Dallas Austin Matson 26, of St Joseph, MO, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023 in St Joseph. He was born April 8, 1997 in St. Joseph.

 Dallas attended Lafayette High School. Dallas loved dogs, taking walks, and taking care of others. 

Survivors include: his mother, Jackie Churchill of Sedalia, MO, his son, Adrian Brown and his mother Mackenzee Brown, siblings, Katelynn Giles and Johnathon Kieser of St. Joseph, maternal grandparents, Susan (Randy) Barker and Terry Matson, maternal great-grandmothers, Janice Waters and Rhonda Wright, aunt, Tara Matson, great-aunt, Michelle Miller, his best friend, Nathan Hutchison, all of St. Joseph, and numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the Rupp Funeral Home. Dallas will be cremated following services.

We will always remember Bob Blythe fondly as a friendly man filled with love and passion for his family and community. Born September 29, 1928 in Gallatin, Missouri, he fulfilled a life journey that concluded on August 12, 2023.

Bob was a devoted husband to Evelyn (Metzinger) Blythe, a loving father to sons Mark (Tresa) and Matt (Stacy), and a cheerleader to his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His supportive presence will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Brett (Jena), Kenzie, Paige (Darren), Torri (Christian) and great-grandchildren Avery, Kyrie, Braydi, Collins, Raye, and Bennett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville E. and Helen Z. (Minnick) Blythe.

Bob had a decorated history of service, having served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was also known for his community involvement, active as a leader for Boy Scout Troop 102 in Albany, Missouri, and mentoring young men as a Medicine Man for the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He took pleasure in coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, and cherished the time spent watching his grandchildren play ball games.

The memory of Bob's friendly nature will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy will forever remind us to live fully, love unconditionally, lead with kindness and always eat dessert.

Gary McKeown, 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023.

He was born November 20, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Patrick and Evelyn (Harkins) McKeown. He grew up in the Des Moines/West Des Moines area.

Right after graduating from high school, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served his country in San Diego during the Cuban Missile Crisis era.

Gary returned to West Des Moines after his active military service and worked for Delavan Manufacturing in the heat-treat department. He served four years of Naval Reserves at Fort Des Moines.

Gary married Jo Ranae Taylor on June 27, 1964. They moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where he was a metallurgist for Eaton Corp. from 1970 until he retired in 1997. He worked various jobs after retirement.

In 2004, Jo retired and they moved to an acreage near Savannah, Missouri, then in 2009 they moved to their retirement home in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Gary enjoyed many years of camping and volunteering, and the 12 winters he and Jo spent at their home in Arizona.

Gary was a jack of all trades who could fix anything. He was deeply devoted to his family, who loved to hear his whistling and will greatly miss him.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jo; children, Susan Carlisle (Dave) of St. Joseph, Stephanie Carter (Barry) of Omaha, Nebraska, Shawna Modlin (Jay) of Kansas City, Missouri, Tricia George (Chris Duke) of St. Joseph, Ryan McKeown (Rhonda) of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Heather Schultz (Jordan) of Auburn, Nebraska; grandchildren, Andrew and Jordan Carlisle, Jacob Carter (Cassidy), Megan Hough (Trevor), Kate and Holly Modlin, Carson and Stefan Loewe, Berkley George, Olivia, Alex and Bella Duke, Selena and DeVonte Perez, Davion Douglas-Beggs, Taylor and Mason Schultz; three great-grandchildren; sister, Sondra Short (Jackson) of Warrensburg, Missouri; numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Evelyn Sledd McClure went to be with her Lord on Friday, August 11, 2023. Born on September 21, 1922 to loving parents (Uel and Ona Sledd) in Fleming, Kentucky. Evelyn moved with her family to St. Joseph when she was 16 years old. She attended Central High School and graduated from Iowa State College with a degree in Dietetics in 1944. In the same year, she married her beloved husband, Dr. Birt W. McClure, and they spent their life together raising their three boys, traveling the world, collecting antiques, and enjoying the company of close friends.

Evelyn was a loving and caring mother, dedicated homemaker, and valued member of the community. She was a faithful parishioner of the First Presbyterian Church, serving at times as Deacon, Elder, and President of “The Women of Church”.

As a child of the Great Depression, she was remarkably strong and diligently thrifty. She was raised with strong morals and gratefulness, which influenced her passion for charity. Her generosity was evidenced in countless acts of service. She was a loyal volunteer, spending more than 50 years serving at the hospital and donating her time to the library.

