Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank President Esther George says
the U.S. economy has made a remarkable recovery after the devastating blow dealt
it by the coronavirus pandemic.

“The economy has recovered in many respects,” George says. “So,
output, meaning the growth we have in the economy, is back from pre-pandemic
levels. Unemployment is coming down, rapidly, even though it hasn’t fully
recovered yet. That’s coming down. And demand is soaring. We have really strong
demand in our economy right now.”

George spoke to reporters after delivering the keynote address
at the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce 2021 Economic Summit on the Missouri
Western State University campus Friday.

George says the pandemic sent the economy into a freefall 18
months ago.

George says inflation has been more persistent than many
foresaw. She says the markets reacted favorably to the Fed tapering the asset
purchases it began at the depth of the pandemic-induced economic downturn,
because the Fed signaled its intentions early.

“And I think what we’ve learned is our communication is
important, to set expectations for the markets, to explain how we’re thinking
about the economy,” George says. “That, of course, is a conversation that
happens around a big table as we each present our views on how we do that. So,
communicating clearly about the next steps is going to be important.”

George refers to the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market
Committee (FOMC), which guides Fed monetary policy, primarily through asset purchases,
setting interest rates, and setting bank reserve requirements. Directors of the
regional Federal Reserve Banks, such as George, rotate as voting members of the
FOMC, though they provide input, voting or not. George becomes a voting member
again next year. The FOMC holds eight meetings each year.

George says the Federal Reserve acted appropriately during the
pandemic by buying assets and lowering interest rates to prop up the ailing
economy. She says now the Fed needs to back off; continue to taper asset
purchases and begin to discuss raising interest rates.

George says she doesn’t want to tighten financial conditions,
though.

“I do not want to derail the economy,” George says. “And that’s
why I’m arguing starting sooner rather than later with beginning to talk to the
public about when will we raise interest rates?”

George says interest rates will likely be raised at least
twice in the coming year.

KC Fed chief expects interest rate hike next year to temper inflation

KANSAS CITY— The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department&nbsp; investigating a homicide in the 1500 block of Walker Avenue have identified the victim as 24-year-old Emileigh N. Wilson of Atchison, according to a media release from police.

Just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday police were dispatched to the 1600 block of Walker Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas on the report of a shooting.

When they arrived, officers discovered an adult male with apparent gunshot wounds outside a residence, according to police. The man was then transported to an area hospital. He remains in critical but stable condition.

Police located Wilson who was deceased outside of a vehicle near 15th and Waverly.

The vehicle crossed the center of the road and struck a northbound 2010 Ford Expedition driven by Sarah B. Hanson, 41, Stewartsville, head-on. DeKalb-Clinton ambulance transported Hanson to Mosaic Life Care. Teague was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Ford F150 driven by Dale F. Myers, Jr. 47, Topeka,&nbsp;was traveling northeast on U.S. 59 Highway four miles north of Nortonville.

The pickup crossed the center line and into the path of southwest bound a 2014 Chevy Silverado driven by Paul H.&nbsp;Lanfermann II, 61, Atchison.

The Ford struck the Chevy in the side on the shoulder. After impact both vehicle traveled into the ditch and rolled.

EMS transported&nbsp;Lanfermann and a passenger Teresa M&nbsp;Lanfermann, 56, Atchison, to the hospital in Atchison. Myers and a passenger were not transported for treatment.&nbsp; All four were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The driver lost control of the vehicle. It crossed the median, traveled into the eastbound lanes and overturned. DeKalb County ambulance transported Parker to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Driver injured after semi, livestock trailer overturn

The president of the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank tells a
St. Joseph audience she doesn’t believe inflation is here to stay.

But, Esther George says the Federal Reserve cannot become
complacent and must act to help right an economy still trying to emerge from
the coronavirus pandemic.

George was the keynote speaker at the St. Joseph Chamber of
Commerce Economic Summit held on the Missouri Western State University campus.
George says the pandemic and our reaction to the pandemic threw the economy out
of balance.

“We have an economy where demand is outstripping supply today
and you all know from your basic Econ 101 when that happens you get rising
prices,” George says.

George characterizes the current economy as “tight,” a vast
improvement over the freefall it went into at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.
The federal government pumped trillions of dollars into the economy, fighting
COVID-19 as well as helping to shore up businesses rocked by the shutdowns of
March 2020 and individuals left without work.

