Joyce Y. Brown, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 29, 1936 to Max Burdette and Bernice Pearl (Young) Kepner in Creston, Iowa.

Joyce married Ronald Fay Brown on June 15, 1956.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed being with her family and friends. She was a Cub and Girl Scout Leader for many years.

Joyce enjoyed owning her business “Brown’s Variety Store” and traveling with her flea market business. She worked for Eagles Wings Medical Transportation for many years. She and her husband Ronnie enjoyed traveling together while he was still living.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, her siblings Harold M. Kepner, Billie G. Kepner, Robert L. Kepner, Bernice “Betty” Andeson, Margaret June Adams and many other family members.

Survivors include her children Debra B. Harris, Ronald F. Brown, Jr. (Carol), David Brown, Ronda K. Hinton (Brian), 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 5 great great-grandchildren.

Service 3:00 P.M. Thursday, Simplify Cremations &amp; Funerals. Visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Floyd Eugene Oswald, 89, life-long farmer of Muscotah, KS passed away Thursday, June 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family. Floyd was born February 24, 1934, in Horton, KS the son of Oliver Henry and Alice (Wenger) Oswald. He attended ACCHS in Effingham and graduated in 1952. Floyd married Alleta Frommer on August 26, 1956, at the Coal Creek United Methodist Church. Together they celebrated 66 years of marriage. Floyd lived a full life and made many friends along the way. He served as a sergeant in the Kansas Army National Guard’s 130th Division at Horton, Kansas from 1954 -1963. Floyd worked at LFM Foundry – now Bradken - for seven years while farming full time. He was an avid livestock and grain farmer and steward of the land. Countless hours were spent on his bulldozer putting in waterways, terraces, and ponds throughout the county as a soil conservation contractor. Floyd had a passion for Farmall tractors. He spent many hours in his garden, sharing much of his produce with senior citizens at Effingham, friends, and neighbors. Several years he enjoyed surprising the children of the neighborhood dressed as Santa Claus. For 28 years he served on the Kapioma Township Board as treasurer. He served nine years on the board of directors for Jackson Farmer’s Inc. Floyd always wanted to be a county commissioner and his wish came true when he was elected as Atchison County Commissioner in 2000. He served two consecutive 4-year terms. Floyd liked to help others and would often volunteer whenever he could. He served on various church boards and attended the Larkinburg Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Alleta, of the home; his three children, Donna Oswald of Atchison, Gregg (Terri) Oswald of Muscotah, and Ronda (Ray) DeLay of Holton; six grandchildren; Rachel (Kyle) Haught, Jackson DeLay (fiancé Jessie Chastain), Paige DeLay, Michael Oswald, Ashlea (Jonathan) Fedler, and James Oswald; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Gary Bottorff. He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother and sister-in-law Roger and Vivian Oswald, and his younger sister Jessie Bottorff. Family visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, Kansas. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Becker Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Armstrong and Rev. Johnny Williams officiating. William “Rocky” Simpson, 69, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

He was born on November 29, 1953, in St. Joseph, Missouri to William F. and Frances M. (Smith) Simpson.

He was a graduate of Savannah R-III School District and spent many years working as a carpenter and laborer for local companies and also in Florida after moving there in 1988. He returned to Missouri in 2000 to the Lake of the Ozarks area and worked for the local hospital. He later relocated to the Branson area where he retired from the HCW Development Co. After retirement he returned to Savannah.

Rocky enjoyed hunting and fishing, and in his younger years he enjoyed playing softball. He was a self-proclaimed car buff, having owned a few classic vehicles. His family was very special to him, and he enjoyed spending his time with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his children, Trevor Simpson (Lauren) and Adam Simpson (Stacy); five granddaughters and one grandson; his siblings, Jeannie Snapp (Corky), Randy Simpson (Carla) and David Simpson (Chellie Gilbert).

Jerry Lee White, II, 38, Faucett, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

He was born on December 21, 1984, to Jerry Lee and Julie Ann (Lanning) White in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Jerry earned his bachelor’s degree and used his talents in many different career fields, working as a paramedic, respiratory therapist, HVAC technician and master electrician. In 2011, he met the love of his life, Breonna Roach. They were united in marriage in 2017.

Jerry was a proud member of the NRA and passionate about defending the 2nd amendment. He enjoyed spending his time goldmining, hunting, cooking, riding his motorcycle, traveling, and was always looking to further his academic knowledge. Jerry was a hard-working family man, who will be missed dearly by his loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Bill Lanning and Charlie Pennington, great-aunt, Connie Brooks, and great-grandmother, Goldie Brooks.

