Maysville, Missouri….Michelle Amber (Thomas) Ballman, age 23, passed away on April 9, 2025. She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on December 15, 2001, the daughter of Jerry and Sharon Thomas of Maysville.

Michelle and Sebastian Ballman were united in marriage on August 31, 2019 in Palhatton, Kansas. They were blessed with two children who survive of the home.

Michelle was a wonderful wife and mother who loved her family immensely. She had a huge heart and always put others above herself. She enjoyed electronics to which she was very knowledgable.

She is preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Cleda Thomas and her maternal grandmother, Anita Blythe.

Survivors include her husband, Sebastian; children, Nico and Topanga; parents, Jerry and Sharon Thomas; sister, Shelbie Thomas; niece, Ashlynn First; and numerous other family and friends.

Ann Thomson Judge, of Weston, Florida, formerly of Atchison, Kansas, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, at the age of 75.

Born on March 29, 1950, in St. Louis, Missouri, Ann was the beloved daughter of Ralph and Jane Thomson and the cherished granddaughter of Emma Budke. She grew up with her brother, James Thomson (Kathy), who now resides in Richmond Heights, Missouri. Ann attended Ursuline Academy (1968) in St. Louis, Missouri and Benedictine College (1972) in Atchison, Kansas.

She was a devoted wife of 52 years to Thomas Judge, loving mother to Rebecca Finnegan (Michael) and Katie Judge (Hank), and proud grandmother to Emma, Jack, Jase, and Jude Finnegan. Ann found immense joy in attending and hearing about her grandchildren’s sports events, spending time in the classroom with Katie, and traveling back to Atchison to visit with friends and family.

Ann also enjoyed praying the rosary, reading, shopping, talking on the phone and catching up with friends over lunch. Her kindness, determination, and deep love for those around her will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Ann dedicated her life to education and family. A retired teacher, she touched countless lives during her years at St. Bonaventure Catholic School in Davie, FL, and Nativity Catholic School in Brandon, FL. Her passion for learning, commitment to her students, and strong but nurturing spirit left a lasting impact on her school communities.

In keeping with her generous spirit, Ann chose to donate her body to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to contribute to future medical research and education. No services have been scheduled at this time.

Ann’s legacy lives on in the hearts of her family, friends, students, and all who were lucky enough to share in her life.

Rick was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Terry and Joyce (Moden) Koelliker. He graduated from Wathena High School in Wathena, Kansas. Most recently worked as a cashier for Churches Chicken in St. Joseph, Missouri, and previously at Jerry Anne's as a cook.

Rick enjoyed singing karaoke, going to the casino, working with his friends, and spending time with his friends and family.&nbsp;

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Koelliker. Survivors include: his father; Terry (Diana) Koelliker, Brothers; Dallas Koelliker and David Harrison, Sisters; Carla Koelliker and Mellony Rucas. Merlin “Gus” Baker, 92, of Kansas City, MO passed away, April 7, 2025.

He was born on May 1, 1932 to Loyd and Marie (Smith) Baker in Martinsville, MO. Gus grew up in Harrison County, MO graduated from New Hampton High School. He then served his county in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

On October 5, 1957 he was united in marriage to Patsy Jane Howard. After their marriage they lived in Maryville while Gus completed his bachelor’s degree in mathematics. In 1960 they moved to Kansas City where they made their home. Gus later received his master’s in mathematics and physics from the University of Illinois.

Gus was a Math Teacher in the NKC School System. The majority of his career was spent at Oak Park High School from 1965 until 1989 where he was also the golf coach. He also taught at Maple Woods Community College for many years.

He was a member of the Paradise United Methodist Church. Gus was an avid golfer and loved to read. He could also bake a wonderful cinnamon roll.

Gus was preceded in death by his parents, Hershel (Winnie) Baker, Leola (Duane) Bartlett, Bill (Leona) Baker, Donnie (Loretta) Baker, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob Hatton, Dwight (Helen) Howard, Duane (Martha) Howard, Barbara (Emmett) DuBois, and Martha Nelle (Jesse Alan) Edwards.

Suzanne was born on February 8, 1942 in St. Joseph, Missouri to the late William and Caroline (Lowe) Letts. She was a 1961 graduate of Central High School. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Mrs. Harris worked as a dental hygienist and was owner of JAKS Trophy Room.

