A 33-year-old St. Joseph man has pleaded guilty to second degree murder
in a stabbing death in his apartment last year.

Buchanan County Prosecutor Ron Holliday reports Nicholas Piper entered a
plea of guilty to murder in the second degree in the death of a 45-year-old James
Tittsworth at 905 S. 14th Street April 26th of last year.

A St. Joseph police detective reported in the probable cause statement
that Piper entered the apartment armed with two knives and stabbed Tittsworth
in the chest several times. Tittsworth was taken to the Mosaic Life Care St.
Joseph hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A second-degree murder charge has been filed against a
24-year-old St. Joseph man in the shooting death of 37-year-old Santos Jackson.

Buchanan County Prosecutor Ron Holliday filed the charge
against Tucker James Autenrieth.

St. Joseph police found Jackson dead of a single gunshot wound
to the back of the head Wednesday. In the probable cause statement filed in the
case, St. Joseph police say officers responded to a possible homicide call at
705 N. 9th Street. Officers discovered blood and cleaning agents in
the residence and obtained a search warrant.

Officers found the body of Jackson inside. The owner
identified Autenrieth as the person who killed Jackson on Monday.

Autenrieth told officers Jackson arrived at the residence
armed with a .45 pistol and started a fight. When Jackson attempted to enter,
Autenrieth said he struck him on the back of the neck with a machete, knocking
him to the ground. Jackson crawled toward the firearm he had dropped.
Autenrieth told officers he started kicking him in the head and body, then
picked up the gun and fired a single shot to the back of the head. Autenrieth
later wrapped the victim’s body in plastic and attempted to use bleach to clean
up the scene, according to the probable cause statement.

Bethany motel closes during investigation of Legionnaires' disease

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas teen on drug and theft allegations.

Just before 11p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to the Walmart Store at 1920 U.S.73 in Atchison to investigate a theft, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

It was determined that a suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Kaleb Marshall, had stolen $221 in merchandise that included a backpack and clothing. 

The suspect left the area in a vehicle. Authorities issued an alert for that vehicle and a short time later sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle at 262nd and Ottawa Road, according to Wilson.

Officers arrested Marshall for the theft at Walmart and subsequently found methamphetamine on his person.

Mosaic Life Care will require all staff to be vaccinated
against COVID-19.

Mosaic CEO, Dr. Mark Laney, made the announcement late
Wednesday afternoon.

“We are announcing today that we are taking the first steps in
requiring vaccination for all of our caregivers here at Mosaic,” Laney told
reporters during a news conference at the St. Joseph hospital.

The vaccination requirement will be implemented incrementally
with the target of having all staff vaccinated by the end of the year. Mosaic
has a total of 4,500 employees at its St. Joseph, Maryville, and Albany
locations.

Laney says Mosaic has been treating between 40-to-60 COVID-19
patients daily. Thirty caregivers have contracted COVID.

“So, this is continuing to be an extreme challenge for us. We’ve
been very busy and we feel that now is the right time to move forward with
this,” Laney stated. “We have great confidence in the efficacy and the safety
of the vaccine.”

Laney said the vaccination requirement will be rolled out
incrementally.

All volunteers and new hires at Mosaic will have to be
vaccinated against COVID-19, beginning September 13th. Mosaic hopes
of have all doctors and administrators vaccinated by the beginning of November.
The process of vaccinating the entire staff should be completed by the end of
the year.

HOLT COUNTY—Six people were injured in an accident just before 4:30a.m. Wednesday in Holt County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Freigtliner semi driven by Khamidjon Murodov, 44, Brooklyn, New York, was southbound on Interstate 29 just north of Hickory Township.

The semi rear-ended a 2004 Ford motorhome driven by Timothy P. Rasta, 54, Clearfield, Utah.

Six adult passengers in the motorhome were transported to Mosaic Life Care. Rasta and Murodov were not injured. The drivers and one of the passengers was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

6 hospitalized after semi rear-ends motorhome

The Kansas City Chiefs concluded their final training camp practice of 2021 on Wednesday morning&nbsp; - their 16th practice over the last 22 days at Missouri Western.

Head coach Andy Reid had high praise for the University and the city for their hospitality in that time.

"We appreciate the people here," Reid said. "They did a great job, which they always do. We just appreciate the hospitality that St. Joe, the city, and Missouri Western State University has given us."

In terms of on-the-field work, Reid was very pleased with the effort his team has shown.

