Dr. Merlin D. Brown, 78, St. Joseph, Missouri, entered the kingdom of heaven Saturday, February 19, 2022.

On August 25, 1943 he was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to Wilma and Emery Ryther.

He married Marcia Ann Layland on October 20, 1962. She survives of the home. Merlin was a life-long member of Turning Point Church of the Nazarene. His family lovingly recalls how his life was guided by three tenants: his faith, his family and his patients.

Dr. Brown was a highly regarded, board certified family medicine physician. Mosaic named him Physician of the Year twice. His commitment to his patients and the health and well-being of his community was evidenced throughout his 40 year career. He genuinely loved his work. His calling was caring for people as a physician and a servant of God. Some might say he was the last of “his kind” of physician making house calls and giving out his personal number and praying for patients in the most difficult times of life.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years; children, Laura Elder (Eric) and Robert Brown (Jami); grandchildren, Greggory, Blake, Austin, Zachary, Briana; great-grandchildren, Sophia, and Gabriel; sister, Norma Scroggins; extended family, colleagues, and friends.

Margie Cleo Paradise, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 18, 2022.

She was born September 6, 1929 in Chariton, Missouri to Wilber and Ilene (Burton) Sharp. She spent the majority of her life in St. Joseph and graduated from Lafayette High School.

She married Charles James Paradise on May 29, 1948. He preceded her in death on September 25, 1984.

In her younger years, Margie babysat many of the neighborhood children.

In her 92 years, Margie touched many people’s lives with love and joy who will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Charles; her parents; grandson, Michael James Paradise; two sisters, Thelma McDaniels and Dixie Sill; brother, Bud Sharp; and nephew, Gary Green. She is survived by her children, Danny Paradise (Teryan), Mike Paradise (Cathy), and Terry Paradise (Vicky Davis); five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five nephews and one niece.

Carolyn S. Zeit, 78, of Shawnee, KS, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, February 21, 2022. 

 Carolyn was born August 30, 1943 in Weston, MO to Walter and Anne (Murdock) Oliver.  She was a 1962 graduate of Atchison County High School, Atchison, KS.  Carolyn married William Joseph Zeit in 1967 in Atchison; and after his passing, she worked many jobs to support her kids, and especially enjoyed working as a Lab Technician at Hennessy Research for the last 20 years. 

 Family was of the greatest importance to Carolyn. She loved spending time with her siblings, kids, and grandkids. Carolyn had a zest for life, enjoying her trinkets, rugs, the casinos, travelling, and anything “raspberry”.  She had a love for animals and helped many that were in need of care. 

 Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William Joseph; and son Randall.  She lives on through her children Chris, Clark, and Lee Ann (Michael); her grandkids Liz, Gabby, Eli, and Isabella; 3 sisters; and a brother.

  Carolyn’s gentle soul and amazing personality blessed her with many lifelong friends.   Following cremation, a visitation will be held 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2022; followed by a 2:00 p.m. memorial service at Vaughn Funeral Home in Weston, MO.

Phyllis Louise Edwards, 87, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at her home. 

Phyllis was born February 16, 1935 in Worth County, MO to Ivan and Lela (Strain) Vollnogel. 

She graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, MO in 1953 and married James A. "Big Ed" Edwards on March 23, 1953 in Iowa. She was of the Baptist faith as a member of Nashua Baptist Church in KC, MO, and was a past WMU member in Tracy, MO. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and reading. Phyllis was a Sunday School Teacher and also led the singing worship. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter Faith Smith; sister Thelma Davis; and brothers James Earl and Charles Vollnogel. 

Phyllis is survived by her children James D. (Marla) Edwards of KC, MO, Janice (Clayton) With of Lee’s Summit, MO, John Edwards of Brookfield, MO, Rose (Randy) Redenbaugh of KC, MO, David (Mary) Edwards of North Platte, NE, Lela (David) Harper of Gladstone, MO, Sarah (David) Farmer of Leavenworth, KS, and Gaylene Smith of Omaha, NE; 25 grandchildren; 50 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; sister Helen Fern (Bob) Sims of Blairstown, MO; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, extended family.

&nbsp; Michael “Shaky” Daniels, 70, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, February 18, 2022.

He was born May 1, 1951 in St. Joseph to George and Mary (Brown) Daniels. Michael was a 1970 graduate of Central High School. Michael married Okie Lee Vandever on May 1, 2009. She survives of the home.

