ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western softball team (11-8) picked up a home opening sweep to push its win streak to five games Sunday at the Spring Sports Complex.  The Griffons came back to defeat Drury (9-9) 5-4 in game one before a run-rule, 10-1, win in game two. After the pair of wins, the Griffons have won eight of their last nine games 

Rian Gere's first collegiate home run was the game winner for Missouri Western. Gere lined a solo shot over the left field fence to lead off the fifth and break a 4-4 tie.

Drury scored three unearned runs in the first, but the Griffs answered with two unearned in the bottom half. The Panthers took a 4-2 lead on an RBI triple in the second. Then the Griffons scored four unanswered starting with an RBI single by Kayln Damgaard in the third. Brea Blanton drove in Markee Brown in the third to tie the game at four before Gere's game winner in the fifth.

Taylor Hoelscher went 2 for 3 in the game with an RBI and a run scored. Gere was also 2 for 3 and Sydni Hawkins had two hits in four at bats. The Griffons walked six times in the game and two Griffons were hit. Kelly Uthe went the distance to move to 5-4 on the season. She allowed four runs, just one earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter.

The Griffons jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on an Emma Hoffart two-RBI double, an RBI triple by Hawkins and Hoelscher's second double of the day. MWSU added three more in the third on a two-RBI single by Markee Brown and an RBI single from Gere. Hawkins drove in another in the fourth on a single and Brown picked up two more RBIs on a single in the fourth.

Hawkins went 3 for 3 in the game with two RBIs and three runs scored. Hoffart was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Brown drove in four on her two hits. Eight of nine Griffons in the starting lineup had at least one hit. Kaili Hinds moved to 5-2 on the season, holding Drury to three hits over five innings with two of those hits coming in the fifth. She gave up one run in the fifth and danced around six walks.

Missouri Western is scheduled to host Illinois Springfield in a three-game series beginning with a single game Monday at 5 p.m. The forecast may force a change to that schedule. The teams are also set for a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Missouri Western softball takes two from Drury to extend win streak to five

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The Northwest Missouri State University softball team topped Illinois Springfield in a doubleheader Sunday. The Bearcats won game one 9-8 and game two 14-6.

Illinois Springfield scored on an error in the first inning to grab an early 1-0 lead over the Bearcats.

The Prairie Stars hit a two-run homer in the top of the second inning to push their lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Karli Allen homered to left center to start the momentum for the Bearcats. Shortly after, Olivia Daugherty hit a grand slam to center field to give the Bearcats the lead, 5-3.

The Bearcats scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kaitlyn Weis homered to right field. Madison Friest was walked, allowing Erin Keeney to score. Grace Jeffries grounded out to the shortstop, but brought in Allen to score to push the Bearcat lead to 8-3.

Illinois Springfield scored one run in the top of the fourth inning off a RBI to make the score 8-4.

The Prairie Stars rallied in the top of the seventh inning scoring four runs and tying the game, 8-8.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jeffries hit a RBI single to give Northwest the 9-8 win in game one.

To start the first inning for the Bearcats, Olivia Daugherty homered to right field to give Northwest an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Daugherty hit a two-RBI single to bring in Ady Watts and Abby Nolte to score. Next at bat, Sydne Brashear hit a RBI single to center field, allowing Jacee Winn to score. Kaitlyn Weis then hit a RBI single to the pitcher, which allowed Daugherty to score and push the Bearcat lead to 5-0.

Winn singled to the pitcher and brought in Karli Allen to score to make it 6-0.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bearcats had four runs off five hits. Nolte doubled through the left side allowing Erin Keeney and Weis to score. Next at bat, Watts singled to right field to bring in Allen to score. Jeffries then hit a RBI single to left field to advance the Bearcat lead 10-0.

The Prairie Stars scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull within four at 10-6.

The Bearcats answered in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring four more runs. Allen hit a three-run homer to left field. Watts sealed the win with a RBI single to right field to end game two 14-6.

The Bearcats move to 9-13 overall on the season.

The Bearcats will be on the road next weekend as they will be traveling to Warrensburg and Jefferson City to face Central Missouri and Lincoln.

NOTES: Daugherty leads the team with a batting average of .390. She has six doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI. Weis is slugging a .359 average with four doubles, eight home runs and 20 RBI. Jeffries isn't far behind with a .353 average and two doubles with eight RBI.

Northwest softball sweeps Illinois Springfield Sunday

DESTIN, Fla. – Missouri Western Women's Golf began their spring slate with the opening round at the Emerald Coast Classic on Sunday. The Griffons are tied for seventh place amongst the 13-team field  with a team score of 332.

