HARRISON COUNTY—A Missouri woman was injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Wednesday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 GMC Acadia driven by Edith J. Hovey, 79, Bethany, was northbound on Findley Road just south of Dailey Road in Bethany.

The driver fell from the SUV. The vehicle then continued backwards, struck the driver, a mailbox and came to rest on the east side of the road.

LifeNet transported Hovey to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

The St. Joseph Historic Preservation Office along with the Landmark Commission are planning an event this weekend to honor the city's history and celebrate preservation.

The event is being called 'The Preservation Celebration' and it's set for this Saturday on Hall Street. St. Joseph Landmark Commission member Gracia Pinzino says the celebration will have a lot to offer.

"Starting at 2, it's going to be a street-party atmosphere," Pinzino said. "We're going to have the band Friends playing. We're going to have some light refreshments. Around 3, we're going to have a recognition ceremony about a couple different businesses and projects. People who have done great work in preservation."

The event runs from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, and it's free and open to the public.

Many homes and buildings in St. Joseph are historic structures.&nbsp; St. Joseph Historic Preservation planner Kim Schutte says this part of St. Joseph's history is worth celebrating, because it's all around.

"One of the things to remember in St. Joe is, no matter where you live, you probably live in a historic house," Schutte said. "Most of our building stock is over 50 years old. So, we'll have information on if you need help with your windows or best ways to handle your roof. Things like that."

The city has more than 50 properties and structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Schutte adds St. Joseph's history and unique architecture is a big draw for people who live outside the city.

"So much of our identity and what brings people to town as tourists and what makes it a great place to live is this unique building stock," she said. "These stories and this character we have. It's really important we be good stewards of the inventory we were given."

St. Joseph Historic Preservation, Landmark Commission holding 'Preservation Celebration'

New and old fisherman alike will have a chance to get some experience fishing at a clinic this weekend held by the Missouri Department of Conservation. &nbsp;

Department spokesman Bill Graham says the Discover Nature fishing clinic on Saturday, will not only feature classes about fishing, but a chance to get out and fish at the Everyday Pond on the Missouri Western campus. &nbsp;

"With the class instructor and volunteers helping out and the Department of Conservation provides all the equipment you need, we have the rods, the reels, the bait, the lures, everything people need to go fishing," Graham tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So, there's no cost it's free."&nbsp;

Graham says the clinic is for people of all ages and is a good opportunity to get that experience fishing. &nbsp;

Graham says he hasn't noticed a lack of interest in youth fishing, but says he has experienced teaching someone to fish who didn't grow up knowing how to fish.&nbsp;

"It is true that if you don't have the family heritage of fishing, it's a little difficult you have to have starting points, you know you can get line tangles, where you fish, hangs ups, those little tricks to getting around the problems that can make it a lot more fun to go fishing when you know those tricks," Graham explains. &nbsp;

Graham adds the Discover Nature fishing clinic on Saturday will teach you those tricks and more.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Graham says it's a delight for conservationists to see a young fisher have that spark lit when they catch their first fish at one of these clinics. &nbsp;

"But you gotta fan the flame too, and one beautiful thing about our Discover Nature Fishing program is that with the four different lessons and the four different types of fishing that come after the lessons, with the hands-on experience that they get, they get plenty of experience along with the how to," Graham says. &nbsp;

Get out and learn to fish this Saturday with the Missouri Department of Conservation

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on charges from out of state.

On Monday, police arrested 21-year-old Dwayne A. Nixon, 21, Atchison, on a State of New Jersey warrant for failure to appear in court.

He is being held without bond, according to online jail records.

Kansas man jailed on a warrant from New Jersey

Missouri Western State University and the city of St. Joseph are already thinking about the return of Kansas City Chiefs training camp later this summer.

Missouri Western chief of staff Chris Dunn says the University is lucky to have a great partner in the city to make training camp a reality.

"Not every University is lucky and fortunate to have what Missouri Western has, being a good partner with St. Joe," Dunn said. "There are other communities in the state of Missouri that have a public, four-year institution where the city and county don't cooperate as well as we cooperate."

New St. Joseph mayor John Josendale told Dunn during a city council work session Monday that he'd like to see the city embrace Missouri Western and do more to promote what the school does in general.

