Zelma LaRue (Staggs) Cook, 84, of Dearborn, MO passed away, June 27, 2023.

She was born on September 1, 1938 to Wallace Paul and Alda Price (Gowen) Staggs in St. Joseph, MO. She was a 1956 graduate of North Platte High School. She then attended Gard’s Business College which prepared her for various office skills.

Zelma was employed by Cook Paint and Varnish Company in North Kansas City in the Accounting Department, Dannen Mills in St. Joseph, and St. Joseph Tent and Awning Company. Zelma worked for M&amp;M Hearing Aid Company in Kansas City, managing several hearing aid fitters at age 25. She was co-owner of Cook Hearing Aid, Inc (1976) and Hearing Aid Center of St. Joseph (1994) where she worked for 39 ½ years as well as designing two new office buildings for the company.

On Easter Sunday April 21, 1957 Zelma and Bill were united in marriage at the Dearborn Christian Church by Brother Robert Beaman and were blessed with 64 years together. Their only daughter, Annette, was a joy for them. They lived in Dearborn where they made their home. Her husband, Bill, passed away, February 13, 2022.She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Robert Wayne Cook on September 2, 1964; her parents; and step-mother, Alma Meyer Staggs in 2008.

Zelma accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at the Dearborn Christian Church and was baptized by Brother Floyd B. Taylor, of St. Joseph on December 2, 1951. She taught the primary Sunday School class, served as Sunday School Treasurer, on several committees, and was Deaconess and became an Elder on April 16, 1989.Zelma enjoyed keeping their home, gardening, canning, her rose garden, preparing home cooked meals for family and washing her car by hand in addition to her office duties. She had a joyful time baking with Lydia.

Zelma is survived by her faithful, loving, and caring daughter, Dr. Annette LaJean Burris and husband Bob; dearly loved granddaughter, Lydia and husband Sam; great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Staggs and wife Colleen; a niece and nephew, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 2nd with visitation one hour prior to the service at Dearborn Christian Church.

Vernon United Methodist Church, Wichita KS, and enjoyed travel &amp; camping with a Camping Club. She also enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing, playing golf and billiards. She moved to Atchison when she was 101 years old.

Survivors include two nieces including Alice Murray, Atchison, KS, Winnie Weber of Beloit, KS., a daughter-in-law, Cathy Wuu, Wichita, KS, and two step grandchildren, Patrick, and Chris. Her parents, a brother George Patterson, and three sisters, Reba Kadel, Anace Fulton, and Florence Thomas, nieces Agnes Leahy, Janice Hallaq and Francis Oetting also preceded her in death.

Daryl returned from service to work as the publisher for the Atchison Daily Globe, then the Leavenworth Times, back to the Atchison Globe and then the Northwest Arkansas Times, the Americas Times Recorder and the Cordele Times. He was a former member of Kiwanis and Rotary Club, he had also raised cattle, was a 4-H Leader and enjoyed gardening, watching the Kansas City Chiefs, and spending time with his children and family. He was married to Linda Mae Kasten in August 1961. They were later divorced. He was married to Mary Louise Bridges on February 14, 1995. She survives at home. Additional survivors include two sons, Steve (Debbie Lewis) Henning, and Scott (Kiley Young) Henning both of Atchison, KS, two daughters, Stacy Henning and Anita Henning, both of Atchison, KS, sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. His parents, a sister, Darlene Steele, a granddaughter, Alexis Boldridge, and great grandson, Waylon Messinger preceded him in death.

Ashley May Clark, 32, of St Joseph, MO passed away &nbsp;Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. She was born July 6, 1990 in St. Joseph, daughter of Laura and Timmy Clark. 

She attended Lafayette High School. Ashley loved spending time with her children. She was a goofy, fun loving mom and a cool aunt. 

Ashley was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Georgia Lou DMoss. 

Survivors include her parents, her boyfriend, Jonathan Hockaday of St. Joseph her children, Dalton Clark, Dakota Clark, Destiny Clark, Nevaeh Hockaday, Colton Hockaday, Kimberly Hockaday and Jonathan Hockaday, brother, Adam Clark, sister, Amber (Cameron) Clark, maternal grandmother, Loretta Bosch, 2 nieces and 2 nephews, all of St. Joseph.

