Helen Louise Thurlow, age 88, of Clay Center died March 18, 2023, at 
the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS. She was born on March 
26, 1934, to Julius and Lillian (Franklin) Bullock in Troy, KS.&nbsp; 

Helen 
grew up in Bendena, KS and graduated from Bendena High School in 1952. 
She married William Thurlow on April 12, 1953. They made their home in 
Bendena until 1967 when they moved to Clay Center. William preceded her 
in death on January 4, 2021. 

Helen was a homemaker who loved and cared 
for all of her family.&nbsp; During her life she also worked various jobs 
outside the home. She enjoyed gardening, canning and was an amazing 
cook. Most of all she loved to quilt and iron. Helen was a member of the
 First Lutheran (Swedesburg) Church. 

Helen was preceded in death by her 
husband, her parents; one sister, Wilma Ann Thorne and a granddaughter, 
Jennifer Horn.

Fred Schott, 71, St. Joseph, Missouri; passed away Sunday, March 19, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Fred was born on September 15, 1951 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to the late Francis X., Sr. and Helen Virginia (Rice) Schott. He was a graduate of Christian Brothers High School, Missouri Western State University and The Athenaeum of Ohio.

Mr. Schott spent his career in non-profit, working in client outreach for Audiology with a Heart. He was a former Christian Brother and priest for the Diocese of Covington, Kentucky.

Fred was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the St. Joseph Community Chorus. He composed liturgical music and was active in outreach for the poor and education of the deaf.

Mr. Schott is survived by lifetime friend, Tom Wilcoxson; two brothers, Frank (Bobbie) Schott and Dick (Pam) Schott; cousin, Margaret Dreesmann; friend, John Evans and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Schott has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Celebration of Life 10:30 AM Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Christ Episcopal Church.

Carl V. Cenci, 93, passed away on March 15, 2023 at home in St. Joseph, Missouri. Carl was born on December 12, 1929 in Kansas City to Salvatore and Andreina Cenci. 

He retired after many years as owner of Midland Art Statuary in Kansas City. Carl enjoyed exploring his Italian heritage, making several trips to Italy, and throughout his life was dedicated in his efforts to learn about and maintain healthy lifestyles. 

Carl was predeceased by his parents, brother Peter Cenci and sister Caroline Kingcade. 

He is survived by his niece Marta Murphy, and nephews Michael Cenci and Rick Kingcade, and seven grand nieces and nephews.

Sharon Kay (Cotton) Derr of Kansas City, Missouri passed away&nbsp;March 17, 2023 at the age of 80.

Sharon was born&nbsp;April 26, 1942 to George ‘Russ’ and Helen (Kee) Cotton of Oregon, Missouri. Sharon graduated from Oregon High School in 1960. She married her school sweetheart, Jerry Derr, on&nbsp;November 12, 1961. Jerry and Sharon had two children: Melanie (John) Stuckenschneider of GA and Jason (Janene) Derr of MO. Sharon had four grandchildren, Jordan (GA), Alyssa (MO), Austin (MO), and Katie (GA). Before marrying Jerry, Sharon worked at a doctors office in St. Joseph, Missouri. Jerry and Sharon moved for job opportunities in Independence, Missouri, Newton, Kansas, and then back to Kansas City in 1973. After a time of being a mother and housewife, Sharon spent most of her working career at retail stores, including Venture and Montgomery Ward, then had a small clientele where she and Jerry cleaned houses for a few years. Sharon‘s last job was with the North Kansas City School District in food service where she retired after five years. Sharon loved old TV shows, games, word search puzzles and visiting with family, friends, neighbors, and strangers. She enjoyed events and gatherings with her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. She had the gift of gab on the phone and appreciated sharing her stories and tales with all that would listen. She liked reading about history and discussing historical events. &nbsp;She kept up with the Kansas City Chiefs, the KC Royals, Dancing with the Stars, and the British Royalty events. Sharon was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Derr, her parents Russ and Helen Cotton, and her brother Larry Cotton. She also felt heartache over the years, with the loss of her mother-in-law, Wilma Derr, and father-in-law, Henry Derr; close brother-in-laws Max Field, Robert Derr, and LeRoyce Derr; close sister-in-laws, Betty Field, Madeline Derr, and Donna Cotton; and many other beloved members within her extended Cotton, Kee, and Derr family. Survivors include her immediate family along with many cousins, extended cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and sister-in-laws Helen Derr and Marlys Field. The family would like to thank the friends and family that would help check in on Sharon since losing Jerry, her husband of 43 years, in 2005. Sharon was able to remain in the home they shared together until her passing. It meant a lot to us knowing that she could have simple phone conversations, send and receive cards or letters in the mail, because she would find such joy in that each day.

