A program that distributes shoes to area school children in need will be giving out shoes for its 20th year.&nbsp;

Soles for Christ began small in 2003, giving away 200 pairs of shoes to St. Joseph children. Since then, more than 15,000 pairs of shoes have been given away. &nbsp;

ALF-CIO Community Services Executive Director Nichi Yeager says the success of the program comes from the volunteers seeing how grateful kids are for the shoes.&nbsp;

"When the folks see this, especially if it's a representative from the church or a representative from an organization, they take it back to their group and tell them these stories and people quickly understand just how valuable this is to our community and to the folks living in St. Joe that need this type of assistance," Yeager tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;

Yeager says Soles for Christ keeps growing in popularity through the years. &nbsp;

Yeager says Community Services distributes shoes to over 1,200 kids over a two-day period during the event. She says the speed at which the event moves do bring a little more attention to it. &nbsp;

"It is one of our more popular programs for sure," Yeager proudly says. "And it definitely does have a lot of community and public support."&nbsp;

Community Services' other big one-time event is Adopt-A-Family. It also has its Thrift Store open year-round. &nbsp;

Soles for Christ shoes were distributed out of the AFL-CIO Communality Services headquarters in the beginning. Now, it's outgrown that and shoes are being distributed out of the Civic Arena. &nbsp;

Yeager says last year, the program even expanded beyond just giving shoes, and those organizations will be at this year’s event as well.

"Including an organization that does free eye checks for kids and we have a couple of other agencies and utility companies that are going to be there to also provide any kind of assistance or communication with parents while they're there," Yeager explains. "So, it's kind of going to be a one stop shop and we're hoping to kind of keep building on that."&nbsp;

This year’s shoe distribution event will be held on August 2nd and 3rd at the Civic Arena. Students from Andrew, Dekalb, Buchanan, and Clinton counties in Missouri and Doniphan County in Kansas are eligible to attend. &nbsp;

Community Services will take new shoe donations until July 28th.&nbsp;

Soles for Christ had small beginning, but continues to grow

WORTH COUNTY —A Missouri man died in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Thursday in Worth County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Chevy S10 pickup driven by Max A. Calhoon, 73, Allendale, was northbound on Route T just north of North Street in Allendale.&nbsp;

The pickup crossed the center of the road, traveled off the west side of Route T, went airborne, struck the ground, traveled off an embankment, struck several trees and landed in a pond. Calhoon was pronounced dead at the scene and transported by Sheridan ambulance to Pruch-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Missouri man dies after pickup goes airborne, lands in pond

BROWN COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident that was reported just before 6p.m. Thursday in Brown County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Yamaha&nbsp;XVS65T driven by&nbsp; Luke E. Scheidt, 51, Hiawatha, was southbound on Kansas 73 one mile south of the Nebraska State line. 

The motorcycle left the roadway to the west, crossed a driveway and overturned.

Scheidt was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP. The actual time of the accident is unknown at this time.

Kansas man dies after Brown County motorcycle crash

ANDREW COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Thursday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Jeep Wrangler driven by Janelle R. Dewey, 41, Savannah, was westbound on CR 320 six miles east of Savannah.

The Jeep struck an eastbound John Deere 410R driven by Ronald D. Stagner, 60, King City, head-on.

A private vehicle transported Dewey to Mosaic Life Care. Stagner was not injured. Dewey was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

NODAWAY COUNTY —A Missouri man was injured in an accident just after 10a.m. Thursday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Volvo semi driven by Correy A. Miller, 43, Cameron, was northbound on U.S. 71 at 400th Street three miles northwest of Bolckow.&nbsp;

The vehicle traveled off the road, struck a sign, overturned and struck a utility pole.

Man from Cameron hospitalized after crash into utility pole

The St. Joseph Sports Commission, in cooperation with the St. Joseph Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau, announced the 2022 St. Joseph Area Sports of Hall of Fame Class Thursday.

Officially created in November 2020, the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame recognizes individuals, families, teams, entities or significant feats/accomplishments that made a significant impact on sports history in Buchanan County.

Director of the St. Joseph Sports Commission Brett Esely&nbsp;says this class has a wide variety of talents and background.

"We have legendary coaches and athletes," Esely said. "We have folks who represent other key areas of sports from right here in St. Joseph. What's also really neat is these are all members of our community, and these are all stories that some of which we know a lot about. Some we don't know as much about, and that's the great thing about this process."

To be eligible for selection, the individual or team must have been born in Buchanan County, must have made their sports career or accomplish their feat in Buchanan County, or must be contributing to sports in Buchanan County at the present time.