Allycia Gan finished round one with a score of 76. The freshman tied for eighth place overall after Sunday's performance. Tammy Lim had the next best finish for the Griffons with an individual score of 82 and placed tied for 26th.

Anna Bech finished tied for 38th place with an overall score of 85 headed into the next two rounds, while Cindy Herrera tied for 49th place with a first-round score of 89.

Madi Vine finished round one with a score of 94, respectively.

The Griffons will return to Baytowne Golf Club on Monday to compete in round two of the three-round event.

Kalscheur scored 26 points and tied a school record with eight 3-pointers on Sunday as Minnesota set a season-high in scoring with a 107-75 victory over Nebraska. Minnesota made a school-record 18 3-pointers, thanks in large part to Kalscheur, who went 7 for 8 from beyond the arc in the second half. "My confidence was high and my teammates found me," said Kalscheur, who was expected to be one of Minnesota's top scorers this season but entered Sunday shooting 26.2% from 3-point range in conference games. "The connection with the rim -- it felt like every shot was going in there in the second half." Marcus Carr had 18 points and 11 assists, Alihan Demir added 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Daniel Oturu had 10 points and six rebounds for the Gophers (14-16, 8-12 Big Ten, who were eighth in the Big Ten in 3-point shooting before lighting up the Huskers. Nebraska gets hammered by Minnesota 107-75

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A resurgent Missouri Western men's basketball season came to a close Saturday in the MIAA Championship semifinals. No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State (30-1) scored 51 second half points to come back and defeat the Griffons (18-14, 80-54 in Missouri Western's first trip to the round of four in 10 years.

Missouri Western took a 31-29 lead to halftime, its first halftime lead over the Bearcats in five years. MWSU shot 51.9% from the field in the first half and limited Northwest to 40% shooting. The Griffons forced six Northwest turnovers in the first half. MWSU started the game on a 9-0 run, shutting down Northwest on its first seven possessions of the game. The Bearcats answered with a 13-9 run, but MWSU came back to take the two-point lead to the half.

The second half was all Northwest. The Bearcats started the half on a 20-9 run and built its biggest lead of the game, 28 points, with less than a minute to play. Northwest shot 64.3% from the field in the second half and 57.1% from long range, making eight threes after halftime. 

- Northwest pulled down 38 rebounds to 22 for the Griffons and had 22 assists with Northwest dishing out six.

- MWSU committed just seven turnovers, but Northwest scored 15 points off those giveaways.

- The lead changed five times with five ties.

Griffons let halftime lead slip away, lose to No. 1 Bearcats in MIAA semifinals

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Dru Smith scored 17 points to lead Missouri to a 69-50 victory over Alabama in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday.

Mark Smith scored 13 points for the Tigers (15-16, 7-11 Southeastern Conference, Mitchell Smith added 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and Jeremiah Tilmon finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Missouri slowed the pace to its liking and held Alabama 33 points under its season scoring average.

Kira Lewis Jr. led the Crimson Tide (16-15, 8-10) with 18 points, Jaden Shackelford scored 13 and Galin Smith added 10.

Both teams played brutal offense in the first half, as each committed 12 turnovers. Missouri emerged with a 21-20 lead.

The Tigers went on a 10-0 run midway through the second half to take a 44-37 lead. They capped the run when Mitchell Smith saved a loose ball from going out of bounds and passed ahead to Javon Pickett, who scored and drew a foul.

John Petty Jr. returned for Alabama after missing the last two games with an elbow injury. Petty, who averages 15 points, scored one point in 34 minutes.

Missouri: The Tigers said goodbye to their lone senior, Reed Nikko. The 6-foot-10 center was a role player for most of his career but became a heavy contributor in the second half of his senior season, scoring double figures four times in SEC play. He scored three points and grabbed three rebounds against Alabama.

Alabama: The Crimson Tide lost for the fourth time in their last six games. Hopes for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament are long gone. Alabama, which entered Saturday ranked 50th in the NCAA’s NET power rankings, could still be in the mix for the NIT.

Mizzou closes regular season with 69-50 win over Alabama

LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 1 Kansas had the outright Big 12 title wrapped up before going back on the court after halftime. The Jayhawks then finished off something that hadn't been done in the conference in a decade.

Devon Dotson scored 17 points while Udoka Azubuike had 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Jayhawks beat Texas Tech 66-62 on Saturday. They became the Big 12's first champion with only one loss in league play since they were 15-1 in 2009-10, two seasons before the conference expanded to an 18-game round-robin schedule.

