Helen Eileen Buttron passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Vintage Park in Atchison, KS surrounded by family at 78 years old. 

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, Sept. 24th, 2023, at the Becker Chapel, 402 3rd St, Effingham, KS with burial of cremated remains to follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, in Effingham, KS. The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm on Sunday until time of services at the Becker Chapel. She was born October 3, 1944, to the late Jack and Theresa (Meador) Taliaferro, Effingham, KS. She leaves three sons, Karl LeWayne (Brenda), Lancaster, KS, James Edwin Jr., Olathe, KS and Rex Stanley, Lancaster, KS, six granddaughters, one grandson and 10 great-grandchildren and one on the way. She also leaves a brother, Richard (Gerri) Taliaferro, Effingham, KS and two sisters, Mary Ann (Mark) Bergmann, Des Moines, Iowa and Marsha Collins, Valley Center, KS, and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Teresa Taliaferro, a brother Jerry Taliaferro and great-granddaughter Josie Stuart. 

Eileen, a proud 1962 graduate of Atchison County Community High School, was a dedicated member of her community during her time in Atchison County. She served as a member of the Star Homemakers Unit, holding multiple offices and making significant contributions. Eileen also lent her expertise to the Atchison County Home Economics Advisory Board and assumed the role of a project leader for both the Friendly Farmers and Lancaster Lightening 4-H clubs. Her commitment to the community involvement extended to her role as a charter member of the Atchison County Young Farm Wives organization. Eileen's devotion to community service earned her recognition, including the Outstanding Alumni 4-H award in 1971 and the Globe Outstanding Award.

She was an active member of the Union Church and the Union Church Ladies Society before moving to Mission, KS. Eileen also had a deep appreciation for outdoor activities, finding joy in canoeing and volksmarching. She was a member of the Village Presbyterian Church, the Heart of American Volksmarching Club, and the Kansas City Outdoor Club. Eileen was employed at the University of Kansas Medical Center in the Office of Continuing Education and Department of Pediatrics, in the Division of Neonatology since 1983. After retirement in 2011, she enjoyed traveling, her domino group, playing bunco, spending time with friends and attending her grandchildren’s activities. In 2020, she moved back to Lancaster to be closer to family. All her great-grandchildren became her pride and joy.

Kay Diane (Sandusky) Beattie, 84, of Savannah, MO, passed away Thursday,September 14, 2023.

Kay was born October 10, 1938 in St. Joseph, Missouri to the late, Lawrence andLucile (Rutherford) Sandusky, and was a 1956 graduate of Central High School.

Kay was united in marriage to Billy P. Beattie on December 14, 1958, they made their home on the family farm, where they raised their children, Sherry and Steve. Kay was a devoted wife and mother and was a caregiver for her husband until his passing On August 10, 2022.

She was a member of Savannah United Methodist Church and would often befound volunteering for her church and children’s school activities. She enjoyedknitting, reading, cooking, baking and family time.

Kay is survived by her daughter, Sherry Tunks (Martin) and son, Steve Beattie;four grandsons, Tyler Tunks, Andrew Tunks (Ashley), Mitchell Tunks (Maddie) andAustin Beattie; five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Charlotte, Benjamin, Boston andRosie; sister, Kathy Love (Jim); niece, Stacy Martin; nephew, Scott Love andextended family.

Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith Savannah Chapel; where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Rosella (Foster) Bolton, 91, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023.

Rosella was born December 19, 1931 on a farm near Craig, Missouri to Lewis and Florence (Scott) Foster.

Rosella graduated from Craig High School. &nbsp;She married E.C. Bolton in 1952 in Tarkio, Missouri. &nbsp; Rosella and E.C. farmed in the Tarkio area.

Rosella was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by her son James (Bennie) Bolton; grandson Aaron Bolton; great granddaughter Alice Bolton and sister Wanda (Fred Lederer) Rawlings.

Per her wishes, Rosella has been cremated. There are no services scheduled.