The 2022 Hall of Fame Class includes: H.L. “Doc” Childress – World Renowned Sporting Clays Shooter Janet (Clark) Moody – Women’s Basketball Legend Vic Eaton – Football Legend Gary Filbert – Missouri Sports Legend George Hayward – National Football League Official Michael Hill – Football Trailblazer Gust Karras – Legendary Wrestling Promoter Bill McKinney – Area Sports Innovator Tom Smith – Legendary Basketball Coach Dennis Snethen – Wesley Weightlifters and USA Olympic Coach Herzog Motorsports – Midwest Racing Icons Special Olympics Athlete of the Year presented by the Hook Family – Tanner Hrenchir

The class was selected by an anonymous three-person committee, who chose the inductees amongst a group of 39 formal nominees.

"When I look at this class," Esely remarked, "I see cutting edge. I see great memories. I see just great spectacles of not only sports in St. Joseph, but sports nationally and around the world."

The inaugural class was enshrined into this Hall of Fame <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/174bd76a-6fa7-450f-aad6-afe6633e91d2">in September 2021</a>.

"I'm probably more excited about year two than I was year one," Esely said. "Only because it was going to be really exciting to see how the Hall of Fame would grow. Exciting to see the number of nominations that came in as a result of the publicity of year one."

An additional award recipient will be announced later this summer, as the inaugural Coach Bill Snyder Woman of Impact Award will be presented by Coach Snyder - a Lafayette alum and Kansas State legend.

 That award recognizes an athlete, coach, administrator or other outstanding feat accomplished in Buchanan County over the past year.

 The award is named in Coach Snyder’s honor as a tribute to the impact his mother made on his life, but the impact of women in all levels of sports in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX.

The 2022 St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony, which will be held this year in memory of the St. Joseph Sports Commissions’ founder and first chairman Frank O’Malley, will be on Sunday, September 18 at Stoney Creek Hotel &amp; Conference Center, with social hour beginning at 4 p.m.

A limited number of tickets for the event will go on sale in early July for $25 per person and may be purchased at stjomosports.com.

2022 ST. JOSEPH AREA SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS BIOGRAPHIES

H.L. “Doc” Childress – World Renowned Sports Clays Shooter A local optometrist for 53 years, Harold “Doc” Childress was legendary to waterfowling. He loved hunting and shooting sporting clays, the most difficult shooting sport in the world. He started shooting sporting clays in 1989 in the veterans’ division and made Team USA in 1991. The next year, at the World Championships in Vermont, he tied for the bronze medal and became the first American to win a medal in world competition. He won three Missouri State Championships; two SGA’s in the 1990’s and was in Outdoor Life magazine’s list of All American Sporting Clays for ten straight years. He was the first shooter inducted into the Missouri Sporting Clays Association, is the only sporting clays shooter inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, is a member of the Water Fowlers Hall of Fame in Mound City, Missouri and the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame.

Janet (Clark) Moody – Women’s Basketball Legend Growing up in St. Joseph, Janet (Clark) Moody was special on the hardwood. A graduate of Lafayette High School in 1985, she was a highly successful athlete participating in volleyball, basketball and track. With great all-around athletic success, she excelled in basketball, lettering all four years and receiving All City, All Conference, All District and All State honors an amazing three times. She was also named the first ever Miss Show-Me Basketball her senior year. She took her talents to Northwest Missouri State University where she played four seasons at the NCAA Division II level. Clark is the only Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball player to be in the 2,000 point club. As one of the best shooters in MIAA women’s basketball history, she also ranks fourth on the all-time MIAA scoring list. Clark averaged over 20 points per game in her final three seasons at Northwest in route to being named First Team All-MIAA in 1987, 1988 and 1989. She is also in the 500 rebound club and ranks sixth all-time at Northwest in assists (320) and sixth in steals (204). Clark also finished her career as the all-time leader in three-point percentage at 40.1 percent, a mark she still holds. Her jersey has been retired at Northwest in which she was inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame in 1996 and the MIAA Hall of Fame in 2013.

