Bishop LeBlond's Smith, Central's Hopkins win Scholar-Athletes of the Year Awards

St. Joseph Sports Inc. held its annual banquet virtually on Wednesday to honor outstanding male and female scholar-athletes in the city.

Bishop LeBlond's Juliann Smith is the female winner this season and Central's Cole Hopkins won the male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Smith and Hopkins were chosen by the St. Joseph Sports Inc. Board of Directors as there was one male and one female nominee from each of the five St. Joseph High Schools. Each winner receives a $1,000 scholarship.

The other nominees each receive a $500 scholarship, and those nominees include Benton's Jadynn Peters and Hunter Armstrong, Bishop LeBlond's Kanon Sumpter, Central's Kacey Duvall, Lafayette's Tarrin Deayon and Ethan Lowe, and St. Joseph Christian's Jacqueline Carlson and Brent Boyd.

Criteria for being a nominee includes the demonstration of academic excellence with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average, outstanding athletic performance, dedication to good citizenship and active involvement in extracurricular activities.
