Mary Ann Dittemore, age 79, of Atchison, Kansas, died on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Ignite Medical Resort in Kansas City, KS.

A memorial service will be on Monday, February 20, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday for one hour prior to the service.

Mary Ann was born on June 6, 1943, in Atchison, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond “Lloyd” Dittemore and Helen Boatwright.

She was employed at Saunders Manufacturing, Berger Company and was a bus driver for USD 409 until her retirement.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and attended Pastor’s Adult Bible Class for many years. She lived at Trinity Place for ten years before moving to nursing facilities.

Survivors include her daughters, Lisa Green and Diane Milburn; and twelve grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Kenneth Raymond Dittemore and Rose Marie Hennis; two sons, Nick Soden and Timothy Cafferty; and a granddaughter, Haley Burge.

Mark A. Hart, 63, of St. Joseph, passed away Monday, February 13, 2023 at his home. He was born July 24, 1959 in St. Joseph, MO, son of Bettie and Jerry Hart. 

He graduated from Lafayette High School, class of 1977. He served in the Marines, being honorably discharged following his time of service in San Diego, CA. Mark loved his family more than anything, and enjoyed spending time with them and having BBQ's. He also enjoyed fishing, painting, listening to music, making arrowheads, pottery, and leather wallets. Survivors include: daughter, Shandi (David) Hart of St. Joseph, brother, Randy (Nancy) Hart of St. Joseph, sister, Laura (Jay) Crump of Country Club Village, MO, 3 grandchildren, Isaiah, Julie, Arual, 6 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dogs, Sugar and Lucky. 

Funeral Services and public live stream will be 2:00 pm, Friday, February 17, 2023 at the Rupp Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Friday. The Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Darold Carl Trautman, 93, of St. Joseph, passed away February 14, 2023.&nbsp; Darold was born September 24, 1929 in Bancroft, Nebraska to Carl Jacob and Mabel I. (Hartline) Trautman.

He attended Lafayette High School and was a 1948 graduate of East High School in Sioux City, Iowa. He retired after 38 and a half years with Hiland Dairy.

Darold was preceded in death by his wife Cecile on May 29, 2009; his parents; a sister and three brothers.

Survivors include sons, Christian Trautman, David Trautman (Frankie), Mark Trautman (Lee), Matthew Trautman (Susan); numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Lois Trautman.

He was a member of the Teamsters Union, and attended Brookdale Presbyterian Church. He loved river fishing, boating, bird hunting, mushroom hunting, and anything outdoors.

Visitation will be Friday, February 17, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Services will be Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Arthur Ray “Buddy” Thomas, 76, of Leavenworth, Kansas died February 5, 2023 at Providence Medical Center. He was born on May 17, 1946 to Luther H. and Zora E. (Barkley) Thomas.

Buddy is survived by his two brothers, David (Cherie) Thomas of Leavenworth and Jesse Thomas of Longmont, Colorado, one sister, Lorretta Zeck of Leavenworth and several nieces and nephews, as well as several friends at Hillcrest Manor.

Daniel Eugene Anseaume 70 of Excelsior Springs Missouri died Sunday Feb. 12, 2023 at a local healthcare center. Born on Oct. 22, 1952, in St Joseph Missouri to Robert P. and Maxine F. (Martin) Anseaume. 

Daniel was a graduate of Plattsburg High School class of 1972.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church Plattsburg Missouri. He worked in housekeeping and maintenance for St. Luke’s Hospital for many years.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

She was born December 1, 1964 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the daughter of Vondel and Janice Havenstein O’Briant. She graduated from Manhattan High School, Manhattan Community College with a degree in computer technology and received certification as a CDL driver through Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Tracy worked at Kansas State University for ten years, Ag. Resources for eleven years and also worked in the deli at the Onaga Country Market.&nbsp;

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Duluth.

December 14, 2002 she married the love of her life, Steve Ivy in Wheaton. They blended their families and made a home in Duluth where they enjoyed hosting their annual community fish fry for family and friends.