Survivors include his wife, Breonna; their beloved children, Chandler, Paige, Anaela, Josh and Owen; his parents, Jerry and Julie; siblings, Heidi Surritt, Rena White, Amanda Sowards, Jeremy White, Jacob White, Josh White and Samantha White; stepsiblings, Billy and Carry Hafley; maternal grandmother, Nancy Pennington; paternal grandmother, Pat Weaks (TJ); and his beloved service dog, Freki.

Verlin Lamaster Eaton was born in Maysville, Missouri on December 14, 1940 to Albert Lamaster and Daisy Juanita (Murphy) Eaton. Verlin grew up on the family farm in Maysville with his brothers and sister.

On January 25, 1963 he married Delores Virginia Hester. Out of this union a son was born, Lance Eaton.

Verlin served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. He worked for the City of Maysville, owned and operated the Conoco service station, and retired as an over-the-road truck driver.

Verlin passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at his St. Joseph home.

Survivors include his son, Lance; brothers, Gary and wife Pat of Forest City, Missouri, and Terry Eaton of Maysville; nephews, Jim and Austin Eaton; nieces, Joy Beers, Janesca Proctor and Heather Eaton; and his dog, Duke, who was his pride and joy.

Verlin is now reunited in Heaven with his wife Delores; his parents; brother, Eric Eaton; sister, Marjorie Moody; and two nieces.

Patty Jo (Corless) Suholaski 81, passed away peacefully with her family by her side Wednesday June 28, 2023.

Patty was born March 18, 1942 in Saint Joseph, MO to William and Pauline (Bray) Corless. She was a graduate of the Convent of the Sacred Heart. Patty worked for the Saint Joseph News Press/Cablevision and retired in 2005.

Patty married her soulmate John Suholaski on June 20, 1964 and they recently celebrated their 59th Anniversary. John survives her at their home.

Patty was a parishioner at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church. &nbsp;She was involved in the Altar Society, the Food Pantry and Food Kitchen, as well as the Women on the Go. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved being with her grandchildren and attended many graduations, plays, and sporting events.

Patty was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Karen Gregg and Sharon Keegan.

She is survived by her two children, Amy Barnett of Saint Joseph and Jon (Marilu) Suholaski of Lee’s Summit, MO, her grandchildren Abby, Paige, Ryan, Lily and Jane.

Carolyn was born on May 21, 1940 to Caryl and Ruby (Campbell) Kent in Rea, MO. They preceded her in death. She met her husband, Bill, while still in high school. Together they raised three daughters and were married for 66 years. She was a member of the King City First Baptist Church.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter Julie and sister Sue Meadows. Survivors in addition to her husband include daughters Shelley (Bryan) Taylor, Lowell, AR and Kristie (Brian) Burkert, St. Joseph, MO; sister Linda Slayden, St. Joseph, MO; 3 grandchildren, Jacob, Megan and Will; 3 step-grandchildren, Joanne, Beth and Devon; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Carolyn Taylor 1940 - 2023

Dolores Ann Wells passed away on June 26, 2023, in Annandale, Virginia. She was born in St. Joseph at St. Joseph’s Hospital (Sisters’ Hospital) on January 2, 1950, to Zip and Dolores (Allen) Wells. 

Dolores graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School in 1968. She earned her bachelor’s in microbiology from Creighton University, Omaha, NE. She moved to the Washington, D.C. area and resided there for more than 50 years, retiring from the National Institutes of Health as an analyst in 2018. Dolores was a two-time cancer survivor and two-time stroke survivor. She loved walks outdoors, was a voracious reader of many books and was a loyal subscriber to the Washington Post.

She was preceded in death by her brother Michael Lee Wells in 1976; her mother Dolores in 1999 and her father Zephaniah “Zip” Wells in 2010.

Survivors include Dolores’ brothers Richard Wells (Sue); Robert Wells (Debbie), all of St. Joseph; nephew Brandon Wells of Kansas City; niece Carissa Crabb and great-nephew Oliver Crabb of St. Joseph.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Meierhoffer Funeral Home &amp; Crematory in St. Joseph, Missouri at a future date.

