HOLT COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Monday in Holt County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Honda passenger vehicle driven by Timmothy M. Henzel, 34, Bellvue, NE., was eastbound on Interstate 29 eight miles south of Oregon.

The car attempted to pass a 2007 GMC Sierra drive by Tyson L. Gibbons, 46, Tarkio,&nbsp; and then rear-ended a 2011 International MODOT snow plow. 

After the collision, the Honda skid into the driving lane. The GMC pickup struck the Honda.

Atchison-Holt EMS transported Henzel to Mosaic Life Care. There were no other injuries reported. All three drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Driver hospitalized after vehicle rear-ends snow plow truck

BUCHANAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 11a.m. Monday in Buchanan COunty.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1999 Ford Escort driven by Dezstaney C. Felder, 26, St. Joseph, was eastbound on the exit ramp from northbound Interstate 29 to eastbound U.S. 36.

The car began to slide, traveled off the road and struck a sign.

A private vehicle transported Felder to Mosaic Life Care. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Evergy is asking customers to conserve electricity as much as possible through Wednesday due to the extreme cold. They've also begun controlled outages as a way to conserve energy.

The region's coldest weather in decades is creating a high demand for electricity.&nbsp; It's also driving high demand for natural gas, straining the gas supply available to generate electricity.

Icy conditions have also made availability of wind power uncertain.

Evergy is also conducting rolling blackouts, starting Monday to conserve energy. These blackouts can last between 30-60 minutes. Already more than 30,000 customers have lost power for a half hour this afternoon, according to a Tweet from Evergy.

Evergy's website is also experiencing technical issues due to a high volume of traffic.

Evergy is encouraging customers to turn their thermostats a little cooler, between 65-68 degrees. They also ask that you avoid using space heaters.

You should also close blinds and shades to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows.

MWSU to remain closed through tomorrow due to bitter cold

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett says the recent human
trafficking bust in St. Joseph is an example of how law enforcement agencies
working together can make a real difference.

Puett says the joint effort worked smoothly during the bust.

“We had judges ready to review search warrants. We had members
of the sheriff’s office, obviously the (St. Joseph) police department, the highway
patrol, Kansas City Police Department, Springfield Police Department, victim
advocate groups, there was somebody from Probation and Parole there. It was a
huge effort,” Puett says of the February 5th operation.

The Missouri Attorney General’s Anti-Human Trafficking Task
Force supervised the operation.

The crackdown focused on two St. Joseph truck stops:&nbsp; Bucky’s Express and Love’s Travel Stop.

Law enforcement officers arrested three people with other
arrests pending.

Puett says human trafficking busts also seek to help victims.

“And they brought a medical team in from Joplin and some
officers from Springfield to work on these girls that are being trafficked into
our community and try to get them some help,” Puett says.

Law enforcement rescued eight victims, two of whom were
children, one an infant. The victims have been provided food, lodging, medical
treatment, counseling, and drug rehabilitation.

Human trafficking crackdown an example of law enforcement cooperation

River Bluff Brewing is still relatively new to St. Joseph.

"Just over two years ago," co-founder and vice president Edison Derr said, when asked about the brewery's opening.

It didn't take long for the locally owned brewery on Frederick Avenue to become a popular spot. The Chiefs making the Super Bowl in 2020 certainly helped business.

"The Super Bowl last year for us here was a good time," Derr said. "We gave away a jersey...it was a good time."

Then, March came. We all know what happened next. Theatres, hair salons, entertainment venues, bars, restaurants and non-essential businesses had to shutter their doors in the wake of COVID-19.

River Bluff was closed for more than six weeks. And like so many others, their staff did what they could to stay afloat. In the case of River Bluff, this meant filling and hauling growlers out to the parking lot, trying to fill an avalanche of to-go orders.

"We were pretty busy," Derr recalled. "There was three of us, running all around the parking lot trying to take orders. And even though the service wasn't as good as we wanted it to be," he chuckled, "thankfully, everyone appreciated it. And we really appreciated them.

"There were some exhausting nights for sure from us running around. We're cramping, stretching each other's calves out and stuff, just trying to get beer to people."

River Bluff eventually switched to cans for their to-go orders, which helped reduce the stress. And the cramps.

The to-go orders helped, but the pandemic took its toll.

"We stayed...pretty good," Derr said. "Even, I would say, you know? If that. But, our employees, they never...they didn't lose a beat, really."

Everyone kept their jobs, but money was tight. Derr and co-founder Chris Lanman wanted to find a way to keep their business growing, and to keep their employees on the books.

In late summer, they started exploring the idea of a new, second location in Kansas City.