Gladys Mary Newton, 101, a beloved mother, aunt, and thoughtful neighbor, passed away on September 13, 2023. Born on June 23, 1922, in Kansas, to Vernon S. and Lenora E. (Engeman) Davis.

After graduating from Benton High School in St. Joseph, Gladys relocated to Washington, D.C. at the onset of World War II to serve her nation with the federal government. Following her tenure in D.C., she managed several roles back in St. Joseph for entities including the Draft Board, American Airlines, and the YMCA.

At the YMCA, she met her late husband, Paul Arnold Newton. Their love culminated in a beautiful marriage on October 1, 1949, a union that brought immense joy until Paul's passing on January 26, 2001.

Before eventually resuming her professional career, Gladys dedicated several years to nurturing her family. She returned to work with the St. Joseph School District and distinguished herself as a much-loved secretary at Webster School. She touched the lives of numerous students, parents, and colleagues over the years, and even post-retirement, she was often recognized and appreciated within the community as Mrs. Newton of Webster School.

A member of the Wyatt Park Baptist Church, Gladys embodied love, collecting for several charities. Gracious yet energetic, she was always ready for an adventure and seized every opportunity to travel, first with Paul and then later with her daughter. She also found great joy in her books—being an avid reader, she often immersed herself in various literary worlds.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Vernon and Lenora Davis; and brothers, Odell and Lloyd Davis. However, her vibrant spirit lives on in those she left behind, including her children, Jeffrey (Lucille) of Carmel, IN and Jennifer Newton of St. Joseph, MO; nephews, Steven, Mark, Perry Newton, and Scott Davis; niece, Becky Pressly; and her sister-in-law, Delores Newton.

Gayle Ann Pardo, 67, passed away on September 12, 2023, at Liberty Health and wellness in Liberty, Missouri. Gayle was born in Kansas City, MO to Paul and Norma Frieders. 

Gayle Graduated from North Platte High school in Dearborn, MO. She worked as a legal secretary for Shook, Hardy and Bacon Law Firm. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Dearborn, MO. She loved her Kansas City Chiefs, crossword puzzles, coloring but most of all She loved Studying the bible and praising her Lord and Savior constantly. Gayle was a happy, congenial person with everyone. She embraced life the best she could. 

Gayle is survived by a daughter, sister Paulette Tyler; Niece Stephanie Tyler and great nephew Avery Tyler: Nephew Paul Tyler and great nephew Keegan and Collin Tyler. She will be greatly missed. 

She expressed she loved us and looked forward to our life in Heaven. What a great testament to her life. A graveside service is scheduled for 10:30am, Saturday, September 16, 2023 at the Cowgill Cemetery in Cowgill, MO. Burial to follow. Arrangements by Vaughn Funeral Home, Weston, MO.

Anna B. Curtis, 91, a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away on September 12, 2023. Born on March 28, 1932, in Rushville, MO, Anna was a timeless beacon of love, nurture, and kindness.

Preceding her in death were her cherished husband, Carl; parents, Thomas and Margarete (Osborne) Hook; daughters, Anna Marie and Barbara Curtis; Grandchildren, Kyle and Carl A. Curtis, Nicholas Sutton, Greg Roberts, and Raymond Price; daughter-in-law, Gina Curtis; siblings, Martin Hook, Thomas Hook, Molly Barnes, Dorothy Hook, Flora Belle Hook, Mattie Hook, and Ada Hook.

She is survived by a large and loving family, including her children, Carol Bower (Mike), Shirley Kline (Greg), Karen Oliver (Gary), Peggy Schrader (Paul), Julie Mindermann (Paul), Mary Good (Chris); sons, Bill Curtis (Cindie), John Curtis, Jesse Curtis (Susan); special nephew, Eugene Hook; sister, Edna Mae Danberry; and over 30 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

She married Carl Earl Curtis on May 12, 1950 and they were married 72 years before he passed in February of 2023.

Anna generously devoted most of her life to caring for her family as a homemaker. As her children grew older, Anna broadened her horizons and began working at Maysville’s school library, where she later retired.