Evelyn was a lifetime member of The Flower Society of St. Joseph, Questers, PEO, and Runcie Club, and she most enjoyed spending time playing Mahjongg (and bridge in her younger years) with her dear friends. She had passion for gardening, volunteering, hosting friends, and working on Springbok puzzles. She was meticulous, organized, and set the bar exceedingly high in terms of documenting life events.

Evelyn (Evie to some) was a good friend. Full of wisdom, grace, and sincerity, she appreciated the importance of keeping in touch with loved ones, and maintained countless valued friendships, many life-long.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Birt, eldest son, Marc (Susan), and grandson, Shawn (Tracy). She is succeeded in death by her dear sister, Carolyn Thomas (Henry), sons Keith (Jacqueline) and Michael (Deborah), seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Michael R. Swope, beloved brother and friend, passed away on August 11, 2023, at the age of 71. Born on February 20, 1952, in St. Joseph, Missouri, Michael was a man of great strength and character.

Jacob Dean Engelman, 31, beloved son of Jimmie and Christina Engelman, of Leavenworth, Kansas, passed away on August 9th, 2023. He is survived by his mother and father, his brother, Enoch with his wife, Courtney and their sons, Bryce, Archie, Oliver and expecting Dutton in November. Also by his siter Abigail Dickerson with her husband, John and their daughter Edith Marie.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy.

We miss them both more than words could ever express. We will be with them again because of the salvation given freely to us through the Cross of Christ- the blood of Jesus, that we have accepted. John 14:6.

Sonya J. Bergman, 76, of Hoyt, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at her home in Hoyt.

She was born on January 2, 1947 in Alma, KS, the daughter of Karl and Ella Hasenbank Fink, in the middle of a snowstorm at her Grandparents home.&nbsp;

On June 20, 1981; Sonya married her loving, unwavering husband Eugene “Gene” Bergman at the First United Methodist Church in Hoyt. &nbsp;He survives, of the home. Her family was most important to her and showered us all with love.

Other survivors include her children, Pam Moseley (Mike) Doug Bergman (Vicky), Sara Rose (Chris) and Suzy McCord (Jason); her sister, Shelia Murray; grandchildren, Michael Moseley (Elizabeth), Larry Michael Hladky, Brandy Bedford (Tyler), Cheyenne Bergman, Gage Bergman, Quincy McCord (Frankie), Hillari Lynn (Daniel), Katlyn Rose and Kolby Holthaus; great grandchildren, Jayden, Henry, Grace, Korbin, Kaiden, Amelia, Scarlett and Penelope, and many many other family and friends.&nbsp;

Sonya loved doing crafts and had her own ceramics room, where every summer for many years she would teach local 4-H kids the process of ceramics and how to paint them. She loved to go shopping at craft stores in search of her next new project. Another favorite hobby she had was taking pictures of everything. You would find her many times with a camera in her hand. She captured Senior pictures for not only her own children but several of their friends. She was most proud of her award-winning photo, “Deep Sea Diving at Grandma’s”.&nbsp;

Sonya retired from Royal Valley School District where she started as a janitor then moved into the kitchen and became one of the RVHS “Kooks.” She took pride in providing great tasting school lunches and made the best breads and desserts. She was “mom” to all her kids’ friends and many still today.

Sonya was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Ella (Hasenbank) Fink, her sisters, Sylvia Spangler and Schrita Fink, and her brother, Steven Fink.&nbsp;

She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, Mayetta, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 18th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. &nbsp;Burial will follow in St. Jospeh Cemetery at Hoyt. &nbsp;Sonya will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m., followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m.

Beverly J. Gregory, 86, of Trimble, MO passed away Sunday, August 13, 2023.

She was born on October 3, 1936, to Alva and Fostine (Gulledge) Bacon in Fairfax, MO. Beverly moved to Trimble, MO in 1975 where she made her home and raised her family.

Beverly enjoyed gardening. canning, and camping. Most of all, she loved being a homemaker and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents Alva and Fostine Bacon; her husbands Dale Gregory and Ivan Gregory; her son Keith Gregory; three brothers and three sisters.&nbsp;

Beverly is survived by her children Rick Gregory and wife Regina, Brenda King and Shirley Price; grandchildren Melinda (Eric) Stear, Ricky (Melissa) Gregory, Cody Price, Whitley (Patrick) McLeod, and Rachel King; nine great-grandchildren; brothers Bill (Donna) Bacon, Eddie (Irene) Bacon, and Bob (Jean) Bacon; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.&nbsp;

Paulette Angel Reinosky, 74, of Leavenworth, KS, passed away August 11, 2023.

