The Chillicothe Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies are warning the public on the dangers of counterfeit pills after a teenager in Chillicothe died Sunday due to a counterfeit pill overdose.

Officers responded to a call in the 400 block of Cherry Street in Chillicothe late Sunday morning and found a 17-year-old girl, who was unresponsive and not breathing. The girl was dead when officers got there.

Sergeant Jeremiah Grider with the Chillicothe Police Department says there have been several counterfeit pill overdoses in the area recently - pills that are laced with fentanyl.

"This is the first person who has died as a result from it," Grider said. "But, we have seen several overdoses due to the same manufactured medication."

Police have arrested a 33-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman in connection with the death of the teenage girl Chillicothe, who police say ingested counterfeit prescription pills.

"The actual pills themselves are being made outside of our area," Grider said. "Basically, what they're doing is taking pain prescription medicine and lacing it with fentanyl."

Murder charges are being sought in the case. Both the man and woman are awaiting the filing of formal charges. They're being held at the Daviess-DeKalb County Regional Jail.

Sergeant Grider says these counterfeit pills contain dangerous amounts of controlled substances, which can lead to an overdose or death.&nbsp;

"Fentanyl is an opioid," Grider said. "A very powerful opioid. And of course, there's an opioid epidemic the U.S. is going through right now. I think this is just a new way to do it and an easy way to do it."

The Drug Enforcement Administration says fake prescription pills are easily accessible and often sold on social media and e-commerce platforms, making them available to anyone with&nbsp;a smartphone, including teens and young adults.

The number of DEA-seized counterfeit pills with fentanyl has jumped nearly 430 percent since 2019.

Grider reminds families to have these conversations with their kids, and reminds everyone to never take prescription medication unless they prescribed to you by your own doctor.

"Parents just need to talk to their children and make their children aware," he said. "With teenagers, sometimes you just need to ask those hard questions."

Disaster could strike anywhere, anytime, and the American Red Cross is encouraging everyone to stay prepared

Angie Springs spokeswoman of the Red Cross says that no matter what sort of disaster people might be facing, the steps they need to take to be prepared stay the same.

"General preparedness is the same no matter what kind of disaster that you're preparing for, so in our area here, or even if you lived on the coast and you were preparing for a hurricane, or you were in an area that's prone to wildfires, we want to make sure that every family has a disaster supplies kit in your home," Springs tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

She also adds that families should stay prepared by preparing a plan of action, as well as finding ways to stay informed.

Springs says that right now disasters are occurring in areas where people often think that could never happen to them, but Springs says that is not the case.

"You know disasters do not discriminate, it can happen to anyone at anytime, it doesn't matter where you live, how much money you make, we should all be prepared in the event that the unthinkable happens," Springs says. "And this is a simple way that we can be proactive in how we're going to be prepared in our households."

Springs says that disasters do not discriminate.

"It doesn't matter where you are at, doesn't matter where you live, disasters can happen at anytime," Springs explains. "House fires happen every single day to families that never thought it would happen to them, and so you just want to be prepared."

October is Fire Safety Awareness month, and Springs says there is one simple step everyone should follow.

"Check your smoke alarms, make sure that your batteries in your smoke alarms have been changed and that they work properly," Springs says.

Springs adds that other steps to stay prepared for a house fire, as well as any disaster, include making an emergency preparedness kit and making a plan for you and your family.

Red Cross encouraging everyone to stay prepared for disaster to strike

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after a weekend altercation in Atchison.

On Saturday, police responded to the 300 Block of Santa Fe in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

They arrested 23-year-old&nbsp;Johnny R. Christofferson of&nbsp; St. Joseph, on requested charges of disorderly conduct and attempted escape from custody. He remains in the Atchison County Jail, according to online booking records.

St. Joe man jailed for alleged attempted escape from custody

A St. Joseph man has pleaded guilty to felony charges of forcible rape and sodomy in Buchanan County Circuit Court Monday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Jerez S. Collins entered the pleas Monday before Judge Daniel Kellogg. The charges stem from offenses that occurred in June 2020 in the back-storage room of the US Oil Gas Station at 22nd &amp; Messanie.

Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney Ron Holliday said the range of punishment for both offenses includes the possibility of life sentences for both crimes.

Collins also has a prior federal bank robbery conviction stemming from a robbery at the Bank Midwest in Country Club back in November 2010. Collins received 36 months in federal prison as well as other convictions from the State of Arizona.

Sentencing is scheduled for December 2 at 11:30 a.m. Collins remains in jail and is being held without bond.

Harvest season is in full swing with more farm vehicles on the roads, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is encouraging everyone to drive safely.

Jake Angle with Troop H in St. Joseph says that it's a two way street, and that it takes both normal everyday drivers, and farmers, working alongside each other to keep Missouri roadways safe.

"You know, we've just got to work together, the farmers they need to be aware obviously that they're driving slower and that they need to have flagger vehicles, they need to have if they're driving at dusk and dawn lights, slow moving emblems, things like that to make them more visible, to make them more safe," Angle tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And then our drivers need to be aware that  when they're out here operating on these roadways, you know you could crest a hill and there's a combine, you could crest a hill there's a tractor with a disc on, or an anhydrous tank or something like that."

Angle adds that if you end up behind a slow moving farm vehicle, stay aware, because they may not be just slowing down to allow you to pass.

"You know a lot of times they'll slow to make a left turn into a field entrance some of these vehicles behind them they think oh they're just slowing down for me to pass them, they go to pass, the farm vehicle goes to make the left turn, and we have a traffic crash, you know we see that a lot," Angle says. "So, it's just about being aware and slowing down, giving them plenty of room."

Last year the patrol saw 199 crashes involving farm equipment statewide, two that resulted in fatalities.

Angle says that the patrol does see more crashes around harvest time involving farm equipment.

"We do see, obviously, an increase in collisions with farm type implements during harvest and planting, and that's pretty much just common sense, there's more farm implements out on the roadway, therefore a higher degree or a higher chance that there could be a collision," Angle explains.

But Angle adds that drivers just need to follow some simple steps to help minimize the number of crashes.

"Really it's about the drivers giving 100% of their attention to the job of driving, obeying all traffic laws, and also then the farmers doing their part as well," Angle says.

Angle says that farmers before hitting the roads to deliver their harvest should makes sure all equipment is equipped with flashing lights and a "slow moving vehicle" emblem.

A 71-year-old Chillicothe man has been arrested, accused of
exposing himself to a young girl while at a Chillicothe business.

Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox reports he and Chillicothe
Police Chief Jon Maples arrested Allen David Coates during a registered sex
offender compliance check in the 300 block of Business 36 Highway.

Chillicothe police first reported Thursday afternoon that an
elderly man was reported to have exposed himself to the girl at a business
located in the 500 block of West Business 36. Officers responded to the scene,
but the man had left. Later that afternoon, Cox and Maples located the man
fitting the description given at the scene.

Coates
is accused of exposing himself to juveniles in two different locations in
Chillicothe. Coates has been charged with three counts of Class E Felony Sexual
Misconduct involving a Child Under 15. Coates is originally from Georgia. He
has been charged with possession of child pornography in DeKalb County.

The
Livingston County Sheriff’s Office asks the public to report any similar incidents
that might have occurred.

Joseph hospital. Coronavirus cases on the Missouri Western campus have been
falling with Kennedy stating there have been no active COVID-19 cases for more
than a week.

Through the Max the Vax incentive
program, 29% of students and 85% of employees have been vaccinated,
according to Kennedy. The university continues to encourage vaccinations.
Another vaccine clinic will be held next week.

Team will continue to meet weekly to review data and adjust mitigation
strategies, including the campus face covering policy, as warranted.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a Chevy Silverado driven by&nbsp; Harrison R. Loafland, 18, DeKalb, was northbound on Highway J three miles north of DeKalb.

The pickup traveled off the east side of the road and the driver overcorrected.&nbsp; The vehicle returned to the road, began to skid, traveled off the road a second time, struck an embankment and overturned.

