James Leonard Pillsbury, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023.

He was born July 22, 1935 in Cedar Springs, Michigan, to Robert and Lelah (Hosler) Pillsbury.

Jim married Ilene Margaret Theise on July 21, 1956. She preceded him in death on February 6, 2023.

Jim was a square dance caller, instructor and member of the Tanglefoot Squares square dance club for many years. In his youth, he participated in roller skating shows with his mother, even performing with a roller-skating bear. He also enjoyed camping and working with his hands; he could build or repair just about anything.

He was a member of New Life Bible Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ilene; his parents; and siblings, Robert Pillsbury, William Pillsbury, and Dawn Shoemaker.

Survivors include his children, Debbi (Tim) Kogler, Diane Brown, Chris Pillsbury, Jamie (Erin) Pillsbury, and Julie (Collin) Ryan; grandchildren, Kristen Inman (Brian), Angela Kogler, Aaron Brown (Amanda), Eli Pillsbury (MacKenzie), Karly Jo Pillsbury, Tabitha Rowland, Emma Fox (Bill), Allison Ryan and Casey Ryan; and great-grandchildren, Victoria Inman, Lucas Inman, and Lyla Jo Fox.

John Paul Raymond Scheidecker, 30, of Liberty,&nbsp;Missouri unexpectedly passed away July 30, 2023,&nbsp;and is fondly known to&nbsp;us as&nbsp;JP. John Paul was an amazing son, brother, uncle, and friend to many. His life was filled with the joy of shared dreams and ambitions&nbsp;for his life. His work ethic was&nbsp;respected&nbsp;by many.

John Paul graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. He owned his own business and was a true entrepreneur. He lived outside of Liberty on the land he loved. He was an avid wakeboarder, snowboarder, boater,&nbsp;dirt bike rider,&nbsp;hunter, and fisherman. He loved being outside, being on the lake,&nbsp;and exploring nature.&nbsp;He was a season ticket holder for the Kansas City Chiefs.&nbsp;His zeal for life was admired.&nbsp;He loved the Lord, and we know he is in heaven.&nbsp;

John Paul is survived by his mother Elaine Scheidecker, Smithville, MO. His brother Luke Scheidecker, Evansville, Indiana,&nbsp;and&nbsp;soon-to-be&nbsp;sister-in-law Tori&nbsp;Schickel, Evansville, Indiana. His niece and nephew, Cade and Brynn Scheidecker, Nashville, Illinois. Uncle Dana(Cherri) Scheidecker, Greely, Colorado; Uncle Marlen&nbsp;Bredberg, Laurens, South Carolina; Aunt Kris(Jeff) Williams, Stanton, Iowa, along with many cousins and friends.

Dorothy Mae Johnson, loving mother and grandmother, went to her eternal home on July 30, 2023. She was born on December 16, 1935, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to David and Ruth (Nichols) Rigby.

Dorothy was a loving mother to her children, James Adams, Dawn Vaughn (Phillip), and David B. Adams (Nicki), and stepson, Gary Harland. She adored her grandchildren, Dustin Benner (Barbara), Brenton Benner (Meagan), Hunter Adams (Jackenzie Todd), and Madison Adams. Her love also extended to her great-grandchildren, Myah Dwyer, Charlotte Benner, and Avah Benner. Dorothy was survived by her brother, David Rigby. Preceding her in death were her parents; the father of her children, Paul Adams; husbands, Kenneth Harland and Raymond Johnson; siblings, Carol Waitkoss, Robert Rigby, and Jerry Rigby.

Dorothy was a dedicated registered nurse, a testament to her lifelong service to others.

Her faith anchored her life, and she was an active member of Eastside Baptist Church. Dorothy’s love for music was evident in her enjoyment of playing the organ and piano.

Characterized by love and kindness, Dorothy leaves behind a beautiful legacy of service, faith, and music. She will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.

Mary Ann (Martin) Bumbacher, 78, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023.

