It felt like a playoff environment in the middle of the regular season, as the Southside and the Northside took over Benton High School, for what could potentially be the final ever matchup between Benton and Lafayette.&nbsp; 

As the St. Joseph School District shifts to a two high school model next school year, Benton and Central will remain the lone high schools, while Lafayette will become a middle school, meaning this classic rivalry of Southside and Northside pride, will be no more come this fall.&nbsp; Even with still a chance these two teams could meet in the actual playoffs, the fans treated this like it was their playoffs with the atmosphere that was created.

The atmosphere surrounding the rivalry is nothing new.&nbsp; In fact, Benton girls head coach Rebecca Bailey whose been a part of this for some time, formerly as an assistant coach but also a parent, says there's nothing like the atmosphere this game creates.&nbsp;

"I wish I had an atmosphere like this when I was playing in high school, this is I feel like super awesome for these kids, Northside and Southside, fans from the north, fans from the south, best fans in the world and fans in St. Joe," Bailey tells reporters.&nbsp; "And so I love the fact that both sides came out and supported these girls tonight and having it loud and having everyone there and cheering you on, I'm super excited for the girls they got to play in that, it's a very awesome atmosphere."

"And if you've never played it in or never experienced it, it's something you can't really put into words unless you're there and you get to experience it yourself and it's just super awesome, I think the community did a great job of coming in and supporting these girls."

Unlike in their matchup back on January 16th in the Kearney Tournament championship, Benton got off to a slow start, and it was Lafayette that took over the first quarter, getting out to an early 16-5 lead on the Cardinals.&nbsp; But in the second quarter, Benton found their footing and made adjustments, finding holes in the defense as senior Eliana Arambula scored 12 of her team leading 25 points in the quarter, to narrow the gap to one point, leaving Benton trailing 26-25 at halftime.&nbsp;

The Cardinals continued to take over the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Irish 12-4 to move their lead to 37-30, before Arambula again took over in the final quarter scoring the remaining 13 points, with Benton also getting buckets from Jenna Cox and Jalynn Brown, on way to a 54-42 victory.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Arambula says the rally in the final three quarters, after the slow start was just taking advantage of the opportunities that Lafayette was giving to them.

"There's holes in every defense and we were able to figure those out, so if it takes a quarter, I mean obviously we don't like it to take a quarter, but if it does focusing on figuring it out in the next three quarters is the biggest thing," Arambula says.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Arambula led with 25 points while Brown scored 11.&nbsp; For Lafayette, Emery Omon led with 16 points and Katana Bigham added nine, while Rozlyn McDevitt chipped in eight.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To no surprise, the atmosphere carried right into the boys game, feeling very similar to last year's Class 4 District 16 championship game when these two teams met on the same court.&nbsp; It's a rivalry and an atmosphere though, that goes even farther back for Benton head coach Jared Boone.

"The rivalry's been a big part of my life, I've played in it, grew up in it, still followed it after my career, and now coaching in it, it's been fun," Boone says.&nbsp; "A lot of stories, a lot of friendships, a lot of memories, just hanging out with some of the guys back in the day during my time, Charlie McDonald, Antoine Wilkinson, Ronnie Grant, and those guys before games and then coming down here and competing with them and then going and hanging out with them again after games, and those are still guys that I still see to this day."&nbsp;

"And Darrell Hughes, his son is a freshman here that's on our freshman team, and so it's just kind of cool to have those full circle moments and now seeing the kids go through the rivalry now and what has become the past few years, it's just fun to be a part of and fun to see, and we look forward to it."'

In many ways like the girls, the Benton boys got off to a slow start against Lafayette, in a very fast moving first quarter, the Cardinals holding a narrow 14-11 lead at the end of one.&nbsp; In the second quarter though, again like the girls, Benton made their adjustments, and went on a 12-0 run before the Irish could score, pulling away at the halftime break 26-17.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Boone says what went into putting that run together after the slow start, was a better understanding of what Lafayette was doing to them.&nbsp;

"What they were trying to take advantage of with flipping our defense and things like that, and then just us kind of understanding we're not doing things to the principles we talk about and just kind of getting back to basics and focusing on that," Boone explains.

The second half, fueled by that run and stealing momentum, remained all Cardinals, as Benton in a low scoring third quarter outscored Lafayette 13-7, to extend their lead, and only continued adding to it in the fourth and final frame, eventually prevailing over the Irish 57-34.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Senior Lincoln Goodwin has been a part of this rivalry for all four years of his high school career, experiencing both highs and lows, and says it's sad to know this could potentially be the end of the matchup.&nbsp;

"Even if they're our rival, we care about everybody, but I mean it was great the city really showed out tonight and it was awesome, it was a great environment," Goodwin says.&nbsp;

Goodwin led with 29 points while Mach Mayom and Jason Simmons each added seven points.&nbsp; For Lafayette, Jodell Redman led with 14 points and Donavyn Fonseca added 12 points.&nbsp; Maxton Pucket chipped in six points.

