Patricia A. (Spiek) Whitley, of St. Joseph, passed away September 9, 2023. &nbsp;She was born January 20, 1937 in Faucett, MO, to Johanna and Ignacious Spiek.

She graduated from Faucett High School and worked at KFEQ-AM/TV and Seitz Foods; retiring from Sara Lee in 2001.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers, Eddie, Henry, Clarence and six sisters, Margaret Carney, Clara Gillespie, Gertie Dale, Frances Downing, Loretta Judy and Josephine Studer.

Survivor is her son Edward J. Whitley (Angi) and several nieces and nephews.

Patricia was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and also was a contributor to many charities.

Memorial service will be Friday, September 15, 2023, at 10:00 am at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Rosary will be recited Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 6:00 pm followed by visitation until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Harlon Lee, 47, Bethany, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 26, 2023.

He was born on December 31, 1975, to Gregory A. and Sadie L. (Cooper) Lee.

Harlon enjoyed working on electronics, surfing the internet and watching movies. He was an animal lover; he was especially fond of cats.

He was preceded in death by his mother; and his brother Richard Lee.

Survivors include his children, Harlon Jr. and Gracie Lenore, and significant other, Megan Schneider.

Harlon Lee 1975 - 2023

Jon Mark “Franky” Davis passed away Thursday, September 7, 2023 in his daughter Michelle’s home, as his wife Deborah, daughter Michelle, son-in-law James, and granddaughter Laura held his hands. Jon had been in hospice care since Friday, September 1st, having been diagnosed with stage 4b metastatic stomach cancer just weeks before. It was his wish that his wife Deborah Lee Davis’ beautiful face be the last thing he saw before leaving this world, and it was so.

Many times, perhaps even most of the time, when people pass we don’t see it coming and don’t have the opportunity to say the things we later wished we had said. We are grateful that wasn’t the case with Jon Mark “Franky”.

In his final days, Jon welcomed a long list of family and friends. He got to spend time with his daughter Michelle, son-in-law James, and sons David, and Stephen. He visited with his brother Rick, Rick’s wife Judy, and his sister Linda, as well as his cousins Cliff, Cliff’s wife Joyce, and his cousin Kimmy. He also saw many of his nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, his children from his first marriage, many of his grandchildren, and his great-grandson. Several friends, both old and new, also stopped in to express their love. Among them were his good friends Mike, Sal, and Pedro.

Jon grew up in the Southside of St Joseph and attended Benton High School. He served three years in the Navy before attending MWSC where he graduated with an associate’s degree. He worked over a decade at Friskies as a maintenance mechanic and two decades at Ford Motor Company as an electrician. He retired from Ford in the winter of 2021.

Jon was an ornery jokester beloved by all. He had a knack for finding treasures disguised as junk and selling them for impressive profits. He was a generous man who would happily give family or friends the shirt off his back. He was also a tremendous resource —whatever it is you may have needed, Jon Mark “knew a guy.”

Jon and Deborah celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on April 13th, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Eva (Taylor) Davis; his adopted grandson, Markitos; his brother, Edwin Floyd Davis; brothers-in-law, David Buxton and Doug Mayhugh; numerous aunts and uncles, cousins and a great-nephew.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah; daughter, Michelle Morgan (James); sons, David Davis (Heather) and Stephen Davis; adopted daughter, Gabriela Maytorena (Marco Torres); grandchildren, German, Shyann, Jonas, Dalton, Maxwell, Maddie, Jacob, Laura, Mallory, Maya, Ben, Kenzie, Emma, Tessa, Gabriel and Dylan; brother, Richard Davis (Judy); sister, Linda Day; brother-in-law, Ray Buxton (Connie); sisters-in-law, Gloria Mayhugh and Cindy Notbusch; numerous cousins, including special cousin Clifford Bellomy (Joyce); numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, other extended family members and friends, including Mike, Sal, Pedro, Walt and Melissa Brown, John Wayne and Janice Cluck.

Jon Mark 'Franky' Davis 1954 - 2023

Cecelia E. “Sissy” (Gardner) Chesnut, 96, of Dearborn, MO went to her heavenly home on September 8, 2023, at the Gower Convalescent Center.

She was born to Elmer and Mary Gardner on August 14, 1927. She graduated from DeKalb High School in May of 1946.

