struck out seven batters in eight innings. Smith walked away with the win in game one 1-0.

In game two, the Muleriders topped the Griffons 7-2. SAU's Parker Abrego pitched the entire game, striking out six batters and allowing six hits. Through four innings, Southern Arkansas scored six runs. Griffon baseball drops both games of DH at Southern Arkansas

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Plan A for Xavier Pinson was to drive the ball to the basket. That was the only plan Pinson needed as he scored a career-high 24 points to lead Missouri to an 83-79 overtime victory over Arkansas on Saturday.

"If they stopped it, I guess I would have tried Plan B," he said.

Pinson repeatedly drew contact and made his way to the free-throw line, where he hit 12 of 13 foul shots. Actually both teams spent most of the day at the line, combining for 83 free throws, but the Tigers (11-12, 3-7 Southeastern Conference) had Pinson on their side in overtime. He scored seven points in the extra period.

"It's having that killer mentality -- I would say Mamba mentality -- not being scared of anybody or anything," Pinson said of his mind-set.

Javon Pickett scored 14 points, Reed Nikko added 11 points and 11 rebounds and Dru Smith finished with 11 points and four steals for the Tigers. Missouri piled up a 52-35 edge in rebounds.

Reggie Chaney had a career-high 17 points and 11 rebounds for Arkansas (16-7, 4-6). Mason Jones scored 17, and Jimmy Whitt Jr. added 15. Chaney and Jones both fouled out in overtime.

"You're not going to win a game where you put an opponent on the foul line 44 times," Arkansas coach Eric Musselman said. "We could have played the Milwaukee Bucks tonight and we wouldn't have fouled them 44 times. We've got to learn to defend without fouling, and it starts with being in a defensive stance."

Missouri led 36-30 at halftime. The Razorbacks took the lead with six minutes left in the second half as Whitt began driving to the basket at will. He made 3 of 4 free throws and a short bank shot on three straight possessions.

The game went back-and-forth for the rest of regulation. It swung to Missouri early in overtime when Jones fouled out on a charge and then Pinson drove to the basket for a layup, drew a foul and hit the free throw on the other end to give the Tigers a 73-69 lead.

"I'm happy he had 24 points, but I'm not surprised," Missouri coach Cuonzo Martin said of Pinson. "He just did what he was supposed to do."

Missouri freshman forward Tray Jackson made a case for more playing time by scoring nine points on 4-of-5 shooting. In one key sequence late in regulation, he blocked a shot and then sprinted to other end and followed a missed shot with a dunk to give the Tigers the lead.

"The thing that will make Tray Jackson a great basketball player is he doesn't have a lot flowing through his ears," Martin said. "There's not a lot of people giving him advice. That will make him great. I think he's a talented player. He's athletic, strong, all those things. When you don't see him out there, the biggest reason outside of growth and understanding is he has to improve his conditioning."

On a team that's starved for offense, Jackson has shown the ability to get to the basket and score, but he has averaged less than eight minutes a game and didn't play at all in four games.

"Of course you want to show coaches you can do things, but that's not my mind-set when I step out there," Jackson said. "It's more of doing whatever I can to help my guys win."

The well-travelled Whitt played his second college game in his hometown. As a freshman at Arkansas, he scored 15 points against Missouri in 2016. Then he transferred to SMU. He returned to Arkansas this season as a graduate transfer and again scored 15 against the Tigers.

Whitt has been battling a sore back and didn't score in the previous game against Auburn. He averages 14.7 points.

"He's a stabilizer for us," Musselman said. "He's a good defender. He can score for us. He's just a unique player because he plays that point guard position but scores so well around the rim and midrange."

Missouri: It was the fifth-annual Rally for Rhyan game at Mizzou Arena. The game honors Rhyan Loos, the daughter of former Missouri assistant coach and current athletic administrator Brad Loos, and raises money for pediatric cancer research. Rhyan has been cancer-free for more than three years. Missouri is 5-0 in Rally for Rhyan games.

Arkansas: The Razorbacks entered the day projected as a No. 9 seed in the latest mock NCAA Tournament bracket by ESPN's Joe Lunardi, but they have been trending the wrong way. Arkansas has lost five of its last seven. If the Razorbacks don't make the tournament, they might look back with regret on consecutive overtime losses to Auburn and Missouri.