A private vehicle transported Loafland to Mosaic Life Care. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Freightliner semi driven by James A. Paul, 61, Indianola, IA., was northbound on Interstate 35 just south of Cameron.&nbsp;

The semi rear-ended the towed unit of a 2018 Kenworth semi driven by Kaukuton Millien, 49, Philadelphia, PA.

Cameron ambulance transported Paul to Mosaic in St. Joseph. Millien was not injured. Both driver were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Salvation Army red kettles will soon adorn the front of various locations around St. Joseph

The annual Red Kettle drive begins on November 5th and the Salvation Army in St. Joseph is seeking volunteers to be out ringing bells.

Major Ronald Key with the Salvation Army says people interested in volunteering can go online or call into the Salvation Army office, and from there says it's a pretty simple process.

"Just pick a location they'd like to ring and what time they'd like to ring, and basically I deliver any equipment they need and then pick up the equipment when they're done," Key tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So we make it pretty simple for them and we have several locations throughout the city."

Key says after being short staffed last year, and having less volunteers, he hopes that now that we know more about the COVID pandemic,  more people will go out and ring bells.

"We had people out last year, we had volunteers and we had paid people, we were shorter staffed last year because we were in the midst of the COVID and we just didn't know what to expect from that, of course we have a little more information now," Key says. "So we've already had some people that have applied to work this year, so we expect to have more people out at more locations."

Key adds  a decent chunk of the Salvation Army's funds come during the drive, and all the money raised goes to helping the community. 

"Well about one third of our budget is what we raise at Christmas, and that could go for several utility assistance, some of that funding will go to our family shelter also, for that to provide for the people at the shelter," Key says. "So we've already had some people that have applied to work this year, so we expect to have more people out at more locations."Key adds a decent chunk of the Salvation Army's funds come during the drive, and all the money raised goes to helping the community. "Well about one third of our budget is what we raise at Christmas, and that could go for several utility assistance, some of that funding will go to our family shelter also, for that to provide for the people at the shelter," Key says. ANDREW COUNTY—A Missouri man was injured in an accident just after 7p.m. Thursday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1994 GMC 1500 driven by Ryan L. Evans, 49, Savannah, was westbound on Route V one mile west of Helena.

The pickup crossed the center line, traveled off the south side of the road, overturned and struck a fence. Andrew County EMS transported to Mosaic Life Care. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

The driver stopped at the stop sign and then traveled into the path of an eastbound 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by Tom B. Tangen, 60, Polo.&nbsp; The Silverado struck the passenger side of the Camry.&nbsp;

2 hospitalized after 2-vehicle NW Missouri crash

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man in connection with an incident in Atchison.

On Wednesday, police responded to the 1500 Block of Applegate Drive in Atchison. They arrested 29-year-old James W. Duhon, Rushville Mo, on a requested charge of domestic battery, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

In 2018, Police arrested Duhon on a requested charge of aggravated assault and in 2017 on a requested charge for marijuana possession, according to online jail records. Police have arrested him ten other times, according to jail records.

Kan. man with a history of crime jailed for alleged domestic battery

The third and final candidate for the Missouri Western athletic director job met with community members at the Fulkerson Center Thursday afternoon on campus.

Joel Lueken, who's been the athletic director at Division II South Dakota School of Mines since 2014, says the Griffon A.D. job is a premiere DII job to have.

"I think Missouri Western is a flagship institution of Division II," Lueken said. "Having the ability to compete for championships is very intriguing to me. I can't see myself and my family being involved in anything other than collegiate athletics."

Lueken and his wife, Melissa, are both Iowa natives, and the chance to be closer to home is an appealing aspect of having this job.

Lueken says being a member of the prestigious MIAA conference is also part of what makes the Missouri Western job so desirable.

"They compete in what I feel is one of the best, if not the best, conference in the country in the MIAA," he said. "Facilities here are second-to-none. Being fully funded in scholarships helps out a lot. From everything I've seen and heard and witnessed so far, the people are fantastic on campus and fantastic coaches and staff."

