Timothy “Tim” Wendt, 52, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Monday, September 18, 2023.

Tim was born on January 24, 1971, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Lewis and Shirley (Vessar) Wendt.

He attended Troy High School. Tim worked for Mid Cities Trucking Company, where he considered them all family, he also worked for BMS. Tim was an avid sports fan, being part of the recreation board. He was an active announcer for all events and kept all stats for the teams. Tim enjoyed playing cards with his dad and friends, hunting and fishing with his boys, riding his SXS, hanging out with his friends and nephews.

Tim married Jenny McVey on October 24, 1992, in Elwood, Kansas. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, niece, Malorie Adkins, and a nephew, Kyle “Whitey” Smith.

Additional survivors: Britain Wendt (Erin), Cade Wendt (Berkeley) and Jase Wendt. Grandchild, Bristol Wendt, Parents, Lewis and Shirley Wendt, brothers, Lewis Jr. “Butch” (Lauren) Wendt and Dennis Wendt (Diane), sister, Kim (Lloyd) Smith. Mother and father-in-law, Clinton and Joanne McVey, sisters-in-law, Natalie (Bryan) Adkins, and Brenda (Rob) Karn, brother-in-law, Rodney McVey, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, too many friends to count and his dog, Riggs.

John Vernon Trower, Jr., 79, of Atchison, KS, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at Mosaic Life Care, St. Joseph, MO. 

Funeral service will be 3:00 PM Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Russ Cooper officiating.

Johnny, Jr. was born January 5, 1944, in Atchison, KS, the son of John V. Sr., and “Bonnie” Geraldine (Hatchell) Trower. He worked for Conagra in the maintenance department for forty years. Johnny was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served on the Finance Committee and participated in bible study and Senior Adults Learning Together (SALT). He enjoyed trains, traveling, riding motorcycles, hunting, watching John Wayne movies and the Kansas City Chiefs. 

Johnny married Mary Guatney on July 1, 1963, in Manhattan, KS; she survives of the home. He is also survived by a son, Travis Trower, Atchison, KS, two daughters, Sonja Betts, Atchison, KS, Alyssa Wallace, Stillwater, OK, a brother, Tim Trower, Atchison, KS, a sister, Melody Moon, Halstead, KS, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren, special caretakers, Travis Trower, Joe and Susan McCoole and Megan and David Rapson. 

He was preceded by his parents, a son, Vernon Trower an organ donor which saved several lives, a brother, Dean Trower, and sisters, Karen Jantz, Julie Elias and Sheila Trower.

John Vernon 'Johnny' Trower Jr. 1944 - 2023

Clarence Edmond Lankford entered this life on Sunday, October 17, 1954. He departed his earthly tabernacle at 68 years of age on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

Clarence was the third son born to the union of Leo Lankford Jr. and Lois Stewart Lankford. Named after his Maternal Grandfather and Maternal Great-Grand Father - Clearance from the Latin meaning clear and Edmond for the English a protector. Clarence received his formal education through the St Joseph School District.

Clarence had numerous jobs and was the primary caregiver for numerous family members. His favorite position was working with his great nephew, Julian, on Uncle J's Fish and Wings Food Truck.

His destination was clear from the beginning that he would take up the mantle of his paternal Uncle Ad and become the protector. He filled the shoes and performed the position's duties without regret. As time progressed and the family increased; again, it was made clear he assumed the additional protector role for his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. This he did with great joy, pride, and above all, with love up until the end.

Clarence, aka Papa, Gukkie, Guk, "Hey" Cuz, Uncle C, was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Lankford Jr and Lois Lankford-Hill, his stepfather Robert L. Hill, and both maternal and paternal grandparents, as well as a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and citizens of the Village.

Those here to tell his story include brothers, Leo Lankford, III, Louis Lankford, Samuel Scott Lankford; sister, Kathy Davis, and numerous cousins, family members and both new and life-time friends. And not to be forgotten - his friend to the end - his beloved pet Zulu.

Linda Kay French, 72, passed peacefully in her sleep at home, joining her Lord, on Friday, September 15th, 2023.

