John Carter Miller, 64, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away September 8, 2024. He was born on February 22, 1960, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Phillip E. and Patricia J. (Mattox) Miller.

He married Tina M. Deever on October 15, 2019. He is survived by his children, Dustin Miller, Misty Spencer, John J. Miller (Andrea), Christina Vega (Robert), Tobias Deever (Vikki), and Andrea Miller (David); grandchildren, Kayton, Cameron, Ali, Johnathan, Maddison, Jameson, Rayden, Lilly, Tateum, Kane, Kace, Tobias Jr., Ellie, Adaline, Brett, Zachary, and Bryan; great-grandchild, Hope; sisters, Shirley Sexton and Debbie Bunkowski (Ed); numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Patricia, as well as his brothers, Larry, Carl, Phillip, and Rick.

John poured his heart into his life's work, leading All American Remodeling for over five decades. His dedication to craftsmanship and service was as much a part of his identity as his boundless passion for the great outdoors. An esteemed Scoutmaster, John instilled values and skills in countless young lives. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and was known for his love of the Fourth of July, often orchestrating grand displays that brought laughter and spectacle to his friends and family.

He was born November 24, 1968 in Oswego, New York to Albert and Cynthia (Payne) Labrozzi.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in history.

Scott married Stacy Atkinson on June 15, 2022. She survives of the home.

Scott enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being a family man.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mahayla; and grandson, Zayd.

Including animals. Turtles, rabbits, birds,&nbsp;squirrels, lizards, and snakes were some of his finds. He didn't get to keep them all, to his dismay.&nbsp;He was very smart and very goofy which made him so entertaining. He will truly be missed by all his family and&nbsp;friends. We love you, Kevin.

Shirley Diana (Smith) Hughes, 85, of Rock Port, Missouri passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa.

She was born October 7, 1938 in Atchison County, one of five girls of Charles Walter A. and Goldie Mae (Beam) Smith.

On December 21, 1957 she married Edward Lee Hughes, and they became parents of three sons and a daughter. Shirley was a lifelong farmer, and raised cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, geese, chickens, ducks, and even peacocks. She served as secretary of the Atchison County Co-Op.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; sons, Edward Lee "Scooter" Hughes II, David Allan Hughes, and Steven Charles Hughes; sister, Betty Chamberlain; brothers-in-law, Greg Chamberlain, Bill Harrington, Jack Scamman and Russell Hughes; and sister-in-law, Elaine Hughes.

Jacquinn Michelle “Shelly” Otto, 31, of Gower, MO passed away September 7, 2024.

She was born on January 7, 1993, to Joseph Thomas and April Dawn (Cockriel) Otto in Smithville, MO. Shelly grew up in Gower and graduated from East Buchanan High School in 2011.

On July 29, 2022, she was united in marriage to Austin Berry. Shelly enjoyed crafting, growing plants, loved animals and most of all she loved being a mom to Renly.

She was preceded in death by her mother April Otto; her grandparents Tom and Anna Marie Otto, Carla Gabriel and Susan Cockriel.

Michael L. Thomas, age 78, of Sunrise Beach, formerly of Camden Point, departed this life on September 7, 2024. He was a loving family man and did not know a stranger.

He was a very proud Naval Air veteran who always said it was his honor to serve. He was a fifty-year Mason and a Past Master of Camden Point Lodge #120. He was also an avid motorcycle enthusiast who just loved life.

His challenges with vision did not impact his love of life, only allowing him a deeper vision.

He leaves behind a wife, Suzanne of fifty-six years; son Scott and wife Mary; daughter Shelly; brother Larry; extended family and so many special friends.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 21st, at 11:00 a.m., at the West Wing Meeting Room, 125 Oddo Dr., Sunrise Beach, MO 65079. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Hospice Compassus or your favorite charity would be appreciated.

