GRUNDY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 11:30p.m. Saturday in Grundy County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Chevy pickup driven by Desmond A. Calton, 19, Trenton, was southbound on Route A eight miles north of Trenton.

The pickup skidded and struck a deer. The driver lost control of the pickup. It traveled off the east side of the road and rolled.

Grundy County EMS transported a&nbsp; passenger Kyley R. Culbertson, 20, Trenton, to Hedrick Medical Center and she was to be transferred later to a Kansas City hospital, according to the MSHP.

Calton and Culbertson were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

HOLT COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 9a.m. Friday in Holt County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Nissan Rogue driven by Shanna M. Baumgart, 46, Belleville, IL., was northbound on Interstate 29 one mile south of Mound City.

The vehicle traveled off the west side of the road, struck the emergency crossover, became airborne, and overturned in the passing lane.

Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Baumgart and an 11-year-old passenger to Mosaic Life Care.

Baumgart was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

The Andrew County Health Department states a man in his 50s
with no underlying medical conditions has died of COVID-19. The man was
diagnosed with the coronavirus on June 9th.

Andrew County reports a total of 54 cases since counting
began; 50 confirmed and four probable. The county says 41 people who tested
positive have recovered.

Buchanan County reports 880 total cases. Doniphan County,
Kansas reports 26 cases.

Mosaic Life Care reports testing 12,060 area residents with
539 testing positive for the coronavirus. Fifteen patients are being treated at
the St. Joseph hospital for COVID-19, a few on ventilators. Mosaic is awaiting
the results from 205 tests.

Missouri health officials report 22,283 total cases statewide,
resulting in 1,022 deaths. Kansas health officials report 14,990 statewide cases
and 272 deaths.

No mask mandate for St. Joseph, yet; numbers up in Buchanan County

ATCHISON COUNTY— Three people were injured in an accident just before 4:30p.m. Thursday in Atchison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1998 Dodge 1500 driven by a 13-year-old girl from Tarkio was eastbound on County Road 170 two miles north of Tarkio.

The driver lost control of the vehicle on loose gravel. The pickup traveled off the south side of the road, struck and embankment, overturned and a passenger identified as Adrian V. Palmer, 17, Shenandoah, IA, riding in the bed of the pickup was ejected.

Lifeflight transported Palmer to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Braden A. Clark, 17, Shenandoah, IA., to Shenandoah Medical Center. A private vehicle transported to the driver to Fairfax Hospital. All three were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

CLINTON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 11a.m. Thursday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2019 GMC Canyon driven by Kevin Jordan, 62, Lenexa, was stopped at a stop sign on Interstate 35 exit 48 ramp two miles south of Cameron. The vehicle and then traveled into the intersection of U.S. 69 and into the path of and struck a northbound 1998 Ford Mustang driven by Brandy D. Skouby, 46, Cameron.

Cameron EMS transported Skouby to Liberty Hospital. Jordan was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Motorcyclist seriously injured in St. Joseph wreck

Hearings on Capitol Hill in Washington today will focus on the
effort to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, soon.

U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt chairs the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee
on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies holding
the hearings with federal health officials. Blunt says though the number of
cases is rising, that doesn’t necessarily mean deaths will spike.

“I think it’s unlikely that the death toll will have any commensurate
comparison to the death toll earlier where people that were being tested were
almost universally people that were already sick,” Blunt tells reporters on a
conference call.

Blunt says testing has greatly increased, including testing at
the workplace.

“We’ve seen that particularly in the close workplace
situations that we have in the livestock and poultry processing facilities in
our state and other places,” according to Blunt.

Locally, Mosaic Life Care had tested 11,801 area residents as
of Wednesday morning. Of those, 530 tested positive for COVID-19. Eighteen
COVID-19 patients are hospitalized at the St. Joseph hospital.

The Missouri Department of Health reports nearly 400,000
Missourians have been tested with nearly 22,000 testing positive for the
coronavirus, resulting in slightly more than 1,000 deaths.