"Everyone in the locker room, that was our goal, to win it outright and don't share anything," Dotson said. "For us to go 17-1 is big. Hopefully we can build off of it. We're not satisfied. We have bigger goals and aspirations, but we can build off of this for sure."

Kansas (28-3, 17-1 Big 12) had already clinched at least a share of its 19th Big 12 title, the 15th in 16 seasons, with a win Wednesday night over TCU. The Jayhawks were outright champions by halftime Saturday, when second-place and No. 4 Baylor (26-4, 15-3) lost 76-64 at West Virginia.

"I just want to say it's a good conference," Azubuike said. "In the Big 12 there are all these teams that are competing all the time. A lot of people really don't know how hard it is with defense and everything. It's tough."

Texas Tech (18-13, 9-9, last year's national runner-up after sharing the Big 12 title with Kansas State, had a chance to tie the game with 2.8 seconds left. But Davide Moretti, who made a 3-pointer only seconds earlier, missed another one from long range. The Red Raiders guard fell to floor after contact with Marcus Garrett, but was no foul called.

"That's the best Kansas team I've seen," Tech coach Chris Beard said. "Dotson, the best guard in college basketball. Dok's the best big in college basketball and Garrett is the best defender in college basketball, and their role players just don't make mistakes."

Ochai Agbaji added 12 points for the Jayhawks. Garrett had nine points and eight rebounds, including a driving layup in the final half-minute of the game.

Moretti had 18 points, while TJ Hoyfield had 11 points for Texas Tech, which lost its fourth game in a row when trying to get back into the NCAA Tournament.

"I thought the guys played really hard," Beard said. "We didn't have any lapses of effort. ... We have seven turnovers, 40-minute game against Kansas. That's good. I thought the guys competed. They were dialed in. We didn't get too high or too low. We were right there. We gave ourselves a chance."

Azubuike put Kansas ahead to stay with his put-back dunk with 1:41 left that made it 59-57.

Holyfield's 3-pointer tied the game with 2:11 left and came during a stretch of just more than two minutes when he and Azubuike were trading points. Both had a free throw, then both had layups before Holyfield's 3 and Azubuike's go-ahead putback.

"It's just been a long grind and it's been pretty well-documented kinda the not the ups and downs of our season because our season has been primarily all ups, but guys dealing with a lot of stuff. Coaches dealing with some stuff," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "Keep focused. Stay disciplined. Stay responsible and to learn to grind. ... Guys deserve all the credit."

Kansas had a 32-24 lead after a 12-2 run over the final seven minutes of the first half, despite missing nine shots in a row. Tech missed nine of its last 10 shots. The Jayhawks then missed seven shots in a row early in the second half, allowing Texas Tech to tie the game at 37-all on Holyfield's 3 with 14 minutes left.

Kansas: The Jayhawks had never won 17 conference games in the same season. They had won 16 games three times (2002, 2012, 2017). Kansas finished 9-0 in Big 12 road games. They are a certain No. 1 seed, likely the top overall seed, in the NCAA Tournament regardless of what happens in the Big 12 Tournament.

No. 1 Kansas claims outright Big 12 title after 66-62 win at Tech

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Baseball tallied nine runs in three innings to top Rogers State on Saturday afternoon. The Griffons (7-15, 2-3 MIAA) topped the Hillcats (9-9, 0-5 MIAA) 9-7 in game two of the three game homestand against RSU.

Jack Schmedding got the start and the win for the Griffons. Through the first six innings of play, Schmedding allowed only three hits and a single run from the Hillcats. RSU's bats began to heat up in the eighth inning, however, as the Hillcats tallied six runs on six hits. Brock Wrolstad would come in for relief of Schmedding in the eighth as he struck out two batters to close the ball game and record his first save of 2020.

Offensively, the day started for the Griffons with Nolan Meyer. The senior would blast a solo home run highlighting a three-run outing in the second inning. From then on, it was all Missouri Western as they scored six more runs in the third and fourth innings to cap the run total for game two.

- The Griffons recorded 12 hits in game two. Nolan Meyer led the way, logging three hits and three RBIs on the day, while Zach Hanlan, Reid Briney and Chas Verduzco tallied two hits apiece.

- Hanlan also recorded three RBIs on the day, a career high for the freshman.

Following a stalemate in the first two innings, Northwest took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning following an RBI single by junior infielder Jacob Pinkerton. Redshirt freshman Caden Diel scored on the play.

