Donna Louise Hundley Hawk, 96, of Littleton, Colorado passed away September 12, 2025.

Donna was born on October 5, 1928, the daughter of Floyd and Frieda Eisele Hundley in Atchison, Kansas. She was a 1946 graduate of Atchison High School. Donna was&nbsp;employed as a secretary at the Atchison Specialty Company until her marriage to Jack H.&nbsp;Hawk on March 20, 1949, at the First Presbyterian Church Atchison.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 55 years, Jack H. Hawk, a son, Douglas E. Hawk, a granddaughter Jami E. Hawk, and a brother, Robert F. Hundley. Donna is survived by 2 sons, David (Gina) Hawk, and Daniel (Heidi) Hawk, 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Donna will be buried at Mt. Vernon Cemetery after a family graveside service at a later date.

Nancy Beth DeMott, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 11th, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on September 15th, 1936, in Clearmont, Missouri, Nancy was a stalwart, pillar of the Hopkins/Pickering communities where she lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to her family and community.

Nancy was the devoted wife of Richard A. DeMott, with whom she shared a wonderful 68 years of marriage. Together, they raised a loving family, including their sons, Mike DeMott and Mark (Deb) DeMott, and daughters, Rhonda (Steve) Schmidt and Heather (Bill) Pistole, all of Maryville. Her family was her pride and joy, and she was a doting grandmother to Beth (Eric) Hornbuckle, Drew (Kameron) DeMott, Gary (Savannah Bushman) DeMott, Amber (Kenneth) Hanna, Dana (Trevor) Coleman, Derek (Rachael) DeMott, Jayla (Brian) McGary, Bryce Schmidt, Dalton Pistole, Garrett (Autumn) Pistole, and Carson (Jasmyn) Pistole. Nancy was also blessed with numerous great-grandchildren, Rylee, Reese, Ridge, Dawsyn, Brynlee, Kreyton, Makenna, Whit, Brooks, Woods, Wells, Kollin, Addysin, and Carter, several in-laws and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her dearly.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Orville Porterfield and Verla Pauline Porterfield, her brothers, Cople and Denny Porterfield, and her sister, Marcia (Porterfield) Thompson. She is survived by her brother, Tillie (Karen) Porterfield of Maryville, and her sister, Mary Willrich of Atlantic, IA.

A proud graduate of Hopkins High School, class of 1954, Nancy excelled in sports, playing basketball and volleyball. After high school she started work at Nodaway Valley Bank and joined a bowling league. Her passion for sports continued throughout her life, as she was an avid supporter of Bearcat football and basketball games and cheered for her grandchildren in all their activities. Nancy's career as an office secretary spanned 30 years at St. Joseph Light and Power in Maryville, MO, where she was known for her dedication and professionalism.

After retirement, Nancy continued to serve her community by volunteering at the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary. She was also known for her green thumb in the garden, her famous ham balls, and her love of dancing with Richard. Together, they traveled extensively, creating cherished memories both across the country and abroad.

There will be a visitation for friends and family at the Bram Funeral Home Wednesday October 15, 2025 from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm.

Nancy's life will be celebrated at a funeral service on Thursday, October 16th, 2025, at 10:00 am at the First Christian Church in Maryville, Missouri. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Drew DeMott, Gary DeMott, Derek DeMott, Bryce Schmidt, Dalton Pistole, Garrett Pistole, and Carson Pistole. Nancy will be laid to rest at the Hopkins Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Coleman Cemetery or The National Kidney Foundation in Nancy's memory. Arrangements are being handled by Bram Funeral Home.

Brenda Dianne Kerns, 64 of Savannah, MO went to be with the Lord Friday, October 10, 2025. She was born February 1, 1961 to Ralph and Mary Rose (Warner) Farmer. She married Robert W. Kerns in St Joseph, MO on July 21, 1984 and he preceded her in death on July 4, 2004.

For many years, Brenda shared her love of learning and teaching with countless students at Amazonia Elementary School, where she inspired young minds with patience, creativity, and kindness. After retiring from the public school system, Brenda continued to touch children’s lives through teaching at Country Kids Learning Center, where she remained a beloved part of the community.

Outside of the classroom, Brenda enjoyed cheering on the Saints/Mustangs baseball team and the Kansas City Chiefs, attending games and sharing her love of sports with friends and family. Above all, she deeply loved and was incredibly proud of her son, Allen, who was the light of her life.

