CHICAGO -- Yu Darvish pitched seven dazzling innings in his seventh consecutive win, and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Friday night in the opener of a big five-game series.

Led by Darvish and Willson Contreras, Chicago won for the fourth time in five games and strengthened its grip on the top spot in the NL Central. St. Louis dropped into a virtual tie with Milwaukee for second, 4 1/2 games back of the Cubs.

Contreras had three hits and four RBI, including a leadoff drive in the sixth for his fifth homer. He also had a big two-run single on the ninth pitch of his at-bat against Jack Flaherty in the first.

Darvish (7-1) was working on a perfect game before Matt Carpenter opened the sixth with his second homer, a drive to the basket in right-center on the ninth pitch of the at-bat. The Japanese right-hander then retired his last six batters, striking out three more to give him 11 on the night.

With less than a month left in the pandemic-delayed season, the 34-year-old Darvish looks like a leading candidate for what would be his first Cy Young Award. He improved to 11-5 with a 2.26 ERA in his last 21 starts dating to last season, with 181 strikeouts and just 15 walks.

Rowan Wick worked the eighth, and Jeremy Jeffress finished the two-hitter for his fifth save.

Flaherty (2-1) got off to a tough start and never quite recovered, allowing four hits and walking two in 2 2/3 innings.

Chicago forced the ace right-hander to throw 43 pitches in the first. Jason Heyward's eight-pitch walk with two outs loaded the bases for Contreras, who drove in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo with a single to center.

Contreras added another two-out RBI single in the third, making it 3-0 and chasing Flaherty.

Cardinals: C Matt Wieters (broken toe) was activated from the 10-day injured list. C Andrew Knizner was optioned to the team's alternate training site. ... LHP Andrew Miller (shoulder fatigue) is with the team in Chicago, and manager Mike Shildt said he could come off the IL on Saturday.

Cubs: OF Ian Happ was out of the starting lineup one day after he was hit in the face by a ball after it bounced off the plate. Happ, who is day to day with a right eye contusion, saw a doctor Friday morning. "With all the eye tests he's had and stuff put in his eye ... I just think it's best if we give it a little bit more time," manager David Ross said.

The Big 12 Conference today announced its football game cancellation thresholds.  The minimum number of players required to play a game has been set at 53.  The number is based on the entire roster, including all scholarship and walk-on players. 

Additional minimum thresholds of available players were also established for offensive linemen (7), interior defensive linemen (4) and quarterback (1).  Teams falling below any of these benchmarks, based on game week test results, could still elect to play as scheduled if so desired.  Otherwise, upon approval by the Commissioner, the game would be declared a no-contest if it cannot be moved to a later date.

The Conference’s “9+1” 2020 schedule features a full round-robin among Big 12 teams, plus one non-conference game.  The schedule provides each team with two bye dates, plus the option to move the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship back one week to December 19 if needed.  Open dates will be used for rescheduling games in the event a team does not have enough players to compete. 

The non-conference portion of the Big 12 schedule kicks off next weekend, with Conference play beginning September 26th.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Luis Robert's 458-foot home run capped a second five-run inning of the night for Chicago as the White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 11-6 Thursday night.

Robert was one of three White Sox to homer in the contest, joining Edwin Encarnacion and Tim Anderson.

"It was a very well-struck ball," manager Rick Renteria said. "It was a pretty swing, and he got all of it."

The White Sox pulled within a half-game of the idle Cleveland Indians for the lead in the American League Central. They lead the third-place Twins by one game.

Dylan Cease (5-2) picked up the win. He allowed three runs on four hits in five-plus innings. Cease only had one 1-2-3 inning, but he kept the Royals at bay.

"I don't think I executed that great," Cease said. "There was a lot of room to get better."

Danny Duffy (2-3) took the loss for Kansas City, and he wasn't happy about it.

"Nothing felt physically off in terms of stuff, it's just that I couldn't put my fastball where I wanted it today. There will be days like this. I walked five people," Duffy said. "I think I might have doubled my walks this year. The free passes are what really kind of irks me. I've worked my butt off the last year to eliminate those. The five in a game is just unacceptable but so is five runs in an inning."

The Royals got a run in the first when Hunter Dozier lined one over the wall in left center.

The White Sox answered in the second when Encarnacion blasted one 442 feet to left leading off. With one out, Duffy walked Robert, gave up back-to-back singles and walked Tim Anderson to force in a run.

Anderson, who is a career .300 hitter against the Royals, said familiarity breeds success.

"Nothing against them. I'm just locked in, I guess. I mean, you face these guys so many times, you kind of know what they want to do or what they're thinking. For me it's just being on time."

After a wild pitch scored another run, Duffy walked Yasmani Grandal to load the bases again. Jose Abreu doubled off the wall, scoring two more. Alex Gordon's 101st career outfield assist led to an out at the plate and the end of the inning.

Anderson extended the lead to 6-1in the fourth with a one-out home run.

