HARRISON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 11:30a.m. Friday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Infiniti QK4 driven by Ethan R. Mann, 31, Bethany, was westbound on Route H two miles west of Gilman City. The vehicle traveled off the north side of the road, returned to the road and overturned.

NTA ambulance transported Mann and a passenger Ashley L. Tucker, 25, Bethany, to Harrison County Community Hospital. They were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

A small group of supporters came to St. Joseph to celebrate the decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade Friday. &nbsp;

Rally organizer John Kreipe says while he had a feeling the decision would pass, he wasn't expecting it until right at the deadline on Monday.&nbsp;

"So, that was a bit of a surprise, I did a bit of scrambling to get here," Kreipe tells KFEQ/ St. Joseph Post. "But this is something that's been really, really long overdue, it was overdue the day that Roe versus Wade was decided back in 1973."&nbsp;

Kreipe says while he was initially overwhelmed, having to organize an event in three hours, the ruling didn't come as&nbsp;a surprise.&nbsp;

"We've just been praying in the pro-life movement that the Supreme Court didn't change their mind in response to all the craziness that's been going on," Kreipe explains. &nbsp;

Kreipe says he was glad to see the ruling held up, and says now what comes next is all up to the states.&nbsp;

"Fortunately, Missouri is a very strong pro-life state," Kreipe points out. "I believe that Missouri has a law, I could be wrong on this, but I think the law in Missouri is that if Roe was overturned abortion is completely banned in Missouri."&nbsp;

That bill, known as a 'trigger law', is House Bill 216 which was passed in 2019, effectively banning all abortions once Roe v Wade was overturned. &nbsp;

Moments after the US Supreme Court's ruling, Attorney General Eric Schmitt and Governor Mike Parson signed the bill banning abortions into law, becoming the first state in the nation to do so.&nbsp;

ATCHISON COUNTY —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 5:30p.m. Thursday in Atchison.

According to Police Chief Mike Wilson, a vehicle driven by Julia Holt, 31, Atchison, struck a parked vehicle in the 1100 block Laramie.

EMS transport Holt to Amberwell Hospital for examination. Police reported no additional details.

Nationwide farmers are having issues buying new farm equipment, which is also making it difficult to buy used farm equipment. &nbsp;

Greg Peterson, better known as Machinery Pete, says there are a couple different factors that are causing the rise in the price of used farm equipment. &nbsp;

"One, is that farm income is up," Peterson tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "Commodity prices went up in the fall of 2020 and have been pushing to very high levels so, that's number one."&nbsp;

And number two is the current trend of high prices on new farm equipment&nbsp;

"Supply chain issues are actually getting worse so manufacturers like John Deere or Case IH, they can't make enough," Peterson explains. "Farmers want to buy new to update their equipment line."&nbsp;

Peterson says though those manufacturers can't produce enough equipment to keep up with the demand.&nbsp; For example, if you were looking for a new planter earlier this spring, all of those were pre ordered last fall. &nbsp;

Peterson says the problem is nationwide and so far, is showing no signs of letting up anytime soon&nbsp;

"Things are always subject to change but I don't see any tea leaves right now that would point to a cooling off, in fact it's getting hotter" Peterson points out. "In fact, our data, I've got three plus decades of tracking data patterns, and normally from middle of March through the summer is the soft time of year."&nbsp;

Peterson says that the soft time of year is while crops are in the ground and farmers can wait and see how they come out.&nbsp;

He says they then become aggressive near the end of the year to figure out what equipment they might need to replace, but right now. &nbsp;

"That's all out the window right now, you have to be proactive and plan ahead," he explains. &nbsp;

Peterson says the market has continued to go higher since April. &nbsp;

Recently, Peterson says he saw a 24-year-old John Deere tractor sold in Illinois for 21-thousand 500 dollars, selling even higher than it did brand new. &nbsp;

But is there any state where the used farm equipment problem is worse off?&nbsp;

"Nope, they're all on fire, and I've never seen that before," Peterson sadly says. "And we cover the US and Canada so usually there's always been somewhere where used values are softer, and there just isn't now."&nbsp;

Peterson says normally you might see prices differ depending on the region farm equipment is coming from &nbsp;

Expert says rising prices on used farm equipment won't slow anytime soon

A mental health clinic in St. Joseph has been allocated $600,000 of American Rescue Plan funding for the development of an urgent care unit, but a few issues need to be addressed first.