Lavern "Vernie" Salisbury, 58, St. Joseph, Missouri; passed away Saturday, March 18, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Vernie was born on November 15, 1964 to the late Lawrence and Pauline (Hess) Sowards in St. Joseph, Missouri; of where she was a lifelong resident and attended Central High School.

Vernie was owner and operator of M &amp;M Battery Recycling for over fifteen year. Prior to that she was a manager for Marcus's Bar and Grill.&nbsp;

Vernie was president of the Women's Dart League in St. Joseph. She enjoyed playing darts with her friends, loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed reading and riding motorcycles.

Vernie married Marc Salisbury on December 15, 1982 and celebrated forty years of marriage. He survives of the home.

Additional survivors include children, Marc, Jr. of the home; John (Ryan) Salisbury, Paula Salisbury and Jenny (John) O'Callaghan, all of St. Joseph; granchildren, Cara, Julie, John, Dalton, Ryder, Jensen, Avery, Riddick and Rilyn; great-grandchildren, Michael and Greyson; three sisters, Deborah Wiedmaier, Linda Williams, Delores King and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Vernie was preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Dean.

He graduated from Troy High School in 1961, and then attended Missouri Western and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He served in the United States Army and had the rank of Sergeant. He married Marsha Eylar on June 4, 1965, and she preceded him in death on March 8, 2023. He built his own airplane and received several awards such as the Workmanships Award and also the Wright Brother Award. He was a member of the Missouri Pilots Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association of Oshkosh, WI. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, workshop and flying. Survivors of Richard are brother-in-law; Edward (Janice) Eylar, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife and sister, Rosalee Adkins, and brother-in-law Art Adkins. Funeral services will be held 2:00PM, Wednesday March 22, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Troy, Kansas with Rev. Dennis Jennings officiating the service. Jackie S. Vestal, 81, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

He was born August 18, 1941 to Harold “Jack” Eugene and Dora Frances Vestal in Unionville, Missouri.

He graduated from Putnam County High School.

He married Mari-Lea McFee on May 17, 1969.

Jackie was a firearm enthusiast who’s love of hunting began as a young boy. He shared this love with his children and grandchildren. He was known to bring home wild animals, a few to mention were baby racoons, turtles, and squirrels. He loved his bird dogs, horses and mules. His dream was to have a farm so his family could experience the things he loved. He enjoyed watching his family have those experiences. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were everything to him. He always had a positive attitude, and he was the life of every party. You never saw him without a smile on his face.

He began working in asphalt when he was 18 years old and did not retire until he was 74 years old. He is a legend in the asphalt world. His employees loved working for him and a lot of them say, “he was the best boss they ever had”.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mari-Lea; parents, Jack and Frances; brother, Keith Vestal.

Survivors include his daughter and her children, Pam (Andy), Wyatt and Maddison Blevins; daughter and her children, Robin (Chris), Ashley and Tara Crawford; son and his children, Robert, Jacilynne and Jacey Vestal; daughter and her children, Patricia, Josh (Makayla) and Justin Brown; great-grandchildren, William and Olivia Krause, Jameson, Dawson, and Cayson Brown.

Ervin Elmer Jobe, 90, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023. Death to this life is his entrance into eternal life’s heavenly mansion. He was born September 26, 1932 in Blue Earth County, Minnesota the son of William Henry Jobe and Marie O (Tonn) Jobe both of Germany.

Ervin was preceded in death by wife, Shirley Carol Ervin July, 23,2022 and his parents and all of his siblings, Alvin, Marvin, Evelyn, Merlin, Eldor, Waldo and Willard.

