R. Joe Howat, 72, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022.

He was born September 20, 1949 in Lexington, Nebraska to Ben and Mae (Kali) Howat. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School. Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in November 1970, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2 before separating in 1981.

He relocated to St. Joseph in December 1981 to open Valentino’s Restaurant, which he owned and operated until 1995. He then pursued various other employment opportunities, culminating in his retirement from Johnson Controls in October 2016.

Joe married Johnna Glenn on February 2, 1996. She survives of the home. Joe loved spending time with his grandchildren and playing with his beloved dog, Coco. He was a die-hard Nebraska Cornhusker football fan and loved talking to his brother, Dick, about the team for hours or until their phones went dead. He was a member of the Buchanan County Republican Club in the 1980s and 1990s. Always carrying a positive attitude, Joe never knew a stranger and could talk (or lecture his children) for hours.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Lulubelle Mae Howat and Bob Howat.

He is also survived by his children, Tobi Howat (Shanna), Rob Howat (Jeny), Jeff Howat, Marcus Howat (Noelle), Katie Felder (La’Var), Nick Howat (Erin), Emily Altobelli (Joey), Brandy Swope, and Joshua Swope; 27 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; siblings, Jim Howat (Barb) and Dick Howat (Violet); numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends; and his beloved dog, Coco.

Anderson and Henry Everett Sleeth, Sr. He worked many years as a caregiver. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, playing video games, and also loved music and reading. Martie grew up in Kansas City where she met her husband, William Shireman, and they had four children. After her husbands tragic passing, she worked very hard to give them a good life herself. She worked for the Post Office in Kansas City for many years, where she met her best friend, Leonard, before accepting a postmaster position in Maysville, MO. She retired as postmaster, but never slowed down. Her hobbies included volunteering at the Dekalb County Historical Society and the Dekalb County Senior Center, and playing cards with her friends.&nbsp;

Never in your life will there be someone who could love, forgive, care, or help more than Martie Shireman. She was the center of her grandkids world. Everyone who called her Grammy, a name she picked out for herself, knew she could do no wrong. She was the best at tricking the kids into telling her what they got her for presents. She had the best jokes and loved to laugh until she cried. She was a proud grandma and loved to show off her family. She made sure her family had everything they ever needed, no matter what. She always answered her phone, day or night, for her loved ones. She showed up to everything. Ball games, cheer competitions, graduations, baby showers, birthdays, holidays, it didn't matter, she was always there. She was a phone call that made everything better. She made sure she was a soft place to land. She loved her friends and her family with her whole heart and with our whole hearts she will be missed. She was surrounded with love past the very moment she slipped away.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Marietta Lucille Chase, husband William Shireman, her sister Margaret Willhite, her sons Keith Shireman, Donald Shireman, and Jimmy Shireman, and her daughter Linda Shireman.&nbsp;

She is survived by her best friend Leonard Little, her grandchildren Samatha (Bruce) Britz, William Shireman, Amy Shireman, Crystal Shireman, Benjamin (Kodi) Shireman. Great grandchildren Courtney, Christopher, Lillian, Madison, Violet, Zaria, Gabrielle, and Zoë.&nbsp;

Linda Harris, 78, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, March 28, 2022.

On September 24, 1943 she was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Jack and Laura (Cowhick) Williams.

Linda married Robert “Bob” Powell Harris on August 17, 1962. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage. She was a member of Maxwell Heights Presbyterian Church. Linda will be remembered as the most loving mother. She was a devoted homemaker and worked at MWSU in housekeeping. Linda loved her dogs, antiquing, the Sparks Flea Market, and her friends at Jesse James Antique Mall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Larry Williams.

She is survived by her children, John Harris (Jamie), Gina Young (Scott), Kyle Harris; grandchildren, Baylei Harris, Krista Young, and Katy Young.