An enthusiast of gospel bluegrass music, Anna and Carl could often be found bringing joy to others through song at area churches and festivals. Her love for the outdoors was also reflected in her passion for gardening. Her green thumb was admired by all who saw her work, as she could coax even the most resistant plant to thrive.

What Anna adored most was her time caring for her nieces and nephews during the summer. She guided them with a mother's love, instilling in them the same values of compassion and tenderness that defined her.

Above all, Anna B. Curtis will be remembered as a woman of love. She had a heart that embraced all around her with warmth and understanding. Her legacy of love will forever blossom within the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Anna B. Curtis 1932 - 2023

Dr. Robert Stuber died at home, surrounded by loving family members on September 9, 2023. He succumbed to an aggressive cancer at age 84. Bob practiced and worked in the medical community in the town he loved for fifty years. His education included college and medical school at the University of Kansas, Internal Medicine Residency and a Cardiology Fellowship at Boston City Hospital, and a stint in the U.S. Air Force as a Captain and General Medical Officer. Dr. Stuber was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Geriatrics Board.

Bob started solo practice in St. Joseph before establishing Specialists of Internal Medicine, a group which he led for thirty years. He retired, but then resumed his medical activity to become Co-Medical Director and eventually Medical Director at Heartland Hospital. Bob was past president of the Buchanan County Medical Society. He also served as Medical Director at the Public Health Department of St. Joseph and as Consulting Physician at Volker Rehab.

For the past twenty years, Dr. Stuber has been a dedicated volunteer at the Social Welfare Clinic where he served as Board President. His devotion to the Welfare Clinic led to the creation of the C. Daniel Morton/Robert Stuber Annual Award in his honor. Recently, the Welfare Board decided to change the name from Social Welfare Clinic to: Stuber Health Center. There is also an annual Physician Recognition Award at Mosaic Hospital honoring Dr. Robert Stuber.

Bob and Mary Helen loved family vacations at their cabin in Ontario, Canada where he demonstrated his expertise as a master angler. Together they created nature trails and landscaped beautiful gardens in Canada and on their property St. Joe. His other passions were tennis, racquetball, biking, and coaching girls’ basketball and softball. Bob had a big heart and was very generous and engaged with his extended family. He left this message to them on passing: “May all of you have full and satisfying lives. I hope that each of you will not become insensitive to the basic needs of all humans. It’s been fun being with all of you. You are good people.”

Bob was a local expert on college football, especially Kansas University football. Everyone knew he would be at Memorial stadium in Lawrence or in front of the TV on Saturday afternoons. A sign outside the viewing room might have warned: “Beware Avid Fan Watching Football. Enter at your own risk.” In reality, Bob Stuber could have been employed as a broadcast color analyst.

In later years Bob became very interested in politics and submitted many witty, sage political posts on Facebook or in letters to the editor of the local paper. He was a true champion of the poor and unfortunate of the world. This driving passion was expressed in all his actions and writings.