"Job well done," Reid told his team, "for what we needed to get done here. We've got to keep going. It's not done here, but we have to keep rolling. Their effort and attitude and everything was good and I appreciated that. As did the coaches."

Defensive end Chris Jones&nbsp;says the team learned a lot about themselves, and about each other, over the last three weeks, and coming back to St. Joseph was a huge benefit.

"I think it was great for us," Jones said. "To build that chemistry amongst the locker room and also on the field. When you have to spend 17-18 days together, you learn a lot about each other, you know?"

Training camp was confined to Kansas City without fans last year due to COVID-19. While Jones appreciated being back, he and the rest of the team are eager to head home.

"St. Joe has been amazing to us," Jones said. "But, I think it's about time for my own house, you know? I love the dorms. Amazing program that (Missouri Western) is running here, the faculty, staff and cafeteria has been amazing, and the people around the facility have been amazing. I appreciate Missouri Western for giving us the opportunity to come back."

This marked the 11th year of training camp in St. Joseph. The Chiefs now head back to Kansas City as they prepare for the next preseason game this Friday at Arizona. Kick off in that game is set for 7 p.m.

Linebacker Willie Gay, who didn't get to play last Saturday against San Francisco, is now feeling 100 percent coming out of concussion protocol.

He's excited to play again, and just wants himself and others in his position group to have fun and make plays.

"I just want to see guys having fun," Gay stated. "Don't think too much on it. Don't think too much about not messing up. Just go play ball and have fun. Enjoy the moment."

Coach Reid said Wednesday that the starters will play in the first half, with second and third-team players entering during the second half.

The Chiefs leave St. Joseph fairly healthy. The only players who didn't practice at all Wednesday were Laurent Duvarney-Tardif (hand), Kyle Long (knee) and Malik Herring (knee).

Reid said both Long and LDT are "doing well" in their current rehab.

Frank Clark (hamstring) and Derrick Nnadi (hip flexor) began practice, but both left early. Reid said neither injury is serious or long-term.

With Clark and Nnadi sidelined, Mike Danna and Khalen Saunders saw reps with the first-team defense Wednesday.

This will obviously be something to watch moving forward, but Mike Remmers ended camp getting most of the reps with the second offense at left tackle, while rookie Lucas Niang has assumed starting right tackle duties for now.

Niang is overall happy with how his position group has progressed over the last few weeks.

"We've come together fast," he said. "We've got a ways to go, but we're doing a good job. Everybody is communicating, getting on the same page. We're gelling as a group, so that's something to look forward to."

Chiefs thank MWSU, St. Joseph for hospitality as training camp concludes Wednesday

Tourists to St. Joseph often come to see where the Pony
Express started, visiting the Patee House and the Pony Express National Museum.

On Tuesday, the Pony Express Museum hosted a special visitor.

Gov. Mike Parson paid a visit as part of his Bicentennial Tour
of Missouri, stating it’s a privilege to tour the state and get first-hand
presentations of some of its history.

“It’s pretty neat to be able to go across the state of
Missouri and celebrate 200 years here in our state, just knowing how much St.
Joe, what their part has played in those 200 years and today we’re here talking
about the Pony Express that we all as kids growing up always knew about the Pony
Express and what it really meant to our nation,” Parson told reporters after
his tour.

Parson arrived in St. Joseph after touring the J.C. Penny
Museum in Hamilton, the birthplace of the retail giant.

Parson points out Missouri is known of its famous natives,
such as Mark Twain, Walter Cronkite, and Gen. John Pershing, but also for its
famous animals, such as Old Drum and Jim the Wonder Dog.

That’s the point the governor attempts to get across in this
tour. It’s not just informative. It’s not just history. It’s fun to learn about
Missouri, its 200 years of statehood, and even the history before it officially
became the 24th state on August 10th of 1821.

Parson says he’s learned things about Missouri on this tour he
didn’t know.

“Most certainly,” Parson responded. “We were just walking through
the museum here just a little bit ago, there was a young man, Mr. Fisher, was
actually one of the early Pony Express riders and you think, okay, so where
does his family tree go and where does it end?”

The governor refers to William “Billy” Fisher, the great
grandfather of NASA mission specialist William Fisher II who took a collection
of Pony Express memorabilia up in space on the space shuttle Discovery.

“So, you think of what started with a young man riding a horse,
setting the stage for our country, and then all of the sudden you have somebody
in his family becomes an astronaut,” Parson said. “One of the things you really
appreciate going around to these Missouri towns across the state, all of us,
you start thinking back to your family tree a little bit.&nbsp; You start thinking about your parents and
your grandparents and all the things that have occurred in our state over
history and the 200 years we’re celebrating and you just realize how remarkable
things were and what people went through to be where we’re at today.”