The Benton boys and girls will travel to Maryville on Friday.&nbsp; The Lafayette boys and girls will be at Bishop LeBlond on Thursday.

Benton sweeps Lafayette in potential final matchup of rivalry

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for an alleged assault.

Just after 8:30p.m. February 7, police&nbsp;responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 1400 block Santa Fe Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. An investigation determined that a disturbance had occurred around 10p.m. on Thursday night involving three people who reside together at the residence. 

During the disturbance 63-year-old Nena Dempsey had threatened the other two residents with a handgun and subsequently locked the two, a 56-year-old man and 66-year-old woman, in a bedroom where they remained throughout the night. Dempsey is also charged with striking the 66-year-old woman in the face multiple times on Friday morning.

Police arrested Dempsey on requested charges of aggravated assault, criminal restraint, and battery and booked her into the county jail. She remains in custody on a $50,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Kan. woman accused of violent attack on roommates

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, in partnership with the American Legion, is officially accepting applications for the 54th Cadet Patrol Academy. 

The joint program is seeking motivated young men and women, ages 16 to 18, to participate in the upcoming 2026 class.

The week-long academy is scheduled to begin on June 7. This immersive experience is designed to provide students with hands-on insight into the world of law enforcement. Throughout the week, cadets will mirror the daily routines and rigorous training of actual Patrol recruits, allowing them to explore various career paths within the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The program will conclude with a formal graduation ceremony on Friday, June 12.

To be considered for the academy, interested students must meet the following criteria:

The Route E bridge over West Honey Creek, located southeast of Princeton, is scheduled to close for a total replacement beginning Monday, Feb. 23.

Part of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s (MoDOT) Northwest Bridge Bundle project, the bridge is expected to remain closed through July 2026. Local motorists are advised to plan alternate routes for the duration of the construction.

The existing West Honey Creek Bridge was constructed in 1932 and currently serves roughly 294 vehicles daily. Its replacement is one of 31 aging structures across north central Missouri identified for replacement or rehabilitation under the "poor-condition" designation.

“The Northwest Bridge Bundle is a Design-Build project which will replace or rehabilitate 31 poor-condition bridges,” said MoDOT Project Manager Michael Marriott.

In December 2023, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the contract to the Capital – Horner &amp; Shifrin team. Unlike traditional methods, the Design-Build delivery system uses a single contracting team to handle both the design and construction phases.

MoDOT to close Route E Bridge in Mercer County for replacement

At the beginning of next month, the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art will put on a special exhibit, highlighting several high school artists from around the region.  

The annual Regional High School Exhibition will celebrate the creativity and artistic talents of many high schoolers from throughout the northwest Missouri region.  

Director of Education Alex Asher says this exhibit is different from anything the museum normally puts on 

"Because it showcases our young artists in the community who are just starting and exploring their artwork,” Asher says on the KFEQmunnity show.  “And it's so different from anything else because they are not afraid, they will make artwork based on whatever they are feeling at the time, and it’s pretty amazing.” 

Asher says the opening for this exhibit is always one of the most well attended 

“Because all of those students, their families and teachers come and it’s set up a lot like the membership exhibition where they have awards that they’ll win,” Asher explains.  “And so, at 2pm they’ll have that awards ceremony, it’s very exciting to see these young artists, so excited to be in the exhibition, but also to win something in their category and feel the recognition that they should receive.” 

Asher says having their work on display for people to see can give young artists inspiration to continue growing in the arts 

“But also, to have not an arts career, but just to be involved in the arts in their community for the rest of their lives,” Asher says.  “That’s what's so important about the art museum, is that we might not have the majority of artists as members, but it’s people who want to support the arts, who want to be involved, who want to be a part of this community, because it really is vibrant and it's so positive.” 

The exhibit opening is on March 1st from 1 to 4pm and runs until April 12th.  It will run alongside another new exhibit titled A Scattering of Jades, featuring works from Cesar Lopez &amp; Kiki Serna. 

Albrecht Kemper puts works of area high schoolers on display next month

A Tarkio man, 36-year old Dustin Scott Watson, has been arrested on charges including statutory rape and child molestation in Atchison County. 

The arrest follows an investigation by the Atchison County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from other law enforcement agencies. 

Watson faces multiple felony charges related to possession of child pornography and sexual exploitation of a minor. He is currently held at the Atchison County Jail without bond, and the investigation is ongoing.