Roger L. Bozarth 66, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023 at a Wathena, KS health care facility. He was born March 10, 1957 in St. Joseph, son of Virginia and Ernest Bozarth. 

 graduated from Benton High School, class of 1976. He enjoyed fishing and helping others. He was an excellent caretaker for his mother. Roger was a member of the Church of Brethren. 

He was preceded in death by father, Ernest Bozarth. 

Survivors include: mother, Virginia L. Bozarth, aunt, Venita Dye, and cousin, Gary (Lori) Dye, all of St. Joseph.

Arthur Bradford, 74 of Lansing, KS passed away Friday, March 17, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Rose Hill, VA on March 3, 1949 to Arthur and Linda (Brock) Bradford.

On Sept 1, 1972 he married his sweetheart, Marty (Miller) Bradford.&nbsp; She survives at the home. Art is also survived by his four children, twin daughters Dee (Troy) Hohensinner, Debbie (Mike) Hickman, and two sons, W. Bradford and Michael (Kristie) Bradford, all of Leavenworth.&nbsp; Eight grandchildren, Cody (Amanda) Bradford, CJ (Ariane) Jamerson, Shelby Bradford, Breana (Lee) Hickman-Carter, Austin Hickman, Christian Bradford, Noah Hohensinner, and Ethan Hohensinner, nine great-grandchildren and two sisters, Ida Hammersley, Fleta Agee and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Art was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

After serving his country for 20 years in the US Army and living all over the world he began his career with Munson Army Hospital and made a home in Lansing KS. Art was a loving family man who enjoyed having them all together. He loved fishing, hunting, Chiefs football, and playing with model trains with his grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10-11am on Wednesday March 22, 2023 at Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth KS. His funeral will follow at 11am at the chapel. Burial will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery at 12:30 with military honors.

Helen Dorsey Pate, 77, of Weston, MO, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at the North Care Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. Helen was born December 27, 1945, in Weston to John Elmer and Helen C. (Brown) Hall. 

She was a lifelong resident of Weston and spent most of her working life as a waitress for Fannie’s Restaurant in Platte City, MO. Helen also spent many years as a volunteer for United Services of Platte County. She loved gardening, and working with her plants and flowers. Helen was also a dog lover, and had many pet dogs throughout the years. She enjoyed sewing, and made various clothes and pillows; and was of the Baptist Faith. 

She was preceded in death by her parents. 

Helen is survived by her children John E. (Kris) Harmer, Marie (Larry) Munsterman, Renee (Bobby) Sartain, Letha (Juan) Salas, John C. Pate, Jr., Regina (James) Smith, and Lorrena (Chris Morales) Pate; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. 

A visitation will be held 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 20, 2023; followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral service, at Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Weston.

She was survived by her daughter, Machelle Skinner, son in law, Lance Skinner; and her son Doug (Beth) Langley. Grandchildren Rachel Mears and Tracer Mears, Drew Skinner, Marissa Langley, and Sarah Langley, and her great granddaughter Elsie Machelle Mears.

Gerry started attending the Living Church of God in 2011 after a Tomorrow’s World Presentation presented by Mr. Roderick C. Meredith in Gladstone, Missouri. She was baptized on April 12, 2019.

She loved gardening, traveling, visiting with family and friends and serving God to the best of her ability.

Gordon Slater, 75, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

He was born November 13, 1947 on a farm in Holdrege, Nebraska. He was on the football, basketball and track teams in high school, where he was given the nickname “Shotty.” He was a dual graduate of Eustis High School and Elwood High School, both in Nebraska.

Gordon married Lillian Urban on October 17, 2006. She survives of the home.

He was a visionary in the world of computer programming and software. He worked for Fort Hays State University in the computer department, then started his own software company, AnnRay, in 1977. In 2002, he started ATCi, which developed emergency management mapping software.

Gordon enjoyed reading, especially history. A man with an ornery sense of humor, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Tim Slater.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian; children, Shawn Slater (Lesli), Troy Slater (Julee), Tiffani Spicer (Matt), and Brett Slater; grandchildren, Ashten, Kaylee, Luke, Ethan, Stephen, Drew, Ryan, and Bennett; brothers, Dr. Dick Slater (Judy) and Ron Slater; numerous extended family members and friends.

