Mosaic
reports that as of Monday morning it is treating 57 COVID patients at the St.
Joseph hospital with five being treated in Maryville.

The
St. Joseph Health Department reported 269 new coronavirus cases on Thursday,
the last official report issued prior to the New Year’s Day holiday weekend.
The department also reported the death of a man in his 80s. The department
recorded 78 new cases on Tuesday, 91 on Wednesday, and 100 on Thursday.

Andrew
County reports 65 active COVID-19 cases. Doniphan County reports 50 active
cases.

Buchanan
County has recorded 18,137 total COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began,
resulting in a total of 239 deaths. Slightly more than 34,000 county residents
have had their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, 39% of the county
population.

Andrew
County has recorded 3,713 total COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 45
deaths from the virus. Doniphan County reports a total of 1,720 cases and 29
deaths.

DONIPHAN COUNTY —A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 11a.m. Saturday in Doniphan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Chevy Impala driven by Diamond Lashay Worten, 20, Hiawatha, was westbound on U.S. 36 at mile marker 370.

The car left the roadway to the north, spun backwards, struck fence posts, traveled over a cement culvert and came to rest on its wheels facing Southeast.&nbsp; &nbsp;

A private vehicle transported&nbsp;Worten to Amberwell. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The driver swerved to miss a wrong-way driver. The pickup traveled off the road, struck an embankment, returned to the road and overturned.

Missouri man injured after he swerves to miss wrong-way driver

After having no snow for Christmas, a white New Years is in the forecast this weekend. 

National Weather Service meteorologist Spencer Mell says that most of the snow will be in the northern part of Missouri, and St. Joseph is expected to get a good amount of it. 

"As you get into the St. Joe area looking at probably now six to eight inches around St. Joe, as far as the latest forecast," Mell tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "As you head down towards Kansas City there's gonna be a little more of a transition time from sleet during the early morning on Saturday to that snow later Saturday morning, so their total is a little bit lower but we're still looking at three to six inches across the Kansas City metro."

Mell says that the winter weather being forecast is expected to begin just around the start of the new year, after midnight on New Years Eve. 

"We're expecting the precipitation to move in after midnight on New Years Eve, so if anybody is going to be out there, make sure that they're paying attention to the weather and making sure they're getting to someplace safe before it does hit," Mell says. "Obviously conditions will become slick pretty quickly as temperatures are supposed to quickly drop on New Years Eve to well below freezing."

Temperatures are expected to be very cold, dropping into the teens.

Temperatures expected to be bitterly cold, snow coming for start of new year

The new year begins this weekend, and that means several New Years parties will be happening around St. Joseph. 

Sargent Jake Angle with Troop H in St. Joseph says the Highway Patrol understands that people will be out celebrating with friends and families this year, and is urging people to make a plan if they know alcohol will be involved at these parties.

"Sometimes those celebrations include maybe alcohol, and we just want to encourage people, have a plan ahead of time, don't wait until maybe you've gone somewhere and you've had a couple drinks and you try to make that decision on how you're going to get home or what you're going to do," Angle tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "Don't wait until that moment when maybe your judgment is impaired, plan ahead of time, have that sober designated driver, have that place to stay that's critically important."

Angle says if you are out driving this holiday and you see something that the highway patrol should be aware of, all you need to do is dial three digits into your phone.

"If you're out there and you see something, whether it's you believe someone is driving impaired, someone's operating their vehicle in a careless manner or something like that, *55 will get you to the closest troop headquarters if you feel something you witness out there like a crash," Angle says. "Or if they're driving so bad obviously 911." 

On top of impaired drivers, the highway patrol is encouraging drivers to slow down with winter weather expected this weekend. 

Angle says that as the snow falls and the roads become icy, before you head out to travel, you should ask yourself a few simple questions.

"Why am I out here driving on the roadways in these conditions, is this trip absolutely necessary, do I really need to be out here?" Angle says. "And I think a lot of the times, we don't want to answer that question, because we really want to go do something, but if we're really honest with ourselves, the answer is no, it's not worth the risk, it's not worth damaging property, potentially injuring yourself or someone else, or even being involved in a fatality crash."

Forecasters say upwards of six to eight inches of snow are expected to fall in St. Joseph over the weekend.