"We just did a lot of brain storming," Derr said. "One of the options was, if we could find a spot that was affordable. You know, if we're going to be stuck forever at 50 percent or less (capacity), maybe opening another place up, if the numbers were right, and using about the same number of workers would be the best way to move forward."

The search for the second location really didn't take all that long.

"The first place we looked at, we loved," Derr said. "We kept looking and every place we looked at, we kept comparing to the first place, so we ended up with the first place."

That first place was the Historic Kansas City Water Department Building at 201 South Main Street in the River Market - a brick structure that first opened in 1904 and was then placed on the National Registrar or Historic Places 90 years later.

Located just south of the Missouri River, and a stone's throw north of the Power and Light District, Derr is confident the experience will be almost identical to the one patrons get in St. Joseph.

"We're hoping to keep the atmosphere very similar," he said. "We hope that we have as much luck with hiring some of the greatest people in the world to help us out."

The new location will bring a mixture of new beer, and also some of the more popular choices in St. Joe.

"We're going to have some of the similar beers," Derr said. "Our staples up here that sell really well and people get mad when we pull off, so we'll take those down there as well."

The exact first day isn't known yet, but management is optimistic for a late spring or early summer opening.

River Bluff is also subleasing a kitchen at the new location, so they will have food options in Kansas City - something not on the menu in St. Joseph.

In the wake of a rough year, and with a mix of old and new in the heart of Kansas City, Derr is hopeful that a second River Bluff brewery will be a sign of better times ahead - both for his business and everybody else.

"We're working hard," Derr said. "Our staff up here is working hard, and we can't wait to see everyone after vaccines and after we get the okay from the CDC and the government and everything to get back to life.

"Let's do it, let's have a good time, man. Life's no fun if you're not able to smile and have a beer, you know?"

After staying afloat through pandemic, River Bluff preparing to open new KC location

Bitter
cold weather didn’t stop the Cotillion for Achievement Ball this past weekend.

Top
female honors went to Alyssa Goolsby of Central High School with Ethan
Brushwood of East Buchanan High School winning top male honors. Both Award of
Distinction winners received an $1,800 scholarship.

The
14 finalists will receive $900 scholarships.

The
Cotillion for Achievement Ball was held Saturday at the St. Joseph Country Club.

All
of the finalists were seniors attending high school in Andrew or Buchanan
County.

finalists: Lilyann Gardner, Bishop LeBlond; Ashyn Griffin, DeKalb; Emma Kapp,

hazardous weather outlook has been issued by the National Weather Service which
warns about dangerously low wind chills.

The
Missouri Department of Transportation has issued a warning to limit travel today
and tonight due to the bitter cold.

The
weather service says dangerously cold conditions will continue throughout today
into this evening when the actual temperature could drop to around -15.
Minimum wind chills this morning will range from -25 to -35.

A chance
of snow remains in the forecast.

The
Missouri Department of Transportation issued a statewide warning on Saturday,
urging drivers to get to wherever they need to be and avoid traveling during
the coming waves of snowfall Sunday and Monday and the extremely low
temperatures.

MoDOT asks drivers who must travel in these conditions should plan
ahead and allow extra time to take it slow. MoDOT also advises to make sure
you have a full tank of gas, extra blankets and gloves, and provisions like
water and snacks in the event of an emergency.

Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph and Northwest Missouri State
University in Maryville have cancelled on-campus classes for Monday, due to the
expected bitter winter weather.MWSU
says online classes should be held as scheduled. In-person classes may be conducted in a virtual environment at the
instructor's discretion.The Maryville campus of NWMSU is
closed today and tomorrow with the Northwest-Kansas City campus in Gladstone closed
tomorrow. Only the dorms and dining halls will be open on the Maryville campus.The St. Joseph Public School
District is off Monday for President’s Day.

MWSU and NWMSU cancel classes due to bitter cold

A winter weather advisory has been issued by the National
Weather Service with the Missouri Department of Transportation issuing a
warning about travel conditions both on Sunday and Monday.

The National Weather Service forecast dangerously cold
temperatures and wind chill peaking this weekend into early next week. Some
snow accumulation is expected in the greater St. Joseph region. 

Forecasters have placed a wind chill warning into effect until
six o’clock Monday evening for a wide swath of northeast Kansas and northwest
Missouri, including southeast Nebraska and southern Iowa. Wind chills in the
area could dip as low as 30 below zero. Snow accumulations are expected between
the one-to-three-inch range.

NWS cautions against outdoor activities during this period. If
venturing outside, NWS recommends appropriate clothing, including a hat and
gloves.

