ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The following is a list of general highway maintenance and construction work the Missouri Department of Transportation has planned in the Northwest Missouri region for the week of Aug. 10 – 16.

All road closures and planned roadwork may be viewed on the Traveler Information Map at&nbsp;<a href="http://traveler.modot.org/map/" target="_blank">http://traveler.modot.org/map/</a>.

Inclement weather may cause schedule changes in some of the planned work. There may also be moving operations throughout the region such as pothole patching, mowing, striping, signal work, etc., in addition to the work mentioned below.

Route 48 –&nbsp;CLOSED&nbsp;for a bridge replacement project over Agee Creek. The bridge is expected to reopen Aug. 11. This bridge is included in Gov. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state. I-29 –&nbsp;Southbound on-ramp CLOSED&nbsp;for shoulder work at Route K, Aug. 10, 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Route Y –&nbsp;CLOSED&nbsp;for a culvert replacement from Route U to County Road 7, Aug. 11, 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

I-29 –&nbsp;Northbound off-ramp CLOSED&nbsp;for concrete replacement to I-229 northbound (Exit 43), Aug. 12 at 6 a.m. to Aug. 13 at 7 a.m. This will be an overnight closure.

Route 190 – Bridge rehabilitation project over the Thompson River. This bridge is included in Gov. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state. A 10-foot width restriction is in place. The bridge rehabilitation project is expected to continue through late November. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state. When the bridge reopens to one-lane traffic on Aug. 15, an 11.5-foot width restriction will be in place. Planned road work for northwest Missouri, Aug. 10 - 16

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a robbery and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 3p.m. Saturday police officers responded to a robbery that had occurred at Cricket Wireless at 121 South 8th Street in Atchison, according to police chief Mike Wilson.

 A lone suspect later identified as&nbsp;Mark A. Stephens, 26,&nbsp; Melbourne Florida, entered the store and ordered a clerk to get him iPhones from a locked box as he showed the clerk a handgun he had in his waist. 

Stephens also grabbed phone accessories before fleeing the scene to a nearby parked vehicle, according to Wilson.

Officers were able to obtain a vehicle description that was broadcast to area law enforcement. The Nissan SUV with a Missouri license tag was determined to be stolen from the Kansas City area. 

The vehicle was located at 4:30PM by the Missouri Highway Patrol on the shoulder of I-29 near the Camden Point exit in Platte County. 

Troopers took Stephens into custody and he is being held in the Platte County jail for Atchison Police on a requested charge of aggravated robbery, according to Wilson.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Buick Rendezvous driven by Donaven Dejong, 18, Cameron, was southbound on Route BB one mile south of Winston.

The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road, returned to the road and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and overturned. Daviess County EMS transported Dejong to Cameron Regional Medical Center.

He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Missouri teen hospitalized after SUV overturns

NODAWAY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30a.m. Saturday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Chevy pickup driven by Drew W. Wiederholt, 17, Ravenwood, was on Route EE three miles east of Maryville.

The pickup traveled off the road, struck a ditch and came to rest on its passenger side.

Nodaway County ambulance transported Wiederholt to Mosaic in Maryville. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

NODAWAY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30a.m. Saturday in Nodaway County.The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Chevy pickup driven by Drew W. The St. Joseph City Council approved another emergency ordinance to help the Southside as clean up and recovery efforts from flooding last month continue.

St. Joseph Mayor Bill McMurray says the first emergency ordinance was for $22,000 for dumpsters.

“We had about 33 dumpsters and we quickly went through the 22,000,” McMurray tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “Tons and tons of stuff taken out to the landfill.”

McMurray says they approved another $30,000 this week, which is being taken out of the Cell Phone Fund.

Reports in the past few weeks from the Red Cross have said over 200 homes were impacted by the flooding, with about 130 of those seriously damaged and one completely destroyed.&nbsp;

“The Baptist Disaster Relief and Team Rubicon and others are mucking out the houses, pulling the stuff out of the basement, putting it in the dumpsters, yanking out the drywall. Then it’s all going to have to be put back, redone,” McMurray says. “We’re going to have a long recovery period from this.”

McMurray says he’s sent a letter to Governor Mike Parson, talked to Senator Roy Blunt’s office and most of the local legislators to see if there’s any opportunity for federal or state funds to help with recovery.&nbsp;

“Everybody’s trying to help as much as they can, but this just galls me that we’re not big enough, apparently, for this to be a federal disaster or a state disaster, so that cuts off the funding,” McMurray says. “It’s pretty big if it’s your house that’s flooded, but apparently in total, collectively, it’s not considered big enough.”

McMurray says help is coming from local sources and there’s been several volunteer teams helping with various recovery efforts.