Vic Eaton – Area Football Legend Not known for winning when he entered the door as a freshman, Vic Eaton’s talents were instrumental in helping resurrect a Lafayette High School football program from the bottom of the heap to a winner. Eaton was a four-year letterwinner, All-City selection and received honorable mention honors as a National High School All-American. Not only did he excel on the gridiron, but his multi-talented skillset was showcased on the basketball court and track as he lettered in those sports as well. Upon graduation in 1951, Vic signed to play football at the University of Missouri not as the quarterback but also the punter where he was a three-year letterman including leading the Big Seven Conference in passing in 1954. Following his senior season, he was named the Outstanding Back in the Blue/Gray Game for the victorious North team. He was selected in the 11th round of the 1955 NFL Draft by the Pittsburg Steelers and made the active roster beating out Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas for the spot. Eaton only played one season for the Steelers before being commissioned into the Air Force as a pilot in which he served our country for three seasons.

Gary Filbert – Missouri Sports Legend Founder, pioneer, innovator, legend. Those are just a few of the words people have used to describe the life and career of Gary Filbert. Filbert grew up in St. Joseph and was a star athlete and graduate of Benton High School lettering in football, basketball and track. He took his talents to the University of Missouri and played one season on the hardwood before leaving to serve a four year stint in the Marine Corps. Upon his return, Filbert was a three year letterwinner for the Tigers. Following graduation, he began his coaching and administration career at Mexico (Mo.) High School recording 260 wins. In 1969, as Missouri Western State College was a making landmark move from a two year to four year institution, Filbert also made a landmark move jumping from high school to the college ranks in taking over as the Griffon head coach. Over the next 13 seasons, Filbert pioneered the Griffs into this new era amassing 210 wins, three NAIA National Tournament appearances and was a three time Missouri NAIA District Coach of the Year. For these accomplishments, Filbert was inducted into the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. Following the 1982 season, Coach Filbert once again made a landmark move going from the hardwood of the NAIA to the Big 8 as he was hired as an assistant coach under Norm Stewart at Mizzou where he helped lead the Tigers to a #2 national ranking and a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. After three seasons on the bench in Columbia, Filbert went from assistant coach to assistant athletics director and after three more years in that role, he became the executive director of the Show-Me State Games and took a struggling program and exploded it to one of the biggest state games in the country. For all of his accomplishments, Filbert has received many honors including being inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame receiving the prestigious designation as a Missouri Sports Legend.

George Hayward – NFL Official Working his way up the ranks - that’s has been the path for St. Joseph native George Hayward. A graduate of Central High School, Hayward was an all-city and all-district performer as an offensive lineman. He played on Missouri Western’s first football teams transitioning to the defensive side of the ball playing end and linebacker. Like many players when their playing career ends, Hayward had interest in staying in football but instead of transitioning into the coaching ranks he became a game official. He started on Pop Warner games, middle school and high school crews before graduating into junior college and then small college football working in the Heart of America Conference and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. In 1984 after years of excellent performance on the field, he was hired by the Big Eight Conference as a line judge where he spent seven seasons working a number of big games including the 1986 Citrus Bowl and 1988 Sun Bowl. In the fall of 1991, his officiating body of work became complete as he reached the pinnacle of officiating joining the National Football League. In 25 seasons, he worked 425 games including 19 playoff games including Super Bowl XLI won by Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

Michael Hill – Local Football Trailblazer Born and raised in St. Joseph, Missouri, Michael Hill has lived out the ideal pathway for a hometown athlete and blazed the trail for others to follow. A three-year starter and all-state selection at Central High School, Hill took his talents to Missouri Western State University where he was a four year All-MIAA selection including being the MIAA Offensive MVP in 2012 and Harlon Hill Award Finalist (Division II’s version of the Heisman Trophy). Hill is MWSU’s all-time leading rusher with 4,969 yards, a mark that is 6th all-time in MIAA history. He was instrumental in helping lead the Griffons to the best season in school history going 12-2, claiming the MIAA title and securing the school’s first two NCAA playoff victories finishing with a final team ranking of 8th in the country. In addition to his already mentioned accolades, Hill was the D2football.com National Offensive Player of the Year and a first team All-American in two different outlets. Hill took his talents to the professional ranks spending four years in the National Football League with five different teams including playing in two AFC playoff games with the Indianapolis Colts.

Gust Karras – Legendary Wrestling Promoter An early ambassador of St. Joseph, Gust Karras was more than one of the best known wrestling promoters of his era. He was a legend in this region and believed in this city. Born in Greece, Gust arrived in the states in 1922 and quickly became a top-level wrestler becoming the heavyweight champion of Montana. Living with his new bride Goldie in Chillicothe, he began supplementing his income by promoting events. He moved to St. Joseph in 1933 and began promoting wrestling not only locally but to larger locales all over the country. His shows at City Auditorium consistently drew crowds of 3,000 every Friday night. Not just a promoter, he was a judge of talent and teacher helping develop two of the world’s best wrestlers in Harley Race and Sonny Myers. When KQTV television debuted in 1953, Gust brought his wrestling shows to television which helped expand his fan base with the highly “Big 2 Wrestling” show on Saturday evenings. His reputation as a promoter reached his talents beyond wrestling as he brought the Harlem Globetrotters to town, promoted Golden Gloves boxing and also live musicals and vaudeville. Always dressed in a coat and tie, wearing a hat with a pipe in his mouth, he was a St. Joseph institution.

