National Travel and Tourism Week is here and the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau wants to celebrate the week with community members after a very hard year for the industry.

Bureau Spokeswoman Beth Conway says this week has been celebrated for 38 years. 

“National Travel and Tourism Week was created by congress in 1983 just to recognize the economic power of travel and tourism in the United States,” Conway tells St. Joseph Post. 

Conway says the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau will be hosting a live radio broadcast by KKJO, 1550 FM, Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the downtown location, 911 Frederick.

“We’re going to be having some give-a-ways, some Geneo’s Pizza, some live interviews and then all week we’re going to be posting tourism facts on our social media channels to just kind of educate the public about the impact of travel in Bucanan County,” says Conway. 

Conway says tourism and travel was drastically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

“All of our museums had to shut down for a while. People weren’t traveling. They just weren’t going anywhere. Our businesses suffered. Our local businesses, restaurants, hotels, everybody suffered.”

A three-vehicle wreck in south St. Joseph late Monday
afternoon left a woman with severe burns.

St. Joseph police report a semi tractor-trailer ran into the
back of a car waiting to turn from Mason Road onto South 14th Street.
The impact pushed the car into oncoming traffic and it burst into flames after
hit nearly head on. Rescue crews had to help the driver, a woman described to
be in her 30s, escape the burning vehicle.

The woman has not been identified. She suffered major burns.

The crash forced the closing of Mason Road for hours. The investigation
continues.

Woman badly burned in three-vehicle wreck in south St. Joseph

Buchanan County continues to see a recent increase in COVID-19 cases. 

The St. Joseph Health Department reported 90 new cases in the county last week - nearly tripling the 33 cases reported the week before that.

Of the 90 new cases, 66 of those were reported in people age 49 or younger. People between age 20-29 accounted for 24 of those new cases.

"It's anybody's guess," said St. Joseph Health Department spokeswoman Stephanie Malita on why the younger demographic is seeing more cases. "Why that age range is being impacted more at this time with new positive cases."

There was only one new case reported over the weekend, but 14 new cases were reported Monday.

The county's positivity rate has also increased to 4.22 percent. That's up from 2.81 percent last week.

St. Joseph Health Department spokeswoman Stephanie Malita is hopeful that a mass vaccination clinic at the Civic Arena on Tuesday can help bring these case numbers back down.

"It's open to anybody," Malita said of the clinic. "Anyone that's 18 or older who lives in Missouri. We would welcome you at our clinic. The vaccine is free, there's no charge to you and we're trying to make it as convenient as possible."

People can still sign up for a vaccine by clicking&nbsp;<a href="https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/6270244045251540109/false#/invitation">this link</a>&nbsp;or by calling the St. Joseph Health Department at 816-271-4636. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins will be accepted from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday.

The department also added a clinic for May 11 - also at Civic Arena. There are 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine available for each clinic.&nbsp;

Government ID and proof of health insurance are not required to get the vaccine. A second dose clinic planned for Thursday, June 3 at the same location.&nbsp;

While the COVID-19 vaccine is available at pharmacies across St. Joseph, the health department is offering a new opportunity for more citizens to get the vaccine, since the Mosaic Community Clinic at the East Hills Shopping Center stopped giving first doses of the shot due to falling demand.

"In the meantime, some of the urgency has waned," Malita said of the vaccination rate. "People are not getting signed up to get those shots like they were at one point."

Buchanan County's vaccination rate remains low with 18.8 percent of residents initiating vaccination and only 15.3 percent of the population completing it.

Malita says the downtown location of this mass vaccination clinic Tuesday could be more convenient for those who live and work in the area and are still seeking a vaccine. 

She adds the department has access to more than enough doses of vaccine to hold several more clinics into the summer if needed.

"We're prepared to do one weekly into early summer if we have the demand for it," Malita said. "Our hope is we'll see a good response and have people sign up and get vaccinated. If we have that, then we'll add more dates."

Health officials express concern over rising COVID cases in Buchanan County

DEKALB COUNTY— A Missouri man was injured in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Monday in DeKalb County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Mercury passenger vehicle driven by Robert L. Cleveland, 59, King City, was southbound on U.S. 169 three miles north of Union Star.

