KANSAS CITY -- The Royals and Alex Gordon have completed a one-year deal that will bring him back for the 2020 season.

The deal will be for $4 million with performance bonus incentives, according to a source. Sources also indicated that Gordon has waived his 10-and-5 no-trade rights, but would get a $500,000 assignment bonus if traded.

It is likely that Gordon will be present for a news conference at Friday’s Royals FanFest celebration.

Gordon, 35, hit .266 in 2019 with 13 home runs and 76 RBIs, his highest RBI total since 2013.

Gordon also won his seventh Gold Glove Award in 2019. He has made three All-Star Games, and in 2014 he won the American League Platinum Glove Award as the best defensive outfielder. He will return to patrol left field, while Whit Merrifield will take over in center field and Hunter Dozier will play right field following the signing of free-agent third baseman Maikel Franco.

Gordon played in 150 games and had 633 plate appearances, his highest totals since 2014, last year. The Royals, though, seem likely go a bit easier on his playing time in order to give opportunities to Bubba Starling and Brett Phillips, both of whom are out of options.

Gordon told MLB.com last May that he was “60-40” on returning to the Royals for 2020. After winning the Gold Glove Award in November, he told reporters in a conference call that after listening to new manager Mike Matheny’s introductory news conference, he was itching to return in 2020.

Gordon signed a four-year, $72 million contract in January o2016, the richest contract awarded any Royal. Gordon had a $4 million buyout on his mutual option for 2020, though $500,000 was paid on that during the season, making the final figure $3.5 million.

Then, adding to the bizarre finish, both teams were summoned back from the locker rooms by officials and one-tenth of a second was put on the clock. Kansas State shot technical free throws to booing from a few thousand fans left -- necessitating a change to the final score.

"Well, obviously it's an embarrassment," Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. "It's not something to be proud of. What happened showed zero signs of toughness. It's a sign of immaturity and selfishness more so than toughness."

Christian Braun scored a career-high 20 points, Devon Dotson added 18 and Udoka Azubuike finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds for Kansas, which beat the Wildcats for the 14th straight time at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks, who lost to Baylor 10 days ago, also avoided back-to-back home defeats for the first time since 1988-89.

Xavier Sneed had 16 points and David Sloan had 14 for the Wildcats (8-10, 1-5, who continue to struggle on the road. They have lost all three league contests away from Bramlage Coliseum after going 7-2 in those games a year ago, when they tied Texas Tech for the Big 12 title -- ending the Jayhawks' record-setting run of 14 consecutive championships.

Northwest's Hudgins earns weekly MIAA men's basketball honor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Patrick Mahomes tip-toed down the sideline for a game-turning touchdown, added three TD passes, and the Kansas City Chiefs made their first Super Bowl in a half-century by beating the Tennessee Titans 35-24 Sunday for the AFC championship.

In two weeks in Miami, they will play the winner of the NFC title game between Green Bay and San Francisco.

Mahomes did his usual superb job passing, but it was his 27-yard tap dance down the left sideline late in the first half that gave the Chiefs their first lead. From there, they outran the run-oriented Titans and star back Derrick Henry.

At last, for the first time since 1970 and the third time overall, the Chiefs (14-4) are Super Bowl bound.

Adding to the joy of the achievement, coach Andy Reid and owner Clark Hunt accepted the Lamar Hunt Trophy -- named after his father -- emblematic of the AFC title.

As they had done in their past three "elimination" games, the sixth-seeded Titans (11-8) got started quickly. The difference at Arrowhead as opposed to Houston, New England and Baltimore was that the Chiefs had Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Damien Williams on offense, and a vastly upgraded defense from when they lost in last year's AFC title game.

A week after they overcame a 24-0 deficit against Houston, the Chiefs had to rally again.

Down 10-0 and 17-7, Kansas City didn't flinch, building a 35-17 lead while controlling the clock with a strong ground game. Naturally, Mahomes complemented that with sharp passing, spreading the ball on short and deep throws. The dagger came with a 60-yard completion to Watkins for the Chiefs' 28th straight point midway in the final period.

Mahomes thrust both arms in the air as the crowd sang "I Want To Dance With Somebody."

That somebody will be either the 49ers or Packers in two weeks. They were deciding the NFC crown later Sunday in California.

After taking a 3-0 lead on Greg Joseph's first field goal -- with Tennessee's penchant for scoring in the red zone, he hadn't been called upon in his previous four games with the team -- the Titans got a huge break. Bashaud Breeland appeared to make a diving interception, but replay review showed the ball hitting the ground.