On August 30, 1946, she was united in marriage to John W. Chesnut. Afterwards, they lived near Dearborn where they made their home. The marriage produced two sons, Tom and Bernard. John passed away on November 10, 2000.&nbsp;

Sissy was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dearborn. Her career was in the medical field, where she was an assistant to Dr. David Meyers (GYN) Office for many years in Smithville, MO.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings and many nieces and nephews.

Sissy is survived by her sons and their wives, Tom and Regina Chesnut of Dearborn and Bernard and Debbie Chesnut of Edgerton, MO; four grandchildren Todd and Melissa Chesnut, Tim Chesnut, Crystal and Fred Theis and Christina and Derek Holmes; seven great-grandchildren John, McKenzie, Chase, Chance, Beau, Lainey and Hadley; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.&nbsp;

Gary Frederick Jahne, 89, of St Joseph, met His Savior face to face on September 1, 2023.Gary was born February 15, 1934, in Andrew County to Gus and Sylvia (Mowry) Jahne. 

Gary spent his childhood in Graham, MO eventually moving to St Joseph with his parents. He met the love of his life, Barbara Greenwell in 1954 at their church youth group. Gary and Barbara were both graduates of Lafayette High School. They married in 1957 and had 53 wonderful years together before her passing in2010. Gary and Barbara were longtime members of Brookdale Church.

Gary was a US Army veteran having served at Camp Hanford in Washington State as a radar operator onan Anti-Aircraft Battery during the Cold War.He retired from Boehringer Ingelheim after 38 years and was a member of Boehringer’s Veterans Club. His grandfather immigrated to the United States from Dresden, Germany to New York City. Gary’s father, Gus Jahne and his uncle, John Jahne, came from New York City to the Midwest on the Orphan Train. The Karrasch family fostered them and provided them with a loving home. Gary traveled around NW Missouri sharing his father’s and his uncle’s story and the history of the Orphan Trains and the many riders.

Gary will be remembered for his love of family, his quick wit, his fountain of knowledge, his amazing storytelling, and how he was the hands and feet of Jesus. 

Gary is survived by his 3 children, Jeffrey Jahne (Annette), Julie Williams (Robert) and Jill Frakes (Jackson). His grandchildren Aaron Corbet (Alisha), Cameron Corbet (Courtney), Jairika Sipes (Zachary),Madison Frakes, Montana Frakes, Rob and Denise Williams, Tim Williams, his great grands, who lovingly called him PaPa Great – Adalynn, Avie, Allison, Rogan, Winnie, Landon and Faith. Nephews, nieces, and his cousins whom he considered brothers and sisters.

Kathleen Myers, 93, Atchison, Kansas, died Friday, September 8, 2023, at Amberwell Hospital.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 11, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Benedict’s Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be Monday, at 12:00 P.M. and visitation will follow until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Humane Society of Atchison.&nbsp;

Kathleen was born November 25, 1929, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of John and Maurgerita M. Razo. She attended St. Benedict’s Catholic School.&nbsp;

She and John Paul “Petey” Myers were married August 16, 1958, at St. Benedict’s Church. Mr. Myers preceded her in death on September 19, 2006.

Kathleen was a devote Catholic attending mass as often as she could. She enjoyed shopping and working on crosswords. She loved gardening and planting flowers; she canned many tomatoes over the years. Kathleen was always up for a trip to the casino. &nbsp;

Survivors include two sons, JP (Rita) Myers, Fair Grove, MO, Rick (Joyce) Myers, Troy, KS, two daughters, Patty (Daniel) Gibson, Indian Hills, CO, Mary Myers, Honolulu, HI, two grandchildren, Ian Myers, Sarah Garoutte, and three great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Shirley, of St. Joseph, MO, was born on June 23, 1930, to Lilly Pearl (Smith) and John L. Zimmerman at their home in Blythedale, MO. She received her “Angel Wings” on September 7, 2023. She was the loving sister to Forrest (Bob) Zimmerman, Leroy Zimmerman, Margaret Zimmerman, Emma (Zimmerman) Lowe, Garland “Buck” Zimmerman, Vivian “Tiny” ( Zimmerman) Stallsworth, and Helen (Zimmerman) McLain, all who have preceded her in death.