She is survived by her son, Allen (Shannon) Kerns of Savannah; sisters, Linda (Olen) Reed of Gower, MO &amp; Laura Farmer of Savannah; mother-in-law Mary Kay Kerns of Savannah, brothers-in-law Tony (Teresa) Kerns of Angleton, Tx &amp; Devon (Stacy) Kerns of Savannah. Along with multiple nieces &amp; nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, parents, and father-in-law, Robert W. Kerns.

Alexander Hernandez passed away on September 6, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa, where he had resided for more than three decades. He was born on January 8, 1939, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Joseph R. Hernandez and Louise (Saldiviar) Hernandez. Of his siblings, Alex is survived by one sister, Marie Carrillo. He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 30 years, Karry Vasey and his siblings, Mike Hernandez, Josephine (Hernandez) Garcia, Ralph Hernandez and Jessie Hernandez.

Alex graduated from Christian Brothers High School, where his education laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to discipline, service, and excellence. After graduating, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Spain, where his proficiency in Spanish proved valuable. This experience enhanced his commitment to service and expanded his global outlook.

After his military service, Alex pursued what became a decades-long career with Kmart Corporation, where he was recognized for his professionalism, management skills, and dedication. Upon retirement from KMart, he remained active through work in property management and by contributing his time and efforts to volunteer service, reflecting his steadfast commitment to helping others.

Alex’s personal life was marked by strong family ties and a devotion to faith. He married Carolyn Baker in 1970 in Madison, WI. They began their family with the birth of daughter Beth and soon after their son Joe was born. The young family lived in several Midwest cities as Alex advanced in his retail management career with Kmart. After his marriage to Carolyn ended, Alex relocated from Omaha to Des Moines, Iowa. Beginning a new chapter of his life, Alex met and married Karry Vasey. Alex and Karry enjoyed many years together traveling, dining out, time with family and friends, watching sports and staying involved with their Lutheran Church of Hope community.

Alex will be fondly remembered by his surviving children, step-children and their families: daughter, Beth Di Leva and son Joe (Brenda) Hernandez; granddaughter, Jordan Hernandez and grandson, Quinn Di Leva; step-grandchildren Nicole Casada, Robbie Casada, Bre (Brandon) Roberts and Bracen McCarty; three step-great-grandsons Kyren, Jaxton and Copelan Roberts; three step-sons, Steven (Diane) Rullestad, Scott (Pam) Rullestad and Shelley Rullestad; six step-grandchildren, Justin Rullestad, Kasey Rullestad, Jill (Eric) Johnson, Korey (Tara) Rullestad, Dr. Elizabeth (Mark) Rullestad-McAllister, Thomas Rullestad; and, step-great-grandchildren, Rhonda, Dakota, Josephine, Eloise, Isabelle, Adam, David, Maisie and Amelia.

Alex was dedicated to service, integrity, family, and community. He is remembered for his perseverance, generosity, and purposeful life, leaving a legacy of commitment and strength admired by those who knew him.

Kellen Charles Wilke, 17, of Rosendale, MO passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. He was born in San Diego, CA on September 14, 2008 to Amber (Hewitt) Lockard and Keefe Wilke and they both survive of their homes.

Kellen was a bright light in the lives of all who had the honor of knowing him. His journey through life was marked by compassion, love, and an everlasting trust in God. He attended the Rosendale Christian Church. Kellen enjoyed the outdoors, working on the farm with his grandpas, playing with his little sisters, playing football, and riding anything that would go fast. His passing leaves an empty place in the hearts of his friends, family, and countless others he impacted. We ask only that you remember him for the way he lived and the significant influence he had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

His journey through life was marked by compassion, love, and an everlasting trust in God. He attended the Rosendale Christian Church. Kellen enjoyed the outdoors, working on the farm with his grandpas, playing with his little sisters, playing football, and riding anything that would go fast. His passing leaves an empty place in the hearts of his friends, family, and countless others he impacted. Richard R. Calloway Sr., 76, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2025.

He was born September 25, 1949 in St. Joseph to Earl and Marjorie (Frogge) Calloway. Richard grew up in the North End, graduating from Lafayette High School in 1968.

On August 12, 1967, Richard married Jura Louise Bridger. She survives of the home.

He was a carpet layer with his brother for a few years, then went to work at St. Joseph Power &amp; Light in 1975, retiring in 2011 as a coal handler.