Bill McKinney – Area Sports Innovator Community leader and champion to recreational activities, Bill McKinney’s legacy in St. Joseph began at an early age. He was a three-sport athlete at Lafayette High School excelling in football which led to a scholarship at the University of Missouri where he played three seasons as a two-way player. Following graduation, he came back to the area serving as a teacher and a coach at Plattsburg High School and then later Lafayette, before opening a sporting goods business that he owned for 20 years. His 1987 career change not only had an impact on his life, but also on the future of his hometown as he was named the interim director of the parks and recreation department. Under Bill’s leadership which quickly turned into permanent; Phil Welch Stadium, Bartlett Park, Bode Ice Arena, Missouri Theater, Civic Arena, Fairview Golf Course Clubhouse and Noyes Tennis Complex have all undergone major renovation along with the creation of the St. Joseph Aquatic Park. Bill’s innovation and inspiration helped further enhance three notable projects to ensure their success; these projects included Remington Nature Center, St. Joseph REC Center and Heritage Park Softball Complex. While Bill loved all sports, he had a special tie to softball being instrumental in bringing numerous regional, national and international competitions to town. For his efforts, he was inducted into the Missouri Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame.

Tom Smith – Hall of Fame Basketball Coach On the last home game of his first season as head basketball coach at Missouri Western, Tom Smith took the arena microphone and told the crowd “I want everyone back here next year and I want the place rocking.” Rocking it was in that 1989-90 season and began a tradition of excellence that spanned 25 seasons in the black &amp; gold. Smith is the all time leader in wins in MWSU history with 448 in which he led the Griffons to five MIAA Regular Season Championships, five MIAA Conference Tournament Championships and 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In doing so, he coached 49 All-MIAA players including two MIAA MVP’s and three NCAA All-Americans. Combined with his tenure at the University of Central Missouri, his 534 MIAA victories rank second all time in league history. Including his stint at his alma mater Valparaiso, Smith compiled 618 career victories in his 36 seasons on the bench. For his career achievements, Smith is a member of the Missouri Western Athletics Hall of Fame, MIAA Hall of Fame, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, Missouri Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and Valparaiso Athletics Hall of Fame. Additionally, the court in the MWSU Fieldhouse will forever bear his name being dedicated in February 2019.

Dennis Snethen – Wesley Weightlifters, USA Weightlifting Coach Simply put, Dennis Snethen is iconic. Snethen, a Benton High School graduate, began his lore in coaching weightlifters in 1978 when he became Head Coach of the Wesley Weightlifters taking a then small club and turning it in to a world power. In coaching numerous local athletes, he first made his mark on USA Weightlifting as a coach developing athletes that became some of America's best weightlifters that have represented the United States on the world's greatest sporting stage, the Olympic Games. U.S. Olympians Wes Barnett (1992 and 1996) and Pete Kelley (1996) both got their starts under Snethen in St. Joseph at the Wesley Center. Snethen made his Olympic coaching debut as an assistant at the 1996 Atlanta games. The 2008 Beijing games, were his first as a head coach. Snethen has received numerous accolades in his career including being honor by USA Weightlifting as its Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1999. Prior to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, Snethen served as the Women's Weightlifting Head Coach for the 2007 Pan American Games and World Championships Teams. In addition to coaching, he has served as the interim director of USA Weightlifting and seven years as the National Governing Body’s President. He is a member of the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame.