George expects the economy to return to its pre-pandemic
level, eventually.

“The reason is those fiscal checks have gone out the door,”
George explains. “Last year, the PPP money has been dispersed and just the math
is that that money is gone. We will begin to see a step down in some of that
demand.”

The pandemic threw the economy out of balance as well,
shifting spending away from services and toward goods.

“People quit doing things like traveling. They quit going to
restaurants,” George says. &nbsp;“They quit
engaging in the kinds of services that were so prominent and they began to sit
behind their computers and starter buying stuff or going to Lowe’s or Home
Depot and buying things that would help remodel their homes.”

A big question looms over the recovering economy:&nbsp; is inflation a temporary or more permanent
concern?

George believes the 6% inflation rate which the country hasn’t
seen for years is a product of the ongoing effects of the pandemic and the slow
recovery from the deep recession it caused. The supply chain problems, the
tight labor market, the reluctance to return to leisure spending all
contribute.

George suggests the current spike in inflation will not last.
But, she does believe it could get out of hand if the Federal Reserve doesn’t
act promptly.

“Once the public begins to believe that inflation is there and
that prices tomorrow will be higher than they are today, it’s sets expectations
in motion for higher inflation,” according to George. “And, right now we see
that in many surveys that consumers are beginning to say I think inflation is
going to be here for three years.”

George says inflation pressures should ease once buying
patterns return to pre-pandemic levels. She says the tight labor market would
be helped by an increase in day care access which would allow women to return
to the workforce.

KC Fed President doesn't believe inflation is here to stay

Both Republican Congressmen representing northwest Missouri
and northeast Kansas voted against the $1.75 trillion Build Back Better bill
that squeaked to passage this morning in the U.S. House of Representative.

The House voted 220 to 213 to move the measure being pushed by
President Joe Biden to the Senate, after delaying the vote for weeks while House
Democratic leaders persuaded reluctant members to support the social spending
and climate initiative measure.

Northern Missouri Congressman Sam Graves and Eastern Kansas
Congressman Jake LaTurner also voted against the $1.2 trillion infrastructure
bill signed into law earlier by President Biden.

Graves, the ranking Republican on the House Transportation and
Infrastructure Committee, says the House passed an opportunity for a bipartisan
infrastructure package when Democratic leaders removed the bill from the
committee process.

“You know the sad thing about it is, is infrastructure is one
of the easiest things to pass in Congress, because infrastructure is something
that government should do and should do well,” Graves tells KFEQ/St. Joseph
Post.

Both Graves and LaTurner object to the price tag of the
infrastructure bill.

“For me, it’s really simple,” LaTurner tells KFEQ/St. Joseph
Post. “It needs to be about real infrastructure in a way that a normal, average
person would define real infrastructure and it has to be paid for.”

Graves says Republicans and Democrats on his committee had
moved close to an agreement on the Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act,
when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi intervened.

“When Speaker Pelosi took over the process it ended all
working together,” according to Graves.

“It went from about $400 billion or $350 to 400 billion up to
$1.2 trillion, added all these other things in it, and there’s no ‘pay for.’
There’s absolutely no ‘pay for,’” Graves says. “So, we’re just borrowing the
money. It’s too much. It has to end.”

That has spilled over to Graves’ assessment of the Build Back
Better legislation, which even though pared down from the original price tag of
$3.5 trillion still clocked in at $1.75 trillion. And Graves insists that doesn’t
reflect its cost.

“They’re creating a lot of new ‘quote-unquote’ temporary
programs,” Graves says. “Well, temporary programs never go away. They just
continue.”

As for LaTurner, he believes some Democrats got cold feet, due
to the cost of the bill, which delayed it coming to the floor for a vote.

“I suspect that more moderate Democrats, and there aren’t a lot
of those, but the more moderate Democrats have got to be looking at this and
thinking is something that is smart for me to do?”

LaTurner believes Democrats could pay a price at the polls.

“If you are a Democrat in a marginal district without question
you are very concerned about what happened in the Virginia governor’s race or
the New Jersey governor’s race,’ LaTurner says, referring to a Republican upset
in Virginia and a closer than expect race in New Jersy. “You realize that the
voters don’t support all of these progressive items.”

LaTurner says Congress cannot keep spending on the current
pace, because it is adding too much to the federal debt.