Michael was a very hard worker who loved anything with wheels. His jobs included driving a taxi, his own semi, a dump truck, and a Redi-Mix concrete truck. Michael loved motorcycles and was a member of the Freedom of the Road Riders. He enjoyed going to bike rallies and car shows. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, and going camping with his family. He loved to sing karaoke, especially country songs by Johnny Cash – even wearing a black trench coat and black cowboy hat. His go-to song, however, was “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by George Jones.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Nakai; siblings, Cathy Edwards, David Daniels, and Dennis Daniels; uncles, Dennis, Charlie and Sonny Brown; and his beloved dog, Sissy, who joined Michael in Heaven on February 18.

He is survived by wife, Okie; children, Michele and Mark Daniels; stepson, Terry Nelson; grandchildren, Chelsea, Sage, and Tristan Sansonetti; siblings, Steven Ray Daniels (Cheryl), and Verna Lyon; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Survivors include a son Bob and Joyce Williams, Atchison, KS, a daughter Jaquetta Peak, Huron, KS, five grandchildren, Douglas Peak, Vonda and Merrell Young, Daniel Peak, Rob and Kristy Williams and Julie Pennington, nine great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren and two step great great grandchildren. Bill enjoyed fishing and going to the casino, but his passion was collecting coins, always looking to find rare coins. Bill was a caring and giving individual. As an organ donor, Bill gave the gift of himself so others might benefit from his donation. William Joseph "Bill" Smith 1948 - 2022

&nbsp; John A. King, Sr., 87, Stewartsville, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022.

He was born January 18, 1935 in St. Louis, Missouri to John and Octavia (Meyrose) King. John graduated from McBride High School in St. Louis. John married Carol Jensen on February 17, 1956. They shared almost 66 years together. She survives of the home. He was a pharmaceutical salesman for Wyeth Laboratories for many years.

John enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking. He made wood cut-outs for holidays, with Carol helping with the painting.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Sr. John Regis and Glenn Meyrose.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, John A. &nbsp; John A. King, Sr., 87, Stewartsville, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022. He was born January 18, 1935 in St. Louis, Missouri to John and Octavia (Meyrose) King. John graduated from McBride High School in St. Louis. John married Carol Jensen on February 17, 1956. They shared almost 66 years together. She survives of the home. He was a pharmaceutical salesman for Wyeth Laboratories for many years. John enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking. He made wood cut-outs for holidays, with Carol helping with the painting. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Sr. John Regis and Glenn Meyrose. He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, John A. &nbsp; William E. “Bill” Purvis, 95, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2022. On September 17, 1926 he was born in Marion, Indiana to Espie G. and Louisiana (Sexton) Purvis. He moved to Missouri at age 12 and grew up on a tobacco farm near Weston. Bill joined the US Navy at the age of 17 in 1943. After basic training in California, he went to Okinawa for 9 months on the USS Leedstown. He was discharged in May 1945. Upon his return home, he married Alice Pope on June 22, 1946. She preceded him in death after 65 years of marriage in 2011. Bill was an auctioneer since 1946. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Charity #331; Moila Temple Knights Templar; Mitchell Chapter 14 Ram; Past President and Governor of Downtown Sertoma; and a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church. His genuine love for people was evidenced by his years of service within his community.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Steve Purvis; sister, Helen Wharton; and brother, Elmer Purvis.

Bill is survived by daughter, Virginia L. Deeken (Dave) of Heber City, Utah; grandson, Todd Deeken (Catherine) and great-grandson, Bodie of Park City, Utah; granddaughter, Aimee Deeken of London, England; nieces, nephews, and extended family.

&nbsp; Barbara Ann (Corless) Gregory, 87, of Agency, Missouri, went to be with the Lord on February 14, Valentine’s Day, 2022, at a local hospital. She was born February 6, 1935, in Saint Joseph, to Matthew and Lorene (Rogers) Corless. Barbara attended Saint Patrick School and the Convent of the Sacred Heart. She then attended business school and worked in the payroll department at Westab. Barbara married Joseph L. Gregory on September 5, 1955. She was raised a city girl but embraced the challenge of moving to the country with the love of her life. They made their home on the family farm, first near Gower, then near Agency. Together they raised seven children in their sixty-six years of marriage. She spent her life in sacrificial service to her family and local Christian ministries including the Valley Community Center Food Kitchen and St. Joseph Christian School.

Barbara enjoyed going on trips and spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren. These were some of her most precious times and fond memories. She enjoyed fellowship and Bible study with her group of friends that met every Friday. She loved to read and tend to her flowers.

Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents; sisters, Jean Curtin (Norman), Ruth Jacobs (John), and Doris Corless; daughter-in-law, Katy Gregory; son-in-law, Rick Rhoads; and sister-in-law, Sr. Evelyn Gregory, O.S.B.