He has a previous conviction for sex crimes involving a minors in 2010, according to the sex offender registry.

 This national day of outdoor exploration, held annually on the third Saturday of May, is designed to connect kids and families with their local, state, and national parks. Whether you are a seasoned pro or have never held a rod, everyone is invited to join in for a day of fun and fishing.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says all fishing gear will be provided. Everyone is encouraged to share their best tips, tricks, and legendary "monster fish" stories throughout the day. The event takes place from 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.&nbsp;Pre-registration is encouraged, however walk-in registrations will also be available on-site.

No prior experience is required—just a willingness to get your line wet. MDC teams will have you casting with confidence in no time, and by the end of the session, you’ll be ready to head out on your own to catch your very first fish.

To ensure a comfortable experience, please wear clothing and closed-toed shoes suitable for outdoor and water activities. The MDC also recommends bringing sunglasses, a water bottle, and sunscreen. Please note that for safety reasons, all children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

While fishing permits are not required during this specific event, participants 16 and older are encouraged to purchase one so they can continue their angling journey afterward.

Celebrate 'National Kids to Parks Day' at Corby Pond in May

Following a strategic pivot to local governance, the Platte County Commission has announced the formation of the Platte County Mental Health Board Advisory Committee. The group is tasked with building the framework for a new, independent board dedicated exclusively to the county’s residents.

The move comes after the Commission’s decision to withdraw from the tri-county Clay-Platte-Ray Mental Health Board. By moving to a localized model, the county intends to redirect over $3 million in annual property tax revenue toward initiatives that prioritize local control, transparency, and tailored services.

The newly formed advisory body serves as the architect for the future Mental Health Board. Its primary responsibilities include designing a fair and open application process for prospective board members, recommending specific qualifications and selection criteria, and providing a final framework to the Platte County Commission for approval.

Presiding Commissioner Scott Fricker emphasized that this transition is about creating a system that is more responsive to the specific needs of the local population.

“The creation of this Advisory Board marks an important milestone in our commitment to building a mental health system that truly serves Platte County,” Fricker said. “By having stakeholder input on what we should be looking for in Board members, we are positioning Platte County to deliver more effective, accountable, and tailored mental health services for our residents.”

The Advisory Board includes representatives from various sectors, including health professionals, county leaders, and stakeholders with relevant expertise.

The Advisory Committee will begin its work immediately to establish the structure of the permanent board. ATCHISON COUNTY— A Missouri teen and a Kansas driver avoided injury after an accident that occurred just after 4p.m. Monday in Atchison.

According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, a 2023 Ford Explorer driven by Ronald Dorssom, 83, Atchison, was northbound on 6th Street at U.S. 59. The driver stopped at the stop sign. A 2019 Kenworth semi driven by Kyler Noland, 17, Oregon Missouri who had been westbound on U.S.59 and was turning south onto 6th Street struck the SUV.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mosaic Life Care has officially named Suzanne Goddard, care manager for Serious Illness Management at St. Joseph Medical Center, as the recipient of the 2025 Servant’s Heart Award. 

As part of the recognition, the health system donated $500 to the St. Joseph Friends of the Animal Shelter, a charity personally selected by Goddard.

The Servant’s Heart Award is the highest honor for caregivers at Mosaic Life Care, recognizing those who display "extraordinary compassion and a strong commitment to serving others." Goddard was nominated by her colleagues following a remarkable act of kindness for a patient facing end-of-life challenges. When the patient had to move into a facility that did not allow pets, Goddard adopted the patient’s dog herself and brought the animal back for regular visits.

“This award is about caregivers who go above and beyond for their patients,” said Mike Poore, FACHE, CEO of Mosaic Life Care. “Suzanne’s actions show the true meaning of a servant’s heart. She didn’t just care for a patient – she cared for what mattered most to that patient. It’s incredibly humbling to work alongside caregivers like Suzanne who serve with such compassion.”

Goddard, who expressed deep honor at the recognition, emphasized that her primary motivation was the well-being of the person under her care.

“You don’t go into nursing or caregiving for recognition,” Goddard said. “But when you can do something small that makes such a big difference for someone, it’s always worth it. Helping her know her dog was safe lifted a huge weight off her shoulders. It brought her peace.”

Goddard’s decision to direct the donation to St. Joseph Friends of the Animal Shelter was driven by her desire to help those who cannot speak for themselves. “Animals don’t have a voice,” she explained. “The shelter does so much for the community and for animals in need. It just felt like the right place.”

Jenn Kline, president of the board of directors for Friends of the Animal Shelter, noted that the donation arrives at a critical time as animal welfare organizations face overcrowding and financial strain.