Charles David Perkins 1939 - 2023

Kansas City, Missouri…Darrel Wayne Starling was born April 10, 1949, and on March 9, 2023, he left the arms of those who loved him and ran into the loving arms of Jesus.

He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the eldest son of Norman E. and Dorothy V. (Ballard) Starling.

After graduation from Oak Park High School in 1967, he joined the United States Air Force and served his country as an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist from 1968 through 1972 reaching the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Starling served as Crew Chief at Whiteman AFB in Missouri, Tinker AFB in Oklahoma and Andersen AFB in Guam, where he always volunteered for the next adventure to leave the island, and so he had many adventures.

After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Darrel worked as a Service Manager for car dealerships including: Bob Moore Cadillac in Oklahoma City, Charlie Fisher Buick-Chevrolet in Kansas City, and Jim Gilmore Cadillac in Kalamazoo, Michigan, who was sponsor and partner with A.J. Foyt, four-time Indy 500 winner.&nbsp;&nbsp;Darrel attended the races many times.

Darrel loved working on cars (especially corvettes), woodworking, and going to junk stores all over the country with Barbara by his side. He loved finding things broken and making them like new again.&nbsp;&nbsp;Where others saw junk, he saw a treasure.&nbsp;&nbsp;He could fix anything!&nbsp;&nbsp;He will be dearly missed by those who love him.

Darrel is preceded in death by his mother and father; two infant daughters, Kari Sue Starling and Michelle Starling; and his brother, Michael E. Starling.

Survivors include his partner in life, Barbara K. Owen; niece, Deanna Starling Ludwig; and brother, Robert C. Starling; and many other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Darrel’s life will be held on his birthday, Monday, April 10th, 2023, at Turner Family Funeral Home in Maysville, Missouri, starting at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service.

(Ballard) Starling.After graduation from Oak Park High School in 1967, he joined the United States Air Force and served his country as an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist from 1968 through 1972 reaching the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Starling served as Crew Chief at Whiteman AFB in Missouri, Tinker AFB in Oklahoma and Andersen AFB in Guam, where he always volunteered for the next adventure to leave the island, and so he had many adventures.After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Darrel worked as a Service Manager for car dealerships including: Bob Moore Cadillac in Oklahoma City, Charlie Fisher Buick-Chevrolet in Kansas City, and Jim Gilmore Cadillac in Kalamazoo, Michigan, who was sponsor and partner with A.J. Foyt, four-time Indy 500 winner.&nbsp;&nbsp;Darrel attended the races many times.Darrel loved working on cars (especially corvettes), woodworking, and going to junk stores all over the country with Barbara by his side. He loved finding things broken and making them like new again.&nbsp;&nbsp;Where others saw junk, he saw a treasure.&nbsp;&nbsp;He could fix anything!&nbsp;&nbsp;He will be dearly missed by those who love him.Darrel is preceded in death by his mother and father; two infant daughters, Kari Sue Starling and Michelle Starling; and his brother, Michael E. Starling.Survivors include his partner in life, Barbara K. Owen; niece, Deanna Starling Ludwig; and brother, Robert C. Starling; and many other relatives and friends.A celebration of Darrel’s life will be held on his birthday, Monday, April 10th, 2023, at Turner Family Funeral Home in Maysville, Missouri, starting at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service.<figure>

Aliene Harris, 98, of Grayson, MO passed away Wednesday March 15, 2023.

She was born on May 10, 1924, to Allen and Lula Harris in the Paradise, MO area where she grew up in graduated from Smithville High School.

 Aliene was preceded in death by her husbands Freddie Miller, Roy Duncan, and Leo Harris; sisters Lillian Taylor, Mary Peck and Daisy Moore; and her brothers Roscoe, Clifford, Jasper “Jap”, Wylie, Donald and Henry Harris.