Born April 17, 1953 in Independence, MO as the first of three children, Kim was the son of Donald and Marilyn (Bryan) Hays. He met Edith (Edie) Lynne Madden in March of 1976 and immediately told his friends that he was going to marry her. They were married at St. Patrick’s Church on June 11, 1977 and were married for 44 years.  They had 3 children and 7 grandchildren. Kim was an outdoorsman who loved traveling, camping, hiking, sailing, rock climbing, and cycling. When at home he enjoyed watching the Royals and Chiefs games, working with his hands, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. 

He was a man of many hobbies. He worked for General Motors in Fairfax, KS for 38 years and was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Weston, MO. He was involved with the Boy Scouts as a scout leader for Weston Troop 249 for several years during which he most enjoyed accompanying them on a trip to Philmont. He was a unit commissioner for the North Star District of the Heart of America Council. He was an honorary warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. 

Kim is survived by his wife, Edie Hays; mother, Marilyn Hays; 2 sisters, Joy (Bill) Whitlow, Ronda (Tom Stone) Wood; 3 children, Nicholas (Ashley) Hays of Kansas City, Jessie (James) Carothers of Platte City, and Shannon (Deidre) Ashley of Kansas City; 7 grandchildren, Ava, Peyton, and Madden Cook, Elizabeth and James “Mack” Carothers, Serenity and Terek Hays; and many other loving relatives. He is preceded in death by his father Donald Hays.  A visitation will be held 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Weston, MO. &nbsp; Donald G. Smith, 75, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, February 11, 2022 surrounded by his beloved wife and two children. He was born January 16, 1947, in Orange, Texas to Dalco and Ima (Gage) Smith. While serving his country in the United States Air Force, he met and married Lenora (Kathy) Scarpinatto on May 17, 1969. He held her heart and hand for over 52 years.

Donald had a long and successful career that spanned over 30 years in the oil industry. He enjoyed carpentry work, traveling, and genealogy. He was a proud grandfather who loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching them play sports and achieve new things. Donald was a believer and follower of Christ and was an active member of Ashland United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and identical twin brother, Ronald Smith. Surviving family includes his beloved wife, Kathy; children, Bryan (Haruka) Smith and Amy (Brady) Dubois; five grandchildren, Akimori and Harumi Smith, Grant, Laurel and Ella Dubois; three siblings, Larry Smith, Shirley Fort, and Gary Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Donald’s final resting place will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Farewell services and a celebration of this deeply loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend will be held at Ashland United Methodist Church on Friday, February 18, 2022 at 4:30pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; Robert G. Nold, 92, Savannah, Missouri, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 12, 2022, at the family farm where he was born and raised. He was born June 11, 1929 in Savannah, Missouri to Louis and Cecilia (Klonowski) Nold, Sr.

Robert proudly served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He married Lillian Anna Johns on June 5, 1952 at Camp Polk, Louisiana while he was serving his country. She survives of the home. After the service, he returned to the family farm, which earned Century Farm status in 2019. He operated a dairy at the farm from 1953 to 1985, when his sons took it over. They ran the dairy until 2018. Robert also owned and operated Nold Tiling Service.

Robert enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, gardening, growing flowers, and traveling with Lillian to Branson and overseas. He loved to play dominoes with his grandchildren. He was the oldest member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Savannah, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Leoda Justice, Dorothea Nilges, Louis Paul Nold, Jr., Pat Nold, Evelyn Mello, and Julia Silletto.

He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Lillian; children, Lillie Musick (Greg), Lawrence, Kansas, Mike Nold (Joyce) Savannah, Missouri, Jean Nold, Savannah, Missouri, Jim Nold (life partner, Jayne Simerly), Savannah, Missouri, Bonnie Lance (Bob), Fillmore, Missouri, Marilyn Lance (Ron), Fillmore, Missouri, and Sandy Pittman (Garry Dean), St. Joseph, Missouri; 16 grandchildren; one step-grandson; 28 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; brother, Norman Nold (Patsy), Savannah, Missouri; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

&nbsp; Betty J. Jacobs, 84, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, February 11, 2022. She was born December 13, 1937, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Joseph and Frances (Murphy) Jacobs. Betty married William D.L. Jacobs October 23, 1958. He preceded her in death.

She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Cathedral Church. She retired from Heartland Medical Center in 2006. Betty enjoyed collecting “Betty Boop” memorabilia and McDonalds Happy Meal toys. She loved spending time with her family and teasing her grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Vicky Shipp; parents; sisters, Ernestine Stuck, Marjorie Jacobs, Helen Medley; brothers, John, Charles, and Francis “Bunny” Jacobs.

