BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Just after 10:35 p.m. Saturday, a sheriff's deputy initiated a traffic stop on U.S. 36 near Raccoon Road for a defective tail light.&nbsp;

Deputies arrested the passenger Maureen Benedict 69, St Joseph, on requested&nbsp;charges of Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Meth and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Vilsack to keynote Commodity Classic

If you are preparing to use a tax preparer this tax season officials with the IRS encourage you to do your homework and protect yourself. &nbsp;

IRS spokesman Michael Devine says the great majority of tax professionals are just that, tax professionals, but then there are criminals.&nbsp;

"There are people who pretend to be, you know, tax preparers, we call them sometimes ghost preparers," Devine tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "These are people who will say I'll do your tax return, I'll print it out, I'll give it to you, you pay me, you sign the return, and then you mail it in, their fingerprints on at that return, probably literally."&nbsp;

Devine says to remember that when you sign your tax return that no matter who prepared your forms, you are responsible for all the information that you file.&nbsp;

Devine warns everyone that fraudulent tax preparers, in searching for more money, could sign you up for things you don't qualify for.&nbsp; He says when the IRS sees those problems, they won't come for the tax preparer&nbsp;

"We're going to come to you," Devine says. "So, you just need to be very careful with these tax people, do they know what they're doing, have they been in business a long time, are they a CPA or enrolled agent, do they have special credentials?"&nbsp;

Devine says in researching tax preparers you should talk to friends and not go to the first person you see to be careful with your information&nbsp;

In fact, Devine says when researching tax preparers choose one like you would your dentist or your car mechanic.&nbsp;

"You want them to be qualified to do what you're paying them to do, have they been in business a long time, are they current on tax law, are they going to be open all year in case you have a question in August when you get a notice from the IRS can you go back and talk to them about it?" Devine questions. "So, there's lots of things you can do."&nbsp;

Devine said when you should also ask how much a tax preparer might charge you, and if they say their fee is based on the size of your return, to turn and walk away.&nbsp;

Look out for the con artists this tax season

Global food costs moved lower again for the 11th consecutive month. 

The Financial Post says while consumers are still spending more for food, prices are at their lowest level in the last 17 months. 

The UN Food and Agricultural Organization’s Food Price Index dropped 0.6 percent in February, the longest string of lower food prices in 30 years. 

The index averaged 129.8 points last month, dropping from 130.6 in January. Last month’s drop was driven primarily by cooking oils and dairy. The overall index is down 19 percent from a record set last year when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted grain exports around the world. 

The FAO says sugar prices rose last month, while meat and grains were almost identical to the previous month. The Vegetable Oil Price Index dropped almost five points to 135.9 in February, while the dairy index was down 3.6 points, or 2.7 percent, to 131.3.

HARRISON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Sunday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Nissan Frontier driven by Jenny L. Lotton, 30, Anderson, was northbound on Interstate 35 eight miles south of Bethany.

The pickup left the west side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle overturned, returned to the road and rolled off the east side of the road.

NTA ambulance transported Lotton to Harrison County Community Hospital and a passenger Luis R. Gutieerrez, 30, New Britain, to Cameron Regional Medical Center. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

The GMC rear-ended a 2014 Ford Focus driven by Blake M. Ommen, 20, Parkville. The impact pushed the Ford into the rear of a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by Neil E. Baker, 41, Omaha, Nebraska. The Toyota then rear-ended a 2018 Acura MDX driven by Debora J. Smith, 65, Country Club.&nbsp;

Buchanan County EMS transported Ommen, Allison and a passenger in the pickup Austin L. Beck, 22, Beatrice, Nebraska to Mosaic Life Care. Smith was not injured. Allison and Beck were not wearing a seat belts, according to the MSHP.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Polaris UTV driven by a 17-year-old boy from Cameron was eastbound on NE 336th four miles south of Cameron.

The driver lost control of the vehicle. It traveled off the north side of the road and rolled. Cameron Ambulance transported the teen to Liberty Hospital.&nbsp;

The Harley Davidson then struck a 2003 Cadillac CTS driven by Trisha D. Williams, 29, St. Joseph.