Richard enjoyed gardening and doing autobody work and painting cars in his garage. He especially liked having a cold beer, sitting on his stool in the kitchen, while listening to classic country music.

Family meant the most to him, with the Chiefs being a close second. Richard loved his family, loved spending time with them, and was so proud of them. He leaves a legacy of many great family get-togethers, his homemade barbecue sauce, and his example of a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara Miller; brother, Earl “Boot” Calloway; sister-in-law, Charlotte Calloway; brother-in-law, Joe Pflugradt; and his beloved dog, Woody.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jura; children, Janey Calloway and Ricky Calloway (Dana); grandchildren, Kenzie Merling (Alex), Chase Simpson (Kelci), Ravyn Whisenand (Daniel Sweet), Luke Whisenand, Kaia Calloway, and Kaden Calloway; great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Waylon, and Macklin; siblings, Sharon Pflugradt, Carl Calloway, and Ross Calloway (Rhonda); numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Richard Calloway, Sr. September 25, 1949-October 9, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joshua Loren Pohl, who left us peacefully, surrounded by family and closest friends, on Thursday morning at the age of 25.

A dedicated and talented young man, Josh was a proud graduate of Missouri Western State University (MWSU) with a degree in Convergent Journalism. During his time at MWSU, he made a significant mark, serving as the Editor in Chief of the Griffon News and garnering several well-deserved Journalism awards.

Beyond his academic achievements, Josh's commitment to service was evident in his youth. He achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and was a National Youth Leadership Trainer (NYLT), demonstrating his early passion for leadership and mentorship. Professionally, he enjoyed his role as the Marketing Merchandising Director at Hy-Vee. However, he would often joke that his favorite job was being his identical twin brother, Jacob's, personal butler.

Joshua and Jacob were inseparable—a dynamic duo, except for Josh's solo, week-long excursion through Europe. He cherished the time he spent with his nephews, Max and Tyler, and his niece, Peyton, as well as his close-knit group of friends. Among his friends, he was the indispensable communication director, event planner, and "mother hen"—always ensuring everyone was organized and cared for.

Josh was a man of diverse passions. He was an avid movie-goer and lovingly curated an extensive Funko Pop collection. His eclectic taste in music meant his playlists truly had something for everyone.

Loyal, organized, and detail-oriented, Josh was above all funny, caring, and loving beyond measure. His willingness to help anyone was unmatched, a testament to the remarkable young man he was. His radiant presence, thoughtful spirit, and infectious humor will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Joshua was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Sondra Carter; his paternal grandparents, Irving and Erma Pohl; his uncles, Jay Muller and Mike Goacher; and his great-grandmothers, Lois Snipes and P. Fern Simmons.

Joshua Pohl November 18, 1999-October 9, 2025

Elmer G. Fangman, 90, was born in Seneca/Axtell Kansas on January 28, 1935, and died on October 8, 2025.

The son of Paul and Florence Fangman, he grew up on the farm outside of Seneca and started working it at age 7, driving horses plowing the fields at age 12. &nbsp;He was educated in Wildcat, spending grades 1-8 in a four room schoolhouse.

He attended Maur Hill Prep as a boarding student and graduated in 1953. He started at St. Benedict’s College in 1953. Considering the priesthood, he moved into St. Benedict’s Abbey monastery to begin his novitiate on July 11, 1955. &nbsp;He withdrew for health reasons but remained a lifelong friend of the Abbey. &nbsp;He took time off during college to work in bridge construction and in the elevator at Lincoln Grain. &nbsp;In 1958 he graduated from St. Benedict’s College with a degree in political science.

On May 30, 1959, he married Anne E. Supple of Atchison, a graduate of Mount St. Scholastica College. &nbsp;He loved Anne and valued her strength and insight throughout their married life as they raised nine children together. &nbsp;They moved to Dodge City, Kansas, where he taught Political Science, English and Religion at St. Mary of the Plains High School during the 1959-1960 school year.

He served in and earned an Honorable Discharge from the Kansas National Guard in September of 1960.

Elmer taught Citizenship and Social Studies at Central Jr. and Sr. High School in Lawrence, KS during the 1960-1965 school years. He was so appreciated by his students that they secretly ran a county-wide campaign and elected him as Constable of Douglas County, complete with badge and handcuffs.