“There are volunteers coming in from other places, I’ve talked to some college kids who were just helping out. Not only our local volunteers, not only our city employees and county employees, but also all these other volunteers are coming in, this is a group effort,” McMurray says. “Unfortunately, we’re not getting any help to speak of from state or fed, so this is going to be a local effort and I think we’re up to it. So far indications are very good that we’re going to get through this together.”

HARRISON COUNTY—One person died in a crash just after 5p.m. Thursday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2012 GMC Yukon driven by Lesa K. Gard, 55, Bethany, was eastbound on U.S. 136 two miles west of Bethany.

The SUV crossed the center line and struck the drivers side of a westbound 2011 GMC 3500 driven by Lucas A. Holcomb, 28, Albany, then struck a&nbsp; 2013 Buick Verano driven by Diane R. Gibson, 68, New Hampton head-on.

Gibson was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Roberson Polley Funeral Home.

Lifeflight transported Gard to Truman Medical Center. Holcomb was not injured. All three were properly restrained at time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

Woman, 4-year-old from St. Joe hospitalized after crash

The United Way of Greater St. Joseph is helping get information out on how volunteers can help with flood recovery and about resources for residents affected by the flooding.

United Way President Kylee Strough says this week, shower and laundry trailers were set up at Lake Contrary School.

“We know that for the last week or two some people have been having to use laundromats or take cold showers because their water heater was destroyed through the flood, things like that. So we hope this helps some families with their recovery,” Strough says.

Residents can visit the trailers between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to shower and drop their laundry off anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Strough says they've also been hearing from a lot of people wanting to help flood victims, but are not sure how. Strough says there are multiple ways to volunteer from mucking out houses to serving food.

“There’s something for every skill level and every energy level and if volunteering is not a way that fits into your schedule to help, but you still want to do something, we encourage donations to Interserv and their Flood Relief Fund,” Strough says. “The dollars that go to Interserv are being used in a variety of ways to help individuals with those needs that may be unmet when we collaborate with all the rest of the resources in the community.”

Volunteer opportunities include house cleanups, which are being coordinated by Team Rubicon. Clean up starts after a volunteer briefing every morning at 7:30 a.m. at the Civic Arena. Volunteers can enter at the 3rd Street door. They must be at least 18 years old and must wear boots and long pants.

Anyone wanting to help with&nbsp;home rebuilding and repairing can contact St. Joseph Habitat for Humanity at 816-279-2552, ext. 4 to register as a volunteer.

Mosaic Life Care has now tested more than 19,000 area
residents for the coronavirus with slightly more than 900 testing positive for
COVID-19.

Mosaic reports 10 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in St. Joseph
on Thursday

St. Joseph Mosaic President Dr. Davin Turner says very few
have had to be placed in the ICU unit and fewer still have had to be placed on
ventilators.

“Since COVID has hit, we did have that early phase where we
had more of those patients ending up on ventilators, but the percentage of
those patients still was very low,” Turner tells reporters. “And now we’re
seeing that number even lower, which is reassuring that we’re not seeing the
respiratory complications as severe.”

The official statistics released by Mosaic Thursday morning disclose
Mosaic has tested 19,449 area residents in its network, which includes
Maryville and Albany. Mosaic reports 901 tested positive with 10 hospitalized
in St. Joseph as of Thursday morning. Mosaic is awaiting results from 211
tests.

Turner says the average hospital stay for a COVID patient is
11 days, but it varies widely.

“But we have had some folks in our hospital for over 40 days
with COVID and some even longer than that,” according to Turner. “So, there’s
some folks who stay in an extended period of time. Most are staying five to
seven days and being able to go home.”

The most COVID-19 patients hospitalized at one time totaled 21.

When the coronavirus pandemic became increasingly serious,
elective surgeries at Mosaic were rescheduled as the hospitals and clinics
prepared to battle COVID-19. Mosaic began building a COVID-19 ward. It
increased testing at hospital entrances and took other steps to prevent a
coronavirus spread in the various facilities.

The drop in income and rise in expenses took a toll on the bottom
line.

“Initially, right after March 17th, we were
generating $7 million less in revenue on a weekly basis and that is a rough
number,” Turner says.

Tuner says he is pleased with how Mosaic has handled the
pandemic so far, but adds a note of caution. Mosaic is keeping a close eye on
developments in Kansas City, which has seen an increase in cases.

Buchanan County COVID-19 cases top 1,100

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have a teen suspect in custody.

Just before 7:30p.m. Tuesday,&nbsp; police responded to a shots fired call in the 400 block North 5th Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike&nbsp; Wilson.

 Officers found a 17-year-old boy at the scene with a gunshot wound. EMS transported the teen to a hospital. 