Terry Ray Morris 1957 - 2022

Todd Richard Bertels, 56, of Topeka, Kan., formerly of Nortonville, Kan., died Thursday, March 24, at Midland Care Hospice in Topeka. Todd was born Nov. 13, 1965, in Winchester, Kan., the son of Richard and Ann (Rosdahl) Bertels of Nortonville. He lived in the family home in Nortonville until he was 6 years old. He became a resident of Kansas Neurological Institute, where he benefited from the dedication and compassion of the staff for over 50 years. Todd is survived by his parents, brothers Kevin (Jenny) of Oak Grove, Minn., Terry (Alice) of Topeka, Mark (Elizabeth) of Overland Park, Kan., sister Angee Noll (Ed) of Winchester, Kan., brother Aaron (Mattie) of Rapid City, S.D., 12 nieces and nephews, eight great-nieces and great-nephews, and many caring aunts and uncles. The Bertels family sends heartfelt gratitude to the skilled professionals at KNI who became Todd's second family, to the doctors, nurses and staff who tended to him on the seventh floor at the University of Kansas Health Center St. Francis Campus, and to the team at Midland Care Hospice.

Todd is survived by his parents, brothers Kevin (Jenny) of Oak Grove, Minn., Terry (Alice) of Topeka, Mark (Elizabeth) of Overland Park, Kan., sister Angee Noll (Ed) of Winchester, Kan., brother Aaron (Mattie) of Rapid City, S.D., 12 nieces and nephews, eight great-nieces and great-nephews, and many caring aunts and uncles. Joan enjoyed playing music on the accordion, piano and organ, embroidery, watching her great grandchildren play ball and attending to her little animals. Mary Belle was born on April 14, 1927 in Perry, Oklahoma to John and Florence (Law) Hull.&nbsp;&nbsp;She lived her adult life in Troy.&nbsp;

Mary Belle is a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Wathena, Kansas and the LWML.&nbsp;

She married Leonard Gaul on March 8, 1952 at the Christ Lutheran Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;He preceded her in death on January 29, 1992.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mary Belle was also preceded by her parents and her brothers, Hillman Hull, Thomas Hull, J.R. Hull, Dean Hull and a sister, Ruth Hull.&nbsp;

He was an over the road truck driver but mainly was a hairdresser.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Word Of Life Church in St. Joseph, Missouri&nbsp;

Henry married Valerie Edwards on Thanksgiving Day in 1982. She survives of the home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

Betty Ruth Fondren McCool Cortner, 90, died at home near Maysville, Missouri, with family, on February 20, 2022. She was born in Columbus, Mississippi, to Durrell Fondren and Hortense Mosley. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Donald Fondren.

Betty grew up mostly in Columbus, and in Florence and Mobile, Alabama. Her father was a general contractor. Her mother had several courageous bouts with tuberculosis and, consequently, the family spent several stays at a sanatorium. Betty graduated from Columbus High School and attended Mississippi State College for Women. She met and married George W. McCool, then stationed at Columbus Air Force Base. They were stationed at several outposts, and Betty

Catherine (Cathy) McCool was born in Alexandria, Louisiana. After George’s stint in the service, the family moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where George Walter (Walt) McCool was born. After George graduated from the University of Iowa, the family moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where they welcomed Victor Waite (Vic) McCool. In Lawrence, Betty led an active life of entertaining, restoring antiques, upholstering furniture, sewing, decorating, learning new crafts, gardening, cooking, being a room mother, and her first love - caring for her family.

In 1969, the family moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where the kids went to high school and college, and Betty worked in numerous social groups while continuing her love of crafts and antiques. She held regional executive positions with the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society. She held the first Walk-A-Thon in St. Joseph, MO for the March of Dimes.

Betty and George divorced in the late 1970s. Afterward, she met a new partner, William C. (Bill) Cortner. After a few years in St. Joseph, Betty and Bill moved to a beautiful farm outside of Maysville, Missouri, where they built a house and a life, and where they lived until her death. Betty was a beautiful and talented person. She never shrank from a challenge. There seemed to be nothing she couldn’t do. She attended writing conferences around the US and wrote a novel based on her mother’s life. She was always a pillar of love, support, and reassurance. Her warm and gentle nature won her many devoted friends, and her remarkable strength and courage helped her survive adversity and illness in her final years.

Betty had three children by her marriage to George W. McCool: Betty Catherine McCool (husband Dave Lawellen) of Monument, Colorado; George W. (Walt) McCool of Dallas, Texas; and Victor W. McCool (wife Marie) of Wentzville, Missouri.