She is survived by her daughter Joyce Transmeier and husband Joe; step granddaughters Jacqueline Transmeier and Cheri (Scott) Collins; three great-grandsons Dalton, Sean, and Isaiah; brother-in-law Lewis Moore, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.&nbsp;

Marie Therese Rice 80, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023 in St. Joseph, MO. She was born February 18, 1943 in Tomah, WI, daughter of the late Margaret and Ormey Youngs. 

She was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, gardening and taking care of her family. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

Marie was preceded in death by parents, husband, Timothy James Rice, Sr., brothers, John and Leo Youngs.

Survivors include sons, Timothy Rice, Jr. and Thaddeus (Tammy) Rice both of St. Joseph, MO, 6 grandchildren, Trevor, Lena, Chris, Tamara, T.J., Katie, and 16 great grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 20, 2023, at 10:00 am at the St. James Catholic Church, Father Joseph Totton celebrant. The family will receive friends from 3-5:00 pm, and the rosary will be recited at 5:00 pm, Sunday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery following.

Loretta Mae Augustine 87, of St Joseph, MO, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care surrounded by her family. She was born July 19, 1935 in Atchison, KS, daughter of the late Martha and Kenneth Plummer. 

She attended Central High School. She married Albert Augustine on December 31, 1954. Loretta spent many years as a Mother and taking care of the home. She later worked as Secretary for several area businesses and was a long time Avon Representative. Loretta loved reading and writing, especially romance novels. She enjoyed music, specifically Bluegrass and sewing. She was a wonderful cook. Loretta was a member of the Three Angels 7th Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed her time as a member of the Sunshine Gospel Singers and the Midwestern County Music Association, having served as Past President. 

Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Albert Augustine in 2001, infant sister, Bernice Plummer, sister, Glenna Goodman and brother, Kenneth "Sonny" Plummer. 

Survivors include children, Patricia Augustine of Trenton, MO, Naomi Augustine (James Martin) of St. Joseph, Anthony (Lisa) Augustine of Kearney, MO, sisters, Myrtle Campbell of St. Joseph and Lillian (Ralph) Wilson of Branson, MO, brother, John (Debbie) Plummer of St. Joseph, grandchildren, Curtis Tyler, Sabrina Harbord, Tanya Augustine, Melissa Holaday and Olivia Augustine, her dear friend, Betty White, 8 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Louella Mae Bollman, 76, of St Joseph, MO passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at her home. She was born February 3, 1947 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Ethel and Clarence Russell. 

She spent many years working for the YMCA in Child Care. She enjoyed spending time with her children, drawing and artwork and her frequent shopping trips to Wal-Mart. Mostly, she enjoyed spending her time with the Lord and reading the Bible. Louella was a member of the Evangelistic Temple. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, sons, Larry Ferguson, Jr. and Randall Ferguson, infant daughter, Sara Ferguson and brother, Delbert Russell. 

Survivors include her children, Melinda (John) Humphrey of Excelsior Springs, MO, Paul Ferguson of Independence, MO, Kevin Bollman of St. Joseph, brother, Clarence (Carol) Russell Jr. of St. Joseph, sister, Lucy Combs of St. Joseph, 15 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Ms. Bollman has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2023 at The Evangelistic Temple. Brother Ron Nichols, officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Ashland Cemetery.

Pamela Sue O'Callaghan, 71, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Monday, March 13, 2023 at a local health care facility. She was born November 5, 1951 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Dorothy and William McGlothlin. 

She graduated from Benton High School, class of 1970 and Park College. She worked as a Counselor at Western Regional Diagnostics Correctional Center. Pam enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She loved her nieces and nephews. 

Pam was preceded in death by husband, Hubert "Chiney" O'Callaghan in January 2023, her parents and brother-in-law, David Angle. 

Survivors include siblings, Kathleen Angle of Claremore, OK, Shirley (Larry) Fuson of St. Joseph, Gerald (Susan) McGlothlin of Rio Rancho, NM, Michael (Michelle) McGlothlin of St. Joseph and Jeanne (Ted) Talbott of St. Joseph, step-daughter, Candy Kalamon of St. Joseph, 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Ms. O'Callaghan has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home.&nbsp;A Joint Inurnment with her late husband Chiney will be at the Leavenworth National Cemetery at a later date.