Dolores Ann Wells passed away on June 26, 2023, in Annandale, Virginia. She was born in St. Joseph at St. Joseph’s Hospital (Sisters’ Hospital) on January 2, 1950, to Zip and Dolores (Allen) Wells. Dolores graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School in 1968. She earned her bachelor’s in microbiology from Creighton University, Omaha, NE. She moved to the Washington, D.C. area and resided there for more than 50 years, retiring from the National Institutes of Health as an analyst in 2018. Dolores was a two-time cancer survivor and two-time stroke survivor. She loved walks outdoors, was a voracious reader of many books and was a loyal subscriber to the Washington Post.She was preceded in death by her brother Michael Lee Wells in 1976; her mother Dolores in 1999 and her father Zephaniah “Zip” Wells in 2010.Survivors include Dolores’ brothers Richard Wells (Sue); Robert Wells (Debbie), all of St. Joseph; nephew Brandon Wells of Kansas City; niece Carissa Crabb and great-nephew Oliver Crabb of St. Joseph.A Celebration of Life service will be held at Meierhoffer Funeral Home &amp; Crematory in St. Joseph, Missouri at a future date.

Duane Loyd Cameron, 80, of Lancaster, KS, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

He was born June 17, 1943 in Atchison, Kansas, to John L. and Jennie E. Cameron.

He served his country as a machinist in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31.

Duane married Lucille Ann Erpelding on April 7, 1972. His loving wife preceded him in death on July 19, 2016.

He was a welder, machinist and steel worker at Rockwell International &amp; Atchison Casting for over 40 years.

Duane most enjoyed tinkering with engines and “engineering” items around his property. He liked to hunt &amp; fish, but enjoyed watching the wildlife even more. He loved his dogs and cats. He enjoyed cheering for the Chiefs, Royals and Jayhawks.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, John J. and William T.; and his sister, Dorothy Mae Ford.

Survivors include his two sons, Steven Cameron and John Cameron.

Committal services for both Duane &amp; Lucille will be scheduled at a later date at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Zelma LaRue (Staggs) Cook, 84, of Dearborn, MO passed away, June 27, 2023.

She was born on September 1, 1938 to Wallace Paul and Alda Price (Gowen) Staggs in St. Joseph, MO. She was a 1956 graduate of North Platte High School. She then attended Gard’s Business College which prepared her for various office skills.

Zelma was employed by Cook Paint and Varnish Company in North Kansas City in the Accounting Department, Dannen Mills in St. Joseph, and St. Joseph Tent and Awning Company. Zelma worked for M&amp;M Hearing Aid Company in Kansas City, managing several hearing aid fitters at age 25. She was co-owner of Cook Hearing Aid, Inc (1976) and Hearing Aid Center of St. Joseph (1994) where she worked for 39 ½ years as well as designing two new office buildings for the company.

On Easter Sunday April 21, 1957 Zelma and Bill were united in marriage at the Dearborn Christian Church by Brother Robert Beaman and were blessed with 64 years together. Their only daughter, Annette, was a joy for them. They lived in Dearborn where they made their home. Her husband, Bill, passed away, February 13, 2022.She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Robert Wayne Cook on September 2, 1964; her parents; and step-mother, Alma Meyer Staggs in 2008.

Zelma accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at the Dearborn Christian Church and was baptized by Brother Floyd B. Taylor, of St. Joseph on December 2, 1951. She taught the primary Sunday School class, served as Sunday School Treasurer, on several committees, and was Deaconess and became an Elder on April 16, 1989.Zelma enjoyed keeping their home, gardening, canning, her rose garden, preparing home cooked meals for family and washing her car by hand in addition to her office duties. She had a joyful time baking with Lydia.

Zelma is survived by her faithful, loving, and caring daughter, Dr. Annette LaJean Burris and husband Bob; dearly loved granddaughter, Lydia and husband Sam; great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Staggs and wife Colleen; a niece and nephew, other relatives and many friends.

He was married to Linda Mae Kasten in August 1961. They were later divorced. He was married to Mary Louise Bridges on February 14, 1995. She survives at home. Additional survivors include two sons, Steve (Debbie Lewis) Henning, and Scott (Kiley Young) Henning both of Atchison, KS, two daughters, Stacy Henning and Anita Henning, both of Atchison, KS, sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. His parents, a sister, Darlene Steele, a granddaughter, Alexis Boldridge, and great grandson, Waylon Messinger preceded him in death.

She attended Lafayette High School. Ashley loved spending time with her children. She was a goofy, fun loving mom and a cool aunt. 

Ashley was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Georgia Lou DMoss. 

Survivors include her parents, her boyfriend, Jonathan Hockaday of St. Joseph her children, Dalton Clark, Dakota Clark, Destiny Clark, Nevaeh Hockaday, Colton Hockaday, Kimberly Hockaday and Jonathan Hockaday, brother, Adam Clark, sister, Amber (Cameron) Clark, maternal grandmother, Loretta Bosch, 2 nieces and 2 nephews, all of St. Joseph.