City of St. Joseph Public Information Officer Mary Robertson says a few concerns have been brought to the city, regarding this urgent care unit being developed by the Family Guidance Center.

"Infrastructure and transportation," Robertson said in response to what the concerns have been about. "This does serve a larger area than just Buchanan County. So, is there a plan in place that addresses transportation issues? Not only from the facility, but folks leaving and getting to other services that they need."

Robertson says Family Guidance Center officials provided an official response to these concerns to the city back on May 31.

"So, it is in the hands of the city," she said. "We're waiting for this work session on June 29, where city council will look at the plans that have been provided that hopefully, I think, will address the concerns with the residents."

Family Guidance Center serves nine northwest Missouri counties. St. Joseph City Council will address these concerns at a work session on June 29. Robertson says there's strong optimism these issues will be resolved, and the development of the urgent care unit can move forward.

"I think having all of the information to complete the puzzle was necessary in this particular situation," Robertson said. "I think city council will find that they have the answers to concerns and questions raised and we'll be able to move forward."

Family Guidance Center is a mental health clinic that serves nine northwest Missouri counties. They also have offices in Maryville and Cameron.

St. Joseph City Council to hold work session on Family Guidance Center development

The St. Joseph Sports Commission unveiled its second <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/432831fe-146a-4394-8b26-213041cead8e">St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class</a> last week, and one inductee is one of the more influential college basketball coaches in the city's history.

Former Missouri Western men's basketball coach Tom Smith is a 2022 St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame inductee after leading the Griffons to a school record 448 wins in 25 seasons from 1988 - 2013.

Smith, who's already in five other Halls of Fame, says this one is particularly special.

"This is a special award and a special Hall of Fame to go into, because it's in the town I lived in with my family and wife," Smith said. "Patsy worked for the school for 20 years plus."

Smith took the Missouri Western men's basketball team to the NCAA tournament 11 times and won five MIAA regular season and five MIAA tournament titles. He was inducted into this year's Area Sports Hall of Fame with 11 other individuals, along with St. Joseph-based Herzog Motorsports.

Smith's coaching career spans 36 total years - 25 of those at Missouri Western.&nbsp;Smith says when he was looking for his next coaching job in 1988, he had noticed that St. Joseph was a pretty strong basketball town, given what other regional schools it was up against.

"In the middle of Missouri and Kansas and Kansas State and everything else, it still held its own," Smith said. "I don't want to say it was more important than football, but (basketball) held its own with football. It was one of the things I considered very highly, and I think as the years wore on, I became even more convinced (St. Joseph) was a great place to coach."

Smith also coached at his alma mater Valparaiso and Central Missouri, compiling 618 total wins in his career.

He's already a member of the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame, the MIAA Hall of Fame and several more. The floor at Missouri Western Fieldhouse was named in Smith's honor in February 2019.

Director of the St. Joseph Sports Commission Brett Esely says Smith took over at a time when Missouri Western transitioned from NAIA to NCAA competition, and he had the whole community excited about his team.

"(The MWSU Fieldhouse) was packed," Esely said. "It was the place to be on Saturday night. The level of play was good. You held on every play, and it was like that for 25 seasons in Coach Smith's career at Missouri Western State University."&nbsp;

The entire 2022 St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame class will officially be enshrined into the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame during a September ceremony at Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center.

Tom Smith humbled by St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame induction

The St. Joseph Police Departments new Crime Prevention Officer is working hard to fill the shoes of his predecessor.  