Linda was born on May 11, 1951, in Kansas City, Kansas. At eight, her family moved to Toledo, OH. She finished high school in Toledo and then went to Bowling Green University in Ohio. She was a member and President of the Beta Sigma Phi chapter at the university. In 1973, Linda moved to the Washington DC area to take a job with the FBI. She married her true love and life companion, David (Wayne) French, in 1984 in Springfield, VA and spent 39 years accompanying him on his military career and political adventures. Linda and David loved to travel and to explore new places. Their passion was finding great wines and wineries around the world and in the United States. Together they visited 44 States and 18 countries.

Linda spent her life in many interesting jobs as a bank teller in Toledo, Ohio (5th/3th Bank) and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (Army National Bank); FBI file clerk in Washington DC; police officer in Fairfax County, VA; police dispatcher in Fairfax; police substation front desk clerk in Fairfax; supporting the Army Community Service as volunteer supervisor in Italy and Germany; vehicle registration front desk receptionist in Germany; real estate secretary for broker at Century 21 in Leavenworth; real estate agent for ERA in Leavenworth; real estate agent assistant with Coldwell Banker in Leavenworth; travel agent/office manager for both leisure and commercial travel at Leavenworth Travel Agency; travel agent for leisure travel clients with Shelton Travel Agency on the Plaza, KCMO; and travel coordinator for the Super Fund Division of the EPA (Region 7). She was President of the Woodland Hills Homeowners Association for four years. She was a member of the Lansing American Legion Post 411 Auxiliary. She was a graduate of the Lansing Citizens Academy and the Leavenworth County Sherriff’s Academy.

Linda’s favorite hobby was singing. She sang in church and community choirs (one with an Italian choir in Italy) her whole life. However, the hobby turned into a vocation when in 1995 she joined Sweet Adelines International, an international organization of women barbershop singers, as a member of a small chorus in Germany. On returning to the United State, Linda joined the Kansas City Chorus of Sweet Adelines. This chorus, with over 120 women, was a top ten chorus of Sweet Adelines choruses in the world. Linda was in the Kansas City Chorus for 18 years and competed on the international stage seven times placing in the top five on five of those appearances. As well as singing in the Sweet Adeline choruses, Linda sang in five different quartets in regional competitions. She sang in many more pick-up quartets for special events. She finally had to give up competing in Sweet Adelines when her health would not allow her to give the 100 percent she wanted to give.

Linda jumped into the political arena late in her life but became an avid activist in local politics. She was Campaign Treasurer for four Kansas State Representatives and one Lansing School Board member. She had been the Republican Precinct Committeewoman for Lansing Ward 4 until this year. She served as the Vice President and current President of the Leavenworth County Republican Women. She was an active supporter of her husband in his two terms in the Kansas Legislature as State Representative for the Kansas House 40th District (Lansing and Leavenworth).&nbsp;

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Donald W. Anthony and Majorie (Lifsey) Anthony in Toledo, Ohio. She is survived by her husband in Lansing, Kansas and a brother, Donald B. Anthony, in North Vencie, Florida. She has a stepdaughter, Ginger Denise Lucus, and a step grandson, Alex Beard, both in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Linda French will be buried at the Leavenworth Veterans Administration in the National Cemetery, Friday, September 29th,2023 at 12:30 PM following a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church in Leavenworth. It will be a closed casket service at the church. A friends and family viewing is scheduled at Davis Funeral Chapel from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 28, 2023. There will be a Celebration of Linda’s Life reception from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM following a graveside service at the cemetery on September 29, 2023.

Elizabeth "Ann" Whaley, age 91, passed away peacefully at Vintage Park Assisted Living Facility in Baldwin, Kansas on September 18th. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Leland Whaley, her parents, Charles and Lillian Field, and an infant brother. Ann was a resident of Baldwin for 57 years. She was raised in Hiawatha, Kansas,  and moved to Montana with her parents as a teenager. She was a talented seamstress, and she worked for several years at the Baldwin Ledger.  She was also  employed at Sears and Roebuck. Ann was a devoted wife and mother. She was a proud supporter of her husband's military, civil service, and political career. She enjoyed annual trips with her husband to Florida to spend time with family and friends. She was a strong, feisty, and determined woman. 