In the evenings and summers of 1960-1964, he studied and earned a Master’s of Science in Education and Counseling from the University of Kansas while he and Anne also were growing their family to include 5 children. During that time, he also served in the United States Army for six months and earned an Honorable Discharge in July, 1963 as an E4.

In the 1965-67 academic years he designed the counseling program and operated as the only guidance counselor for 800 students at Northgate School in Kansas City, MO. &nbsp;During the summers of those 1966 and 1967 years he worked as an employment counselor for the &nbsp;Missouri State Employment Service.

Elmer was one of 30 selected out of 1200 applicants for a National Defense Education program designed to educate Deans of Students at the University of Missouri due to an influx of students into higher education nationally. &nbsp;From 1967 to 1970, he and Anne lived in Columbia, Missouri where he was a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Missouri. &nbsp;Elmer completed all the course work and exams for his Doctor of Education degree in counseling and student personnel services in 1967-1969. &nbsp;

In 1968, he was appointed an Instructor on the academic staff, an Assistant to the Dean and an Academic Advisor in the College of Education at the University of Missouri. &nbsp;He was elected to the University’s chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. &nbsp;As part of his work, he was engaged with the programs of 3,800 undergraduate education students. &nbsp;

Through the years of his PhD program, he and Anne’s family grew to 8 children. &nbsp;As he was beginning his dissertation he was recruited back to St. Benedict’s College for the position of Dean of Students and felt it was more important to return to Atchison in 1970 and help St. Benedict’s College as Dean of Students and to assist in the coming merger with Mount St. Scholastica College. &nbsp;As a result, he sacrificed the completion of his PhD in the service of Benedictine College and in earning enough to support his family.

During the 30 years between August of 1970 to his retirement in August of 2000, Elmer held the position of Dean of Students and later also of Vice President of Student Affairs. It is hard to encapsulate his contributions to the life of the college but at various times, his responsibilities included counseling, all athletic programs, all college facilities, financial aid, student activities, health services, career planning and placement, intramural programs, foreign student programs, student publications and housing. In addition, in 1982, he was selected as Administrator of the Year at Benedictine College. He raised the money and sponsored the first Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) program on a college campus. &nbsp;FOCUS has grown to over 210 campuses at this point.

Upon retirement in 2000, he became a licensed professional counselor at All-Faiths Counseling Center. &nbsp;

He was a founding board member of Atchison Achievement Services and helped spearhead the mainstreaming of Down Syndrome children into the Atchison Public Schools. &nbsp;Recognitions of his service to others included the Kansas Monk Award from Benedictine College and the Lumen Vitae Medal from St Benedict’s Abbey.

He was a steady hand through years of tumult and a sought-after advisor and confidant of many. &nbsp;His life’s vocation were his family, his faith and the success of all members of the Benedictine family, with a special attention to the thousands of students he helped shepherd. &nbsp;His life was one of service to others.

Elmer is survived by his children, Dan (Dolly) Fangman, Joan (John) Schuster, Mike (Nancy) Fangman, Susan (Craig) Husting, Paul (Doug) Fangman, John (Jo) Fangman, Colleen (Les) Hubble and Matt (Kathy) Fangman. &nbsp;In addition, he is survived by 24 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Lester (Janet) and John (Fran) and sister, Janie (Joe) Werner. Preceding him in death are his wife, Anne E. (Supple) Fangman and their daughter, Patricia Fangman. Also preceding him in death are his parents and his siblings, Charles, Gilbert, Leonard, Ruth (Haug) and Sr. Esther Fangman. &nbsp;

Mass of Christian burial will be on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Benedict Church in Atchison with burial to follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be on Sunday, Oct. 12th at 3:00 p.m. at St. Benedict Church with visitation to follow until 5:00 p.m.

Myrtle Leota Auxier, 85 of Kansas City, MO, passed away October 6, 2025.

She was born on March 25, 1940, to Orval Chesley Richards, Sr., and Mildred Edna (Hersh) Richards in St. Joseph, MO. Myrtle grew up in Andrew County and graduated from Savannah High School.

On June 12, 1959, she was united in marriage to Lowell Roger Auxier. After their marriage they lived in St. Joseph and moved to Gower in 1963 where they made their home and raised their family. In 1991, they moved to Kansas City, MO.