Parson says Missourians have much to celebrate on its 200th
birthday.

“I think that’s the pride you have of being a Missourian,”
Parson stated. “I know when I did my two tours of duty in the Army and I stepped
off on the tarmac in Springfield, I said I would never leave this state again,
simply because I love the people of this state and I love this state. And this
is just one of the fine examples, you get to showcase who we are and I really
do believe we’re the heart and soul of this country right here in Missouri.”

Gov. Parson Bicentennial tour takes him to St. Joseph

The Kansas City Chiefs have just one training camp practice left on Wednesday before they head back to their team facilities in Kansas City. 

While it’s been an enjoyable experience for the team and the fans, special teams coach Dave Toub is ready to get home.

"St. Joe is great," Toub reiterated. "I'm 59 years old, and I'm sleeping in a dorm room. You know, it's kind of hard."

Running backs coach Greg Lewis said much the same. 

"I'm enjoying it up here in St. Joe," said Lewis, who made the switch from receivers coach to running backs coach this offseason. "Good team building, but honestly I do want to get home and see my kids and my wife. The players probably do, too, but we still have work to do and need to come out (Wednesday) and finish up strong."

Training camp began July 28, and will have spanned 16 practices over a 22-day period.

The Chiefs practiced in full pads for just over two hours Tuesday. Defensive end Frank Clark left practice early with a hamstring. Jarran Reed left early due to cramping. Demone Harris (oblique) and Derrick Nnadi (hip) were also pulled from practice early.

Coming into Tuesday, the Chiefs had gotten mostly healthy. The only three who didn't practice at all Tuesday were Laurent Duvarney-Tardif (hand), Kyle Long (knee) and Malik Herring (knee).

The Chiefs announced a flurry of roster moves Tuesday to get their number down to 85 players, per NFL rules.

Receiver Chad Williams was released, while corner Manny Patterson, tight end Evan Baylis and receiver Antonio Callaway have all been waived. Running back Elijah McGuire has been placed on injured reserve. 

One area where future cuts may have to be made is offensive line, where many young guys are competing for a roster spot and playing time.

 Offensive line coach Andy Heck says the competition there has been solid, and that could make decisions difficult.

"We have a lot of depth," Heck said, "particularly at those inside center/guard positions, and we have a lot of guys who I think belong in this league, and I'm not sure how many of them are going to be able to make this team. So, it's great competition there. It's a good problem to have, though."

The Chiefs will have to cut five more players by next Tuesday and be down to 53 on the active roster by August 31.

A second-year pro out of Michigan, Danna has had a solid camp and got the chance to play with the first-team defense late in Tuesday's practice after Clark and Nnadi were sidelined.

Alex Okafor also saw some first-team reps at DE Tuesday.

Defensive line coach Brendan Daly says Danna has turned a corner this camp.

"He's expanded his role," Daly said of Danna. "He's doing some different things for us. He's moving around to some different spots, and he's been able to handle it. He's handled a little bit more communication roles, so he's hit that mark."

Receivers coach Joe Bleymaier, who's entering his first season in that role, gave credit where credit is due Tuesday, pointing out how impressive receiver Mecole Hardman has been this camp.

"Mecole is incredibly smart," Bleymaier said. "He's obviously incredibly athletic. He's taken coaching and he's taken the quarterbacks' input, the coaching staff's input on what he's doing and he's really applied it to the field."

Bleymaier also credited receiver Marcus Kemp saying, "he knows the offense, he knows where to be and how to get there."

Coach Daly says the defensive staff will continue to utilize Chris Jones at both defensive tackle and defensive end. Jones got beat by rookie Trey Smith early in one-on-one blocking drills Tuesday, but then buried the rookie on the second go-round.

Rookie safety Zayne Anderson (BYU) got some time with the first-team defense Tuesday. Another rookie, corner Devon Key (Western Kentucky)&nbsp; has been fighting to keep a roster spot in the secondary as well.

Both Key and Anderson were signed as undrafted free agents.

Chiefs make first roster moves Tuesday, eyeing the end of training camp in St. Joseph

St. Joseph celebrates Missouri’s 200th birthday
this weekend with the Steam to S.T.E.A.M. festival at Civic Center Park on the
south side of City Hall.