Shirley married Joseph Carroll Glenn and of that union were four kids. She later married Louis Estes who preceded her in death in July of 1996. Shirley attended school in Mt. Moriah, MO. Her career included, Noma Lites, Kresge’s, J. C. Penney’s, Wire Rope and ADCO. She was a self-taught seamstress and perfectionist. Her last sewing project was making the wedding party, including the wedding dress, for her granddaughter 26 years ago. She later began counted cross stitch completing amazing pieces for her family. She then developed Macular Degeneration which forced her to give up what she loved doing. She overcame the obstacles of limited eyesight by occupying her time with Bingo and various activities with her best friend Sophia Ward at Country Squire. Before she became lovingly known as “GeGe” to all that knew her she was known as “MeMa with Angels”, as she collected numerous angels from family and friends over the years.

Shirley was also preceded in death by her husbands; son, Rick Glenn and son-in-law Greg Murphy. She is survived by children: Pam (Chip) Brock, Rita (Larry) Hook, Stephanie Murphy and daughter-in-law, Joyce Glenn. Grandchildren: Sean (Tasha) Evans, Dana (John) Whetstine, Ashley (Matt) Griffey, Tyler (Brittany) Glenn, Jason (Cara) Beasley, Kyle (Chrissy) Rehm, Abby and Kensie Murphy. Great-grandkids: Emersen and Adalyn Evans; Lexie, Tayiah, Kinlee, Malaina and Emmyjo Whetstine; Payton Griffey, Porter Cluck and Jaeger and Enzo Glenn; Steevie and Stryker Beasley; Jaycelyn, Braylyn and Haylyn Rehm; Safiah Wilkinson, Adilaiya and Zamirah Billups and Paislee Hale and her Soul Sister, Sophia Ward.

Shirley E. 'GeGe' Estes 1930 - 2023

James E. Hart, 80, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away the 5th day of September 2023.

He was born on the first day of the New Year, January 1, 1943, in St. Joseph to Paul and Virginia (Stamp) Hart.

Jim graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1961. On January 18, 1964, he was united in marriage to Peggy Lynn McHugh.

Jim served as the president at Gray Manufacturing, a company he proudly served for over 30 years.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and coaching a variety of sports with his children. Family always came first, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy, so proud of all of them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Virginia, and son, Michael Hart.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy; children and in laws, Patrick (Angela), Julie (Jamie), Tim (Carla) and Jane (Michael); his grandchildren, Ryan, Ali, Sean, Emily, Tyler and Joe; sister, Marcia Pearl (David), and numerous extended family members.

Mass of Christian Burial and Public Livestream 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family will gather with friends from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Juanito (Dr. John) Villahermosa, 93, died September 4, in Middleton, WI. Dr. John came to Savannah with his wife, Alice (deceased), and their two daughters, Melicia (Mellie) and Bibiana (Bibi) in 1969 to practice with Drs. Gilbert Kelley and Warren Baker. Dr. John went on to serve patients in Northwest Missouri until his retirement in 2014.

Dr. John was born on June 26, 1930, to Antonino Bibera and Felicidad Llosa Villahermosa on the island of Leyte in the Philippines, when it was a commonwealth of the United States. He was raised in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, but spent his early adolescent years hiding with family and friends amid the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines during World War II. Following the American liberation, he went on to excel in academics and student leadership roles. He completed his secondary education in Dumaguete and pre-medical studies and medical school at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. In 1957, he traveled to New York for a medical internship at the Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital in Elmira, followed by a surgical internship at Highland Hospital in Rochester, and then completed a medical residency in general surgery at the University of Rochester. He met Alice (nee Bump), a surgical nurse and instructor, during his internship. They married on May 2, 1959, at St. Catherine Church in Addison, NY. Their two daughters were born during his residency.

Upon completing residency, Dr. John returned to the Philippines with his young family to serve as the inaugural director of Holy Child, a Catholic hospital in Dumaguete. In 1965, they returned to the United States and moved to St. Joseph, where Dr. John and Alice worked at the former Sisters Hospital. Four years later, the family settled in Savannah. After practicing for nearly two decades in Savannah, he focused solely on general surgery when he joined the practice of Dr. Edward Beheler in St. Joseph for a brief period of time before retiring from general surgery due to health reasons. He then served patients at several MedClinic sites and continued to provide care at the Savannah clinic upon it becoming a Northwest Health Services site.

A few years after arriving in Savannah, Dr. John was named a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and then the International College of Surgeons. He was a member of the Missouri Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, Missouri State Surgical Society, Kansas City Surgical Society, and the Buchanan County Medical Society. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his dedication to patient care by several community groups and was recognized by the American Medical Association for achieving 50 years in medical practice. Upon retirement, he received the Samuel U. Rodgers Achievement Award from the Missouri Primary Care Association in recognition of his commitment to expanding access to health services for Missouri’s medically underserved.