Myrtle worked for the East Buchanan School District as a teacher’s aide for several years. She loved sewing and crafting and most of all spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Orval and Mildred Richards; her brother Orval Richards, Jr.; and her sister Florene Robertson.

Myrtle is survived by her husband Lowell Auxier; children Roger (Bonnie) Auxier, Rick (Jean) Auxier and Cheryl (John) Roush; grandchildren Emily (Joseph) Howell, Zeb (Aimee) Auxier, Sara (Seth) Parker, Ben Auxier, Hana (Luke) Thomas, Nathan Roush, Alyssa Roush, Luke Roush, Erika Roush, and Jessica Roush; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, October 13th at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home in Gower. Jim Lee Bartlow, 82, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away October 9, 2025. &nbsp;Jim was born May 24, 1943 in St. Joseph to Charles and Nora Bartlow.

He graduated from Lafayette High School and served in the United States Army, including a tour in Vietnam.

Jim worked as a firefighter in St. Joseph for 29 years.

On May 14, 1971 he married Christina Szczepanik, who survives him. &nbsp;He is also survived by their three children: Merri Beth Means (Jeff), Jaime Cortez (Mike), and Charlie Bartlow; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons, his brother, Jerry Bartlow, and his in-law the Szczepanik family.

Jim was a member of St. James Catholic Church. &nbsp;He loved sports and was a lifelong Missouri Tigers Fan. &nbsp;Until his illness, he rarely missed his grandchildren's activities and enjoyed talking about all the great things they were doing in their lives.

Hubert I. "Bud" Puckett, cherished husband, beloved father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on the 6th of October, 2025, at his home in Rockaway Beach, Missouri. Born on July 16, 1943, in Bolckow, Missouri, Bud lived a fulfilling life defined by dedication to his family. Bud married the love of his life, Sharon (Pfleiderer), on July 8, 1961 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Their marriage was a lifetime of love and mutual support that flourished for 64 remarkable years. Together, they raised four children, Susan, Rick, Scott, and Mark, who were blessed to grow up in a loving home.

In his working life, Bud devoted 37 years of service to Wire Rope from which he retired.

Bud enjoyed many pastimes. He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. He enjoyed fishing and watching westerns and reruns finding pleasure in the familiar stories that reminded him of simpler times.

Anyone who knew Bud knew of his pride in his perfectly-kept yard, which was a reflection of his meticulous nature and love of beauty. He was even more proud of his children and grandchildren.&nbsp; For Bud, family always came first and he leaves a legacy of devotion and love not only with his family but with all who knew him.

Bud will be deeply missed by his wife, Sharon Puckett of the home; children, Susan Waller of St. Joseph, Rick Puckett of Rockaway Beach, Scott Puckett of Forsyth and Mark Puckett of St. Joseph; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He is also survived by his siblings, Jerry Puckett, Raymond Puckett, Joyce Moss all of St. Joseph and Connie Davis of Kansas City, MO.

Thomas E. “Tom” Moyers, 80, Mound City, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2025.

He was born November 23, 1944 in Louisville, Kentucky, to Tee and Lelia (Taylor) Moyers.

Tom proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 0217.

On October 19, 2021, Tom married Phyllis Pierce. She preceded him in death on September 2, 2025.

He worked on a farm in the Mound City area for many years, then was a mechanic at the Squaw Creek Truck Stop for years before opening his own repair shop. Later he worked as a cook at the Sac &amp; Fox Casino in Kansas before retirement.

Tom enjoyed watching Westerns, especially “Gunsmoke,” and birdwatching with Phyllis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his parents; daughter, Dorothy Pulliam; grandson, Eric Timothy; and siblings, Mable Roberts, Virginia Collins, Don Moyers, Ron Moyers, and Junior Moyers.

Betty Lucille (Williams) Powers was born August 7, 1925, in Alix, Arkansas, to George and Carmen (Dowdy) Williams. Betty lost her mother when she was just 5 years old and was set adrift with her younger sister, Wilma Gene (“Willie”), who was her lifelong best friend and boon companion, her comfort and strength. The girls lived for a time with their maternal grandparents, William and Viola (Holloway) Dowdy in Williams, OK, before returning to Ozark, AR, to live with their paternal grandmother, Maude (Bateman) Williams. &nbsp;

Life with their grandmother was difficult. The poverty in which they grew up was notable, even for rural Arkansas during the Depression. Their grandmother took in laundry, and Betty’s first job was baking pies for the local cafe.