Bertha Sue McLaury 66, of Saint Joseph, MO passed away  Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at a local health care center. She was born September 30, 1956 in St. Joseph, daughter of Louise and Raymond McLaury. 

She graduated from Benton High School. Bertha worked at Stetson Hats for 25 years. Her hobbies included sewing, doing crafts, knitting, baking, working puzzles and reading, especially romance novels. 

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents. 

Survivors include daughters, Kimberlie McLaury and Angela McLaury of St. Joseph, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

John Richard "Dick" Pierce, 89, of Hamilton, MO passed away Monday, June 26, 2023 at his home in Hamilton, MO. He was born August 18, 1933 in Portland, OR, son of Gwendolyn Pierce. 

He attended the Columbia Academy in Battle Ground, WA. Dick married Shirley Mitts Carter on January 20, 1978 in Vancouver, WA. Dick spent many years working as a Welder for various off shore drilling rigs. Later Dick and Shirley co-owned the Heights Tavern in Vancouver. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge. Dick loved playing with trains and was a member of the Las Vegas Garden Railway Society. 

His other hobbies included golfing, playing the accordion and guitar. He enjoyed bluegrass and country music and was an avid football fan, especially Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos and KC Chiefs. 

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Rick and Mike Pierce and brother, Alan Pierce. 

Survivors include wife, Shirley Pierce of the home, his children, Vickie (Dave) Gaines of Black Canyon, AZ, Kevin (Rhonda) Pierce of Vancouver, WA, step-children, Michael (Gale) Carter of Hamilton, MO, Leslie &nbsp;Carter of Longview, WA, Bill (Carrie) Carter of Basehor, KS and Debbie (Robert) Carlson of Pensacola, FL, brother, Larry (JoLynn) Pierce of Grand Junction, CO, sister-in-law, Pam Pierce of Brinnon, WA, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Amber Jean Snyder 1985 - 2023

Bettie Jean “Jeanie” (Hundley) Miner, age 92, of Atchison, Kansas, died June 24, 2023, at a care facility in Overland Park, KS. She was born on May 20, 1931, in Atchison, the daughter of Bryant Henry Hundley and Ruby Myrtle (Tull) Hundley. She attended Washington, Sunnyside and Franklin grade schools before graduating from Atchison High School in 1949. She continued her education at Vo-Tech for secretarial training.

Jeanie was most importantly a mother and grandmother. She was a Brownie Scout Leader while raising her children. She managed the Mode O’day, was employed at the Wagon Wheel, and was a custodian at Rockwell, St. Benedict’s College and USD 409 until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the Carol Baptist Church where her and Richard “Dick” Van Wey, were married; they later divorced. She married Gary Martin; they divorced and she married Larry Miner; they divorced. She enjoyed the time she shared with, Bob Barnes, until his passing. (Susan) Hundley, St. Joseph, MO; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-two great grandchildren and nineteen great-great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Bettie Jean “Jeanie” (Hundley) Miner, age 92, of Atchison, Kansas, died June 24, 2023, at a care facility in Overland Park, KS. She was born on May 20, 1931, in Atchison, the daughter of Bryant Henry Hundley and Ruby Myrtle (Tull) Hundley. She attended Washington, Sunnyside and Franklin grade schools before graduating from Atchison High School in 1949. She continued her education at Vo-Tech for secretarial training.Jeanie was most importantly a mother and grandmother. She was a Brownie Scout Leader while raising her children. She managed the Mode O’day, was employed at the Wagon Wheel, and was a custodian at Rockwell, St. Benedict’s College and USD 409 until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the Carol Baptist Church where her and Richard “Dick” Van Wey, were married; they later divorced. She married Gary Martin; they divorced and she married Larry Miner; they divorced. She enjoyed the time she shared with, Bob Barnes, until his passing. Denise "Dee" Schroeder passed away on June 26, 2023, in her hometown of St. Joseph, Missouri. Born on February 21, 1961, Dee lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to her family and work.

Dee was a hardworking individual, who spent 23 years as a restaurant manager for McDonald's, and a total of 31 years in the restaurant industry.

She was a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan, and she never missed a game. She had a fondness for tie-dye, Mickey Mouse, music, and the color red. She was also an animal lover, and she had a special place in her heart for dogs. Dee's love for Diet Pepsi was well-known among her friends and family, and she could often be seen with one in her hand.

Dee loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy, and she cherished every moment she spent with them.

Dee was preceded in death by her father, Wilbur Smith, and her grandmother, Esther Courtney.

