Rita Gail (Cage) Williams, 66, St. Joseph, Missouri, departed this life peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on March 12, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born January 15, 1956, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Rita attended several St. Joseph Elementary Schools (Horace Mann, Everett, McKinley, and Washington); and is part of the Alumni of Lafayette High School in 1974. She attended Missouri Western College and received a degree in Criminal Justice and was also apart of their Sigma Kappa Alumni, she also attended Platt College receiving a diploma in Word Processing, and Hillyard Trade School with a Data Processing Degree. Rita enjoyed collecting African artwork and artifacts as well as other collectibles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elnora Cage and Frederick Moore, Sr.; stepfather, Clarence Paige, Sr; sisters, Idell Cozetta Paige, Mary Cage; brothers, Paul Mays and Clarence Paige, Jr.

She is survived by her special beloved dog, December; stepdaughter, Jessica Carson, Columbia, Missouri; sisters, Regina Mcpherson (Cornelius), Leavenworth, Kansas, Nancy Rucker (Steve), Gwenever “Gwennie” Wilson, St. Joseph, Missouri, Sandra Preston (Thomas), Omaha, Nebraska; brother, Robert Cage; 4 granddaughters, Janaia “Boobie” Cason, Jamazanae “Mazzie” Brewster, Jamirria “Mirri” Brewster, Jamonyea “MonYea” Brewster, Columbia, Missouri; great-aunt, Gladys; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and special friends.

Kathleen Marie Smith, 72, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, March 11, 2022.

She was born October 3, 1949 in Hastings, Nebraska to Jack and Fern (Carter) Smith. The family later moved to Arkansas City, Kansas, where she grew up and graduated from Arkansas City High School. She was formerly married to Edward Emberry, Rudy Lee Hernandez, and John Green. She remained friends with all of them.

Kathy was very interested in women’s fashion and had a gift for helping women find the right accessories. This gift led her to work at Mode O’Day in Arkansas City, then after moving to St. Joseph and working as a beautician for a while, she worked at The Paris, Sears, and J.C. Penney, where she retired. She truly loved what she did. She was a good homemaker and cook. Her family fondly remembers waiting by the oven for Kathy’s “Can’t Wait Casserole” to come out. She also baked Christmas goodies to give as gifts, and enjoyed sewing and spending time with family. Kathy was a Christian who loved the Lord and was a true Prayer Warrior.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren, Seth Aaron and Rickey Jr.; and former husband, John Green.

She is survived by children, Rudy J. Drake enjoyed playing video games under the online handle of DeathDS13. He loved spending time with family, especially his nephew. He was very kind-hearted, easy to talk to, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Larry “Dean” Shepherd, 55, of Maysville, Missouri, left this Earth to go to his eternal home on Saturday, March 12, 2022, with his loving family at his side.&nbsp;

Dean was born in Cameron, Missouri, to Larry Clyde Shepherd and Martha (Hahn) Shepherd on August 23, 1966.

Dean married the love of his life, Angie Siebert, on February 1, 1986, at the First Baptist Church in Maysville and to this union two daughters were born.&nbsp;

Dean worked for many years at Smithfield Farms (Premium Standard Farms) as he always enjoyed working in the agricultural industry. He previously worked for Martin Plumbing and Herzog, where he and Angie got to travel and see many places during that time.

He loved to be outside, whether it be coyote hunting, deer hunting, bird hunting, fishing, snagging, or camping. He adored his bird dog, Bella.&nbsp;

Dean cherished his time with friends, family, and especially grandchildren. He spent many hours with his girls out in the yard playing softball. He enjoyed attending all their activities and watching their sporting events.&nbsp;&nbsp;He liked to play corn hole and&nbsp;&nbsp;cards and enjoyed smoking meat for friends and family.&nbsp;

He is proceeded in death by his father, Larry Clyde Shepherd.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Angie, of the home; daughters, Stephani (Ray) Wallace of Maysville and Toni (Derik) Buckles of&nbsp; Weatherby; 4 grandchildren, Hunter Buckles, Kree Buckles, Camden Wallace and Chloe Wallace; mother, Martha (Larry) Baker of Cameron; brother, Shane (Heather) Shepherd of Cameron; and numerous other friends and family.&nbsp;

Susan Lea Lewis, 78, of Kearney, MO, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2022 at St. Luke’s Plaza Hospital in Kansas City, MO. 