Bertha Sue McLaury 66, of Saint Joseph, MO passed away  Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at a local health care center. She was born September 30, 1956 in St. Joseph, daughter of Louise and Raymond McLaury. 

She graduated from Benton High School. Bertha worked at Stetson Hats for 25 years. Her hobbies included sewing, doing crafts, knitting, baking, working puzzles and reading, especially romance novels. 

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents. 

Survivors include daughters, Kimberlie McLaury and Angela McLaury of St. Joseph, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

John Richard "Dick" Pierce, 89, of Hamilton, MO passed away Monday, June 26, 2023 at his home in Hamilton, MO. He was born August 18, 1933 in Portland, OR, son of Gwendolyn Pierce. 

He attended the Columbia Academy in Battle Ground, WA. Dick married Shirley Mitts Carter on January 20, 1978 in Vancouver, WA. Dick spent many years working as a Welder for various off shore drilling rigs. Later Dick and Shirley co-owned the Heights Tavern in Vancouver. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge. Dick loved playing with trains and was a member of the Las Vegas Garden Railway Society. 

His other hobbies included golfing, playing the accordion and guitar. He enjoyed bluegrass and country music and was an avid football fan, especially Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos and KC Chiefs. 

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Rick and Mike Pierce and brother, Alan Pierce. 

Survivors include wife, Shirley Pierce of the home, his children, Vickie (Dave) Gaines of Black Canyon, AZ, Kevin (Rhonda) Pierce of Vancouver, WA, step-children, Michael (Gale) Carter of Hamilton, MO, Leslie &nbsp;Carter of Longview, WA, Bill (Carrie) Carter of Basehor, KS and Debbie (Robert) Carlson of Pensacola, FL, brother, Larry (JoLynn) Pierce of Grand Junction, CO, sister-in-law, Pam Pierce of Brinnon, WA, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Bettie Jean “Jeanie” (Hundley) Miner, age 92, of Atchison, Kansas, died June 24, 2023, at a care facility in Overland Park, KS. She was born on May 20, 1931, in Atchison, the daughter of Bryant Henry Hundley and Ruby Myrtle (Tull) Hundley. She attended Washington, Sunnyside and Franklin grade schools before graduating from Atchison High School in 1949. She continued her education at Vo-Tech for secretarial training.

Jeanie was most importantly a mother and grandmother. She was a Brownie Scout Leader while raising her children. She managed the Mode O’day, was employed at the Wagon Wheel, and was a custodian at Rockwell, St. Benedict’s College and USD 409 until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the Carol Baptist Church where her and Richard “Dick” Van Wey, were married; they later divorced. She married Gary Martin; they divorced and she married Larry Miner; they divorced. She enjoyed the time she shared with, Bob Barnes, until his passing. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning and preparing large meals for family gatherings, celebrating holidays, staying fashionable by wearing and collecting jewelry, working on word searches but most of all she loved her family; she showed her love the best she could through her actions. She maintained her devotion to God privately and loved reading the bible.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children, Claudia Jo Payne, Horton, KS; Dorothy Jean (Bill) Mercer, Polo, MO; Robert Harold “Bobby” (Cheryl) Van Wey, Atchison, KS; Danette Ruby (Francis) Brownfield, Polo, MO; Dennis Franklin (Ala) Van Wey, Lees Summit, MO; Garie Jean (Scot) Martin Brownrigg, Welda, KS; a brother, Harold L. (Susan) Hundley, St. Joseph, MO; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren and nineteen great-great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Preceding her in death include her parents; grandchildren, Cinnamon Payne Odonnell, Shana Van Wey, Dennis Andrew Skeen, Traci Lynn Smith; brothers, Henry, Earl “Buster”, Jim and Charlie Bill; sisters, Delia Burge, Dorothy Ola Wilburn and Ruby Cox; and son-in-law, Ray Payne.

Denise "Dee" Schroeder passed away on June 26, 2023, in her hometown of St. Joseph, Missouri. Born on February 21, 1961, Dee lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to her family and work.

Dee was a hardworking individual, who spent 23 years as a restaurant manager for McDonald's, and a total of 31 years in the restaurant industry.

She was a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan, and she never missed a game. She had a fondness for tie-dye, Mickey Mouse, music, and the color red. She was also an animal lover, and she had a special place in her heart for dogs. Dee's love for Diet Pepsi was well-known among her friends and family, and she could often be seen with one in her hand.