ANDREW COUNTY — Two teens were injured in an accident just after 10p.m. Thursday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Dodge Challenger driven by a 16-year-old St. Joseph boy was northbound on U.S. 71 three miles north of Savannah.

The car traveled off the road down an embankment, rolled and came to rest in the median.

Andrew County EMS transported the driver and a 17-year-old male passenger from Rea to Mosaic Life Care. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

NODAWAY COUNTY—Five people were injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Thursday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Ford Explorer driven by Charles W. Henry, 36, Ravenwood, was eastbound on U.S. 136 at Pleasant View Drive just east of Maryville.

The Ford rear-ended a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek driven by Connor J. Nielson, 20, Maryville, who had slowed to turn left onto Pleasant View Drive.&nbsp; 

After impact, the Ford became attached to the Subaru. Both vehicles crossed the center of the road. The Subaru struck the rear driver side tire of a westbound 2004 Ford F150 driven by Grant M. Hagaman, 41, Maryville.

Nodaway County ambulance transported Nielson, Henry, and three passengers in the Subaru including Randi K. Nielson, 44, Maryville, and two juveniles to Mosaic in Maryville. Hagaman was not injured. Henry was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

A private vehicle transported Ford and a passenger Samantha L. Ownby, 19, Savannah. The MSHP did not report where they were transported. They were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

He has been on the air in St. Joseph for the past
44-and-a-half years.

Today, Brent Harmon, better known as Brother B or Brother
Brent, retires, ending a career that began on KFEQ and ends on Q-Country.

And, yes, he does remember that first day on the air on
KFEQ:&nbsp; July 6th of 1977.

“I do only because I was taking over for Bill Price, the Roadmaster,
the all-night truckers show – he used to talk to truck drivers on CB back in
the late 70s – and I remember being overwhelmed with people saying, ‘Where’s Bill,
where’s Bill, where’s Bill?” Harmon says with a laugh.

Harmon, a native of Independence, began his broadcasting
career in Falls City, Nebraska at KTNC after graduating with a broadcast degree
from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.

He says the call by KFEQ was a good break for him.

“Oh, I thought, big time radio,” Harmon says, “From Falls City to St. Joe, I was thrilled to death.”

Those first days working the overnight shift on KFEQ gave
Harmon invaluable experience.

“I got a real feel for what I had to do, how I had to
communicate with people,” Harmon says. “Back then, we were cueing up black
vinyl 45 (rpm) records. So, I got a real feel for how to be a disc jockey.”

Harmon came to KFEQ when it was a stand-alone AM. Q-Country
92.7 FM would come later and, at first, would be programmed by satellite.

Harmon counts as mentors former KFEQ Program Director Bob Orf
who first hired him at KFEQ, Kevin Wagner with Eagle Communications who
welcomed him to Q-Country, and current Eagle Communications Program Director
Travis Dodge.

He says much has changed over the years, including where
people can find entertainment, now expanding technologically to the Internet,
podcasts, and the like. Harmon says radio has changed drastically as well due to
technology, from vinyl records to tapes to cart machines to discs to digital.

“All of that has changed and it’s been great, but the basic
mission has not,” Harmon says. “We’re still here to help people if we need to
or converse with people or entertain them or play new music for them or
whatever. So, it’s been very strange to see all the technology advance, but the
basic mission is always the same.”

The biggest change is ahead:&nbsp;
retirement.

Harmon admits the last couple of months have proven difficult.

“Well, I go back and forth, because this is something that I’ve
wanted to do for a long time and, I’m not getting any younger, so I go back and
forth between being really excited (about retirement) and then thinking, wow, something is coming
to an end.”

“Well, I just hope somebody that you could count on, somebody
that was fairly consistent in their presentation or just the overall feeling of
relating to people,” Harmon says, adding he hopes he comes across as someone you would want to have a beer with.

And, Brother B leaves with a message for his listeners.

“It’s been a tremendous honor to be here, to be on the radio for
so long in St. Joe and I will miss you, but I think we’ve had something pretty
good.”

Brother B retires after 44+ years on the air in St. Joseph

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. (AP) — A plumbing worker has died after a trench collapsed in western Missouri.

<a href="https://www.kmbc.com/article/1-killed-when-trench-collapses-in-grain-valley-missouri/38636397">KMBC-TV&nbsp;</a>reports that the accident happened Wednesday in Grain Valley, just east of Kansas City. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said crews with Preferred Plumbing Inc. of Kingsville were installing plumbing lines for homes under construction when the 10-foot-deep trench gave way.