Back to back doubles leading off the bottom of the sixth by Maikel Franco and Alex Gordon ended the night for Cease. Edward Olivarez, making his Royals debut, singled and then Nicky Lopez drove in Gordon and Olivarez with a double to right.

But the White Sox came storming back scoring five runs off reliever Jake Newberry in the seventh. Newberry faced six batters and five scored. Abreu drove in one with a single and Yoan Moncada drove in another with a sacrifice fly before Robert's home run.

The Royals added a couple of runs in the eighth on RBI groundouts.

Royals RF/DH Jorge Soler was not in the lineup after coming out of Wednesday's game with oblique irritation. Manager Mike Matheny said he was pleased with the progress he had made since Wednesday, and listed him as day-to-day.

The Royals recalled OF Edward Olivares from the Royals alternate site. He was acquired in the trade that sent closer Trevor Rosenthal to the Padres. To make room on the roster, LHP Randy Rosario was designated for assignment.

The White Sox will send rookie RHP Dane Dunning (0-0, 2.89 ERA) for his second straight start against the Royals. In his last outing, he threw five hitless innings, allowing only one walk and only one out to leave the infield.

Major League Baseball today announced that Ian Kennedy was named the Kansas City Royals 2020 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, baseball’s most prestigious individual honor for Major Leaguers.

The Roberto Clemente Award is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. 

As part of the annual program, each MLB Club nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.  Wednesday, September 9th marks the 19th annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy as a humanitarian and to officially acknowledge local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award. As part of the league-wide celebration, the Roberto Clemente Day logo will appear on the bases and official dugout lineup cards and a special tribute video will be played in ballparks. 

Ian Kennedy is one of the 30 Club nominees for the annual award. When the pandemic struck, he immediately jumped to action and supported the Royals Charities Royals Respond Fund.  Later, as the 2020 season started, he created the initiative, K’s for a Cause, in which he donates $5,000 for each strikeout he throws to Head for the Cure, which supports who have or have had brain cancer as well as their loved ones, and Consider the Lily, which focuses on putting an end to human trafficking.

For the last three seasons, Kennedy has also hosted a fully catered dugout suite on Saturday nights in which he brings in local charities, primarily those connected with first responders and the military.  He also has supported many other Royals Charity associated events and groups including the on-field gala Diamond of Dreams, the Broadcast Auction, Braden’s Hope Calendar and hospital visits. Kennedy named Royals' 2020 nominee for Roberto Clemente Award

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Triston McKenzie tossed six innings of three-hit ball to celebrate his 23rd birthday, Tyler Naquin hit a pair of homers for the only runs of the game, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 on Wednesday night.

McKenzie (2-0) needed just 81 pitches thanks to six strikeouts, no walks and some slick defense behind him. His bullpen went the rest of the way, holding the Royals without a hit over the final three innings.

"I mean, the nerves are definitely still there beforehand. I don't think that's ever going to go away," McKenzie said, "but I'm going out there and feeling more comfortable in terms of treating it like a learning experience."

Naquin's first homer was a two-run shot off Jakob Junis (0-1) in the second inning. Naquin then provided his relievers with some much-needed breathing room by adding a three-run homer off Scott Barlow in the ninth.

"He was unbelievable. His swing is the best I've seen it," Indians interim manager Sandy Alomar Jr. said. "He did the work this offseason. He kind of restructured his swing a little bit -- he's been more efficient with his swing. Pretty good."

The result was the fifth consecutive loss in a series-deciding game for the Royals, and their 10th straight defeat in rubber games involving Cleveland. In fact, Kansas City has won just three of its last 35 games to decide a series.

"A couple balls we did hit hard just seemed to be at people," Royals manager Mike Matheny said. "Just couldn't put the hits together."

McKenzie had a lot to do with it Wednesday night. The youngster, who missed all of last season with injuries, retired the first 10 batters he faced. And when he ran into the slightest bit of trouble, his defense was there to help.

The first time came when Hunter Dozier hit an infield single to deep shortstop; he was wiped out by an inning-ending double play. The next came when the Royals put runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, and Carlos Santana snared a sharp grounder by Adalberto Mondesi, stepped on first and then doubled Ryan McBroom off third.

And when McKenzie whiffed on a grounder in the sixth, Francisco Lindor was there to field it and throw the runner out.

"I just wanted Frankie to make the play," McKenzie said with a grin.

Junis was nearly as good with the exception of a couple of base hits and the big mistake to Naquin. The right-hander set down the Indians in order in the first and third, and he was cruising along in the fourth when Josh Naylor's line drive hit Junis in the right arm between the biceps and triceps -- he recovered to throw out Naylor and end the inning.

Junis was removed before the start of the fifth for precautionary reasons.

"He was really on track right there, in my mind," Matheny said. "He's getting good, quick outs and was on a nice little roll there. He probably had two more innings of keeping us in the ballgame. Just a bad break there."

A single by Franmil Reyes in the first inning was his eighth consecutive hit, the longest streak by an Indians player since Julio Franco also had eight hits in a row in June 1988. Reyes' streak ended with a fly out to right field in the fourth.