Dee loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment she spent with them.

Dee was preceded in death by her father, Wilbur Smith, and her grandmother, Esther Courtney.

Mark A. Higgins, a loving and generous man, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2023, at the age of 73. Born on September 4, 1949, in Palmer, TN, Mark was known for his friendly nature and his willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Mark is survived by his wife, Judy A. Stratton-Higgins, whom he married on July 3, 2010. He is also survived by his children, Christina and Ricky Higgins; stepdaughter, Laura Miller (Derek); grandchildren, Lisa and Luis; great-granddaughter, Jana; siblings, Phylis Petro, Robert "Phillip" Higgins (Yaunna), and Susan Vienhage (Thomas); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Robert L. Higgins and Lillie B. Higgins-Bish; grandchild, Denise; and siblings, David Higgins, Janice Gillam, and Larry Higgins.

Mark proudly served in the United States Army as an engineer, where he specialized in building bridges and demolition. His time in the military allowed him to develop a strong work ethic and a deep sense of patriotism, which he carried with him throughout his life.

In his free time, Mark enjoyed hunting and metal detecting, often sharing his finds with friends and family. He was also a skilled carpenter, using his talents to do remodeling. Mark's love for travel took him to many places, but he especially enjoyed visiting Germany to spend time with his grandchildren.

Mark will be remembered for his loving and generous spirit, as well as his friendly demeanor. He touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Roy Dean Travis, 89, formerly of Mound City, Missouri, passed away at the age of 89 surrounded by his family on October 30, 2022, in Westminster, Colorado.

Dean was born on March 21, 1933, to Roy and Rosetta (Combs) Travis in Mound City. He was the youngest of eleven children. Dean spent his younger years attending Mound City schools where he was a standout athlete.&nbsp;This was also where he met his sweetheart, Sue Forney. Dean and Sue wed in 1951 and were married for 66 years before her death in 2018.

Dean spent two years in the US Army before attending Northwest Missouri State University, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education.

Dean's natural athletic ability and love of sports directed his career path. He was hired by the Lamar School District in 1959 as the first full time elementary school physical education teacher. He held that position for 34 years. Dean implemented the annual Little Olympics and Flag Football Playdays. Dean's early influence inspired many Lamar students on the path to successful athletic careers.

After retirement, Dean and Sue moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. They enjoyed many years of travel to numerous countries, spending summers at their cabin in Guffey, Colorado, and staying active in the First Christian Church of Scottsdale.

In addition to his wife, Sue, Dean was preceded in death by their infant son, Scott; granddaughter, Katie Coulter; brother-in-law, Phil Forney; nine sisters and one brother.

Dean is survived by three daughters, Kerri (Mike) Coulter, Sherri (Jim) Fleetwood, and Nikki (Warren) Brown; son, Tim Travis; and sister-in-law, Mary Frances Forney. Dean shared his love with six grandchildren, Travis (Bryan) Coulter, Casey (Diana) Coulter, Kirk (Lanie) Goslee, Shandi (Brian) Tippett, Kyle Even and Matthew (Danielle) Even; 11 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandsons.&nbsp;

Dean's wry wit and sarcastic barbs will be missed by those who knew and loved him. If Dean referred to you as a "Dingbat", consider yourself among his favorites.

William Leroy “Bill” Young, 83, of Gladstone, MO passed away June 26, 2023.

He was born on June 7, 1940, to William Robert and Marion Young in Bethany, MO. Bill grew up in North Kansas City and graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1958.

On June 12, 1965, he was united in marriage to Alice Thornton. After their marriage they lived in Gladstone, MO where they made their home. Alice passed away on September 27, 2021.&nbsp;

Bill worked as a real estate agent with his wife Alice for over 35 years in the Kansas City area. He loved spending the holidays being Santa Clause for the children for several different organizations in the area. Bill was an avid OU Sooners football fan and loved his grandkids.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Bill and Alice spent most of their life in the Nazarene Church and were involved in the Layman League and Marriage Enrichment Ministry.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Young; his parents Bill and Marion Young; his brother Timothy Young; and his sister Victoria Albin.