Susie was a member of Brookdale Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed cooking, knitting and being with and loving on her family and friends.

Susie married Gary Lew Harris on January 6, 1962, when there was 13 inches of snow outside. They celebrated forty-four years of marriage before he preceded her in death on November 20, 2006.

Susie is survived by her children; Kristy Wells (Coleman); Jeffrey Harris (Barbara) and Andy Harris (Amy); grandchildren, Cooper Harris (Rachel), Bailey Walters (Trace), Nick Harris, Kade Harris, Lauryn Harris, Morgan, Mason and P.J.

In addition to her parents and husband; Susie was also preceded in death by her son, Todd Harris.

Born in Highland Park, Illinois, on January 6, 1940, Shirley Dale Lawrence was the second of five children and a lifelong resident of St. Joseph, Missouri. She spent nearly 50 years on North 25th Street, where she grew up, raised her sons, and later returned to live independently with strength and grace.

Shirley attended Central High School in St. Joseph, where she was a cheerleader and beloved by classmates, who voted her “Best Natured Girl” and “Girl with Personality Plus.” As a teenager, Sylvania of the Rockies, a summer camp in Colorado, sparked a lifelong love of the mountains. She began college at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She later transferred to the University of Kansas in Lawrence, earning her bachelor's degree. She went on to complete a master’s degree in Counseling from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

Her career as an elementary school counselor and teacher at Neely, Eugene Field, and Pickett schools in St. Joseph was more than a job—it was her calling. She poured her heart into her work, offering students a steady source of warmth, encouragement, and unconditional love. Shirley was a fierce advocate for those who needed it most, especially “her kids” in the St. Joseph Public Schools.

While she touched many lives professionally, Shirley’s deepest joy came from the relationships she nurtured with friends and family. She treasured lifelong friendships—many dating back to childhood—and celebrated them through annual trips to the Lake of the Ozarks, festive holiday parties, playing mahjongg, painting, and daily walks with her beloved older sister and best friend, Leila. Though different in many ways, Shirley and Leila were inseparable, finding joy and strength in each other’s company.

Shirley’s heart belonged to her family. A devoted and playful mother of three sons, she also brought unmatched energy and imagination to her role as “Granny.” She made memories that will last generations—hosting Granny Camp, exploring museums, playing games, crafting, and always making time for ice cream. Her spirit was vibrant, youthful, and full of fun.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Wyeth Marshall and James Fielding Dale, and her brothers, James Dale, Thomas Dale, and John Dale.

Shirley is survived by her three sons: Robert Scott Lawrence (Hirono) of Tokyo, Japan; Philip Archer Lawrence III (Pamela) of Woodbury, Minnesota; and James Dale Lawrence (Stephanie) of Kansas City, Missouri. She is also survived by her sister, Leila Dale Hicks, and sister-in-law, Roxanne Dale, both of St. Joseph, Missouri.

She was the proud and loving Granny to seven grandchildren —Madeline (Alex), Hootie (Grace), Oscar, Ella, Maizie, Charlotte, and Go Tani—and great-grandmother to Sophia.

Shirley will be remembered for the joy she brought into every relationship — as a devoted mother and playful grandmother, a loyal and lifelong friend, and a compassionate counselor and teacher. Whether guiding a student, laughing with a friend, or playing with her grandchildren, she had a remarkable way of making people feel truly seen, deeply valued, and profoundly loved. Her light lives on in the many hearts she touched.

A devoted and playful mother of three sons, she also brought unmatched energy and imagination to her role as “Granny.” She made memories that will last generations—hosting Granny Camp, exploring museums, playing games, crafting, and always making time for ice cream. He was born September 18, 1981 to Danny Buckler Sr. and Laura (Owens) Renfrow in St. Joseph, Missouri.

RC dedicated many years to the construction industry, where he took great pride in operating dump trucks. He was also skilled at working on cars, with the hood popped open and tools in hand.

His personal time often found him enjoying the thrills of the casino. Above all, RC cherished moments spent with his son and family.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cecil and Helen Buckler, Ronald Sr. and Barb Owens; uncles, Donald Buckler, Wayne Belcher, Ernest Owens, Jeffrey Owens, and Jackie Buckler; cousin, Danny Ray Williams.