Ann is survived by a daughter, Karla and David Grosdidier of Eudora, and two sons, Mark Whaley and Christy Lund of Baldwin, Darren and Paulette Whaley of Avondale, Pennsylvania. Ann was also survived by seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. 

She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, Kansas, on September 20th at 10:30am with Cheryl Mishler officiating.  Interment will follow at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha.

Charles Wayne Gillespie, 91, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 17,2023. &nbsp;He was born August 18, 1932 to the late Ernest and Lola Gillespie in Ridgeway, Missouri. 

On October 23, 1960, he married Edna Boyer. &nbsp;Charles served in the United States Air Force. He was a hard working man who provided well for his family. He was self-employed and operated Charlie's Service Station at 22nd and Messanie Streets until 1996 at which time he retired. &nbsp;Upon retirement, he enjoyed helping his buddy Gary Westcott at Hurd Auctions. 

Charles is preceded in death by his wife Edna, two sons, Steve and Gary Boyer, his parents, five brothers, and two sisters. 

He is survived by his daughter Tammy Hogan (Jay), sons Jerry Boyer (Sharon), and Terry Boyer, grandchildren, Brian Lawson (Veronica), and Emily Hogan (Dylan Bender), and great grandchildren, Brian "CoCo" Lawson, Leah Lawson, and Ellie Bender. 

Charles enjoyed and took great pride in his family, he also enjoyed his friends, fishing, auctions, and his kitty cats. He will be deeply missed by many. The family would like to thank Saint Luke's for the excellent care he received from many doctors in his later years. Also, thank you to Tiffany Springs Rehabilitation LTC for the care they provided in the last year and half of his life. A very special thank you to David, Kay, OHE.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 am Saturday, September 30, 2023 with funeral services to start at 11:00 AM Saturday. The interment with military honors will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ricky T. Nichols 70, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Saturday, September 16, 2023 in St. Joseph, MO. He was born May 31, 1953 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Anna Belle and Gilbert Nichols. 

Ricky was preceded in death by wife, Carol Sue Nichols, his parents, brothers, Greg and Mike Nichols, sister, Kimberly Ann Cooper. 

Survivors include children: Ricky (Lori) Nichols, Brian (Misty) Nichols, Cathy Nichols, Christy Nichols-Hamilton, and Missy Nichols, siblings: Gib, Danny and Cindy Nichols, 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Barbara " Barb" Marie Ballard 76, of Elwood, KS., passed away Saturday September 16, 2023 in a St. Joseph, MO hospital after a long battle with cancer. She was born March 15, 1947 in St. Joseph, Missouri daughter of the late Evelyn &amp; Albert Budine. 

She graduated from Central High School, class of 1965 then attended Gard Business University. She worked at the local casino for over 21 years. 

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Ray. 

Survivors include her children: Maria (Sam) Ballard, Jeff (Andrea) Ballard, and Rosita Sanchez and sister, Becky (Jeff) Cruz.

William Doyle (Bill) Maxwell, age 90, died September 18, 2023, at his home.&nbsp;

Bill was born December 5, 1932 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Helen and Clarence Maxwell. He attended Musser, Hall, and Bliss Junior High schools. He graduated from Central High School in 1950.&nbsp;

Bill served four years (1951-1955) in the Navy during the Korean war and was aboard the LST 561, LST 742, and the USS Mount Mt McKinley AGC-7. He was honorably discharged as a Radioman Second class in 1955.&nbsp;

Bill then attended St. Joseph Junior College for two years prior to transferring to the University of Kansas School of Architecture. Upon graduation, Bill worked for Brunner &amp; Brunner Architects for 8 years, then Herschman &amp; Douglas Architects for 7 years. Bill was a registered as an Architect in Missouri and was assigned to a number of buildings and projects in St. Joseph and area. Bill became employed in the engineering department at the St. Joseph Quaker Oats facility, where he designed food processing equipment installation and did mechanical engineering surveys. Bill was among 15 mid-level employees who were down-sized in 1995 after 20 years.&nbsp;

Bill then taught two engineering Classes at Missouri Western College for three years and later oversaw two Missouri Western construction projects for two years.&nbsp;