The festival features food, music, and inter-active exhibits
taking a look back to when the steamboat ruled the Missouri River and a look
forward to what S.T.E.A.M. might bring us; that is, science, technology,
engineering, arts, and mathematics.

The Director of the Missouri Western Office of Applied
Learning, Mike Ducey, says arts fit with the rest better than you might think.

“There are aspects of the arts that employ mathematical
principles to develop the artwork that they present,” Ducey tells host Barry
Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “In fact, there are a lot of pieces of works of art on
the Missouri Western campus that highlight that, just as an example.”

It begins Friday evening at five o’clock and run until nine
that evening. It picks up at 10 o’clock Saturday morning and, again, wraps up
at 9pm.

Kathy Reno with the Allied Arts Council of St. Joseph says the
festival will feature St. Joseph businesses with unconventional exhibits, such
as one by Hillyard.

“Since Hillyard’s known for basketball, (Hillyard is) going to
have their basketball hoop set up, one of the old-fashioned kind, and show how
they did that gym floor finish,” Reno says.

The S.T.E.A.M. Activity and Innovation Zone provides an
interactive experience for kids and adults alike, including such activities from
creating shaving cream art to playing a game of giant Jenga.

Reno says local musicians will be performing throughout the
festival.

“And we’ve asked all the artists to talk about the history
behind whatever song they play; how does it relate to our theme? So, to celebrate
all things Missouri and all things St. Joe is our goal.”

Reno with the Allied Arts Council says the festival will mix
information with food and fun.

“We’re going to celebrate Missouri’s birthday and we’re going
to have a little barbecue, because it’s not a festival without barbecue, and a
few other things,” Reno says. “We tried to bring together a mix of local
cuisine. So, you can try that, too.”

The St. Joseph 2021: From Steam to S.T.E.A.M. festival begins
Friday evening at five o’clock at Civic Center Park, locating on the south side
of St. Joseph City Hall, 1100 Frederick Avenue. It runs Friday from 5pm to 9pm
and Saturday 10am to 9pm. It is free and open to the public.

St. Joseph reports an additional COVID death along with drop in positivity rate

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged child sex crimes.

On Friday, police conducted an investigation involving a female victim under the age of 14 and crimes committed when the victim was under the age of 16, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Police arrested&nbsp;CJ Lonnie McPhie, 36, Atchison, on requested charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, indecent liberties with a child, criminal sodomy, and electronic solicitation, according to Wilson. McPhie is being held on a $100,000 bond.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Zachary&nbsp; &nbsp;A. Carr, 22, La Plata, was eastbound on Route B two miles north of Alanthus Grove.

The driver failed to negotiate a curve. The motorcycle began to skid and overturned.&nbsp; Grand River EMS transported Carr to Mosaic Life Care. He was wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

A resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic has prompted a change
at the St. Joseph public health clinic.

Those going to the Health
Department Clinic at the Patee Market Health Center, 904 South 10th
Street, will
not be allowed to wait at the clinic, but instead will have to wait in their
cars before getting their vaccinations, including the COVID-19 vaccination.

Clinic Supervisor Connie Werner advises parents to keep up on
the latest and not wait on vaccinations.

“Be as educated as possible. Be in communication with your
school,” Werner tells St. Joseph Post. “Make sure that if you have the ability
to have the vaccination and for your children to have the vaccination, to get
those done as well. The health department is not the only resource for the
COVID vaccine. There are multiple pharmacies and Mosaic offering the vaccine as
well. So, we want people to not wait until the last minute. That typically
happens each year.”

Between now and the 27th, the public health clinic is
busy with school children and students getting all their immunizations prior to
the start of school.

Services at the public health clinic are provided on a
first-come, first-served basis from 8-to-11 in the morning and 1-to-4 in the
afternoon.

Parents are asked to bring only two children at a time. The
temporary changes will be in place through the 27th in anticipation
of increased traffic due to back-to-school needs.

Those who can wait on shots are asked to postpone their visit
until the school rush is over, but Werner says if you need vaccinations or
tests, don’t put it off.

“For nursing students who need TB tests, for somebody who
really wants a COVID vaccine and they want to come to us, you are welcome to
come to us, just be aware that there will be increased traffic, a lot more
people coming, and so the wait times will be increased,” Werner says. “And we
will be having people wait in their cars due to the volume of clients.”

Werner asks those seeking services from the public clinic to
be patient.

“Just be aware of how busy it is,” Werner cautions. “Be aware
of how crowded it is and just do anything you can to make it as efficient as
possible.”