Helped by consecutive offside penalties and a a fourth-down pass to Adam Humphries for his first career playoff reception, the Titans converted on, what else, Henry's 4-yard run.

Then the Chiefs got rolling, scoring on three successive series. Hill took it in on a shovel pass, later beat top Titans cornerback Logan Ryan for a 20-yard reception, and Mahomes finished the half with his brilliant jaunt down the left sideline with half the Tennessee defense seemingly expecting him to step out of bounds.

That gave the Chiefs a 21-17 lead. It went to 28-17 on Williams' 3-yard run to cap a seven-minute drive. Then Watkins toasted Logan for the clinching long pass.

Henry was held to 69 yards on 19 carries after rushing for 588 yards in the past three games as an unstoppable force. But the Chiefs easily outrushed the Titans on Sunday.

Mahomes had 53 of those yards and also was 23 for 35 for 294 yards passing.

Last week, Henry threw a jump pass for a touchdown against Baltimore. On Sunday, Dennis Kelly emulated his coach, Mike Vrabel. He sneaked free for Ryan Tannehill's lob, falling back awkwardly but holding on for Tennessee's second TD. The backup tackle is the only offensive lineman since 2000 with two TDs receiving in a season. He also had one against Jacksonville.

Vrabel caught 12 touchdown passes as a linebacker, including one in the Super Bowl when his Patriots beat Reid's Eagles.

Displaying the gambling nature of both coaches, fourth-down conversions were key on early scoring drives. Humphries, who missed the last six games with an ankle problem, caught a 3-yarder on fourth-and-2 at the KC 29. Two plays later, Henry scored.

On the Chiefs' ensuing possession, they went on fourth-and-2 from the Titans 28. Travis Kelce's 4-yard reception continued a march to Hill's first TD.

OXFORD, Miss.  – Mizzou Women's Basketball (5-14, 2-4 SEC) earned its first road win of the season Sunday, as the Tigers defeated Ole Miss (7-11, 0-5 SEC, 71-57, at the Pavilion. Mizzou was led by freshman guard Aijha Blackwell (Berekley, Mo., who recorded her third 20-point game of the season with 20 points, while adding eight rebounds and four assists.

Mizzou utilized big runs in the first and fourth quarter to seize momentum in the game. After Ole Miss scored the game’s first basket, the Tigers went on a 13-0 run to gain control of the game and take a 22-6 lead after the first quarter. However, Ole Miss fought back to tie the game in the third quarter, but Mizzou opened the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run game to recapture a double-digit lead and seal the victory.

Mizzou’s 11-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter was the spark needed to vault the Tigers to victory, as Ole Miss was never able get closer than nine points after the run. Mizzou’s seniors provided all 11 points during the run, as senior guard Jordan Chavis (Lexington, N.C.) scored five points, while senior guard Jordan Roundtree (St. Louis, Mo.) and redshirt senior forward Hannah Schuchts (Tallahassee, Fla.) each scored three.

Missouri women win at Ole Miss 71-57

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Wesern men's basketball team made it interesting, but fell 65-56 at No. 2 Northwest Missouri State on Saturday afternoon. MWSU (7-11, 3-4) played the Bearcats (16-1, 6-1) as close as any MIAA team has, but couldn't close the gap after a Northwest run in the first half.

The Griffons led 9-4 early in the game, but a 9-0 Northwest run gave the Bearcats their first lead of the game. Missouri Western chipped away to go back on top 19-15 with 6:59 left in the first, but Northwest answered with a 16-4 run to take their largest lead of the game. The Griffons never led again. Overall, the game featured three lead changes, all in the first minutes. Northwest never led by more than 13 points.

- Trevor Hudgins was the only Bearcat in double figures, scoring 31 points on 11 of 18 shooting from the field and 6 of 9 shooting from behind the arc. He scored 21 of Northwest's 31 first half points.

- Missouri Western pulled down 11 more rebounds than the Bearcats (37-26).

- Northwest made one more field goal (22) than the Griffons on two fewer attempts and made two more 3-point attempts than the Griffons on the same amount of attempts (20).

Griffons' upset bid comes up short at No. 2 Bearcats 65-56

Four of five starters scored in double figures with Corbyn Cunningham leading the way for MWSU. The junior forward scored 21 points with 10 rebounds and led the team with a career-high six assists.

- MWSU shot 58% in the first half to take a 39-22 lead to the break.