The Build Back Better bill faces an uncertain future in the
Senate.

Area Republican Congressmen stand against spending bills

St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Natalie
Redmond has been chosen as the new president, succeeding Patt Lilly who will
retire at the end of the year.

Redmond says she’s honored to become president after Lilly’s
long tenure.

“Patt hired me 16 years ago here at the Chamber of Commerce,
so it will be a celebration and a sad day at the Chamber when he leaves us
December 31st,” Redmond tells reporters during a news conference. “But
I know he won’t be very far. I know where he lives. And, it will be a new day
for the Chamber.”

Redmond came to the Chamber in 2005, first hired as Vice President,
Membership.

Redmond steps into the role as the coronavirus pandemic
continues to have a grip on the area economy. Redmond says she believes the
chamber navigated the difficulties of the pandemic well.

“But we do have some challenges and I don’t sugarcoat that,
but that’s why I was excited about this job,” Redmond says. “I didn’t want to
take the job if it didn’t have challenges.”

Chamber President Patt Lilly retires at the end of the year
after a 19-year tenure served during two separate periods.

Redmond has been chosen as the new president, succeeding Patt Lilly who will
retire at the end of the year.Redmond says she’s honored to become president after Lilly’s
long tenure.“Patt hired me 16 years ago here at the Chamber of Commerce,
so it will be a celebration and a sad day at the Chamber when he leaves us
December 31st,” Redmond tells reporters during a news conference. “But
I know he won’t be very far. I know where he lives. And, it will be a new day
for the Chamber.”Redmond came to the Chamber in 2005, first hired as Vice President,
Membership.Redmond steps into the role as the coronavirus pandemic
continues to have a grip on the area economy. Redmond says she believes the
chamber navigated the difficulties of the pandemic well.“But we do have some challenges and I don’t sugarcoat that,
but that’s why I was excited about this job,” Redmond says. “I didn’t want to
take the job if it didn’t have challenges.”Chamber President Patt Lilly retires at the end of the year
after a 19-year tenure served during two separate periods.

Savannah man faces murder charge in Union Star death

Missouri U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt says the election results earlier
this month, especially in the Virginia governor’s race, repudiates the claim by
Democrats that the 2020 elections handed them a mandate to change the direction
of the country.

“When there’s no evidence of that at all,” Blunt says. “The
Senate couldn’t be possibly closer at 50-50. Democrats in the House have the closest
margin Democrats have had in the House of Representatives in 170 years. And the
mandate for Biden, if there was one, was competency and moderation and the administration
currently appears to be showing neither of those things.”

Blunt, a Republican, says the upset victory by Republican
Glenn Youngkin over Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia’s governor race is
a very good sign for Republicans in 2022.

Blunt says the extremely low public opinion poll numbers for
President Joe Biden should serve as a warning for Democrats.

“I think they’ve dramatically overreached what voters wanted
to see happen at the federal level and there’s a price to be paid for that.”

A public opinion poll taken by Gallup last month indicated
only 42% of Americans approve of Biden’s presidency.

Inflation is a concern, according to Blunt, who says the
country has become concerned about the massive spending bills being pushed by Democrats
in Washington.

“This is the moment right now to try to pull back on those
things that drive inflation rather than toss more of them on the table just
like Democrats in the House are trying to do today,” according to Blunt.

Blunt supported the $1 trillion infrastructure bill signed by
President Biden this week. He opposes the $1.75 trillion dollar social spending
and climate initiative package Democrats have proposed as companion
legislation. Blunt fears the additional spending will fuel inflation, adding some
prices for meat have jumped by 20%.

“Families feel that 20% impact on their eating budget, that maybe
50% impact on their heating budget, and they know how much it costs to fill
their car up to get back and forth to work,” Blunt says.

Democrats have not been able to secure the votes needed to get
the larger spending bill through the House. They face an even tougher task in
the Senate, though Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer of New York, predicts the
package, officially called Build Back Better, will pass Congress before Christmas.

Early morning St. Joseph shooting leaves man wounded

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect once again on requested charges of failure to appear.

On Monday, police arrested Allison R. Blakley, 25, Rushville Missouri, on District and Municipal Court warrants for failure to appear in court, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Since February 0f 2019, police have arrested her four time for failure to appear, according to online jail records.