William Joseph Dorsey, Sr., age 85, of Atchison, KS, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on September 5, 2024.&nbsp;

Bill’s life will be celebrated on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. A visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery. Funeral Care has been entrusted to the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Bill was born on June 13, 1939, in Atchison, KS, the son of John Andrew Dorsey, Sr. and Isabelle Lorene (Marshall) Dorsey. He attended Atchison High School and graduated from Dekalb High School in 1958.&nbsp;

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1959 until 1963 as a boilerman on the USS Bradford and USS Coontz. He was recalled into active duty on his wedding day, to the Vietnam War and served in South Carolina on the USS Bordelon before being honorably discharged in June of 1965. During his tenure, he travelled to Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, The Philippines and the Vietnam River.&nbsp;

He did in fact go through with the wedding, he married Betty A. Truman, on September 19, 1964, and his passing is just two weeks short of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Bill and Betty have two sons, Scott Dorsey and Bill Dorsey, Jr. &nbsp;Additional survivors include his siblings, Dotty Dorsey Burnett, John Andrew Dorsey, II, and Gene Hazlett; and countless nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Charles Hazlett, James Dorsey, Mary Dorsey Sowers, and Ronald Dorsey.&nbsp;

Bill and Betty took their family on numerous vacations to American National Parks, including Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, Yosemite, Sequoia National Forest, Mount Rushmore, Grand Canyon, Estes Park, Pikes Peak, The Badlands, Blue Ridge Mountains and Waterton National Park in Canada. He thoroughly enjoyed hiking in the mountains with his family and seeing and photographing the countless animals and scenery. Bill and Betty also had the privilege of traveling to Chicago numerous times with their son, Scott, during his work trips. Bill took over as the scoutmaster for troop 93 when his sons were participating, and took the scouts to Camp Geiger and was an honorary warrior of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say in St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp;

Bill worked for Rockwell Foundry in Atchison, and Missouri Pacific Railroad in Falls City, NE, before joining Midwest Grain Products, for twenty-seven years until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed people, so he spent a few years as a greeter at Wal-Mart in retirement.&nbsp;

He had incredible strength and character and would never give up on anything his whole life. Although he may have grown up very poor, that led to him being humble of heart and gentle of spirit. He enjoyed working outside in his gardens and trees, reading his bible, working on crossword puzzles, watching the sunrise and his old western movies, especially the Virginian. He sang in the choir at the First Christian church for many years and got a kick out of playing practical jokes on people, especially on April Fool’s Day.&nbsp;

William Joseph Dorsey, Sr. 1939 - 2024

Julia Ann Clem, 86, of Atchison, Kansas passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024, after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 am, Monday, September 16, 2024, at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison, with Father Meinrad Miller, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The parish rosary will be recited on Sunday, September 15 at 4:30 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, with visitation to follow until 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mount Saint Scholastica, St. Benedict’s school, or the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.

Julia was born on Halloween, October 31, 1937, in Atchison, Kansas to Albert and Helen (Clark) Handke. She attended rural grade school and St. Benedict’s Grade School and graduated from the Mount Saint Scholastica Academy in 1954. She received a B.A. in Mathematics from Mount Saint Scholastica College in 1968 and an M.S. in Technical Teacher Education from Pittsburg State University in 1985.

She married Raymond Albert Clem on June 15, 1957, at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison. They were married 61 years until his death in 2019. She was a life-long Catholic and became a Benedictine Oblate of Mount St Scholastica Monastery in 2015.

As a wife and mother, she was always ready to lead the family activities, traveling to Michael’s running events, shuttling Mary Lynn to 4-H activities and joining Raymond on trips from coast to coast. Later in life, she showed her family and friends how to be a loving caregiver to Raymond. Julia’s contributions to her community were numerous and varied, with a focus on education and community support. She loved mathematics and taught vocational students at Northeast KS Vocational School for many years. She shared her talents by serving on the Community Corrections Advisory Board, 1st Judicial District Nominating Commission, Atchison Historical Society, and numerous volunteer roles.