Stephen Terry Engnes, 78, Plattsburg, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 7, 2025.

He was born August 8, 1946 to Alvin and Minnie (Lewis) Engnes in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Stephen's journey was one filled with many experiences earned from attending multiple schools across the country, owing to his father's job, ultimately graduating from Marshall High School.

A Vietnam War veteran who served in the United States Army, Stephen carried the same spirit of service into his civilian life. For over 40 years, he worked in construction excelling in various roles at Clarkson Construction. He also channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into Steve’s Custom Towing, a business he owned and managed for several years.

An active member of Local 101, Stephen was not only known for his professional achievements but also for his hobbies. His passion for muscle cars led him to restore them, indulge in drag racing, and eventually establish Mr. Lucky Racing. Stephen also found joy on the golf course.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Olin Engnes, Marilyn Wierschke, and Kathryn Payne.

Helen Joeann Saunders, 85, Weatherby, Missouri, died at home on Monday, April 7, 2025.

She was born July 19, 1939 in Parks, Kansas to parents Mack and Laura Hurd. She graduated from Parsons Jr. College in 1958 and Bethany Hospital School of Nursing in 1961 and obtained her B.S.N from U.M.K.C in 1991. She married Frank D. Saunders December 16, 1961 and made their home in the Kansas City area until 1999 when they moved to Weatherby.

During her career, as a Registered Nurse, Mrs. Saunders was an Assistant Clinical Instructor at Bethany Medical Center, Medical-Surgical nurse at Lakeside Hospital and taught Medical Terminology at Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Mrs. Saunders was active in the Girl Scouts of America and the Parent-Teacher Association for many years. She was an active member of the Hopewell Baptist Church and the Baptist Women on Mission. She was also a member of the Weatherby Coffee Friends.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Frank, of the home, daughters Gina Renee' Saunders of Hamilton, Mo., Kelly Lynn Halstead and husband Tony of K.C., Mo., Sisters, Mary Ruth Vinson, Gloria June Gardner and husband Steve all of Parsons, Ks., and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

He was born December 17, 1952 in St. Joseph.

Charles married Carla Glasbrenner on March 18, 1978. She survives of the home.

He worked in construction, then taught building trades at Hillyard Technical School for 30 years before retirement.

Charles enjoyed riding motorcycles, vintage cars, and the outdoors, especially visiting national parks. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Adam Patrick Dew; and sister, Connie Pawling.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Carla; son, Justin of Mesa, Arizona; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Jordan Reilly of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Abraham and Olive Reilly; sisters, Karen Combs and Melissa Dew; and brother, Michael Dew.

Michael James Barmann, 67, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, surrounded by family at his bedside after a short but courageous battle with cancer.Mike was born on June 12, 1957 in Maryville, MO to James Edward Barmann and Patricia Dianne Cassidy. 

Mike was raised in Northern Colorado and Cheyenne, WY, and later moved to Kearney, MO, graduating in 1976 from Kearney High School. During his youth, Mike was passionate about playing baseball and basketball. Mike enjoyed family vacations as a child which included camping, fishing, and spending time with extended family and cousins. Mike met the love of his life, Angela Diane Darby, and married on July 1, 1978. Mike and Angela enjoyed a beautiful life in Weston, MO with their two sons, Adam and Brian. Mike cultivated a love for sports with his boys and found great joy in watching them compete athletically. Mike enjoyed tailgating and attending Adam’s football games at KU as well as making trips to MU and UNC to watch Brian play football. Mike was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather (Papa), and friend. He loved watching his Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals, fishing, gardening, traveling to Florida, and playing fantasy football. Mike was a devout Catholic and his love for his family and faith were evident in all that he did. Mike retired from Kansas City Power &amp; Light in 2017 after 36 years of dedicated service. 

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Angela, of 46 years; his sons, Adam (Ashley) and Brian (Kristina); his brothers Mark (Marlena) and Terry (Elizabeth); and his grandchildren which he adored, Harper (9), Kendall (8), Jaxson (7), and Avery (6). He was preceded in death by his parents and youngest brother, Paul.