The vehicle crossed the centerline, traveled off the west side of the road, struck an embankment and a tree.

Grand River ambulance transported Cleveland to Mosaic Life Care. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

“The
ride was incredible,” Schmitz tells St. Joseph Post. “We hit 150 (mph) going
down the runway and I kept thinking he’s got to slow down; he’s got to slow
down.&nbsp; The end of the runway is coming up.&nbsp; We neared the end of the
runway, he turned to go back up runway A and if it wasn’t for the seat belt
holding me in, I’m sure I would have went flying out the window on the
turn.&nbsp; What a rush that ride was."

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Jared A. Johnson, 32, Chillicothe, was southbound on a private drive five miles north of Cameron.

The vehicle crossed Willow Road one mile north of Route EE and traveled into a pond and became submerged. Cameron EMS transported Johnson to Cameron Regional Medical Center.

He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

It’s crunch time for state budget negotiators with the
constitutional deadline to pass a state budget fast approaching in Jefferson
City.

State Sen. Dan Hegeman of Cosby again serves as the Senate Appropriations
Committee chair and says the budget at the end of this session looks much
better than many thought it would at the beginning of this session.

“Last year at this time we were worried about the detrimental impacts
of COVID-19 and how it was going to affect our economy. So, we prepared a very
conservative budget last year,” Hegeman tells St. Joseph Post.

Hegeman gives a lot of credit to fellow Republican, Gov. Mike
Parson, for negotiating all the unknowns which faced the state during the
height of the coronavirus pandemic.

“You can attribute the fact that we have seen positive growth
in our economy to the governor of the state of Missouri, Mike Parson,”
according to Hegeman. “I think he managed the situation well and we’re bearing
the fruits of that right now.”

Hegeman says state revenue grew by 3½% to 4% this past year.

“As a hole, I think the state of Missouri is robust, resilient,
and has weathered this situation well,” Hegeman says.

Hegeman concedes some sectors of the Missouri economy haven’t
done as well as others. He says the legislature has used CARES Act funding to
help and awaits word from Washington on how the legislature can allocate the
latest coronavirus aid passed by Congress.

“We are not adjusting much of those funds in this year’s
fiscal budget,” Hegeman says. &nbsp;“We’ll
either address those in a special session or an extraordinary session or in
next year’s regular session in January.”

At present, legislators must work on the state budget for the
next fiscal year. Both the Senate and House have approved $34 billion budgets,
but the make-up of the budgets differ and those differences must be resolved
and a final spending blueprint for the next fiscal year passed by the end of
the legislative day Friday.

Both chambers agree on one thing:&nbsp; not to expand Medicaid. Lawmakers took a
controversial step when they refused to fund Medicaid expansion even though
voters approved expansion. Gov. Parson had included Medicaid expansion in his
budget proposal.

Hegeman insists though voters approved Medicaid expansion that
doesn’t require the legislature to fund it.

“The court made it very clear that the legislature still had
the appropriations authority over whether this expansion of Medicaid happens or
not,” Hegeman says. “So, there’s some discussion around that.”

It appears certain the decision will trigger a lawsuit.

Hegeman says the budget approved by the Senate last week
addresses the state’s biggest needs.

“It’s a budget that I think will address many of the needs in
the state of Missouri and some of them that we have been wanting to address for
some time,” Hegeman says.

The Senate budget includes $3.56 billion in state aid to
schools and $113 million for school bus transportation.

Deadline looms for Missouri lawmakers to agree to $34B state budget

The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds drew huge crowds to the Sound and Speed Airshow at Rosecrans Memorial Airport in St. Joseph this weekend.

The Sound of Speed Airshow released a total of 31,000 general admission tickets for this weekends airshow.&nbsp;

Airport General Manager Abe Forney says 30,000 general admission tickets were originally released for Saturday and Sunday, however the airport saw a need to release an additional 1,000 tickets for Sunday so all who wanted to attend had the opportunity.&nbsp;

Both ticket days released all of the general admission tickets available to the public. General admission tickets were issued for free.