Seargent Matt Kneib took over as Crime Prevention Officer when Roy Hoskins retired from the department. Kneib says taking over for Hoskins is some big shoes to fill. 

Kneib says one of his biggest jobs as Crime Prevention Officer is working to educate the public.  

"Then also, looking at our plan of action to try to help the public to deter crimes from occurring," Kneib tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.  

Kneib says he works with individuals in the public as well as business owners.  

"Doing surveys of their business, how it's laid out, some ideas of conformity to better secure their buildings, and ways to make it safer," Kneib explains.  

Kneib says for one of these surveys you can contact his office or you contact the police station.  

Kneib says one way he works to educate people is with the Cops Care Youth Camp next month.  

The camp has been around for nearly 10 years and Kneib says one of his big roles is helping to organize the event.  

"It's a week-long event at the Rec Center, we have almost 40 kids signed up for it ages nine to twelve, and that group gets to come to the Rec Center and gets to interact with the school resource officers and other volunteers," Kneib says. 

38 kids enrolled in the youth camp this year for the week-long event Kneib says. 

Following the COVID-19 pandemic Kneib is seeing new life in the city's neighborhood watch program as well 

Kneib says now that concerns about the pandemic have slowed, he is starting to see more interest in being a part of the neighborhood watch.  

"We have the south side group and a north end group that meet regularly on a monthly basis," Kneib points out. "But then there's other organizations and areas that are trying to get things started again." 

And if your neighborhood doesn't have a program, Kneib says you can contact him to figure out how to get one up and going.  

"Kind of have like a starter pack style idea where it will give them information and suggestions of how to form it and how to keep it going," Kneib explains. 

Kneib says in the neighborhoods that do have a program running he's seen great relationships between neighbors and the police.

As its fundraising drive nears its end the Allied Arts Council is hopeful it will reach its fundraising goal. &nbsp;

Allied Arts Council Executive Director Teresa Fankhauser says the council is currently about $45,000 short of its goal, which is why she put out a call for donors. &nbsp;

"We want people to know that we are short and ask that they contribute if they haven't or if they're capable of contributing a little bit more this year to help us reach that goal of $245,000," Fankhauser tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "It would really benefit all of the arts organizations that take advantage of the grants that they receive from this money."&nbsp;

Fankhauser says the Arts fund allocates fund to seven different organizations, such as Robidoux Resident Theatre and the St. Joseph Symphony.&nbsp;

Fankhauser remains optimistic though the goal will be reached, saying it's rare to see the goal not be reached. &nbsp;

"There have been years, I think I was just looking at our history, and I think it was in around 2004, maybe 2006, I can't recall, that's the last time we didn't make goal," Fankhauser says.&nbsp;

The Allied Arts Councils goal for the arts fund is $245,000.&nbsp; Donations will be collected through June 30th. &nbsp;

Fankhauser says it's normal for fundraising efforts to run into June.&nbsp;

"Our official campaign is a two-month window, which is a very short window in which to raise money, so anyways we just keep working and plugging away until June 30th, or through June 30th, with the goal of reaching our goal," Fankhauser explains.&nbsp;

Allied Arts Council is asking for donors as Arts Fund drive nears end

Tickets for Kansas City Chiefs training camp became available to season ticket holders Tuesday and now can be reserved by the general public, starting Wednesday.

The Chiefs will be back in St. Joseph for training camp for a 12th time this summer with open practices starting July 28. Missouri Western athletic director Andy Carter says preparations continue as the campus and city get ready to roll out the red carpet.

"I think it's very exciting," Carter said. "We actually had an operational meeting (Tuesday) and kind of worked through a lot of the moving parts. I think it will be more exciting once they actually get here and we're facing live bullets rather than talking about it. But, it's an exciting time to be a Griffon."

All training camp practices will be held at the Mosaic Training Fields on the Missouri Western campus. Members of the general public can reserve their training camp tickets starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday by going to Chiefs.com/trainingcamp.