Survivors include her sister Kathleen (George) Tyson, Scottsdale, AZ; her daughter, Mary Lynn (Ross) Ray, Winchester, KS; her son, Michael (Deborah) Clem, Los Gatos, CA; two grandchildren, Andrew (Lauren) Clem and Matthew Clem; two step-grandchildren, Carl Ray and Jodi Davis; her great-granddaughter Colbie Julia Clem; five step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

It is reported that the heavenly reunion of loved ones was quite the affair. Husband Raymond, parents Helen and Albert, brother Owen Handke, children Cathy and Andy were all lovingly gathered for the homecoming celebration. Julia Ann Clem, 86, of Atchison, Kansas passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024, after a long battle with ovarian cancer.Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 am, Monday, September 16, 2024, at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison, with Father Meinrad Miller, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The parish rosary will be recited on Sunday, September 15 at 4:30 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, with visitation to follow until 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Mount Saint Scholastica, St. Benedict’s school, or the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.Julia was born on Halloween, October 31, 1937, in Atchison, Kansas to Albert and Helen (Clark) Handke. She attended rural grade school and St. Benedict’s Grade School and graduated from the Mount Saint Scholastica Academy in 1954. She received a B.A. in Mathematics from Mount Saint Scholastica College in 1968 and an M.S. in Technical Teacher Education from Pittsburg State University in 1985.She married Raymond Albert Clem on June 15, 1957, at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison. They were married 61 years until his death in 2019. She was a life-long Catholic and became a Benedictine Oblate of Mount St Scholastica Monastery in 2015.As a wife and mother, she was always ready to lead the family activities, traveling to Michael’s running events, shuttling Mary Lynn to 4-H activities and joining Raymond on trips from coast to coast. Later in life, she showed her family and friends how to be a loving caregiver to Raymond. Julia’s contributions to her community were numerous and varied, with a focus on education and community support. She loved mathematics and taught vocational students at Northeast KS Vocational School for many years. She shared her talents by serving on the Community Corrections Advisory Board, 1st Judicial District Nominating Commission, Atchison Historical Society, and numerous volunteer roles.Survivors include her sister Kathleen (George) Tyson, Scottsdale, AZ; her daughter, Mary Lynn (Ross) Ray, Winchester, KS; her son, Michael (Deborah) Clem, Los Gatos, CA; two grandchildren, Andrew (Lauren) Clem and Matthew Clem; two step-grandchildren, Carl Ray and Jodi Davis; her great-granddaughter Colbie Julia Clem; five step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.It is reported that the heavenly reunion of loved ones was quite the affair. William Joel Wright, 87, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2024. Hewas born in a farm home about 1 mile N/E of Perrin, Missouri to Joel Clyde (“Mick”) and GenevaReva (Golden) Wright. 

It was the Great Depression and life was hard on the farm. His parents told the story that he was the “only” thing they produced that year on the farm. Those who knew and loved him, or who worked with him through the years, counted Bill as a role model and great presence in their lives.

Bill attended a one-room schoolhouse, the Martin School, in rural Clinton County and then high school in Plattsburg, Missouri, graduating in 1955. He attended U.S. Trades School in Kansas City, training for auto mechanic, graduating in May 1956 and working for various auto dealerships/parts supply stores. He found his calling, though, when he joined the Missouri Air National Guard on Feb. 14, 1958, of which he was a member for the next 39 years.

Following his Basic Military Training for the Reserves, he was a self-employed farmer from 1958to 1962, when he was offered full-time employment and began his Missouri Air National Guard Military Technician Training. At that time, his military assignment was for Flight Engineer (1962-69), for which he also trained.

In the Military Technician area, Bill began as a Flight Line Mechanic, then worked his way up through Aircraft Crew Chief, Quality Assurance Inspector, and various supervisory roles, becoming Field Maintenance Superintendent and then Base Environmental Manager. Through hard work Bill achieved the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, the highest rank for enlisted personnel.