Emporia State answered in the home half of the fourth inning, plating a sole runner and evening up the score at a run apiece at the halfway mark.

After a scoreless fifth by both squads, the Hornet offense crossed another single runner on an RBI single, taking their first lead of the afternoon 2-1.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, junior outfielder Donovan Warren blasted a solo home run over the left-center field wall to even up the score (2-2) heading into the final two innings of play.

In the eighth, after Northwest had a one-two-three inning, Emporia State retook the lead on a wild pitch that allowed a Hornet baserunner to score from third base. Entering the final inning of the contest, Emporia State led 3-2.

The explosive Bearcat offense put together a one-run rally in the top of the ninth to extend the game into the bottom of the inning. Junior outfielder Matt Gastner led off the inning by slapping a triple down to deep, right-center field giving Northwest life on the base paths. After a quick out, pinch hitter Trevor Dooley singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Gastner from third. As the second and third out were earned, the Bearcats stranded two runners on base in the inning.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Emporia State doubled to center field, putting the winning run 180-feet from home plate. After a quick second out, the Hornet offense singled to right field, allowing the runner on second to score and a walk-off win for the Hornets, 4-3.

Northwest baseball loses on a walk-off single at Emporia State

MANHATTAN, Kansas -- Xavier Sneed has played in an Elite 8, won a Big 12 Regular-Season Title and played in three straight NCAA Tournaments.

But Sneed had possibly the most memorable game of his career in his final act at home in a 79-63 win over Iowa State on Saturday afternoon.

He scored 31 points, went 10-of-21 from the field and hit four 3's while carrying the Wildcats to their first win since January 29th after losing 10 straight games.

"I just wanted to get a win," Sneed said. "I feel like I did a good job of helping us today."

The win marks the end of a regular season that featured the most losses in program history for Kansas State.

"I'm just happy for the seniors," coach Bruce Weber said. "They've worked so hard this season so I'm glad they finished with this win tonight.

Sneed finished his career in the top 10 in scoring and top five in steals and games played in school history.

"It's been a roller coaster here, but I've loved it," Sneed said. "The banners we've put up, and it's just been a surreal ride."

Cartier Diarra added 14 points, Mike McGuirl had 10 and the Wildcats went 13-18 from the free throw line.

Solomon Young scored 17 and Terrance Lewis had 11 for Iowa State, which has lost five of its last six games and four of those by double digits.

"Those seniors for Kansas State have done some special things so I wasn't surprised they played so well," Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said. "We are battling some injuries, so we just need rest before Wednesday."

Kansas State (10-21, 3-15 Big 12) made 52% of its field goal attempts (29-of-56) while Iowa State shot 38% (21-of-55).

The Cyclones (12-19, 5-13) went just 2-for-21 from the 3-point line as the Wildcats connected on eight 3's. Kansas State had 13 turnovers and Iowa State had 19, which the Wildcats turned into 25 points.

In his first career start, senior Pierson McAtee had a dunk on the opening possession and scored six points.

"It was actually a broken play," McAtee said. "It's truly special and I can't thank coach enough for giving me that opportunity to start tonight."

Up 18-15, the Wildcats went on a 14-1 run thanks to Sneed and Diarra scoring 12 of those points.

Sneed scored 14 of the first 18 points for the Wildcats including three 3's. Sneed had a career high at halftime with 26 points helping K-State post a 41-23 lead after 20 minutes.

Both teams will play in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament and look to make a run and extend their seasons.

"It's the best conference tournament in the country," Prohm said. "We're ready to go to Kansas City where we have great crowds and see what we can do."

Iowa State: Before tip-off, the Cyclones were locked into the eight versus nine seed matchup in the Big 12 Tournament. They seemed to know that because they showed a lack of motivation.

Kansas State: This was the best the Wildcats have looked the entire conference season. They will need to play this well again in Kansas City to win a few in the conference tournament.

Sneed leads K-State past Iowa State 79-63 to snap month-long skid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The survive and advance cliche fit perfect Friday night at Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium as Washburn (16-13) missed four shots in its final possession to send the Missouri Western men's basketball team (18-13) to the MIAA Championship semifinals with a 72-70 win over the Ichabods.

Jalen Lewis made a three with 54 seconds left to pull Washburn within two. The Griffons didn't score again and Washburn got the ball after two missed free throws by Tyree Martin with 13 seconds left. Tyler Geiman missed a layup, the Ichabods got an offensive rebound, Lewis missed a three, but Jonny Clausing pulled down an offensive board. Clausing missed his putback attempt, pulled down his own rebound then missed another as time expired.