Herzog Motorsports – Midwest Racing Icons The Herzog Companies are an institution in St. Joseph and across the country. Founded in 1969 by Bill and then joined by sons Stan and Randy, starting as a small-town company, Herzog has grown to become one of North America’s most respected private rail and heavy/highway construction organizations. In 1987, Herzog founded its motorsports division which started as an off-road racing team in which you could say the rest is history. Their driver, Ricky Johnson, won 6 of 16 events during the 1998 season which led to the SODA (Short Course Off Road Drivers Association) Pro-2 Championship. It was two years earlier however that the team signed on a California native named Jimmie Johnson who took top honors in the SODA. Johnson is now a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and credits the Herzog family for playing a major role in helping launch his racing career. In 2000, after merging with MLB legend Reggie Jackson to form Herzog-Jackson Motorsports, the team competed in NASCAR’s Busch Grand National Series with Jimmie, Todd Bodine and Jeff Green along with Larry Ragland in off-road and the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. Ragland would go on to be inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2016. Following the team’s last year competing in the NASCAR Busch Series in 2005, the Herzog’s turned to NHRA drag racing and were a major associate sponsor of Tony and Cruz Pedregon’s Funny Car teams for nearly a decade. The Pedregon’s won numerous races and two of their four World Championships came under the Herzog banner. In all after a quarter century in racing which concluded in 2015, the Herzog’s owned or sponsored race teams that won championships in SCORE, CORR, SODA and NHRA and have scored victories in such prestigious events as the Baja 1000 and Pikes Peak International Hillclimb.

Special Olympics Area Athlete Of The Year presented by the Hook Family – Tanner Hrenchir Tanner Hrenchir is an institution in the Special Olympics world. Beginning his career at age 9, Hrenchir has now competed in the sports of track &amp; field, softball, bowling, basketball, flag football and powerlifting. His efforts have produced numerous medals at Area, District, Regional and State Competition. He has also taken his talents to the national stage in being selected as a member of Team Missouri at the 2010 Special Olympics National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska coming away with a silver and bronze medal as well as two 4th place finishes. In all, Hrenchir has been a member of the national team three times including just recently where he won a gold medal, two silver medals and bronze in powerlifting at the just completed Orlando games June 5-10. In addition to being an outstanding athlete, Tanner is an outstanding ambassador serving as a Global Messenger for the organization sharing his story to over 5,000 people worldwide and also volunteering numerous hours to Special Olympics Missouri and other local causes.

St. Joseph police officers train regularly to respond to an
active shooter, whether at a business, government building, or school.

Police Chief Chris Connally says the department will set up a
vacant building to train officers to respond to an “active shooter” call.

“So, some of those scenarios we have them see different things
and we put them in situations where they have to make a quick decision, but
they have to make the right decision,” Connally tells host Barry Birr on the
KFEQ Hotline.

The police chief is quick to add making the right decision
quickly isn’t always easy.

“The person who rapidly pulls out their cellphone is different
from the person that is the suspect that they’re trying to track down,” Connally
says. “We put a lot of different things into those scenarios so that officers
can see firsthand and make good decisions.”

Connally says the St. Joseph School District trains at the
building level on how best to respond should the unthinkable actually happen.

Police must think the unthinkable, especially in light of school
shootings, dating back to April of 1999 when Dylan Klebold and Eris Harris
entered the Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado with the intent to
kill. The two shot and killed 13 and wounded 20 before turning their guns on
themselves.

Then, Sandy hook in Newtown, Connecticut and Marjory Stoneman
Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Now, a shooter enters Robb Elementary
School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 19 school children and two teachers.

Connally says these tragic experiences have had a very real
impact on how officers are trained to respond to an “active shooter” call, no
longer securing the area and waiting for SWAT.

“At first, they taught the ideal and then realized that hey,
you know, as incidents occurred trainers observed that there wasn’t always time
or there wasn’t always four (officers),” Connally says. “We didn’t want people
waiting. If you hear the shots being fired, then go, go, go, go.”

Police Chief Chris Connally says much is learned by police
during a debriefing after such tragedies, adding training and public policy need
to be based on the facts gathered from such incidents.

“I read some good information on, actually policy information
from studies that have been done through different institutes funded by the
government, on what gun control policies work, what ones really don’t have an
impact. And it’s funny because most of what you hear is political response, not
evidence-based response.”

The United Way of Greater St. Joseph wants to keep kids reading through the summer and it is currently searching for volunteers to help in the effort. &nbsp;

Director of Community Investment Jodi Flurry says volunteers will read with students in a group setting.&nbsp;

"Every person in the group gets a copy of the book, and so it's group reading where usually it's like a kid takes a page, the next kid takes a page, the volunteer takes a page, and they just go around the circle and they read," Flurry tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And they can encourage each other, they can help with words, it keeps all the kids engaged, and the volunteer is there to keep them on track and help them with any words they might be struggling with."&nbsp;

Each group session will last 45 mins.&nbsp; The United Way is currently seeking volunteers to help with the program this summer. &nbsp;

Flurry says this reading program working with kids provides a good opportunity for youth volunteers.&nbsp;