Though COVID-19 restrictions have eased, the coronavirus
remains a threat which Blunt says must be taken seriously.

“Wearing that mask, thinking about social distancing, having
tests and therapeutics and eventually a vaccine is what moves us through this
and I hope we have the discipline as a society to do the right thing and I
believe we will.”

Federal officials scheduled to
  testify today include National Institutes of Health Director Dr. Francis
  Collins, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Robert
  Redfield, and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response
  Dr. Gary Disbrow.

Effort to find COVID-19 vaccine the focus of Congressional hearings

JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Department of Transportation will suspend road construction and routine maintenance operations starting at noon on Thursday, July 2 through 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 5 to accommodate increased traffic on the highways.&nbsp;

Lane and bridge closures already in place around the state will remain during the holiday weekend. Drivers are urged to be alert to sudden closures due to emergency situations.

With relaxed restrictions following the lifting of statewide COVID-19 health orders on June 16—and with the July 4th&nbsp;holiday coming on a Saturday—traffic is expected to be heavy on Missouri’s roads all weekend. MoDOT is reminding motorists to be attentive, courteous and responsible.

“We’re seeing a disturbing increase in aggressive driving,” said Natalie Roark, state maintenance director. “Please, for your own safety and the safety of others, slow down, don’t drive impaired or distracted and look out for each another.”

There were 15 people killed and 58 seriously injured in traffic crashes in Missouri during the 2019 Fourth of July holiday. Of the 73 people killed or injured, 18 were involved in a crash where there was at least one substance-impaired driver.

“Road conditions can change in an instant,” Roark said. “Always be alert when driving, and remember, Buckle Up Phone Down.”

A 40-year-old Princeton man died after his car ran off the
road, off a wooden bridge, and landed on its top at the bottom of a creek near
Blythedale.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Steven McReynolds died
at the scene, about a mile northeast of Blythedale.

The patrol reports McReynolds was traveling west on 162nd
Street Monday night when his car went off the north side of the road and drove
off a wooden bridge, overturning on its top, coming to rest upside down at the
bottom of the creek.

“Speed is a contributing factor in the majority of traffic crashes,” says Sgt. Jake Angle with Highway Patrol Troop H. “Slow down, plan extra time in your trip, plan ahead. If your plans are going to include alcohol, obviously we want you to have a sober designated driver or place to stay and it’s just about using good common sense - slowing down, obeying all traffic laws and having a safe weekend.”

Angle says preparation is key and it’s the small things that can make the biggest difference.

“Kick the tires, check the belts if you’re going to be traveling this holiday weekend,” Angle says. “Same thing goes with your boat, make sure everything’s in tip top shape, check the fuel system, make sure, if you’re going to be boating early morning or late in the evening, that your lighting system is good, make sure your life jackets are on board.”

During the 2019 counting period, 15 people were killed and 457 injured in Missouri over the July Fourth holiday in 1,109 traffic crashes. There were nine boating crashes, which included four injuries.

The 2020 counting period for the July Fourth holiday will be from 6 p.m., Thursday, July 2, to 11:59 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2020.

MSHP reminds travelers to slow down and plan ahead this holiday weekend

A 76-year-old Gower man died in a major crash on U.S. Route
169 between St. Joseph and Gower that backed up traffic for hours as emergency
crews responded to the three-vehicle wreck.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports Steve Petrovick died
at the scene, five miles south of St. Joseph.

The patrol states the accident occurred at 10:35 Wednesday
morning when a small SUV driven by 22-year-old Joel Queener of Kansas City,
traveling north on U.S. 169, drifted over the center line and into the path of
a car driven by 71-year-old Welma Johnson of Savannah. The SUV side-swiped the
driver’s side of Johnson’s vehicle. The impact sent the SUV into a
counter-clockwise rotation which spun it into the driver’s side of Petrovick’s
car, hitting it with its front bumper. The SUV overturned and came to rest on
its wheels on the south side of Highway 169.