Dr. Stuber was preceded in death by his parents Leo R. Stuber and Ruth D. Stuber, sister Nancy Stuber Schaag (Robert Schaag) and children Debbie, Mike and Jennifer, son Jeff Stuber, and granddaughter Reese MacDonald. Dr. Robert Stuber died at home, surrounded by loving family members on September 9, 2023. He succumbed to an aggressive cancer at age 84. Bob practiced and worked in the medical community in the town he loved for fifty years. His education included college and medical school at the University of Kansas, Internal Medicine Residency and a Cardiology Fellowship at Boston City Hospital, and a stint in the U.S. Air Force as a Captain and General Medical Officer. Dr. Stuber was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Geriatrics Board.Bob started solo practice in St. Joseph before establishing Specialists of Internal Medicine, a group which he led for thirty years. He retired, but then resumed his medical activity to become Co-Medical Director and eventually Medical Director at Heartland Hospital. Bob was past president of the Buchanan County Medical Society. He also served as Medical Director at the Public Health Department of St. Joseph and as Consulting Physician at Volker Rehab.For the past twenty years, Dr. Stuber has been a dedicated volunteer at the Social Welfare Clinic where he served as Board President. His devotion to the Welfare Clinic led to the creation of the C. Daniel Morton/Robert Stuber Annual Award in his honor. Recently, the Welfare Board decided to change the name from Social Welfare Clinic to: Stuber Health Center. There is also an annual Physician Recognition Award at Mosaic Hospital honoring Dr. Robert Stuber.Bob and Mary Helen loved family vacations at their cabin in Ontario, Canada where he demonstrated his expertise as a master angler. Together they created nature trails and landscaped beautiful gardens in Canada and on their property St. Joe. His other passions were tennis, racquetball, biking, and coaching girls’ basketball and softball. Bob had a big heart and was very generous and engaged with his extended family. He left this message to them on passing: “May all of you have full and satisfying lives. I hope that each of you will not become insensitive to the basic needs of all humans. It’s been fun being with all of you. You are good people.”Bob was a local expert on college football, especially Kansas University football. Everyone knew he would be at Memorial stadium in Lawrence or in front of the TV on Saturday afternoons. A sign outside the viewing room might have warned: “Beware Avid Fan Watching Football. Enter at your own risk.” In reality, Bob Stuber could have been employed as a broadcast color analyst.In later years Bob became very interested in politics and submitted many witty, sage political posts on Facebook or in letters to the editor of the local paper. He was a true champion of the poor and unfortunate of the world. This driving passion was expressed in all his actions and writings.Rock Chalk, Bob. Mayetta, Kansas - Vivacious and full of life, Vivian Kitchkumme-Gonzales left this world on September 2023, at the age of 99. She was born July 23, 1924, on the Potawatomi Reservation near Mayetta, Kansas, and brought joy to those around her from the very beginning.

Sons: Rudolph "Sah-gee-ka" Gonzales, and Daniel Mario "Na-gon-kouck" Gonzales

Vivian was a woman with an infectious zest for life and an unwavering love for her community. Her warm smile and contagious laughter brightened countless days, making her a beloved figure in Chicago, Southern California, Topeka, and Potawatomi Reservation. Whether she was working full-time until her retirement at age 75 volunteering, attending community events or selling her breakfast burritos, Vivian's dedication to helping and feeding others was an inspiration to all.

A passionate lover of nature, Vivian could often be found exploring the rolling hills surrounding Mayetta, enjoying the picturesque landscapes that Kansas had to offer. She nurtured with love and care in her own backyard, which she proudly called her Hummingbird Sanctuary.

Known for her radiant aura, Vivian was the epitome of happiness and hopefulness. Her friends and family would often seek her advice on spiritual and life matters.

Vivian had a heart full of love, and her family was her pride and joy. She leaves behind her four loving children, - Daughter Mary Campos &amp; husband Ruben, and their three children, John, Joseph, and Jennifer Dambrose. Sons - Luis Gonzales; Francis Gonzales &amp; wife Brenda, 5 children, Veronica Strange, Charles Gonzales, David Gonzales (Naomi), Amber Griffiths &amp; Angelo Gonzales (Gladys). Son - Rey Kitchkumme. The late Daniel "Na-gon-kouck" Gonzales', Daughter In-Law Peggy Gonzales and three children; Gina Roxas, Jessica Gonzales, and Daniel Gonzales Jr.

She is a devoted mother and cherished every moment spent with her children, 11-Grandchildren, 31-Great Grandchildren, and 3-Great-Great Grandchildren creating treasured memories that will forever be held close.

Vivian retired from the wardrobe department at Harrah's Prairie Band Casino at age 75. In her retirement she traveled visiting her children, went to annual Potawatomi Gatherings, Vatican City Italy, swam in the Dead Sea, and even rode a camel.

In her free time, Vivian enjoyed indulging in her favorite hobbies, which included sewing, baking mouthwatering treats, and sharing them with her friends and neighbors. Her famous burritos were highly sought after, and lucky recipients considered themselves truly blessed to taste a piece of her culinary magic.