Susan was born October 7, 1943 in Kansas City, MO to Walter Scott Carter and Josephine Dama (Camper) Carter Evans. She received her Master’s Degree in nursing and enjoyed her career as a medical and surgical nurse. She worked at North Kansas City Hospital and was part of the team to open the St. Luke’s North Hospital campus, before ending her career in home health. Susan was a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison, KS, and was an avid gardener and beekeeper. She spent most of her life in Weston, MO before moving to Kearney in 2018. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Walter Scott Carter, Jr; Elywn Foy McLendon; and William Patrick Lewis. 

Susan is survived by her children William Scott (Michelle) Lewis of Rogers, AR, Michele (Kenneth) Moody of Liberty, MO, and Matthew (Allison) Lewis of Charlotte, NC; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sister Sheryl (Leo) Beier of Lawrence, KS; and numerous extended family and friends. 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 10 am at Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison, KS. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Church Garden at the church. Kenneth was born on August 26, 1937 in Troy, Kansas to George and Della (Murphy) Wykert.&nbsp;&nbsp;He served in the U.S. Army and was a crane operator.&nbsp;

Kenneth married Ida Rae Howland on August 23, 1964.&nbsp;&nbsp;She preceded him in death on July 19, 1992.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was also preceded by his parents, brothers; Bobbie Gene and Billy Dean Wykert.

Glen Ray Rice, 69, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2022.

He was born December 25, 1952 in St. Joseph to Lawrence and Catherine (Hernandez) Rice.

He worked at American Walnut for 10 years, then stayed home to raise his family. He also helped raise some of his nieces and nephews. Ray enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, and spending time with family and friends. Ray was into weightlifting and encouraged his children in the sport. He also liked to play the guitar and harmonica, using those talents while a worship leader at Evangelistic Temple for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lawrence “Larry” Rice, Jr.; and sister, Darlene Joy Johnson.

He is survived by children, Joanie Rice (Ted), Josh Rice (Lori), and Jason Rice; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings, Rose M. Lee (Leonard) and Angie Garner; numerous nieces and nephews.

Reona Ruth Johnson, 76, of Weston, MO passed away at her home on Wednesday, March 9,2022. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Greene, Pastor of the First Christian Church, Atchison officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, MO. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Reona was born on Oct. 13th, 1945, in Atchison, KS the daughter of Everett E. and Ruth E. (Wood) Winzer, Sr. She was raised on a family farm in Doniphan County, KS, she graduated from the Atchison High School in 1963. She was married to Theodore K. Johnson on Oct. 3rd, 1965, at the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS. Reona and Ted went on to raise three children at a farm near Rushville, MO before moving to Weston, MO in 2011. Reona loved to garden, growing wonderful vegetables and beautiful flowers throughout the years. She was a talented cook and baker, lovingly passing her knowledge to the next generation. She was an avid reader, collecting and reading thousands of books in her lifetime. She enjoyed numerous hobbies over the years and loved keeping up with her many Facebook groups and friends. Her greatest happiness came from her children, grandchildren and great grandson. She loved them unconditionally and to the fullest, always there to help when needed, always reminding them of her love. She will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include her devoted husband of 56 years, Ted Johnson, of the home in Weston, MO, two daughters Cyndi (Brandon) Hamilton, Weston, MO and Jennifer (Chris) Johnson, Liberty, MO, a brother Robert (Ollie) Winzer, Atchison, KS, eight grandchildren Tara &amp; Taylor Johnson, Kyle (Katy), Miranda, Luke, and Aiden Hamilton, and Nicolas &amp; Noah Johnson, and one great grandson Jeremiah Horvath.

Jerry Leo Stallsworth, Sr., 80, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022.

He was born May 14, 1941, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Fred and Mildred (Jones) Stallsworth.

Jerry married Nancy Lou Sanderson April 10, 1965. She preceded him in death July 8, 2003.

He previously attended The Family Worship Center. Jerry enjoyed playing cards, watching wrestling and westerns, but most of all spending time with his grandchildren. He was always willing to help someone in need.