Following retirement he became a real estate broker-salesperson with Coldwell Banker General Properties in St. Joseph. In his spare time, Bill started playing the guitar and also took harmonica lessons. Bill’s greatest success in life was the loving family relationships that he developed and nurtured over the years. On January 30, 1965 he married Mary Catherine Grace. Their favorite times were spent raising their four children, and spending time with their ten grandchildren. 

Bill and Mary shared a love of travel, taking their kids on many memorable family vacations. Mary passed away in 2013, a month prior to their 49th wedding anniversary.

A few years later, Bill was fortunate to meet and marry Marjorie “Marji” O’Neal Pettry on April16, 2016, with whom he enjoyed 8 years of marriage. In addition to their strong faith in God, they shared a love of family. Some of their favorite pastimes included dancing, fishing, and watching Chiefs games. Marji provided loving care when Bill received cancer treatment in 2023and more again in the last weeks of his life. Bill is survived by Marji, his children and grandchildren: Jennifer (Gary) – Jacob, Daniel, Toby; Kevin (Kathryn) – Rebecca, Jacquelyn; Chris (Carley) – Sabrina, Katie, Colin; and Angela –Oliver, Alexis. Also, brothers Sam (Vivian) and Mike (Mary) and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. Bill’s faith was very important to him and he was a lifelong Catholic, serving in various roles at St. Francis Xavier Church, of which he was a member since 1965.

Donald Walter Hanson, Sr., 80, Savannah, MO, passed from this life on September 7, 2024 at Mosaic Life Care.

Donald was born on February 15, 1944 to Donald J. Hanson and Willma Lee (Pike) Hanson. On August 6, 1977 he and Linda Irene Gross were united in marriage. &nbsp;

Don was full of life, he was always up for an adventure, and told everyone how “good his health was,” Don was getting ready for a trip with his son-in-law to visit a bunch of National parks all over the United States. &nbsp;He loved to travel all over visiting Las Vegas multiple times. He enjoyed his bi-weekly trips with his grandson, Kyle, talking life and crazy adventures the two wanted to take. He was a family man with spending lots of time with his daughter, son-in-law, grandson, and his family. He enjoyed his weekly meals and outings with family and friends. He was always cracking jokes and trying to see just how far he could take surprising people. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and collecting multiple different things.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Linda Groce Hanson; his parents, Donald J. and Willma Lee Hanson, and his brother, Roger (Sylvia) Hanson.

He is survived by his daughter, Leanne Hallowell; his son-in-law, Ron Hallowell; daughter, Donna L. Fischer; sons, Donald W. Hanson, Jr, and James C. Hanson: his grandkids, Michelle Gay, Michael Gay, Derrick &nbsp;(Maria) Spalding, and Kyle (Chantal) Hallowell, along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. &nbsp;Special thank you to Erik and Tina Cook for always watching out and welcoming Donald in their lives.

He was born October 19, 1963, to Donald Sr. and Marion (Hamilton) Briggs in Knoxville, Iowa.

He was a member of the United States Army.

Terry enjoyed being out in nature, whether he was hunting, fishing or mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed woodworking and video games.

Terry worked alongside his family at Briggs Drywall for fifteen years.

Steve graduated from Sherman E Burrows High School in California, and he is a Navy veteran. He worked at Kawasaki for 15 years. Steve enjoyed fishing and riding his motorcycle. 

Steve was preceded in death by his father, and brother, Darrell Cohen. 

Survivors include: his mother, Barbara Jean Jackson, wife, Jamie Cohen, sons, Caleb (Iris) Cohen of Maryville, MO, and Nathan Cohen, daughters, Erica Carreño, Aubrie Cohen, and Elizabeth Williams, and numerous grandchildren.

Shirley Simmons 1943 - 2024

Thomas A. Morris, 79, of Platte City, MO, passed away on September 4, 2024. Tom was born on May 4, 1945, in Kansas City, MO to Thomas Asbury Morris II and Mary Lorraine (Bancks) Morris. He served with distinction in the U.S. Navy for six years and was a Vietnam War veteran. He continued his service in the Missouri Air National Guard for 24 years, participating in Desert Storm.