During their 50 plus years together, Dr. John and Alice remained devoted to their Catholic faith and were active members of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Savannah. Both were recipients of the Rose Award for their years of service to St. Rose. In addition, John was a fourth-degree member of the Henry Bruns Council #6244 Knights of Columbus. Both were avid football fans with wonderful memories of attending Savannah High School, William Jewell College, University of Missouri, University of Notre Dame, and Kansas City Chiefs games. Later in life, their greatest passion was spending time with their great-grandchildren.

Following retirement, Dr. John traveled to and from the Philippines several times, allowing for sightseeing opportunities throughout the islands along with trips to Hong Kong and Singapore. He also enjoyed spending his most recent winters in Summerville, SC, where he quickly became a well-loved member of the Carillon at the Ponds community.

Dr. John was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, an infant son, and his wife. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mellie and Joseph Pouwels of Middleton and Bibi and Randy Miller of St. Joseph, and by granddaughter Chana Pouwels Roschyk, her spouse Jeremy, and three great grandchildren, Anaya, Creed, and Kale Locke of Granger, IN.

Dr. John’s family would like to share their appreciation for the care he received prior to his passing. During his decline, he received care from several medical professionals affiliated with University of Wisconsin Health, Medical University of South Carolina, UnityPoint Health-Meriter Wellness Center, Caring Made Easy Home Care, and Agrace Hospice Care.

Christian Edward "Buddy" Husing was born May 23, 1944, in Hamburg, Iowa. He was the first-born child of Christian Oscar "Bud" Husing and Kay (Harbin) Husing. Buddy came into the world while Bud was away fighting in World War II, and it wasn’t until Buddy was about a year old that Bud got to meet him.

Buddy grew up in Rock Port where he attended and graduated school. After graduation, Buddy worked with his dad at Bud and Buddy Husing Texaco station.

Buddy was united in marriage to Diana Bradley in 1963. To this union Angela Gail and Travis Hays were born. They later divorced. In 1982, Buddy was remarried to Sharon Peterson. They eventually divorced.

Through life experiences, Buddy discovered his talent and passion for carpentry. In 1982, he established Chris Construction where he devoted over 30 years to building and remodeling for people in the Atchison County area. Buddy was highly skilled in the trade, and people often sought his craftsmanship and advice.

In 1999, Buddy married Pam (Trivelpiece) Corken. With this marriage he gained three stepchildren, Trent, Erica, and Kaitlea Corken. After hanging up his tool belt, Buddy began working for Do It Best Hardware where he shared his knowledge with customers, and stories with anyone who would listen.

When Buddy didn’t have a hammer in his hand, he enjoyed fishing, attending car races and airshows, flying model airplanes, scratching scratch tickets, and spending time with his family. Buddy’s generous and kind heart couldn’t look past someone in need. He could often be found helping those in need, never expecting anything in return. Buddy never knew a stranger and had a passion for telling long stories.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Angela, and father-in-law Charles Trivelpiece.

Paula Sue (Maycroft) Andrews, 43 years old, of Atchison, Kansas, died unexpectedly on September 6, 2023, at her home.&nbsp;

Services to celebrate Paula’s life will be Sunday, September 10, 2023, at 3:00 pm at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Pastor George Baugh officiating. Visitation with the family will begin at 2 pm on Sunday before the service. &nbsp;

Paula was born on October 12, 1979, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Paul R. Maycroft and Susan (Guatney) Maycroft. She attended elementary schools in Atchison and graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School. She attended Kansas University for a year studying business and psychology.&nbsp;

Her favorite part of life was being a mom to her boy. She enjoyed doing crafts, she loved owls and elephants and spending time with her nieces and nephews; she actually enjoyed all children. She was a people person and will be always remembered for her kind hearted nature.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob” Allen Andrews, Jr., who she married on May 21, 2016, at the Rushville Christian Church. Her pride and joy is her only son, Adam Ray Martinez. Additionally, she is survived by her mother, Susan (Joseph, Jr.) McCoole; sisters, Stephanie Maycroft (Daniel Barkus), Brandi McCoole (Victor Brewer), Megan (David) Rapson; an aunt, Mary Trower; and step siblings, Toby Kerley, Tommy Kerley and Gina Brown.&nbsp;

Her father, Paul Maycroft, preceded her in death.

