Missouri residents can receive a free COVID-19 test today in
downtown St. Joseph.

St. Joseph city officials say the City of St. Joseph Health
Department is partnering with Northwest Health Services to offer the free
testing from 2pm until 7pm at the parking garage across from Civic Arena.

Two hundred sixty residents have pre-registered for the event
and will be given priority.

The city issued the following guidelines:

Free COVID-19 testing today in St. Joseph

Fire engulfed a semi tractor-trailer on I-29 south of St.
Joseph early this morning, prompting first a caution for motorists, then a re-routing
of traffic into the city.

The truck driver escaped injury and was able to uncouple the
tractor from the trailer before flames overcame the entire trailer, destroying
six new vehicles aboard.

State Highway Patrol spokesman, Sergeant Jake Angle, says the
accident could have been much worse, but the driver stopped and got away from
the fire before being injured.

The fire apparently started shortly after five o’clock this
morning when a rear wheel bearing caught fire in the back of the trailer around
Platte City as the truck traveled north. The semi pulled over near mile marker
32 at the Dearborn exit. By that time, the trailer was fully engulfed.

Northbound I-29 traffic was re-routed for a time while
emergency crews responded to the accident.

🎥 Flames engulf semi, cause re-routing of I-29 traffic south of St. Joseph

BROWN COUNTY —A Kansas man avoided injury just before 3:30p.m. Monday in Brown County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Air Tractor piloted by Colton Joseph Callaway, 24, Cummings, was taking off northbound from the&nbsp; Hiawatha Municipal Airport when the aircraft failed to take off successfully.

It crashed sitting upright in a field just north of the runway.

Callaway was not injured. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

UPDATE -&nbsp;A section of Andrew County U.S. Route 59 from Route CC to U.S. Route 71 will now remain closed through the morning of Friday, June 12. 

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation began making repairs to the roadway Monday, June 8, after hot temperatures caused a pavement blow up. Due to predicted inclement weather, crews have delayed the concrete replacement and expect to reopen the roadway the morning of June 12. 

A section of Andrew County U.S. Route 59 from Route CC to U.S. Route 71 is now closed after hot temperatures caused a section of pavement to blow up. 

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation began making repairs to the roadway Monday afternoon, but anticipate the roadway to remain closed through Wednesday, June 10 in order to replace the concrete.

According to MoDOT, pavement blow-up occurs when the roadway surface expands at a crack or joint where moisture has seeped in. The crack weakens the pavement and the heat causes the pavement to buckle and warp. The roadway will remain closed around-the-clock for the safety of travelers.

Motorists will need to use an alternate route during the closure.

Buchanan County and St. Joseph health officials now report 748
cases of COVID-19.

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce reports 12,569 people have been tested in Buchanan County. The county continues
to report two deaths.

Mosaic Life Care has tested 7,498 with
376 testing positive. Eleven patients are now being treated at the St. Joseph hospital;
one is being treated in the Albany hospital. There are 34 tests pending.

Andrew County reports 33 cases of coronavirus.

The Missouri Department of Health reports 14,553 cases overall with 809 deaths.

In Kansas, health officials report 10,393 cases with 232 deaths.

The Associated Press reports a state document says the Lansing Correctional Facility is largest single source of Kansas′10,393 coronavirus cases, followed by a Tyson Foods meatpacking plant near Garden City. The Kansas City Star obtained the Kansas public health report on the outbreak from Columbia University’s Brown Institute for Media Innovation, which has been gathering government documents related to the coronavirus from around the country.  The confidential report lists details of every outbreak in the state as of May 19. The Lansing prison is linked to at least 846 cases of the virus and six deaths as of May 19. The Tyson plant had 571 virus cases and one death.

water main break in Mound City has forced the shut down of that water main and
forced the city to issue a boil order which will remain in effect until June 11th.

Mound
City officials says work to repair the water main will affect 6th Street
to Nebraska Street and South; all of Route E, and State Street.

affected could experience low or no water service.

of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.&nbsp; Remake ice cubes with water that has been
boiled.

dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in
clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per
gallon of water.

4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Water
used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled.&nbsp; Supervision of children is necessary while
bathing or using backyard pools so water is not ingested.&nbsp; Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish

Boil order issued for Mound City

A St. Joseph financial advisor says investors need to pause and
think before they do anything in these volatile financial times.

COVID-19 has shaken the national economy, and initially, sent
the markets into a freefall.

Nick Gertsema with Gertsema Wealth Advisors says panic does
nobody any good.

“My number one tip would be breathe,” Gertsema tells St. Joseph
Post. “Take a deep breath. There’s a lot of panic. There’s a lot of fear. There’s
a lot of irrational thinking. But panic and fear are not investment strategies.”

Gertsema doesn’t necessarily say investors should simply stay
the course. He says investors need to take a long, hard look at their plan and
adjust if necessary. But he says the economy will bounce back, the stock
markets will regain their footing, and those who stick to their plan will
profit.