Betty moved from Ozark to Atchison, KS, after high school to live with her father’s sister, Hattie (Williams) Davis (later, Kiehl) and was soon joined by Willie. Having escaped the poverty and tragedy of her childhood, Betty planted her feet firmly on the path of self-improvement, going to secretarial school and landing a job at “the phone company.” She began immediately to save money, a point of pride for her.

In 1951, Betty married William H. (“Bill”) Powers. The pair moved to Kansas City, where their son John was born. In 1953, they moved to Omaha, NE, where their daughter Janis and sons David and Daren were born.&nbsp;

Betty’s married life was nomadic, based on Bill’s career path, which always seemed to equate promotion with mobility. The family moved from Omaha to Tulsa, back again to Omaha, then again to Tulsa and on to Oklahoma City, then to McPherson, KS, on to LeMars, IA, and finally once more to Oklahoma City, where the couple retired.

In her “spare” time as a stay at home mother of a growing family and wife of a frequent business traveler, Betty began in Omaha to pursue two tracks of her creativity that she would continue for the rest of her life. She went to ”beauty school” and became a licensed cosmetologist and salon owner, and she took her first art class - a Life Drawing class at Joslyn Art Museum. She opened a full-service hair salon in her home (the Beauty Mark) and became a quarter owner of a tiny art gallery (the Art Mart) - both with the remodeling efforts of her very supportive husband.

Betty evolved from hairdresser to beautician, cosmetologist and teacher of Cosmetology - which she taught at one of the roughest high schools in Oklahoma City during the early days of busing, from 1969 to 1974.&nbsp;

In McPherson, Betty was a founder of Art in the Park, a juried arts festival. She was the President of the McPherson Arts and Crafts Association and the owner of Art Supplies and Creative Framing. She began the “Picture Lady” program that sent volunteers into the elementary schools to show and discuss art with children, and she was active in advocating for Children with Learning Disabilities.

Betty later founded a juried Art in the Park in LeMars, as well, and was the co-owner of Prairie Patchworks, a quilting kit business. She taught art privately and was active in establishing the practice of displaying art by local artists in the Floyd Valley Hospital and other businesses in LeMars.

Betty could be dazzling and daring; she was determined and deliberate. Having begun to pursue a college degree in the early 1970’s, she graduated in 1998, with a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Central Oklahoma (with a minor in Creative Writing.) She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education.

Betty continued to develop as an artist throughout her life; she was a painter (in multiple media - oil, acrylic, watercolor, collage), a sculptor and ceramicist. After she “retired”, she became a published author (of poetry, short stories and a corn cookbook) and illustrator, as well as the author of at least one screenplay - and an Editor of the New Plains Review. &nbsp;She co-founded and was an active member of writing groups Writers of the Purple Page and Play Pens.

She was vibrant and vivacious, with a marvelous sense of style. Betty used to say, “When you look good, you feel good; when you feel good, you do good.” Always fashionable, her taste was fun and colorful. &nbsp;A natural brunette with thick hair (which she described as “straight as a board”) she changed its color every few years and was equally glamorous as a blonde, redhead, or with black hair or chestnut. When it finally turned white, it was every bit as lovely as any of the other colors she had sported.

Betty was a lifelong learner. She could bowl, tap dance, hula hoop, roller skate, ride a horse, water ski, kill a snake with a well-aimed rock and name dozens of trees by the shape of their leaves. Always an avid card player, after she retired, she learned to play bridge - and to golf.

She was an intrepid traveler who visited nearly every state in the Union (save Alaska) and a good bit of Western Europe. She was always ready to try something new.

Betty was an inveterate self-help devotee, constantly seeking mental, emotional, spiritual, &nbsp;physical, financial, artistic and educational improvement. She was a devout Roman Catholic, having converted to marry Bill - conversion was required by the Church at that time, but she embraced it wholeheartedly.

She found no contradiction in also being a knowledgeable and dedicated astrologer and numerologist. A Leo with Libra rising, when everything in the world seemed to be going wrong all at once, she would pronounce, “Mercury must be retrograde!” and that answered everything.

Her philosophical North Star was the Golden Rule. She believed that, though you cannot control many things in life, you can control how you respond to them. She very much believed that you could will yourself to be what you wanted to be. She willed herself to be happy.