The area forecast for today is for a chance of snow, cloudy,
and cold with a high near -1; wind chills will drop to -17 and -22 with winds
out of the north at 10 to 14 miles per hour. Tonight, there remains a chance of
snow early, then mostly cloudy with a low of -9 and wind chills of -21 to -26.

Monday, President’s Day, is expected to be worse with a high
of around 2 with wind chills between -16 and -16 and a low in the evening of
-15.

A slight warm up is expected to being Tuesday when the high is
forecast to reach 10 above. The high Friday is expected to reach 30 with above freezing
temperatures forecast for next weekend.

The Missouri Department of Transportation issued a statewide
warning on Saturday, urging drivers to get to wherever they need to be and
avoid traveling during the coming waves of snowfall Sunday and Monday. The
warning is aimed especially at central and southern Missouri, which is expected
to get the most snow. NWS forecast 2-6 inches of snow along and south of I-70,
starting this morning. Some areas of the state are expected to see a lull in
snow this afternoon with a second wave beginning this evening.

MoDOT says drivers
who must travel in these conditions should plan ahead and allow extra time to
take it slow, and remember to also:

Winter weather warning issued; travel discouraged

BUCHANAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 12:30a.m. Saturday in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Saturn Ion driven by a 16-year-old girl from St. Joseph was southbound on the exit ramp from U.S. 169 Interstate to Interstate 29.&nbsp;

The driver lost control of the vehicle on the snow covered road and rear-ended the towed unit of a 2019 Freightliner semi driven by Paul R. Curtis, 61, LaVista, Nebraska.

Buchanan County EMS transported the teen to Mosaic Life Care. Curtis was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the. MSHP.

St. Joseph man hospitalized after crash into abandoned car

For the fourth day in a row, St. Joseph health officials report less than 10 new COVID-19 cases in Buchanan County.

The health department reports nine new cases of coronavirus in Buchanan County Friday, and no new fatalities.

Buchanan County has seen a total of 9,912 cases and 157 deaths related to COVID. There have been 8,475 doses of the vaccine administered in Buchanan County to date.

Mosaic Life Care is currently treating 18 COVID-19 patients in its St. Joseph hospital.

Andrew County has reported an error in their online COVID-19 dashboard, but they reported 1,955 total cases and 20 fatalities as of Thursday.

Holt County reports 17 new cases (505 total) since Thursday. Clinton County reports a total of 1,915 cases and 64 fatalities.

Statewide, Missouri reports 874 new cases (470,107 total) and 11 new deaths (7,442 total) Friday.

Since Wednesday, Kansas has reported an additional 1,208 cases (286,102 total) and 61 fatalities (4,364 total). Nearly 8,900 Kansans are hospitalized with COVID complications.

Doniphan County, Kansas reports 923 total cases, Atchison County, KS reports 1,488 and Brown County reports 1,189 total cases of COVID-19.

COVID-19 update - Buchanan County numbers remain stable

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett suggests residents look
after each other during this bitterly cold stretch and take time to prepare
before traveling during extreme winter weather.

Puett recommends taking some time to check in on neighbors and
family members. He says he understands that our lives are busy and we get
focused on our work or just day-to-day activities.

Still, take the effort to check on others, especially during
this time of COVID-19 which has restricted our access to each other.

“Make sure you’re checking on people, especially vulnerable
people,” Puett says.

Puett says elderly residents, especially those who live alone,
can suffer during a harsh winter spell; both from the cold and from loneliness.

Be careful if traveling during these bitterly cold days and
nights.

The National Weather Service has a slight chance of snow in
the forecast throughout the weekend, but it is the predicted highs that
standout. The NWS expects the high today to reach only 7 with wind chills of
between -8 and -13. The low tonight will dip down to below zero at -1. The high
Saturday is expected only to reach 6 with the low dropping down to -4. On
Sunday, the high is expected to be around 2.

Puett says if you plan to travel in the next few days, take
time to prepare before heading out. Puett suggests you stock your vehicles with
supplies and not just extra blankets, coats, gloves, and hats.

“A flashlight, some way to stay warm, some non-perishable food
items, protein bars or granola bars or whatever your preference is, but we all
know how weather is around here, how quick it can change, and how a sheet of
ice can come down pretty quickly,” Puett says.

Puett says it’s also a good idea to pack a few bottles of
water before making a trip during winter. A cell phone charger also could prove
helpful. He says such preparation can help you survive if your vehicle slides
off the road and into a ditch.

Check on neighbors, prepare before you drive during this extreme cold

With bitter cold temperatures forecast all weekend, it's important to bring your pets indoors.

Humane Educator Aubrey Silvey for St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue says it's important to bring animals inside during these frigid temperatures.