St. Joseph police worked three separate shootings in a
one-week period.

St. Joseph Police Chief Chris Connally says none of the
shootings are related.

“They all occurred in the city of St. Joseph,” Connally tells
host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “That’s their relationship.”

Connally says that in each of the three shootings, the victims
and the suspects knew each other. At least one of the victims refuses to press
charges.

“What we’re saying is some of same things we see in the bigger
cities is that a lot of people are settling things with firearms,” Connally
says. “A lot of firearms out there. We have no training standards and sometimes
people are settling these things in a way that is just not acceptable.”

On Friday, November 15th, 28-year-old Marcus Allen
was shot and killed during an afternoon confrontation on Union Street near 23rd.
Police believe the victim and suspect knew each other.

Three days later, on Monday the 8th, two people
were shot and wounded coming out of the Dollar General at 17th and
Messanie Street mid-morning. Both suffered what police described as
non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe the shooter had been waiting in
the store parking lot for the two to exit. Police are looking for a person of
interest.

A 17-year-old St. Joseph man, Chance Kelley, recently died of
wounds suffered in a shooting at the Oak Ridge Apartments in the 1200 block of
Angelique Street on Thursday afternoon, the 11th.

Connally says he cannot touch on the details of the investigations,
because it might affect the prosecution of the shootings.

“But some of the things that we are seeing, it’s not unlike
what you see on TV or in the movies or pay-per-view,” Connally says. “The
attitudes and stuff are exploited by Hollywood.”

Connally says the motive behind some of the shootings in St.
Joseph aren’t as serious as some might assume.

“People’s reactions to being insulted,” according to Connally.
“Those are things that people are seeing and so are we surprised that sometimes
that’s emulated in society? I don’t think we are.”

Connally says drugs might have been involved in the three
shootings, but not directly.

St. Joseph police continue to investigate 3 shootings in 1 week

Kansas City Royals television broadcaster and host of the Rounding the Bases podcast, Joel Goldberg, was the keynote speaker at the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Summit on the Missouri Western State University campus Wednesday.

Speaking to a large audience at the Fulkerson Center for just over an hour, Goldberg started his own motivational speaking business about four years ago. Last year, he took many of the elements from his speeches, combined them with his experiences as a baseball broadcaster, and used his down time during the COVID-19 pandemic to write a book called Small Ball Big Results.

"I had a lot of time sitting around during the pandemic," Goldberg told reporters Wednesday. "Sitting around for four months without baseball, and I was like, 'You know what? I've got all of the content. I know what I want to write about. Small ball is the theme, and it went from there. And it's been about a year."

Goldberg's speech Wednesday was entitled Never Underestimate the Power of a Dream. He talked about his journey through the broadcasting business, which started at a small TV station in Rhinelander, Wisconsin in the mid 1990s.

He joined the Royals broadcast team in 2007 after three years of covering the St. Louis Cardinals, Blues and Rams for FOX Sports Midwest. He also spent more than six years as a reporter and anchor at KTVI in St. Louis.

Through his personal and professional journey, and in his book and speeches, Goldberg shares how the little things, small ball, add up to big wins in baseball, business and in life, sharing stories of perseverance, patience and gratitude from soldiers, executives, entrepreneurs and athletes.

"I, for the first time in my life, really have experience beyond just all of the lessons learned from baseball," Goldberg said of his motivational speaking business. "But, also in terms of the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. So, when I found out this was going on (in St. Joseph) and they were inquiring, I thought, 'What a great opportunity to talk to a lot of people who may be in my shoes and are trying to build businesses or learn, or whoever it might be. Students, adults, whoever.'"

Goldberg's speech was attended by a wide variety of business professionals in the St. Joseph area Wednesday, along with numerous students and faculty at Missouri Western.

In a room full of mostly Kansas City sports fans, Goldberg says sharing stories of the Royals, who he's now covered on TV for 14 seasons, made it easier for him to connect with this particular audience.

Though, Goldberg's knowledge and experience span well beyond Kaufmann Stadium.

"Certainly can't ever go wrong with a Salvador Perez story or an Eric Hosmer story in the Kansas City area or St. Joe," he said. "If I go to another city, the good news is I've met baseball players and executives from all over the country. It kind of transfers to wherever I go."