She was born on July 9, 1949, in Alton, Illinois. The family moved to Las Angels, CA where she grew up and attended high school. Paulette later moved to Bouton, IA where she raised her children. She met her husband, Richard, while she was living in Charlotte, North Carolina.

On October 29, 1993, she was united in marriage to Richard Reinosky. After their marriage, they traveled all over the United States and in 2001, they settled in Camden Point, MO. They later moved to Leavenworth, KS where they were currently living.&nbsp;

Paulette enjoyed gardening and making crafts.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents John Carl Payne, Sr and Grace Marie (Chapman) Payne.

Roselee Smith, 71, of Atchison, Kansas, passed from this life Friday, August 11, 2023 at Atchison Senior Village.

Roselee was born June 10, 1952, in White Cloud, KS, the daughter of Charles David Blakley and Elizabeth Jane (Staines) Blakley. She graduated from Weston High School.&nbsp;

She married Ernest J. Smith, Sr., on July 21, 1973, in Atchison, Kansas, and they shared over thirty years together until his passing on September 30, 2006.&nbsp;

Roselee was formerly a member of the First Baptist Church in Atchison, where she ran the church nursery for seventeen years; she later joined Crossroads Chapel in Rushville. She was a homemaker and a devoted wife and mother to her family. She had a knack for working on puzzles, enjoyed travelling and camping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.&nbsp;

Left to cherish her memory include her children, Paul (Tracy) Smith, Charles (Melissa) Smith; Donna (Tom) Earl, Jewel Reese; a brother, Bill Blakley; eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernie Smith, Sr.; a sister, Almeda White; and a son, Ernie Smith, Jr.&nbsp;

Services to celebrate and remember Roselee’s life will be Monday, August 14, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Pastor Tommy Silva as officiant. He attended Central High School and completed his apprenticeship through the Carpenters Local 110 union, of which he was a proud member.

Scott enjoyed being in the outdoors, whether it was on the water with his fishing rod or tending to his garden. He could also be found at the bowling alley, enjoying a favorite pastime.

Scott loved working with his hands and using his talents to build handcrafted items. He was a proud father of five daughters and enjoyed making countless memories with them.

Scott had a genuine, loving spirit and will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ethan and Mary Campbell, maternal grandmother, Patsy Butcher, and great-grandparents.

He attended Doniphan West High School, and he enjoyed wrestling in high school. He also enjoyed fishing, power lifting, and hanging out with his grandpa and friends.

Nakoma Gomer 1998 - 2023

John Lawrence Hartman, Sr passed into eternal peace on August 9, 2023 with his beloved “Myrnie” and the family they built together by his side. Born on October 9, 1935 to Wendelin and Susanna (Ochs) Hartman in Park, KS; Johnny was raised and worked on his family farm south of Grainfield, KS until he graduated from Gove Rural High School in 1954. Upon graduation, he moved to St Joseph, MO where he met the love of his life, Myrna Lee Munroe. They were united in marriage on February 15, 1958 at St Francis Xavier Church in St Joseph, MO. She survives him of the home.

Their marriage was blessed with five children: Delora (Russell) Leslie, Pamela Hartman, Andi (Mark) Dryer, John (Stacey) Hartman, and Mark (Meredith) Hartman. Their family home was filled with his perfectly timed humor and unending love and support. After their children were grown and in their own homes, Johnny was always on call to serve as their personal handyman and never let them leave his house empty handed.

Johnny was known for his impeccable work ethic. As he said it, “If you’re going to do a job, do it right.” and that he did. Once he moved to St Joseph, he started his career at the St Joseph Stockyards. He then dedicated the next 32 years to Seitz Foods, where he retired in 2001 as a Utility Worker. While keeping perfect attendance at Seitz, he also managed to roof and expertly paint many houses in town. He served in the Air National Guard from 1957 to 1962.