Visitation will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Weston, MO on Monday, April 14 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM, followed by a rosary at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 15, at 10:00 AM, followed by interment at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Dorothy Deanne (Helm) Lafferty, daughter, mother, sister, and friend, passed away in Kansas City, Missouri, on April 4, 2025, at the age of 65. Born on June 18, 1959, to Thomas and Dorothy Helm, Dottie, as she was known, was always full of personality and stories.

Dottie’s early life was filled with the love of her family. She grew up in Smithville, Missouri, the only girl among 5 brothers. After graduating from Smithville High School, Dottie attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, where she majored in Religion. She later attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky for a short time.

Dottie married Patrick Lafferty in December of 1986 and remained married to him until his death in 2022. Out of this union, came the greatest gift Dottie ever offered this world, their daughter, Colleen. Colleen was her greatest accomplishment and a huge source of pride.

Dottie worked at Kansas City Health Department for a number of years before becoming disabled. Beyond her work, she was a longtime member of South Broadland Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed singing in the choir, teaching and writing there. Dottie also enjoyed arts and crafts projects as well as self-publishing a few books.

Dottie is survived by her beautiful daughter, Colleen, as well as extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Patrick Lafferty, her parents Thomas &amp; Dorothy Helm, her step-mother Carol Helm, two of her brothers, Scott and Tom Helm, and her nephew, Mark Helm.

Charles E. Baskins, 81, of Elwood, Kansas passed away Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Charles was born on September 17, 1943, in Elwood, Kansas to Spencer and Joyce (Sanderson) Baskins.

He worked for Armours and Monfort companies. He was a member of the Elwood Fire Department.

Charles married Pamela Hill on January 24, 2012, in Savannah, Missouri. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors: children, Tina Baskins (Kevin), Malinda Wolfing (Rodney), Valorie Hayner (Gary), Amber Hill, Crystal Franke (Kalifornia) and Michael Hill (Kaleigh).

Patricia "Patty" Hatfield 66, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2025 at her home. She was born August 14, 1958 in St. Joseph, daughter of Karen and Edward Amos. 

Patty attended Benton High School. She worked as a Med-Tech at several area nursing facility's. Patty enjoyed working with her flowers, being outdoors, and spending time with her great-grandson, Cyrus. 

She was preceded in death by father, Edward Amos, son, Gary Hatfield, Jr., brother, Melvin Amos, and nephew, Timothy Schroeder. 

Survivors include: mother, Karen Amos, son, Shawn Hatfield, brothers, Osh (Pam) Amos and Joe Amos, sister, Gladys (Jon) Artzer, grandchildren, Gary and Remi,  and great-grandchildren, Joslyn and Cyrus. 

Funeral Service will be 11:00 am, Friday, April 11, 2025 at the Rupp Funeral Home, Pastor Rob Diamond, officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Rupp Funeral Home. Delena Kay (Arbuckle) Ferris, 70 of St. Joseph passed away April 7, 2025. &nbsp;Delena was born September 24, 1954, in St. Joseph to Homer Wesley and Edith Rachel (Decker) Arbuckle.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three sisters Inga, Connie, Betty.

Survivors are her children, Shelly Shannon (J.K.); David Ferris (Ashley) eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Rev. Rex Arbuckle (Tina); sisters Teresa Smith and Twila Winsor; several nieces and nephews.

Delena enjoyed the outdoors, taking care of her yard and flowers. &nbsp;She enjoyed music, country, rock and roll, and gospel and loved going to garage sales.

Phillip Saverino Jr., age 82, after a life richly lived, passed away at home on April 6, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Born on April 5, 1943, Phil was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents Philip (1969) and Georgia (2007), brother Melvin (1961), Floyd (2003), and son Christopher (2003). Survivors include his wife, Linda, son Jeff Saverino (Marnie), stepdaughter Kim Lux (Roger), brothers Everett Saverino, Ron Saverino (Donna), Steve Saverino (Leslie), sisters Mimi Verhaeghe (Gary), Becky Dahl (Curt) and Angie Moates (Jay), as well as beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Not long after graduating from Central High School, Phil took over the Saverino Safe &amp; Lock Company which was originally established by his father Phillip Sr. in 1920. Having worked there for over 60 years, Phil watched it grow into a four generational family business. It seemed everybody went to Saverino's for their keys. He could quickly unlock car doors, trunks, antique boxes, padlocks, knob locks and anything else with a key. Not to mention, there was not a combination safe that he could not open. He loved being a locksmith as he quickly made friends with his customers from all over St. Joseph and nearby communities.