Her husband, William Chester Cortner, of Maysville survives her, as do her three children, and grandchildren Tucker Scoles, Andie McCool, Alex McCool, and step-grandchildren Connor Hardesty and Hayden Hardesty. Also grieving her loss are Bill’s three daughters, Gina Hupka, Julie Hansen, and Janelle Cortner Freed and their families, numerous members of the Fondren family in Columbus, and many, many dear friends. She will be missed beyond words. The family is grateful to Comfort Care Hospice of Cameron, Missouri; Pastor Mike and Carol Wolf and the congregation at Hopewell Baptist Church of Weatherby, Missouri, for care and comfort during her last days.

Services will be held 4/30/2022 at Hopewell Baptist Church at 2550 NE Gospel Rd Weatherby, MO 64497. A visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m., the service at noon, and a light lunch and gathering will follow in the Church.

Linda was born on July 3, 1957 in Troy, Kansas to Alvin O. and Esther (Losson) Kostman.

She worked as an LPN and was an amazing seamstress, working from her own home.

George Michael Soffa III, 71, of St. Joseph, Missouri, unexpectedly passed away on March 15, 2022, after fighting numerous medical issues. George was born on July 5th, 1950, the third of eleven children to parents Beulah and George Soffa Jr. in Pueblo, Colorado.

George was predeceased by his parents Beulah and George Soffa Jr. and brother Dennis Soffa. 

He is survived by his siblings Elizabeth (Soffa) Costello, Marilyn (Soffa) Clay, Dave Soffa, Selina (Soffa) Soderlind, Anita (Soffa) Leach, Lanita (Soffa) Davis, Patty (Soffa) Schroeder, Will Soffa and John Soffa.

George forever will be remembered by his family and friends as Ozzie, his childhood nickname. Starting from a young age George built and painted model cars. As a young man George worked by his father’s side and learned to be a mechanic. Like his father and Uncle Jim Rikhoff, he became an expert in the mechanics of modern and vintage cars. At one time he was known for building the fastest car in Pueblo. Through various mentors, he honed those skills into his various love of the Arts that would become his legacy. He mastered carpentry and became a very successful Architectural Restoration Consultant and Contractor. He had an extensive, creative imagination for design and could materialize his design with ease and beauty. He was a “Jack of All Trades”. You could ask him how to repair or build anything and he would complete the job for you, or walk you through step by step, answering any questions you might have.

During his time in California, he had built several high-end restaurants in places like Sunset Boulevard and Rodeo Drive. He also befriended some high-profile celebrities, by doing work in their recording studios and theaters. His love of history and books became a driving factor in his collecting antiques and his love of art. George was a world traveler and especially enjoyed exploring his Slavic heritage. One of the best aspects of his personality was his love for the “liberal side of politics and his disdain for all things conservative”. Frequently kicked off social media for expressing his opinions, stubbornly he never backed down.

George will leave a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends who were fortunate to listen to his stories on family lineage, his adventures on traveling the world, old cars he had owned and restored, first edition books, antiques, places he had built and remodeled, and famous people he had meet and worked for. As the oldest son, George was a caring, loving brother to all his siblings, as well as his extended family. Always a great communicator, George frequently was in contact with his cousins, family, and friends.

In his day, George loved to ski. He’s probably standing at the top of a Colorado peak waiting to tackle a new ski run.

At one time he was known for building the fastest car in Pueblo. Through various mentors, he honed those skills into his various love of the Arts that would become his legacy. He mastered carpentry and became a very successful Architectural Restoration Consultant and Contractor. He had an extensive, creative imagination for design and could materialize his design with ease and beauty. He was a “Jack of All Trades”. You could ask him how to repair or build anything and he would complete the job for you, or walk you through step by step, answering any questions you might have. During his time in California, he had built several high-end restaurants in places like Sunset Boulevard and Rodeo Drive. He also befriended some high-profile celebrities, by doing work in their recording studios and theaters. His love of history and books became a driving factor in his collecting antiques and his love of art. George was a world traveler and especially enjoyed exploring his Slavic heritage. One of the best aspects of his personality was his love for the “liberal side of politics and his disdain for all things conservative”. Frequently kicked off social media for expressing his opinions, stubbornly he never backed down. George will leave a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends who were fortunate to listen to his stories on family lineage, his adventures on traveling the world, old cars he had owned and restored, first edition books, antiques, places he had built and remodeled, and famous people he had meet and worked for. As the oldest son, George was a caring, loving brother to all his siblings, as well as his extended family. Always a great communicator, George frequently was in contact with his cousins, family, and friends. In his day, George loved to ski. He’s probably standing at the top of a Colorado peak waiting to tackle a new ski run. We Love You George (Ozzie)! We will forever miss you! George Michael Soffa, III 1950 - 2022

