He married Phyllis E. Andrus in St. Joseph, MO on June 23, 1956 and she survives of the home. &nbsp;

He was a machinist for Continental Can for many years. He was a hard-working country boy that always needed something to do. He enjoyed everything gardening and always was learning. He was a company Clerk in the US Army. He was the best father and husband anyone could ask for. &nbsp;

Dolores "Dee" Betts-Karr 88 of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2025 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 9, 1936 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Goldie and Damaso Velazquez. 

She graduated from St. James Catholic School and the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School, and she attended 2 years at the St. Joseph Junior College. She worked in the banking industry as a teller for the First Stock Yards Bank, and the First Bank of Missouri. She was very active in the community, serving as two-time President of the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce, two-time President of St. James Altar Society, she was the Queen of the Jesse Jane Red Hat Society, a member of the Sparta Club, served as the PTA President of St, James School, and worked many funeral dinners for the St. Altar Society. Dee liked to read books and belonged to a book club at the library, and she loved to dance. She was a member of &nbsp;the St. James Catholic Church and the St. James Altar Society. 

Dolores was preceded in death by husband, Robert "Bob" Betts, Sr. in 2016, her parents, all her siblings: David Velazquez, Virginia Hepburn-Sandgren, Mary Nikes-Barnett, Josephine Flach-Asbell, Frank Velazquez, and her son in law, Larry Wells.

Arlene Connie Castanada, 73, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2025 at her home surrounded by family. She was born February 14, 1952 in Osceola, MO, daughter of Jannie Lou and Dick H. Elliott. 

She graduated from Osceola High School, Central Missouri State University, and the University of Missouri, Columbia with a Masters in Social Work. Arlene married John Castanada on May 2, 1981 and he survives of the home. Social work was her passion; working at the St. Joseph Sisters Hospital, Heartland Hospital, St. Lukes Hospital Transplant Department, and  DaVita Dialysis, all those years traveling to Kansas City, Chillicothe, Cameron, and Wyandotte County without a complaint. In May of 1987 she was awarded the National Hospital Social Worker Director of the Year. She was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church. She loved spending time with her pets, creating art, eating dessert before dinner, watching Hallmark movies, going on family trips, and watching her girls play sports. 

Arlene was preceded in death by father, Dick (Margie) Elliott, mother, Jannie (Russ) See, her fur babies; Malia, Taco, and Baer. 

Survivors include husband, John Castanada, daughters; Elena, Jannie (Bree), and Alicia Castanada, stepdaughter, Shellee Castanada, granddaughter, Daisy Castanada, sister, Elaine (Dan) Wilson, special niece, Ruschell and children, fur babies; Gracie, Pake, Winnie, Lily, and Lupe.

Rita Sarris, 96, passed away, Sunday, March 2nd, 2025.

She was born August 17th, 1928 to Guy and Margie (Wilmot) Cianciolo in St. Joseph, Missouri and lived here most of her life.

Rita graduated from the Sacred Heart Convent and Missouri Western State University. From 1949 through 1953 she was a lab technician at Huron Road Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio and Missouri Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph. In 1970 she became a teacher in the St. Joseph School District at Bode Middle School, retiring in 1985.

In 1953 Rita married Gus Sarris. They had three children.&nbsp;

Rita is survived by two daughters, Tina and Becky, and one son. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Jay, Taira, and Breaunna, and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gus, brother Anthony Cianciolo and sisters Margie Francis and Connie Sullivan.

Rita was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. A family graveside service will be held.

John Thomas Withrow, 75, Savannah, Missouri; passed away Friday, February 28, 2025, at the Cameron Veterans Home, Cameron, Missouri.

John was born on July 20, 1949 in Atchison, Kansas to the late William Isaac and Geneva Rose (Wyatt) Withrow. He was a graduate of Platte City High School.

Mr. Withrow proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

John worked as a truck driver for Rockwell, CRST and Crete Carrier for over thirty-five years, retiring in 2007. &nbsp;

John married Patsy Huddleston on November 11, 1972. They celebrated fifty-two years of marriage. She survives him of the home.

John loved his family dearly and had a special attachment to his basset hound, Wendy. He was affiliated with the Family Worship Center in Country Club Village. John loved fishing and trucking.