The victim's name wasn't immediately released.

Plumbing worker dies in trench collapse in Grain Valley

The end of the year draws near and there is still time to make those last minute charitable donations.

IRS spokesman Michael Devine says now is the time to make those donations to eligible charities to help get a little bit of a break on this year's taxes.

"The key is, this is a chance if you haven't been making donations to your favorite charity, that you can do one before the end of the year, and then when you file your tax return be able to get a deduction for that money that you were so generous to share," Devine tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. 

Devine says only donations made by check, credit card or debit card are what is eligible, and adds that those that are single could earn up to $300 and $600 if you're married.

Devine says there are other things you can do as well to earn some tax breaks, including itemizing some of those things that you can deduct from this years taxes.

"So if you've got, you know, a lot of property taxes, or you've got a lot of medical bills, things that you could deduct that can get you over that threshold to itemize, then now would be a good time to do that before the end of the year," Devine says. "Most people don't, most people use the standard deduction, and that's why the charitable donation before the end of the year can get you a special deduction."

Devine does remind everyone though to get those things done before the end of the year, because anything done on January 1st will go towards next years taxes. 

Devine says that a great tool to help you determine the priority of how to itemize those things, is those tax experts in your area 

"Give them a call and say here's my circumstance, you did my taxes last year so you know what my situation is, it didn't change much, is there anything that I should do that will have an effect on my taxes for 2021 that I can still do?" Devine explains.

Devine says only donations made by check, credit card or debit card are what is eligible, and adds that those that are single could earn up to $300 and $600 if you're married.Devine says there are other things you can do as well to earn some tax breaks, including itemizing some of those things that you can deduct from this years taxes."So if you've got, you know, a lot of property taxes, or you've got a lot of medical bills, things that you could deduct that can get you over that threshold to itemize, then now would be a good time to do that before the end of the year," Devine says. Still time to consider last-minute charitable donations; plan taxes for next year

Missouri State Sen. Dan Hegeman of Cosby says while
legislative leaders expect the state budget to grow by two percent in the next
fiscal year, that growth isn’t as important as the balances in the current
budget.

Hegeman, the Senate Appropriations Committee chair, has agreed
with Gov. Mike Parson and the House Budget Committee chair, Rep. Cody Smith of
Carthage, on a consensus revenue estimate that projects a 2.1% growth in state
revenue.

“But this year with so great balances in many of these funds,
I see that as less of a tool to help guide us this year than the actual fund
balances themselves that we’ll be working with,” Hegeman tells KFEQ/St. Joseph
Post.

Hegeman credits the governor for guiding the state through the
difficulties of the coronavirus pandemic.

“In that process, we’ve been able to actually gain in our General
Revenue receipts, rather than decline.”

Hegeman is more pleased that the state General Revenue budget
has a current balance of approximately $2 billion than in the projected growth in
tax revenue next year. 

“We’ve been looking at about a $2 billion fund balance in the
General Revenue. It kind of bounces around,” Hegeman says, adding tax revenue
has come in about 20% higher than anticipated.

Hegeman says the legislature must spend the extra money
wisely. The legislature also must consider how best to use the $2.8 billion
allocated Missouri from the American Rescue Plan, approved by Congress as part
of national coronavirus relief and recovery.

Hegeman says Gov. Parson has already suggested spending $400
million to expand broadband in hard-to-reach parts of Missouri. Other
infrastructure needs qualify as well, according to Hegeman.

“We can use it for water programs and water projects,
infrastructure,” Hegeman says. “We can use it for wastewater infrastructure and
then we can use it to replace state revenues that were lost due to the COVID situation.
Conservative figuring, I think we figure that to be around $800 to 900 million.”

Fund balances more important than revenue growth to Senate budget chair

The northwest Missouri Area Health Education Center is celebrating 25 years of providing education to health care providers.

Director Becky Kendrick says there are different Health Education Centers all around the nation.

"Our northwest Missouri AHEC has been around since 1996, and really our whole mission is around increasing the number of health care providers serving in rural and underserved areas," Kendrick tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Kendrick says many of the nations Area Health Education Centers are funded through grants.  The northwest Missouri one is also sponsored and funded by Mosaic Life Care.

