Dortha Marie Fletchall, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, July 26, 2024.

She was born on June 14, 1941, to Earl and Doris (Lawson) Wilfong in Mound City, Missouri.

She was united in marriage to Virgil L. Fletchall on March 10, 1962.

Dortha was a proud wife and homemaker, providing a loving environment for their four children. Making memories with her family was her favorite pastime, and she loved to shop and go out for lunch with her daughters.

She enjoyed camping, playing cards, crossword puzzles, reading, music, sewing, and quilting. Dortha also had a collection of baby dolls that she loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Darlene Budine, Gerald “Butch” Wilson, Joyce Carver, and Winston Wilson; and her son-in-law, Mike Nolen.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Virgil Fletchall; children, Donald Fletchall (Alicia), Virginia Griffith (Mark), Carla Nolen and Becky Ruoff (Randy); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will continue to cherish their special memories of Dortha’s life.

Ruth M. Martin, 104, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2024.

She was born on August 4, 1919, to Thomas and Bessie (Fischer) Krejci in Crete, Nebraska.

She graduated from Crete High School in 1937.

Ruth married Edgar E. Martin on August 16, 1942, in Chula Vista, California. During World War II, she worked at an airplane factory while in California. Her husband was stationed in San Angelo, Texas, for a time, and then their family relocated to St. Joseph, Missouri. They shared 56 years together before Edgar passed away in 1998.

During her lifetime, Ruth was an active member of various organizations. She was active in the Lindberg and Lafayette PTA, even serving as president, a Girl Scout leader, a board member of the St. Joseph Rainbow for Girls Assembly #12, member of the Grand Cross of Color, member and past president of the Social Order of Beauceants, and for 77 years she was a member of Areme Chapter OES; serving as worthy matron twice, district deputy grand matron and grand representative to Bolivia.

Ruth was of Christian faith and belonged to Marvin McMurry United Methodist Church until the doors were closed. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, helped with vacation bible school and served as alter guild president. She was also active in Church Women United.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Bessie; beloved husband, Edgar; brother, Rudolph Krejci; and sister, Dorothy Bozak.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol Duke (Larry) of Platte City, MO and Sandra Mann (Gary) of San Antonio, TX; three grandchildren, Paul Simms of LaDue, MO, Stacey Culpepper (Joel) of Round Rock, TX, and Sheryl Crump (Winston) of San Antonio, TX; five great-grandsons, Trey Simms, Collin Simms, Harrison King, Griffin Crump and Max Crump; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born on January 30, 1950, in Saint Joseph, Missouri, to Norvel and Bertha Mae (Murril) Lawson.

Ronnie worked as a dedicated custodian and a laborer in the construction industry.

He was preceded in death by his parents and half-sister.

Survivors include his beloved girlfriend, Delph Berg; uncle, Chuck Murril; and many cousins.

Katie M. Winans-Smith, 38, Atchison, Kansas, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 21, 2024, at her residence.&nbsp;

Katie was born November 17, 1985, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the daughter of Brian L. Winans-Smith and Velora “Jeannie” Matt.&nbsp;

As a child she enjoyed hunting and fishing. Katie was a sports fan and loved watching the Kansas City Chiefs. Above all else she loved her children and spending time with her family.&nbsp;

Survivors include her children, Danikqua Thomas, Rodney Kennerly, Jr., Jayden Kennerly, Ty’Lee Thomas, Ta’Vion Thomas, her father Brian Winans-Smith, her mother, Velora Matt, and her sisters, Crystal Smith, April Robinson and Heidi Smith.

Debra Kaye Penick, 62, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

She was born August 11, 1961 in Paola, Kansas to Arthur and Ruth (Maynard) Austin. She grew up in Paola, then attended college in Kirksville, Missouri, where she met Randy Lee Penick. They married on July 16, 1982.

Debra lived and raised her children in Hawaii and California while Randy was stationed there in the Navy. They later moved to St. Joseph to be near family.

She enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her family, especially her granddaughter. She leaves behind a lasting legacy of love for her family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Maynard.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Randy; children, Ryan, Amanda and Cassandra Penick; granddaughter, Maddie Penick; father and stepmother, Arthur and Betty Austin; siblings, Ken Austin (Barbara), Diane DeGrado (John), and Denise French (John); other extended family and friends; and her beloved dog, Princess.