Lueken talked a lot Thursday about marketing to the community, and having positive interactions with the campus and the city as a whole. He says there's no reason why Missouri Western should have any less than 7,500 fans at football games.

"If you're running entertaining and lively athletic events and you've got a good product on the field and on the court, people will want to come and watch," Lueken said. "They'll want to be involved. When you're there, you have to captivate the audience. You have to give them what they want. It has to be entertaining."

Lueken spent six years at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa in various capacities, including head baseball coach, admissions recruiter, assistant women’s basketball coach and other duties. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ottawa University and a master’s from Northwest Missouri State.

He points to his track record at School of Mines, an engineering and science institution in Rapid City, as a key reason to why he'd be a good fit to lead and grow Griffon athletics.

"We've increased our attendance, our engagement, our campus engagement, our student attendance," he said. "Things are trending and progressing the right way and that's what I'd like to do here."&nbsp;

Also at Mines, Lueken has increased scholarships by 62 percent and increased ticket revenue by 200 percent. In addition, scholar-athletes have maintained a 3.0 GPA or higher all six semesters and 18 in a row over the last nine years. The Missouri Western A.D. search committee will now meet with University President Elizabeth Kennedy to decide on how to move forward with the A.D. hiring process.

An exact timeline on when Josh Looney's replacement will be announced is not known. Looney left for Division I North Alabama in late August.&nbsp;

The community heard from Franklin Pierce University athletic director <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/148e9cbd-f4d7-4a78-a535-8781da20a68f">Rachel Burleson</a> Monday, and Illinois State executive associate athletic director for external affairs <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/e7118a94-67d6-4661-8cd2-35da85fd1276">Dwight Merilatt</a> on Tuesday.

South Dakota School of Mines A.D. Joel Lueken makes his case for MWSU A.D. job

Andrew County authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred in Fillmore this week, and so far, they have few details. The shooting in Fillmore happened just before noon on Tuesday.

Authorities received a call Tuesday morning from a utility worker who was inspecting a water meter shed in Fillmore, when he heard a gunshot and was grazed in the left arm.  He received only minor injuries and required no medical attention.

On his way to the water shed, the utility worker flashed his lights at another driver, who had crossed over into his lane on State Route A.  The worker never saw if that driver turned around, and he's unsure if the incident is even related.

The victim also didn't have much of a vehicle description and never saw the person who fired the shot. The investigation is ongoing.

Andrew County Sheriff's Office investigating Tuesday shooting

The annual coat drive is underway for the St. Joseph Salvation Army, as it works to hand out coats and other warm weather clothing to those in need. 

Major Ronald Key with the Salvation Army says last year was very successful in handing out not only coats, but mittens, scarves and other warmer clothing during the cold months.

"We gave out almost 400 last year, so we'll take them, you know we give them out all year long not just November and December, but even in the spring because sometimes it's so cold in the spring that people need coats, so we'll continue to give those out," Key tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And it can be more then just coats, it can also be hats, and gloves, and scarves and those kinds of things that people just need to stay warm."

Key says as long as people need warm weather clothing, they will have some available for free.

"They can just come in and what they basically do is come to our office, we give them a voucher to go over to our warehouse, and then they can pick out a coat and it doesn't cost them anything," Key says. 

The Salvation Army continues to look for more donations of hats, scarves, coats and other warm weather clothing.  Key says they will take anything that is lightly worn, clean and ready to wear.

To donate any warm weather clothing, you can bring items to the Salvation Army Warehouse at fifth and Messanie or to the Corps Community Center, both in St. Joseph, from 9am to 4pm.

"Said hey we wanna do something to help out the less fortunate, and that developed a state wide system, you know it's partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation and Feeding Missouri," Schwartz says. "And so, we've got, it's kind of a three way, certainly prong approach if you will, organizations that are the real driving force behind Share the Harvest."

Prior to the Conservation Federation of Missouri spearheading the program, it was up to the hunter to find and pay for the processor, but the federation has worked with multiple sponsors over the years.