Though Vivian's departure has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her, her spirit remains alive in our memories. She will forever be remembered for her vivacity, her kindness, and her ability to bring laughter and joy to even the darkest of days.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 on Saturday, September 16th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 301 E James St, Mayetta KS. &nbsp;Tt-ba-kwe will be held Saturday evening at the Dance Ground. &nbsp;Burial will be at a later date in the Komisnan Family Cemetery.

Keith worked at McCrea’s Grocery prior to moving to St. Joseph. There he was employed at various jobs, the most recent being at the Budget Inn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Buena (Bob); his brother, Jerry and Karan; nephew, Mike Snuffer and a great niece, Alaina (Bashor) Higgins.

Keith is survived by his sister, Loretta Jean Snuffer (Thomas); nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.

Mark Richard Gearhart was born on October 6, 1966 in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. He was one of five children born to Harvey R. and Margaret “Margie” Rose (O’Driscoll) Gearhart. Mark attended South Holt High School.

A service to celebrate his life will be on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 12:00 noon at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with words of comfort by Rev. Tony Carter. He will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will gather with friends for a time of visitation on Thursday evening, from 6-7:30 at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be left to the funeral home to assist with service expenses.&nbsp;

Ryan was born on April 3, 1995, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Lisa Renee Newson and Jason Roper. He was currently employed at Integrated Proteins as the first shift leader. He worked very hard and was proud of his job and the fact that he was able to work his way up to his current position. He spent lots of time tinkering with things and trying to fix stuff, even though he really never got anything fixed!&nbsp;

Ryan truly loved his family, his nieces and nephews for sure, but above them all his momma was his favorite; he was a big mommas boy! If he wasn’t at work or with his family, he was fishing, that boy loved to fish! He enjoyed playing basketball, always thinking he could beat up on his brothers, but that battle was never truly solved. Ryan’s favorite part of life was to make people smile and buying his friends lunch and drinks at the bar; he would spend his whole pay check on enjoying life with his friends!&nbsp;

He will be loved and missed by his family, including his mother, Lisa Newson; father, Jason Roper; his siblings, Anthony (Jennifer) Barnhart, Daniel (Sarah) Portenier, Derek Newson, Ambreana Newson, Devan Newson, Kelsey Roper; his loving grandma, Peggy Roper; Aunt, Jeannette Roper-Drake; uncle, Anthony Newson; and his nieces, nephews, cousins and too many friends to count. &nbsp;

Larry Adart Hahn, 87, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, at Missouri University Hospital, in Columbia, MO.

Larry was born July 31, 1936 in St. Joseph, at the Methodist Hospital, to Edward and Etta (Woodward) Hahn, of Bethany, MO, where the family farm is located. He graduated from High School in Bethany, MO in 1954. He attended Diesel Mechanics School in Kansas City, MO. He worked for Caterpillar in Chillicothe, MO. He joined the National Guard in 1955 in Albany, MO. In 1956 Larry went to work for MFA (Shelter) Insurance as an adjuster. He transferred to the National Guard in St. Joseph that same year. In 1960 he went to Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning Georgia. Larry married Donna Christina Cohrs on August 28th of 1960.

They moved to their present farm in May of 1961. Added to the family were 3 children: Susan, (Steve) Eales of Troy, MO, Tim, of the home and Chris, (Paula) of St. Joseph. Two grandchildren Brenna and Garette Eales of Troy, MO. " Adopted" daughter, Mitzi (Strand) Krause.

Larry worked for Shelter Ins, farmed and continued with the National Guard, attending many Army Schools, and raised to the rank of Lt Col. In 1981, while assigned to a post in Ft Gordon, Georgia he was asked to go on active duty, to Heidelberg, Germany at USAREUR HDQ, and 7th Army for eight months. Next Larry was assigned to Ft. Huachuca, AZ, with Donna, Tim and Chris in tow. Three years later to St Louis, and the Military Records Center, where he received promotion to full Colonel. While in St. Louis Larry received a BA degree from Columbia College. Three more years in Pittsburg, PA as an Inspector General for Guard Units in PA, and WVA.