Barbara Henning, 92, of Atchison, Kansas, died July 18, 2024, at Medicalodge of Atchison.

Barbara has been cremated under the direct supervision of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. No formal service will be held. The burial of the cremains will be held later at the Gore-Cummings-Nielson-Armstrong-Case Cemetery in Atchison, Kansas.

Barbara was born May 2, 1932, in Rushville, Missouri, the daughter of Arthur &amp; Nora (Jones) Cummings. She was married to Robert Henning, and he preceded her in death on December 21, 2005. She enjoyed sewing, baking, and embroidery.

She is survived by her sons; Gary Keling (Pamela Williams), Robert (Barbara) Keling, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, brother, Gene Cummings.

     She was born October 24, 1940 in rural Gentry County, Missouri the daughter of Edwin and Maxine (Gotschell) Toombs.

     On April 19, 1957, she married Harlen Stegman in Union Star, MO.  

     Carolyn became a License Practical Nurse and served as Administrator for King City Manor.  She later worked at Our Lady of Rickenbach in Clyde, MO.  Carolyn was a member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Berlin, MO, Opportunity Workshop Board and Grand River Ambulance Board.  She loved camping and taking her grandchildren to the beach.  She was a selfless servant.  Watching Hallmark movies was one of her favorite past times.

     She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Leisa Bryson and two sisters, Marilyn Propheter and Sherry Compton.

      Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Harlan, of the home; son, Todd (Lisa) Stegman; son-in-law, Steve Bryson all of King City, MO; 4 grandchildren, Adrianne Hume, Andrea (Ryan) Hodge, Mariah (Jeff) Maudlin and Garrett (Johnna) Stegman; great-grandchildren, Carter, Zachary and Harper Hodge, Mackenzie (Chase) McCormick, Peyton Hume, Bryson Hume, Ruby and Rowan Stegman and Harlen and Hayden Maudlin; brother, Edwin Don (Carolyn) Toombs, St. Joseph, MO; sister, Maxie (Max) Tunks, King City, MO; brothers-in-law, Tommy Stegman, Dave Compton and Wayne Propheter, Dearborn, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.

John "Rocky" Lloyd Townsend, 80, Platte City, Missouri; passed away Monday, July 22, 2024.

John &nbsp;was born on November 22, 1943 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a 1962 graduate of North Andrew High School.

Mr. Townsend, a Military Veteran, proudly served his country for over twenty years, and retired as an E-6 Tech Sergeant.

John was a talented and skilled truck mechanic for over forty-three years and retired from ABF Truck Lines after twenty-three years of dedicated service.&nbsp;

Mr. Townsend was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 222, and a faithful member of the First Nodaway Church Savannah. John was an avid baseball and softball player. He not only enjoyed playing for numerous years but also enjoyed coaching his sons and grandchildren as well. They shared many fond memories on the ball field together.

John married Jima Kunels on September 26, 1974 in St. Joseph, Missouri, they were looking forward to celebrating their upcoming 50th Wedding Anniversary in September.

John &nbsp;is survived by his wife, Jima, of the home; two sons, Russell Townsend (Trisha) and Chad Townsend (Shephathiah); five grandchildren, Cheyenne, Dakota, Jordan, Payton and Grayson; sister, Cathy Townsend; nieces and nephew, Kristen, Nicholas and Hannah.

Stewartsville, Missouri……Barbara Don Antle, age 90, was born June 7, 1934, in DeKalb County, Missouri the daughter of Forest Ralph and Gletha Wilma (Norris) Tyer and passed away July 22, 2024, with her family at her side.

Barbara and Robert “Bob” Duane Antle were united in marriage on May 24, 1958, in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, at Reverend Miller’s home. To this union three children were born. 