Bill was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite mason and was a past master of Charity-Zeredatha # 189 lodge.&nbsp;

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Mary Barnett Maxwell of 62 years, sister Helen Audrey Wood, brothers Robert (Bob) Maxwell and Marvin Donald Maxwell.&nbsp;

Bill is survived by his sister Myrtle Irene Holland of Wellsville, Kansas, sons Michael Maxwell, Omaha Nebraska, David Maxwell and wife Jenna Nguyen, three grandchildren, Dr. Amanda Maxwell, Jonathan Maxwell, and Kimberly Maxwell of Pearland, Texas.&nbsp;

Celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the Wyatt Park Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Full Military Honors will held on the church grounds following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be sent to the “Friends of the St. Joseph Animal Shelter”

Robert "Brandon" Rose passed away peacefully with his parents at his side on Sunday September 17, after a lengthy illness.

&nbsp;Brandon was born May 13, 1982, to Bob and Kim (Gastineau) Rose in Saint Joseph, MO. Brandon enjoyed watching the Chiefs and the Royals. He spent countless hours rooting on his favorite teams, from his favorite booth, at the Ground Round. Brandon was known to be an incredible hard worker, beloved son and brother. Brandon spent much of his time with his son, Riley playing video games.

&nbsp;Brandon is preceded in death by grandparents and his brother Jason. Survivors include his mother Kim (Gastineau) Rose, his father Bob Rose, Sister Megan Rose, Megan's partner Peter Bruhling, niece Kinlee, nephew Tristan, Brandon's son Riley Rose, and his son's mother-Lindsey Holcomb. Brandon also leaves behind various aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends who knew and loved him.&nbsp;

Myrtle M. Wright-Dynes 100, of St. Joseph, passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at a local hospital.

&nbsp;Myrtle worked many years in nursing. She was an administrator, owner, operator of nursing homes in Kansas and St. Joseph, MO which were Wright Rest Manor and Citadel Healthcare. She loved playing music with Bobby George and Joe Husky in South Missouri. She loved spending time with family.

She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, first husband James Wright, son Jim Wright, and daughters Sheila Dempsey, Bonnie Tumlinson-Oliva, and Stella Wright.&nbsp;

Survived by, husband Robert Dynes, daughter Deanna (Jack) Hunt, sons, Alvin Wright and Jerry (Carolyn) Smith, step children Bob Dynes and Brenda Dynes-Shanks, 10 grandchildren, and numerous great and great great grandchildren.

Funeral service 2:00 PM Friday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00 - 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Myrtle Maxine Wright-Dynes 1923 - 2023

Donald R. Painter went home to be with the Lord on September 15, 2023, surrounded by his family and friends. &nbsp;

He was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri on September 10, 1926, to George and Rose Tindle Painter and lived all his life in the Saint Joseph area. He graduated from Lafayette High School where he participated in sports and was a skilled boxer, eventually boxing at both a semi-pro and pro level.

After graduation from high school, he served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He sailed on tankers in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. He was within sight of the USS Missouri when Japan signed the agreement to surrender, which ended World War II.

After the war, he returned to Saint Joseph where he met and married Louise Koneczny, June 25, 1952. He worked for the Railroad in the Corby Building in downtown Saint Joseph. During the Korean War he was drafted and served as First Sergeant on the front lines and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.

After his discharge from the Army, he returned to his former job at the railroad in Saint Joseph. In June of 1956, he went to work at the American Angus Association as a supervisor. He was named Office Manger in 1958 and Director of Member Services in 1978. He was inducted in the Angus Heritage Foundation in 1992. He was a highly respected and valuable member of the executive team of the Angus Association where he retired in the spring of 2001.

Don was highly respected for his integrity and his strong work ethic. He cared relentlessly for his parents, his wife, and companion, Joyce Watts, in their times of need. He was a man who blessed many others with his generosity. He was a very private man who genuinely cared for others.

Don was an outdoorsman. Over the years he had cabins on area lakes and rivers. The last cabin was on the Missouri River where he enjoyed boating. He had several motorcycles. He was a pilot and owned several planes. Flying was the pastime he enjoyed most.