The airshow also sold Flight Line Club and Premium Boxes to the show.&nbsp;

The Sound of Speed Airshow was a hit in St. Joseph

The Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is back after it was withdrawn from use earlier.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The CDC and FDA have recommended use of the vaccine again and Doniphan County has turned this recommendation into action by starting the use of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine this week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Doniphan County Health Department Administrator Sheryl Pierce&nbsp;says the county had administered 200 doses of the Johnson and Johnson&nbsp;vaccine before it was&nbsp;previously withdrawn from use.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We had a large list, a huge list of people interested in that Johnson and Johnson&nbsp;before we even received it,” Pierce tells St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pierce says the county continues to use the Moderna vaccine as well but&nbsp;has yet to administer the Pfizer vaccine.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are asking anybody that wants the Pfizer that’s 16 and 17 years old to give us a call,” says Pierce.&nbsp;“We’re making a list and if we can get enough interest in the Pfizer vaccine we will go ahead and get it.”&nbsp;

Pierce says Doniphan County has administered 1,660 doses of vaccine&nbsp;overall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have about 6,000 people in our county that are eligible for this vaccine, 18 and older and we have vaccinated probably about 22-25% of these people,” says Pierce.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pierce&nbsp;says&nbsp;there aren’t lines or waiting lists keeping&nbsp;you&nbsp;from receiving the&nbsp;available&nbsp;vaccines&nbsp;now.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Pretty much you can call and you can get in and get it.”&nbsp;

By WHITNEE ICE&nbsp;&nbsp;St. Joseph Post&nbsp;The Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is back after it was withdrawn from use earlier.&nbsp;&nbsp;The CDC and FDA have recommended use of the vaccine again and Doniphan County has turned this recommendation into action by starting the use of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine this week.&nbsp;&nbsp;Doniphan County Health Department Administrator Sheryl Pierce&nbsp;says the county had administered 200 doses of the Johnson and Johnson&nbsp;vaccine before it was&nbsp;previously withdrawn from use.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We had a large list, a huge list of people interested in that Johnson and Johnson&nbsp;before we even received it,” Pierce tells St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pierce says the county continues to use the Moderna vaccine as well but&nbsp;has yet to administer the Pfizer vaccine.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We are asking anybody that wants the Pfizer that’s 16 and 17 years old to give us a call,” says Pierce.&nbsp;“We’re making a list and if we can get enough interest in the Pfizer vaccine we will go ahead and get it.”&nbsp;Pierce says Doniphan County has administered 1,660 doses of vaccine&nbsp;overall.&nbsp;&nbsp;“We have about 6,000 people in our county that are eligible for this vaccine, 18 and older and we have vaccinated probably about 22-25% of these people,” says Pierce.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pierce&nbsp;says&nbsp;there aren’t lines or waiting lists keeping&nbsp;you&nbsp;from receiving the&nbsp;available&nbsp;vaccines&nbsp;now.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Pretty much you can call and you can get in and get it.”&nbsp;

St. Joseph sees 22 new COVID-19 cases; Mosaic reports "minimal" patient count

CLINTON COUNTY —&nbsp; A Missouri man died in an accident just after 7a.m. Sunday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Mini Cooper driven by Shane C. Bright, 49, Holt, was westbound on Route J at Springtown Road seven miles south of Plattsburg.

The vehicle crossed the center line, began sliding,&nbsp; traveled off the north side of the road and struck the ground with the undercarriage. The rear of the vehicle than struck a tree.&nbsp;

Bright was pronounced dead at the scene. The Clinton County Coroner transported him to Frontier Forensics. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

HARRISON COUNTY —A Missouri teen was injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Saturday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Toyota Rav 4 driven by Alfred K. Macali, 28, Gladstone, was eastbound on 12th Street at Route N in Eagleville.

A 14-year-old Eagleville boy was northbound on Route N and failed to stop at the posted stop sign. The Toyota crossed the center line, traveled off the north side of the road to avoid the bicycle. The bicycle struck the Toyota in the front passenger side and the teen was ejected.

A private vehicle transported the teen to Harrison County Community Hospital. Macali was not injured and properly restrained a the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Timothy Q. Metcalf, 20, Newtown, was eastbound on U.S. 136 twelve miles east of Princeton.