Barbara was a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University with a master’s degree in Elementary Education and she was proud to be a Bearcat. She spent most of her life as an educator in the St. Joseph School District. She was a lifelong member of Culbertson Chapel United Methodist Church where she faithfully played the organ. Barbara was an avid reader and a member of MRTA and Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority. Her true love was her family. She loved attending all the events of the children and grandchildren.&nbsp;

Survivors include her loving husband, Bob, of 66 years; three children, Mark (Michele) Antle, Scott (Lisa) Antle, and Diana (Kevin) Grier; seven grandchildren, Megan (Brian) Free, Myles (Maggie) Antle, Drew (Mallory) Antle, Tyler (Georganna) Antle, Blake Antle, Shane Grier, and Haley Grier; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at Culbertson Chapel United Methodist Church of Stewartsville with burial following at Stewartsville Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 29th at the church.

Jeremy Honeycutt, 42, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, 20, 2024, in Wentzville, Missouri.

He was born on October 26, 1981, in St. Joseph, Missouri to parents Jim and Carole Honeycutt.

He was a graduate of Central High School and later graduated from Missouri Western University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science.

Jeremy began a career with HQ Mobile Installations as a project manager in Webster, Texas. His work allowed him to travel, which he loved.

Generous to a fault, Jeremy was a Christian who was described by his friends as the best person they knew. As a member of the Huffman United Methodist Church, Jeremy began serving the radio ministry at the age of 15. He continued serving Huffman as a member of the sound team for over 15 years.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Helen and Olin Matter, and Clarence and Dorothy Honeycutt; the love of his life, Brooke McKinney; and his beloved dog, Tucker.

Survivors include his parents, Jim and Carole, his sister, Christy Shalz (Todd); niece and nephew, Allie and Carter Shalz; uncles, Bob Matter (Sandra) and Tom Matter (Marcia); aunt, Mary White (Mark); and numerous cousins and other family members who will cherish his memory.

Paul A.Cluck Sr. 76, of Troy, Kansas passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at his home. He was born July 29, 1947 in Troy, KS, son of Josephine and Clarence Cluck. 

He married Beverly Smith on September 1, 1970 in Fanning, KS . Paul was a collector of coins, enjoyed watching westerns and working on the farm, especially riding horses, working calves and with tractors. He was a hard worker and enjoyed helping others. Most of all, he was a family man and loved his family. 

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dale, Clarence Jr. and Dean Cluck and granddaughter Marissia Teague.

Jim was born June 21, 1948, in Bethany, Missouri, the first child and only son of James Eldon and Anna May (McCollum) Gillespie. He died July 24, 2024.

Jim graduated from King City High School in 1966 and attended CMSU. After serving four years in the US Navy, he graduated from Missouri Western State College with a business degree. Over the following years, he worked for King City Feed and Grain Elevator, the King City school district, C. Pettijohn Ford Mercury, J.J. Wayman Lawn, Todd’s Tire Service, Archer Lawn Service, and Fairview Golf Course.

Jim was both an avid golfer and bowler, achieving induction into The St Joseph Bowling Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a voracious reader and a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs &amp; the St. Louis Cardinals—and the KC Royals when not playing the Cards. He could watch a game on TV at the same time he read a book and know what happened in both. Jim also enjoyed a game of poker with good friends and looked forward to card games and triple Yahtzee with family.

He is survived by his significant other, Tammy Power; sisters, Karen Gillespie of Marietta, GA, Kathy Darnell of King City, Terri Gillespie of Independence, and Judy (Dennis) Chambers of Savannah; nephews, Jordan (Alacey Monconduit) Chambers and Brett (Katy Herman) Chambers and niece, Shelby Dudley; grand-nephew, AJ Herman and grand-nieces, Bristol and Saylor Dudley; and numerous cousins and a multitude of great friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, former wife, Sharon Gillespie, nephew, Austin Chambers, and brother-in-law, John Tompkins.

He was of the Methodist faith. Per his request, there will be no services.

He was born on August 12, 1964, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Larry I and Marie (Greene) Schussler.

Larry was a member of Grace Baptist Church and served as an alderman for the city of Plattsburg, Missouri. He loved the country lifestyle away from the bustle of city life.

He was a jack of all trades who specialized in electrical work, plumbing, maintenance and industrial construction. He enjoyed tinkering, fixing things, woodworking and watching John Wayne movies.

Doyle Welter 1956 - 2024

Whiting, Kansas native Grace D. Bender, passed away July 23, 2024, at John Knox Care Center in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. She was 92.