Mosaic reports drop in COVID hospitalizations

DONIPHAN COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just before 3p.m. Saturday in Doniphan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 750 Brute Force ATV driven by Eli Whitaker, 26, Atchison, and a 2020 Honda Talon UTV driven by Jarret Scholz, 21, Atchison, were traveling southeast on Kansas 7 Highway crossing the Wolf River Bridge three miles east of Highland.

&nbsp;The Honda UTV slowed for traffic. The Brute Force ATV did not slow. The driver swerved to avoid a collision. The Brute Force ATV clipped the rear of the Honda UTV and overturned into the path of a northwest bound 2005 Mercury Sable driven by Donna Caples, 72, St. Joseph. The car struck the ATV.&nbsp;

Whitaker was pronounce dead at the scene and was transported to Harmon-Rohde Funeral Home.

Scholz, a passenger on the Honda, Caples and two passengers in the Mercury were not injured. Whitaker, Scholz&nbsp; and the passenger on the Honda were not wearing helmets, according to the KHP.&nbsp; The driver and occupants of the Mercury were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

DONIPHAN COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just before 3p.m. Saturday in Doniphan County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 750 Brute Force ATV driven by Eli Whitaker, 26, Atchison, and a 2020 Honda Talon UTV driven by Jarret Scholz, 21, Atchison, were traveling southeast on Kansas 7 Highway crossing the Wolf River Bridge three miles east of Highland.&nbsp;The Honda UTV slowed for traffic. The Brute Force ATV did not slow. The driver swerved to avoid a collision. The Brute Force ATV clipped the rear of the Honda UTV and overturned into the path of a northwest bound 2005 Mercury Sable driven by Donna Caples, 72, St. Joseph. The car struck the ATV.&nbsp;Whitaker was pronounce dead at the scene and was transported to Harmon-Rohde Funeral Home.Scholz, a passenger on the Honda, Caples and two passengers in the Mercury were not injured. Whitaker, Scholz&nbsp; and the passenger on the Honda were not wearing helmets, according to the KHP.&nbsp; The driver and occupants of the Mercury were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Atchison man dies after car strikes ATV

CLINTON COUNTY—A St. Joseph man was injured in an accident just after 10p.m. Saturday in Clinton County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Polaris Sportsman driven by Derrick L. Fox, 28, St. Joseph, was eastbound on 268th two miles south of Gower.

The driver lost control of the vehicle. It traveled off the road and overturned. Tri-County Ambulance transported Fox to Mosaic Life Care. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

HARRISON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 4p.m. in Harrison County.&nbsp;

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Harley Davidson driven by Timothy M. Brunsworth, 53, Des Moines, IA., was westbound on Route N three miles east of Blythdle.

The driver failed to negotiate a cure. The motorcycle traveled off the road, the driver overcorrected, returned to the road and both driver and passenger were ejected.

NTA ambulance transported Brunsworth to Harrison County Community Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

Driver injured after motorcycle accident 

NODAWAY COUNTY—A Missouri man was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Saturday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Dodge Ram driven by Dale L. Wescott, 57, Lone Jack, was southbound on U.S. 71 and failed to yield after stopping at the intersection of Highway CC a mile north of Maryville.

The Dodge traveled into the path of a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country driven by Lloyd R. Nelson, 81, Skidmore.

Nodaway County EMS transported Nelson to Mosaic in Maryville. Wescott was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

A mattress from the bed of the pickup became unsecured, slid across the road and struck a southbound 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Kathryn L. Silvestre, 41, Shenandoah, Iowa.&nbsp;

Silvestre was ejected from the motorcycle. Nodaway County EMS transported her to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. She was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

NODAWAY COUNTY—Three people were injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Friday in Nodaway County.The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Ford F150 driven by Makenzie M. Cobb, 27, Maryville, was southbound on Hawk Road approaching U.S. 71.&nbsp;The pickup failed to yield to a westbound to westbound 2014 Jeep Cherokee driven by Shoba M. Brown, 74, Maryville, after stopping at the stop sign.The pickup started to turn east and struck the jeep head-on in the eastbound lane of U.S. 71.Three passengers in the jeep were injured. Life-Flight air ambulance transported Bridget A. Brown, 63, Maryville, to Mosaic in St. Joseph. Nodaway County ambulance transported 77-year-old Karen E. Fulton and 81-year-old Richard M. Fulton both of Maryville to Mosaic in St. Joseph. The drivers were not injured. Bridget Brown was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.