Additional survivors include his son, Brian Short; daughter Terri Swartz (Javan); sister, Sharon Withrowand nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Kathy Nigro.

Joshua Blair AuRum Snyder passed away unexpectedly on February 28, 2025, in Chico, California, due to fentanyl poisoning. He was born on June 11, 1981, in Atchison, Kansas, to Blair G. and Kathy H. Snyder.

Joshua was a gifted and creative soul. A dedicated student, he had a passion for music, composing his own pieces and playing the guitar. His artistic talent shone through his intricate pencil drawings. He was also a skilled chef, known for his work at Saint Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.

A man of deep faith, Joshua was a devoted follower of Christ, often sharing his beliefs and offering encouragement to those he met on the streets of California. He had a love for sports, proudly cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Royals.

Joshua is preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles R. and Shirley L. Snyder of Atchison, Kansas. He is survived by his parents, Blair G. and Kathy H. Snyder of Hewitt, Texas; his children, Caleb Snyder and Baylee Snyder; and his granddaughter, Ariadne. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will cherish his memory.

Joshua’s body will be cremated and returned home to his family. A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date.

Ricky Allen Butler, 64, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully in his sleep Monday, February 24, 2025, with his sister Rita by his side. He was met by his parents; cousin Emilio, nephew Timothy; and best friend Ace.

He was born on October 30, 1960, to Oran and Beverly (Pinzino) Butler, in Smithville, Missouri.

Ricky, a proud graduate from Oak Park High School, channeled his vision into reality by being self-employed and passionately working towards opening his own thrift shop, a testament to his resourcefulness and hard work. His penchant for “treasure hunting” through dumpster diving was not just a pastime, but a reflection of his belief that value can be found in the most unexpected places.

His memory will be cherished by his children, Blake Butler (Christina), Hailey Butler, Nickole Hershley (Brandon) and Dominic Butler; grandchildren, Kai Butler and Ariella Davenport; siblings, Rita Reyes, Tina Butler, Gina Dagget, and Nicky Butler; as well as by extended family and friends who will carry forward his memory with love.

Carl E. Reid, 84, of Hiawatha, died early February 27, 2025 at Maple Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hiawatha.

Carl, the son of Lee Robert and Meryl Ruth Cantor, was born at the Horton Hospital, December 8, 1940. Carl lived with his parents and brother Paul, near Mercier where he attended Hickory Grove Country School. The family moved to Hiawatha in 1948 where Carl graduated from Hiawatha High School with class of 1961.

He joined the U.S. Army where he served in Germany and France from 1962 until 1965, the Vietnam era. Upon his return home, Carl started work at the Whiting Cheese Factory at Horton for 10 years until it closed prior to working at Monark Egg Plant in Hiawatha 11 years until it closed. He opened his own lawn and yard care business which at one time, was taking care of over 40 lawns. He also was a ‘handyman’ for his elderly cousins Dora Slavin and her sister Effie Edde Chapman at 301 S 6th St., Hiawatha, whom he ate dinner with for over 20 years. Carl was a devoted assistance caretaker for his cousin Dora in her home.

Carl was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Hiawatha. He was always ready and willing to serve when needed, especially in driving the Church taxi on Sundays. Carl in recent years had been attending the Eternal Hope Worship Center. He enjoyed working on mechanical items, solving puzzles, reading, volunteering, helping when needed, and chatting with friends on the phone.

&nbsp;Local survivors include a nephew Arthur Wenger (Martha), their son Tim and his family, with many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; half sister Mary Lee Kneisel, brother Paul Reid, half brothers: Clarence Reid, Jack Cantor, cousins Effie Chapman, Dora Slavin, and nephews: Howard Wenger, Vernon Wenger and niece Dian Wenger.

Services for Carl are planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, with Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiating. Inurnment at a later date at Wheatland Cemetery, west of Horton.

Military honors a courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Linda was a perfect farmer’s wife. She excelled in everything that such a life demands, whether it was her amazing cooking, being a seamstress, or gardening and canning, Linda did it all! Even driving the tractor, and dressing chickens. The biggest thing in her life however, was being a mother.

Bradley Dean Van Zee, 66, of Smithville, MO, formerly of Newton, IA passed away peacefully at home after a heroic battle with cancer on February 26, 2025.