Don is preceded in death by his wife Louise, his parents, his brother Roy, and his companion, Joyce. He is survived by a special niece who cared for him in his home, many other nephews and nieces and many friends. Don requested no visitation or funeral services.

Ronald Forrest Lynn Zirkle, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023.

He was born October 28, 1936 in St. Joseph to Joseph and Margrete (Klawuhn) Zirkle. He grew up in St. Joseph and was a 1954 graduate of Central High School.

Ronald married Phyllis Starr on May 4, 1958. Together, they shared 65 years of marriage.

He proudly served his country for 32 years, first in the U.S. Air Force, then in the Missouri Air National Guard, retiring from the military in 1985. He also worked for Curtis Industries and Polsky Motors.

Ronald enjoyed spending time with family, visiting with friends as much as possible, and planning Labor Day family reunions at the farm.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Roger Zirkle and Roland Zirkle.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; children, Timothy and Terry Zirkle, Starr and Darryl Richardson, and Rod and Shelly Zirkle; six grandsons, Alexander and Gentry Richardson, Zachary and Kimberly Richardson, Colton and Leslie Zirkle, Dayton and Cassi Zirkle, Wyatt Zirkle, and Logan Zirkle; great-grandchildren, Grant and Audrey Richardson, Maverick Richardson, and Mallory Zirkle; sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

Ronald Zirkle 1936 - 2023

Virginia Ruth (Hazzard) Patee, 101, passed from this life on September 16, 2023. Virginia was born on June 17, 1922 in Gentryville, MO to Otis and Effie (Myers) Hazzard.

Ruth, as she preferred, graduated from Worth High School, Worth MO.

On December 20, 1941 Ruth married the love of her life, Major James C. Patee Sr. in Grant City, Mo. He preceded her in death on November 11, 2009.

Ruth and James worked on a farm in Isadora, MO where their first child was born. In July 1944 James answered the call and they began an amazing 20-year military career in the U.S. Army. Living in California, Kentucky, Hawaii, Germany and many other duty stations and as a military wife she embraced this life with all the strength, courage and love of supporting her husband as he served his country. Ruth and James retired in June1964 after 20 years in the Army.

They returned to St. Joseph, Mo where James started his second career with Sears Roebuck and Company while Ruth began her new life with 2 boys in college, 2 elementary aged girls and an infant son. They bought a beautiful house that had been neglected and together they worked tirelessly to make it their home. Ruth resided in their home for almost 60 years.

Ruth was an avid lover of all plants and animals. Feeding, studying and then educating us about her birds, there wasn’t an animal that didn’t love her nor a plant that she couldn’t make grow including her 60-year-old Angel Wing Begonia that is still thriving. An amazing chef, meals were always the highlight of any family gathering. In her spare time Ruth enjoyed reading, watching her “shows” and listening to Tommy Dorsey and Gene Autry country music.

Ruth was a member of the Order of The White Shrine of Jerusalem, as well as a 55-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star,

Her parents, siblings Ruby Allen, Reba Killen, Mary Chowning, Patricia Dunlap, Barbara Catron, Forest Hazzard, Roy Hazzard and great grandson Tyler James Merrill precede Ruth in death.

Charles "Chuck" V. Schott, a lifelong resident of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2023. Born on March 9, 1944, to Leo J. and Juanita M. (Barnett) Schott, Chuck was a kind-hearted man who touched the lives of many.

Chuck graduated from Christian Brothers High School. He went on to serve his country as a member of the Army National Guard. Following his service, he embarked on a fulfilling career with Mead Paper Products, where he worked for 30 plus years. His colleagues at Mead became a second family to him, and he cherished the camaraderie and friendships he formed there.

He was a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals, and was a regular at the St. Joe Frontier Casino, where he enjoyed the thrill of the game and the company of friends. An animal lover, he found joy in the companionship of pets. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandson, Tate Buch.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Juanita, and his sister, Janet Corwin.

He is survived by his daughters, Kim, Kelly, Jennifer, and Heather; his grandson, Tate; his brother, Leo "Lee" Schott, Jr. (JoAnn); and his nephews, Matt, Mitch, and Mike, and niece, Mindy, along with numerous other nieces and nephews.