Jerry was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gene, Richard, Jessie, Eddie; sisters, Shirley and Ruthann.

She was born January 26, 1940, in Iowa City, Iowa to Arline (Moore) Elliott.

Shirley married Bobby Lee Lyon November 1960. He preceded her in death. She was a huge Chiefs fan, avid shark fisher and loved spending time with her family. In her earlier years she enjoyed being a beautician. Shirley was also preceded in death by her mother; son, Ricki Lyon; and sister, Beverly Bottorff.

William “Bill” Foster, 79, of Troy, Kansas passed away Thursday, March 3, 2022.

Bill was born on August 21, 1942 in Severance, Kansas to Lloyd and Helen (Drake) Foster.  He was a lifelong resident of Troy.  He attended and graduated from Moray country school, Troy High School, Highland Community College, the University of Idaho (B.S. in Forestry), and the University of Chicago (M.S. in Botany).  Bill taught math and science for Troy High School, and chemistry and physics for Highland Community College.  His career started in 1967 and continued until retiring in 1997.  Bill was a kind and gentle Christian man who lived what he taught.  Some of the things he enjoyed during his active life included coaching, growing and tending walnut groves, raising cattle, teaching Sunday School, farming, running, canoeing, and taking long drives through the countryside.  Bill was an avid outdoorsman and a sports fan who cheered on the Chiefs, Royals, K-State Wildcats, and KU Jayhawks, but especially the University of Idaho Vandals. He loved the Doniphan County land where God planted him.  Bill now lives no longer alone but with his beloved Jesus.

Bill is a member of the Highland Christian Church in Highland, Kansas, Fellowship of Christian Athletes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include his brother, Stephen Foster of Moss Point, MS, 2 sisters; Marilee White of Topeka, KS, Joy Lowe of Maryville, MO, Nieces and nephews.

Robert Powell “Bob” Harris, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

On April 6, 1937 he was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to George and Betty (Schuramm) Harris. He married Linda Sue Williams on August 17, 1962. She survives of the home.

Bob served in the US Navy and Coast Guard. After retiring from the service, he worked as a mechanical engineer on river barges. He was a member of Maxwell Heights Church. He was also a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. He loved his dogs and being outside hunting and fishing. He loved model trains, antiquing and his friends at Jesse James Antique Mall.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years; children, John Harris (Jamie), Gina Young (Scott), Kyle Harris; grandchildren, Baylei Harris, Krista Young, and Katy Young.

Ed “Granny” Granville, 73, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, February 28, 2022.

He was born December 2, 1948 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky to Edward and Lillian (Nelson) Granville.

He proudly served two years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion and VFW. Ed married Jacqueline Kay Hook on March 9, 1974. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2021. He worked as a concrete finisher for George J. Shaw Construction and was a union member most of his life. Ed loved riding motorcycles, especially his Rocker C Harley-Davidson. If Ed gave you his loyalty, he held to it.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Jackie; his parents; and a sister, Marshella.

Survivors include his children, Travis Wisenski (Lilly), Jon (Sharon), Steven (Stella), and Jeffrey (Mandy) Granville; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren with one on the way; extended family members and friends.

Ed “Granny” Granville, 73, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, February 28, 2022. He was born December 2, 1948 in Harrodsburg, Kentucky to Edward and Lillian (Nelson) Granville. He proudly served two years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion and VFW. Ed married Jacqueline Kay Hook on March 9, 1974. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2021. He worked as a concrete finisher for George J. Shaw Construction and was a union member most of his life. Ed loved riding motorcycles, especially his Rocker C Harley-Davidson. If Ed gave you his loyalty, he held to it. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Jackie; his parents; and a sister, Marshella. Survivors include his children, Travis Wisenski (Lilly), Jon (Sharon), Steven (Stella), and Jeffrey (Mandy) Granville; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren with one on the way; extended family members and friends. Gregory D. James, 64, of Atchison KS died on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at the University of Kansas Medical Center following a long illness. Memorial services will be at a later date back at the family farm in Texas. The body has been cremated. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Liver Foundation or the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home who is handling the arrangements. Greg was born on July 4, 1957 in Grand Saline, Texas the son of Robert and Doris (Godwin) James. He graduated from high school in Texas and had some technical school training. W. Gerald Smith, 78, Wathena, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2022.