Tracy was preceded in death by her husband, father, and a son, Richard Eugene Ince.

Survivors include her mother, Janice O’Briant, Onaga; her children, Tiffany Sanders (K.J.), Havensville, Stormy Millering (Dennis), Manhattan, Jeremiah Ivy (Jessica), Wamego, Danielle Ivy, Hutchinson, Anna Henneberg (William), Wheaton and Joshua Ivy, Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Thomas O’Briant and Timothy O’Briant, both of Manhattan; a sister, Crystal Sapp, Manhattan; thirteen grandchildren, Waylon, Carson, Braylon, Casey, Luna, Clayton, Hunter, Trenton, Kameron, Colby, Christian, Jax and Marshall, nieces, nephews and many friends, all of whom she loved deeply.

Ruth I. Stucky, age 98, of Atchison, Kansas died Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Vintage Park.

Ruth has been cremated under the care and direction of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.&nbsp; A Memorial service will be announced at a later date.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church Choir Fund or Amberwell Hospital Hospice or the Salvation Army and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.

Ruth was born February 25, 1924, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Rosa Mae Schwein Markle.&nbsp; She attended schools in Hutchinson and graduated from Hutchinson High School.

Ruth served for several years as assistant secretary of the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, Kansas, and later as a teacher’s associate in Sioux City, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska, until moving to Atchison, Kansas, where she served as a secretary and performed clerical work for Stecher Accounting until her retirement.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Atchison and formerly of First Congregational Church in Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was an active participant with Christian Women’s Fellowship and the Friendship Sunday School class of First Christian Church in Atchison. She assisted with loaves and fishes and young at heart luncheon group and volunteered at the Cray Historical Home and the Muchnic Art Gallery.

Survivors include two daughters, Marsha Adair, Atchison, KS; Judith Stucky, Englewood, CO; a son Mark A. Stucky, Seattle, WA; and four grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by a sister, Willa Dillon, and five brothers, Troy Markle, Vern Markle, Forrest Markle, Claud Markle and Morris Markle.

She worked at Quaker Oats as a Forklift Operator retiring after 27 years of service, she then worked at the McCormick Distillery for several years. 

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Mauzey, and Betty Center, son, Todd Anthony McDowell, and brothers, Ray and Ralph Mauzey.

He was working at Triumph Foods as a fork lift operator. John enjoyed motorcycles, fishing, guns, fixing up houses, and he loved the Marines and the military. 

John was preceded in death by his parents Clifford Bailey and Joan Moreno. 

Survivors include: daughter, Lacey (Armando) Sanjuan, St. Joseph, MO, and son, Cody (Kennizee) Boswell, St. Joseph, MO, granddaughter, Amaya, and four other grandchildren, brothers, Wesley Bailey, Dorn Bailey, Bill Bailey, Alberto "Bet" (Yolanda) Moreno, and Leonard Bailey, and his sister, Mayla Moore.

John Paul Bailey 1969 - 2023

Shirley L. Frisbie, 93, lifelong resident of South St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023 at a local health care facility. She was born October 2, 1929 in St. Joseph, daughter of Laura and Burton Baker. 

She graduated from Benton High School, and later married Kenneth Frisbie, who preceded her in death in 1996. Shirley worked with her family business as a book keeper, and she was a homemaker for many years. She enjoyed cooking, mowing her grass, doing so until she was 86. She was a great supporter of her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them. Shirley was known as the neighborhood cat lady. She enjoyed feeding and caring for the neighborhood cats.

Shirley L. Frisbie, 93, lifelong resident of South St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023 at a local health care facility. She was born October 2, 1929 in St. Joseph, daughter of Laura and Burton Baker. She graduated from Benton High School, and later married Kenneth Frisbie, who preceded her in death in 1996. Shirley worked with her family business as a book keeper, and she was a homemaker for many years. She enjoyed cooking, mowing her grass, doing so until she was 86. She was a great supporter of her children and grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them. Shirley was known as the neighborhood cat lady. She enjoyed feeding and caring for the neighborhood cats. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth Frisbie, and several brothers and sisters. Faye Elaine Randall was born on July 31, 1931 in Oregon, Missouri to William R. and Wilma C. (Cooper) Steward.