Frank John Byorick, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, September 15, 2023, after a lengthy illness.

He was born on January 22, 1938, to Frank H. and Hermione D. (Wienczkowski) in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania.

He was a proud member of the United States Navy and later worked as a field manager for Wire Rope until retiring in 2001.

On February 27, 1960, he was united in marriage to Helen Irene Worley, with whom he shared 63 loving years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joan Schneider.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Helen; children, Michael Byorick (Patricia), Robert Byorick (Linda), Anne Bortz (Michael), Stephen Byorick (Sonya), and Mary Boos (Donald); sister, Janet Anderson (Dennis); twelve grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Havin Cole Marrant, affectionately known as "Cole", was born in North Kansas City, Missouri, on March 5, 2002, To Kevin D. Marrant and Jennifer L. Marrant Bingham. Cole's educational journey led him to graduate from Osborn High School Class of 2020. His passion for trucks and tractors led him to obtain his Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the age of 18. He worked with local farmers and worked as a truck mechanic. He loved his current job trucking for Jimmy Downs. &nbsp;

Cole's memory will forever be cherished by his surviving family members, including his mother, Jennifer (Bruce) Marrant Bingham; his sisters, Alexa Samples and Camille (Daeton) Stevens, and his brother, Clayton (Kaitlyn) Marrant. &nbsp;His grandparents, Jack and Janet Tippit, were a source of immense love and support, and he is also remembered fondly by his Aunt Susanne (Aaron) Perkins, Uncle Mike (Sarah) Marrant, Cole’s niece, Serinna, and a soon-to-arrive nephew, Waylon, will carry forward his legacy, as will his numerous friends.

Donna M. Thonen, 87, of Hiawatha, KS died Saturday evening, September 16, 2023 at the Maple Heights Nursing where she had been a short time.

Donna was born December 6, 1935 in Hiawatha, KS one of nine children born to Guy and Mabel Watkins Corbet. She graduated from Hiawatha High School with the Class of 1953. Donna married Lawrence Thonen November 13, 1955. Donna and Lawrence loved to travel and took many trips over the years, whether it be touring the countryside with the occasional bus trip or taking a cruise. They celebrated 66 years together before his passing February 18, 2022.

During her working career, Donna could be found at the front desk of the Hiawatha Daily World. She would later go to work for the Savings and Loan Bank as a teller. Donna was also very involved in the community. She was definitely a people person and loved her friends. She was always on the go and didn’t sit still long. &nbsp;

Donna spent many hours volunteering at the Brown County Historical Society. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha where you would see her helping with potlucks and cooking and serving funeral dinners. She was also a member of the LWML.

She is survived by two daughters; Sherry (Alan) Ely and Sandy (Bob) Bowen both of Hiawatha, a grandson; Tyler Thieme of Topeka, KS, sister; Edna Mae Futscher of Sun City, AZ, and many nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

Donna was also preceded in death by her brothers; Veryn, Dallas, Dale, Murl, Arlan “Bud”, Kenneth, and Norman.

Friends may call the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Thursday until 5 p.m. that evening. The visitation is planned for Friday, September 22th from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha with Celebration of Life Services to follow at 11 A.M. Randy Joe Boydston, 69, of Camden Point, MO passed away September 17, 2023.

He was born on June 25, 1954, to Ernest Raymond and Lela Maxine (Wright) Boydston in St. Joseph, MO. Randy grew up on the family farm in Camden Point and graduated in 1972 from North Platte High School.

On March 15, 1974, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Russell. After their marriage they lived in the Camden Point area where they made their home.

Randy farmed for several years until his retirement when he went to work for Clyde Hill. Clyde taught him all he knew about dirt work and running heavy machinery. After Clyde passed away, he continued to work for other contractors in the area.&nbsp;

Randy was a member of the Camden Point Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Lonnie Boydston and his sister-in-law Marti Boydston.

Randy is survived by his wife Cheryl Boydston; siblings, Carolyn Hepler and husband Charlie, Mary Park and husband Larry, and Dean Boydston; sister-in-law Linda Boydston; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Randy Joe Boydston 1954 - 2023

Edna E. Coldsmith passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Gower Convalescent Center in Gower, MO. She was 95.