EMS transported Misner to Mosaic Life Care. The other drivers were not injured.&nbsp; Misner was wearing a helmet and Wartenbee and Williams were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

St. Joseph man injured after 3-vehicle crash

NODAWAY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 7p.m. Friday in Nodaway County.

The Missoui State Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Ford Focus driven by Maryann R. Johnson, 21, Liberty, was eastbound stopped at the intersection Business 71 and U.S. 71 one half mile northeast of Maryville.

The Ford pulled into the path of a southbound 2010 Cadillac SRX driven by Benjamin S. Farrell, 56, Maryille. The Cadillac struck the drivers side of the Ford.

A private vehicle transported Johnson and a passenger in the Cadillac Beverly S. Farrell to Mosaic in Maryville. Benjamin Farrell was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

On Thursday, police arrested 18-year-old Michele R. Molt of Cummings on a Community Corrections detain order.&nbsp;

In January, she was jailed on a requested charges that included a theft of a firearm, according to online jail records.

Police: Kan. woman of accused firearm theft is back in custody

St. Joseph City Councilmembers will be reviewing the fees the city charges to the tenants of the Missouri Theatre complex.&nbsp;

A special committee of the council suggests phasing in a different rent structure that would leave two of the larger spaces for the Symphony and Allied Arts. &nbsp;

Councilmember-at-Large Jeff Schomburg isn't sure that the arts district is being used as effectively as it should be. &nbsp;

"The Allied Arts and the different performing arts and the Missouri Theatre they do rent out some of those spaces down there," Schomburg tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "But we do have some spaces that I think are being utilized but not managed right."&nbsp;

A committee assessment of the situation suggests the city is losing more than $100,000 in potential rent and an additional $30,000 in potential sales tax revenue if rented out as retail space. &nbsp;

Schomburg says the city was losing money due to the old structure charging $25 rent plus utilities.&nbsp;

"Now if we charge rent for 700, pay their utilities, we've got about maybe roughly four of five hundred dollars in there that we can put that money towards maintenance to upkeep those buildings," Schomburg says. "Because obviously you may have a pipe break or flooring needs to be redone and all that so that money can be reinvested back into that."&nbsp;

The city council will hold a work session on Monday to hear input on the assessment and the plan for the new rental structure.&nbsp;

Schomburg says input from the public and tenants will be highly encouraged during the work session.&nbsp;

"You've got to have input, I mean if you just try to make a decision on your own it's probably not going to be the right decision," Schomburg explains. "So, you've got to be a listener, you've got to be a good listener, and listen to what they're saying and then come up with the best solution for that problem or situation."&nbsp;

Schomburg says there is no timeline currently for when the project could be enacted.&nbsp;

Council considering changes to rent at the Missouri Theatre complex

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — New mothers in Missouri could gain Medicaid health care coverage for up to a year under legislation passed Thursday by the state Senate, part of a national movement of expanded care that began during the coronavirus pandemic.

The bill also would extend coverage to those who have miscarriages or abortions necessary to save their lives. Senators passed the legislation only after inserting wording intended to exclude women who get elective abortions. Missouri has banned most abortions since June.

<a href="https://senate.mo.gov/23info/pdf-bill/perf/SB45.pdf">The legislation</a>&nbsp;seeks to add Missouri to a growing list of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kff.org/medicaid/issue-brief/medicaid-postpartum-coverage-extension-tracker/">28 states and the District of Columbia</a>&nbsp;that have extended Medicaid health care coverage from the typical 60 days up to 12 months after a woman gives birth. The option was made possible under a pandemic relief law signed by President Joe Biden in 2021.

Supporters say it's an important means of keeping both the mother and infant healthy, and of cutting down on mortality rates among new moms.

The Missouri bill, which passed 27-4, now goes to the House for consideration, where a committee endorsed a different version earlier this week. The House bill contains no wording regarding abortions. Both legislative chambers must pass the same version before their session ends in mid-May for a bill to go to the governor for approval.

Democratic Sen. Tracy McCreery of St. Louis County, who voted against the Senate bill, called the abortion-related exclusion a “poison pill” that could jeopardize the necessary approval from the federal Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services.

“It really is a form of government policing and surveillance over low-income women, and it is unacceptable,” McCreery said after the vote.