Grace was born at Whiting, January 2, 1932, one of seven children born to Charles Henry and Ruth (Mercer) Chick. She grew up at Whiting where she attended school prior to graduating high school.

She and Charles W. Bender, Jr. were married in 1952 in Whiting. They owned and operated Carquest Auto Parts in Meriden, Kansas for many years before retiring to Bella Vista, Arkansas. There she was a member of the 18 hole womens golf league and organized a Kansas club. He died September 16, 2007. In 2016 she moved to John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit to be closer to family.

Grace was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Lloyd Chick, Donald Chick; two sisters Hazel Miles and Leona McQueen.

Survivors include two sons: Bill Bender of Topeka, Steve Bender (DeAnn) Bender of Lee’s Summit; a brother Duane Chick; a sister Nadine Clay; three granddaughters: Christa, Michele, Natalie; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services are planned for 11 a.m. Monday, July 29, at Springhill Cemetery at Whiting.

Linda Hughes, 72, of Holt, MO passed away on July 20, 2024

She was born on September 13, 1951 to Walter Jr and Georgia (Anderson) Harris in Smithville, MO. Linda grew up in Gladstone, MO, and graduated from Oak Park High School.

On February 3, 1974 she married Denzil “Denny” Hughes. After their marriage they lived in Kansas City, MO, and in 1986 they moved to Holt, MO, where they made their home.

Linda was very involved in watching her children play sports over the years. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, backyard lawn games, playing cards, scrabble, crocheting, and fishing with her husband. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.

Her husband, Denny, preceded her in death on May 13, 2023. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Robert Harris.

Linda is survived by her children, Nick (Erin) Hughes, James (Sara) Hughes, Tracy (Jeff) Ortmeyer, and Doug (Blaire) Hughes; eleven grandchildren, Abigail, Riley, Mackenzie, Michael, Josie, Preston, Logan, Henry, Gordon, Ruby, and Lucy; sister, Donna Hayes; numerous nieces and nephews.

Linda Hughes 1951 - 2024

Roger Edwin Vanover, 78, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born September 28, 1945 in Gentry, Missouri to Gerald “Perky” and Mary (Summa) Vanover. He was a graduate of Lafayette High School. In his younger years, Roger enjoyed bowling, playing softball and basketball. He never missed the annual Lafayette Alumni Tournament. Later in life he kept his love of sports going as an avid fan of the Chiefs, Royals and Mizzou.

Roger proudly served his country as a civil engineer in the U.S. Air Force for eight years and the Air National Guard for 14 years, retiring as Senior Master Sergeant.

He owned and operated Taco Bandido on St. Joseph Avenue for 25 years.

Roger married Theresa Miller on September 30, 2001. She survives of the home.

Roger loved his children and grandchildren very much. He and Theresa enjoyed taking many vacations together and then with the grandchildren, with Hawaii, Walt Disney World and Branson being most memorable.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Theresa; son, Scott Vanover; daughter, Kim Roesle (Scott); stepchildren, Kim Ho (Gordon) and Dustin Zook; grandchildren, Emma Seckinger, Avery Zook, Stella Ho, Max Ho, and Lila Ho; extended family and friends.

He was a graduate of Lafayette High School. In his younger years, Roger enjoyed bowling, playing softball and basketball. He never missed the annual Lafayette Alumni Tournament. Later in life he kept his love of sports going as an avid fan of the Chiefs, Royals and Mizzou.Roger proudly served his country as a civil engineer in the U.S. Air Force for eight years and the Air National Guard for 14 years, retiring as Senior Master Sergeant.He owned and operated Taco Bandido on St. Joseph Avenue for 25 years.Roger married Theresa Miller on September 30, 2001. She survives of the home.Roger loved his children and grandchildren very much. He and Theresa enjoyed taking many vacations together and then with the grandchildren, with Hawaii, Walt Disney World and Branson being most memorable.He was preceded in death by his parents.Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Theresa; son, Scott Vanover; daughter, Kim Roesle (Scott); stepchildren, Kim Ho (Gordon) and Dustin Zook; grandchildren, Emma Seckinger, Avery Zook, Stella Ho, Max Ho, and Lila Ho; extended family and friends.Farewell Services and Public Livestream 10:00 A.M. Mary Elaine Liggett, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away after an extended illness during the early evening hours of July 16, 2024 in Atchison, Kansas. She was born on February 1, 1957 in Atchison, Kansas to John and Betty Mae (Jones) Cameron, two loving parents who instilled in her a strong sense of family and faith.