That's why Goldberg's speeches have appealed to a wide variety of audiences. It's not just Royals. It's not just baseball. His podcast, Rounding the Bases, has a baseball-like name, but the episodes are in-depth conversations with successful entrepreneurs and leaders who compare the winning traits of sports to business and life in general.

"Stories are stories," Goldberg said. "You know, and a good story, whether it's a business story or a military story or a sports story or a life story, a good story is a good story. But, it's fun to get a little bit of a break from the same athletes over and over and start to meet people and tell other people's stories. There's some really, really cool stories out there, too."

Whether he's talking about baseball, or business, or just every day trials in life, Goldberg says his speeches and stories always circle back to one overlying theme - always find the positives.

A theme that's resonated especially well in the wake of a year-and-a-half long, worldwide pandemic.

"Everything comes in cycles," he said. So, whatever is bad today will eventually will get better. Whatever is great today will eventually come down. As Simon Sinek says, he talks about it in his most recent book The Infinite Game, so many of us are playing for today, but if you look big picture, you can survive anything."

Royals TV broadcaster Joel Goldberg speaks to St. Joseph Small Business Summit

It's Catholic Schools week, and the National Catholic Education Association is showing off the importance of a Catholic education with tours of its schools, including schools in St. Joseph.

President of St. Joseph Catholic Schools Partnership, Ann Lachowitzer, says that the approach taken in Catholic schools not only focuses on the education of the student, but the student’s character development.

"You know, one of the beautiful things about our Catholic schools, is that we really talk about the kind of person that we want this child to be, or what does this person want to be like, instead of what they want to do for a career, but who they want to be and what are the qualities they want to possess," Lachowitzer tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline.

Lachowitzer says one extremely important part of that character development, especially in these times as "Help Wanted" signs adorn buildings, is work ethic. Lachowitzer says developing a work ethic in students is among the characteristics Catholic educators attempt to develop in their students.

"Catholic education, you know, has its roots in developing that whole person, and so along with that spiritual formation, it is also that formation of, like I said, who they will be, so that service minded attitude, that giving back," Lachowitzer says.

Lachowitzer says Catholic education strives to develop a student's character and focus on who a student will become, rather than who they are now.

Catholic educators strive to go beyond just educating students

Northwest Missouri State University hosted a nationally
broadcast agriculture program as part of its celebration of agriculture this
week.

Host Mike Adams broadcast “Adams on Agriculture” from the new $10.7
million Agricultural Learning Center on the Maryville campus and had School of
Agricultural Sciences Director Rod Barr on as a guest, among others.

Barr tells Adams the center drastically upgraded the
agriculture offerings on the Maryville campus. Barr says Northwest was looking
to expand its agriculture course offerings and not just to agriculture majors.

“The facility has the opportunity to do more for students
outside of the School of Agricultural Sciences than inside and, additionally,
it has more to offer and the opportunities for the industry and the community than
it does for the university,” according to Barr.

Northwest has 520 students in its seven agricultural programs
with ag-business attracting the most majors. The new center is located on the
university’s 448-acre farm which raises a variety of crops as well as livestock
to provide students a hands-on experience.

A diverse group of businesses, organizations, and individuals
donated to make the Agricultural Learning Center a reality.

Major Gift Officer Jill Brown says it won’t just be used by
agriculture majors and farm groups, but will be open to all in the region.

“I love nothing more than when there’s a group that knows
nothing about agriculture, because I totally seize the opportunity that while
they’re in here, on your way to the bathroom, while don’t I also take you on a
quick lap and talk to you about the lab space and what the opportunities are in
agriculture and where your food comes from?” Brown tells Adams.

Adams, a veteran farm broadcaster, asks Senior Ryan
Shurvington of Clever what attracted him to come to Northwest and major in
agriculture education.

“I didn’t grow up on a farm; always knew that agriculture was something
that I was interested in,” Shurvington says. “I was always that kid that played
with the (toy) cows and the tractors and stuff at home, but I kind of really
got into it in high school and in my ag education program.”