Missouri Western led for nearly 37 minutes in the game, but a nearly four minute scoreless stretch late allowed Washburn to go on a 9-0 run. Tyrell Carroll ended the scoreless streak with a jumper with 1:08 left to put MWSU up 72-67 just before Lewis' three.

The Griffons won an MIAA Championship quarterfinal game for the first time in 10 years and got to 18 wins on the season to match the most for the program since going 18-10 in 2009-10. Missouri Western will face No. 1 Northwest Missouri State in the semifinals on Saturday at 6 p.m. It will be the third meeting between the two teams this season and the second in the last 11 days. After tomorrow's game, the Griffons will have faced just four teams in their last eight games.

- Defense ruled the second half of the game with both teams shooting just better than 30% from the field, making 10 field goals and three 3-pointers apiece.

- Washburn outscored the Griffons by one in the second half, going 7 of 14 at the free throw line while MWSU went 6 for 10.

- The Griffons knocked down one more three than the Ichabods and made five more field goals overall to make up for being out-shot at the free throw line 18-9.

- MWSU was also out-rebounded by 15 (50-35) and pulled down nine offensive boards to Washburn's 19.

- Tyus Millhollin led MWSU with 21 points and broke the program record for 3-point field goals in a season with his first of three makes on the night. 

- Millhollin also had a team-high five assists.

Lafayette boys defeat Kearney to win 5th straight district title; Benton falls short

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A sluggish second quarter by the No. 6-seeded Griffon women's basketball (21-8) team on Friday in the MIAA Championship quarterfinals gave No. 3 seed Nebraska Kearney (26-5) all the cushion it needed to eliminate Missouri Western, 68-82.

The Griffons went 3 of 12 from the field in the second quarter and were outscored 18-7 with the Lopers going 7 of 12 from the field. It helped UNK build a 12-point halftime lead after edging out MWSU 21-20 over the first 10 minutes. The Griffons outscored UNK 35-28 in the second half and whittled a 13-point UNK lead to four with 30 seconds left off a Katrina Roenfeldt three. MWSU continued to get some stops, but just could not get the big bucket to give the Griffons a chance for the win down the stretch.

- It was Nebraska-Kearney's first win over MWSU in the MIAA Championships in four tries.

- The Griffons had ended UNK's season each of the previous two seasons in the association's postseason tournament.

- MWSU had 12 steals on 15 UNK turnovers, but scored just nine points off those turnovers.

- The Griffons shot 52.9% in the first quarter, 53.8% in the third quarter and 40% in the fourth.

- Chris Wilson led MWSU with 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting and pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

Missouri Western women lose to UNK in MIAA Quarterfinals 68-62

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Missouri Western softball team (9-8, 2-0) swept a rivalry doubleheader Friday to get back over .500 and open MIAA play 2-0. The Griffons scored 21 runs on 22 hits and doubled their season home run total with six in 13-11 and 8-3 wins at Northwest Missouri State (7-13, 0-2).

Missouri Western didn't out-hit or out-homer the Bearcats in the opener but they won the stat that matters.

Brea Blanton homered twice and Chloe Armstrong got her first collegiate homer. Northwest hit five over the fence and had 16 hits as the Griffons used all three of their pitchers. Missouri Western trailed once on a 2-run Northwest home run in the first, but never trailed again.

Blanton finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Armstrong was 2 for 4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Taylor Hoelscher and Markee Brown had two hits apiece.

The Griffons took an early 2-0 lead, fell behind 3-2 then scored six unanswered to complete the sweep.

Sydni Hawkins got the rally started, driving in Emma Hoffart with a single in the sixth to tie the game. Hoelscher put MWSU up for good with a two-run home run in the sixth before Armstrong provided insurance with a three-run home run in the seventh. Armstrong had two hits and drove in three. Hoffart and Hawkins each had two hits. Kaili Hinds picked up the win, striking out seven and not walking any batters. She allowed two earned runs on nine hits.

Missouri Western hosts Drury in its home opener on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Western softball sweeps doubleheader at Northwest Missouri

EMPORIA, Kansas - Following a complete game from junior Max Spitzmiller, the Northwest Missouri State University baseball team completed a Friday win over Emporia State in game one of the three-day weekend stint, 6-1.

Spitzmiller completed his first complete game of the 2020 season, allowing one run (one earned) on four hits while adding nine strikeouts to his team-leading season total (27). In 32 batters faced, Spitzmiller only allowed two walks.