Pinson leads Missouri to 83-79 win over Arkansas in OT

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team improved to 4-2 on the season with a 9-7 triumph at Ouachita Baptist on Saturday.

The Bearcats trailed 6-5 going into the ninth inning but rallied to score four in their last at bat. The Bearcats gave up a single run in the ninth and closed out the 9-7 triumph.

Bearcat baseball takes down Ouachita Baptist 9-7

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Bill Self got a basketball marking his 700th career victory, and Kansas matched an NCAA record with its 31st consecutive 20-win season after a powerful performance by 7-footer Udoka Azubuike.

"Amazing," point guard Devon Dotson said of Azubuike. "He worked hard to get his spots down low, and when he did, he converted. He was dominant, finished around the basket ... he was great."

Azubuike had 20 points and 15 rebounds for his 10th double-double this season, and the Jayhawks beat TCU 60-46 on Saturday. He had five dunks in an early 13-3 run that put them ahead to stay.

"The way they defended us, it was a perfect day for Dok to have a big game," Self said. "If we could just throw in the ball more often, I think he could have had a huge game. That was our best offense, just throw the ball to Dok."

As for becoming the second-youngest coach to reach 700 wins, Self said it was special to be able to mark the occasion by taking pictures with his granddaughter.

On joining joined North Carolina (1971-2001) as the only teams to win 20 games in 31 consecutive seasons, Self called the program's consistency "pretty remarkable" but said that 20-game seasons don't mean as much as they did back in the 1980s when fewer games were played.

"I know he's not content. He's going to keep going as he should," guard Devon Dotson said.

Dotson had 18 points and 11 assists for the Jayhawks (20-3, 9-1 Big 12, who have actually won at least 23 games each of the past 30 seasons since a 19-win season in Roy Williams' first season as their coach.

Desmond Bane had 20 points for TCU (13-10, 4-6, which has lost five in a row.

"Stay together. Stay positive. We've lost to all good teams," Bane, a senior, said about what the young Frogs need to do. "A lot of players haven't been through this, haven't hit true adversity like this in high school or at another level. Stick together is the message and I feel like we're doing that.

RJ Nembhard had 11 points and PJ Fuller 10. Kevin Samuel was scoreless but had 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Nembhard got the Frogs to within 44-40 with seven minutes left on a 3-pointer that capped a 10-2 run. That spurt included Nembhard's ally-oop pass to Fuller for a flying layup after Dotson's bad pass.

But Kansas scored 12 in a row after that, seven by Dotson.

"When they cut it to 44-40 with the ball, we locked in and guarded then," Self said. "And that was, to me, the biggest difference in the game."

Self got his 700th win six weeks after his 57th birthday. The only coach to reach that mark sooner was Bobby Knight at age 56.

Self is 700-214 in 27 seasons overall, including his time at Oral Roberts (1993-97, Tulsa (1997-2000) and Illinois (2000-03). He is 493-109 in his 17th season with the Jayhawks.

No. 3 Kansas gets 20th win 60-46 over TCU, No. 700 for Self

Maryville, Mo. – Missouri Western junior Hanna Williams broke her own school record and won the 600-meter run for the second time this season on Saturday as the Griffon track &amp; field teams competed at the Bearcats Invitational.  MWSU had 11 top 10 finishes, along with multiple personal bests.

-Not only did Williams break the program record in the 600, but she also broke the fieldhouse record with a time of 1:24.89 meaning she is the fastest woman to ever run the event in Hughes Fieldhouse.

- Aniya Kollore placed in the top-five of the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 25.63. Kollore also set a personal-best in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.98.

- The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Aniyah Mance-Edwards, Hanna Williams, 

Lynzi Miller and Symonne Holland placed fourth in the event with a time of 3:55.71.

- Bailey Gilbert placed sixth in the women's high jump with a height of 1.56 meters. Gilbert also placed top-five in the triple jump with 11.51 meters.

- Grace Langford broke top-10 in the weight throw with 15.13 meters.

- Lynzi Miller hit top-10 in the long jump with a distance of 5.32 meters.