Betty had a deep streak of “You can’t make me!” matched with “I’ll show you!” that served her well all her life. When she made up her mind to do something, she did it.

In spite of her own fractured childhood - or perhaps because of it - Betty held firm to the belief that family is everything. She was the best mother anyone could ever have. She taught her children to believe in themselves, to try new things and to follow their hearts. And they knew in their bones that they mattered and were loved.&nbsp;

Betty was predeceased by her husband Bill Powers, her sons John and Daren Powers and by her sister, Willie Eiche. She is survived by her son David Powers and his wife Tonna, her daughter Janis Powers and her husband Kelly Work, her grandchildren Alex Powers, Chandra Powers Wersch and her husband Jared, Andrew Powers and his wife Kallie, Michael Work and Elizabeth Work, and her great grandchildren Avelyn Powers, Karsyn Powers and Addisyn Powers.&nbsp;

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Benedict Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A visitation with the family will be Friday, October 17th from 5:30 until 7:00 P.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Betty Powers August 7, 1925-September 27, 2025

Rhoda Jane Fisher, age 74, formerly of Atchison, KS, died on September 30, 2025, in Salina, KS, at the Pinnacle Park Nursing Facility, where she has resided for the last few years. &nbsp;

Rhoda was born on February 16, 1951, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of James Oliver Burton and Rhoda (Hunt) Burton. She attended schools in Leavenworth, Kansas.&nbsp;

Rhoda worked for a short time in her youth, but was most proud of being a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed knitting and loved to make all her grandbabies blankets. She enjoyed watching soap operas and Jerry Springer. She was a member of the Juneteenth Committee and always looked forward to providing whatever she could to make that celebration successful.&nbsp;

She was married to Harold J. “Herbie” Fisher on February 4, 1972, in Platte City, MO. Herbie preceded her in death on October 29, 2010. Rhoda Jane Fisher, age 74, formerly of Atchison, KS, died on September 30, 2025, in Salina, KS, at the Pinnacle Park Nursing Facility, where she has resided for the last few years. &nbsp;Rhoda was born on February 16, 1951, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of James Oliver Burton and Rhoda (Hunt) Burton. She attended schools in Leavenworth, Kansas.&nbsp;Rhoda worked for a short time in her youth, but was most proud of being a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed knitting and loved to make all her grandbabies blankets. She enjoyed watching soap operas and Jerry Springer. She was a member of the Juneteenth Committee and always looked forward to providing whatever she could to make that celebration successful.&nbsp;She was married to Harold J. “Herbie” Fisher on February 4, 1972, in Platte City, MO. Herbie preceded her in death on October 29, 2010. Rhoda Fisher February 16, 1951-September 30, 2025

Marilyn Pritchett 82, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at Center Point Hospital in Independence, MO following a brief illness.

Marilyn was born on October 3rd, 1942 in St. Joseph, MO to Joseph and Marie Cohrs. She would grow up just outside of St. Joseph with her brother Raymond and sister Joann, where her love for animals would blossom. She would later meet Donald Pritchett of St. Joseph, and at 18 years old the two would marry on November 26, 1960. The couple would have three children, two daughters, Donna and Kathy, and a son, Robert. Marilyn would spend the next 30 years working for Whitaker Cable, Sherwood Medical, and finally Stetson Hat. Marilyn was married to Donald for 45 years until his passing in 2005. She would remain at her home in St. Joseph until 2020, when she entered Riverbend Heights Nursing Home in Lexington, Mo.

Among the many things Marilyn enjoyed in her life was the love of animals, but most of all horses. She also loved motorcycles, and would ride anytime she had the opportunity. She also enjoyed wholesome, family-oriented entertainment such as Little House on the Prairie, It’s a Wonderful Life, and various Hallmark programs. However, the true love of her life was her family, which included her husband and son, Judy (daughter-in-law,) and Jacob (grandson,) as well as all of her in-laws, nieces, and nephews. She was devoted to her family until her passing.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, her infant daughters, her brother and sister, and her parents.&nbsp;Marilyn was survived by her son and daughter-in-law, her grandson, and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;A graveside service will be held at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in St. Joseph on Saturday October 11, 2025 &nbsp;at 11:00 am under the direction of Rupp Funeral Home.

Helena Ann McKay 77, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2025 in a St Joseph, MO health care center. She was born January 16, 1948, the daughter of the late Kateryn and Ivan Ursulak. She graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School and worked at Kmart in various roles but mostly known as the front-end manager. Seven Michael Boyle, 20, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2025, in Atchison, Kansas.