“Hearing her story truly brought tears to my eyes,” Kline said. “Caring for people during such vulnerable moments and giving them peace of mind is an incredible gift. That kindness means more than words can say.”

The $500 contribution will be used to fund medical care for sick and injured animals, support adoption programs, and maintain community services such as spay and neuter programs.

March corn closed unchanged and May corn was up a 1/4 cent. March soybeans closed up 11 3/4 cents and May soybeans were up 12 1/2 cents. March KC wheat closed up 1 3/4 cents, March Chicago wheat was down a 1/2 cent, March Minneapolis wheat was down 2 1/4 cents.

Soybean futures led the way higher on Tuesday, resuming rallying efforts after a brief pause on Monday. Meanwhile, corn and wheat markets were mixed as USDA made very few changes to U.S. and global balance sheets but did reiterate multi-year highs in grain reserves. Outside markets were mixed for Tuesday with softer energy markets, while the U.S. dollar recovered from the turn lower on Monday.

In trying to wait patiently for the week's fundamentals to shine through the marketplace, the live cattle complex was mixed for the bulk of the session before finishing lower, as traders simply aren't willing to advance the market at this point without first seeing fundamental reassurance develop. It's quite likely the market could enter a sideways trading range until it sees what the fed cash cattle market is going to accomplish this week. Traders don't want to pressure the market's resistance from a technical standpoint, but at the same time they believe in the market's long-term, bullish fundamental outlook, which is why a sideways trend is most likely to be the theme throughout the remainder of the week and until cash cattle begin to trade. Tuesday's WASDE report shared a fruitful outlook for the cattle and beef markets of 2026. Beef production for 2026 was increased by 185 million pounds as fed cattle slaughter is expected to increase, cow slaughter is expected to increase, and carcass weights are obviously higher. Boxed beef prices are mixed: choice up $2.24 ($370.00) and select down $0.82 ($364.53) with a movement of 74 loads (53.35 loads of choice, 4.31 loads of select, 4.17 loads of trim and 11.88 loads of ground beef).

Without a strong presence seen in the live cattle complex, the feeder cattle contracts were also trading mixed into Tuesday's noon hour, before fading and finishing lower. But what remains interesting about the feeder cattle market's behavior is the deferred contracts aren't concerned about what the live cattle contracts are doing and instead traded fully higher, seeming more focused on the market's long-term situation of short supplies for the bulk of today's session.

The lean hog complex was again trading lower as the market seems to be anticipating increased supplies that are soon to hit the market. The last quarterly Hogs and Pigs report unveiled more market-ready supplies than what the industry anticipated, and there were plenty of hogs noted in the heavy weight categories which will meet the consumer in the supply chain at any point in time now. But what also remains true is that while the futures complex may be scaling lower, pork demand over the last two weeks has been noticeably stronger, which one may logically assume is because some consumers are electing to purchase pork as opposed to beef as it's a cheaper protein option.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced a new federal registration for low-volatility Dicamba herbicides in 34 states. This registration will enable U.S. farmers to have access to this important weed control tool in Dicamba-tolerant soybeans and cotton. Bayer is launching the new registration as Stryax Dicamba herbicide, a restricted-use pesticide. “With a federal registration in hand, we’ll begin the process of seeking state approvals,” said Dr. Ty Witten, Bayer’s vice president of commercial stewardship. ”In the weeks ahead, we’ll launch applicator training opportunities and stewardship education to help ensure that growers and applicators have the best experience possible.” 

The registration will enable the use of approved low-volatility Dicamba herbicides in-crop up to seven days pre-harvest in XtendFlex cotton, and up through R1 in XtendFlex soybeans. Bayer said Stryax is intended to help manage glyphosate-resistant broadleaf weeds, as well as other tough-to-control weeds. 

EPA announces new low-volatility Dicamba herbicides

The U.S. will temporarily expand the amount of beef it can import from Argentina, thanks to an executive order signed by President Trump last week. Reports said the move is intended to help lower the price of beef, but the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association said that isn’t accurate. The proclamation increases the in-quota tariff-rate quota for lean beef trimmings by 80,000 metric tons for the calendar year 2026. 

The additional imports will be entirely allocated to imports from Argentina and released into the U.S. market in segments four times through the year, beginning this week on February 13. “The White House said the action is intended to boost supply and make ground beef more affordable for American consumers,” the reports continued. “The proclamation from the White House said the administration is acting in response to historically high beef prices and a prolonged decrease in the U.S. cattle herd.”