AHEC provides education to desiring health care providers, educating students on several different medical fields. 

Kendrick says that the center strives to increase the number of healthcare providers, and it starts for students as early as high school.

"We start out with high school students, we offer programs to introduce them to health care careers," Kendrick says. "You know, a lot of times when students think about working in health care they just think of doctors and nurses, and really our mission is to expose them to all of the health care careers that there are, because there are so many."

Kendrick says the center specializes in many different forms of health care education, but there are still some big needs in northwest Missouri, especially in the midst of a global pandemic. 

"Some of the primary needs are nursing, it's just always going to be, especially given the current environment with the pandemic, we absolutely need nurses," Kendrick explains. "We need primary care doctors, especially to serve in our rural communities, and then respiratory therapy is a great need."

Kendrick says with respiratory therapy being such a big need, AHEC is excited to see Missouri Western State University opening up a respiratory therapy program to help feel that need in the area.

Northwest Missouri Area Health Education Center celebrates 25 years of service

With the Christmas holiday officially behind us, many people will be disposing of their natural Christmas trees over the next few days.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says there a number of things you can do with your old tree rather than just having it sit in your backyard or on the curb.

MDC Spokesperson Lucas Bond says getting rid of the tree can be kind of a sad reminder that the holiday season is ending.

"But, hey, why not be happy about it?" Bond said. "You can recycle your Christmas tree, give back to nature and just go outside and enjoy the outdoors while doing so."

Trees can be weighted and sunk in ponds and lakes as fish habitat. Or, they can be placed in yards to shelter certain wildlife like rabbits. Trees can also be used for kindling to start fires. Some woodworkers save the trunks of Christmas trees to build outdoor benches and chairs.

The city of St. Joseph will provide a disposal site for trees at the Drake Softball Complex located at 22nd Street and Southwest Parkway.

Residents can dispose of their trees through January 17. The trees will be removed and eventually mulched. Those who drop their tress off here are asked to be sure that all ornaments, tinsel and tree stands have been removed.

While artificial trees have become a popular, if not convenient choice for many people around Christmas, MDC spokesperson Bill Graham says there are benefits to having a real tree.

"Just want to let people know there are other things you can do with your trees besides putting them in the dump or something," he said.

City of St. Joseph, MDC provide options on what to do with natural Christmas trees

ANDREW COUNTY—A Missouri man was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Dodge Caravan driven by Edwin D. Zion, 74, Bolcow, was southbound on Route C two miles southwest of Rosendale.

The van traveled across the center of the road, traveled off the east side of the road, struck a culvert, went airborne and rolled.

Andrew County EMS transported Zion to Mosaic Life Care. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Buchanan County doesn’t have any regulations on the creation
of solar farms.

Presiding County Commissioner Lee Sawyer says some land owners
have informed the commission they have been approached by companies considering
erecting solar panels on 10-to-15 acres for commercial sales.

Sawyer says solar will have to be part of the approach as the
state shifts to using more alternative energy.

“The state of Missouri voted kind of overwhelmingly that they
wanted to move toward more renewable energy,” Sawyer tells host Barry Birr on
the KFEQ Hotline. “We always take that seriously and want to see if we can at
least be thoughtful and pro-active in an approach.”

Missouri voters in 2008 approved the Missouri Clean Energy Act
requiring utilities to generate at least 15% of their energy from renewable
sources, including solar, wind, biomass, and hydropower.

Sawyer says Buchanan County will work to create regulations
for solar power similar to the effort taken to regulate wind energy.

Sawyer doesn’t believe it will take long for the commission to
tackle the issue.

“I would say that we could get some pretty good feedback and
information during the first quarter of this coming year,” Sawyer says. “And then
shortly thereafter kind of come up with what would be a good approach and maybe
at that point in time we have some public hearings if there’s interest in those
kinds of things just to make sure that people have input.”

Sawyer says these solar panel installations would be much more
than the single solar panel you see occasionally on the roof of a business or home.

“I would say there’s more that we don’t understand right now
than what we do to be honest,” Sawyer says “but we’ll get it figured out and we’ll
get some good advice and look at best practices to figure that out.” 

Sawyer says the process will likely follow the process the
commission used in devising regulations for wind mills.