&nbsp; Otto Frederick Sonnenmoser, 71, of Rushville, MO died due to an accidental drowning on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022, at the Jamesport Community Lake while fishing. A visitation with family will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, February 15th, 2022, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body has been cremated. &nbsp; Dennis J. McBride, 75, of Valley Falls, KS, passed away on Sunday, February 6th, 2022, with family by his side, after suffering a long battle of cancer and heart failure. A visitation with family will be from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Sat. April 2, 2022, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body has been cremated according to his wishes. He attended Washington Grade School and graduated from Atchison High School in 1965 and went on to attend Emporia State University. Dennis married (Sarah) Enid Creager, his high school sweetheart, on September 22, 1966. Together, they had two children Angela Dawn and Jeff Michael. Dennis worked for Kansas Power and Light Company as a lineman, for 34 years. He retired in 2002. Even as he battled heart failure and aggressive cancer, he continued to stay active, and he never complained. He would say “Oh, I’m pretty good.” Dennis loved sports, especially the Jayhawks and was a sport enthusiast. He enjoyed working outside and fishing. But his greatest love was his family. He and Enid celebrated 55 years of marriage in Sept. 2021. His three grandchildren were his heart, and they had a very close relationship with their Papa. He was so fortunate to be with all of them at Christmas. As Dennis was in the hospital, the last two weeks of his life, his humor, and wit continued to shine, and he never complained. Dennis is survived by his wife, Enid, his daughter Angela, (Mark) Leggio, Indianapolis, IN. Three grandchildren; Alec (Amanda) Leggio, Bloomington, IN, Avery (Bennett) Dillon, Bloomington, IN, and Andersen (Jacob) Lindley, Indianapolis, IN. Five great grandchildren, Addyson and Ashton Leggio Beckett Dillon, Jackson and Blayke Lindley. &nbsp; Lawrence (Larry) Richard Kline, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 10, 2022. He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on May 13, 1935 to Wilber Forrest and Garnet Audrey (Vess) Kline. Larry married Terry Fern Holmes on March 1, 1958 who survives of the home.

He graduated from Benton High School in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1953. He also attended St. Joseph Community College. Larry was an engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 42 years. Prior to that, he graduated from Barber college and worked as a barber at Chuck’s Barber Shop in St. Joseph. Larry attended McCarthy Baptist Church. He was a member of the Locomotive Engineers Organization and the National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees. He enjoyed gardening, raising fruits and vegetables and blessing many family and friends with the produce. He also enjoyed traveling, cooking, telling jokes and stories.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wilber Lewis Kline; sisters, Josephine Reece, Diana DeVault, and Vada Doyle. He is survived by his wife; sons, Mark Kline (Janet) of Cameron, Missouri and Keith Kline (Jennifer) of Osborn, Missouri; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Cremation under the direction of Meierhoffer Funeral Home &amp; Crematory.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She retired from Mead after 25 years then later volunteered at the Food Pantry and Youth Center in Ivy Bend, Missouri. Sonja enjoyed getting her nails done, garage sales, bowling, playing pool and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Ralph Vickers, Jr., David Dowell; great-grandson, Johnny L. Nattier; parents; and brother, Jack Shafer. Marion was a member of the First Christian Church where she was very involved in the choir and helping with events and funeral dinners, a tireless volunteer in the life of the church. Marion was an avid sports watcher, especially for the K-State Wildcats, KC Royals and Chiefs. Marion married Delbert “Dub” Ehret on June 6, 1950; he preceded her in death on November 14, 2019. Survivors include a son Martin and Leslie Ehret, Wichita, KS, Sara Laurie, Atchison, KS, Nancy and Timothy Beattie, Olathe, KS, a brother John and Phyllis Martin Deephaven, MN, grandchildren, Beth Galley, Paul Ehret, Megan Day, Bree Ederer, Lindsay Thomas, Whitney Ehret, Brooke Genail, Allison Laurie, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She worked as a receptionist for Radke Orthodontist and was a bookkeeper for George Diebolt’s, and Mary Carol Garrity at Nell Hills, along with a helper at the Atchison YMCA. Marion was a member of the First Christian Church where she was very involved in the choir and helping with events and funeral dinners, a tireless volunteer in the life of the church. Marion was an avid sports watcher, especially for the K-State Wildcats, KC Royals and Chiefs. Marion married Delbert “Dub” Ehret on June 6, 1950; he preceded her in death on November 14, 2019. Survivors include a son Martin and Leslie Ehret, Wichita, KS, Sara Laurie, Atchison, KS, Nancy and Timothy Beattie, Olathe, KS, a brother John and Phyllis Martin Deephaven, MN, grandchildren, Beth Galley, Paul Ehret, Megan Day, Bree Ederer, Lindsay Thomas, Whitney Ehret, Brooke Genail, Allison Laurie, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was also preceded by her parents, a daughter, Deborah Ehret-Reyes and a sister, Marjorie Wheeler.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>