Bill is survived by his son, Jeff Young and wife Amy; grandchildren Campbell, True, and Brody; Goddaughter Angela Davis and husband Mark; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. with Funeral Services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1st at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Smithville.

Dolores Montemayor Hayward passed away on June 24, 2023, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the same city where she was born on October 28, 1943. Dolores was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt who touched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, and zest for life.

Dolores graduated from LeBlond High School in St. Joseph, and later worked for Sherwood Medical for many years. She was an avid swimmer and enjoyed cooking meals for her family. Dolores loved to spend time with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She could often be found at the Flying Pig Tattoo, decorating her skin with the beautiful artistry of her tattoo artist and friend, Chris Berry.

Dolores touched the lives of all that knew her, and her presence will be greatly missed by those who loved her.

Patricia Ann Brost, 76, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023.

She was born February 5, 1947 in Maryville, Missouri to Raymond and Mary Alice (Helzer) Evans. She graduated from South Nodaway High School in 1965, then earned her bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 1970 and her master’s degree from the University of Missouri.

A schoolteacher for 49 years, Patsy started her career teaching English at Nodaway Holt, then spent 30 years at Mid-Buchanan teaching Language Arts and French. She went on to teach French at Maur Hill Mount Academy in Atchison, Kansas, and later taught French at Savannah High School and composition at Missouri Western State University. She was a member of the Prairie Lands Writers Group.

Patsy touched the lives of many and never lost her enthusiasm for teaching. She loved keeping up with and remembering her former students.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Brost; her parents, Mary Alice Helzer Boyer, Raymond Evans and stepfather, Gilbert Boyer, who loved and raised her; siblings, Carolyn Wells, Connie Jean Evans, Judith McKain, and Michael Evans; and sister-in-law, Marcia Evans.

Brewster Benson Snyder was peacefully embraced by the arms of God, while surrounded by several&nbsp;family members, in Valrico, Florida on Saturday, June 24, 2023.

Brewster was born March 31, 1939 in Leavenworth, Kansas, the son of Elmore “EW” William Snyder II and Helen Marjorie Stephens Snyder. Brewster leaves his son Brewster Benson Snyder II (wife Sandy), son Timothy Lucien Snyder (wife Esperanza), daughter Christina Mills (husband Roy) and daughter Lorraine Gervais (husband Glenn); grandchildren Heather Mills, Rebecca Mills, Bret Mills, Danielle Christensen, Gabrielle Mendoza, Bonnie Snyder and Timothy “TJ” Lucien Snyder Jr and great- grandchildren Gianna Mills, Makenzie Mills, Ava Christensen, Stella Christensen, Liam Wilson, Elijah Mendoza and Mila Mendoza.

Brewster was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Lou Snyder his parents Elmore “EW” William Snyder II and Helen Marjorie Stephens and his daughter Rebecca Snyder.

Brewster was a proud alumnus of Kansas University, graduating in June 1966 with a Bachelor Degree in Science, he wouldn’t leave the house without wearing his KU ball cap which frequently drew attention from other fans, Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

He joined the United States Air Force upon graduation and spent 20 years proudly serving his country,&nbsp;retiring with the rank of Captain. Brewster specialized in Explosive Ordnance Disposal and received&nbsp;many citations and commendations during his commission. Some of those were the Bronze Star,&nbsp;Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Gallantry Cross, Expert Marksmanship Ribbon,&nbsp;among others. Brewster was always recognized as a kind man by all. He enjoyed a long life on earth and spent his time&nbsp;enjoying his family, reading his bible and being there for each of us. He will be missed but his family&nbsp;knows he is in heaven and that brings peace to all.