Emotions can rise and fall with the Stock Market. Gertsema advises
this isn’t the time to give in to your emotions.

“Emotion causes you to do the wrong thing at the wrong time
for the wrong reasons,” according to Gertsema. “Sometimes, when you see
volatility in the market place, your first thought is I need to make a trade, I
need to change something, I need to make an adjustment. And then, sometimes
action for the sake of action may be more detrimental to the portfolio than
helpful.”

Gertsema says the negative impact COVID-19 restrictions had on
the economy rival many past recessions, but adds this economic downturn is
different. Gertsema says the 2011 recession was an event-triggered recession.

“What we’re looking at now is different just because with
COVID-19, we don’t have a firm understanding of when we’re going to be done
with it or the damage that it’s done,” Gertsema says. “I mean, historically, we
went from the lowest unemployment in 50 years to the highest unemployment in 80
in roughly two months.”

Financial advisor cautions against giving in to emotions during market turmoil

A boil advisory has been issued by the Dekalb County Water
District due to an 8-inch water main break.

Cities affected include Stewartsville, Clarksdale and

The vehicle crossed the centerline and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle traveled off the road, struck a post and rolled.

Holt EMS transported Collins to Liberty Hospital. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Missouri woman hospitalized after rollover accident

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The following is a list of general highway maintenance and construction work the Missouri Department of Transportation has planned in the Northwest Missouri region for the week of June 8 – 14.

All road closures and planned roadwork may be viewed on the Traveler Information Map at&nbsp;<a href="http://traveler.modot.org/map/" target="_blank">http://traveler.modot.org/map/</a>.

Inclement weather may cause schedule changes in some of the planned work. There may also be moving operations throughout the region such as pothole patching, mowing, striping, signal work, etc., in addition to the work mentioned below.

Interstate 29 – Bridge replacement project over Hopkins Creek and Route T (mile marker 58-60) through January 2021. Traffic will remain head-to-head in the northbound lanes through early August. A 14-foot width restriction is in place. These bridges are included in Gov. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state.

Route 48 –&nbsp;CLOSED&nbsp;for a bridge replacement project over Agee Creek through mid-August. This bridge is included in Gov. U.S. Route 59 – Culvert replacement at 120th Street, June 8. Access to and from 120th Street will be prohibited during the work.

Routes B, C, and AA – Pothole patching, June 8 – 12

U.S. Route 169 – Scrub seal project from Route FF to the Clay County line through mid-June

Route 6 – Resurfacing project from just east of Route AC (Riverside Road) to Route 31 (DeKalb County) through mid-June. Traffic will be narrowed to one lane and a pilot car will guide motorists through the work zone. A 10.5-foot width restriction is in place.

I-29 – Guardrail repairs in preparation for a resurfacing project from south of Route O to the Platte County line through mid-October. The resurfacing project is scheduled to start in August and run through mid-October.

Route H – Concrete replacement from Mid-Buchanan High School west to Route 371, June 8 – 9. Temporary traffic signals will guide motorists through the work zone.

Route 116 – Drainage work at SW 46th Road, June 8 – 10

I-229 and U.S. Route 36 – Pothole patching, June 8 – 11

U.S. Route 36 – Resurfacing project in the westbound lanes from the Livingston County line to Route 13 through early July. This includes a 14-foot width restriction.

Route 13 – Bridge rehabilitation project over U.S. Route 36 in Hamilton through July. The bridge will remain narrowed until repairs are complete. Westbound U.S. Route 36 will be reduced to one lane under the bridge during daylight hours.

Route Z –&nbsp;CLOSED until further notice&nbsp;from Route C to County Road 217 due to damage caused by a roadway slide

Route C –&nbsp;CLOSED&nbsp;at the Branch of Turkey Creek Bridge due to damage from flooding. The project to replace the bridge was part of the March 2019 letting and was awarded to Gene Haile Excavating, Inc. The contractor plans to begin work June 15 and continue through October.

U.S. Route 24 – Resurfacing and shoulder improvement project from approximately 2 miles west of DeWitt to Route 5 in Keytesville through June. Flaggers and a pilot car will direct motorists through the work zone. A 12-foot width restriction is in place.

I-35 – Resurfacing project from the Clay County line to just north of Route 116 through mid-June

I-35 – Pavement repair in preparation for a resurfacing project from the DeKalb County line to Shoal Creek near Exit 48 through late June. The resurfacing project is scheduled to begin June 22 and run through early September. This includes an 11-foot width restriction and may include around-the-clock lane closures.

Route NN –&nbsp;CLOSED&nbsp;for bridge maintenance at the Castille Creek Bridge from Route K to Northwest Bethany Church Road, June 8 – 12, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily

Planned road work for northwest Missouri, June 8 - 14

MERCER COUNTY — Two people were injured in a crash just after 4 a.m. Saturday in Mercer County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Polaris Ranger driven by a 16-year-old boy from Indianola, IA, was southbound on Caribbean Avenue three miles west of Mercer.