On April 18, 1980, she married Patrick Kevin Liggett in Troy, Kansas. For 28 years, Mary devoted herself to the residents at GranVillas Assisted Living facility until her retirement in the early Spring of 2023.

Mary's greatest joy in life came from her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Betsy Liggett of Atchison, KS; Victoria (Stacey) Gorman of Sioux City, IA; Erin (Sumakai) Dupree of Atchison, KS; Annie (Jwahn) Kirk of Saint Joseph MO; and Gavin (Kourtney) Liggett of Horton KS as well as her sister-in-law Linda Cameron, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her devotion to them knew no bounds as she poured out endless love and support throughout their lives.

Her sixteen grandchildren brought immeasurable happiness into Mary's life: Paige, Jade, Jonathan, Creede, Bryce, Kayden, Acacia, Declan, Veida, Kailah, Alannah, Jeremiah, Sophiah, Julien, Anzonnetta and Le'andra.

The arrival of her nine great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Yasmin, Marcus, Marley, Mylo, Millie June, Dalias, Novah June Marie, and Sasuke further enriched her world.

In addition to being an extraordinary matriarch, Mary had many passions that brought light into the lives around her. She found great joy through baking delicious treats for those she loved.

Mary immensely enjoyed escaping into worlds unknown in the quiet moments just as much as she relished in story time with her grandchildren. She also delighted in attending church services where she felt spiritually connected and uplifted by the community around her.

Mary is preceded in death by her father John, mother Betty Mae, brother Bill, and sister Bonnie.

A woman whose kindness knew no bound, Mary will be remembered for always lending an ear and offering sage advice when it was needed most. Her unwavering strength, courage, and compassion served as guiding lights for all who were fortunate enough to know this remarkable soul.

Celebration of Life services for Mary will be held on August 2, 2024, at 5 o' clock in the evening at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; 818 Kansas Avenue, Atchison, KS. Cremation care has been entrusted to the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Sean E. Farley, 69, St. Joseph, Missouri; passed away Thursday, July 18, 2024.

Sean was born on October 30, 1954 in San Angelo, Texas, to the late Robert R. and Honore C. (Leven) Farley. He was a 1972 graduate of Bishop LeBlond High School, and received his B.S. in Political Science from Missouri Western State University in 1978.

Mr. Farley spent his career working for Mead Products and Prime Tanning.

Sean was an avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed a round of golf and playing on the Mead softball team. He was a Chiefs and Royals fan.

In addition to his parents, Sean was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Billy Green and Gary Huffman and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sean is survived by his four sisters, Lynn Johnson (Phil), Kassie Harshman (Mark), Mary Beth Green and Ann Harvey (Robin); daughter, Stephanie; step-children; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews that were very special to him.

Mr. Farley will be cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel, where a register book will be available for signing. A Rosary and Prayer Service will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Phyllis Dianne (Dempsey) Dye, 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2024.

She was born April 23, 1944 in St. Joseph to Raymond and Ella (Adams) Dempsey.

Phyllis married Dennis Dean Dye in February 1962. They later divorced but remained friends until his passing in November 2006.

She was a Food Activity Foreman at Fort Leavenworth for many years.

Family meant everything to Phyllis. She took care of all her grandchildren, even raising 10 of them herself. She also loved to bake and was best known for her fudge, brownies, pies, and liked to crochet. In her later years, she enjoyed playing Bingo and Yahtzee with her friends at the nursing home.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Richard Dye; daughter, Denise Williams; brothers Ronald and Richard Dempsey; and her former husband, Dennis.

Survivors include her children, Tammy Lopez and Lisa Dye; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, with two on the way; sisters, Anna Sears and Sandra Esker; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Farewell Services and Public Livestream 1:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home &amp; Crematory. Inurnment Mount Auburn Cemetery. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service.