Johnson suffered minor injuries, according to the patrol, and
was taken to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph.

A new center on the Missouri Western State University campus
in St. Joseph will help area residents acquire new skills while helping area
businesses find qualified workers.

The Center for Workforce Development opened today.

Executive Director Annette Weeks says Missouri Western
officials began talking about the possibility of a workforce development center
about seven weeks ago.

“And with all the COVID happenings and the unemployment rate,
we wanted to help in the way that we can,” Weeks tells host Barry Birr on the
KFEQ Hotline. “So, yes, we are launching the Center for Workforce Development
and it will provide professional and continuing education courses; short-term
courses.”

The Center offers a wide range of courses, including GED prep,
career development, computer skills, and entrepreneurship.

Though located on the St. Joseph campus, the center at present
is only offering virtual instruction.

“We have online courses, its all online right now, available,”
Weeks says. “So, this is our first phase. We will continue to build this out as
we meet the needs of the community.”

Several courses are being offered and will provide
professional certification. Some target developing the area workforce to fit
the jobs available. Others will provide continuing education, while others will
help Missouri Western students add professional training to their degrees.

business courses are offered, ranging from management to finance. Technology is
a big part of the curriculum with courses on computers, cybersecurity, and web

UPDATE: U.S. Route 169 between Route AC and Route 31 has reopened to normal traffic.

Traffic was being diverted on US Route 169 between St. Joseph
and Gower during a major crash investigation.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the three-vehicle crash
about five miles north of Interstate 29 left one person dead. The investigation
is underway and little is being released at this time. The fatal crash occurred
about 10:40 this morning.

No names are being released until next of kin are notified.

St. Joseph city officials encourage you to wear a mask when
out in public, but the city has yet to make masks mandatory.

Mayor Bill McMurray says he’s leery of taking that step,
hoping St. Joseph residents will see the wisdom of wearing masks to contain the
spread of COVID-19.

“When you go to a grocery store or when you otherwise are out
in public at another retail establishment, just wear the mask,” Murray says
during a call to the KFEQ Hotline. “It will protect others. And recent
guidelines from the CDC say it might even protect you.”

St. Joseph City Council members will meet Thursday afternoon
to discuss whether to issue an order to require residents wear masks while in
public. Kansas City and Jackson County have decided to make masks mandatory as
has the state of Kansas.

McMurray isn’t sure requiring masks is the right step.

“We really want you to wear them so that you can protect
everyone and yourself and, most of all, so we can keep these numbers down,”
Murray says. “We don’t want to become another community where we have a huge
spike in numbers and then we have to adopt draconian measures again. I don’t
want to go down that road.”

Buchanan County now reports 869 cases of COVID-19 since
counting began.

Mosaic Life Care has tested 11,801 area residents with 530
testing positive for the coronavirus. Mosaic reports 18 people are being
treated for COVID-19 at the St. Joseph hospital. Mosaic is awaiting results
from 126 tests.

Living Community of St. Joseph reports one resident and one
employee tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday. Living Community officials
now report a total of 22 residents and 13 employees have tested positive.

St. Joseph health officials do want residents to wear masks in
public as they attempt to keep COVID-19 from spreading.

St. Joseph Health Department spokeswoman Stephanie Malita says
wearing a mask during this coronavirus pandemic only makes sense.

“Wearing a mask is going to protect you to some degree and the
people around you to an even greater degree,” Malita tells St. Joseph Post. “Washing
your hands, keeping that six-foot distance; all these are things that we can do
to protect ourselves.”

Malita says she understands some residents don’t want to wear
masks at all. She says the city isn’t attempting to limit anyone’s freedom,
just limit the spread of COVID-19.

The St. Joseph Health Department will begin limited in-person services next week.

Starting July 7th, the health department will begin offering primarily immunization services with COVID-19 safety guidelines in place. 

