Buchanan Co. reports 1,165 total COVID-19 cases, 14 COVID-19 patients at Mosaic

Anyone who ordered Chick-fil-A on August 7th in St. Joseph was part of helping flood victims in south St. Joseph.

Chick-fil-A St. Joseph donated 50% of sales from August 7th to flood relief efforts and presented a check for $10,000 to InterServ on Friday.&nbsp;

“We see a lot of destruction and devastation down there and that’s going to continue,” says Randy Sharp, InterServ Director of Operations. “This money will help us provide for construction materials and things like that. Later on, there will be some long term development of a plan for some folks that can’t return. We’ve done housing for a lot of folks already that have been relocated because they can’t go back or because they were renters. So all of those things, the community has funded and this money will help us continue to do those things.”

Sharp says they heard from Chick-fil-A that there were some first-time customers that came to order food on August 7th.

“That’s just awesome for the business and for the community to get people out to know that St. Joe’s got a lot to offer and that the whole of St. Joe is supporting the folks that were flooded out on the south side,” Sharp says.

Chick-fil-A St. Joseph owner/operator Ruthie Seitz says August 7th ended up being their highest sales day.&nbsp;

“The community response was overwhelming,” Seitz says. “Guests were just very engaged and very excited to be able to help their community and get some great food at the same time.”

InterServ receives $10,000 donation for flood relief efforts in south St. Joseph

KINGSTON, Mo. (AP) — Attorneys for a Missouri man accused of killing two brothers from Wisconsin are seeking to have two charges of abandoning a corpse dismissed in the case.

Garland Nelson, of Braymer, is facing the death penalty in the deaths of 24-year-old Justin Diemel and 35-year-old Nicholas Diemel, of Shawano County, Wisconsin. They disappeared after visiting Nelson's farm in July 2019 and their burned remains were later found in Missouri and Nebraska.

Nelson has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

His attorneys wrote in a court motion that two charges of abandoning a corpse filed against Nelson should be dropped. They argue a person charged with murder cannot also be charged with abandoning the corpse of the alleged murder victim without violating his constitutional rights.

Prosecutors argue Nelson could have followed Missouri law by anonymously reporting where the brothers’ bodies were located.

Nelson’s next court date has not been scheduled because of COVID-19 restrictions. He is asking to appear in person at all court hearings and his defense team is seeking to meet with him in person at the Caldwell County Jail where Nelson is being held.

Move-in day for students at Northwest Missouri State University is Friday and businesses in Maryville are cautiously optimistic about the expected uptick in business.

Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lily White says Maryville’s economic downtime is normally during the summer when college students are not in town. This year, that summer downtime started in March when students did not come back from spring break due to COVID-19.

“We saw, definitely a downturn, especially during the time that we had our mandated closure… but during that time especially, ‘shop local’ was something that all of our citizens were touting very loudly,” White says. “Some of our restaurants had to expand their phone lines to keep up with the number of carry-out calls they were getting. Our retail certainly suffered, but we’re also fortunate in that a lot of our retail had already worked to be online, so they didn’t suffer nearly as much as we saw the national average suffering.”&nbsp;

White says locally, unemployment peaked in April around 9%, still under the state and national average, and has since dropped to 5.1%. Their normal numbers typically hover around 3%.

Northwest football games typically draw big crowds and business to Maryville. White says things are still up in the air about football games and other sports and how that could affect businesses.

“Our businesses are still pivoting, they are not out of the woods, but we’ll have more answers after the college students get back as far as how our businesses are relating to that.”

White says after not having students in town for about six months, Maryville is excited to welcome them back, even though things are going to be different for everyone.

“We’re kind of in that, seconds before you hear, ‘3-2-1, go’ at a race, hoping that the race will still happen the way it normally does,” White says. “So we’re being very cautious as far as, we need these masks to work, we need the college students to come into town knowing that the mask mandate is a thing and that they are a huge part of our population that are going to have some control over how they respond to the mask mandate and also the social distancing side of it. But we’re also really excited to get that economic part back.”

Fall classes at Northwest begin Wednesday.

Maryville businesses looking forward to students returning

DEKALB COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 6:30p.m. Thursday in DeKalb County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Jeep Compass driven by a 15-year-old girl from Weatherby was westbound on Ketcham Road three miles south of Maysville.