Home again in late 1993, to retirement. He drove over the road semis for a short time, and worked for the city of St. Joseph Parks Dept. He and Donna enjoyed much traveling over the next 15 years.

What a Wonderful and Blessed life it has been. Memories galore. Some tears and lots of laughs. Now he is in heaven talking to everyone he sees. Can't get much better than that. He was a great guy and much loved.

Larry Adart Hahn, 87, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, at Missouri University Hospital, in Columbia, MO.Larry was born July 31, 1936 in St. Joseph, at the Methodist Hospital, to Edward and Etta (Woodward) Hahn, of Bethany, MO, where the family farm is located. He graduated from High School in Bethany, MO in 1954. He attended Diesel Mechanics School in Kansas City, MO. He worked for Caterpillar in Chillicothe, MO. He joined the National Guard in 1955 in Albany, MO. In 1956 Larry went to work for MFA (Shelter) Insurance as an adjuster. He transferred to the National Guard in St. Joseph that same year. In 1960 he went to Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning Georgia. Larry married Donna Christina Cohrs on August 28th of 1960.They moved to their present farm in May of 1961. Added to the family were 3 children: Susan, (Steve) Eales of Troy, MO, Tim, of the home and Chris, (Paula) of St. Joseph. Two grandchildren Brenna and Garette Eales of Troy, MO. Kimberly Kaye Barnhart was born in Livingston, Montana on June 17th 1976. Kimberly was one of 5 children born to Marvin and Donna Barnhart.

Kim lived in Livingston Montana, Chanute Kansas, Hiawatha Kansas, and most recently in Rose Hill, Kansas. She attended school in Ark City and graduated from Hiawatha High School. After graduation, Kim attended BCDS for daily activities and work. After moving to Rose Hill, Kansas Kim attended Paradigm for services.

Kim was well known for her unconditional love for everyone in her life, her free bird personality, and mostly for her singing; especially when signing with her sister Patty. &nbsp;Other activities that Kim enjoyed were riding her 3 wheeled bicycle around Powhattan, often with a passenger in the basket. She loved to sing Christmas carols, and dance. At Halloween time she loved handing candy out the trick-or-treaters. &nbsp;Kim often wanted to get “dolled-up” with makeup and perfume to tease her brothers that she was going out with the boys. She loved to attend family gatherings, and picnics that included food made for her by her family. Kim had a very special bond with her sister, Patricia. Kim and Patricia did everything together throughout their entire lives.

Survivors include the following: Brothers Tobey (Michelle) Barnhart of Rose Hill, Christopher (Tiffany) Barnhart of Valley Center, and Jeffery Barnhart of Newton. Bertha Louise (Schuman) Rohrer was reunited in Heaven with members of her beloved family on September 10th, 2023.

Born on December 25th, 1928, to Leonard and Maggie (Erb) Schuman, Bertha devoted her life to her family, faith and farm life. From the gifts of her kitchen, homemade noodles, fresh fried chicken, cherry cheesecake and angel food cake to a garden overflowing with produce and flowers, she was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great and great-great grandmother.

Bertha married Joseph Rohrer on February 18th, 1947. During their 68 Years of marriage, she assisted in farm life and the sales and service of memorial monuments.

Joe preceded her in death on May 7, 2015.

Mother to six children, Joseph Frederick (Sandy), Larry (Theresa), Mary Jane Harris, Lawrence (Becky), Therese (Deceased), Raymond (Lisa).

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Maggie, husband, Joseph, daughter Therese, grandchildren Steve, Aleena, Chance and Mike, great grandson Blake, brothers Ernest, Milton (Butch), Harold (Blackie) and Ralph (Jelly).

Bertha left the legacy of family with 6 children, 14 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren.

Bertha served her church and community as a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society, the Cordonnette’s Extension club, the American Legion Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary.