John Lee O'Dell 1941 - 2023

Paul Dean Shisler, 88, Stanberry, MO passed away Monday, September 4, 2023 at an Albany, MO hospital.

He was born April 1, 1935 in Stanberry, MO the son of Harland “Dutch” and Marcella (Grantham) Shisler

Paul Dean graduated from Stanberry High School in 1953 and married Beverly June Stuart September 18, 1955. Beverly preceded him in death in 1988. A daughter Paula Elaine, and two sons, Paul Kevin and Bruce Lynn were born to this union.

On May 18, 1991 he married Ferne Smith and gained a step-daughter, Rhonda.

He began his farming career in the Grantham Community with his uncles, Roy and Everett Grantham. His whole life was spent working the land and raising livestock with his sons and later his grandsons, Clay and Steve Shisler. His hobby was work and for relaxation he found more work.

When he got away from the farm he enjoyed car races, machinery auctions, Branson and country music shows.

He leaves behind his wife, Ferne. His step-daughter Rhonda (Steve) Ford, Mt. Paul Dean Shisler, 88, Stanberry, MO passed away Monday, September 4, 2023 at an Albany, MO hospital.He was born April 1, 1935 in Stanberry, MO the son of Harland “Dutch” and Marcella (Grantham) ShislerPaul Dean graduated from Stanberry High School in 1953 and married Beverly June Stuart September 18, 1955. Beverly preceded him in death in 1988. A daughter Paula Elaine, and two sons, Paul Kevin and Bruce Lynn were born to this union.On May 18, 1991 he married Ferne Smith and gained a step-daughter, Rhonda.He began his farming career in the Grantham Community with his uncles, Roy and Everett Grantham. His whole life was spent working the land and raising livestock with his sons and later his grandsons, Clay and Steve Shisler. His hobby was work and for relaxation he found more work.When he got away from the farm he enjoyed car races, machinery auctions, Branson and country music shows.He leaves behind his wife, Ferne. She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on September 22, 1941, to John L. and Marie (Lollar) Murphy.

Shirley earned her master’s degree and went on to teach in the St. Joseph School District for over 20 years. She taught at Benton High School, Lafayette High School and Hillyard Technical. After retirement, she participated in adult literacy and adult education programs.

She was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association, Missouri Vocation Association, National Business Education Association, Missouri Business Education Association and a dedicated member of the South Park United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Sharon K. Ziph, Paul E. Murphy and Dean Murphy; and nephew, Matthew Ziph.

Mary Frances Logan, an exceptional family matriarch and devoted wife, was born on the 27th of December 1949, in the bustling city of Saint Louis, MO, to loving parents, Paul and Eva Kovac. The Lord called her home on the 2nd of September 2023, in the peaceful confines of her home in Saint Joseph, MO. Her life was guided by a deep-rooted faith that illuminated every day of her existence with a radiant love.

Mary graduated in the class of 1968 from Bishop LeBlond High School and married her high school sweetheart, John, on April 12, 1969. They were married for 54 years. She later made her mark in business, contributing significantly as the co-owner of Kovac’s Grocery Store. She had a keen eye for opportunity and a hand always stretched out in service, traits that were apparent in the success and longevity of the store. Her professional achievements were a testament to her tenacity, hard-working nature, and unyielding spirit.

Despite her professional accomplishments, Mary's true achievements were rooted in the home, in the loving relationships she cultivated with her husband, children, and grandchildren. Mary is survived by her devoted husband, John Logan, their children, John Paul and wife Mireya Logan, Jeannette Logan, Eric Logan and wife Ashley Logan, and Josh Logan; her grandchildren, Ryan, Isabella, Hayden, and Ezekiel, who will remember her as a doting grandma who was never too busy for hide n seek in Kovac’s grocery store or a game of cards.

She leaves behind joyful memories and a great legacy with her siblings as well - PJ Kovac and wife Ronda, Mike Kovac and wife Tami, Mark Kovac and wife Susie, Sharon Edwards and husband Scott, Michelle France and husband Todd, Matt Kovac and wife Charity. Mary's presence will be cherished by numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws whom she shared countless moments of love and laughter with.

She is preceded in death by parents, Paul and Eva Kovac, and her sister, Jeannette Kovac.