The ATV traveled off the road, struck a ditch, overturned and caught fire.

A private vehicle transported the driver to MercyOne West Des Moines Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Mercer County Ambulance transported a passenger Jonathan D. Akes, 18, Des Moines, to Wayne County Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The MSHP did not report if they were wearing helmets.

2 teens hospitalized after ATV crash, fire

HARRISON COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just before 6 a.m. Saturday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1982 Suzuki motorcycle driven by David M. Peters, 29, New Hampton, was eastbound on U.S. 136 three miles west of Bethany.

The motorcycle struck a deer in the road. NTA ambulance transported Peters to Harrison County Community Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. According to the crash report, Peters was wearing a helmet.

The United Way Reading Adventure is canceled this year because of COVID-19, so the United Way of Greater St. Joseph came up with another way volunteers can help.

United Way&nbsp;Director of Community Investment&nbsp;Jodi Bloemker says they have a lot of donated books from the community that they give out to kids to build home libraries and an idea grew from there.

"What if we got our volunteers and community members to make bookmarks or encouraging notes that can be put in these books that are then going to go out to kids throughout the summer," Bloemker says. "Just little notes to encourage the students to keep reading, like, 'You're doing a great job,' 'Read this,' something like that that's encouraging, it's positive and it let's them know that somebody cares about them. It also gives the volunteers something to do to be involved."

Bloemker says they would like to collect around a thousand bookmarks and notes by June 12th to distribute with books through Second Harvest Community Food Bank’s No Hunger Summer feeding sites as well as several child care centers.

"Kids get to pick out a book to take home, they get to keep the book, help build their home libraries and also receive that encouraging note from a volunteer," Bloemker says.

Making bookmarks encourages creativity, but Bloemker says there are a few guidelines.

"Some of these will go out to smaller children, so please don't put any buttons or choking hazards on it as well as, like, glitter can get all the books so we don't want to hurt anything like that," Bloemker says. "But really, as long as you've got paper and some crayons or marker, you can easily make a few bookmarks."

Bookmarks and notes can be mailed to United Way at P.O. Box 188, St. Joseph, MO 64502, porch pickups can be arranged by calling (816) 364-2381 or items can be delivered to the Take A Book Tuesday mailbox located outside the United Way front entrance at 118 S. 5th Street.

United Way requesting handmade bookmarks for summer reading program

DEKALB COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30a.m. Friday in DeKalb County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Volvo semi driven by Ali E. Muxamednooriye, 53, Des Moines, was southbound on Interstate 35 two miles north of Cameron.

The vehicle traveled into the median and returned to the road. The driver overcorrected and the semi overturned. The vehicle skidded off the west shoulder of the interstate.

Cameron ambulance transported&nbsp;Muxamednooriye to Cameron Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Muxamednooriye, 53, Des Moines, was southbound on Interstate 35 two miles north of Cameron.The vehicle traveled into the median and returned to the road. The driver overcorrected and the semi overturned. The vehicle skidded off the west shoulder of the interstate.Cameron ambulance transported&nbsp;Muxamednooriye to Cameron Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Two drop-off sites are available to St. Joseph residents
cleaning up after two evenings of thunderstorms left a lot of destruction in
their wake.

One is located in the field north of the Bill McKinney
Softball Complex at Heritage Park on Waterworks Road. The second site is
located at the parking lot on Southwest Parkway across the street from Bode Ice
Arena.

The City of St. Joseph has established guidelines for using
the drop-off sites:

• Debris may be dropped off
beginning today at noon.

• The last date for drop-off at
these locations is August 1.

• Commercial companies may not
use the drop-off sites.

• Only residents of St. Joseph
are allowed to drop off storm debris. 

The landfill is not providing free storm debris disposal. If
residents take storm debris to the landfill, they will be charged. There will
be no curbside pick-up of storm debris.

Roadways closed after the storms should all be open by Monday,
according to the city. Property owners are responsible for removing debris from

An expected warm and dry summer has the Missouri River forecast on an average path for 2020. Water releases from Gavins Point Dam will remain at 33,000 cubic feet per second in June, which is about average, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.

St. Joseph city officials say St. Joseph Transit will resume
normal bus service on Monday, after service being altered due to COVID-19
concerns.

Social distancing measures will remain in place. The cleaning
and sanitizing of buses, stops, and transfer stations will remain in effect.

Buchanan County reports 740 total COVID-19 cases

ATCHISON COUNTY —One person died just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday in Atchison County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Celia M. Fodor, 26, Atchison, was southbound on U.S. 59 Highway at Henry Street in Atchison.

The motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line, left the roadway,&nbsp; continued through a yard and went airborne through a window of an abandoned building at 1600 U.S.59 Highway.