The car struck a deer in the road and then rolled backward into a ditch. Mercer County Ambulance transported Metcalf to Putnam County Hospital.&nbsp; The MSHP did not report seat belt information.

The Thunderbirds spark excitement in St. Joseph this weekend

ANDREW COUNTY —A juvenile was injured in an accident just after 10p.m. Friday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Ford F380 driven by Cory S. Auxier, 50, Agency, was southbound on the Belt Highway at County Line Road in St. Joseph.

The driver failed to obey the traffic control device as reported in the MSHP crash log.

 A westbound 2014 Ford&nbsp; SUV driven by Nicole M. Compton, 36, St. Joseph, struck the drivers side of the F380.

A private vehicle transported an 11-year-old St. Joseph girl in the F380 to Mosaic Life Care. The drivers were not injured. Auxier was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Peterbilt semi driven by Alan B. Leonard, 57, Sutherland, IA., was&nbsp; northbound on Interstate 29 six miles south of Mound City.

The semi traveled off the west side of the road, struck an emergency crossover, went airborne, struck the ground and came to rest in the median.

Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Leonard to Mosaic Life Care. He&nbsp; was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Tickets are flying for the Sound of Speed Airshow

Missouri Farm Bureau President Garrett Hawkins tells a
Congressional hearing many farmers are using the Internet to grow their
operations while others are stuck in the past, because they have no broadband
access.

Hawkins gives members of Congress a slice of life story to
illustrate how access works and doesn’t work in rural America.

“There are farmers who have access to high-speed Internet who
are clearly at the head of the curve in terms of adopting cutting edge technology,”
Hawkins tells members of a subcommittee of the U.S. House Transportation and
Infrastructure Committee in Washington, D.C. “Then you have folks like my
grandfather growing up that still use the spiral bound shirt pocket notebook
that would do his data collection in that notebook and then crunch the numbers
on back of a Post Toasties box.”

Hawkins says too many rural residents don’t want to use the
Post Toasties box, but don’t have access to the latest technology.

Hawkins says rural America needs a reliable connection to the
Internet to meet the needs of a changing society.

“Broadband connectivity is critical in stimulating and
revitalizing the rural economy,” Hawkins testifies. “It’s essential to modern
agriculture, the farmers and ranchers who grow our food, and the quality of
life for those of us who live and work in rural America.”

Hawkins, who is from Appleton City, says he sees the need for
broadband access every day in Missouri.

“One family I know operates a soil lab with customers
worldwide. Until recently, they struggled to find an affordable, reliable
broadband service. They were paying hundreds of dollars a month for sub-par
Internet. However, with broadband investments made in Missouri, they now have
reliable service at the farm and at the lab, which has boosted their global
business.”

Hawkins calls access to high-speed Internet the “thread of
life” to rural America.

Hawkins says farmers need broadband access.

“Last month, I visited a fellow farmer in southern Missouri
who was thrilled to see a fiber optic line being installed a few miles from
this farm,” Hawkins says. “His comment to me was, maybe they’ll come my way in
a year or so.”

Hawkins says expansion of rural broadband access isn’t just an
economic issue. He says it is vital to the educational needs of rural America
as well as for the health of its residents. Hawkins says as doctors leave rural
America, residents rely more and more on telemedicine, which isn’t possible
without a reliable Internet connection.

Tomorrow kicks off the start of the weekend with the Sound of Speed Airshow at the&nbsp;Rosecrans Memorial Airport here in St. Joseph.&nbsp;

Captain Owen Compton with the Air National Guard 139th&nbsp;says&nbsp;he’s looking forward to the weekend after the last year took a toll on everyone, including the airmen.&nbsp;

“I’m looking forward to the&nbsp;opportunity&nbsp;for our wing to host the first military airshow since March 2020,” Compton tells St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;

Compton&nbsp;says the Thunderbirds are back after their last visit in 1993.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Our 1,200 airmen here at the 139th&nbsp;Airlift Wing are working really hard to&nbsp;put the finishing touches on our airshow and&nbsp;open house,” says Compton.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Compton encourages everyone to go online to get a free general admissions ticket and join in the fun this weekend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Sound of Speed Airshow starts tomorrow

St. Joseph Christian faculty helped lead a dedication ceremony on Thursday afternoon before the Lions' baseball game against Pattonsburg.