"So, if there are middle school or high school students that are wanting to volunteer to get involved in the community, this is a really simple way to volunteer," Flurry points out. "Because, it's a short time commitment and it's fun and easy because you're just reading with kids."&nbsp;

Reading Adventure couldn't happen through the pandemic with volunteers unable to come read to students, resulting in a two-year hiatus for the program.&nbsp;

Flurry says last year though, the United Way developed a new way to help get kids books to read. &nbsp;

"We want to help build home libraries, we want books in homes that kids want to read, so we partnered with a lot of different people the main one being Second Harvest and their No Hunger Summer, where every week on a Tuesday kids got to pick out a book to take home and keep, and that's why we were calling for books."&nbsp;

United Way officials are again calling for books to be donated for children ages 6-12 that are new or gently used.&nbsp;

United Way seeking volunteers to help keep kids reading this summer

GENTRY COUNTY —A Missouri teen was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Wednesday in Gentry County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy Cruz driven by a 16-year-old King City boy was southbound on U.S. 169 one half mile south of Stanberry.

The vehicle rear-ended a 2020 Chevy 1500 driven by Gregory E. Dias, 65, Stanberry, who had slowed to make a turn into a private drive.&nbsp;

Grand River EMS transported the teen to Mosaic Life Care. Dias was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Missouri teen hospitalized in St. Joe after rear-end crash

Former Heartland Foundation president Judy Sabbert has written
a book about learning to live again after experiencing tragedy and sorrow.

Sabbert writes about her breast cancer diagnosis, the loss of
her parents, the loss of her son, even her divorce in the book:&nbsp; Daring to Dance Again.

Sabbert says she didn’t just want to share her story, but what
she learned from some difficult experiences.

“And so, a big part of the book is hopefully to provide those
pearls of wisdom that people can relate to,” Sabbert tells host Barry Birr on
the KFEQ Hotline. “Your story may not be the same as mind, but there are similarities
I think that we can find in those stories and those little nuggets of truth
that we experience on a day-to-day basis.”

In the book, Sabbert relates her five-year struggle with
breast cancer, during which she endured six surgeries with an uncertain
outcome.

“I think it makes you aware of the things we often take for
granted in life,” Sabbert says. &nbsp;“When
you have that kind of news presented to you and you don’t know what the
outcomes going to be, you take more time to really pay attention to what some
people might call the ordinary things in life.”

Through it all, Sabbert embraced her Christian faith to get
her through the experiences.

Sabbert uses the subtitle “Pearls of Wisdom for a Soul Filled
Life.” She says she wants to tell about what she learned going through the
difficulties of divorce, the death of loved ones, and a cancer diagnosis.

“The whole reasoning for writing this book is to give hope,
courage, and inspiration to others that may be going through challenging times
in life and to maybe look at things a little differently than maybe they have
in the past.”

Sabbert will appear at the St. Joseph East Hills Mall Library
Thursday afternoon between two and four for a book signing.

Former Heartland Foundation president pens book on overcoming tragedy

The heat isn't stopping anytime soon it seems and with the excessive heat comes the danger of heat-related illnesses. &nbsp;

St. Joseph Health Department Clinic Supervisor Holly Leslie says the two major heat-related illnesses the clinic sees are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. &nbsp;

Leslie says while the danger of heat exhaustion is still high, it is the least severe of the two.

"If you have those symptoms of the clammy skin and the coldness and pale, the sweating and the muscle cramps, those are clinically heat exhaustion," Leslie tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;

Heat stroke, however, is much more severe and is considered a medical emergency. Leslie says you need to pay attention to the symptoms.&nbsp;

"The strong pulse, the headache, the dizziness, those very clinically significant symptoms," Leslie explains. "It is best that you then seek medical treatment."&nbsp;

Leslie says everyone sweats, but you will know you're in a danger zone when things begin to feel different.

"When you're outside and you start to feel cool and clammy, that's a red flag, if you start to be dizzy or have changes in vision, confusion, any of those, those are very big red flags," Leslie says. "The problem with heat related illnesses is that there is no middle ground, it is very much so either you're doing ok or you're having these very big issues." &nbsp;

Leslie says she sees a number of people not taking these high temperatures seriously enough.&nbsp;

"They think oh I've done this before you know this isn't that bad or a lot of times, they say oh I've drank plenty of water," Leslie points out. "Well unfortunately, no matter how much water you drink it doesn't necessarily guarantee that you are going to be safe."&nbsp;

She says another problem is young people not taking things seriously, thinking they won't be affected.&nbsp;