She was born September 12, 1944, the daughter of Donald and Alma Martin. Mary Ann attended Hyde Elementary and was a 1962 graduate of Benton High School. She obtained a Bachelor of Education degree from Northwest Missouri State College in 1966. She taught eighth grade Language Arts at Benton High School and then at Spring Garden Middle School. She retired after thirty years of teaching. She met her husband, Don Bumbacher, while he was teaching at Benton. They were married June 12, 1970.

Mary Ann was a member of Missouri Retired Teachers Association, Saint Joseph Retired School Personal Association, P.E.O. Chapter HC, Jesse Janes Red Hat Society, and The Runcie Club. As a youth, she attended Hyde Park Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and in-laws, Vincent and Geraldine Bumbacher.

She is survived by her cat Winston and close friends Harold and Rebecca Stewart, Lynn Hudson and Glen Drake, Richard and Valerie Wilson, Margaret Martin, and Patti Bennett.

Frank B. “Skip” Withrow, age 91, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023 at home.

Frank was born January 15, 1932 to Frank and Helen Withrow in Maryville, Missouri. After graduating from Tarkio High School in 1950, he went on to study at Tarkio College.

After graduation in 1954, he married his high school love, Doris Adamson, and then served in the United States Army in Germany. Frank later went on to get his Masters degree and teach, which started his 50 years of service to children and young adults. He taught at Harden and Excelsior Springs and was school administrator for Ralls County and in Lathrop, Missouri, where he retired. Following retirement, he taught at St. Joseph Christian School and later drove a bus for the public school system.

Frank was a wonderful and devoted father, husband and teacher. He always taught valuable life lessons, generous with listening and sharing wisdom and wit, and supported his family through all life’s accomplishments and challenges. When Frank wasn’t at school, he could be found doing all types of projects fixing or building something. An avid fixer-upper and carpenter, Frank also enjoyed collecting model cars.

He was also active with his Christian faith, attending and serving as deacon at Center, Lathrop and Green Valley Baptist Churches, and an inactive deacon at Wyatt Park Baptist Church.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Harriet Staashelm.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Doris Withrow, and their son, Floyd Withrow of California; a Goddaughter, Patti Liefer (Ron and family) of Redbud, Illinois; and honorary adopted family, Rev. Terry and Betsy Hodges and family of Odessa, Missouri. Also, a brother-in-law, Franklin Staashelm (Carolyn) and niece, April Ronan, nephews, Ernest Staashelm (Christy) and Robert Staashelm (Susan) and families.

James "Jim" Coleman Byrd passed away on July 28, 2023 at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

James was born on September 17, 1963 in Leavenworth, Kansas to Daniel James and Cora Belle Byrd. He attended school in the Leavenworth School District. He later attended Foley-Belsaw Institute for small engine service and repair, where he received his certificate in 1983. He then went back to Foley-Belsaw Institute for advanced small engine repair and received his certificate in 1989. He later went and received his KS Arborists Training Course from the KS Arborists Association in 2013 and 2014.

James married Sherry Jean Howe on March 18, 2006. He enjoyed the company of his family and close friends. He always loved going fishing. He took extreme pride in helping his family out whenever he was able to. He also enjoyed practicing and playing the banjo and violin with Sherry. She would play the guitar, while he played either the violin or banjo.

Jim is preceded in death by his soulmate, Sherry Byrd, father, Daniel Byrd, mother Cora Byrd, two brothers, Rodney and Robert Byrd, sister, Margaret Mathews and his niece, Tracy Mathis.&nbsp;

Jim leaves behind two daughters, Chrystal Pultz and Zai West. He also is survived by his five grandchildren, Brittany Pultz, Brandon Pultz, Jr., Michael Pultz, Morgan West, and Lilly Warren, three great-grandchildren, Da'Marius Horton, Kai Allen West and Cohan Pultz, two sisters, Debra (Richard) Watkins and Brenda (Mark) Somers, brother Ed Ruga, as well as several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Jim's smile will be greatly missed.&nbsp;

Richard L. Rieger, age 84 of Hiawatha, died peacefully at home on Saturday, July 29, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Richard was born May 28, 1939 in Falls City, NE, son of Lothair and Frances (Wagner) Rieger. Richard and Mary Kay (Shubert) Rieger were married June 12, 1959 in Hiawatha recently celebrating 64 years together.