Kansas State falls at Iowa State Saturday 73-63

MANKATO, Minnesota – The Northwest Missouri State University softball team dropped a 7-0 decision to Minnesota State Saturday.

The Mavericks' pitcher Mackenzie Ward shut out the Bearcats only allowing three hits in seven innings.

The Bearcats move to 2-2 on the season so far and will face Concordia-St. Paul Sunday at 11:30 a.m. to finish the Minnesota State D-II Softball Classic.

Northwest softball loses at Minnesota State Saturday

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Joe Wieskamp averaged 30 points per game in his final two high school seasons. Getting to that number in a game in college was something the Iowa sophomore guard hadn't done in his career.

Which is why teammate Luka Garza said he was pushing him to get there on Saturday.

Wieskamp did, scoring a career-high 30 points in the 17th-ranked Hawkeyes' 96-72 win over Nebraska.

Garza added 22 to help the Hawkeyes (17-7, 8-5 Big Ten) bounce back from their worst loss of the season.

"My teammates, Luka and all of those guys, did a great job of finding me," said Wieskamp, who was 10 of 15 from the field. "They just encouraged me to keep shooting."

Wieskamp, whose previous career high was 26 in the 67-49 win over Maryland on Jan. 10, scored 21 against the Huskers in a 76-70 loss earlier this season, but it didn't feel that way on a night he made just 1 of 10 3-point attempts.

"Everyone was focusing on how he didn't make threes," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said, noting how Wieskamp attacked the basket in that game.

It was something Wieskamp did in the repeat matchup against the Huskers.

"He's a guy that will just keep coming at you," McCaffery said.

"Wieskamp was incredible," Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said. We did not do a good job of closing out to him, he got around us, got confident."

Garza and Wieskamp came into the game averaging a combined 38 points per game, the sixth-best scoring duo in NCAA Division I play. This was the ninth consecutive Big Ten game of 20 or more points for Garza, who leads the conference in scoring.

Iowa was coming off a 104-68 loss at Purdue on Wednesday, and guard CJ Fredrick said during Friday's media availability that the Hawkeyes were "embarrassed" after that defeat.

They responded against the Huskers (7-16, 2-10).

"The last two days, we've been itching to get out on the court and take it out on someone else," Fredrick said.

"We really wanted to come out and make a statement tonight," Wieskamp said.

Iowa, which made just 4 of 33 3-point attempts in a 76-70 loss to the Huskers on Jan. 7, made three 3-pointers in the opening 4 1/2 minutes on the way to an early 21-5 lead. But the Hawkeyes missed their next 11 shots, going scoreless for almost eight minutes. The Huskers couldn't capitalize, though, and Iowa led 41-30 at halftime after Fredrick hit an off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Hawkeyes opened the second half with a 25-8 run to put the game away.

"We really hit them in the mouth with a big run, to kind of separate the game," Wieskamp said. "I think that was huge for us."

Jervay Green led Nebraska with 18 points. Cam Mack had 13 points, and Dachon Burke added 12.

The loss at Purdue on Wednesday could knock the Hawkeyes down a few spots, but they should stay in the rankings with this win.

Iowa: The Hawkeyes kept pace with Big Ten leader Maryland, staying two games back while moving into a tie with Michigan State for fourth place.

Nebraska: It was the eighth consecutive loss for the Huskers, who play Maryland, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Illinois in its next four games.

Iowa: The Hawkeyes play at Indiana on Thursday.

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Missouri Western Baseball travelled to Southern Arkansas on Friday to take on the Muleriders in the start of a four-game series. The Griffons (1-3) fell in game one losing to SAU (5-0) 7-0.

The Griffons and Muleriders met on Friday for the fourth time since 2013, but MWSU is still looking for that first victory against SAU following Friday's action. Southern Arkansas was also receiving votes from Collegiate Baseball's Top-25 poll headed into the series.

- Andrew Meier only allowed four hits in four innings, facing 15 at-bats while he was in the game.

- MWSU pitchers recorded six strikeouts throughout the day as well as five walks.

- The Griffons also recorded five hits throughout the contest.

- Gustavo Gonzales recorded a double for the Griffons, recording his second straight game with a hit.

The Griffons will return to Magnolia, Arkansas to take on SAU for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