Dunn says it's a great feeling to hear that come from city hall.

"I think it makes (University president) Dr. (Elizabeth) Kennedy feel great," Dunn said. "I think it makes the board of governors feel great. We love being welcomed here. Wherever we can connect with the city, and with its people, we want to do that."

The University is asking the city for $7500 to help with the expense of renting the bleachers for training camp. The total cost for renting the bleachers for the entirety of camp is somewhere around $100,000.

The Chiefs have come to St. Joseph for training camp since 2010. This marks the last year of the agreement with the Chiefs with two more&nbsp; optional years after that. Dunn says the city and university remain committed to keeping training camp in St. Joseph.

"Both the University and community have both said we'll do whatever we need to do to keep the Chiefs in St. Joe, we're committed to doing," he said. "They've stepped up and done that. The county has provided resources, the city and the university have provided resources."

Dunn says getting the new athletic director in place will be very helpful in not only planning for training camp this year, but in the years ahead.

"We need somebody who is up to speed and knows what they're doing and will be at the table for the University as we find out what the Chiefs need for the next training camp."

Andrew Carter was named the University's new athletic director last week and he'll be introduced this coming Monday. Former Missouri Western athletic director and former Chiefs employee Josh Looney was instrumental in negotiating a long-term deal with the team.

As for this year, Dunn says the school expects to hear more guidance from the Chiefs soon as it pertains to training camp for this summer.

"We anticipate hearing from them a little bit more after the draft," Dunn said. "In the meantime, we're hopeful that with CDC guidelines and the fact that COVID numbers aren't what they are a year ago, that it will create an opportunity for the public and autograph seekers to come back to camp."

Fans were able to attend training camp last year, though they were not allowed to interact with players and get autographs.

The exact future of training camp will be decided in time, but one thing is certain - Missouri Western and the city of St. Joseph are going to do what they can to keep camp right where it is.

"It's important from them to be here if they're going to be away from Kansas City," Dunn reiterated. "Knowing what the past is, I'm very confident in the future we'll find a way to work things out with the Chiefs, whatever they need."

St. Joseph, Missouri Western looking ahead to Chiefs training camp in 2022 and beyond

The Mosaic Life Care Foundation has given money to help out a high school in northeast Kansas. 

Troy High School in Troy, Kansas has been given $4,435.50 to help with the high schools beautification project, through the Foundations Jump Starter grant.

The project will help enhance the look of the high school, and increase school pride, as well as bring the community together.

“The community service that we are doing here at school is going to make it look a lot nicer in the front and is going to rally our community a little bit and get everyone more excited to come here,” Troy High School Senior Griffin Weber says in a news release.

Through the project students will gain real world volunteer experience, practice leadership, problem solving, planning, and time management.  The project is planned to be completed around June 1st.

Mosaic Life Care helping to beautify northeast Kansas High School

Fire officials in St. Joseph have seen a growing number of fires, just in the first four months of the new year.  

From January to the end of March the St. Joseph Fire Department saw 62 fires in different parts of the city.  

Fire Inspector Steve Henrichson says the number of fires has gone up in April, with the department seeing different types of fires.  

"There's the intentional ones and there's plenty of them that were unintentional," Henrichson tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "As of this morning we're at 75 this year for building fires." 

Henrichson says a number of the fires the department saw from January through March, were set intentionally.  

"11 out of the 62 fires this year were definitely, intentionally set," Henrichson explains. "We have a lot more fires this year but, some of them are still under investigation so those could go either way." 

Henrichson says at least 17 of the fires were set unintentionally.  

As April comes to an end, St. Joseph residents may have not gotten a chance to burn their yard waste after Open Burning was forced to cancel numerous times.  

Henrichson says most of the canceled open burning days were due to high winds in the city.  

"That was the fear of it spreading was because of the wind, I mean you get an ember, we've had embers travel half a block before, especially on a house fire," Henrichson says. "When we get some of them going, we can watch the embers travel half a block or more with the airwaves, so we wanted to be sure with the high winds you definitely don't want weeds and things like that floating around burning." 

Henrichson says as of right now there have been no discussions to extend open burning due to the number of canceled days.  

Open Burning ends in St. Joseph April 30th.