The pickup veered from the passing into the driving lane and struck a 2005 International MODOT truck driven by Jeffery C. Laslie, 56,&nbsp; Plattsburg, that was parked with lights and arrow lights activated for pot hole repair.&nbsp;

Cameron ambulance transported Jobe to Liberty Hospital. Laslie was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Driver hospitalized after pickup strikes MODOT truck

The national blood supply is continuing to decline local Red Cross officials say, and that could cause bigger problems.

Red Cross spokesperson Joe Zydlo says that the concern level of Red Cross officials is continuing to rise as the blood supply dips, and with that supply declining, that could make for some bigger issues.

"There's rising concern, it's sort of still the same, that's really the issue that we have, we have holiday celebrations that are continuing, and this is going back to Thanksgiving and now into December, " Zydlo tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And really, it's the blood level nationally continues to dip and it could force hospitals to hold off on essential blood transfusions for patients."

Zydlo says that means that anyone that needs a surgery like that, with no blood that surgery won't happen until hospitals get that blood.

Zydlo adds this decline is coming at a time the Red Cross normally sees some drop in blood donors with schools being out, more holiday get-togethers and winter weather.

Zydlo says that traditionally around the Christmas and New Year’s holiday Red Cross officials see a dip in donations, meaning that there is always one big need this time of year

"The main need is donors, of all blood types, really that's really the major key and that's really what we need to see," Zydlo says. "I think the demand is far outweighing the supply right now, and that demand has kicked up, over the last two months we've seen an increase of need for more blood products by 10-12%."

Zydlo says that typically nationwide the Red Cross needs about 13-thousand donations every day, but over the last two months it has needed an additional 10-thousand each week, due to the demand.

Zydlo adds in a blood shortage like this all blood types are needed, Type O negative being one of the most important, being the universal blood type that can be transfused to anyone.

Zydlo says that one of the biggest drops has been the number of new donors, adding at this time last year new donations surged as the Red Cross tested for COVID-19 antibodies.

But Zydlo says that this year new donors dipped nationwide by 34-35%, and in the bi-state area he covers of Missouri and Arkansas dipping 13%, and he says that's one of the factors in a perfect storm during the blood supply decline.

"It's a perfect storm, it's really a combination of a lot of factors, first time donor dip, that's certainly something there, the increase in needs for blood products due to the elective surgeries and more trauma situations, you know with more people being out and about on the roads, and I think that has a lot to do with it" Zydlo explains. "I think those are all factors, again, it's just the perfect storm

Zydlo says another factor in that storm is the time of year it is, with donations already dipping down around the holidays, especially with schools being out as 18-20% of Red Cross blood drives are at schools.

St. Joseph homeowner while allegedly attempting to break-in to his detached
garage late Christmas evening.

St. Joseph police say the alleged burglar was rushed to the

Police will say the homeowner on Lakeview Avenue reported
a person attempted to break in to the garage late Christmas evening and he
confronted him.

Outgoing St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce President Patt Lilly
says chambers have broadened their outlook over the years, viewing their role
as building better communities, not just helping to create jobs.

says chambers have broadened their outlook over the years, viewing their role
as building better communities, not just helping to create jobs.Lilly says a chamber of commerce used to concentrate solely on
economic development, but now must consider community development as part of
its role. Lilly says chambers concentrating solely on job creation, leaving
community development up to others, simply doesn’t work anymore.“From a leadership standpoint, from a business leadership
standpoint, we have to get engaged and involved in working with the community
as a whole and providing business leadership to move issues forward that benefit
not only the community, but businesses in the community,” Lilly says.Lilly says that 20 years ago the St. Joseph chamber began
working with Mosaic Life Care, Heartland at the time, on community engagement
and community planning. The outgrowth was the <a href="https://saintjoseph.com/advocacy/community-alliance-of-saint-joseph/">Community Alliance of St. Joseph</a> and the
Imagine St. Joseph 2040 plan. “The truth is, is that as you look at issues, as you look at
concerns, as you look at challengers for the future, at the end of the day it’s
about looking at ourselves as a community and saying we need to be better than
we are,” according to Lilly.Lilly says the broadening of the chamber’s role came about due
to the input of its members.“The business community came forward through the chamber and
said the most important issue to us is supporting our school district,” Lilly
says. “We have to find a way for this community to support our school district,
because we have to be better: &nbsp;our
educational attainment, the quality of education, the leadership has to be
better.”