Services will include a Rosary lead by Louis Vertin Knights of Columbus #9532 at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, September 12th followed by visitation from 6-8 pm. at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena, Kansas. Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 13th at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Wathena, Kansas.

Burial will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wathena, Kansas following the service.

Arthur “Marvin” Gaither, 71, of Troy, Kansas passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023.

Marvin was born on January 9, 1952, to Arthur and Barbara “Jean” (Horner) Gaither.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Troy, Kansas, NHRA, and the EAA. Marvin was in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1971-1975, in Yuma, Arizona. He worked on A-4 F Skyhawk jets and was ranked as a Staff Sergeant. Marvin worked several jobs, including Service Technician at Brandt, and a Diesel Technician instructor at the Highland College Vo-Tech in Atchison, Ks. He was also a Supervisor for Doniphan County Road and Bridge Dist. #2.

Marvin married Linda Albers on April 1, 1972, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Bendena, Ks. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law Charles and Virginia Albers, brothers-in-law, David Dishon, Billy Smith, Gene Shelton, Alan Tryon and a sister-in-law, Martha Albers.

Additional survivors: Brothers, Kelvin Gaither, Troy, Kansas. Loren Gaither (Connie), Wathena, Kansas. Bryan Gaither, Fulton, Missouri. Keith Dingess Atlakson, age 92, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2023, with his daughter by his side.&nbsp;

Graveside service will be Thursday, September 14, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, where he and his wife, Dorothy, will be laid to rest together. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Atchison YMCA, Atchison Recreation or NEK Hospice in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. The family welcomes those joining them to wear K-State, AHS or BC attire.&nbsp;

Keith was born November 6, 1930, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Oscar Atlakson and Inez (McCue) Atlakson. He attended public schools in Atchison, graduating from AHS in 1948; he continued his education at Kansas State University.&nbsp;

Keith joined the United States Air Force on January 9, 1951 until his honorable discharge on November 5, 1954. While serving active duty, he and Dorothy Riley were married on July 14, 1953, in Erding, Germany. They shared nearly seventy years together until her passing on February 20, 2022.&nbsp;

Keith taught printing at the Vo-Tech College in Atchison until his retirement in 1995. Along with his “real” job, he started Atchison Fire Extinguisher in 1978, his one of many side jobs! He enjoyed his work but he was truly a sports addict, playing tennis, winning numerous city league championships, rec league basketball, YMCA volleyball team, rec softball, racketball and walleyball champs many times at the YMCA. After he perfected all of the sports in his youth, he took up golf as a member of Pineview Country Club, where he shot a hole-in-one in 1998. He was an avid fan of K-State, Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and Benedictine College. &nbsp;

He always stayed active in the community, serving as the YMCA Board President and President of the Atchison Youth Baseball Association. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon and Elder.&nbsp;

Left to carry on Keith’s legacy include his three children, his twins, Kevin Atlakson of Gladstone, MO, and Karen Atlakson Winney and her husband, Bob, of Overland Park, KS, and Mary Beth Atlakson Wohlgemuth and her husband, Kent, of Atchison, KS; six grandchildren, Sarah (Brandon) Johnson, Keith (Stacy) Wohlgemuth, Matt (Rachael) Wohlgemuth, Erin (Zach) Atlakson, Adam Winney , Andrew Winney; nine great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Cheryl Riley; three nieces and five nephews. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; brother and sister-in-law, Earl (Dorothy) Atlakson; a granddaughter, Stephanie Bartlett Drennon; brother-in-law, Dr. Ken Riley and his first wife, Merry Gay; and sister-in-law, Mary Hochuli and husband, Sheldon.

Kathleen Myers, 93, Atchison, Kansas, died Friday, September 8, 2023, at Amberwell Hospital.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 11, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Benedict’s Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be Monday, at 12:00 P.M. and visitation will follow until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Humane Society of Atchison.&nbsp;

Kathleen was born November 25, 1929, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of John and Maurgerita M. Razo. She attended St. Benedict’s Catholic School.&nbsp;

She and John Paul “Petey” Myers were married August 16, 1958, at St. Benedict’s Church. Mr. Myers preceded her in death on September 19, 2006.