Richard was a farmer and Stockman. He farmed with his Father and Brother until his retirement in 2012. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist and First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha.

He was preceded in death by his Father Lothair, Mother, Frances and brother Delmar Rieger.

In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his two children:, son Russell of Dallas, TX; daughter Lori and husband Tom of Commack, NY; three grandchildren: Michele Andrews of Shady Side, MD; Kristen Kritikos (Pete) of Bayside, NY; and, Thomas Andrews of Commack, NY; brothers, Alvin (Carol) of Hiawatha and Stanley (Cathy) of Thomasville, GA and sister Carolyn of Topeka as well as many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

A celebration of Richard’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 2, at the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Dennis Frederick Petesch, Sr., 75 of Atchison, KS, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023, at the Atchison Senior Village.

Dennis was born October 8, 1947, the son of Frederick and Lucy (Bluma) Petesch. He was a mechanic for KCPL and Goodyear for many years. He was a past member of St. Theresea Catholic Parish, Perry, KS and the VFW in Topeka, KS. Dennis loved to farm and raise cattle, was a 4-H leader teaching auto repair. Nicholas A. Claycomb, 65, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away, July 30, 2023. Nicholas was born August 22, 1957, in St. Joseph to Leonard and Patricia (Garvey) Claycomb.

He graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School. Nicholas served his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corp; receiving a honorable discharge. &nbsp;

&nbsp;He was in management for Safeway Grocers and Walmart. He retired from Mosaic Life Care working in the cafeteria.

Nicholas married Karla J. Middleton on September 13, 1983, in St. Joseph and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Christopher Claycomb, Jacob Claycomb, Noelle Hazelrigg (Gregg), Jacey Claycomb, Jalyn Claycomb, Stephanie Claycomb, Jason Claycomb; several grandchildren; siblings Jeff, Julie, Pat, Tom, and Tony; other relatives and friends.

He was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He loved spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren and dogs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 3, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment and full military honors will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. She was born March 8, 1932, in St. Joseph, daughter of the late Grant and Eva (Green) Vaughn. She graduated from the 8th grade at Lake Station School. She married Melvin Dale Stinnett in 1951 and he survives of the home.

She worked in the peony fields as a girl, and later as a seamstress at Big Smith Mfg, but mostly as a wife and homemaker, enjoying raising her children, and helping with grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, cleaning, working around the house, and watching her soap operas. She collected birds, saved and organized newspaper clippings about friends and family, and created a library of pictures. She cooked many, many wonderful meals for her family. She will be greatly missed.

Jenny was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Wayne, Donald, and Lonnie Vaughn; sisters, Leona Curtis, and Lela Taylor; grandson, Brian Spalding; and great-grandson, Wyatt Richardson.

Celia Ann “Tillie” Reynolds, 101, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023.

She was born April 11, 1922 in Savannah to Albert and Rosetta (Page) Joslin. She grew up in Savannah.

Tillie married William Harry “Bill” Reynolds on July 27, 1937. They moved to an 80-acre farm near Stewartsville, Missouri, where they built their own house and shared 77 years together before Bill preceded her in death on March 15, 2015.

Tillie worked at the Swift &amp; Co. plant in St. Joseph for 20 years, starting out in the casing room, then spending many years working in the cafeteria.

She was a longtime member of Patee Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph.

In addition to tending to her huge garden and canning, and the baby livestock on the farm, Tillie enjoyed doing cross-stitch and watching the birds at her feeder. She loved to cook, making the best pies and egg noodles.

Tillie was always jolly with a sweet personality and a hug for everyone, but also kept her children in line.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; two sons, Larry Dale Reynolds and Bill Reynolds; daughter-in-law, Sharrie Reynolds; and siblings, Eddie Joslin, Albert Southwick and Buster Joslin.