"Heat related illnesses only affect really young people or really old people I've never been sick, I'm healthy," Leslie explains. "Heat doesn't care, heat does not care who you are or where you came from, it will affect you regardless."&nbsp;

Leslie says if you are out in the heat to be sure to stay hydrated with water, not alcohol, soda, or Gatorade, and wear lightweight clothing.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The weather service forecasts a high of 88 today, 95 with a heat index of 102 Thursday, and 96 on Friday.&nbsp;

There is no let-up expected next week with a high of 99 forecasts for Monday and Tuesday.&nbsp;

Health officials warn excessive heat brings dangers of heat related illness

A bicycle ridden by a 17-year-old girl was westbound on Mound Street and failed to stop at the stop sign at 10th Street, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. The two vehicles collided. 

A private vehicle transported the teen to a hospital for an examination, according to Wilson.&nbsp;Police released no additional details.

As criminals make their living trying to take your money and information, scam calls continue to happen every day throughout the year&nbsp;

IRS Spokesman Michael Devine says that's because criminals know how to focus on what’s on people’s minds at any point during the year&nbsp;

During tax season, it's the IRS and your tax refund he says, but what about after the tax season?&nbsp;

"During the rest of the year, anytime something happens that gets the public's attention, a disaster they will shift from taxes to creating fake websites to get you to make donations to them rather than to a legitimate disaster or health agency," Devine tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;

During tax season, Devine says the most common scam the IRS fielded calls about revolved around using Economic Impact payments to get people's information.&nbsp;

"They would lure you into applying for a job and getting your personal information, then they would use that and other stake information to apply for unemployment benefits, maybe in another state," Devine explains. "So, you would get a form 1099-G which would say here's how much unemployment benefits you received from Nebraska or Iowa, even if you'd never been there."&nbsp;

Devine says one of the most common ways people are being scammed is through email, text, and phone scams. &nbsp;

Devine says the whole intention of any emails or texts you may get from the IRS are to scare you. &nbsp;

"They want you to go oh my gosh I'm in trouble with the IRS, these are the guys that got Caponed, what are they going to do to me," " Devine says. "Well, we're not going to do anything, except try and help you."&nbsp;

Devine says however, that the IRS will not email or text you, so that's one sign of a potential scam&nbsp;

He says the IRS also will also not call you, and if you get a call from someone claiming to be the IRS.&nbsp;

"Laugh and hang-up, we're not going to be calling you, we're not going to scare you and threaten you, we're going to work with you," Devine explains.&nbsp;

The only way you will hear from the IRS is through a letter in the mail.&nbsp;

Devine says if you receive any of these texts, calls, or emails, after hanging up or deleting them, if you fear what they say is legitimate you should reach out to the IRS.&nbsp;

Scam calls won't stop just because tax season is over IRS officials warn

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett says his department is
using a drone to track down fugitives and locate lost citizens, as well as to
investigate crime scenes.

Puett says the department used seized drug money to pay for
the drone, which cost more than $10,000.

“We’ve had a drone for a little while,” Puett tells host Barry
Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “It took us a little while to get it online, because
of the training and the policies and stuff. And the city has one. Drones have
become pretty popular, because they’re very effective in lots of applications.”

Buchanan County got the drone up in the air to help the State
Highway Patrol attempt to track two men who escaped custody after a high-speed
chase on I-29 earlier this month. 

Puett says his department is learning the best way to use a

Buchanan County Sheriff's Dept. learning multiple ways to use drone

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after a 2-state chase.

Early Monday, Richardson County Nebraska deputies engaged in a vehicle pursuit. Speeds reached over 100 mile per hour and continued into Brown County Kansas, according to a media&nbsp; release.

Brown County Deputies, were able to spike the driver's front tire successfully. Once the vehicle finally came to a stop, and the driver identified as 33-year-old Nathan Wagner of Ashland, Nebraska was taken into custody.

Deputies learned the vehicle had been stolen out of Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;Wagner had multiple warrants for his arrest and was booked into the Brown County jail on requested charges of theft, driving while license cancelled/ revoked and reckless driving, according to online jail records.

&nbsp;Wagner will be extradited back to Nebraska, where he will face additional requested charges of Theft by Receiving Stolen Property, Flight to Avoid Arrest, Willful Reckless Driving, Driving Revoked, Driving Left of Center, Fail to use Turn Signal, Defective Vehicle Lighting, Speeding and and Fictitious Plates, according to the sheriff's office.

Suspect jailed after 2-state, 100-mph chase

HARRISON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Monday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2014 GMC Acadia driven by Lidia M. Hart, 37, Bethany, was northbound on Marble Road around a curve two miles west of Bethany.