Edna was born May 1, 1928, in Weleetka, OK to William D. Howell and Theresa M. (Newmaster) Howell. Her family later moved to Okmulgee, OK, where she graduated high school in 1946. She attended the Texas State College for Women in Denton, TX, and transferred to The University of Tulsa, where she graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

She taught elementary school in Overland Park, KS where she met the love of her life, Donald C. Coldsmith in a social circle of friends. Edna and Don married on November 6, 1960, and blended their families, then added daughter Connie to the mix. They soon built a home in the country in Emporia, KS, where they enjoyed raising the girls, Appaloosa horses, chickens, and cattle. Although Edna loved the country life, it was never a good day for the person who tracked barnyard animal manure into the kitchen! She enjoyed being home while the girls were growing up, volunteering as a 4-H leader, cooking and sewing for the family, as well as running the household. Some of her most cherished moments were time spent at Camp Wood YMCA on outings with the Flint Hills Saddle Club, as well as pasture picnics in the Flint Hills of Chase County.

In 1970, Edna was diagnosed with breast cancer, having a radical mastectomy, and in 1971 became the first Reach to Recovery support person in Emporia for the American Cancer Society. She loved helping and encouraging other women with a similar diagnosis. She was active in the Lyon County Republican Women’s organization, where she served as co-president in 2002, and also enjoyed many years working the local election polls and boards, while continuing her work with Reach to Recovery.

In 1985, Edna took recertification classes, renewing her teaching certificate in 1986, and began substitute teaching on a regular basis. Her passion for the classroom then found her teaching 2nd grade full time at Neosho Rapids Elementary School, until her retirement in 1994. That same year, Edna was asked by the District Court system to serve on a committee and citizens review board for Social and Rehabilitation Services, which she was involved with for many years.

Edna and Don were very active in the First United Methodist Church in Emporia, leading a Sunday School class together each week. Her love for working with children then presented an opportunity in the form of La Esperanza mission school, sponsored by the church, and led by Edna. It was a supervised after school program for the Spanish speaking community in Emporia, and brought her so much joy. She was known as “Abuela”, or Grandma, to each of the children, as well as their families. During her time at La Esperanza, she enrolled in a “survival Spanish” class at ESU so that she could communicate more effectively, took them on a field trip to the Historical Museum in Topeka, and even took them to meet the Governor. After handing the reins to the new director in 2001, she continued to serve on the mission committee.&nbsp;

Edna loved to entertain, and people were always welcome at Edna and Don’s home in Emporia. Happy Hour was held every afternoon, and she could whip up a meal fit for company if someone dropped by unannounced, or if she’d planned it for weeks. She entertained many friends, family, dignitaries and assorted others over the years. One of her favorite dinner parties was held for the cast of the movie “Bad Company”, filmed in the area around Emporia and Chase County in the early 1970’s. Don was the cast physician during filming, and the family had gotten acquainted with members of the crew, including the main actor Jeff Bridges. Many of the attendees may still be trying to remember what all happened that night, and those that do remember are still laughing about it. Edna and Don also hosted the annual Sunday School Christmas party at their home, which was the highlight of the year for many of those in attendance. Who knew that a “church” gathering could be that much fun?

Edna loved to travel, and used to say that she must be part gypsy. She always enjoyed a good road trip, and she and Don had many of those together. It was a slow-paced way to see much of the country, and she drove while Don read to her the latest chapters of books he was writing, or other literature. Their favorite trips were to the annual convention of the Western Writers of America, held in different locations each year. Edna and Don had many close friends in that organization, and in 1990 she was selected to be on a panel of writers’ spouses on the topic of “Trails and Trials of a Writers Spouse”, which was a big hit because of the spark and pizazz she brought to the presentation. Other notable trips included a trip with family to Cancun, an Alaskan cruise, and even a trip to NYC for a book signing and some sight-seeing. While the girls were young, there were also many family road trips to the Deep South, the Gulf of Mexico, Washington DC, Colorado and all parts in between.&nbsp;