Elaine graduated from Oregon High School in 1949. She then became employed as a clerk and teller at the former Zook and Roecker State Bank.

On November 3, 1950 she was married to James Connie Randall, and they became parents of a son and daughter.

Elaine passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023 at the Oregon Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Connie, in 1997; and sister, Bette J. Jennings.

Survivors include her daughter, Wilma Jean Randall and her good friend, LaVern Harms, of Oregon; son, John D. (Rose) Randall of Harrisonville, Missouri; sister, Frances L. Shores of St. Joseph, Missouri; and grandson, Toby Randall.

Elaine enjoyed going to all of her kid's activities. She was a member of the Oregon Christian Church.

Loretta E. (Fink) Pile of Oregon, Missouri passed away on February 11, 2023 at the Oregon Care Center.

She was born August 10, 1926 in Oregon, the daughter of Jacob and Sophia Louise (Sommer) Fink. She attended Woods Elementary School and graduated from Oregon High School in the class of 1944, after which she attended Park College in Parkville, Missouri.

On October 5, 1946 she married Hollis L. Pile, Jr. and they were involved in farming in the Forbes area.

Loretta was a lifelong member of the Woodville Church, where she served as an Elder and teacher. She was also a 50-plus member of Chapter Z, P.E.O., Homemakers Club, Better Homes and Garden Club, American Legion Auxiliary 190, a 4-H leader, and a member of the Moila Colorettes.

Surviving are daughters, Rebecca (Greg) Wingfield and Marcia (Jim) Jackson, all of Oregon; granddaughter, Christie (Eduardo) Elizondo and great granddaughter Catalina, all of Berlin, Germany; daughter-in-law, Tricia Pile of Kansas City, Missouri; step grandson Mark Lamoree and step great granddaughter, Bianca Lamoree of Liberty, Missouri; sister, Mary Merea Schulte and her husband George Shelby Schulte, from Overland Park, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Elverda Nadene Rowe, 79, of Weston, MO passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital-Barry Rd. in K.C., MO. 

Nadene was born March 27, 1943, in Bethany, MO. 

Nadene spent her working life as a Home Health Care Provider. She enjoyed gardening, working puzzles, crocheting and playing Bingo. Nadene was of the Christian Faith, loved reading her Bible, and attended the Christian Assembly Church of Weston, MO. She had a passion for spending time with her family. 

Nadene was preceded in death by her mother Mary Bell Holiday; brothers Joe, Mason, Don, and Wayne Holiday; sisters Katy Martin, and Imogene Holiday; and 2 grandsons Jerry Craig Ellis and Levi Blake Ellis. 

She is survived by her sister Laura Bailey; her daughters Donna (Randy) Clark, Dena (Steve) Minor, and Tammie (John) McCullough; her son Clyde (Diane) Rowe; 16 grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren. 

A visitation will be held 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at the Christian Assembly Church of Weston; followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral service. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Weston.

Earl Steffes, 94, of Smithville, MO passed away, February 11, 2023.

He was born on August 26, 1928 at home to Fred and Rose (King) Steffes in Wien, MO, where he grew up on the family farm. He decided at a young age that farm life was not for him.

Earl graduated from Bucklin High School at age 16. After graduation, he moved to Kansas City and worked at a bank.

He served his country in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper. After his honorable discharge he married Leora Little in 1948 while residing in Kansas City. Earl went to electronics school and started his business, Steffes TV as a repairman. At age 49 he went back to college and earned his PhD in psychology with a 3.82 grade point average while working full time. He worked as a psychologist for a few years. Earl later worked at Uni-Gard until age 84.

Earl loved reading and learning. He was quite a musician and could play many instruments including guitar, violin, and any wind instruments.