Tom was a Senior Master Sergeant, a rank that reflects his dedication and leadership throughout his military career. He was an alumnus of Rockhurst High School and furthered his education at Rockhurst College and Missouri Western State College.

A man of faith, Tom grew up attending St. Louis Catholic Church in Kansas City and was a member of Twelve Apostles Catholic Church in Platte City. His early years as an altar boy marked the beginning of a commitment to God.

As a youth, Tom was deeply involved in the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and later serving as a counselor at Osceola Boy Scout Camp Wigwam. He was also a proud member of the tribe of Mic-O-Say, an honor society that recognized Scout camping traditions.

Tom was known for his boisterous personality and generous spirit. Whether sharing jokes, hosting gatherings, playing cards with friends, volunteering at the food pantry, or helping family or friends in need, his personality shone through. These cherished qualities live on through his daughters. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Tom enjoyed playing golf and watching the Royals and Chiefs. If the tightness of a hug, could convey love, one could never doubt how much Tom loved them.

Tom married Debbie Aderton on March 21, 1997 at Shakespeare Chateau in St. Joseph, MO. They lived in St. Joseph until 2001 when they moved to Platte City.

He cherished his children and warmly welcomed their spouses into his big, beautiful, blended family. He adored each grandbaby as they arrived, held them for hours as babes, loved and spoiled them as they grew and was proud of them as students, athletes and dancers. He delighted in showing others his wallet of photos of his children and grandchildren at every opportunity.

Nothing made him happier than to have the whole group for a family gathering, and he was always eager to prepare his renowned biscuits and gravy for Christmas brunch. Another special tradition was the annual New Year’s Eve party and sleepover for the grandkids. For the first time, all eleven attended to ring in 2024.

Thomas A. Morris, 79, of Platte City, MO, passed away on September 4, 2024. Tom was born on May 4, 1945, in Kansas City, MO to Thomas Asbury Morris II and Mary Lorraine (Bancks) Morris. He served with distinction in the U.S. Navy for six years and was a Vietnam War veteran. He continued his service in the Missouri Air National Guard for 24 years, participating in Desert Storm.Tom was a Senior Master Sergeant, a rank that reflects his dedication and leadership throughout his military career. He was an alumnus of Rockhurst High School and furthered his education at Rockhurst College and Missouri Western State College.A man of faith, Tom grew up attending St. Louis Catholic Church in Kansas City and was a member of Twelve Apostles Catholic Church in Platte City. His early years as an altar boy marked the beginning of a commitment to God.As a youth, Tom was deeply involved in the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and later serving as a counselor at Osceola Boy Scout Camp Wigwam. He was also a proud member of the tribe of Mic-O-Say, an honor society that recognized Scout camping traditions.Tom was known for his boisterous personality and generous spirit. Whether sharing jokes, hosting gatherings, playing cards with friends, volunteering at the food pantry, or helping family or friends in need, his personality shone through. These cherished qualities live on through his daughters. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Tom enjoyed playing golf and watching the Royals and Chiefs. If the tightness of a hug, could convey love, one could never doubt how much Tom loved them.Tom married Debbie Aderton on March 21, 1997 at Shakespeare Chateau in St. Joseph, MO. They lived in St. Joseph until 2001 when they moved to Platte City.He cherished his children and warmly welcomed their spouses into his big, beautiful, blended family. He adored each grandbaby as they arrived, held them for hours as babes, loved and spoiled them as they grew and was proud of them as students, athletes and dancers. He delighted in showing others his wallet of photos of his children and grandchildren at every opportunity.Nothing made him happier than to have the whole group for a family gathering, and he was always eager to prepare his renowned biscuits and gravy for Christmas brunch. Another special tradition was the annual New Year’s Eve party and sleepover for the grandkids. Virginia Rae Stamper, also known as Sissy, was born on October 2, 1945 in Leavenworth Kansas to Clarence (Monk) and Rebecca (Snookie) Stamper (Williams).