He was born on April 26, 1958, to Edwin Dean and Adrena (Meyerink) Van Zee in Rapid City, SD. Brad grew up in Newton, IA, and in 1976 he graduated from high school. After graduation, Brad spent time out west where he held various jobs and enjoyed fishing, canoeing, hiking and being in nature. Later, he returned to Newton where he began working with the Parks Department for the City and later transferred to the Police Department where he was a Police Identification Technician. After 28 years of dedicated and loyal service to the citizens of Newton and the Newton Police Department, Brad retired in 2020.

On September 25, 2004, he was united in marriage to Candice (Cue) Brown. After their marriage they lived in Newton where they made their home. Once retired, Brad and Candy moved to Smithville, MO where he continued his love for fishing, kayaking, bird watching and spending time outdoors. Most of all, he loved sitting around a roaring campfire with friends and family enjoying a good craft beer.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Andi; his brother Eric; and his step-son Troy.

Brad is survived by his wife Candy; his brother Cary; his step-children Ty, Stephanie (Damon), Josh (Lance), and Shannon (Heath); step-grandsons Desmond and Brady; other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be held at 10:30-11:30 a.m. with a Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 7th at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, IA.

Inurnment will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8th at Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, IA.

Hazel Davis, 75, from St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away at Advance Care surrounded by family, Hospice, nurses and her CNA’s, Wednesday, February 26, 2025.

She was born on April 29, 1949, to Howard Eugene Roberts and Norman Lee Wasson in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Hazel's education concluded after completing the 10th grade, but her wisdom knew no bounds. A formidable player at the card table, a savvy shopper, and an avid Pepsi enthusiast, she embraced the joys of life with gusto.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents Howards Roberts and Norma Frippando, her daughter Amy Belle and her siblings Marsha, Bobby and Jimmy.

She leaves behind a loving family, including her daughter Tina Sowders and son-in-law Mike, her six grandchildren: Samantha Sowders, Colby Sowders, Skyler, Bailey, Jace and Nash Williams; and seven great-grandchildren: Sabastian, Jayson, Dillon, Thomas, Bella Burns, Dreyton and Boston Sowders, who were the lights of her life. Her presence will also be deeply missed by numerous friends and extended family members. Hazel's presence was a gift to all who knew her, and she will be profoundly missed.

She was born June 11, 1921, to Louis C. and Myrtle (Tennis) Beaty in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Margie graduated from Benton High School, St. Joseph. Missouri, in 1939, and Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, in 1941.

She married Everett Lee Strautman on November 16, 1945. They were married for nearly 40 years before his death in 1985.

Margie and Everett were engaged in the grocery business for decades in Atchison and Holt counties in northwest Missouri, as owners of the Market Basket in Tarkio and the Hy-Klas grocery in Craig, Missouri.

After relocating to Kansas City in the early 1980s, Margie worked at Farmland Industries, retiring in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, Minnie Hochenauer Beaty, stepbrother William Hochenauer, and her husband.

Survivors include her children: William L. (Bill) Strautman, Grandview, Missouri; Randolph (Randy) Strautman and his spouse, Marni, The Villages, Florida; Ellen A. Strautman and her spouse, Cheryl Duncan, Columbia, Missouri, and James Alexander (Alex) Strautman and his spouse, Kevin Spier, Tacoma, Washington.

David Liechti, 68, formerly of Wathena, Kansas, passed away Monday, February 24, 2025, at his home in Easton, Missouri.

He married Patricia Hague on December 6, 1953 in Savannah, MO, she passed away in 2018. Jack was retired from Seven-UP Bottling Co., and was the co-owner of the Shady Lane Greenhouse in St. Joseph. 

Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Shaw, and father, Jack N. Samuels Sr., wife, Patsy Jo Samuels, son, Terry L. Samuels, and brother, Jerry Samuels. 

Survivors include: daughter, Kathryn "Sam" (John) Dobosz of St. Joseph, MO, five grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, brother, Bill Shaw, and sister in law, Shirley Samuels.

Walter Lee Ashler, Sr., 77, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away after a brief illness on Monday, February 24, 2025.

He was born March 9, 1947 to John Sr. and Minnie (Bywater) Ashler in Union Star, Missouri.