U.S. to quadruple beef imports from Argentina

March corn closed down 1 1/2 cents per bushel at $4.28 3/4 and May Corn closed down 1 3/4 cents per bushel at $4.37 and March soybeans closed down 4 1/2 cents at $11.10 3/4 and May soybeans were down 3 3/4 cents at $11.25. March KC wheat closed down 2 1/2 cents at $5.28 3/4, March Chicago wheat was down 1 cent at $5.28 3/4 and MIAX March Minneapolis wheat was up 0.01 cents at $5.7050.

Grain and soybean markets fell Monday, led by soybeans and soymeal as the Argentine rain outlook has brightened and soy premiums in South America fell, making the U.S. less competitive. Soybean oil bucked the bearish trend and rallied along with crude oil.

The livestock complex headed into Monday's noon hour with a mixed tone, as traders desired to push the contracts higher, but needed to see more fundamental support before they would confidently do so. New showlists are higher in Texas, Kansas and mostly steady in Nebraska/Colorado.

The live cattle complex was taking a mixed approach to Monday's noon hour as the market continued to desire to trade higher -- but traders need to see continued fundamental support and reassurance before they'll likely push the market up to or beyond resistance thresholds.

Upon establishing what seems to be a new top last week in the lean hog complex, the market continued to trade lower today as traders question if there's enough support to challenge that new threshold.&nbsp;

Modern Ag Alliance issued a report on the state of the American farmer, showing that agriculture is facing one of its most challenging periods in a generation. The report said economic pressures and activist campaigns against modern agriculture have created conditions where even the most resilient operations are feeling the strain. 

These pressures extend well beyond the farm gate, giving price instability across the economy for the food, fuel, and fiber that depend on agricultural production. The report shows farmers face profitability challenges, with only about half the farmers expected to be profitable in the past year. Commodity prices have dropped as high as 58 percent since 2022, and cost increases like labor and tariff-related expenses continue climbing. Farm bankruptcies have seen a 60 percent year-over-year increase, surpassing the 2024 total by mid-2025. 

They also said regulatory uncertainty and disconnected policymakers are making a difficult situation even harder.

Modern Ag Alliance Issues a Report on the Modern Farmer

Boehringer Ingelheim announced that the Food and Drug Administration has issued an Emergency Use Authorization for using IVOMEC (Ivermectin) 1% Injection for preventing infestations of New World Screwworm in cattle. 

Under the Authorization, Ivermectin 1% is usable for the prevention of infestations caused by NWS larvae when administered within 24 hours of birth, at the time of castration, or at the appearance of a wound in cattle. It’s not usable in female dairy cattle producing milk for human consumption and calves that will be processed for veal. 

Based on the available scientific evidence, the FDA determined that there is no adequate, approved, and available alternative to the product for preventing NWS in certain cattle at these critical intervention points. “Protecting the health and well-being of livestock is at the core of our mission,” said Steve Boren, the vice president of U.S. livestock for Boehringer Ingelheim.

BIVI Secures Emergency Authorization for NWS Medication

The USDA’s Economic Research Service forecasts that net farm income, a broad measure of profitability in the agricultural economy, is forecast to drop by 0.7 percent to $153.4 billion in 2026 compared to last year. When adjusted for inflation, net farm income is projected to decrease by $4.1 billion or 2.6 percent. Reuters said that the drop comes despite near-record government payments, which will make up almost 29 percent of producers’ bottom line. 

“Agency data said without those government payments, net farm income would drop almost 12 percent to $109.1 billion,” Reuters said. “Government payments are doing a lot of the work to support crop producers.” 

The USDA forecast said producers will receive $30.5 billion in direct support in 2025 and $44.3 billion in 2026, excluding additional payouts from federal crop insurance indemnities. “We haven’t seen these levels since 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 upheaval and trade disruptions during President Donald Trump’s first term,” Reuters added.

Soybeans continued their recent bullish burst for much of Friday morning, before sellers became very active and ultimately erased roughly 25 cents of value, sending prices well off daily highs. Traders were clearly uncomfortable carrying recent length into the weekend and saw reason to book some profits. Moreso, traders may be starting to lose patience and wish to see some export sales to follow up President Trump's very bullish Wednesday trade comments, with the daily flash sales page from USDA quiet both Thursday and Friday to close the week. Meanwhile, selling drove corn and wheat futures lower, negatively influencing soybeans as well. Traders are preparing for next week's WASDE report which will very likely reiterate January's findings of multi-year highs in U.S. grain reserves.&nbsp;

What a breath-holding last couple of days it's been for the cattle complex! Thursday, the market experienced a sharp sell-off as traders were nervous about the union strike at the JBS packing plant in Greely, Colorado, which consequently sent the live cattle complex tumbling mostly $5.00 lower. But the fast-paced environment of the marketplace seems to have moved past that headline and traders were again fixated on the market's strong fundamental strength as they were pleased to note the uptick in boxed beef prices and even more pleased to see fed cash cattle prices trading higher.&nbsp;

The feeder cattle complex was enjoying a healthy rally as well as the market is currently trading $6.00 to $7.00 higher into Friday's noon hour. Support came from the uptick in fed cash cattle prices to the additional fundamental support of stronger boxed beef prices and, of course, the technical confidence of saw the live cattle contracts scaling higher as well.