“Adams on Agriculture” is heard daily on KFEQ from 11am to
noon.

broadcast agriculture program as part of its celebration of agriculture this
week.Host Mike Adams broadcast “Adams on Agriculture” from the new $10.7
million Agricultural Learning Center on the Maryville campus and had School of
Agricultural Sciences Director Rod Barr on as a guest, among others.Barr tells Adams the center drastically upgraded the
agriculture offerings on the Maryville campus. Barr says Northwest was looking
to expand its agriculture course offerings and not just to agriculture majors.“The facility has the opportunity to do more for students
outside of the School of Agricultural Sciences than inside and, additionally,
it has more to offer and the opportunities for the industry and the community than
it does for the university,” according to Barr.Northwest has 520 students in its seven agricultural programs
with ag-business attracting the most majors. The new center is located on the
university’s 448-acre farm which raises a variety of crops as well as livestock
to provide students a hands-on experience.A diverse group of businesses, organizations, and individuals
donated to make the Agricultural Learning Center a reality.Major Gift Officer Jill Brown says it won’t just be used by
agriculture majors and farm groups, but will be open to all in the region.“I love nothing more than when there’s a group that knows
nothing about agriculture, because I totally seize the opportunity that while
they’re in here, on your way to the bathroom, while don’t I also take you on a
quick lap and talk to you about the lab space and what the opportunities are in
agriculture and where your food comes from?” Brown tells Adams.<figure>

Shurvington of Clever what attracted him to come to Northwest and major in
agriculture education.“I didn’t grow up on a farm; always knew that agriculture was something
that I was interested in,” Shurvington says. “I was always that kid that played
with the (toy) cows and the tractors and stuff at home, but I kind of really
got into it in high school and in my ag education program.”“Adams on Agriculture” is heard daily on KFEQ from 11am to

NWMSU gets national exposure during "Adams on Agriculture" broadcast

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on new charges following a Monday arrest.

According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, officers arrested 26-year-old Weston J. Anderson of Atchison, on requested charges of criminal trespass and criminal damage to property in the 500 block North 9th Street.

Anderson has served time in the Atchison County jail several times for theft interference with law enforcement and related charges over the past six years, according to online jail records.

DAVIESS COUNTY —A Missouri woman was injured in an accident just before 6:30a.m. Tuesday in Daviess County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Dodge Caravan driven by Mark A. Englert, 70, Chillicothe, was westbound on U.S. 69 two miles west of Winston.&nbsp;

The van struck a deer in the road. Cameron ambulance transported a passenger Mary Griffon, 80, Trenton, to Cameron Regional Medical Center. The driver was not injured. Griffon was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Winter weather will be impacting the Midwest again before long, and area emergency management officials want to make sure people are prepared to deal with colder temperatures and wintry precipitation.

The Missouri Emergency Management Agency has partnered with the National Weather Service to promote Winter Weather Preparedness Week across the state through November 19.

Buchanan County Emergency Management Director Bill Brinton says this time of year is the perfect time to make sure your home, your vehicle and your family are ready to get through winter safely.

"Well, it's a time for people to start preparing themselves," Brinton said. "Get their vehicles checked and make sure they have good tires. Make sure they have an emergency kit in the back of their vehicle. Make sure they have enough fuel or whatever else in case they get stranded. Just prepare themselves for winter and cold weather."

Brinton says the county takes this time to review their emergency management operations plan, and work closely with the Buchanan County Road and Bridge Department while getting ready for winter weather.

"We have an emergency operations plan," Brinton said, "and we review it. (Roads and Bridges) has two district barns - an eastern district barn and a western district barn. As they prepare for winter and check their vehicles and things like that, it's a team effort with everybody and with all of our different agencies we work with to deal with bad weather."

Brinton says he also works closely with and "shares information all the time" with St. Joseph's city emergency manager, Bill Lamar during the winter time.

They also work with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, who reported over 5,500&nbsp;vehicle crashes in Missouri in 2020 where snow or ice were factors. Those crashes resulted in 1,698 injuries and 26 deaths.

If one must travel during adverse winter conditions, Brinton says your vehicle's emergency kit should include several different things."A person should have a blanket, and you should carry a small shovel around or a certain amount of salt in case you get stuck," Brinton said. "They should have maybe some non-perishable food things, and when they're going somewhere, make plans to be able to travel to that location safely."Winter in northwest Missouri is expected to be colder and drier than normal, with below normal snowfall expected further north and above normal snowfall expected further south.Brinton says the Buchanan County Emergency Management Office works closely with the National Weather Service office in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill to get the latest forecast information and to know if and when any advisories or warnings will be put out."So we work with the weather service and the local media to try and be aware of what's going on," Brinton said.