Everyone who knew Edna, knew what a character she was, and some of the traits that she will be most remembered for are her quick-witted sense of humor, and her contagious laugh that would light up a room. Edna was diagnosed with dementia in 2011, and throughout the remainder of her life, she continued to live happily, sharing her smile with everyone, and bringing many smiles to the faces of her caregivers. She was a 53-year breast cancer survivor, she had Covid twice, and other health conditions that appeared to be impossible to overcome throughout her life. She even seemed to choreograph the final week of her life by allowing plenty of visits from family and friends, sharing smiles, winks and facial expressions that those closest to her will cherish forever.&nbsp;

Edna is survived by daughters April Abril, and Connie Lorenzen, Don’s daughters Carol (Tenney) Smith, and Glenna Coldsmith; grandchildren Nathan (Tia) Edwards, Lacey (Travis) Taylor, Heather (Tyler) Coldsmith Young, Zachary Donald Young, Cassidy (Joe) Toeniskoetter, and Christian (Jessica James) Whayne; 5 great-grandchildren, with a 6th due in November.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her husband Don, her parents, and sister Jeanne (Randolph) Rhoads, and Don’s daughter Leslie (Richard) Whayne.

Edna E. Coldsmith passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Gower Convalescent Center in Gower, MO. She was 95.Edna was born May 1, 1928, in Weleetka, OK to William D. Howell and Theresa M. (Newmaster) Howell. Her family later moved to Okmulgee, OK, where she graduated high school in 1946. She attended the Texas State College for Women in Denton, TX, and transferred to The University of Tulsa, where she graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.She taught elementary school in Overland Park, KS where she met the love of her life, Donald C. Coldsmith in a social circle of friends. Edna and Don married on November 6, 1960, and blended their families, then added daughter Connie to the mix. They soon built a home in the country in Emporia, KS, where they enjoyed raising the girls, Appaloosa horses, chickens, and cattle. Although Edna loved the country life, it was never a good day for the person who tracked barnyard animal manure into the kitchen! She enjoyed being home while the girls were growing up, volunteering as a 4-H leader, cooking and sewing for the family, as well as running the household. Some of her most cherished moments were time spent at Camp Wood YMCA on outings with the Flint Hills Saddle Club, as well as pasture picnics in the Flint Hills of Chase County.In 1970, Edna was diagnosed with breast cancer, having a radical mastectomy, and in 1971 became the first Reach to Recovery support person in Emporia for the American Cancer Society. She loved helping and encouraging other women with a similar diagnosis. She was active in the Lyon County Republican Women’s organization, where she served as co-president in 2002, and also enjoyed many years working the local election polls and boards, while continuing her work with Reach to Recovery.In 1985, Edna took recertification classes, renewing her teaching certificate in 1986, and began substitute teaching on a regular basis. Her passion for the classroom then found her teaching 2nd grade full time at Neosho Rapids Elementary School, until her retirement in 1994. That same year, Edna was asked by the District Court system to serve on a committee and citizens review board for Social and Rehabilitation Services, which she was involved with for many years.Edna and Don were very active in the First United Methodist Church in Emporia, leading a Sunday School class together each week. Her love for working with children then presented an opportunity in the form of La Esperanza mission school, sponsored by the church, and led by Edna. It was a supervised after school program for the Spanish speaking community in Emporia, and brought her so much joy. She was known as “Abuela”, or Grandma, to each of the children, as well as their families. During her time at La Esperanza, she enrolled in a “survival Spanish” class at ESU so that she could communicate more effectively, took them on a field trip to the Historical Museum in Topeka, and even took them to meet the Governor. After handing the reins to the new director in 2001, she continued to serve on the mission committee.&nbsp;Edna loved to entertain, and people were always welcome at Edna and Don’s home in Emporia. Happy Hour was held every afternoon, and she could whip up a meal fit for company if someone dropped by unannounced, or if she’d planned it for weeks. She entertained many friends, family, dignitaries and assorted others over the years. One of her favorite dinner parties was held for the cast of the movie “Bad Company”, filmed in the area around Emporia and Chase County in the early 1970’s. Don was the cast physician during filming, and the family had gotten acquainted with members of the crew, including the main actor Jeff Bridges. Many of the attendees may still be trying to remember what all happened that night, and those that do remember are still laughing about it.