It was determined that the shooting suspect had fled the area on foot, according to Wilson.

At 8:15p.m., officers located the 16-year-old suspect at a residence. He was taken into custody on requested charges of aggravated battery, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, and criminal use of a weapon. He was later transported to a juvenile detention facility.

According to investigators, both the victim and the suspect were on walking in the area of 5th and Parallel in Atchison. They were not walking together but a verbal altercation occurred as they were in the 400 block North 5th, according to Wilson. The suspect then shot the victim one time with a handgun.

Police recovered a handgun has been recovered during their investigation, according to Wilson.

Wilson did not release an update on the condition of the 17-year-old.

Police arrest 16-year-old for shooting in Atchison

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett has, in effect, won re-election in the Republican primary.

“It’s a great validation of the work that we’re doing for the community,” Puett tells St. Joseph Post. “It’s great when the community provides overwhelming support… that’s an outstanding feeling for the 100 plus men and women of the sheriff’s office serving the community.”

Puett's challenger, St. Joseph Police Sergeant Keith Dudley, says he feels good about his first time running for office.

"Had a lot of things going against me, you had the COVID, you had the flooding, you had civil unrest going on in the country," Dudley says. "There wasn’t a lot of opportunities for a lot of fundraising, but I did have a lot of great people supporting me. Not too bad against an incumbent."

Puett says campaigning during a pandemic was a different experience.&nbsp;

"It really has had an impact on being able to actually reach and contact people,” Puett says. “Not a lot of events, most of them were cancelled so it was really an odd year for candidates."

Puett says he plans to continue to work hard for the community and make it a better and safer place.

"We’re going to continue to engage with the community, listen to what their needs are and wants are and continue to try to do things better and work harder and continue doing the things we need to do to serve the community and do it with respect."

No Democrat filed for sheriff. Puett faces no opposition this November for his second term.

Students soon return to college campuses with university
administrators scrambling to ensure a safe environment in a time of pandemic.

Missouri Western State University interim President Elizabeth
Kennedy points out the university starts the fall semester early this year,
hoping to wrap up classes prior to Thanksgiving. Kennedy says plans have
centered on academics, housing, and safety.

“From the very beginning, we have worked with our faculty to
determine how best to deliver our educational content to meet the students’ needs
and maintain the academic rigor that we need to,” Kennedy tells an audience
gathered on the Northwest Missouri State University campus. “So, for example,
faculty have shared their preferences in terms of how they would like to
present their courses, whether online, hybrid, some model therein, or face to
face.”

Both Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph and
Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville have plans in place to keep
faculty, staff, and students safe during the upcoming fall semester.

Northwest Missouri President John Jasinski says college administrators
are having to digest a lot of data to decide how best to handle things.

“There will not be one measure that says yes, we’ll do this or,
no, we won’t do that,” Jasingski says. “It will really be a set of indicators

Kennedy says much work had gone into preparing the St. Joseph
campus for the return of students.

“I’m very cautiously optimistic,” Kennedy says. “We are living

second thought is I hope it’s good, because it is a very challenging
environment.”

Missouri Western begins its semester in about two weeks, which
is early, starting on the 17th. &nbsp;The university plans to wrap up fall classes
before Thanksgiving.

Kennedy points out the university starts the fall semester early this year,
hoping to wrap up classes prior to Thanksgiving. Kennedy says plans have
centered on academics, housing, and safety.“From the very beginning, we have worked with our faculty to
determine how best to deliver our educational content to meet the students’ needs
and maintain the academic rigor that we need to,” Kennedy tells an audience
gathered on the Northwest Missouri State University campus. “So, for example,
faculty have shared their preferences in terms of how they would like to
present their courses, whether online, hybrid, some model therein, or face to
face.”Both Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph and
Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville have plans in place to keep
faculty, staff, and students safe during the upcoming fall semester.Northwest Missouri President John Jasinski says college administrators

field to challenge the re-election of Congressman Sam Graves in November.

Ross won nearly 33-percent of the vote in Tuesday’s primary,
edging Ramona Farris, who suspended her campaign. Unofficial results show Ross
with 14-Thousand, 483 votes. Farris finished second with 11-thousand, 867

CALDWELL COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Caldwell County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Kenworth semi driven by Stanley W. Parker, 39, Oak Ridge, was eastbound on U.S. 36 one mile east of Cameron.

The semi lost the dual tires on the number 3 axel. The tires traveled across the median onto the westbound lanes and struck a westbound 1986 Ford Mustang driven by Jerry L. Graham, 72, Hamilton, head-on. The Mustang then traveled off the road and down an embankment.

Cameron EMS transported Graham to Cameron Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Parker was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