"We really recommend that if you're able to bring your pet inside even if it's in the basement or even if you have to crate your dog when you bring it inside," Silvey tells St. Joseph Post. "If you could just do that through these really frigid temperatures, that's the best thing you can do." 

Silvey says if you can't bring your pets indoors, make sure you provide adequate shelter for them outside. 

"For dog houses, you want to make sure that the floor of the doghouse is off of the ground because the ground can take the heat away from the dog house," says Silvey. "You want the door of the doghouse to be facing away from the wind and a flap on that dog house is preferable."

Silvey says if you have an animal living outdoors through the winter months, it's important to remember they are going to need a high quality diet. 

"Keeping their bodies warm depletes their energy so they do require more food to stay healthy weight and to be able to keep warm," says Silvey. 

If you see an animal in city limits outside for a long time, contact animal control.

"Those at most risk are people who work outside, people in poor physical condition, elderly, infants, people with chronic health conditions," King tells St. Joseph Post.

King says to wear layers when outdoors in these below freezing temperatures.

"If you have to be outdoors try to do the most activity during the warmest part of the day which is usually 10 a.m. to 3 p.m," says King. "Make sure you're wearing a hat, good coat, warm gloves, waterproof boots with socks, and make sure you have appropriate clothing on."

The National Weather Service predicts the temperatures for tonight to be as low as -2 degrees with a wind chill value between -10 and -15. Saturday night will have a low of around -5 degrees. Sunday will be mostly cloudy all day with a high near 1 degree. Sunday night will have a low of around -11 degrees and a chance of precipitation. Monday we are looking at a high of 2 degrees with a chance of precipitation. Monday night will be low around -11 degrees. 

King says having someone to work with you outside is always a good idea. 

"Using a buddy system is good. If you work outside, have a buddy that you're working with that can kind of touch base and make sure that you are not exhibiting any signs of hypothermia," says King. 

King says to avoid drinking alcohol and caffeine if you're going to be outside in the bitter cold.

"Increase your fluid intake by drinking juice, water, sports drink, warm fluids, but avoid alcohol and caffeine. That can affect the way your body handles cold." 

King says elderly and adults in poor health conditions should stay out of the below freezing temperatures. 

"Try to stay indoors and in a warm area," says King. "If you need help or assistance please don't be afraid to reach out to ask somebody if you are needing help due to cold temperatures."

She says some medications can affect your response to the bitter cold temperatures.

"Talk to your doctor about your medications you may be taking to see how they may impact (you) when you're outside," says King. 

King adds it's important to check on your neighbors who are elderly or are in poor physical condition. 

"The state has a toll-free hotline where you can make a report of senior citizens or adults with disabilities who are in need of assistance due to cold temperatures. That number is 1-800-392-0210," says King. 

King again says to dress appropriately when heading outdoors. 

"When you do go outside make sure that you're dressing appropriately and that you're wearing a nice winter coat, a hat, scarf, gloves or mittens, waterproof warm boots," says King. 

King says it's important to keep an eye on the temperature and the weather to know how to properly respond each day.

St. Joseph Health Department warns about dangers of bitter cold weather

ATCHISON—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 4a.m. Wednesday, an employee of the Massasoit Apartments in the 200 block North 3rd Street in Atchison interrupted burglary, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

As the employee opened the office door, the suspect later identified as 39-year-old Gale Hewitt pointed a handgun at the employee.

The employee was able to flee that immediate area and called police. Officers arrived quickly but the suspect had fled after taking a handgun and cash, according to Wilson.

The same suspect described as a white male, 6-foot-2, stock build, bald head, a goatee and wearing a gray sweatshirt and bleached blue jeans, appeared at the door of a residence in the 200 block North 4th about 5:30a.m. He confronted the resident, displayed a gun during a conversation but left without taking anything.

By late Wednesday, police identified Hewitt as&nbsp;the suspect and just before 5p.m. a police officer spotted him driving a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser at 6th and “M” Street in Atchison.

 Hewitt got out of the vehicle holding a handgun and subsequently ran into a wooded area. Police officers were joined by Atchison County sheriff deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers at the scene as a perimeter around the wooded area was secured. At 5:18PM Hewitt was taken into custody north of the wooded area, just south of Harper Drive in the 500 block with the assistance of a Kansas Highway Patrol K-9.

Hewitt was transported to the hospital by EMS for treatment of minor injuries and subsequently taken to the County Jail, according to Wilson.

He is being held on requested charges that include burglary, aggravated assault, theft, theft of a firearm, criminal damage to property, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, and felony interference with law enforcement.