Walk the red carpet, get your picture taken, and have a nice dinner, all at the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art for the 44th annual Pot of Gold Gala. &nbsp;

Museum Executive Director Eric Fuson says the gala is a great opportunity to get everyone together, not just to help raise money for the museum, but also to socialize&nbsp;

He says that was noticeable last year, as the Pot of Gold gala was the first big event at the museum post COVID regulations. &nbsp;

"It was hard to get everybody on to the business of things because it was just so good to be back out and talking with people," Fuson tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "That's part of this, it's not just all about the fundraising part, although that's a major part for us, it really is a way for us to kind of gather as a community and share what we love about the museum."&nbsp;

Museum goers that come to the gala are encouraged to dress fancy, or even as one of their favorite movie characters, as part of the theme 'Rolling out the red carpet'&nbsp;

Fuson says from the moment you arrive at the museum; it will feel like you're in Hollywood. &nbsp;

"When they come in, they can expect to see some paparazzi as they come down the red carpet, we'll have a few cameras going off taking their pictures," Fuson explains. "And then, we will have hors d'oeuvres between five and six, so they'll be passed around as you go around our silent auction and kind of watch your favorite items so you can bid on those, as well as do a little socializing."&nbsp;

Guests will also be served a nice dinner starting at 6pm, with an auction starting at around 7pm. &nbsp;

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are&nbsp;investigating a burglary that occurred at a residence in the 300 block Kansas Avenue in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

The crime occurred sometime between 3:35AM and 1:40PM on Friday. Three firearms, a box of knives, and liquor were taken with a total value of $1,850, Wilson reported on Monday.

Man hospitalized in St. Joe after motorcycle accident

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged domestic battery that occurred on March 31.

On April 21, police arrested 44-year-old&nbsp;Scott D. Keller, Jr., of Atchison,&nbsp; on a District Court warrant, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Mosaic Life Care Hospice officials encourage everyone to have a plan ready for a day you may not be able to make your own health care decisions. &nbsp;

Director of Hospice Kassie Hodge says everyone is encouraged to create their advanced directives. She says there are two parts to an advanced directive.&nbsp;

"One, tell your family members what your wishes are, that's the part that says hey if I'm unable to speak for myself this is what I would like," Hodge tells reporters. "So that kind of helps guide their decision making in those difficult situations."&nbsp;

Hodge says the other part is the Durable Power of Attorney, which guarantees for the hospital that someone you've authorized can make decisions for you.&nbsp;

Mosaic Life Care Hospice is holding events to help people create their Advanced Directives in association with National Decision Day.&nbsp;

"It has helped bring awareness to the fact that people need their advanced directives in place," Hodge explains. "We are one of very few states that is actually not a next of kin state, so not every state requires DPOA paperwork unfortunately we do, and hopefully we're working on strides with our government to help change that, however in the time being this is what we are left with."&nbsp;

Hodge says with Missouri not being a next-of-kin state, that means unless you have the proper paperwork, your marital or relationship status to a person in the hospital gives you no power to decide for them.&nbsp;

Hodge says the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light the importance of having Advanced Directives. &nbsp;

"More so than in years past and so, it's that if they go into the hospital and they do not of a DPOA in place, there's no decisions that can be made," Hodge says. "They're pretty much on hold until guardianship can be obtained, which can cost thousands of dollars, two to three thousand dollars easily."&nbsp;

Hodge says it's more frequent than people might think that people run into issues of not being able to give directions, because the proper paperwork is not at the hospital.&nbsp;

Now's the time to consider an Advanced Directive, not later

A number of St. Joseph restaurants will provide new menu items for area residents during the third annual Restaurant Week.&nbsp;

St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce spokeswoman Kristi Bailey says all restaurants are asked to do to participate, is to offer something new on its menu for the week. &nbsp;

Bailey says the hope for Restaurant Week is to encourage people to visit local restaurants during slower periods.&nbsp;

"Previously we've done it in February this year there's been some issues with supply chain and so this year we've kind of pushed it back a little bit," Bailey tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "But, this time of year isn't a super busy time of year for restaurants either so, they were fine with doing it in May."&nbsp;

Bailey says the biggest goal of the week is to put an influx of revenue into local St. Joseph restaurants.&nbsp;

Bailey says the first Restaurant Week occurred in 2020, just before everything shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. &nbsp;