Stephanie Malita with the Health Department says anyone with questions about guidelines and what in-person services they are offering can call their clinic first.

“It’s probably going to change again within the next few weeks. We’re going to try immunizations like this and we’ll listen to feedback from our clients and we’ll see how the flow goes. It’s going to be very different this year though,” Malita says. “Typically, people are able to wait in our waiting room, but we don’t want to put people in that position where they’re within six feet of others in an enclosed space and our lobby is not that big.”

Malita says after an initial check-in for an immunization, staff will ask for a phone number and the client will wait in their car until they receive a call that it's their turn.

Priority will be given to preschool, kindergarten, 8th and 12th grade students through August to help families meet the immunization regulations for school entry.

All scheduling will take place on-site and will be available from 8 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Malita says parents must bring their child's immunization record with them if they're not in the ShowMeVax system.

“ShowMeVax is a statewide system, it’s a confidential system, not everybody has access to it but doctor’s offices do and school nurses do so they can look up your record and make sure that your kid’s got the shots they need to have,” Malita says.

HARRISON COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 9p.m. Monday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a Dodge Dynasty driven by Steven D. McReynolds, 40, Princeton, was westbound on 162nd Street one mile northeast of Blytheville.

The car traveled off the road, off a wooden bridge and overturned in the creek bed.

McReynolds was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

St. Joseph tourism, already mired in a very tough year,
absorbed a big blow when the Kansas City Chiefs made it official that the team
wasn’t holding training camp in St. Joseph this year.

The NFL decreed all teams must hold camp at their own
facilities due to COVID-19. NFL officials turned down the Chiefs' request for a waiver so the team could continue to hold its training camp at Missouri Western State University.

Executive Director Marci Bennett with the St. Joseph
Convention and Visitors Bureau says the cancellation of training camp this year
is disappointing.

“A huge disappointment, especially coming off the year that
they had last year. I think everybody was anticipating even larger crowds this
year,” Bennett tells St. Joseph Post. “It is very disappointing, but somewhat
understandable.”

Bennett says tourism virtually vanished for two months during the
shelter-in-place coronavirus restrictions and is only now beginning to emerge. Though
Bennett says people are tentative as they begin to resume travel.

“People are nervous,” Bennett says. “They want to go somewhere
that they’re comfortable with, maybe somewhere that they’ve been before and
just didn’t have a chance to do everything and some place that’s safe and we
can be all those things.”

After all that has gone on, tourism is starting to make a
comeback, according to Bennett.

“Well, there were none and now there are some visitors,” she
says with a laugh.

Bennett says the coronavirus pandemic has greatly altered the
St. Joseph tourism advertising campaign, which now focuses on those within 200
miles of the city.

“Where they can go for a day, get out of the house, do
something fun, learn something new, and then go back to the safety of their
home.”

Bennett says the loss of the Kansas City Chiefs training camp
was a big blow, but she has high hopes the crowds will return with the Chiefs
next year when the NFL lifts its ban on away training camps. The training camp brought record crowds to Missouri Western last year.

ATCHISON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Sunday in Atchison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy pickup driven by&nbsp; Tomas E. McCrery, 25, Easton, was southbound on Interstate 29 two miles south of Rockport. The pickup rear-ended a 2014 passenger vehicle driven by Douglas F. Collins, 39, St. Joseph.&nbsp;

The collision pushed the vehicle off the road where it struck a mile marker post and the Collins was ejected.

Atchison-Holt ambulance transported Collins to Fairfax Hospital. Lifenet then transferred him to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

McCrery was not injured. The MSHP did not have seat belt usage details.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Honda Pilot driven by Devin R. McGuire, 56, Brimson, was eastbound on Main Street at Milton in Brimson.&nbsp;

The vehicle traveled off the left side of the road onto private property and struck a house. Grundy County EMS transported McGuire to Wright Memorial Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.