He was born July 1, 1943 in Comer, Georgia to Odell and Charlotte Smith. Gerald proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Shelby Jean Crook on September 17, 1964. She survives of the home. He worked as a truck broker in Gainesville, Georgia, then retired in St. Joseph, Missouri. Gerald enjoyed playing golf, watching the Georgia Bulldogs, and spending time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Doyle Smith, Jack Smith, Doug Smith, and Sara Brown.

W. Gerald Smith 1943 - 2022

Elizabeth was born June 6, 1930. She was the second child of three girls born to Carl and Marie Bechtel. She was blessed with Christian parents and accepted Jesus as her personal Savior at an early age. She grew up in Kansas City but her parents had a piece of property where she kept her pony. She loved all animals but, she especially loved horses. She also loved classical music and it was often played in her home but also in the barn so the horses could enjoy it too! She was a great musician herself and played piano, organ, and flute well. She used these abilities in the various churches she attended throughout her lifetime.

Elizabeth or Beth, as she was known to friends and family attended Bob Jones University for a year after graduating from high school. Then she went to Kansas City Junior College for a year. There she met Donna Lauchlan who arranged a blind date with her brother, Bob. That introduction led to the marriage of Bob and Beth on her birthday, June 6, 1951.

The young couple built a house in Overland Park, Kansas on a couple of acres of land and began their family of five children and a menagerie of pets and farm animals. Their children arrived in short order, Laura Ann, Linda Lou, Robert James Junior, Eric William, and Andrew Philip. They also had dogs, cats, ponies, chickens, etc. Bob worked for TWA and Beth concentrated her efforts on her home and family. She was a superb wife and mother. She went to the coat factories in Kansas City and bought leftover wool from the coats. She braided the wool rugs for her home, made the curtains, was a prolific baker and a great cook and did a wonderful job of running a household full of busy children. She had a great sense of humor in the middle of all these activities and a contagious laugh! She loved to have people in her home! She had the gift of hospitality and really enjoyed serving others. Because she was so organized, things were always neat and clean and her servant attitude attracted many visitors.

In 1976, Bob was transferred to New York City. The family had outgrown their little house on Glenwood anyway and there had already been talk of building or buying another house. Though Bob worked in NYC, they all enjoyed 12 years of living in beautiful Wilton, CT. There they also had dogs and chickens and many visitors through the years. Beth would show a personal interest in each one and again used her skills in the kitchen, at the sewing machine, and with her animals to encourage and bless others. Bob and Beth’s two oldest daughters met and married their husbands at Black Rock Congregational Church in Fairfield, CT.

In 1979, Bob was transferred back to Kansas City and in 1980 they built a New England farmhouse which Beth designed on 32 acres they bought in Platte City. There Beth realized her dream of owning her own horses! In 1983, they bought an Arabian mare in foal, Beesha, who became one of her best friends! Shana, Shala, and Sheba were also born on the farm and Beesha and Shana are buried there. Beth loved her horses and would spend hours feeding, training, grooming, and conversing with them and they returned the favor. They would always greet her with sweet nickers and whinnies when she entered the barn. Other animals lived on the farm as well from time to time. There were cows, dogs and cats, chickens, and goats. The grandchildren loved to come to the farm and enjoyed all the animals. Beth spent countless hours teaching them how to ride and groom a horse. She loved sharing her horses with the family and many friends who came on a weekly basis to have Bible studies and ride with her. Beth developed osteoporosis and suffered

a few broken bones as a result of all these activities and the horses eventually had to go. She enjoyed the horses for about 25 years and took their care very seriously.

As beautiful as she is, inside and out, Beth knew we are all sinners and need a Savior and she took the opportunity to introduce all her children and many others to Jesus Christ! One of her favorite verses was Proverbs 3:5,6. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” He did just that! She is survived by her husband, Bob, and their five children as well as 14 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

Her children thank God that she could be taken into the presence of her Savior from her home on the farm that she loved surrounded by her family! Though we miss her, we know we will see her again and are thankful for the years we had with her! She fit the Proverbs 31 model of a worthy woman. “She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: ‘Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.’ Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.”