Virginia was raised in Dearborn, MO and attended North Platte High School. She spent the biggest part of her life in Dearborn in her childhood home. In her free time, Virginia loved to bowl and play cards with friends and family. Every holiday she had her house decked out in decorations. Virginia loved caring for her family and others. She spent several years working for numerous nursing homes throughout St. Joseph and Kansas City, MO.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Rebecca, her brother Richard Franklin, and her son Buddy Robert Coffman.

Joyce Ann (Reece) Roberts, 89, of Rea, MO, went to her heavenly home on September 5, 2024. &nbsp;

She was born on August 20, 1935 to John and Ura (Courtney) Reece. Joyce married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Roberts, on February 20, 1955 and together they made their home on the farm. Born into this union were son Randy (Linda) Roberts and daughter Deann (Bill) Schellhorn. &nbsp;Her life was centered around their family that she loved so much.&nbsp;

Joyce enjoyed hosting family dinners, complete with homemade ice cream, for all the family including brothers’ and sisters’ families as well. She loved going to all the kids and grandkids activities and did so until her health would no longer allow it. Bob and Joyce celebrated 65 years of marriage before Bob’s death in 2020.&nbsp;

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents; brothers George, David, Jay, Glenn and Frank Reece; sisters Geraldine Trapp, Ernestine Donaly, Dorothy Nicholas, and infant sister Eddie Lea Reece. &nbsp;

Joyce is survived by her son Randy (Linda) Roberts and daughter Deann (Bill) Schellhorn; Grandchildren Kurt (Darcy) Roberts, Kelly (Tim) Dolan, Ryan (Amy) Schellhorn, Scott (Nicole) Schellhorn, Troy (Megan) Schellhorn; 13 great-grandchildren, Bryson, Kaylee, Josiah, Nikolus, Luke, Isaak, Claire, Logan, Kate, Deklan, Mason, Mylz, and Michael; and several nieces and nephews.

Rebecca S, Allen, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

She was born August 13, 1938 in Nevada, Missouri to Ralph and Rebecca (Parr) Cook.

After retiring from her longtime job at Wyeth Hardware, Rebecca moved to Branson, Missouri, where she worked in gift shops. She loved to be out and among people. She also loved to travel.

Rebecca later returned to St. Joseph, where she made many new friends at Westchester Village.

She was a loving, giving mother and grandmother known as “GiGi” to her grandkids, who enjoyed being with her family and cooking and baking for them. She loved to play cards but took it very seriously and usually won.

More recently, Rebecca fought a hard, four-year battle with cancer but would not give up. Her doctors called her “Superwoman.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Carla Kay Wilkerson; son-in-law, Mike Hart; and siblings, Doris Ross, Kay Wawrzyniak, and Alice Phillips.

Survivors include her children, Mark Wilkerson (Cindy), Lois Wilkerson (Marc Buis), and Kristen Hart; grandchildren, Kyle, Amanda, Heather, Haley, and Michael; eight great-grandchildren; numerous other extended family members and friends; and her beloved dog, Bella.

Velma Faye (Miller) Brandt, 98, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

She was born October 4, 1925 in Easton, Missouri to Clarence H. and Faye (Kessler) Miller. She grew up in Easton, then the family moved to Kansas City, Kansas, where Velma graduated from Ward High School. The family then returned to St. Joseph where she resided for the rest of her life.

She was employed at the Gas Service Company.

Velma married Louie Brandt on June 18, 1949. She was dedicated to caring for and loving her family and friends.

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, St. Anne’s Altar Society, and the St. Joseph PTA. She received the Paul Harris Award from the East Side Rotary Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence H. and Faye Miller; sisters, Annabelle Tuck and Edna Doolan; brothers, Wilbur “Tony” Miller and Richard Miller; husband, Louie Brandt; and grandson, Jacob Jarozewski.