The Senate bill states that the 12 months of Medicaid coverage begins on “on the last day of the woman's pregnancy.” It doesn't specifically mention “abortion” but instead says “no woman who knowingly receives services that are in violation of state law shall be eligible."

Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden, a Columbia Republican, said he didn't believe the wording was necessary. But he said some Republicans wanted it to prevent Missouri residents who undergo abortions in other states from qualifying for the extended 12 months of Medicaid.

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for an alleged domestic incident.

On Wednesday, police arrested 25-year-old&nbsp;Colton L. Meyer of Atchison on a District Court warrant for domestic battery that occurred on June 20, 2022 in the 1500 block Applegate Drive in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

In 2022, police arrested him for an alleged probation violation, for allegedly knowingly violating a protections of abuse order and domestic battery, according to online jail records.

A 15-year-old St. Joseph boy has been charged with 1st
Degree Involuntary Manslaughter in the death of another teenager Tuesday night.

The 5th Circuit Juvenile Office confirms the
teenager has been charged in the fatal shooting which occurred shortly after
seven o’clock Tuesday night in the 800 block of Mason Road. The teen is being
held by juvenile authorities.

St. Joseph police report the 15-year-old shot and fatally

Hillyard Technical Center is expanding. &nbsp;

The vo-tech school which has been a part of the St. Joseph community since 1943 will be adding space to help serve more students. &nbsp;

St. Joseph School Superintendent Gabe Edgar says the expansion has been a long time coming.&nbsp;

"It's really going to be great for the community, there's a lot of support out there, to be honest with you I think Hillyard's the biggest gym that we have here in St. Joseph," Edgar tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. "And we have to do a good job of marketing that and making sure that we have everything there in regards to that, and so we're excited."&nbsp;

The expansion will add 22,000 square feet of space to help bring in more students to the vo-tech school.&nbsp;

Edgar says currently students are being turned away from programs due to the lack of space. &nbsp;

"Our programs right now that we have to turn students away big time is welding, we had to turn away about 60 kids, so that will double that and we would only have to turn away 30," Edgar explains. "And on the CNA program on the health side we have to turn away 100 kids, and so that will really help us move things around and do a better job of offering what's best for kids."&nbsp;

School Board Member Ken Reeder says the community support for the project has been a sort of game changer. &nbsp;

Reeder says Altec, Herzog, Gray Manufacturing, R-S Electrical, and Mosaic will provide equipment. &nbsp;

"And we're going to fill up the inside of the building with their equipment, the equipment that's state of the art, they're going to put it in this building," Reeder says. "And then guess what, once the students get trained on that they get to go to those companies and work on the very equipment they've just been trained on that's state of the art."&nbsp;

The proposal would allow states to remove the 1-psi volatility waiver for gasoline-ethanol blends containing ten percent ethanol in their states. 

EPA proposes removing the 1-psi waiver in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. 

EPA proposes an effective date for all states of April 28, 2024. Biofuel groups, however, criticized the implementation date of the proposal. Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor responded, “First and foremost, we need E15 in 2023 so consumers can save money every time they fuel up at the pump.” 

The National Corn Growers Association supports the governors’ plan and expressed serious concern over the one-year delay in implementation and the market uncertainty the delay creates for E15 in 2023. NCGA President Tom Haag says, “These governors did the right thing, but EPA’s proposal delays this solution.”

Northwest Missouri State University has chosen an official and
academic with Troy University of Alabama to be its next president.

Tory Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Chief
Academic Officer, Lance Tatum, will begin leading Northwest Missouri in June.

The Northwest Missouri Board of Regents has entered a three-year
contract with Tatum.

“Initially it was the mission of Northwest that
attracted me,” Tatum said in a written statement released by NWMSU. “As we
spent the day interacting with various groups, I was reminded of the John
Maxwell quote, ‘People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude.’ The
attitude Jill and I felt was the deep sense of pride in this University. By the
end of our visit, we were convinced Northwest was a place we wanted to be.”

Regents voted unanimously to hire Tatum, who was
among four finalists who visited the Maryville campus in February for a series
of interviews with stakeholder groups and public forums.

Tatum has served in his current role at Troy
University since January 2019 while holding the rank of professor in its
Sorrell College of Business—School of Hospitality, Sport and Tourism
Management.