Gary D. Hall, 81, was called home by his Lord and Savior on March 15, 2022, at Mosaic Hospital in St. Joseph.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born March 16, 1940 in Maddock, ND, the son of Einar and Edna (Pederson) Hall.

Gary graduated from Fargo Central High School, class of 1958. Following graduation, he attended the University of North Dakota before joining the Air Force.&nbsp;&nbsp;He served four years total; stationed in San Antonio, TX for a year and then splitting remaining time in Germany and at the Pentagon.&nbsp;&nbsp;While serving in the military, Gary was a team member of a group who wrote the first program to allow Airmen to transfer from one station&nbsp;assignment to another without a bulky packet of orders.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the Air Force, Gary spent his career in Information Technology as a computer&nbsp;programmer; working in a variety of industries including banking, education, and the medical field.

In 1987, he met and married the love of his life, Jean (Stahl) Hall.&nbsp;&nbsp;They celebrated 34 years of marriage this past November.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gary loved spending time with his family.&nbsp;&nbsp;He loved road trips with his family and especially the beach and island vacations.&nbsp;&nbsp;He enjoyed bowling, golf, playing softball and in later years, fishing with his son and grandsons.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was passionate about watching sports of all kinds; including years of cheering on grandchildren and nieces and nephews who played soccer, baseball, football and basketball.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was a huge fan of NDSU football, KU basketball, Royals baseball and was especially thrilled to see his Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by three brothers, John, Steven, and Lannis Hall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gary is survived by his wife, Jeannie, a brother Ron Hall (KC), two children Shelly (Ogi) Mayer (Warren) of Columbia, MO and Scott (Dawn) Ogi of Sugar Hill, GA; 10 grandchildren, Nate (Hannah) Herndon, Mary Elizabeth (Joshua) Palmer, Claire Herndon, Eli Mayer, Jacob (Kate) Ogi, Katelyn (Myles) Wells, Madison Ogi, Tyler Strittmatter, Joseph Ogi, and Lilian Ogi; 4 great-grandchildren, Avery Herndon, Murphy Herndon, Maryn Ogi and Eliza Ogi; an abundance of brother and sister-in-laws, and a host of nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

A visitation time will be from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 followed by a Celebration of Life at the First Baptist Church in Maysville, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;A private graveside ceremony for immediate family will be at a later date.

Christopher John Godar, was born on January 29, 1982. On Sunday,

Jameson Kenneth Sweeney, 3, passed away unexpectedly on March 17, 2022. He was born June 8, 2018 to Michael and Kandus (Clizer) Sweeney. 

Jameson loved playing in the dirt, working with his dad and family on the farm, snuggling with his mom, and playing with his big brother Jaxson. His blankie was a constant companion. His eyes twinkled every time he smiled. His giggle was infectious. He was excited to turn four, but most importantly to turn a whole hand (5). Jameson had dance moves he loved to show. He loved to sit on a lap and read his favorite books. He loved a good costume. But above all, he had the kindest, sweetest, most genuine heart – he loved to love.

Jameson was a proud pre-schooler at St. Francis Xavier School.

He will be loved forever by his mom and dad, Michael and Kandus Sweeney, beloved big brother Jaxson; grandparents, Kim and Janice Clizer and Joe and Linda Sweeney; aunts, uncles and cousins – Kyle, Katelynne, Chase and Judson Clizer and Bill, Laura, Devlin and Patrick McCarthy; great-grandparents, Bobby and Linda Wilson; many other friends and family.

Shirley Mae Patterson, 85, Lone Jack, Missouri, formerly of Amazonia, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

She was born May 27, 1936 in Amazonia to Marvin and Berniece (Steeby) Brown. Shirley married Pat Patterson and he preceded her in death. She was a farmer most of her life.