While fans were allowed back at camp in 2021, there were still certain COVID restrictions in place. This year is full steam ahead, as fan autograph sessions are back after being suspended last summer.

Marci Bennett, executive director for the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau, says getting camp back last year was nice, but there were still difficulties.

"Last year was kind of like tiptoeing through the tulips," she said. "Because, we didn't have it the year before and then last year, we were still really perusing the COVID situation."

Even with the restrictions last year, Bennett says the economic impact of training camp in the city is hard to exactly measure, but is certainly palpable.

"We know it's a big impact," she said. "Our hotels show a big increase and they can tell. I mean, they're not asking people if they're here for Chiefs camp, but if three-fourths of the people checking in on a Friday night have Chiefs jerseys on, you know it's making an impact."

Carter says this is the final year the Chiefs are required to come to St. Joseph, according to the current agreement. But, he's optimistic a more long-term deal can be sorted out.

"They're not required to tell us what they want to do necessarily until March when their season is over," he explained. "But, I can tell you I have had a conversation, very high-level, very brief. Didn't dig in, but started that discussion and it was very positive."

The Chiefs have come to St. Joseph for camp every year since 2010, with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19. 

The CVB is still in the process of planning and marketing this year's camp, but Bennett says one staple, the 'Welcome Chiefs' yard signs, will start popping up again soon.

"Not only does that welcome the Chiefs," she said, "but it reminds all of our local residents that, 'Hey! The Chiefs are here! They're here right now!' That's kind of cool, too. It kind of pumps up the community."

Moreover, Bennett says training camp is a great opportunity for fans from outside the city to explore St. Joseph and learn more about what it has to offer.

"What that does in my mind is help those Chiefs fans realize that, 'Okay, once Chiefs season is over, and we want to go somewhere and not have to put five tanks of gas in our car to get there, let's go to St. Joe. Let's see what that town really is all about.'"

City, MWSU officials preparing for Chiefs training camp as fans reserve tickets

St. Joseph Police arrested a man early Wednesday after he failed to yield to police officers, hit two patrol cars and left the scene.

30-year-old Zachary Hart drove off in a stolen Ford Taurus and crashed into several parked cars in the area of 26th and Mitchell Avenue around 2:15 Wednesday morning.

Hart was eventually apprehended after leaving the vehicle and trying to hide in nearby bushes. Hart was arrested on suspicion of assault on law enforcement officers, motor vehicle theft and resisting arrest. Hart also had several outstanding drug-related warrants.

Officers say Hart was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of this incident. No officers were injured. The investigation is ongoing.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Ford pickup driven by Jordyn M. Miller, 21, Glenwood, Iowa, was southbound on U.S. 71 two miles north of Marysville.

The pickup rear-ended the towed unit of a 2016 Ram pickup driven by Corey D. Money, 39, Maryville. After impact, the Ford traveled off the right side of the road, went airborne over a creek, continued through a barbed wire fence and came to rest in a corn field.&nbsp;

Nodaway County ambulance transported Miller to Mosaic in St. Joseph.&nbsp; Money was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Woman hospitalized after Nodaway Co. rear-end crash

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest.

On Monday, police arrested 63-year-old Newton D. Colvin of Effingham on a Municipal Court warrant on a requested charge of failure to appear in court, according to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Colvin has four or more previous convictions for theft and one for criminal damage to property, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp; Atchison County authorities released him on bond, according to Wilson.

Kansas felon facing new charges after arrest

Tuesday is officially the first day of summer, and it will feel like it for many across the region.

Highs in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas Tuesday are expected to be in the upper 90s with indices up to 105 possible.

National Weather Service meteorologist Brent Pesel from the Pleasant Hill Office says a front will move through later Tuesday evening, which could trigger some strong thunderstorms.

"There's a marginal risk for severe weather around this evening," Pesel told St. Joseph Post. "Just with how hot and humid it is, that makes the atmosphere really unstable. We have a front moving into the area this evening which might trigger some thunderstorms."