"Last year it was affected, there were some places that weren't fully opened, so all of the restaurants were required to have carry out options for people that were not comfortable with dining in," Bailey explains. "So, this year all the restrictions are off as far as COVID goes."&nbsp;

Bailey says any St. Joseph area restaurant can participate, all the Chambers asks is that the restaurant come up with a new menu or menu item for the week. &nbsp;

Hosted by the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, Restaurant Week will run May 10th through the 17th. A list of restaurants participating will be released just before the event.&nbsp;

Bailey says there has been a lot of excitement around this event. &nbsp;

"Especially last year when everyone was hurting, everyone needed business, they were very excited that the Chamber and JoeTown Fun continued to do Restaurant Week to try to get more customers into their business," Bailey says.&nbsp;

Bailey says the number of restaurants already signed up is already close to the number from last year. She expects to pass it by the May 1st sign-up deadline.&nbsp;

Missouri Western State University will give people a chance to see all the opportunities for applied learning at the St. Joseph campus. &nbsp;

The Inaugural Griffon Applied Learning Showcase will begin at 8am on Friday.&nbsp;

Director of the office of applied learning Mike Ducey says this event is a chance to celebrate the successes of applied learning students&nbsp;

"Not ony with one another, we sometimes celebrate well internally, but we wanted to take this as an opportunity to share it with our community, to share it with alumni, to share it with family members of our students," Ducey tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "So, it's really kicking the doors open and letting everybody see the great work that the students do."&nbsp;

Ducey says it's exciting as an office to get to see students show off all of their hard work. &nbsp;

"And some of them, not just spent a term on it, but some of them might spend years on the works that they're presenting," Ducey proudly explains. "And so, it's always exciting for us as faculty members to see them get to a point where they can begin to really show this huge amount of effort that they've put into this."&nbsp;

Ducey says one event during the day will show off several of the applied learning spaces&nbsp;

"So that folks can come in and see applied learning spaces, so for example nursing and the simulation labs, the amazing simulation labs that they have," Ducey says. &nbsp;

Ducey adds this event was one they wanted to make sure they made time for.&nbsp;

"We wanted to be sure we carved out a time to, not just showcase the students, but to showcase the way that we engage our students in applied learning," Ducey explains. &nbsp;

The day will begin on Friday with the Student Art Exhibit opening in Potter Hall at 8am.&nbsp; The final event of the day will be the <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/f40fa459-8928-4eab-9ed1-840c5c63a50b">MWSU Student Film Festival at Missouri Theater</a>.&nbsp;

Missouri Western ready to showcase applied learning for the first time ever

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on new charges after an arrest.

Sidney M. Darrenkamp, 22, Atchison, was charged on Tuesday by District Court warrants for fleeing and attempting to elude, reckless driving, and other traffic violations in connection to incidents on April 16 and April 17, according to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Officers had attempted to stop a vehicle she was driving.&nbsp;

She has previous convictions for theft and drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

officers, but is more optimistic as he recruits personnel for the St. Joseph
Police Department.

Connally says the department seems to be seeing more interest
with more applications for police officer coming in.

“It’s going the right direction,” Connally tells host Barry
Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “I think something else that’ll help, if we can get
more of the positives out there, the positive experience of officers, the
positive impacts on the community out there on things like social media, hoping
that will generate some additional interest.”

Connally says not all applicants follow through, but the more
who apply the greater chance of filling vacant positions.

The St. Joseph Police Department has 23 vacancies. The
department is authorized to have 138 commissioned officers.

St. Joseph Police Chief optimistic of filling vacancies as more applications come in

Missouri Western State University's E-Sports team is hosting a 24-hour livestream for charity, starting at 4 p.m. Thursday and lasting until 4 p.m. on Friday.

The stream will originate from the Griffon E-sports Arena in the Blum Student Union and can be viewed on the program’s Twitch channel, which is <a href="https://www.twitch.tv/griffon_Esports">Twitch.TV/griffon_Esports</a>.

Missouri Western e-sports coach and director Luke Theis says the team started doing these livestreams for charity last March, when their arena first opened.