The school officially dedicated the Terry Glidewell Baseball Concession Stand at the baseball field.

Terry was the mother of St. Joseph Christian alum and star pitcher Levi Glidewell, who helped the Lions to back-to-back district titles in 2017 and '18 - the first two seasons of the St. Joe Christian baseball program.

Terry died after a lengthy fight with ovarian cancer in 2018. Afterward, her husband Jeff and school administration came together to try and decide the best way to honor her memory.

A concession stand at the baseball field was the unanimous choice.

"It was something our school needed as well," co-superintendent Danny Maggart said. "It was just a no-brainer that we were able to do this. We're just so thankful for the opportunity to remember Terry in this way."

The concession stand was delivered to the school about a year ago, but with COVID canceling last year's season, the dedication ceremony had been delayed a bit.

"It's really just a privilege to not only build this facility that was needed by the school, but also to be able to have something in Terry's memory," Jeff said. "She was just so dedicated to our son and watching different sports over the years. And she was so dedicated to the school."

Numerous parents and community members gathered at the ballpark Thursday to hear stories about Terry, as well as Levi's memorable playing career, which included a no-hit, 17-strikeout performance against East Atchison in 2019 and another 16-strikeout no-no against Braymer that same year.

"It's not important you remember me," Jeff said as he addressed the crowd at the ceremony. "It's not even important that you remember how fantastic Levi was in his three years of playing baseball. What's important is that you remember Terry's legacy."

It's a legacy and influence that Jeff saw in his son on the mound.

"He had nerves of steel," Jeff said of Levi. "And I just think of how Terry could handle any kind of situation. Chemo treatments, radiation, whatever and not complain. Levi just had that same kind of mental toughness on the mound that his mom did."

"It's not even important that you remember how fantastic Levi was in his three years of playing baseball. What's important is that you remember Terry's legacy."It's a legacy and influence that Jeff saw in his son on the mound."He had nerves of steel," Jeff said of Levi. "And I just think of how Terry could handle any kind of situation. Chemo treatments, radiation, whatever and not complain. Levi just had that same kind of mental toughness on the mound that his mom did."<figure>

St. Joseph Christian dedicates Terry Glidewell Baseball Concession Stand

After taking a year off due to COVID-19, the Apple Blossom Parade is a go in St. Joseph for 2021.

The parade is set for Saturday, May 1 and will start at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Frederick and Ashland Avenue and end in downtown near the area of 4th and Felix.

Ken Rosenauer, a longtime Apple Blossom Festival volunteer, says after the Ancient Order of Hibernians were able to have their St. Patrick's Day parade in St. Joseph last month, he knew that having the Apple Blossom parade back this year could be another step toward normalcy.

"The bottom line is we wanted to make sure we came back this year the first chance we could," Rosenauer said on KFEQ's The Hotline with Barry Birr. "Everybody, I don't care who you talk to, wants to get back to normal. Normal come the first Saturday of May is the Apple Blossom parade."

The Apple Blossom Festival won't quite be at full speed yet this year. While the parade is a go, the BBQ and pageant have both been canceled due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns. Even with those limitations, Rosenauer says parade goers will have an enjoyable time.

"There's still plenty of things for folks to do outside safely," he said. "We know we're trimmed back a bit, but we're coming back and we're hoping we come back next year as strong as ever."

The parade is free to attend, and there are around 50 float entries this year. The floats will be decorated with the theme "Telling our Stories."

The first Apple Blossom Parade and Festival in St. Joseph took place back in 1924, and has gone on continuously with the exception of the 2020 COVID shutdown.

Rosenauer says the parade and festival brings about a sense of springtime optimism and cheer, and he believes that's why the tradition has carried on for so long.

"The folks who participate in the parade and those who come out to watch the parade know there's that sense of rebirth and regrowth," Rosenauer said, "and good things coming just down the road. I think that's why we continue to do what we do."