The lean hog contracts were enjoying a mild rally into Friday's noon hour as the market was merely chopping sideways into the noon hour. If the market weren't up against immediate resistance thresholds, then there was a chance that it would potentially still be trading robustly higher. But with technical fatigue setting in and midday pork cutout values down softly, traders have deemed the safest bet ahead of the weekend is a mild rally as opposed to an aggressive one.&nbsp;

A bipartisan group of former leaders of America’s major agricultural commodity organizations and biofuels organizations, farmer leaders, and former USDA officials issued a stark warning to Congress and the Trump administration. 

In a&nbsp;<a href="https://eu-assets.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltdd43779342bd9107/blt439cb71bf2dc05d5/69834b24c397d881044bb0ed/Farm_Leader_Letter_to_House_and_Senate_Ag_020326_with_Media_Advisory.pdf">letter</a>, they outlined the deteriorating state of the farm economy, calling current conditions a potential “widespread collapse of American agriculture.” &nbsp;The letter was signed by Harold Wolle (WOOL-lee), former NCGA President, Bob Dineen, the past president of the Renewable Fuels Association, Jim Mulhern, the former President of the National Milk Producers Federation, and many others.

The letter proposes many solutions, including immediately exempting all farm inputs from tariffs and repealing tariffs that are disrupting agricultural export markets. Other solutions include passing year-round E15 legislation, a new farm bill, and encouraging the administration to quickly complete a review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement. They’re also asking for Trade Promotion Authority for the administration and new farm labor reform.

Former Ag Leaders Warn of Farm Economy in Crisis

The CattleFax Outlook Seminar, held as a part of CattleCon 2026 in Nashville, Tennessee, said there are signals showing changes ahead in 2026. The U.S. cattle and beef industry enters 2026 with strong but volatile market conditions, as historically tight cattle supplies, record-setting beef demand, and elevated policy and weather uncertainty continue to support prices, even as markets appear to be near cyclical highs. 

“Tight inventories and exceptional demand remain the dominant forces shaping the market,” said Mike Murphy, CattleFax Chief Operating Officer. “However, producer demographics, high input costs, and policy uncertainty point to a slow and measured expansion phase.” 

The Outlook Seminar’s weather forecast is calling for a transition out of La Niña. In the near-term, drought risks remain elevated across the Southern U.S. and Central Plains, with a 70 percent chance of intensification. A neutral spring setup may help distribute moisture more evenly, though lingering La Niña effects could limit precipitation in the West.&nbsp;

Will the Cattle Cycle Turn in 2026?

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas man was sentenced to 34 years in prison last week after being convicted of multiple child exploitation charges.

Judge Kevin Smith handed down the 408-month sentence to Steven K. Davis following a jury trial. On Oct. 8, 2025, a Sedgwick County jury found Davis guilty on six counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

During the trial, Davis’ parole officer testified that he discovered numerous images on Davis’ phone following an arrest for a parole violation. Davis had been taken into custody for contacting minors, a violation of his post-release conditions.

At the time of the new offenses, Davis was on post-release supervision for two prior convictions of aggravated indecent liberties with a child in 2022, according to the district attorney's office. Smith imposed the sentence after determining Davis is a persistent sex offender under Kansas law.

Davis will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

The case was investigated by the Wichita Police Department’s Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit, led by Detectives Jonathan Elledge and Hans Asmussen.

JOHNSON COUNTY —A man who admitted his role in the drug deal death of a Kansas woman on February 14, 2023 is going to prison.

Last week, Johnson County Judge Jason Billam sentenced 21-year-old Treger Melique Samuels to 84-months in prison, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.&nbsp;

Samuels pleaded guilty to charges of distributing drugs causing the death of 20-year-old Ericka Grisby of Olathe.&nbsp; In June of 2025, police booked Samuels into the Johnson County Jail, according to online records.

KANSAS CITY —One person was injured in a fire at a home in Kansas City, Missouri.

Just before 9p.m. Monday, Kansas City Fire Department&nbsp;companies were dispatched to a reported fire in the 3900 block of Wabash in Kansas City, according to Battalion Chief Riley Nolan.

First crew on scene reported heavy smoke and fire showing from a 2-story house and initiated a defensive fire attack using their deck to gain control of the main body of fire.