"It went so well," Theis said. "The students loved it. It was a great experience for them, and we also get to give back to the community, which is a big plus. We kind of just wanted to continue it each semester."&nbsp;

Griffon E-sports is again partnering with Extra Life to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Those watching the stream will be asked to contribute via the team’s Extra Life page.

The team raised more than $5000 for Children's Miracle Network last year after holding livestream events in the fall and spring.

Theis says there are two main benefits of doing this livestream event.

"One is the applied learning for the students," he said. "The second thing is giving back to the community. As a program, one of our biggest focuses is giving back. So, it's awesome that we get to do this livestream. That we get to support Children's Miracle Network and support their cause."

The stream will include two special one-on-one Rocket League matches, featuring University president Elizabeth Kennedy against vice president for finance and administration Darrell Morrison at 11 a.m. on Friday.

 Chief of staff Chris Dunn will then play chief communications officer Becky Dunn at 2 p.m. on Friday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a Chevy passenger vehicle driven by Megan L. Zimmerman, 38, Sioux City, IA., was southbound on Interstate 29 at U.S. 36.&nbsp;

The driver was following a 1995 Toyota passenger vehicle driven by Daniela Castillo, 36, St. Joseph, too closely. The Chevy struck the Toyota.

After impact the Toyota traveled off the road and struck a cable barrier. Buchanan County EMS transported Castillo to Mosaic Life Care. Zimmerman was not injured. Castillo was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

St. Joseph woman hospitalized after rear-end crash

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on new charges after his third arrest in the past year.

On Tuesday, police arrested 19-year-old Elijah Z. Haley, 19, Atchison, on a District Court warrant for possession of marijuana, transporting an open container, and interference with law enforcement, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

In July, police arrested Haley on requested charges of aggravated battery. In April of 2021 he was booked into jail on a bond violation, according to online jail records.

 </figure>ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on new charges after his third arrest in the past year.On Tuesday, police arrested 19-year-old Elijah Z. Haley, 19, Atchison, on a District Court warrant for possession of marijuana, transporting an open container, and interference with law enforcement, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.In July, police arrested Haley on requested charges of aggravated battery. In April of 2021 he was booked into jail on a bond violation, according to online jail records.

Missouri Western State University has named Andrew Carter as the school's next athletic director. The University made the formal announcement late Wednesday afternoon.

The University made the formal announcement late Wednesday afternoon.Carter is currently the A.D. at NCAA Division II Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. He'll start at Missouri Western on May 2, and an introductory press conference will be held on that day."In visiting with Andy, it was clear that he understands our mission," said Missouri Western president Elizabeth Kennedy in a statement. "With 25 years of experience as an athletics director, there is very little he hasn't seen. He believes in the importance of character and leadership development."Kennedy continued, "Having been a coach himself, he understands better than most the value of the student athlete experience. Andy will be a great fit on my leadership team, on campus and in our community.""I'm incredibly humbled and honored to be joining the team at Missouri Western," Carter said in a statement of his own. "This is something that my wife and I prayed about for some time. We feel strongly that this is where we're supposed to be and it's an awesome opportunity for us to come home to Missouri."Carter has over 30 years of experience in college athletics - the last 25 as an athletic director at NAIA Missouri Baptist University and DII schools Newberry College, Armstrong Atlantic State and Northwestern Oklahoma State before joining Minot State in 2016.Carter was appointed to the NCAA Division II Membership Committee in 2019 and has served in numerous other leadership roles at NCAA conference levels.Carter has also had a successful baseball coaching career, leading his team at Missouri Baptist to seven consecutive American Midwest Conference championships, earning seven conference coach of the year awards and being inducted into the Missouri Baptist Athletic Hall of Fame."President Kennedy and her vision for the university is attractive," Carter said. "Athletically, the Griffons play in a power conference in Division II. The MIAA has a tremendous history."Carter attended East Central College, has a bachelor of science degree from Missouri Baptist and a master of business administration from Lindenwood.&nbsp;He spent his early years in mid-Missouri and graduated from high school in St. Charles, where he met his wife Rena.They have seven children and eleven grandchildren. He's excited to introduce himself to the community."I am relationship-focused," Carter said. "This is a people business. My focus is on developing people to be the very best version of themselves and help them have the best experience they can have. I'm here to serve people, and that goes for our students, for our staff and coaches, and for our fans."Carter will become the school's ninth athletic director.