Survivors include her daughters, Joyce (Steve) Pankiewicz, Barbara (Martin) Jarozewski, and Linda (James) Blair; brother, Clarence (Elizabeth) Miller; grandchildren, Crystal, Andrew, Sarah, Christopher, Ryan, and Anna; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Scooter Foster, who left this world on September 2, 2024, at his beloved farm surrounded by loved ones. Born on August 27, 1962, in Kansas City, MO. Scooter lived a life full of love, dedication, and hard work. His journey touched the lives of many, creating an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

Scooter was the son of the late legendary Dick Foster and Susan Link (Wayne Bremer), and his family roots remained an integral part of his life. He was preceded in death by his father Coach Dick Foster, mother Susan Link, stepfather Wayne Bremer, sister “Dubbie” Debbie Grame, and brother Coach Skipper Foster. 

His memory will continue to be cherished by his loving wife, Shell Foster, his devoted daughter Tootsie (Linsey Loftin (Shane), and his son Patcher (Seth Foster). Scooter was the proud grandfather of Harleigh and Kota Triplett as well as Tucker and Finley Foster, who will forever remember the joy he brought into their lives. He loved taking all the kids to the Zoo, Silver Dollar City, pumpkin patches, and the annual county fair. He loved long days on the farm doing chores with the kids running wild and playing in the creek, smoking meat with his “Best Buddy” Shane Loftin, and spending as much time “making memories” with family as he possibly could!

Scooter's family extended beyond his immediate kin, including his Father and Mother-in-law Mike and Pat Kelley, sisters Dinah Westervelt (Glen), DeAnn Trave', and Gay Foster his brothers Jon Bremer (Amie), Melvin Grame, and Mike Warren, countless nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends whom he considered family.

Scooter's educational journey saw him attend Platte County High School, where he not only excelled academically but also shone as the center #62 for the Platte County Pirates football team. His school years were marked by camaraderie and spirit, earning him a place among the infamous "bootheads”, creating friendships that lasted an entire lifetime.

After high school, Scooter worked alongside his Uncle Bill Foster before embarking on his entrepreneurial journey opening his own company Scooter’s Custom Tile. His exceptional craftsmanship and relentless hard work ensured his success, and he thrived in his business for many years. Many people recognized him from miles away with his infamous work van. Scooter had a distinct appearance, always in a do-rag, jeans, a Harley (or Fair) shirt, and work boots making him a beloved figure in the community. His presence was a symbol of hard work, loyalty, love, and passion. In the fall of 2021, Scooter retired from the tile business and took on a new role at The Platte County Courthouse, where he continued to make a positive impact on the community. He cultivated friendships that will last his family a lifetime.

Scooter's love story with his high school sweetheart, Shell Kelley, is one for the books, a true real-life love story. It began in their early teenage years, culminating in their wedding on March 10, 1983. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, raising two wonderful children who became the light of their lives. They lived in Tracy, Mo until the flood of 93’ when they bought a farm just outside of Edgerton Mo. There they spent many years remodeling and hosting huge celebrations for all their friends and family. In the Summer of 2001, Scooter found “the perfect land” for his Shelley. He then began to build her dream home by hand. Together they created “the perfect farm”. He spent most of his later years working on his land and woodworking in his shop. He loved watching “hillbilly tv” and reminiscing on cold nights in the shop with his beloved son Patcher (Seth Foster). Scooter's love for his farm was evident in everything he did. He found immense joy in working the land and building for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved his garden and all the flowers he planted. He brought his wife and daughter fresh-cut flowers, buckets of fresh vegetables, and fresh eggs from his chickens every single week.

Scooter was an avid Harley rider. He said it was the only time he ever really felt completely free, on the open road with nowhere to be. He spent many years traveling to Sturgis South Dakota and Eureka Springs Arkansas for bike week with his brother Mikey Warren and good buddy Pat Kelley.