During retirement he found enjoyment in his beautiful yard where he grew the biggest and best tomatoes, spent quality time passing on his love of gardening to his family, and gave his grandchildren many rides on his homemade barrel train. When not in his yard, or at Menards cashing in his rebates, you could find him always at Myrna’s side at his grandchildren’s ballgames, school programs, or any gathering that allowed him to celebrate his family. He was their biggest fan.

He lived a life full of hard work, laughter, and so much love. We picture him looking down from Heaven to all his family and friends giving his famous farmer’s wave saying, “Can I say thanks?”

Preceded in death by his parents, siblings Thomas (Roberta) Hartman, Helen (Edward) Grace, Mary (Frank) Heir, Leroy Hartman, and Anthony Hartman, and son-in-law Russell Leslie, Jr.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, John is survived by his siblings; Florence (Larry) Goetz, Vera Hartman, his children, his grandchildren Dana (Josh) Barton, TJ (Mindy) Marriott, Ryan McCray, Shayna Kennedy, Bailey (Ryan Lankford) Marriott, Taylor McCray, Jacob Kennedy, Chassie (Stephen) Culver, Ali (David) Black, Tanner (Joey) Stauss, Jacob Dryer, Trey (Kaitlyn) Hartman, Maddie Dryer, Josh Dryer, Luke Hartman and Dane Hartman, 18 great-grandchildren with twins on the way, and numerous other family members and friends.

Parish Rosary will be recited at 5:30pm, Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will follow from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

Mass of Christian Burial 10:00am, Monday, August 14, 2023 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

As he said it, “If you’re going to do a job, do it right.” and that he did. Once he moved to St Joseph, he started his career at the St Joseph Stockyards. He then dedicated the next 32 years to Seitz Foods, where he retired in 2001 as a Utility Worker. While keeping perfect attendance at Seitz, he also managed to roof and expertly paint many houses in town. He served in the Air National Guard from 1957 to 1962.During retirement he found enjoyment in his beautiful yard where he grew the biggest and best tomatoes, spent quality time passing on his love of gardening to his family, and gave his grandchildren many rides on his homemade barrel train. When not in his yard, or at Menards cashing in his rebates, you could find him always at Myrna’s side at his grandchildren’s ballgames, school programs, or any gathering that allowed him to celebrate his family. He was their biggest fan.He lived a life full of hard work, laughter, and so much love. Cheryl Ann Wright, 70, of Platte City, MO, passed away on August 7, 2023. She was born on December 13, 1952, in Pomona, California. 

Cheryl was a devout Christian who loved sharing his word with others. 2 Corinthians 5:7 states “Walk By Faith, Not By Sight” This was One of her favorite verses and it was how she chose to live each day! 

Cheryl is survived by her loving husband, Monte Wright and her children Charity (Danny) Bishop, Len Wright, Julie (Jamie) Orr and Dawn (Lance) Kooser. Cheryl had many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren who brought her so much joy. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. 

A celebration of life will be held in the honor of Cheryl at Rollins Funeral Home in Platte City on Saturday August 12th from 4-6pm. The service will provide an opportunity for family and friends to come together to remember and celebrate Cheryl’s life.

Georgia M. Baublit, 95, Rushville, Missouri, died Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Carriage Square Nursing Home in St. Joseph, Missouri.&nbsp;

Memorial services will be Sunday, August 13th, at 4:00 P.M. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sugar Creek Cemetery in Rushville, Missouri. Memorial contributions are suggested to Three Rivers Hospice and may be left in care of the funeral home.&nbsp;

Georgia was born September 7, 1927, in Trenton, Missouri, the daughter of Carl J. and Cordia E. (Bofman) Leihr.&nbsp;

She and Franklin A. Baublit were married November 8, 1976, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mr. Baublit preceded her in death on January 24, 2002.

Georgia was employed at the St. Joseph state hospital as a nursing supervisor for over 19 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Over the years she had various hobbies that included sewing and crocheting. Georgia was an avid archer and belonged to an archery club. She was a member of the New Home Baptist Church and enjoyed taking her grandchildren to church.&nbsp;

Survivors include a son, Richard (Nancy) Bozarth, Rushville, MO, daughters, Lenora (Robert) Justus, Neosho, MO, Brenda (Jerry) Fischer, Savannah, MO, Susan (Donald) Cottrill, St. Joseph, MO, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Carl E. Leihr, a daughter, Lucinda Sue Cook, a son-in-law, Tom Cook, a grandson, Tommy Cook, a great-great granddaughter, Blakely Jones, and a brother, Charles Donelson.