Walter graduated from Faucett High School in 1965. He served in the United States Army in Korea during the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed dancing and was a member of a square-dancing club. He was also an avid coin collector.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Jr. (Pam); infant sister, Barbara; nephew, Christopher Ashler; grandparents, Oliver and Emma Ashler and Walter and Minnie Mae Bywater; companion, Doris Kessberger; many aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his children, Walter Jr. and Veronica Brown; sisters, Connie Cockrum, Bonnie Giseburt (Ned), and Rita Boyer (Alfred); numerous grandchildren; uncle, Omer Ashler; friend, Amanda Kennedy; numerous nieces and nephews.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Dixie Joan Stoneking Ruhnke, who peacefully entered eternal rest on February 23, 2025, at the age of 82.

Born on November 6, 1942, in Trenton, Missouri, to Mack and Pebble Stoneking, Dixie spent her early years in Humphries, Missouri, where she attended school, played basketball and was chosen as the band’s majorette. She later moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, before eventually settling in Kansas City, where she built a life filled with love, adventure and cherished memories.

A devoted believer in Christ, Dixie found strength in her faith and was a longtime member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church. She lived a life full of curiosity and adventure, loving to travel and taking many trips with her children, grandchildren, sister, brother-in-law and nieces, creating memories that will be forever cherished.

Among her many roles in life, none were more treasured than being "Nanny" to her five grandchildren and two great-grandsons. She adored them immensely, finding joy in their laughter and growth. Family was at the heart of everything she did, and she was a source of unwavering love, warmth and wisdom.

Dixie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Henry Edward Ruhnke Sr., her son Henry (Heindrick) Edward Ruhnke Jr., her older sister Betty Stoneking Smith and her infant brother James Owen Stoneking. She is survived by her devoted children, Joanna Ruhnke Dixon (Jason) and Brian Ruhnke; her grandchildren, Drew Dixon (Amber), Ashlyn Dixon, Blake Dixon, Alexa Dixon, and Amara Ruhnke; and her cherished great-grandsons, Graham Dixon and Elliot Dixon. She also leaves behind her loving sister, Mary Stoneking Glidewell (Dean), as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends who will miss her deeply.

She enjoyed her morning coffee, staying informed with the latest news, and sharing a special bond with the beloved cats and dogs she had over the years. Dixie also had a passion for flowers and took great joy in planting and nurturing them. Her career spanned many years in banking and at Dillard’s, and she was also a devoted homemaker, caring for her family with dedication and love.

Dixie’s kindness, strength, and quick wit left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with those she dearly missed.

Dixie’s love and light will forever remain in our hearts.

Betty Ann Olson, 89, of Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away on February 23, 2025, at Amberwell Hiawatha. She was born on September 12, 1935, in Rulo, Nebraska, to Russell Adams and Alice (Steinhaur) Adams. Betty was one of 12 children and lived most of her life in northeast Kansas.

Betty graduated from Falls City High School in 1953. She worked as a telephone operator in Robinson, where she met and married the love of her life, Herbert E. Olson. The couple wed in Highland on July 10, 1955, and together they raised seven children filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.

Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Hiawatha. She enjoyed camping, attending Elks Club events, and in her early married life, was a member of the Dozen and a Half Club in Highland.

Betty worked for many years as a cook at Robinson Elementary and Junior High School, where her warm meals and kind heart touched many lives. She also worked as a CNA at several nursing homes and at the Hiawatha Hospital.

Betty’s legacy will live on through her six surviving children: Doug (Lisa) Olson of Hiawatha; Teresa (Gary) Campbell of Clarksdale, MO; Pamela (Steven) Gunnells of Nolensville, TN; Steve (Robin) Olson of Burlington Junction, MO; Charles (Teresa) Olson of Hiawatha; and Jeff (Margaret) Olson of Hiawatha. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild, and one brother Roy Adams of Lincoln, NE. &nbsp;

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Herbert, one son Rick, and four brothers and six sisters.

Betty will be remembered for her selfless devotion to her family, her kindness, and her strength. &nbsp;She made an impact on everyone she encountered. Betty will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Betty’s Eternal Life is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Hiawatha, with Pastor Michael Lehmann officiating. &nbsp;Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Robinson.