Survivors include son, Jesse Reynolds; three grandchildren, Karrie Spor (Gerry), Kelly Reynolds (Laurie) and Terri Heater; five great-grandchildren, Adam Treece, Kristina Nold, Jennifer Churchill, Jessica Roe and Heather Heater; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Michael A. Barsch, 67, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2023.

He was born December 15, 1955 in St. Joseph to Cletus and Delia (Hunt) Barsch. Michael grew up in St. Joseph, attending St. Patrick Catholic School and graduating from Central High School in 1974.

He belonged to a Ski Club that hit the slopes on multiple trips and also was a member of the Singles Club at St. Joseph Cathedral. He later earned the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Status.

He was an auto mechanic for Sears Automotive for 20 years and also kept all of the vehicles running for his friends and family.

After Sears, he worked in the Motor Pool at Fort Riley in Kansas, then upon returning to St. Joseph he was a custodian at St. Patrick School and a bartender at the Muny Inn.

It was around this time that Michael met the love of his life, Nancy Simmons. They enjoyed 15 years together before her passing.

Michael was very protective of his friends and family, especially his nieces and nephews.

He was welcomed home to Heaven by his beloved girlfriend, Nancy; nephew, A.J. Goehring III; parents; and sister, Teresa Ann Barsch.

Survivors include his siblings, Mary Swymeler (Gary), Kathy Stufflebean (Leroy), Cletus Barsch Jr. (Patti), Raymond Barsch (Kerry), John Barsch (Angela) and Kim Goehring; and was blessed with an abundance of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Betsy Hoffman, born on January 2, 1950 in St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away on July 26, 2023. The definition of a loving woman, Betsy ceaselessly spread love and kindness to all those in her life. Alongside her role as a proud member of the B.B.A., Betsy adored spending time with her friends and family, which added warmth to their lives.

Born to her late parents, William and Betty Hoffman, her tremendous love for family was evident in every aspect of her life. Betsy's precious memories will be cherished by her children: Chad Justus, Mark K. Grieshaber, Jr., James Jagodzinski, Dustin Owens, Jameson Owens, and Jim Lake. Additionally, she leaves behind an adoring brother, William "Biff" Hoffman (Donna); grandchildren, Shanin, Aubrey, Edan, Keitan, Landyn, Cayge; 10 great- grandchildren, and countless friends.

Betsy was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jeremy Grieshaber, and brother Keith Hoffman. Her radiant smile and generous heart will be missed deeply by everyone fortunate enough to have called her family or friend.

Betsy Hoffman 1950 - 2023

Gladys Corrine Wedekind was born on January 24, 1927 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. She was the youngest of five children born to Charles W. and Rosie (Baker) Hartmann.

She married William K. "Bill" Wedekind in Gordonville, Missouri on November 6, 1949. They were happily married for more than 50 years until Bill's passing in 2003. Their marriage was a true testimony to commitment, love, and communication.

In the late 1960's Gladys and Bill moved to Oregon, Missouri where Bill built Gladys their "dream home". &nbsp;She worked as a teacher's aide at the South Holt Elementary School and proved to be an exceptional mother and member of her community. &nbsp;

She was devout in her Christian faith and an active member of the Oregon United Methodist Church. She loved being a member of her sorority group Adelpha Club and the UMW. She participated in many community events yearly and was known for her numerous pies made for the Kiwanis' Fall Festival booth.

Gladys enjoyed gardening, sewing, and especially baking. Each fall Gladys and Bill made their phenomenal apple cider that they produced from their home orchard, pressing hundreds of gallons each year. Gladys followed the Chiefs and Royals religiously as a dedicated (and sometimes loud) fan. &nbsp;Gladys was extremely generous in her donations, especially to children of third world countries and Veteran organizations.&nbsp;

Gladys passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2023 in Savannah, Missouri at the age of 96.

In addition to her husband, Bill, she was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Colista Thoma, Hadley Hartmann, James Hartmann, and Stella Cook; and daughter, Jane Ann Morrill.