Seven was born April 28, 2005, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Patrick and Lisa Boyle. He graduated from Atchison High School and Highland Technical Center for Building Trades in 2023. Seven loved his family, especially his nieces and nephews who he spoiled any chance he had. He was funny and had a contagious smile. He enjoyed going fishing and riding his minibike around town. Seven loved his car and truck; they were his pride and joy.

Seven is survived by his parents, brother Justin (Katelyn) Boyle, Atchison, KS, sisters Kayla (Robert) Kempin, Atchison, KS, and Cassandra (Bratten) Forbes, Effingham, KS, nieces and nephews Josie, Conner, Mason, Ryder, Ryleigh, Alexis, Drake, Hunter, Serenity, Gary, Harper, and Elleigh, and Grandma Becky Carr.

Mary Ann Marshall, 84, passed away peacefully on October 7th, 2025 surrounded with love.

Mary Ann graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart and went on to graduate from Rockhurst College with a Paralegal degree. &nbsp;Before retirement she worked for the law firm of Brown, Douglas &amp; Brown and also the law firm of Liles, Davidson, Tiemans &amp; Goins.

Mary Ann loved playing cards with her siblings every week and keeping in touch with and meeting new friends on Facebook. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence Werner and Dorothy (Schuwmacher) Werner; her son, Ronald "Ronnie" Marshall and the father of her children, Aubrey "Suds" Marshall.

Mary Ann gave love and support freely, &nbsp;Her kindness was felt by all she knew and loved.

She is survived by her children, Barb Marshall (Norman Stewart), Lawrence "Larry" Marshall; grandsons, Jeremy Marshall and David Marshall (Patrick Keith); great-grandchildren, Ryder Smith, Graclin Marshall and Aiden Storoz; bonus granddaughter, Nicole Stewart Ickes great-grandchildren, Breanne, Zachary, Christian and Ethan; bonus children adopted by love, Tammy Young and Dwayne Huss; her siblings, Lawrence (Bonnie) Werner, Frances Clemens (Bob), William (Veronica) Werner.

Shirley Genevieve Sarcione, 88, of Kansas City (North), Missouri, passed away peacefully on October, 7th, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Blue Springs, MO.

Shirley was born to Milford "Oren" and Daisy Poff on September 2, 1937, in Gentry County, Missouri and was a devoted member of the Church of God (7th Day), where she worshiped faithfully in many capacities throughout her life. Her quiet strength and unwavering devotion to God and family were the foundation of her life.

Shirley attended Spring Vale Academy for two years before graduating from Stanberry High School, and later pursued college studies.

Shirley held the position of president of the women’s group, The Mustard Seed, where she worked to strengthen the faith of others. She also shared her gifts as a teacher, leading classes and leaving a lasting impact on the lives of her students. She gave her time as both secretary and treasurer, carrying out her duties with care.

Shirley spent her working years helping others in many ways. She briefly worked at a school for children with special needs and later at her son’s school, where her gentle patience and compassionate spirit left a lasting impression. For 15 years, she worked at So-Fro Fabrics, a place where her love for color, texture, and creativity found a home. She was known for her uncanny ability to match threads and buttons, and she loved helping customers find just the right pieces for their sewing projects. Many who came in for supplies stayed to chat with Shirley, drawn to her kindness and warmth.

Shirley spent countless hours crocheting hats and blankets for her children and grandchildren. Every stitch was made with love. She also cared deeply about the world around her and made it a point to recycle metal and other materials, quietly doing her part to care for God’s creation. Shirley enjoyed gardening and found joy and peace in tending to her flowers and plants, nurturing beauty wherever she could.

Above all, Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She cared for her beloved husband, Arnold, with grace and dignity through his long battle with cancer. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the light of her life, and she showed her love not just in words, but in the small, steady acts of service and care that made a lasting impact.

Shirley was fortunate to share many friendships with Janet Terry, her best friend, and Phyllis Snyder her roommate of 15 years. Janet’s care, along with the kindness of Chris Duncan, brought Shirley great comfort by providing meals and support. Phyllis Snyder shared a special bond with Shirley and their friendship was full of laughter and mutual care. Phyllis was a good friend whose companionship allowed their time together to be filled with meaningful moments and lasting memories.