- After Northwest shot 50% from the field in the first quarter, MWSU limited the Bearcats to 18.8% (3-16) shooting in the second quarter.  

- The Griffons needed just five 3-point field goals, scoring 36 points in the paint to Northwest's 16.

- MWSU scored 15 second chance points and didn't allow any for Northwest, holding the Bearcats to just three offensive rebounds.

- On the glass, the Griffons pulled down 48 boards to Northwest's 20.

- Simone Walker started with Chris Wilson out with an injury. Walker scored 10 points and matched a career-high with eight rebounds.

Missouri Western women roll to 71-53 win at Northwest 

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama made 3-pointers early, overcame foul trouble late and took advantage of Missouri's shooting struggles everywhere but the free throw line.

John Petty scored 20 points and Alex Reese and Jaden Shackelford each had 17 to lead the Crimson Tide to an 88-74 victory over Missouri on Saturday. The Tigers made all 31 free throw attempts, the most a Southeastern Conference team has taken without a miss.

"That's a pretty crazy stat," Alabama coach Nate Oats said. "For us to still win by 14 when they set an SEC record for number of free throws made 100 percent, that speaks a lot to what else we were doing well, because we didn't do a very good job keeping them off the free throw line."

The Tide (10-7, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) built a 12-point second-half lead and then withstood challenges to punctuate a week that included handing No. 4 Auburn its first loss. The final margin was the game's biggest.

Missouri (9-8, 1-4) pulled to within three points several times, the last on Reed Nikko's basket with 6:34 left. That was as close as the Tigers could come despite all that success at the line.

The league's previous high for free throw perfection came when Florida made all 27 attempts against Tennessee in 1994.

"I told the guys I'm happy that they did that," Missouri coach Cuonzo Martin said. "I'm very impressed with that, because we spend so much time as a staff on really driving the ball. A lot of stuff we got at the rim. We made the free throws. That's not easy. They did that."

Petty scored nine points down the stretch for the Tide. He and Reese each made four 3-pointers with Petty's biggest a quick one from the top of the key late.

"Coach gives us the green light to shoot 3s in transition if we're open," Petty said. "I really just walked up and I saw (the defender's) feet within the 3-point line and I shot it with confidence."

Herb Jones had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Alabama. Kira Lewis scored 10 points and had seven assists but also turned it over six times.

Dru Smith led Missouri with 18 points and six rebounds. Mark Smith scored 15. Kobe Brown and Xavier Pinson each added 11 points.

The style played mostly in Alabama's favor in a matchup of the nation's No. 4 scoring offense for the Tide and the SEC's top defensive team. The Tigers, who came in allowing 59.7 points per game, gave up a season-high.

They hadn't given up more than 77 in a game.

Petty went scoreless for the first nine minutes and then hit three 3-pointers over the next 2:07 for the Tide. He got hot again late, scoring on a drive, two free throws, a 3-pointer and a jumper.

The Tigers went a span of 10 minutes, 47 seconds in between baskets in the first half. Pinson snapped the drought with a layup he turned into a three-point play after a foul.

Missouri: Missed 10 straight shots in the first half but the Tigers did hit all 21 free throw attempts. Shot 31% (19 of 61) from the field.

Alabama: Finished off a big week after Wednesday's 83-64 romp over No. 4 Auburn. Made 11 3-pointers in the first half before cooling off with two after the half.

FREEBIES Pinson went to the foul line nine times for Missouri and Dru Smith seven. Eight players hit free throws for the Tigers.

Lewis picked up his fourth foul with 9:48 left on his second charge. Fellow guard James Bolden fouled out 42 seconds later, followed not long after by Herbert Jones getting No. 4.

"We went a few minutes there without (Lewis," Oats said. "Kira's not one that typically picks up a lot of fouls. I was hoping he could finish the game without picking that fifth one up. He was smart. He had some maturity about him playing with four fouls."

Dotson returns as No. 6 KU wins at Texas 66-57

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Kansas State needed career highs from Cartier Diarra and Dajuan Gordon to knock off No. 12 West Virginia.

Diarra tied a career high 25 points, Gordon scored a career high 15, including 13 in the first half, and Xavier Sneed had 16, moving into the top 15 in school history in scoring to lead the Wildcats to the 84-68 win on Saturday.

The Wildcats secured their first Big 12 win of the season after losing the first four in conference play.

"I felt like all year we had it in us," coach Bruce Weber said. "But we really needed someone to step up for us."

Gordon went 6-for-7 from the field, had four steals and three rebounds in the win.