Shirley enjoyed going to tractor pulls and loved to plant flowers. Her home was the hub of family gatherings where they enjoyed her good cooking, especially her oyster dressing. Shirley was a member of the Savannah VFW.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and granddaughter, Greican Davidson.

She is survived by children, Bill Davidson (Angie), Deborah Barr (Jimmy), Charles Davidson, Mark Davidson (Janet), Kenneth Davidson, Linda Rodgers, Brenda Davidson, Richard Davidson, Emmett Davidson, Randy Davidson, Jeffrey Davidson (Eva), and Dallas Davidson (Kim); 25 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Knorr (Charles); numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was born May 22, 1930 in St. Joseph to Robert and Georgia (Lytle) Beattie. She was raised in Elwood, Kansas, by her foster parents, Ethel Beattie Young and Howden Malone Young. She graduated from Bartlett High School in St. Joseph.

She married Marion William “Big Pete” Thompkins on December 1, 1950. He preceded her in death on October 20, 1993.

Mary worked at Hirsch Brothers, then at Sisters Hospital, and then in housekeeping at the Missouri State Highway Patrol for 34 years before retiring in 1992. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Elwood, where she was an usher. Mary loved to cook, and loved her family and friends, who were also family in her eyes. She took very good care of her sons.

The family would like to thank everyone for their love and care of Mary. She was preceded in death by her parents; foster parents; and siblings, Charlie Martin, Junior Martin, Diane Martin, Cargene Sheffield, and Rosie Briscoe.

Mary M. "Snooky" Thompkins 1930 - 2022

Known to most as “Manley”, Joe Manley Tillison was born to Mildred (Beal) Tillison and John Dean “JD” Tillison on April 11,1939 at home in the Arbuckle Mountains above Turner Falls Park near Davis, Oklahoma. 

During his childhood, he lived at Turner Falls where his family built vacation cabins, ran the gate and the concession stand for the City Park. He met his wife, Geraldine “Jeri” Tillison when he was 18 while she was visiting the Falls. They moved to Jacksonville, FL then to St. Joseph, Missouri. In 1970, the Tillison family moved to Camp Woodland in Albany, Missouri when Manley became the Superintendent of Properties for the Midland Empire Girl Scout Council through his retirement in 2004.

Manley was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Juanita Faye (Tillison) Newman,son Joe Michael, and wife Jeri. 

He left a legacy of love for and is survived by his children and their spouses: Jeff Sprague and Julia Hollars, Kathy (Sprague) Morgan and Terry Morgan, Karen (Conrad) Willoughby and Tim Willoughby; Lyanne “Lee” (Tillison) Langerock and Keith Langerock; grandchildren- Shawn Sprague, Chad Sprague, Vincent Crowley Jr., Melissa Newman, Paula Newman, Ivy (Baker) Reger, Micah Baker, Melanie (Morgan) Fish, and Tara (Morgan) Dodge as well as their spouses, beloved great grandchildren, a great-great grandchild, brother-in-law Haden Newman, nephews and nieces.

Manley studied carpentry at an early age, first as an apprentice rock mason for his father then as a vocation. Along with carpentry, Manley was a rodeo wrangler and worked for Armour’s Meatpacking plant in St Joseph prior to the Albany move. He still practiced construction throughout his career including improvements at Camp Woodland, restoration at the Rigney Theater, and with Keith and Lee’s manufacturing company in the 1990’s.

Along with his work at Camp Woodland, for a number of years he co-owned the Camp horseback riding program with his daughter Kat. In the 80’s and 90’s he was known as “Smokin Joe” as Manley and Jeri owned Smokin Joe’s BBQ known throughout Northwest Missouri and Southern Iowa for their BBQ Sauce, pulled pork, ribs, and smoked chicken. Manley graduated in 1976 from Missouri Western State University with a degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry.

Manley’s hobbies were fishing, history, pondering, and politics (local). Manley served for over 40 years as an elected public servant to the community in several capacities including on the Rural Water District, Athens Township Board, and the Albany City Council. Always interested in bettering the community, Manley contributed to the formation of the Albany Fire Protection District and improvements at Gentry County Memorial Hospital and Carnegie Library.