Pesel says the rain chances will persist through the night.

"As we get toward sunset and continuing through the overnight hours," Pesel said. "We don't have high expectations for severe weather, but it certainly isn't zero."

That front will bring with it highs in the 80s for Wednesday and Thursday before temperatures rise back into the mid 90s by Friday and Saturday, with heat indices this weekend ranging from 100-107.

Relief is on the way next week as well, Pesel says, with highs early next week starting off in the low-to-mid 80s.

"Middle of this week, as the front rolls through, we're going to get a little bit of a break from these really hot temperatures," Pesel said. "The heat builds back up Friday into Saturday before another front looks to roll through and get us just a little bit cooler here into next week."

First day of summer brings hot temps, rain chances to northwest Missouri

Last summer a group of Catholic sisters moved from their home in Raytown to St Joseph and later this year they hope to move into a convent near Cathedral. &nbsp;

Pastor of Cathedral Father Steve Hansen says when the convent opened in 2020 as the children's center moved to the old Mosaic Cancer Center building, he began receiving questions about what would be done with the convent.&nbsp;

"And I remember distinctly saying we'll get nuns one day, or sisters, I had no idea where they would come from," Father Hansen tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "Sisters of Jesus the Lord were not on my radar."&nbsp;

Hansen says while the idea to have sisters move into the convent came into his head about three years ago, it wasn't until the fall of 2020 he realized who could use the space&nbsp;

"Specifically, I wonder if the Sisters of Jesus the Lord could live here, because I was standing next to the empty convent and the little children were literally moving out at that time," Father Hansen explains. "It wasn't like I was desperate to do something with the building or something, we could just turn down the heat and all that, but it just kind of crossed my mind as an idea."&nbsp;

Mother Stella of the Sisters in Jesus the Lord says it just so happens when Hansen reached out the sisters were seeking a new home. &nbsp;

"The parish we were at was kind of in its last days and we knew that we were going to have to find a new home and so, yeah," Mother Stella says. &nbsp;

Sisters in Jesus the Lord were founded to help revive the Catholic religion in Russia.&nbsp; They made home in Raytown since 2009 but moved to St. Joseph last summer. &nbsp;

Mother Stella says coming to St. Joe provides many opportunities for the sisters and herself. &nbsp;

"So, there's going to be, as young sisters go through their training and make their vows they'll go off to Russia, but new women will be coming so we should have a steady base of sisters helping locally, while preparing sisters to go to Russia," Mother Stella says. "And, you know, it's always beautiful to have that missionary outlook."&nbsp;

The sisters are currently staying in a furnished pastoral home while renovations take place at the convent.&nbsp; Mother Stella says the hope is to be in the convent by Christmas.&nbsp;

Sisters of Jesus the Lord making new home in St. Joseph

A powerful northwest Missouri senator, who returned to
Jefferson City after serving as Andrew County Clerk, says the legislature has
changed over the years and not always for the better.

Sen. Dan Hegeman of Cosby, a Republican, served in the
minority during his time in the Missouri House – from 1991 to 2002 – but in the
majority when he was elected to the Missouri Senate in 2014. In between, from
2002 to 2008, Hegeman served as Andrew County Clerk.

The is the second part of our two-part series produced from
our in-studio interview with Hegeman.

Hegeman leaves the General Assembly due to term limits. He
says prior to term limits, state senators cooperated more with each other since
senators might serve for 20 years or more. 

“And so, they had to learn how to work with each other, to
accomplish what they needed to for their specific senatorial districts and their
regions,” Hegeman tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “With term limits, all you have
is eight years. It tends to make legislators look at the next job, the next
position that they might want to run for, rather than working together toward
long-term goals.”

Hegeman insists limiting senators to two, four-year terms has
weakened the legislative branch of state government.

“To the benefit of the judicial branch and the executive
branch of government and, quite honestly, the institutional memory is within
the bureaucracy of state government and the lobbying corps of state government,”
according to Hegeman. “So, the legislative branch has lost some of those powers,
some of those skills. I have seen the legislative branch diminished, because of
term limits.”