Survivors include her son, Kim D. (Sharon) Wedekind of Platte City, Missouri; son-in-law, Pat Morrill of Kansas City, Kansas; sister-in-law, Carol Wedekind of Webster Groves, Missouri; grandchildren, Jen (Todd) Johnson, Rebecca (Ven) Pasnoori, Kate Fox (Paul) Collins, Connor (Danielle) Fox, Rachel (Roman) Piper, Jacob (Katie) Wedekind, Mason Morrill, Jenny Morrill, nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Family will greet friends on Sunday, July 30, 2023 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Chamberlain Funeral Home in Oregon. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 10:00 am at the Zion United Methodist Church in Gordonville, Missouri, with burial at the Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Oregon United Methodist Church or to the Zion United Methodist Church.

Robin was born on Sept. 27, 1975, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Bradley Sullivan and Brenda Moseley. 

Survivors include her parents, two sons Ian Wiseman and Taylor Sullivan, two brothers Todd Sullivan and Christopher Sullivan, two sisters Melanie Clouse and Lacy Sullivan and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Stuart Wayne Praiswater, 57, Bolckow, MO passed away Wednesday, July 26th, 2023 in Barnard, MO. He was born June 26, 1966 to Larry Dean &amp; Beverly Louise (Roberts) Praiswater. He married Luane Sue Praiswater in Fillmore, MO on May 19th, 1989 and she preceded him in death in 2019, she was the love of his life.&nbsp;

Stu loved his family and the time he spent with them. He enjoyed cardinal baseball, chiefs football, coffee and busch heavy. He loved being a grandad and spending time with his grandson. His girls were his world and treasured the time that they spent together. They did a lot together and loved treating them to prime rib at Fredrick Inn. The time he got to spend with his friends and family is time that he never took for granted and enjoyed every minute of it. His smile and laughter could light up a room and was always the kindest person in the room. He spent his years being a structural steel detailer and had a true love and talent for it.&nbsp;

Survivors include his daughters, Chelsi Praiswater (Trevor Hines) of Barnard, MO and Holly Praiswater of Maryville; brothers, Alan (Sue) Praiswater of Fillmore, MO, Randy (Cindy) Praiswater of Country Club, MO, and Mike (Kim) Praiswater of Platte City, MO; grandson, Swayde Hines. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, sister Kathy Schmitt, and brother Doug Praiswater.

Craig Scott Wiggington 55, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2023 in St. Joseph. He was born June 28, 1968, son of the late Carol &amp; John Wiggington. 

He graduated from Benton High School, Class of 1986. He worked at the Degginger's Foundery for many years. He loved river fishing and the Kansas City Chiefs. 

Craig was preceded in death by his parents, son, Dylan Scott Allen Wiggington, brother, Roger Wiggington, and sister, Stacey Wiggington. 

He is survived by wife, Stephenie Wiggington, of the home, sons, Mathew Lenzmeier and Michael (Megan) Lenzmeier of St. Joseph, MO, and 8 grandkids.

Leroy “Sonny” Phillips passed away July 26, 2023.

He was born in St. Joseph on November 26, 1939, to Leroy and Sophia (Jaroski) Phillips. He was a member of the Lafayette High School class of 1958.

On September 1, 1961, he married Barbara Minor.

Sonny was the first born, first to wake up, first to the party and the first to help everyone. He enjoyed owning fast cars. In his younger years, he kept the police busy writing tickets. He was a member of the St. Joseph Boat and Yacht Club, and the Happy Hookers fishing group. He enjoyed Missouri River boating with his family and fishing with his friends. For many years he was a season ticket holder for the KC Chiefs and enjoyed NHRA events.

Sonny had a great sense of humor and enjoyed pulling pranks. He was always updating everyone about where to get the cheapest beer and gas. He liked a tenderloin with a beer on the side and good conversation with his family and friends close by.