 The vehicle traveled through an uncontrolled intersection, traveled off the west side of Hedge Road and struck a ditch.

A passenger identified as a 13-year-old girl from Weatherby was transported to Cameron Regional Medical Center. The driver was not injured. The 13-year-old was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

 The driver was in a working vehicle spreading gravel. As the driver turned south onto Tioga Road, the load shifted and the truck turned on its side..

A private vehicle transported&nbsp;Blake to the Mosaic in St. Joseph. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Two houses were damaged, but no one was injured in an overnight fire in St. Joseph.

According to St. Joseph Fire Inspector Mindy Andrasevits, the fire started around 11:15 Wednesday night in the upstairs bathroom of what appears to be a vacant house at 2009 Mulberry Street. The fire also caused an estimated $33,000 in damage to an occupied house next door. Four people made it out of that house safely. 

Andrasevits says it appears the fire was intentionally set, but the cause is still under investigation. The estimated damage to the house where the fire started is $30,000.

St. Joseph Police responded to a call reporting shots fired shortly before 11 p.m. Officers recovered shell casings and found a house had been hit by gunshots.

Chillicothe EMS transported Richardson to Hedrick Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

Everything from school picture day for online students to the possibility of a COVID-19 case are things the teachers and staff are preparing for in the Savannah R3 School District.

Savannah students were given the option of attending in-person classes or online. School District Communications Coordinator Jess Gillett says about 15% of students enrolled in the virtual option. There are about 2,300 students in the district.

Gillett says feedback from parents and teachers has covered a lot of subjects.

“Lots of concerns that there’s no normal anymore, so everyone is concerned about everything, even down to how are our kids going to eat lunch at school? There’s a possibility that’s going to be different,” Gillett says. “Really our community has been very supportive, just asking a lot of questions.”

Gillett says the biggest question on everyone’s mind is what’s going to happen when the district has its first COVID-19 case.

“There’s a good possibility it’s going to happen, and the biggest thing that we can tell our parents is that we are going to react calmly and that we do have a plan in place and that we’re partnering with the Andrew County Health Department," Gillett says. "They will guide us through that and just because we have one positive case, doesn’t mean we’ll have to shut down the whole district.”

Gillett says they put plans into practice in the past few months when an athlete tested positive and someone who attended graduation ceremonies later tested positive.

“With each scenario we learned some things that either we were doing ok with and definitely some things that we can do better,” Gillett says. “Really, that, in some ways has made us feel more prepared for the fall because we’ve gone through it a little bit and it makes us that much more confident in the procedures that we have in place.”

As the first day of school gets closer, the district will be hosting a back to school night virtually this year.

“We should have bus routes ready, some of that normal back-to-school stuff, otherwise, a lot of it’s just information,” Gillett says. “Our teachers are all working really hard on virtual tours of their classrooms and we’ve had several teachers… they’ve made like a little virtual classroom that looks just like their real classroom so the kids can kind of explore that. So it’s very interactive, it’s not just, ‘Here’s a PDF with a bunch of information on it.’ I think it’ll be something that families enjoy and that kind of helps get the kids excited about going back.” 

Virtual Back to School night is August 17th and the first day of school for the <a href="https://www.savannahr3.com/">Savannah R-III School District</a> is August 24th.&nbsp;

As Savannah R3 prepares for classes, many things are going virtual

Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney Ron Holliday announced the filing of a Second-Degree Murder charge in connection with a <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/9af4af70-ef4c-4afd-b000-4f1662385733">fatal crash Monday afternoon</a>.

According to the Prosecuting Attorney's office, 19-year-old Jason E. Clements has been charged in connection with the fatal crash near 24th and Jules Street Monday afternoon that resulted in the death of a 38-year-old male.

The State alleges the defendant was operating a stolen motor vehicle in a reckless manner at the intersection which caused the death of the victim.

Trenton man hospitalized after vehicle strikes embankment

Live music will be on the Parkway in St. Joseph this summer as Parties on the Parkway returns for a shortened season.