Mary was a woman endowed with love which she generously showered on those around her. She was faith-filled and selfless, radiating joy and comfort to everyone she met. Her culinary skills were well-known, providing tangible evidence of the warmth and care that she put into every single part of her life. Her children were her world, and her grandchildren were her universe. She viewed every opportunity to spend time with her family as a special occasion, even traveling the world to ensure she didn't miss any precious moments.

Mary's accomplishments were a reflection of her unwavering love for her family and an enduring commitment to her faith. She epitomized the essence of motherhood and the spirit of a committed wife. Carol Burns Bayer, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, peacefully passed away on August 30th at home. She was born on February 1, 1937, in Youngstown, OH, the beloved first child of Robert and Alice Burns. Soon after, the family moved to Hazleton, PA, where Carol Ann was quickly joined by her siblings Robert (Bobby), Dorothy, and Mary Jean.

Growing up in Hazleton, she cultivated the qualities of kindness, responsibility, determination, love of the arts (she began playing the violin at the age of seven), and an unwavering dedication to family that would define her throughout her life.

Following graduation from nursing school, RN Carol set her sights on the bustling metropolis of New York City. There, she enjoyed working in surgery at New York Hospital, but also was plucked to become a fashion model. Most importantly, she met the love of her life, William Lang Bayer. They were married in 1959 and moved to Albany, where Bill completed medical school and their daughter Judy was born. From there, they moved first to Philadelphia and then Pittsburgh, where Barbara was born.

In 1969, they moved to Kansas City. Bill became the Executive Director of the Community Blood Center of Greater Kansas City, and Carol soon started her long involvement in the arts of this great city. At that time the Philharmonic was about to strike - brave Carol stepped in and had a mediation at her home that settled the strike for the moment. After several go-rounds, the Kansas City Symphony was born, and Carol was the founding President of the Friends of the Symphony. She revolutionized fundraising and awareness with phone-a-thons, group ticket sales, program advertisements, outreach concerts, and she was on the conductor search committee that brought Bill McGlaughlin to Kansas City. She also co-founded the Truman Anniversary Concert that filled RLDS auditorium for years. She was especially loyal to the Medical Arts Symphony, where she played violin and also was president for several years and hosted the annual Musicfest with 250+ people in our house on 59th street. She also founded the renowned Leopold Shopmaker Mid America Violin Competition. Seeing the need for funds for young artists led her to working with UMKC's Conservatory of Music where she became the first woman Chairman of the Board of Trustees. She started the gala Live on 55! and Live at Hallbrook! which in turn became Crescendo! Her other great love was Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company where she was chairman of the Board for many years. She was awarded the Missouri Arts Council Award, the state’s highest honor in the arts, in 1997.

With all this activity, she still found time to be the most wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, not to mention daughter and sister. She had boundless energy and did not know the meaning of the word CAN'T. She was a do-er! When daughter Barbara and son-in-law Mano Rafael opened Le Fou Frog in 1996, she was an integral part of creating the foundation for its success and did the books for over 20 years. Still, she found time for golf and travel with her husband, heartfelt talks with her daughters, and total devotion to her grandchildren. She leaves her sisters Dorothy and Mary Jean (Novalyn), sister-in-law Joyce Burns, sister-in-law Ethel Holtmann (Gary), daughters Judy and Barbara (Mano), grandchildren Noah, Ethan, Ryo, and Juliette, nieces/nephews Bill, Jill, Scott, Christine, Kelly, Steven, many grandnieces/nephews, and her grandcats Jack, Gabby, Mouse (Moon), and Roary.

Roberta M. Ewing, 82, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 28, 2023, surrounded by her family who loved her so dearly.

She was born August 24, 1941 in St. Joseph to Robert and Leona (Enyard) Mays. She grew up in St. Joseph and attended Bartlett School and Lafayette High School.

Roberta married Vernon Larry Ewing in 1969. He survives of the home.

She was a chef’s helper at the Benton Club for more than 20 years.

Roberta loved to cook and loved holiday gatherings. Everyone loved her strawberry short cake. People would make a point of coming to her house each Halloween for her popcorn balls.

She loved Christmas and decorating her house. Every room had Christmas ornaments; she loved a big tree. The outside of her house was lit up with all these lights on the fence and the reindeer in the yard.