The Bearcat offense wasted no time putting runs on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first. Junior infielder Peter Carlson turned on the first pitch he saw and connected with a home run to left field.

Northwest kept the momentum in the second, adding two more runs and taking the 3-0 lead. With one out and two men on, junior DMACC transfer Jacob Pinkerton singled through the left side of the infield, advancing senior Tim Olson and scoring the speedy junior outfielder Donovan Warren from second base. Heads up base running allowed the ‘Cats to bring in the second run of the inning as Olson crossed on a wild pitch.

In the third, the Bearcats added two more insurance runs on four consecutive singles to the scoreboard, taking a 5-0 lead and turning on the cruise control. With one out, sophomore infielder Jordan Peck singled through the right side. Next up, sophomore Ryan Koski singled to center field, putting runners on first and second. With an 0-2 count, redshirt freshman Caden Diel singled to right field, scoring Peck and moving Koski to third. The fourth single came from Warren, who singled through the middle and scored Koski for the second run of the inning.

Following stagnant fourth and fifth innings from both squads, Northwest plated another run and increasing its lead to 6-0 over Emporia State. With one out, Carlson ripped a double to right-center field and advanced to third on a misthrow. Carlson scored on the next at bat on a groundout by senior first baseman Connor Quick.

In the seventh, Emporia state jumped on the board following a solo homer to left field and inched back at the Northwest lead, 6-1. This as the only blemish on Spitzmiller’s resume on the afternoon.

The Bearcats would hold the Hornet offense scoreless in the final two innings of play to take game one of the three-game stint.

Northwest will be back in action for game two of the three-day weekend series Saturday, Feb 7. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Northwest has won seven of the last eight matchups with the Hornets.

Northwest baseball wins series opener at Emporia State

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Baseball picked up its first conference win of the season on Friday afternoon. The Griffons (6-15, 1-3 MIAA) topped Rogers State (9-8, 0-4 MIAA) 6-5 in game one of a three-game series with the Hillcats.

Rogers State scored first with a single run in the second inning. The Griffons would answer, however, scoring three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. The Hillcats would follow with four runs on four hits and an error in the sixth to re-take the lead 5-3. MWSU sealed the game following this offensive output with three runs to round out the final score 6-5.

Roy Robles got the start on the mound for the Griffons. Robles pitched five of nine innings, striking out four batters on the day. Justin Wood received his second victory of the season in relief of Robles. The freshman pitched two innings, striking out two Hillcats and only allowed one hit. Brian Tan also got his second save of the year as he closed the ball game.

- The Griffons out-hit the Hillcats 9-7 in game one. Andrew Meier and Zach Hanlan each added two hits, while Reid Briney, Nolan Meyer, Zach Pych and Chas Verduzco each had a single hit.

MWSU baseball knocks off Rogers State 6-5 for first MIAA victory

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcat men's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the 2020 MIAA Tournament with a 75-54 triumph over the Lincoln Blue Tigers at Municipal Auditorium.

Northwest extended its win streak to 21 straight games and moved to 29-1 on the season. Lincoln completes its season at 11-19 overall.

Senior Ryan Hawkins led the way with a game-high 33 points. Hawkins tallied 21 first-half points and added 14 in the second half. Hawkins went 11-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Hawkins sank all five of his free throw attempts. Hawkins was credited with a game-high nine rebounds.

Sophomores Trevor Hudgins and Diego Bernard joined Hawkins in double-figure scoring. Hudgins posted 14 points and was 4-of-6 from three-point range. Bernard was 6-of-8 from the field and dished out a game-high five assists.

The Bearcats used a 29-8 run in the second half to open up a 70-41 lead over the Blue Tigers.

Northwest shot 50.0% in the opening half and then blistered the nets for 66.7% in the second half. Lincoln was limited with 43.6% shooting for the game.

The Bearcats will play in the semifinals on Saturday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Washburn-Missouri Western contest that takes place on Friday.

No. 1 Bearcats open MIAA Tourney with 75-54 win over Lincoln

The Central girls basketball team won its first district championship since 2016 as the Indians beat Staley 35-31 in the Class 5 District 16 title game.

Central fell behind early in the second quarter, but they used an 8-1 run to take the lead for good.  The Indians led 16-15 at halftime and Staley tied the game twice in the second half but never took the lead.

CHS junior Lauren Eiman and sophomore Ella Moody scored all 19 second half points for the Indians.  Eiman finished the game with 14 points and Moody added 13.