After a near death experience, he lived the last 8 years with Andy and Debbie. They are saints and nobody could or would have cared for him as they did.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leora; brother, Cletus Steffes; and sister, Marcella Canning.

He is survived by his nine children, Deborah (Andrew) Swearingin; Carol (Randy) Burton, Patricia (Don) Finks, Dennis (Nancy) Steffes, Joyce (Dennis) Ronnau, Beverly McDonald, Bryan (Debra) Steffes, Karen (Todd) Ruff, Virginia (Monty) Prather; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Jannie Quinn, 63, of Kansas City, MO passed away, February 10, 2023.

She was born on June 18, 1959 to James Dale and Edna Marilyn (Roush) Bayless in Kansas City, MO. She grew up in Kansas City North and graduated from North Kansas City High School.

On August 13, 1977 she was united in marriage to Rick Quinn. After their marriage they lived in Kansas City where they made their home.&nbsp;

Jannie made a beautiful home while raising her children and worked at Walmart for 25 years. Jannie had a heart for others in all that she did. She loved spending time with her family and sharing her faith. Jannie was an artist, baker, gardener and pet lover. Anyone that knew her loved her for her kind, gentle spirit.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jannie is survived by her husband Rick; daughters, Stephanie Quinn, Missy (Jason) French, and Shannon Quinn; grandchildren, Rylee Quinn, Lily French and Brady French; other relatives and many friends.

She was born on August 16, 1967, to Jerry William and Rose Ann (Wheaton) Wallace in Mattoon, IL. Tina graduated from Estherville High School in Estherville, Iowa. She received her bachelors degree from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa.&nbsp;

On October 17, 2006, she was united in marriage to her best friend and soulmate, Brian Reichart. They lived in Estherville, IA until moving to Smithville, MO in 2014.&nbsp;

Tina and Brian owned and operated Goodtimes Bar and Grill and Simply Unique Gift Store in Estherville, IA until moving to Smithville, MO. She was currently employed with Social Security Administration in Kansas City, MO.

She was a member of Vineyard Church in Kansas City where she volunteered as an AWANA Cubbies Director. Tina was a past member at Grandview Baptist Church in Estherville, IA where she was the AWANA Commander. She was a living example of her faith by “Clinging tightly to the Lord our God” (Joshua 23:8) and loved sharing His word with the AWANA’s ministry and her family.

Tina enjoyed crocheting, gardening, family vacations and DIY projects. Most of all, Tina loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and her pup Penelope Sue.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jerry Wallace and Rose Maynard and her grandparents including her grandmother Mildred French.&nbsp;

Tina Marie Reichart 1967 - 2023

Mary&nbsp;Katherine (McCourt) Lee, age 84, of Easton, Kansas, died on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care with family at her side.

Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, February 17, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Atchison. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. A parish rosary will be on Thursday, Feb. 16th&nbsp;beginning at 5:30 p.m. with visitation to follow until 7:00 at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick’s Cemetery or Shriners Children’s.

Mary was born in Atchison County, Kansas on May 5, 1938, the daughter of Stephen H. and Retha “Pat” (Miller) McCourt. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary and graduated from Atchison High School in 1956.

Mary was employed at the Mop Factory for a short time before becoming a homemaker and a dedicated farmers wife. She was a wonderful, hands-on mother and grandmother who took great care of her family. Her family was the most important aspect of her life. She formerly taught CCD in the Easton and Mooney Creek communities. She will be remembered for being a great cook and her amazing pie making ability, especially her fruit pies! As a very talented seamstress, she volunteered her time at the Tri Parish Quilters in Easton making quilts to be donated.

She married Joseph Lee on September 3, 1960, at St. Joseph Church in Atchison. They shared forty-seven years of marriage before Joe’s death on December 18, 2007. She is also preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Leanna McCourt.