Tatum joined Troy University as a faculty member
in 1998. Tatum served as vice chancellor for its campus in Montgomery, Alabama;
vice chancellor for its Global Campus; dean of the College of Education; and
chairperson of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion as well as a
Faculty Athletics Representative.

Tatum earned a Ph.D. in sport management at
Florida State University. He has a Master of Science in Education degree in
foundations of education and a Bachelor of Science degree in physical
education, both from Troy University.

Recent revelations that some federal officials
now believe COVID-19 originated in the Wuhan Institute of Virology vindicates
many silenced when they suggested the pandemic began in the lab.

Eastern Kansas Congressman Jake LaTurner says
it’s important to determine the origin of the coronavirus pandemic.

“If you said just a couple of years ago that perhaps
this started in a lab in Wuhan, you were laughed at, you were banned on social
media,” LaTurner tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “We had these big tech companies
deciding what truth and what fiction was and it is wrong.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray told Fox News in an
interview the bureau has concluded the COVID-19 pandemic was “most likely a
potential lab incident.” The Department of Energy recently stated it is
plausible the coronavirus originated from a lab leak.

LaTurner, a Republican, says the country needs to
know the origin of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This has killed millions of people across the
globe,” LaTurner says. “We need to know exactly what China did, exactly how it
happened and we should not rest until we uncover this.”

LaTurner doesn’t expect China to cooperate in the
investigation.

“The one theory was that it started in the wet
markets and they destroyed everything before it could be tested or before there
was any outside (investigation) over the issue,” according to LaTurner. “China
is not going to be a good partner on this or anything else.”

LaTurner says Republicans are determined to get
to the bottom of how COVID-19 began.

“Again, this is something that if you said that
it started at the Wuhan lab not that long ago, you were laughed at, you were
shut down by the big tech companies,” LaTurner says. “And, now all of the sudden,
it’s a real possibility that that’s what happened. We should not rest, the
American people deserve answers on this, and we are going to do everything we
can to deliver those.”

He is being held without bond on requested charges of criminal trespass, criminal damage to property and interference with law enforcement.&nbsp;

He has previous felony convictions for battery and aggravated domestic battery, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Former Kansas City Federal Reserve President Esther George
called on the Fed to act sooner to head off inflation, a call not heeded by the
Federal Reserve.

Then, as a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee
last year, George voted against a three-quarters of a percent raise in interest
rates.

George doesn’t see a contradiction in her action.

“My concern in June was we should strike a steady path and be
very clear that we are raising rates, we are going to bring down that big
balance sheet we have, but not to move in a way that would be so disruptive to
the economy,” George tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post in an interview.

This is the second of our two-part series with George.

George, a native of Faucett, served as Kansas City Fed
president from 2011 until the end of January when Federal Reserve policy forced
her to retire.

There have been some who call George a “contrarian voice.” George
says she voted against the majority at times as a member of the Federal Open
Market Committee, but she sees those not as contrarian votes, but as votes of
conscience.

“I think it does no good to any important decision to have a
consensus that is not challenged,” George explains. “And so, I wouldn’t call
myself a contrarian for the sake of being contrary to an idea, but I do think
it’s critical, and you’re obligated in my view when you serve the public, to
say when you see it differently.”

George says that while she believes the Federal Reserve took
too long to act, it must be cautious not to raise rates too quickly and send
the economy into recession.

George shakes off suggestions the economy has slipped into
recession already, stating the strength of the economy now is the very low
unemployment rate.

“So, I think what we see now in reality is a very tight labor
market with inflationary pressures continuing,” George says. “That does not
look like a recession to me.”

The Federal Reserve’s real strength, according to George, is
its decentralization into 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks, allowing George
during her tenure as KC Fed President to bring to the table concerns from the
Heartland.

“My ability to cover a seven-state region that included St.
Joseph, Missouri allowed me to work on the ground and hear directly from the
public on how the Fed’s policy, how the economy, was affecting them,” according
to George. “And that was a tremendously important perspective to take to Washington
then to make decisions about monetary policy.”

While the Fed controls monetary policy, its role in keeping
the economy healthy is limited, according to George.

“So, I think it’s always a challenge to explain to the public,
yes, the Fed has an important role, but it is not the only game in town and cannot
solve all the economic issues that our country faces.”