Phil had a wide range of interests throughout his lifetime. In his younger years, he loved fast cars. He rebuilt his '65 Mustang, built a custom hot rod, and he often participated in races at the Kansas drag strip. Much like his father, he enjoyed tearing around town on a motorcycle. If you happened to be his passenger, you better be hanging on for dear life because you never knew when he might jump a curb and take a shortcut. Phil also enjoyed bowling, playing softball, golfing, trips to Las Vegas casinos, driving excursions to visit out of state relatives and later in life, riding his Honda Gold Wing to motorcycle rallies. He was a avid reader of all kinds of books. He also liked watching old movies and westerns. One of his favorite things to do was hang out in museums. Never in a hurry, he stopped and read every word on every display sign with a child-like curiosity in his eyes. Phil loved playing cards with the guys at the shop and according to them, he often walked away the winner. He loved betting on horse races with his family and friends. He studied the racing forms and could quickly tell you the names of the jockeys, trainers and racing statistics. Going to the dog races at the Woodlands with the guys was yet another entertainment venue for him. And then there was football season, Super Bowl and March Madness which made him very happy- Especially if his team won.

The best way to describe Phil Saverino is he had a heart of gold that was as big as the world. If you needed help of any kind, he was your go-to guy. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. He was an exemplary individual as he taught everyone through his lifestyle how to live each day like it is your last.&nbsp;

Xiomara was a vibrant soul who cherished the aromas of a fine perfume and the beauty of blossoms, reflecting the joy she found in life's simple pleasures.

Her passion for music was evident as she often hummed along to the melodies of her favorite singers Marco Antonio Solis and Marisela. More than anything, Xiomara was devoted to her family, generously giving her time, love, and wisdom. Georgene was a proud graduate of Odessa High School in Odessa, Missouri. Her talent and dedication to her craft led her to further her education at Columbia College, where she studied arts and honed her skills.

Her artistic spirit was not only evident in her academic pursuits but also shone brightly through her professional life. As a fine and talented artist, she achieved the remarkable feat of having one of her batik works displayed in the New York Art Gallery, a testament to her exceptional talent and vision.

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Georgene was a dedicated contract administrator for DST Services, where she was known for her professionalism and keen eye for detail. Georgene's artistic flair was not confined to the canvas; it spilled over into her daily life, earning her numerous accolades in art competitions.

Georgene's love for the country lifestyle was evident in the way she embraced living on the farm. Her passion for animals was profound, and she leaves behind a dog and two cats who will deeply miss her nurturing presence. Her connection with nature extended to her enjoyment of thunderstorms, where she found beauty in the lightning and the night skies.

Halloween was one of Georgene's favorite times of the year, a season that allowed her to express her creativity and joy for life. Her happiness and contentment with life were infectious.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Janice Kay Kelly; her father, Gary Frogge; her sisters Jamie A. Frogge and Stormie Kelly, and her grandparents.

Lillie Mae Cook, 75, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, April 4, 2025.

She was born March 13, 1950 to the late Raymond and Lucille (Garner) Gelvin in St. Joseph, Missouri. Lillie was a graduate of Benton High School and carried with her the sense of community fostered there throughout her entire life.

In 1988, she embarked on a business venture as a partner in the Dr. Vinyl franchise in Scottsdale, Arizona, alongside her lifelong friends, Wanda and Leroy Pike. Later she co-founded Paws Pet Bakery with close friend Mary Wilegus.

She adored traveling, especially to her favorite retreat, Disney World. Lillie's keen eye for uniqueness led to her successful involvement with the Jesse James Antique Mall, a place that also introduced her to Mike Ceglenski. Together, they shared a beautiful and caring relationship, beginning in 2018.

Her dedication extended into her spiritual life, where she was an engaged member of Grace Calvary Chapel. A philanthropic heart, she was a strong supporter of Friends of the Shelter, reflecting her deep love for animals, especially her devoted canine companion, Bella Sera.

Survivors include her sisters, Linda Newberry, Tracie Webb (Chris) and Kathy Aplin (Jimmy); nieces, Tanya Brower Damon, Leslie Crum (Loren); and cousin, Gary Hart (Joanne).