&nbsp;Once this was accomplished, they transitioned to an offensive fire attack with companies entering the structure with multiple hose lines. The fire was brought under control at 9:32 p.m.

Red Cross was contacted to assist with 2 adults and a dog.&nbsp;One occupant of the house was transported to a local hospital by ambulance for smoke inhalation..&nbsp;A second patient, who was not involved in the incident, approached on scene personnel for medical assistance and was also transported by ambulance to a local hospital, according to Riley.&nbsp;The cause of the fire is under investigation by KCFD.

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas man on drug allegations.

Just after 8p.m. Feb. 7, a Sheriffs Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Ford pickup truck on U.S. Highway 75 near 126th Road for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.&nbsp; Deputies arrested the passenger, 61-year-old Daniel Lorann Hysten, of Topeka on a requested charge of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

The driver, Frank Newton, of Topeka, was arrested on an outstanding City of Topeka warrant.

DOUGLAS COUNTY – Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical (LDCFM) investigators and Lawrence Police Department (LKPD) detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with multiple aggravated arsons and burglaries that occurred between December 2025 and February 2026, according to a statement from Lawrence Police.

The suspect was taken into custody on February 7, following a joint investigation by investigators and police detectives. The investigators have identified the crimes took place at three separate apartment complexes involving four vacant dwelling units and two laundry rooms. Damage estimates are not available at this time.&nbsp; Police did not release the name of the suspect.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://house.mo.gov/Bill.aspx?bill=HB1757&amp;year=2026&amp;code=R" target="_blank">bill</a>&nbsp;requiring public schools screen all students to determine if they qualify for gifted education by the time they reach the third grade passed the Missouri House on a 142-8 vote Monday.

It bolsters a state law requiring schools to provide gifted classes when at least 3% of its students are identified as gifted.

“When the legislation passed, we did not include how screening should take place and be completed,” said the bill’s sponsor, state Rep. Brenda Shields in a House debate last week.

Shields, a Republican from St. Joseph, said some schools are not reaching the 3% threshold because they are not screening students. She estimates that 20,000 students that should qualify are not offered a gifted class.

Of the state’s 554 school districts, 227 offer gifted education, the education department reported in the&nbsp;<a href="https://documents.house.mo.gov/billtracking/bills261/fiscal/fispdf/5274H.02P.ORG.pdf" target="_blank">bill’s fiscal note</a>. Most of the districts that offer gifted services surround high population areas.

“These students have burdens. They are very young and different from their peers,” she said. “These are the students that want to dive deeper in a classroom activity, far beyond what the teacher or the rest of the class wants to do.”

The bill leaves flexibility for schools to assess students, directing them to look to a “body of evidence” showing a student’s intelligence, creativity or other gifted attributes. Three staff members trained in gifted education would review the information.

Lawmakers showed broad approval for the bill in initial discussions, with some concern surfacing about funding the screening process.

When the state’s formula for funding public schools was passed in 2005, gifted education funding changed from being a separate line item to part of the formula’s base calculation. As a result, the amount of state aid for gifted education is disconnected from the amount of students identified as gifted.

A committee is currently drafting changes to the public school funding formula and is considering adding additional funding per student identified as gifted. But changes are unlikely to take effect until fall 2028, so districts could have a minimum of two years with a new requirement and a formula that keeps gifted education funding largely flat.

The Lindbergh School District, in the bill’s fiscal note, estimated the cost of screening at $6.50 per student.

The bill is the fourth proposal approved by the House and in the hands of the Senate.

Bill to require gifted education screening in public schools passes Missouri House

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —After a two-day search, law enforcement captured a stolen vehicle suspect.

Just before 10 p.m. Sunday, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a caller who observed a pickup truck that had been reported stolen out of St. Mary’s, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The caller observed the vehicle in western Jackson County.&nbsp; Jackson County Deputies located the vehicle near N. Road on 158th&nbsp;Road.&nbsp; A pursuit ensued eastbound.&nbsp; The vehicle turned into a driveway of a residence located at 15505 158th&nbsp;Road and crashed through a fence.&nbsp; The vehicle caught fire, deputies and fire crews extinguished the fire as the driver escaped into a thickly wooded area. Deputies and troopers searched the area with K-9s and drones and were not able to locate the suspect.

Just after 10 a.m. Monday, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen who reported finding a man wearing a brown Carhartt Jacket with blue jeans in his chicken house. Sheriff’s Office personnel quickly came on scene.&nbsp; Deputies, State Troopers and K.B.I. agents assisted with the search including K-9s, drones and aircraft.&nbsp; As of 2 p.m. today, the subject has not been located.

The Sheriff’s Office identified William Joseph Goetz, 43, of Saint George. Goetz as the suspect and reported he believed that Goetz was without a phone and would access buildings or vehicles to stay warm at night.&nbsp; Deputies continued to canvass the area.