George says she plans to take a little time in retirement to
decide her next steps. She says she does plan to attend to some needs at the
family farm near Faucett and take more time for her family.

Extra counselors sent to schools in wake of fatal St. Joseph shooting

At the conclusion of the fourth annual St. Joseph Restaurant Week, officials with the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce call it a success.&nbsp;

Founder of Felix Street Gourmet Terri Modlin says the event bounced back well following the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

"Weather helps, I mean people are willing to get out, but I think also people now know more what it's about," Modlin tells reporters. "They also have some time on their calendars, you know football season has wrapped up, so they can get out and enjoy some other activities so I feel like it's been a healthy and profitable opportunity for many involved."&nbsp;

The event returned back to February, after being held in May last year.&nbsp;

Modlin says the annual event helps in a time where restaurants normally see a lull in activity.&nbsp;

"Sometimes it's weather, sometimes it's a reset on their own personal objectives, but the opportunity to get people out, we're thankful that so many groups came and had meetings here they embraced it and got together with friends to celebrate it," Modlin says. "So yes, it's a big help to bring people in through this January and February timeframe."&nbsp;

The event helped not only to draw customers to local restaurants, but also once again brought back a charity component, raising money for Second Harvest Food Bank.&nbsp;

Modlin says as a business owner, she sees benefits from a strong community.&nbsp;

"If what we can be doing is also giving towards nonprofits that are reaching the needy in our community and just making us stronger, I think that's important," Modlin explains. "We think it might also motivate some people maybe that might not go out or spend that same amount, but knowing that a charity is involved that helps motivate them to maybe try something different and be giving twice."&nbsp;

Restaurant goers during this year’s event raised $1,700 for Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Altec matched that to present a $3,400 check to the food bank&nbsp;

 </figure>By MATT PIKE&nbsp;St. Joseph Post&nbsp;At the conclusion of the fourth annual St. Joseph Restaurant Week, officials with the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce call it a success.&nbsp;Founder of Felix Street Gourmet Terri Modlin says the event bounced back well following the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;"Weather helps, I mean people are willing to get out, but I think also people now know more what it's about," Modlin tells reporters. "They also have some time on their calendars, you know football season has wrapped up, so they can get out and enjoy some other activities so I feel like it's been a healthy and profitable opportunity for many involved."&nbsp;The event returned back to February, after being held in May last year.&nbsp;Modlin says the annual event helps in a time where restaurants normally see a lull in activity.&nbsp;"Sometimes it's weather, sometimes it's a reset on their own personal objectives, but the opportunity to get people out, we're thankful that so many groups came and had meetings here they embraced it and got together with friends to celebrate it," Modlin says. "So yes, it's a big help to bring people in through this January and February timeframe."&nbsp;The event helped not only to draw customers to local restaurants, but also once again brought back a charity component, raising money for Second Harvest Food Bank.&nbsp;Modlin says as a business owner, she sees benefits from a strong community.&nbsp;"If what we can be doing is also giving towards nonprofits that are reaching the needy in our community and just making us stronger, I think that's important," Modlin explains. "We think it might also motivate some people maybe that might not go out or spend that same amount, but knowing that a charity is involved that helps motivate them to maybe try something different and be giving twice."&nbsp;Restaurant goers during this year’s event raised $1,700 for Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Altec matched that to present a $3,400 check to the food bank&nbsp;

Adding low-cost ethanol to the nation's gasoline supply improves energy security and saves the average American household more than $750 annually. 

That's according to a new study by energy economists from the University of California-Berkeley. 

The analysis concluded that "adding ethanol to gasoline decreases the price paid by U.S. drivers at the pump." 

The researchers estimate the average discount per gallon to be $0.77 between 2019 and 2022, reaching a total savings of $95.1 billion annually for U.S. consumers. The authors of the study attribute much of this benefit to the Renewable Fuel Standard. 

Renewable Fuels Association President and CEO Geoff Cooper said the study's results come at a critical time for U.S. policymakers. 

Cooper says, "American consumers would be paying much higher prices at the pump if not for the inclusion of more than 14 billion gallons of low-cost, low-carbon ethanol in our nation's gasoline supply each year," RFA commissioned the new study.