Kristi Bailey with the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce says three different bands will be featured on three different parts of the Parkway on August 13th, August 27th and September 10th.&nbsp;

“Bands are excited to be able to play,” Bailey tells St. Joseph Post. “A lot of them, of course, have had gigs cancel, they haven’t been making their normal income… so all three were definitely eager to take part.”

Parties on the Parkway is typically held once a month, May through September, but with the pandemic, Bailey says organizers put Parties on pause until they were sure they could put on events and what safety measures would need to be in place.

“There have been a couple other outdoor events that have been happening… and they seem to have been able to operate well," Bailey says. "Some people that are nervous about those things are just staying home, while others that feel like that can spread out or listen to music safely have been coming out.”

Bailey says things will be a little different at Parties on the Parkway this year.

“We’re going to have hand sanitizing stations and extra hand washing stations. One person was killed when a truck driver ran a stop sign in St. Joseph Monday afternoon.

According to the St. Joseph Police Department, a red pickup ran a stop sign at 24th and Jules and hit a passenger vehicle, killing the driver. The name of the victim hasn’t been released yet.

Police say the driver of the truck is in custody.

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred at a residence in the 300 block Parallel Street in Atchison and are looking for a suspect.

In the early morning hours on August 6, a 45-year-old victim was at home and sustained injuries from the intruder, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

The victim was familiar with who the suspect was. Police are not certain what vehicle the suspect was in on August 6, but in the past he was known to drive an older model black Toyota 4 Runner with Pennsylvania tags.

The victim sustained injuries from being struck with an object that was in the suspect's hand. The victim was treated and released from hospital care.

Police have identified and are searching for a 30-year-old male suspect. A case file has been presented to the County Attorney’s Office for prosecution, according to Wilson.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Saturn driven by Zayla M. Carlson, 17, Burlington Junction, was southbound on U.S. 71 five miles south of Burlington Junction.

The driver swerved to miss another vehicle making a left turn. The vehicle traveled off the road and overturned onto its top.

Nodaway County ambulance transported Carlson to Mosaic Life Care in Maryville. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Missouri teen hospitalized after car overturns

A two-year-old girl was killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday afternoon in St. Joseph.

According to St. Joseph Police Capt. Jeff Wilson, two other people were hit by gunshots during the drive-by in the area of 20th and Messanie.

Wilson says a man in his 20s was treated and released from the hospital and a woman is being treated at the hospital, but is listed in stable condition.

No arrests have been made yet. The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 238-TIPS or to call the police department at (816) 271-4777.

Things are starting to return to normal at the St. Jo Frontier
Casino, at least as normal as post-coronavirus restrictions can be.

And while the casino is welcoming back patrons and slowly
offering all that it offered prior a required shutdown, it is working to maintain
safety while operating during the lingering coronavirus pandemic.

Meals are being offered once again, but no buffet.

Chef Victor Luna says his employees have been trained well on
how best to sanitize the kitchen each day with tables kept separate to maintain
social distance.

“Right now, the feeling that I get from all our employees and
customers is that we are doing the right thing to keep everybody safe,” Luna
tells St. Joseph Post.

At first, the casino only offered a grab and go variety of
foods, serving about 15 a day. Now the Fireside Bar and Grill, Winners Grill, and
Full House are all open, according to Roxanne Miller with the casino.

“We no longer have the buffet at this time,” Miller says. “And
that’s basically for the safety of our patrons. We like to keep the social
distancing still in place. So, we have moved to an a la carte menu.”

Luna says that he and his staff had to devise a new menu
post-buffet, offering such delicacies as crab legs and prime rib. As many as 100
patrons eat at the casino now.

Luna says it appears patrons are becoming more comfortable
with dining at the casino.

“The beginning was quite challenging, because people were not
very comfortable coming in a restaurant setting,” Luna says. “But as they progressed
and see how we take care of the customer when they come in, they feel more
confident coming in. Now they are getting more comfortable about coming in and
sitting down and seeing what we’re doing.”

Miller says, all things considered, the casino is doing well,
post restrictions.

“We were able to call back our employees and our regular
patrons have returned to the casino,” Miller points out, while adding some just
won’t feel comfortable returning for a while. “We’ve pivoted with the times and
we’re doing new things to keep the property clean. We just are making
adjustments just like any company.”