Hegeman spent his entire tenure in the Missouri House as a
member of the minority party. Though he returned after Republicans had seized
control of both the state House and Senate, he became frustrated and
disappointed with Republican in-fighting in the Senate.

Hegeman worked to become Senate Appropriations Committee chair
when he returned to the legislature, saying he wanted to bring a sound,
reasonable approach to the budget process in Jefferson City. He rose to become
one of the most powerful legislators in the state Capitol, a key player in
deciding how the legislature spent taxpayer dollars.

“So, I’ve been happy that my stature has allowed me the
opportunity to have a bit of an outsized voice on how we’ve directed the state
of Missouri,” Hegeman says. “And I’m pleased that the citizens of northwest
Missouri have given me that opportunity.”

Hegeman will leave the legislature at the end of this year. He
says his focus will shift to local matters, volunteering with area nonprofits
as well as becoming more engaged with his local church. He says the congregation
hasn’t asked him to be budget chair, yet.

Former St. Joseph mayor Larry Stobbs died Monday afternoon at age 84.

 He served as mayor of St. Joseph from 1994-2002. His tenure coincided with St. Joseph achieving All-America City status in 1997.

Stobbs also served as mayor when St. Joseph got rid of its downtown parking meters - something he was strongly in favor of.

Before serving as mayor, Stobbs was a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol for more than 30 years. He and his wife, Joyce, had been married for 63 years.

Mo. teen injured after car driven by 15-year-old strikes a tree

Buchanan County authorities have identified a body that was found in the Missouri River over the weekend.

Sheriff Bill Puett said in a press release Sunday evening that an autopsy shows the body found in the river is that of 39-year-old Michael Zorn of St. Joseph.

Zorn is thought to be homeless. An extensive search has been made for Zorn's family and so far, authorities have not been able to locate any living relatives.

However, the Sheriff's office says they've "received a tremendous amount of information from our citizens...we have deputies working to attempt to make contact with family members at this time."

Zorn's body was found in the river Friday evening in southern Buchanan County near Atchison, Kansas.

The investigation is ongoing and autopsy results are pending. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help.

Anyone who might have information on Zorn or his family is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-238-TIPS (8477), or the Criminal Investigations Division at 816-236-8856.

Man found in Missouri River over the weekend identified as a St. Joseph man

A chance to get a small taste of what the St. Joseph Symphony has will be happening this Saturday. &nbsp;

St. Joseph Symphony trumpeters Bill Richardson and Bob Harvey will put on a free show at 3pm at First Christian Church in St. Joseph on June 25th. &nbsp;

Richardson says the show will provide a good opportunity for people that don't know if they would like to attend a symphony performance or not.&nbsp;

"It's a little bit more of an interactive experience, we'll be talking about the pieces and maybe some performance practices between each of the pieces," Richardson tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And, it's a free performance so it's very family friendly, the individual compositions we'll be playing they aren't too long."&nbsp;

Richardson and Harvey will also be joined by pianist Jiwon Choi for the performance titled "Baroque, Brass, and Bebop".&nbsp;

Richardson says himself and Harvey will do some duet pieces as well as some other classical pieces on different types of trumpets. &nbsp;

"It's a wide variety of music, some popular pieces and some hardcore classical pieces, and we're pretty sure that audiences will really enjoy it," Richardson enthusiastically says.&nbsp;

Richardson says both Harvey and himself will play the piccolo trumpet, some pieces on the larger B Flat trumpet, as well as one where Richardson will play a C trumpet. &nbsp;

Richardson says outreach programs like this have happened for a couple years, and when Harvey and himself were approached to put one on, they were ready.&nbsp;

"Maybe a little bit more of an intimate setting, it's three musicians, it's Bob, myself, and an incredible pianist, her name is Jiwon Choi, and so she's a true collaborative artist in this whole venture."&nbsp;