Brewster leaves his son Brewster Benson Snyder II (wife Sandy), son Timothy Lucien Snyder (wife Esperanza), daughter Christina Mills (husband Roy) and daughter Lorraine Gervais (husband Glenn); grandchildren Heather Mills, Rebecca Mills, Bret Mills, Danielle Christensen, Gabrielle Mendoza, Bonnie Snyder and Timothy “TJ” Lucien Snyder Jr and great- grandchildren Gianna Mills, Makenzie Mills, Ava Christensen, Stella Christensen, Liam Wilson, Elijah Mendoza and Mila Mendoza.Brewster was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Lou Snyder his parents Elmore “EW” William Snyder II and Helen Marjorie Stephens and his daughter Rebecca Snyder.Brewster was a proud alumnus of Kansas University, graduating in June 1966 with a Bachelor Degree in Science, he wouldn’t leave the house without wearing his KU ball cap which frequently drew attention from other fans, Rock Chalk Jayhawk! He joined the United States Air Force upon graduation and spent 20 years proudly serving his country,&nbsp;retiring with the rank of Captain. Brewster specialized in Explosive Ordnance Disposal and received&nbsp;many citations and commendations during his commission. Some of those were the Bronze Star,&nbsp;Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Gallantry Cross, Expert Marksmanship Ribbon,&nbsp;among others. Brewster was always recognized as a kind man by all. He enjoyed a long life on earth and spent his time&nbsp;enjoying his family, reading his bible and being there for each of us. He will be missed but his family&nbsp;knows he is in heaven and that brings peace to all.Services are pending.<figure>

Joyce Elaine Bachtel, 74, of &nbsp;Leavenworth, Kansas, passed away on June 23, 2023 after a brief but valiant fight with brain cancer.&nbsp;

Joyce was born on February 26, 1949 to Edward and Lela Swartz. Joyce &nbsp;grew up in Chapman and Leavenworth, Kansas. She graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1967. She went on to earn her college degree in Elementary Physical Education from Kansas State Teachers’ College. She taught at Easton Elementary for several years before staying home to raise her three children. When her children were older, she &nbsp;was a substitute teacher and eventually the director of Jack and Jill Preschool for 20 years.&nbsp;

In 1970, Joyce married the love of her life, Donald Bachtel Jr. Together they shared 53 wonderful years of marriage, made a beautiful life together, and had three children: Jeff Bachtel, Sheri Schmidling, and Lori Hughes.&nbsp;

Joyce loved spending time with her family, attending her grandchildren’s school and extracurricular events. Additionally, Joyce enjoyed sports, the outdoors, camping and fishing. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Leavenworth, Kansas, where she sang in the church choir, played in the bell choir, directed the youth choir, was an elder, chairman of the elders, a member of the diaconate, and was actively involved in the church women’s ministry.&nbsp;

Joyce was predeceased by her parents Edward and Lela Swartz, her brother William Swartz, her in-laws Donald Bachtel Sr., Edith Bachtel, and her niece Janet Matthews. She is survived by husband, Donald Bachtel Jr., her son Jeff Bachtel and his wife, Christine, her daughter Sheri Schmidling and her husband, Jeff, her daughter Lori Hughes and her husband, Kevin, and her grandchildren: Taylor, Madelyn, Ryan, and Peyton Bachtel, Jenna and Andrew Schmidling, Landry, Haidyn, and Brynn Hughes. Survivors also include, her siblings Diane Nixon, Cheryl Matto, Ronald Swartz, their spouses and children, sister-in-law Patricia Swartz, &nbsp;and brother and sister-in-law Dean and Debbie Hammond.

Services will be Friday, June 30, 2023 at First Christian Church, 130 N. 6th St., Leavenworth, KS. Visitation is from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. The funeral is immediately following visitation.

Command Sergeant Major, A. Dean Tollefson, passed away Monday, May 15 at the age of 85 due to complications of Covid and his November 19, 2022 Traumatic Brain Injury. He was born January 29, 1938 at the Horton Hospital to Clarence and Clara (Torkelson) Tollefson of Willis, Kansas.

Known as the Noisy Norwegian, he created numerous smiles with his warm greetings and conversations. He filled hearts with hope as he spread his daily words of wisdom and notable quotes: “Every day is a good day, just some are better than others.” “The Lord won’t give you more than you can handle.” Always eager to lend a hand, a shoulder, an ear … he served others throughout his life.