Kathleen was a devout Catholic attending mass as often as she could. She enjoyed shopping and working on crosswords. She loved gardening and planting flowers; she canned many tomatoes over the years. Kathleen was always up for a trip to the casino. &nbsp;

Survivors include two sons, JP (Rita) Myers, Fair Grove, MO, Rick (Joyce) Myers, Troy, KS, two daughters, Patty (Daniel) Gibson, Indian Hills, CO, Mary Myers, Honolulu, HI, two grandchildren, Ian Myers, Sarah Garoutte, and three great grandchildren.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Vincent Razo, Johnny Razo, Louis Razo and a sister, Delores Boger.

Kathleen Myers, 93, Atchison, Kansas, died Friday, September 8, 2023, at Amberwell Hospital.&nbsp;Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 11, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at St. Benedict’s Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be Monday, at 12:00 P.M. and visitation will follow until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Humane Society of Atchison.&nbsp;Kathleen was born November 25, 1929, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of John and Maurgerita M. Razo. She attended St. Benedict’s Catholic School.&nbsp;She and John Paul “Petey” Myers were married August 16, 1958, at St. Benedict’s Church. Mr. Myers preceded her in death on September 19, 2006.Kathleen was a devout Catholic attending mass as often as she could. She enjoyed shopping and working on crosswords. She loved gardening and planting flowers; she canned many tomatoes over the years. Kathleen was always up for a trip to the casino. &nbsp;Survivors include two sons, JP (Rita) Myers, Fair Grove, MO, Rick (Joyce) Myers, Troy, KS, two daughters, Patty (Daniel) Gibson, Indian Hills, CO, Mary Myers, Honolulu, HI, two grandchildren, Ian Myers, Sarah Garoutte, and three great grandchildren.&nbsp;She was preceded in death by three brothers, Vincent Razo, Johnny Razo, Louis Razo and a sister, Delores Boger.<figure>

James Edwin Zishka, 80, of Dallas, TX, passed away September 5, 2023, at the Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, Mansfield, TX. James “Jim” was born on May 13, 1943, in Atchison, KS, the son of George and Leona (Shughart) Zishka. 

He grew up on the family farm in Nortonville, KS and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham, KS, and Emporia State University. Jim served in the United States Army, then began his twenty-six-year career with a telecommunication company until his retirement in 1994.Jim is survived by his wife Patti. He and Patti Curtiss were married on June 21, 1994, in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. 

Jim is also survived by, two sons, two daughters, ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters and one brother. 

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.

A private graveside service and burial will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Nortonville, Kansas, with Deacon Ronald Zishka officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton &amp; O’Trimble Funeral Home who has been entrusted with the arrangements. James Edwin 'Jim' Zishka 1943 - 2023

Lee Elvin Coats passed away on September 10, 2023, after a life of love, laughter, travel, and hard work.

Lee was the second of twelve children, born July 24, 1936, to Howard and Ellen (Flanagan) Coats. He resided in Andrew County for nearly his entire life.

With humble beginnings, he developed a strong work ethic at an early age. As a youth he worked on the family farm as well as for neighboring farmers, and the Bowen Chicken Hatchery in Union Star.

After graduating from USHS in 1954, he joined the US Air Force and served in Scotland working in intelligence. He would later say his job was so secret even he didn’t know what he was doing.

On August 7, 1960, he married Carol J. Heerlein of St. Joseph, MO. &nbsp;Together they raised four children.

He provided for his family working at Hy-Klas Dairy, Ferbert’s Lawn and Tree Services, and various construction companies before he retired from Ideker Inc. after 32 years in Laborers Local 579.

He was also a life long farmer raising cattle, pigs, and various crops. He was a member of Flag Springs Baptist Church and Savannah Masonic Lodge #71.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards with friends at the local tavern, and recounting childhood exploits.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years and his son, Jerry Coats.