 Schwartz says the sponsors helping work with the processors, helps allow everyone to be a part of something bigger.

"Not everybody has the opportunity to process their own deer and they want to help out, and get a part of the cause," Schwartz says. "And so it's just one of those things Conservation Federation of Missouri is really proud of going on 30 years now that we're able to help connect all those dots and help out people too."

The conservation federation took over the Share the Harvest program in 1992, marking 30 years next year. 

Over the years, hunters through the program have donated 4.4 million pounds of meat.  And now, the program is also in the second year of it's snack stick trial. 

 Schwartz says with the success of Share the Harvest, the program expanded, finding a way to help feed children with snack sticks.

 "It's protein little snack sticks, little jerky sticks, that go into the children's backpacks on weekends," Schwartz says excitedly. "It's truly another just great extension of Share the Harvest." 

The Share the Harvest snack stick bill passed through the Missouri legislature with overwhelming support and was signed by Governor Parsons last year, allowing the federation to distribute these shelf ready snack sticks.

Missouri Western State University will be reviewing its mask
mandate tomorrow, deciding whether an improvement in COVID-19 numbers is enough
to lift the mandate.

Missouri Western President Elizabeth Kennedy acknowledges the
trend is encouraging.

“Our mask mandate is only for indoor spaces, public spaces,
but it’s sure looking good and I’m sure hopeful we’ll be able to pull that
back,” Kennedy tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline.

Kennedy says she is proud of how the St. Joseph campus has
rallied to take precautions against spreading the coronavirus.

“And I’m very, very proud of our students, our faculty, our
staff, everyone who has remained diligent, who follows our protocols, and who
helps us get to this point where we can say, ‘You know what, we’re in a good
spot,’” Kennedy says.

Kennedy says the Missouri Western COVID advisory team will
meet tomorrow to decide if the positive trend in COVID-19 numbers is positive
enough to warrant lifting the requirement that masks be worn indoors.

The Buchanan County positivity rate is below five percent, new
cases have fallen as have hospitalizations. Mosaic Life Care reported treating
only 12 COVID-19 patients in its system as of Wednesday, all in St. Joseph. Kennedy
says the advisory committee will review all the latest data to decide whether
the mask mandate stays in place.

Kennedy admits she’s ready for the masks to come off.

“Trust me, I walk around with a mask around my neck in my own
work and I’ve always got one when I’m on around campus,” Kennedy says. “But I’ve
got to tell you, I’m done with it, and I’m ready to hang it up and put it away
and hopefully this will be for the late time.”

Missouri Western celebrates Homecoming this weekend with
Griffon football hosting Northeastern State at four o’clock Saturday afternoon at
Spratt Stadium. Pregame on KFEQ begins at three.

1 hospitalized after crash into median cables on I-29

PARKVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A grand jury has declined to indict a man who shot and killed two other men after a dispute involving about $200 in firewood, Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd said Wednesday.

Kalob Lawson, 34, of Kimberling City, and Jonathan Lutz, 44, of Kansas City, were shot on Feb. 10 in Parkville.

Lawson and Lutz were paid $200 to deliver a cord of firewood to a Platte County home. As they and another man were unloading the wood, the homeowner left. The men then left without delivering the full cord of wood, Zahnd said.

The homeowner’s 22-year-old son called his father and then chased Lawson and Lutz in his vehicle. Witnesses said Lawson and Lutz eventually stopped and got out of the vehicle, and Lawson was armed with a 9mm handgun, Zahnd said.

After Lawson threatened the son with the gun, the son retrieved a gun from his car and fired several times, Zahnd said. Lawson died at the scene and Lutz died later at a hospital.

The son returned home, called 911 and voluntarily surrendered.

Zahnd said Missouri's “stand your ground" law allows people to use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to protect themselves against death or serious physical injury.

The patrol says the accident occurred just after 8:30 this
morning, shutting down the interstate completely for a time, then down to
one-lane, both northbound and southbound. The patrol reports the traffic
congestion caused other, minor accidents.