Survivors include her children, Brenda Dobbs (Mark) of Leavenworth, KS; Dan Lee of Easton, KS, John Lee (Suny) of Potter, KS, Mike Lee (Julie Acheson) of Nortonville, KS; a nephew, Ronnie (Lisa) McCourt of Kearney, NE; a niece, Debbie (Terry) Robinson of Lancaster, KS; seven grandchildren, six step grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Mary&nbsp;Katherine (McCourt) Lee, age 84, of Easton, Kansas, died on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care with family at her side.Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, February 17, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Atchison. Interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. A parish rosary will be on Thursday, Feb. 16th&nbsp;beginning at 5:30 p.m. with visitation to follow until 7:00 at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick’s Cemetery or Shriners Children’s.Mary was born in Atchison County, Kansas on May 5, 1938, the daughter of Stephen H. and Retha “Pat” (Miller) McCourt. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary and graduated from Atchison High School in 1956.Mary was employed at the Mop Factory for a short time before becoming a homemaker and a dedicated farmers wife. She was a wonderful, hands-on mother and grandmother who took great care of her family. Her family was the most important aspect of her life. She formerly taught CCD in the Easton and Mooney Creek communities. She will be remembered for being a great cook and her amazing pie making ability, especially her fruit pies! As a very talented seamstress, she volunteered her time at the Tri Parish Quilters in Easton making quilts to be donated.She married Joseph Lee on September 3, 1960, at St. Joseph Church in Atchison. They shared forty-seven years of marriage before Joe’s death on December 18, 2007. She is also preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Leanna McCourt.Survivors include her children, Brenda Dobbs (Mark) of Leavenworth, KS; Dan Lee of Easton, KS, John Lee (Suny) of Potter, KS, Mike Lee (Julie Acheson) of Nortonville, KS; a nephew, Ronnie (Lisa) McCourt of Kearney, NE; a niece, Debbie (Terry) Robinson of Lancaster, KS; seven grandchildren, six step grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.<figure>

Bobby attended Faith Bible Fellowship Church and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, casinos, watching wrestling, and spending time with his grandkids.

Bobby married Coleen Petesch they later divorced. Shirley Belle (Wall) Punzo, 84, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023.

Shirley was born October 19, 1938 in St. Joseph to Samuel and Nancy Wall. She was married to Harvey Riley. They later divorced and she married Charles Punzo, Jr.&nbsp; They divorced and she was engaged to Ron Thompson. He preceded her in death. Shirley was a member of McCarthy Baptist Church. She was employed as a housekeeper by Heartland West Hospital for 23 years.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, brother Clifton Wall, sisters Maxine Garvis and Lucille Pottoroff.

Survivors include sons David Riley of Salt Lake City, UT, Mark Riley of St. Joseph, MO, stepdaughter who Shirley thought of as a daughter Cherie Phillips (Danny ) of St. Joseph, MO, several grandchildren and great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Violet was born on September 27, 1936 to Truman Sample and Violet (Parker).&nbsp;

She was a homemaker throughout her life.&nbsp; She raised eight children.&nbsp; William (Teresa) Saunders, Sr., Mickey Saunders, Tammy King, Esther (James) Fattig, Starla Balabon, Penny Lynann (Darren) Johnson, Charles (Tina) Robinson, Angel (Charles) Stagner, and a step-daughter Debra (Tim) Culver; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Wayne Sample, Sr., Larry (Mary) Sample, Ernest (Tammy) Parker; sisters Mercedes Holbert and Anita (Tom) Helton.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Charles Robinson, Sr., and second husband Louie Springs, and brother Estel Sample

She lived life by her faith in God. She loved to bake and cook. She loved to sing, and she played the guitar when she was younger, but most of all she loved her family more than anything.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 16, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Services will be Friday, February 17, 2023, at 1:00pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Stewartsville Cemetery, Stewartsville, MO.

Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Amberwell Hospital in Hiawatha. Joey was 
born August 24, 1960, in Hiawatha, the son of Roy Earl and Carolyn (Coon)
 Walker.