Sonny retired from Seitz Foods in 2001 after 36 years of service.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, a stepbrother, grandson, Dustin Beaman, and many great friends.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara, son, Mark Phillips (Tina), daughter, Marcia Beaman (Kevin), granddaughters, Nichole and Brandi Beaman, great-grandchildren, Jace, Dayton, Kinnzlie and Bre’Auna, sisters, Nancy Reder and Susie Bohart, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sonny was liked by everyone. He was known as a good man who worked hard to create a great life for his family and will be missed by many.

Per Sonny’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Leroy 'Sonny' Phillips 1939 - 2023

Nancy Lou Wessel, 91, of Atchison, died peacefully Tuesday evening, July 25, 2023, at her home after a short illness.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a visitation and luncheon immediately following the service in the church's parish hall.

Nancy was born on Sept. 16, 1931, in Atchison, the daughter of Chester J. and Frances E. Keating. She attended schools in Atchison, St. Joseph and Fayetteville, S.C. She graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph in 1947.

She met William C. Wessel, Jr., at St. Joseph Junior College, where both participated in theater. After junior college Nancy finished her studies at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa, with a bachelor's degree in Spanish.

Nancy and William C. Wessel, Jr., were married Nov. 1, 1952, at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Joseph. He preceded her in death in 2014.

Nancy was a stay-at-home mom while living in St. Joseph, devoted to her husband and four children. While living in St. Joseph, Nancy was heavily involved in community activities. She was a member and president of the St. Joseph Junior League, a founder of the Meals on Wheels program and heavily involved in the St. Joseph's Children's Community Theater.

In February of 1976, the family moved to Atchison, where she and Bill became the proprietors of Waisner and Shelver, a ladies clothing store and bridal shop at 515 Commercial St. It previously had been owned and operated by her parents and grandparents.

Upon retirement in 1993, Nancy and Bill headed south to their beloved Hope Town, Abaco Bahamas. Their little slice of paradise was a place to unwind, make new friends and enjoy family visiting from time to time. While winters were spent there, many late summer vacations took them to Estes Park, Colo.

Later in life, the travel bug bit Nancy, and she circumvented Iceland in 2018, explored Ireland and Scotland in 2019 and cruised along the Mexican coast and Southern Caribbean in 2022.

Left to cherish her memory are her four children: Nina (Gerald) Schletzbaum, Good Intent; William C. Wessel III, Atchison; Lydia (Sam) Funk, Atchison; and Nanette Kissenberth, Warren, Vt. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Lauren (Tyson) Fitzpatrick, Atchison; Madison Wood, Burlington, Vt.; Mary-Kate (Abby) Funk, Liberty, Mo.; Garner (Ashley) Funk, Atchison; and William Christian Wessel IV, Atchison; and four great-granddaughters, Abigail, River, Ava and Brynn.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, George Kissenberth, Warren, Vt.

Nancy Lou Wessel, 91, of Atchison, died peacefully Tuesday evening, July 25, 2023, at her home after a short illness.Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a visitation and luncheon immediately following the service in the church's parish hall.Nancy was born on Sept. 16, 1931, in Atchison, the daughter of Chester J. and Frances E. Keating. She attended schools in Atchison, St. Joseph and Fayetteville, S.C. She graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph in 1947.She met William C. Wessel, Jr., at St. Joseph Junior College, where both participated in theater. After junior college Nancy finished her studies at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa, with a bachelor's degree in Spanish.Nancy and William C. Wessel, Jr., were married Nov. 1, 1952, at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Joseph. He preceded her in death in 2014.Nancy was a stay-at-home mom while living in St. Joseph, devoted to her husband and four children. While living in St. Joseph, Nancy was heavily involved in community activities. She was a member and president of the St. Joseph Junior League, a founder of the Meals on Wheels program and heavily involved in the St. Joseph's Children's Community Theater.In February of 1976, the family moved to Atchison, where she and Bill became the proprietors of Waisner and Shelver, a ladies clothing store and bridal shop at 515 Commercial St. It previously had been owned and operated by her parents and grandparents.Upon retirement in 1993, Nancy and Bill headed south to their beloved Hope Town, Abaco Bahamas.