He served his country from July 7, 1955 to January 29, 1998 through his service in the U.S. Army and the Kansas Army National Guard. He was elected into the Order of Saint Barbara, a military honor society for distinguished Artillerymen on November 20, 1982. His military honors include Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with 2 oak leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal, The Army Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (with 3 oak leaf clusters), the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (3 hour glass devices), the NCO Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 3 and Army Service Ribbon. At his 1998 retirement, a Staff Sergeant at the time (Robert Herlinger) described the retiring Command Sergeant Major Tollefson as “always putting the soldier before himself and finding the rose in everyone.” His soldiers often comment on his guidance and leadership molding great men, as well as great soldiers. Patriotism and the role of the People in our government were important topics for him. He lived to serve and stand with the common man and encourage the common man’s active involvement in our government.&nbsp;

He graduated as Salutatorian from Willis High School in 1956 behind his Valedictorian sweetheart, Peggy (Tobiason) Tollefson. He obtained his Associates degree from Highland Community College in May 1974. The childhood sweethearts, Dean and his devoted ex-wife, Peggy (Tobiason) Tollefson raised 5 children (Doug, Denise, Travis, Robin and Ryan) during their 42 year marriage and have treasured the memories and years with his 3 children, 3 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.&nbsp;

He served his clients at the Noisy Norwegian’s Nook through his Insurance Agency, accounting and tax services and enjoyed his years as a Rural US Postal Office Mail Carrier. In fact, he proudly enjoyed using 5 hours on a 3 hour mail route, leaving time to check on elderly families and friends. During his final years he enjoyed his work with Howard Auction Company and then LG Auction Company. He coached Little League Baseball, served more than 60 years in the Lions Club, was Scout Master with Boy Scouts of America and was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Everest. His senior years were blessed with conversations and kinship at Gary Shears Auto Repair Shop and Larry Chestnut’s Barber Shop.

He was an avid sports fan and followed the Hiawatha High School Redskins/Redmen through many seasons, tournaments and State Championships. His love of math and numbers led him to his special talent of timing and documenting the approach speed of pole vaulters and jumpers at the Kansas State High School Track Meet. Always a character and a friend to all, he usually would answer the question “how are you?” with “Better than yesterday.”

He is survived by his children Douglas Dean Tollefson, Denise Diane Tollefson, MD and Travis Tate (Jamie Funamura, MD) Tollefson, MD. &nbsp;Dean’s Grandchildren: Robin Diane Malloy, Ryan Douglas (Amber) Tollefson and Theo TateTollefson. Great Grandchildren: Jalen and Justice Malloy, Sydney, Ashlyn and Kristopher Tollefson and his Great Great Granddaughter born November 15, 2022 just 4 days before his Traumatic Brain Injury, she is Amora Rae the daughter of his beloved first great granddaughter, Sydney Nicole Tollefson. He had great pride in his Norwegian heritage and has imprinted that pride upon each of his descendants. Uff da!

He is also survived by his Sister Linda (Robert) Fee and nieces Exzondria Rodvelt and Lachelle (Shannon) Hartley. His brother’s children: Karen (Douglas) Tollefson-Foye and Troy (Amy) Tollefson.&nbsp;

Robert L. “Bob” Spicer, 75, of Hiawatha, died early Monday morning, June 26, 2023, at Maple Heights Nursing Home where he had been a resident since January.

Bob was born at Sabetha, October 26, 1947, one of four children born to Alva Leroy and Elizabeth Arnold Spicer and had lived most of his life in Hiawatha. He grew up south of Hiawatha and attended schools here and Willis before graduating with the last class at Robinson High School in 1966. Soon after high school, he served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict, discharged at the rank of sgt. In 1971. He served in the KSARNG in Hiawatha before being discharged in 1974.

After the military when his family was younger, they lived at Cozad Nebraska for 6 years where he worked for Monroe Automotive before returning to Hiawatha. He then joined the family business, Spicer Salvage, working with his father and brother Jim prior to working for CR Industries in Seneca for 14 years. In 2008, he started his own business recycling scrap metal until ill health forced him to retire.

He grew up in the Methodist Church in Willis.

He married Rose Ann McNett, August 12, 1974, at Church of Christ at Horton. They divorced in 1989 but still remained friends. She survives.

Also surviving is a son Michael Spicer (Tammy) of Fairview, step-daughter Karen Roland of Bellingham, Mass., a brother Jim Spicer of rural Hiawatha, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Linda Curless and Jane Stahl.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Thursday where the family will meet that evening from 5 until 7 p.m. Services will then be held with Shane Spangler officiating. Brown County Veterans Honor Guard will perform military honors. Cremation to follow service with private family inurnment at Corneilson Cemetery, Reserve.