Warren 'Fred' Hays 1949 - 2023

Mark Edward Smith, 70, of Trimble, Missouri passed away August 7th, 2023. He was born May 5th, 1953, to the late Dewel Smith and Betty (Jones) Smith in Fredericktown, Missouri.

Mark was raised in Des Arc, Missouri, and accepted Christ as his personal Savior at age 6. Mark graduated from South Iron High School in 1971. On May 25th, 1974, he married his one true love, Theresa. Together, they worked in ministry in Mark’s father’s church in Des Arc, Missouri. In 1976, Mark and Theresa moved to Tennessee, joined the Church of God, and started pursuing active ministry. Mark became a licensed minister in the Church of God at the age of 26. Mark and Theresa pastored their church in 1980 in Flat River, Missouri for five years, during which Mark became an Exhorter in the Church of God. They pastored the Church of God in Joplin, Missouri for three years. The longest pastoral ministry was in Cuba, Mo, starting in 1988 until 2011, where lifelong friendships were developed, and the congregation played an important role in Mark and his family’s life. While in Cuba, Mo, Mark became Ordained on August 15th, 1988. Mark continued to further his ministry by becoming an Ordained Bishop on June 7, 1990. God, then, led Mark to pastor in St. Joseph, Missouri until God called him home.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Theresa Smith and his two daughters, Rachel Eckles of Smithville, Missouri (husband William Eckles) and Treva Finley of St. Joseph, Missouri (husband Josh Finley); four grandchildren, Dylan Eckles (13), Austin Eckles (10), Ava Dodrill (10), and Audrey Finley (3), and his brother Thomas Smith, wife Sandy Smith, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends and members of his congregation at Abundant Faith Church of God, who loved and supported him through the end of his ministry.

Mark was an avid fisherman, golfer and loved to take the grandchildren out on the boat tubing.

Mark faithfully dedicated his life to the ministry and made an impact on everyone he met. Mark’s mantra in life was the Church is a healing center for a hurting world. Mark was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud Papa.

Jerry Franklin Zembles, 85, a beloved resident of Mound City, MO, peacefully passed away on Sunday morning, August 6, 2023, at the Oregon Health Care Center near his home. He was born on October 27, 1937, in St. Joseph, MO, to the late Vida and Joseph Zembles.

Jerry's life was a testament to dedication, service, and a spirit of adventure. He attended Lafayette High School before moving on to serve his country as a proud member of the United States Marine Corps as a Special Radio Operator conducting electronic anti-warfare surveillance. His dedication to his nation was a reflection of his strong character and sense of duty.

Jerry's professional path encompassed diverse experiences, each of which he approached with unwavering commitment. He worked at Armour and Company, where his work ethic and camaraderie left a lasting impact. Later, his role as a Security Officer at Ak-Sar-Ben Raceway and Coliseum showcased his sense of responsibility and his commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the public.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Jerry embraced life with a vigor that inspired all who knew him. He found solace in the tranquility of fishing, the adventure of camping, and the allure of exploring new horizons through travel. Riding his motorcycle on open roads allowed him to feel the freedom that only the wind can provide. A true master tinkerer, Jerry had a knack for breathing life into the most intricate of mechanisms. Jerry's passion for communication extended to becoming a licensed ham radio operator (WBOVQY), where he skillfully bridged distances and created connections that transcended boundaries. Additionally, his years spent farming reflected his deep connection with nature and the importance of hard work.

Jerry was predeceased by his parents, as well as his brother William Nolan III and sister Lisa Bledsoe. 

He is survived by his loving sons: Shawn (Anna) Zembles of Columbia, MO; Shane Zembles of Wauwatosa, WI; and Christopher (Dana) Zembles of Mound City, MO. He also leaves behind his sisters Marthalee Ford and Roxy Jo White.

Jerry's legacy is beautifully embodied in his cherished grandchildren: Jacob (Sally) Zembles, Brandon (Lacy) Zembles, Joel (Christina) Zembles, Jessica Zembles, Josh Zembles, Lane Zembles, Keaton Zembles, Nathan Zembles, Matthew Zembles, and Grace Zembles. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Bryliegh Zembles, Bryn Zembles, and Ava Zembles.

A memorial service, adorned with military honors, will be conducted at the Leavenworth National Cemetery on Tuesday, August, 15th at 1430 hours.&nbsp;
