Claudia Jo Payne, of Atchison, KS, passed away on March 2, 2026, at the Atchison Hospital. She was a fighter of countless health issues, but she persevered through them all. She was born on January 23, 1951, in Atchison, Kansas, to Clyde Richard Van Wey and Bettie Jean (Hundley) Van Wey. Claudia was a graduate of Atchison High School, class of 1969, where she cultivated lasting friendships and cherished memories. During high school, she married her sweetheart, Ray Payne, on November 16, 1968.

Throughout her life, Claudia nurtured her family as a dedicated homemaker and later transitioned to her role as an Assistant at the Salvation Army in Atchison. Her commitment to her family and her work reflected her strong values and connection to her community. A devoted mother, she is survived by her daughter, Ginger Smith of Horton, KS. Claudia is also survived by her brothers, Robert (Cheryl) Van Wey of Atchison, KS, and Dennis Van Wey of Lees Summit, MO; her sisters, Dorothy (Bill) Mercer of Wellington, MO, Danette (Francis) Brownfield of Polo, MO, and Garie Jean (Scot) Brownrigg of Welda, KS. She was blessed with five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, all of whom brought joy to her life. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ray, and her daughter, Cinnamon "DeeAnn" O'Donnell.

Claudia had a variety of hobbies that showcased her personality. She was an avid collector of Elvis memorabilia, all things unicorn-related and every new Disney move when they came out. Swimming was a passion she embraced throughout her life, and she always maintained a pool for her family and friends to enjoy. In her younger years, Claudia loved to go dancing and exploring different venues with her friends and loved old comedy, maintaining her sarcasm until the very end.

To honor and celebrate her life, family and friends are invited to a Visitation with Family on Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, with Rev. Jeremy Heppler OSB as officiant. She will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery. 

Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association or the Salvation Army. 

Claudia Jo Payne will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her spirit, love for life, and unwavering dedication to her family will forever be remembered.