He graduated in 1976 from Atchison High 
School and earned an Associate Degree in Accounting from Saint Joseph 
College and was in the Army National Guard. He and Becky Weber were 
married in 1992 at Sacred Heart Church and later divorced in 2020. Joey 
was employed by Midwest Grain Products for 28 years as a Modified Starch
 Operator before taking disability.

Survivors include three sons, Spencer (Haley) Walker of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Kyler and Bryant Walker of Montezuma;&nbsp; one
 daughter, Taylor Marie (Dr. Collin) Wright of Montezuma; two sisters, 
Tammy (Jeff) Schuler of Atchison and Tina (TJ) Purdy of Mayetta; and two
 brothers Robby Walker of Atchison, and Cory Walker of Omaha, Nebraska. 
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Timothy and 
Toby Walker.

Graveside service will be held at Sunset 
Memorial Gardens, Atchison on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 1:00 PM with

Stewartsville, Missouri……Doris G. Keller, age 95, was born March 4, 1927 in Turney, Missouri the daughter of Charles and Sallie (Burnett) Sloan and passed away February 10, 2023.

Doris graduated from Plattsburg High School Class of 1945. After High School Doris went to college in Maryville, Missouri where she obtained her Teaching Certification and she went on to teach at Hemple School House, St. Francis, and Starfield Schools. On May 14, 1949 she married Norman C. Keller. To this union three children were born.

She was involved in many community clubs and attended Bethany Christian Church. Doris was member of Jolly Workers, Canasta Club, and Order of the Eastern Star. Doris was a loving Wife, Mother, Sister and Grandmother.&nbsp;

Doris is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman; grand-daughter Juli Anne Mann; and nine brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Mann; two sons, Gary Keller and Kenneth Keller; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

James Francis Merget, 77, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023.

James was born at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California to John Russell Merget and Carolyn Marie (Alves) Merget on October 17, 1945. He grew up in Southern California as “#3” out of four brothers and graduated from Loyola High School. James proudly and humbly served his country in Vietnam as an Army Medic. After his tour in Vietnam, James enjoyed traveling Europe before receiving his Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from the University of California Los Angeles.

James began a long and successful Real Estate career in Lake Hughes, California. He served as the Secretary and Treasurer of Lake Hughes-Lake Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce and was owner, broker and realtor of Lake Hughes Realty. Later, James was the owner and founder of the Lake Hughes Center. James met the love of his life, Sharon Lea Williams, to whom he married in 1981 and the couple had two children, Matthew and Lauren. In 2000, he and Sharon relocated to Overland Park, Kansas and James split his time between California and Kansas. He remained active in the Lake Hughes community until 2018 when he retired and moved to Kansas City.

James was a lover of nature, adventure and lifelong learning. He was deeply philosophical and enjoyed living his life freely. Throughout his life, James lived by the adage “…leave things better than you found it,” his philosophical North Star and cornerstone of his legacy. Ultimately, his life is a testament to that adage. Lives of those he touched are richer and fuller as a result of knowing him and the world is a better place because of him.

James’ legacy will continue through his family and friends, a conscious tribute to his memory. James lived a quiet, but exceptional life. A deliberate life worthy of being commended. In the end, James was surrounded by immeasurable love and comfort from those who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Merget and Carolyn Merget, his wife, Sharon Lea (Williams) Merget and his brother, John Merget.

Survivors include his brothers, Paul Merget, Anaheim, California and Bill Merget (Diane), Sebastopol, California; children, Matthew Merget, Olathe, Kansas, and Lauren Mannschreck (Mitchell) Smithville, Missouri; grandchildren, Henry James Mannschreck and Dalton Lea Mannschreck.

They became parents of two children.In 1952 Vannie and Curtis moved to Oregon. Vannie was a housewife. Vannie passed away on February 9, 2023 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was preceded in death in 2000 by her husband of 58 years, Curtis; brothers, Charles, Ray, and George Leffel; and sister, Elsie Burk.Survivors include her son, Curtis Ray "Tim" Dannar and wife Phyllis; daughter, Susie Dannar, with whom she made her home; brother, Ira "Mike" Leffel; three grandsons; several great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