"I think as long as I come and play with some energy and be willing to play defense I'll make a big impact," Gordon said. "As long as we win, that's all that matters."

Kansas State (8-9, 1-4 Big 12) went up by as many as 23, but a 15-0 run by the Mountaineers cut the lead to eight in the second half, thanks in part to seven turnovers in four minutes by the Wildcats.

West Virginia (14-3, 3-2) would get as close as six, but the Wildcats held on and won by 16 for their third straight win against the Mountaineers.

"They were desperate," West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins said. "They did whatever they wanted to do."

Miles McBride and Chase Harler paced the Mountaineers with 11 points each, Gabe Osabuohein had 10 as West Virginia lost their first game when the trailed at halftime.

Turnovers proved costly for West Virginia as they committed 18 and Kansas State scored 28 off those mistakes.

"I'm getting used to the turnovers," Huggins said. "We average 20 a game, but we didn't guard. We just didn't."

Kansas State shot 59% from the field and held the Mountaineers to 45%. The Wildcats hit nine 3's while West Virginia had 41 bench points.

With two minutes left in the first half, it was a fastbreak dunk by Antonio Gordon assisted by Dajuan Gordon that got the crowd on their feet pushing the Wildcat lead to 11.

"I felt like I lit the room and got a lot of energy," Dajuan Gordon said. "Guys just kept hitting me and gave me the ball."

Kansas State held a 17-point lead at halftime and shot 58% in the first 20 minutes of play.

Every player except for one scored at least four points for the Wildcats and they scored the second most points in a game this season.

Kansas State will look to win two straight games on Tuesday for the first time since November 19th.

"Everyone knows Kansas has a good team," Diarra said. "We hope to do something that hasn't been done there in a while."

Kansas State: This was the best game played by the Wildcats all season. They needed a win like this one before taking on their in-state rival up next.

West Virginia: The Mountaineers had way too many turnovers and didn't shoot the ball very well.

Diarra, Gordon lift Kansas State over No. 12 West Virginia

David Dayne Glass, who served as President and CEO of Walmart Inc. from 1988 to 2000 when he led the company through extraordinary growth, died January 9, according to the Glass family. He was 84.

He died of complications associated with pneumonia, according to a media release from the Glass family.

Most recently Glass was owner and Chief Executive Officer of the Kansas City Royals, a team he helped lead to two consecutive World Series appearances and in 2015 brought the World Championship trophy to the fans of Kansas City. Glass and his family sold the Royals late last year.

A native of Mountain View, MO, Glass served in the U.S. Army after graduating high school from 1954-56. After leaving the Army Glass earned a business degree from Southwest Missouri State University, now named Missouri State University, in Springfield, MO.

Upon graduation Glass began his retail career in 1960 with Crank Drug Company in Springfield. He left Crank in 1968 after the company was sold and worked for two other companies, including serving as General Manager of Consumer Markets in Springfield. In 1976, Glass was recruited by Walmart founder Sam Walton to become Walmart's Chief Financial Officer.

Glass was named President and CEO of Walmart in 1988 and served in that role for 12 years. During his term in that role, Glass guided the company through a period of extraordinary growth both in terms of revenues and expansion including retail acquisitions, expansions including new retail formats and significant international expansion. Specifically, under Glass' leadership, Walmart:

Glass led a team of managers who adopted new and innovative technologies to streamline operations and improve customer service. This included the development of automated distribution centers, linked by computers to Walmart headquarters, stores and suppliers, which enabled the company to expand beyond a regional retailer to become an international retail leader.

Glass was also a mentor and leader to many who are now leading successful business careers and lives of their own.

Rob Walton, former Walmart Chairman and eldest son of Sam Walton, said the following:

"When we lost my Dad, David provided a steady, visionary hand the company needed to lead it forward. He did so with a deep sense of humility while maintaining the values and principles Dad founded the company on. A lifelong baseball fan starting as a child when he followed the St. Louis Cardinals, Glass was appointed interim Chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Royals in 1993 upon the death of then owner Ewing Kauffman. Glass and his family acquired the Royals in 2000 and it was at that time that he began his second career, a career in baseball, at age 64.

During his ownership of the Royals, Glass was an active member in Major League Baseball and served on key committees within the Major League organization. Glass was the Chairman of the Board of MLB Advanced Media, a member of Major League Baseball's Executive Council and a member of MLB Enterprise and Finance Committee.

Glass was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in July 2000, where he served as a member of the Pension and Audit Committees.