Xela MaeLea passed away Friday, June 16th, 2023 at the age of 3 years, 3 months, and 3 days. She was born Friday, March 13th, 2020 in Americus, Georgia. She is the second youngest of 8 siblings.&nbsp;

Xela MaeLea had an undeniable pureness, and her tender love was felt by all she encountered. Xela was an adventurous child, and kept everyone on their toes. She was ornery, in the best way. Her inquisitive nature led to many revelations, and an appreciation for things often overlooked. She particularly had an admiration for picking flowers. She was abundantly vocal from birth, and habitually woke up singing. Xela was nurturing and affectionate towards her family, and always willing to share her love. She was exceptionally creative, and regularly expressed her imagination through art. Xela is the epitome of innocence and light. Her blue eyes were a reminder of the sincere beauty in life. Her smile was radiant, and her laughter was infectious. Xela offered the world a bright, lively, ambitious spirit that will be remembered by all.&nbsp;

Xela MaeLea is survived by mother, Corbyn; siblings: Kora Jean, Elias Ezra, Julina Ann, Estin Steiger, Livia Star, Ezrik Ira, and Enix Reed; grandparents, Julie Martin and Rick Reynolds; in addition to many other relatives and loved ones.

Xela MaeLea 2020 - 2023

Elmer Willard Gentry 84, of St. Joseph, MO., passed away Friday, June 23, 2023 in an Atchison, KS. hospital. He was born May 7, 1939 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Sarah and Willard Gentry. 

He graduated from Benton High School, class of 1957 and married Patricia Hurd on October 26, 1958 and she survives of the home. He served in the Army National Guard for twenty-five years retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer III. Elmer was the owner operator of Branson Furnace &amp; Appliance Co. 

He was a member the former Hyde Valley United Methodist Church, the Y-Fry club and was active in boy scouts as a troop leader and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, at Camp Geiger. He enjoyed coaching boys baseball, football and youth wrestling. &nbsp;He also loved to fish, hunt and mushroom hunt. 

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harold Gentry, and sister, Flora Mae Simmons. 

Survivors include wife, Patricia Lynn Gentry of the home, sons, Patrick (Debbie) Gentry, St. Joseph, MO, Timothy (Esra) Gentry, Cherry Hills Village, CO, daughter, Shelley (Rick) Berry, and a son, Elmer Joe (Corie) Gentry of Frankfort, IL, sister, Doris Chappell of St. Joseph, MO there are eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Funeral services and public live stream; 11:00 am, Thursday, June 29, 2023 at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Sparta Cemetery.

Elmer Willard Gentry 84, of St. Joseph, MO., passed away Friday, June 23, 2023 in an Atchison, KS. hospital. He was born May 7, 1939 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Sarah and Willard Gentry. He graduated from Benton High School, class of 1957 and married Patricia Hurd on October 26, 1958 and she survives of the home. He served in the Army National Guard for twenty-five years retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer III. Elmer was the owner operator of Branson Furnace &amp; Appliance Co. He was a member the former Hyde Valley United Methodist Church, the Y-Fry club and was active in boy scouts as a troop leader and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, at Camp Geiger. He enjoyed coaching boys baseball, football and youth wrestling. &nbsp;He also loved to fish, hunt and mushroom hunt. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harold Gentry, and sister, Flora Mae Simmons. Survivors include wife, Patricia Lynn Gentry of the home, sons, Patrick (Debbie) Gentry, St. Joseph, MO, Timothy (Esra) Gentry, Cherry Hills Village, CO, daughter, Shelley (Rick) Berry, and a son, Elmer Joe (Corie) Gentry of Frankfort, IL, sister, Doris Chappell of St. Joseph, MO there are eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Funeral services and public live stream; 11:00 am, Thursday, June 29, 2023 at the Rupp Funeral Home. Streausie M. Bryson, 92, King City, MO passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023, at a Stanberry, MO nursing home.

She was born on August 1, 1930, in Bolckow, Missouri the daughter of Loyd and Grace (Gerber) King.

On June 12, 1948, she married Jack Bryson in Savannah, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 24, 1990.

Streausie was a dedicated mother and farm wife. She was a member of the Hammer Memorial United Methodist Church in King City and the Ruth Circle there. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Mark Bryson.