She is survived by her mother, Marilyn (Courtney) Smith, her children, Jeremy Schroeder (Kristy), Lea Campbell, and Jason Schroeder (Tanya), her brothers, Chris Smith and Rick Smith, and her cherished grandchildren, Samantha Schroeder, Madison Schroeder, Wyatt Schroeder, Aaron Campbell, and Cordelia Schroeder.

Mark A. Higgins, a loving and generous man, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2023, at the age of 73. Born on September 4, 1949, in Palmer, TN, Mark was known for his friendly nature and his willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Mark is survived by his wife, Judy A. Stratton-Higgins, whom he married on July 3, 2010. He is also survived by his children, Christina and Ricky Higgins; stepdaughter, Laura Miller (Derek); grandchildren, Lisa and Luis; great-granddaughter, Jana; siblings, Phylis Petro, Robert "Phillip" Higgins (Yaunna), and Susan Vienhage (Thomas); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Robert L. Higgins and Lillie B. Higgins-Bish; grandchild, Denise; and siblings, David Higgins, Janice Gillam, and Larry Higgins.

Mark proudly served in the United States Army as an engineer, where he specialized in building bridges and demolition. His time in the military allowed him to develop a strong work ethic and a deep sense of patriotism, which he carried with him throughout his life.

In his free time, Mark enjoyed hunting and metal detecting, often sharing his finds with friends and family. He was also a skilled carpenter, using his talents to do remodeling. Mark's love for travel took him to many places, but he especially enjoyed visiting Germany to spend time with his grandchildren.

Mark will be remembered for his loving and generous spirit, as well as his friendly demeanor. He touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Mark A. Higgins 1949 - 2023

Roy Dean Travis, 89, formerly of Mound City, Missouri, passed away at the age of 89 surrounded by his family on October 30, 2022, in Westminster, Colorado.

Dean was born on March 21, 1933, to Roy and Rosetta (Combs) Travis in Mound City. He was the youngest of eleven children. Dean spent his younger years attending Mound City schools where he was a standout athlete.&nbsp;This was also where he met his sweetheart, Sue Forney. Dean and Sue wed in 1951 and were married for 66 years before her death in 2018.

Dean spent two years in the US Army before attending Northwest Missouri State University, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education.

Dean's natural athletic ability and love of sports directed his career path. He was hired by the Lamar School District in 1959 as the first full time elementary school physical education teacher. He held that position for 34 years. Dean implemented the annual Little Olympics and Flag Football Playdays. Dean's early influence inspired many Lamar students on the path to successful athletic careers.

After retirement, Dean and Sue moved to Scottsdale, Arizona. They enjoyed many years of travel to numerous countries, spending summers at their cabin in Guffey, Colorado, and staying active in the First Christian Church of Scottsdale.

In addition to his wife, Sue, Dean was preceded in death by their infant son, Scott; granddaughter, Katie Coulter; brother-in-law, Phil Forney; nine sisters and one brother.

Dean is survived by three daughters, Kerri (Mike) Coulter, Sherri (Jim) Fleetwood, and Nikki (Warren) Brown; son, Tim Travis; and sister-in-law, Mary Frances Forney. Dean shared his love with six grandchildren, Travis (Bryan) Coulter, Casey (Diana) Coulter, Kirk (Lanie) Goslee, Shandi (Brian) Tippett, Kyle Even and Matthew (Danielle) Even; 11 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandsons.&nbsp;

Dean's wry wit and sarcastic barbs will be missed by those who knew and loved him. If Dean referred to you as a "Dingbat", consider yourself among his favorites.

William Leroy “Bill” Young, 83, of Gladstone, MO passed away June 26, 2023.

He was born on June 7, 1940, to William Robert and Marion Young in Bethany, MO. Bill grew up in North Kansas City and graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1958.

On June 12, 1965, he was united in marriage to Alice Thornton. After their marriage they lived in Gladstone, MO where they made their home. Alice passed away on September 27, 2021.&nbsp;

Bill worked as a real estate agent with his wife Alice for over 35 years in the Kansas City area. He loved spending the holidays being Santa Clause for the children for several different organizations in the area. Bill was an avid OU Sooners football fan and loved his grandkids.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Bill and Alice spent most of their life in the Nazarene Church and were involved in the Layman League and Marriage Enrichment Ministry.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Young; his parents Bill and Marion Young; his brother Timothy Young; and his sister Victoria Albin.

Bill is survived by his son, Jeff Young and wife Amy; grandchildren Campbell, True, and Brody; Goddaughter Angela Davis and husband Mark; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. with Funeral Services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1st at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Smithville.