The front drivers side of the GMC struck the front drivers side of a southbound 2020 Jeep Compass driven by Ofir Tau, 23, St. Joseph.

NTA ambulance transported Hart to Harrison County Community Hospital. Tau refused treatment at the scene. Hart was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Woman from Bethany hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

A Kansas City man has been charged in connection with a series
of arsons near Polo; one that was fatal.

Caldwell County Sheriff Mitchell Allen reports in a news
release the department has arrested 27-year-old Harold Edwards, Jr. on three
counts of arson, three counts of burglary, and three counts property damage in
connection with the three house fires set May 10th in rural Polo.

The department reports deputies from Caldwell and Clay
Counties arrested Edwards Friday evening.

Edwards is being held without bond in the Caldwell County
jail.

All three fires occurred within a two-hour period on the same
road. Firefighters found the body of 96-year-old Lorene Fickess in the charred
remains of one of the fires. The other two homes were vacant.

Caldwell County officials say additional charges could be
added.

Kansas City man arrested in connection with rural Polo fires

A major piece of legislation that determines how the Army
Corps of Engineers manages the Missouri River has passed the U.S. House.

Northern Missouri Congressman Sam Graves, the top Republican
on the House Transportation Committee, says part of the Water Resources
Development Act limits the number of special habitat areas the Corps can build along
the lower Missouri River for the endangered pallid sturgeon.

“They wanted to build 10 more on top of what they have already
done,” Graves tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “And we have said, look, we’re done
spending money on this until you can actually prove that they work. So, we
completely cut them off. We’re going to allow two to be built and no more. If
they can prove that they work, then we’ll revisit that.”

Critics of what the Corps of Engineers calls
Interception-Rearing Complexes say they negatively impact flood control and
navigation on the Missouri River, which those same critics contend should be
the top priorities of the Corps as it manages the river. The bill requires the federal government to count all mitigation lands along the Missouri River
acquired with federal funds to be counted toward the Bank Stabilization and Navigation
Fish and Wildlife Mitigation Project’s goal of 166,000 acres.

The act also lifts an expensive inspection requirement for
local levee districts. Graves claims a requirement in federal regulation could
force local levee districts to spend up to $100,000 to perform a drone
inspection of their levees to ensure they are in compliance with Corps of
Engineers regulations. The legislation would require the Corps to offset the expense of compliance.

Graves says a provision allows the Corps to experiment with a
program on the lower Missouri River basin that has reduced bank erosion
upstream. Graves says efforts to stop erosion in the past have been a little
too successful.

“Well, that creates a problem, because now less sediment is
flowing through the river and that sediment used to be deposited on the river
banks,” according to Graves. “When you solve that problem, when we put less
sediment in the river, now all of the sudden you have a problem, because the
banks are eroding and it’s getting worse and worse and worse, particularly on
the lower Missouri River.”

The bill would allow the Corps to create a demonstration program based on a successful program used on the upper Missouri River.

St. Joseph could benefit greatly from the bill.

A provision in WRDA allocates $50 million for wastewater,
water, and sewer projects in northern Missouri. Half of the total is designated
to help St. Joseph comply with EPA mandates for its sewer system.

“The EPA continues to put new requirements and regulations on our
waste treatment facilities and the citizens of St. Joe are paying more and more
and more,” Graves says. “In fact, it’s gone up a huge amount since 2009. I
think, sewer rates in St. Joe have tripled since 2009.”

Money also is provided for sewer and stormwater projects in
Camden Point, Smithville, Excelsior Springs, and Hannibal.

The provision still must be approved by the Senate and pass
through the appropriation process.

Water resources bill could have big impact on Missouri River, St. Joseph sewer system

A 46-year-old St. Joseph man has been charged with 1st
degree domestic assault in the stabbing and wounding of another St. Joseph man
Friday evening.

The St. Joseph Police Department reports David Wayne Rhoades
has been charged in the stabbing of 64-year-old Marty Forrest.

degree domestic assault in the stabbing and wounding of another St. Joseph man
Friday evening.The St. Joseph Police Department reports David Wayne Rhoades
has been charged in the stabbing of 64-year-old Marty Forrest.The two are related.St. Joseph police report officers responded to the 2800 block of South 20th Street early Friday evening after dispatchers
received an emergency call about a possible stabbing.&nbsp; Police allege that Rhoades pulled a knife and
stabbed Forrest during an argument.Forrest was taken to the hospital where he is listed in stable
condition.Police took Rhoades into custody.