His dedication to his community was equally unwavering, as he volunteered every spare moment to The Platte County Fair, embodying the spirit of service. He worked alongside a group of people there that became his family. He was a lifelong member of the fair board and just loved making the fair “the best one yet” every year! He looked forward to it all year. He spent many long hours rebuilding the fairgrounds for future generations with his best friend Jimmy Thatcher.

He loved long days on the farm doing chores with the kids running wild and playing in the creek, smoking meat with his “Best Buddy” Shane Loftin, and spending as much time “making memories” with family as he possibly could!Scooter's family extended beyond his immediate kin, including his Father and Mother-in-law Mike and Pat Kelley, sisters Dinah Westervelt (Glen), DeAnn Trave', and Gay Foster his brothers Jon Bremer (Amie), Melvin Grame, and Mike Warren, countless nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends whom he considered family.Scooter's educational journey saw him attend Platte County High School, where he not only excelled academically but also shone as the center #62 for the Platte County Pirates football team. His school years were marked by camaraderie and spirit, earning him a place among the infamous "bootheads”, creating friendships that lasted an entire lifetime.After high school, Scooter worked alongside his Uncle Bill Foster before embarking on his entrepreneurial journey opening his own company Scooter’s Custom Tile. His exceptional craftsmanship and relentless hard work ensured his success, and he thrived in his business for many years. Many people recognized him from miles away with his infamous work van. Scooter had a distinct appearance, always in a do-rag, jeans, a Harley (or Fair) shirt, and work boots making him a beloved figure in the community. His presence was a symbol of hard work, loyalty, love, and passion. In the fall of 2021, Scooter retired from the tile business and took on a new role at The Platte County Courthouse, where he continued to make a positive impact on the community. He cultivated friendships that will last his family a lifetime.Scooter's love story with his high school sweetheart, Shell Kelley, is one for the books, a true real-life love story. It began in their early teenage years, culminating in their wedding on March 10, 1983. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, raising two wonderful children who became the light of their lives. They lived in Tracy, Mo until the flood of 93’ when they bought a farm just outside of Edgerton Mo. There they spent many years remodeling and hosting huge celebrations for all their friends and family. In the Summer of 2001, Scooter found “the perfect land” for his Shelley. He then began to build her dream home by hand. Together they created “the perfect farm”. He spent most of his later years working on his land and woodworking in his shop. He loved watching “hillbilly tv” and reminiscing on cold nights in the shop with his beloved son Patcher (Seth Foster). Scooter's love for his farm was evident in everything he did. He found immense joy in working the land and building for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved his garden and all the flowers he planted. He brought his wife and daughter fresh-cut flowers, buckets of fresh vegetables, and fresh eggs from his chickens every single week.Scooter was an avid Harley rider. He said it was the only time he ever really felt completely free, on the open road with nowhere to be. He spent many years traveling to Sturgis South Dakota and Eureka Springs Arkansas for bike week with his brother Mikey Warren and good buddy Pat Kelley.His dedication to his community was equally unwavering, as he volunteered every spare moment to The Platte County Fair, embodying the spirit of service. He worked alongside a group of people there that became his family. He was a lifelong member of the fair board and just loved making the fair “the best one yet” every year! He looked forward to it all year. He spent many long hours rebuilding the fairgrounds for future generations with his best friend Jimmy Thatcher.In honor of Scooter's memory, donations can be made to the Platte County Fair Association, an organization very close and dear to his heart.A celebration of life will be held at The Dirty Shame Saloon in the fall of 2025 to celebrate Scooter's life, where family and friends will gather to share memories, dance, and rejoice. Though Scooter may no longer be with us, his spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched and all the memories he created.The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the entire staff at The Kansas Cancer Center, hospice nurses, and their dear friend Kristina Dunn for their unwavering support and care during this challenging time.Rest in peace, Scooter “boothead” Foster.