Roberta was well-liked and touched many lives. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda; her parents; and siblings, Francis Williams, Mary Hill and Lawrence Mays.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon; children, Frances K. Hill, James O. Hill, Paula A. Ewing, and Vernon Larry Ewing, Jr. (Tanya); 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one sister; one brother; and special friend, Nancy Rucker.

Martin A. “Mike” Hoover, 80, of Oregon, Missouri passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at a Mound City care center.

Mike was born on July 7, 1943 in Fort Madison, Iowa to Marion and May F. (Cummings) Hoover. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1960. Mike was a truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his children, Joanne Morrison of Oreana, Illinois, and Donald M. Hoover of Oregon.

Mildred Louise Seider passed away Sunday, September 3, 2023 in Kansas City, MO. A visitation will be held 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.; followed by a 3:00 p.m. funeral service at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Platte City, MO. Interment will follow at the Camden Point Cemetery in Camden Point, MO. 

Mildred has requested that contributions be given to Our Savior Christian Academy—14155 Hwy. N—Platte City, MO 64079. Mildred was born January 25, 1936 in Rockville, MO to Benjamin Richard and Clara Emma (Vogt) Bracher. She was Baptized into the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ on February 23, 1936 and Confirmed on April 2, 1950. Mildred married Verlyn E. Seider on May 2, 1953, in Harrison, Arkansas. 

Verlyn was in the Air Force until 1963, and Mildred followed him to Roswell, New Mexico and to Loring Air Force Base, Maine. After leaving the Air Force, the couple resided in Gladstone, Dearborn, and finally in Platte City, MO. Mildred’s faith in the Lord was strong and fearless. She was a founding member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, committing much time and talent to the Church. As a mother and grandmother, Mildred encouraged a high sense of self-esteem, a love of learning, and respect for others. She was a willing participant in any activity that her grandchildren asked. The love of the outdoors followed Mildred to her passing. Her vegetable garden was glorious, giving ample produce, and her flowers were beautiful. Mildred’s hands were never idle—from gardening, to crocheting, to baking pies of making doughnuts. 

Mildred’s legacy is in the gift of her positive spirit and upbeat attitude. She always enjoyed life, no matter what the circumstance. A testament to her character was her warmth, her vigor, and her ability to see good in all things. Her love of Christ is the over-riding gift that she has given to her family and to those who were blessed to have known her. 

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Neil Bracher and her sister Elsie Bracher Wright. 

She is survived by her children: Paul Seider, &amp; wife Candee of Lee’s Summit, MO, Robert Seider &amp; wife Carla of Sunrise Beach, MO, Christine Seider Bunselmeyer, &amp; husband Keith of K.C., MO, Jacqueline Seider Lewis, &amp; husband Roger of K.C., MO, and Gary Seider, &amp; wife Ann of Centralia, MO; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

Mildred Louise Seider passed away Sunday, September 3, 2023 in Kansas City, MO. A visitation will be held 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.; followed by a 3:00 p.m. funeral service at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Platte City, MO. Interment will follow at the Camden Point Cemetery in Camden Point, MO. Mildred has requested that contributions be given to Our Savior Christian Academy—14155 Hwy. N—Platte City, MO 64079. Mildred was born January 25, 1936 in Rockville, MO to Benjamin Richard and Clara Emma (Vogt) Bracher. She was Baptized into the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ on February 23, 1936 and Confirmed on April 2, 1950. Mildred married Verlyn E. Seider on May 2, 1953, in Harrison, Arkansas. Verlyn was in the Air Force until 1963, and Mildred followed him to Roswell, New Mexico and to Loring Air Force Base, Maine. After leaving the Air Force, the couple resided in Gladstone, Dearborn, and finally in Platte City, MO. Mildred’s faith in the Lord was strong and fearless. She was a founding member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, committing much time and talent to the Church. As a mother and grandmother, Mildred encouraged a high sense of self-esteem, a love of learning, and respect for others. She was a willing participant in any activity that her grandchildren asked. The love of the outdoors followed Mildred to her passing. Her vegetable garden was glorious, giving ample produce, and her flowers were beautiful. Mildred’s hands were never idle—from gardening, to crocheting, to baking pies of making doughnuts. Mildred’s legacy is in the gift of her positive spirit and upbeat attitude. She always enjoyed life, no matter what the circumstance. A testament to her character was her warmth, her vigor, and her ability to see good in all things. Her love of Christ is the over-riding gift that she has given to her family and to those who were blessed to have known her.
