Matthew Wood, age 10, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away on July 8, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born at just 29 weeks on November 25, 2014, Matthew faced life with a spirit far bigger than his tiny body. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, he spent much of his life in and out of hospitals, always bravely, and always with his mom, Caitlin Wood, by his side.
Matthew’s life, though short, was filled with joy, wonder, and an infectious smile that could light up any room. He adored Mickey Mouse, listened intently to Taylor Swift, and delighted in Bubble Guppies. In 2019, he was granted a Make-A-Wish trip to Walt Disney World—a dream come true—shared with his parents, Caitlin and Nathan Wood; his siblings, Emily (16), Thomas (12), and Natalie (8).
Matthew's perfect curly hair and glowing smile became his signature, a reminder to everyone who met him of the beauty of resilience and the power of love. He was deeply cared for by the extraordinary doctors, nurses, and staff at Children’s Mercy Hospital, whose compassion and dedication gave him comfort and extended time with those who loved him most.
Matthew’s heroism extends to the two people whose lives are changed forever with the gift of organ donation.
Matthew will always be remembered by his grandparents, Denise and Jim Rowland, Deanna and Steve Wood; aunts, uncles, cousins and a great grandmother.
Though his journey on earth has ended, Matthew’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his courage and light.
A celebration of Matthew’s life will be held at St. Benedict Catholic Church on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM. The rosary will begin at 9:30 AM followed by visitation at the church. In honor of Matthew’s memory, the family encourages donations to Make-A-Wish Foundation or Children’s Mercy Hospital in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.