Streausie is survived by her children, Sidney (Teresa) Bryson, Platte City, MO and Kristen (Wayne) Law, King City, MO; daughter-in-law, Jo Bryson, Union Star, MO; grandchildren, Emmett, Will, Casey, Matt, and Luke Bryson, Seth and Reagan Law, and Hannah Jundy; 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 30 at Roberson Funeral Home, King City, MO. Burial will follow in King City Cemetery, King City, MO. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dr. Larry Lindsey, 79, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and pastor, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2023.

He was born on September 8, 1943, to Joseph and Mary (Nelson) Lindsey in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Larry Lindsey enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1961 after graduating high school and was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky. On December 8, 1962, he was united in marriage to Marcia Ann Zartman. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2022.

Larry worked for Great American Insurance in Columbus for 12 years. Larry and his wife surrendered to ministry in 1975 and moved their family to Springfield, Missouri where he graduated from Baptist Bible College with his bachelor’s degree in theology in 1978. Upon graduation, he and his family moved to St. Joseph, Missouri to pastor at the Eastside Baptist Church, where he served for 45 years. Under his direction, Eastside Baptist Academy and Thank Heaven Daycare were founded. In 2000, Larry graduated from Louisiana Baptist University with his doctorate in biblical studies.

He was a man devoted to his family, telling others about the Lord Jesus Christ’s saving grace. Along with preaching about the gospel he also loved to sing gospel music as he played the piano. He was a loving husband, caring father and faithful friend. He had a larger-than-life personality with a unique laugh that made you smile.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Lindsey, and his brother, Ken Lindsey.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia; children, David and Timothy (Theresa) Lindsey; granddaughters, Lauren Smith (Bronson) and Victoria Lindsey; great granddaughter, Parker Grace; sister-in-law, Joyce Sholly (Duane); and nephews, Greg (Sue), Mark (Ronda) and Jeff.

Farewell Services 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, Eastside Baptist Church. Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service.

Valerie Ann Wigton passed away on June 21, 2023.

The eldest daughter of Chester and Gera Smith born on April 8, 1947, graduated from Lafayette High School, class of 1965, and also from St. Joseph Jr. College. She enjoyed many of her working years with Schmitt &amp; McClure, Oral &amp; Maxillofacial Surgeons and for Henry W. Fricke, Jr. DDS.

She loved to cook, sing, write poetry and was thrilled to be a published author. She wrote many articles to the Editor’s section of the News-Press when something caught her eye or heart. She taught children’s Sunday School for over 20 years and was a proud founding member of the Strong Tower Baptist Church.

She was married to Richard L. Bradley and a daughter graced their lives. They later divorced and she married the love of her life, W. Michael Wigton on January 4, 1981. He brought with him to the marriage a son and daughter, and they made a great family of five.

W. Michael survives of the home. She leaves behind her children, Julie Sherr of Loganville, GA, Jeffrey Wigton of Texas, and Sarah (David) Harper of Missouri City, TX. Also, her grandchildren, Nicholas and Ashlyn Sherr, Jeremiah and Liberty Wigton, her precious sister and brother-in-law, Verlynn and Dino Sansone of Platte City, MO, nephew, Ryan (Amber) Sansone of Platte City, niece Adrian (Jason) Smith of Kansas City. Other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, many friends, a wonderful church family, special friends, Pam Sunderland and Irene Sturgeon, and little sweetheart, Mason Matchett.

Keith “Grumpy” Felts, 72, Plattsburg, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at his home. &nbsp;

He was born August 18, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Ervin Earl and Stella Juanita (Reynolds) Felts.

Grumpy married Mary Ann Binsbacher on April 25, 1987. She survives of the home.

A member of the United Steel Workers Union, Grump worked for Armco Steel for 21 years.

Grumpy loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Independence Racing Club, National and Missouri Racing Pigeon Associations, and Missouri Trappers Association. He also raised rabbits and finches, as well as ran a bait shop, his primary interest was cabinet making and woodworking.&nbsp;

He served his country in the U.S. Army and also served his community as a three-term member of the Clinton County R-III School Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Shane Matthew Felts; and two brothers, Kerry Felts and Kenneth Felts.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Mary Ann; three sons, Myron Allen Felts and Brandon Ray Felts, both of the home, and Reginald Delano Felts of Pensacola, Florida; two grandsons, Zackary and Joey Felts; brother, Kevin Felts (Joyce) of Kansas City, Missouri; sister, Mitzi Currivan; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