Beth was a member of Church of the Open Door in Leavenworth, Kansas. She has many good friends there and we are thankful for the love and support they have given to the family at this time. Funeral services will be held at Church of the Open door on Saturday, March 5th at 2:00 P.M. Ethel Gladys White, age 82, was born April 28, 1939, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of Claude and Beula (Ent) Widener and passed away March 1, 2022, in Trenton, Missouri.

Ethel was a member of Amity United Methodist Church where she was very active with United Methodist Women and enjoyed being a Greeter on Sunday mornings. Ethel and “Ducky” had laying hens and a large garden they tended to and they sold farm fresh eggs and produce in the community for many years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She also traveled to many surrounding lakes where she picked up trash and aluminum cans to clean up our beautiful community.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents; Donald White; Donald “Ducky” Cochran; brothers, Gene Widner and Bill Widner; sisters, Claudine Barwald, Betty Curtis and Verlea Kretzer

Survivors include her two children; daughter, Lelila Kinion of Henrietta, OK and son Wesley (Amy) White of Trenton, MO.; four granddaughters; one grandson, and multiple great-grandchildren.

She was born September 11, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa to Richard and Ida Bell (Baker) Dick.

She held a variety of jobs throughout life, from working at Mead Paper Co., to scrub nurse at Sisters Hospital, to head baker at Jerre Anne Cafeteria, where she worked for many years. Beverly enjoyed watching Westerns and spending time with family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; two brothers; and beloved dogs, Chloe and Sammy.

She is survived by her children, Teresa Gilpin (Otto), Christine Hernandez, Michael Turner, and Ben Sharp; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Beverly Lee Emmerich 1939 - 2022

Sheila Mae (Wright) Dempsey, 76, Atchison, Kansas, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022 at her home.

She was born June 22, 1945 in Maryville, Missouri to James and Myrtle (Miller) Wright.

While working as an elevator operator in the Robidoux Hotel, Sheila met her future husband, Ronald Lloyd Dempsey, one snowy night while waiting for the city bus. Ronald and his friends pulled up and offered her a ride. She refused at first, but finally accepted. Later that evening he told his friends he was going to marry that girl, and he did – in secret — on January 27, 1962. When her father finally found out about it, he insisted on a “proper” wedding, so they got married again on February 28, 1962. 

Ronald preceded her in death on March 31, 2004.

Sheila worked at the nursing home her parents owned and operated, Wright Rest Manor, which became Citadel Health Care Pavilion. After that she was a homemaker and took care of her disabled husband and daughter. Sheila enjoyed camping, playing Keno at the casino, and crocheting. She had quite a Betty Boop collection as well. She was a Catholic.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; her father, James Wright; daughter, Lori Ann Dempsey; stepdaughter, Diane Sproat; siblings, Jim Wright, Bonnie Tomblinson, and an infant sister.

She is survived by her mother, Myrtle Wright Dynes (Bob); daughters, Nena Dempsey, Jima L. Dempsey, and Melissa Brown (Roger); grandchildren, Travis Sutton (Megan), Shawn Sutton (Laura), Tyson Quillin, Cody Sutton (Billie Jo), Bryson Quillin (Stephanie), Skyler Miller (Danielle), Natasha Sutton, and Jeremy Miller; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Deanna Hunt, Alvin Wright, and Jerry Wayne Smith; cousin, Sandy Turner; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends; and beloved pets, Zeus, Caeser, Little Man Thor, Spunky, and Peaches.

Gary G. Gilmore, 74, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022.

On April 14, 1947 he was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Derold and Ida (Williams) Gilmore.

He was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church. Gary enjoyed laughing and joking with people. He loved to travel, going to the casino, and in later years drones.

He is survived by his children, Christy Evans (Richard), Chad Gilmore, Corey Gilmore (Melissa); grandchildren; sister, Jeanette Straight (Bob); beloved dogs, Bert and Jasper; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Gary G. Gilmore, 74, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022.On April 14, 1947 he was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Derold and Ida (Williams) Gilmore. He was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church. Gary enjoyed laughing and joking with people. He loved to travel, going to the casino, and in later years drones. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his children, Christy Evans (Richard), Chad Gilmore, Corey Gilmore (Melissa); grandchildren; sister, Jeanette Straight (Bob); beloved dogs, Bert and Jasper; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