Manley led by example. He was a smart, quiet, thoughtful, observant, humble person who was slow to anger, compassionate and caring, and who always shared an engaging smile. He approached life with practical wisdom and a quick sense of humor that is cherished and will be missed.

John “Wolfman” Kretzer, 64, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

He was born June 20, 1957, in Pensacola, Florida to Emerson and Nadine (Waymire) Kretzer. He just celebrated 22 years of sobriety, thank you to his AA family for their support over the years. John enjoyed playing baseball, golfing, softball, and bowling. He had a love for music and ran Full Moon Productions. John was declared cancer free one month ago, and the family wishes to thank all his caregivers.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Dean Kretzer; father; and brother, Michael Joseph Kretzer.

He is survived by daughters, Amanda Barry (Jon), Angie Wirth (Chris Lake); his wolf, Warf; grandchildren, Harlee, Chipper, Dryden, Tayden; mother, Nadine Kretzer; siblings, Marie Hoyt (Ron), Gail Smith, Emerson A. Kretzer, IV (Denise), David Kretzer, Margaret Wells, Timothy Kretzer (Karrie), Karl Kretzer (Regina); numerous nieces and nephews.

Judith A. “Judy” (Wood) Sandy, 78 of Atchison, Kansas died on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at her home with her loving family by her side. Graveside services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, March 21st, 2022, at the Doniphan Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Atchison Humane Society or the Doniphan County Pet Rescue and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com Judy was born on July 22, 1943, in Atchison, KS the daughter of Woodrow W. and Dorothy (Grable) Wood. She graduated from Troy High School in 1961, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Washburn University and her Master Social Worker/ Master Addiction Counselor from the University of Kansas.

Judy was a founder and primary therapist for the New Freedom Counseling Center, Atchison, KS, she was a counselor/director for the Northeast Kansas Community Action Program from 1984-1987. She served her counseling internship for the United States Disciplinary Barracks 1983-1984 as caseworker. Judy served as the Coordinator of the International Fellowship from 1974-1980 helping foreign exchange students. She attended the Troy Methodist Church, and enjoyed animals, culture, people, nature, environment, and solar energy. She also was an avid Kansas University Basketball Fan and enjoyed watching the Waltons television program. Judy was married to Larry D. Sandy on March 16, 1962, in Atchison, KS. He survives of the home.

Additional survivors include a daughter Laralee D. (Ron) Shelton, Atchison, KS, ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law Susie Sandy, Atchison, KS and Sharon Wood, Bendena, KS and nine international foreign exchange students. Her parents, a son Jeff Sandy, a brother Wayne Wood, brother-in-law Garry Sandy, and two grandsons Aaron Shelton and Sean Sandy preceded her in death. Her favorite saying “ If you have the choice of being right or being kind, always choose kind."

Carol B. Hester,74, Kansas City, Kansas, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2022.

She was born August 3, 1947 to LeRoy and Mary Ann (Cook) Ezzell and spent her early life in St. Joseph, Missouri, graduating from Benton High School as a National Honors Society member her Sophomore through Senior years. Carol married Duke Hester on June 9, 1985 and again on June 9, 1991.

For most of her professional career, she worked in sales and marketing in the life insurance industry. While she loved her Lord and Savior above all, the highlights of her retirement years were being a grandma and traveling with Duke. Carol embraced the adversity of her own trials, seeking opportunities to serve others.

She served as a Stephen Minister providing one-to-one support for people going through difficult times. Confronting a serious illness, she became involved with Turning Point, a cancer patient support and advocacy group. She subsequently became involved with Family Reach, an organization focused on alleviating the financial burdens of treatment.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Duke; children, Michele Gough (Andy), Jay Fontanini (Marissa), Teri Majors (Matt), and Amy Minor (Phil); grandchildren, Mason and Sawyer Gough; Adriana, John and Victoria Fontanini, Emma and Isabella Majors, brothers, Rick Ezzell (Mya) and Glenn Ezzell (Melody); sister, Jennie Ezzell Janeway (Jeff); Jeremy, Jason, Brandon, and Melissa and numerous other nieces and nephews.