Late Monday afternoon, the suspect allegedly stole a 2005 Ford F-250 pickup truck from a residence on U. Road.&nbsp; The suspect headed south on U. Road and only after 1/8th of a mile rolled the truck and fled again on foot.&nbsp; Law enforcement continued pursuing the suspect southeast to a lake located east of U. Road on 150th.&nbsp; Law enforcement finally apprehended Goetz who was hiding in another pickup truck.&nbsp; Goetz will be booked into the Jackson County Jail for numerous requested charges.

Kansas stolen vehicle suspect captured after 2-day search

After an explosive performance that made him the first running back to earn Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis in Super Bowl&nbsp;XXXII, Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III is set to potentially become a free agent.&nbsp;

Walker finished with 161 yards from scrimmage in Super Bowl LX, and in the playoffs overall&nbsp;Walker racked up 417 yards from scrimmage across three games. His 139 scrimmage yards per game were the second-most by a Super Bowl-winning running back this century, trailing only Saquon Barkley's 143.5 mark from last season.

Now with his impending free agency, several teams could be interested in pursuing the MVP, if he does not return to Seattle alongside a healthy&nbsp; Zach Charbonnet, one of those teams could be the Kansas City Chiefs, who are in desperate need of running back help after an abysmal season running the ball, and with Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt both also set to become free agents in the offseason.&nbsp;

The Chiefs are looking to bolster their backfield and could target Walker to add explosiveness to their rushing attack. However, signing Walker would require the Chiefs to clear significant cap space, which could be a challenge. Despite the competition for his services, the Chiefs could benefit from adding Walker to their roster following his standout performance in the Super Bowl, and Kansas City is considered by many to be the top landing spot for the Super Bowl LX MVP.

Spring Training is nearly here for the Kansas City Royals as pitchers and catchers reported to Surprise, Arizona today, with the first workout tomorrow, and the first full squad workout coming next Monday.

The Royals will have a crowded outfield in camp this spring, with Isaac Collins expected to play left field and Kyle Isbel in center.&nbsp; Lane Thomas will also be on the team, rotating positions based on the day and Jac Caglianone is competing for the right field job, with other contenders including Kameron Misner, Drew Waters, Dairon Blanco, as well as John Rave. 

Meanwhile, the Kansas City infield seems solid with a lineup that will feature core hitters like Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino, Salvador Perez, and Maikel Garcia, with the rest of the lineup including players like Jonathan India, Carter Jensen, and various outfielders.&nbsp; Another question will come though with the Royals starting rotation and bullpen.

Kansas City seems pretty set with the top three guys in their rotation, still monitoring the health of Cole Ragans as he returns from numerous injuries last season, but still having Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha in place as well.&nbsp; The questions come near the bottom part of the rotation.&nbsp; The Royals will also monitor the health of Kris Bubic, who had a breakout year in 2025, and looks to keep his spot, though Kansas City could use him as trade bait.&nbsp; The Royals also have St. Joseph's Noah Cameron, who erupted onto the scene and is competing for a spot again in the rotation.&nbsp;

As set as those five might look, Kansas City does still have the likes of Ryan Bergert, Stephen Kolek,&nbsp;Bailey Falter and Luinder Avila who will compete for spots in the rotation or bullpen during Spring Training.&nbsp; For the bullpen, the Royals could see some good competition from several non roster invitees, including&nbsp;Jose Cuas, Hector Neris and Helcris Olivárez.

Additionally, the popular Dollar Dog Night promotion at Kauffman Stadium will only be available for the first Tuesday home game of each month in 2026, down from multiple nights per month in 2025.

Royals prepare for Spring Training as pitchers and catchers report to Surprise

Best known for his speed on the bases, former Kansas City Royal Terrance Gore, a three time World Series champion, has died at 34 years old.

Gore’s Major League career was unique. He had just 85 regular-season plate appearances through 112 games. His first hit didn’t come until 2018, his fifth season in the league, spanning just 12 at-bats. But by that point, Gore had already racked up 23 stolen bases in the regular season and four more in the playoffs.

The Royals drafted the Gore in the 20th round of the 2011 Draft. He debuted with Kansas City in 2014 and received just two plate appearances in 11 games that season. But he went 5-for-5 in steals and then nabbed three more bases during the postseason as the franchise advanced to its first World Series since 1985.

The following year, Gore stole a base during ALDS Game 4 in a win over the Astros en route to the Royals’ first championship in 30 years. He also had a steal during the 2018 National League Wild Card Game with the Cubs and then stole a career-best 13 bases in 2019 during his second stint with Kansas City.