Royals blanked by Indians in series finale 5-0

CINCINNATI -- Joey Votto's single in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in Shogo Akiyama with the winning run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Facing Giovanny Gallegos (1-1), Akiyama and Curt Casali walked with one out and Votto delivered a sharp line drive to right to send Akiyama sliding across the plate and extend his hitting streak to six games (9 for 20, .450) after sitting out three games.

"I wanted to be instinctive," Votto said. "I wasn't doing much thinking. Early in the season, I may have complicated some things. I think at times you have to let go."

The Cardinals had loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Raisel Iglesias (2-2) struck Tyler O'Neill and Lane Thomas to escape.

"I saw Tyler miss a pitch he fouled right back," St. Louis manager Mike Shildt said. "He kind of made some tough pitches. We weren't able to put the ball in play. You've got to put that ball in play."

"Iglesias has been in that situation more than anyone," Reds manager David Bell said. "His back was against the wall. Joey is another guy who has been in that situation more than anyone. There is no one you would want up there in that situation more than Joey."

The Reds avoided a three-game sweep to finish 3-4 on a homestand against the Cubs and Cardinals, two of the teams they're chasing in the NL Central.

"The time is for sure running out," Votto said. "We're playing the teams above us. They are big games, for sure."

One night after the Reds needed five relievers and an infielder to pitch during a 16-2 loss, an efficient Tyler Mahle turned in a season-high seven innings. Mahle yielded four hits and three runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

Yadier Molina led off the Cardinals' two-run fifth with his second homer of the season, a liner to left that clanged off a metal banister. O'Neill doubled to deep left-center field with one out and scored on Kolten Wong's two-out double to left-center.

St. Louis starter Johan Oviedo lasted two outs into the fifth inning, allowing three hits and three runs with one walk and five strikeouts. He hit two batters, both in the fifth.

Oviedo hit Akiyama with a pitch with one out in the fifth inning. Tucker Barnhart followed with his second homer of the season, a line drive to center field that barely cleared the glove of a leaping Lane Thomas.

Brad Miller picked up where he left off on Tuesday, clubbing a shot to center field leading off the second inning for St. Louis, his fifth homer of the season. He hit a pair of two-run homers on Tuesday.

Eugenio Suarez led off the bottom of the second with a double to left-center field, went to third on a wild pitch to Mike Moustakas and scored the game-tying run on Akiyama's two-out single up the middle.

After Wednesday's last out, the Reds posted on the Great American Ball Park scoreboard a tribute to the late Tom Seaver, who passed away on Monday. Seaver pitched for the Reds from 1977-82.

The Cardinals' day off on Thursday is their last of the season. They are scheduled to play 30 games over the last 23 days of the season, making up postponements mandated by COVID-19 protocols.

The Reds will bat in the bottom of each inning of the second game of Friday's doubleheader in Pittsburgh to make up for one of the two games in Cincinnati in mid-August were postponed after a Reds player tested position for COVID-19. Cincinnati still will be considered the visiting team.

"This decision was made out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our student-athletes," stated Commissioner Lori Thomas. "The conference and teams are adhering to the outlined guidelines in the Heart Promise."

The decision comes after contact tracing and quarantine procedures were enacted. Quarantine results when individuals come in close contact to a positive COVID-19 case, so some players on both teams had to complete a 14-day quarantine. Delaying this game will allow student-athletes to return to the field of play in the safest manner possible by allowing the appropriate time for practice and physical reconditioning. 

The make-up date for the Ravens-Bobcats is set for Oct. 10 back on the Benedictine campus with kickoff set for 1 p.m. That date was originally scheduled as a bye week for teams around the Heart as they transitioned from cross-divisional play to divisional play on Oct. 17.

The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell, and the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

Knowles is the second Wildcat to be a candidate for the award as running back John Hubert – a Waco native – was a preseason candidate in 2013.

A product of Mansfield, Texas, Knowles played in 11 games with eight starts last season, hauling in 27 catches for 397 yards and three touchdowns as he earned votes from the league’s coaches for the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award. He also returned six kickoffs for 222 yards and a touchdown. His return touchdown was a 100-yarder at Mississippi State to tie the game in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats went on to win, 31-24.

K-State’s Knowles placed on Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Zach Plesac returned to the Indians with six solid innings after being punished for breaking coronavirus protocols, and Cleveland beat the Kansas City Royals 10-1 Tuesday night.

The right-handed Plesac (2-1) allowed a run and four hits, striking out six and walking none. The 25-year-old has a 1.33 ERA in three starts this season.

Plesac hadn't pitched since Aug. 8 after being caught breaking curfew with rotation-mate Mike Clevinger. Plesac and Clevinger were placed on the restricted list and later demoted to the alternate site as punishment. Clevinger returned and made one start last week before being traded to San Diego on Monday, opening a spot for Plesac.

Francisco Lindor and Franmil Reyes homered in the first and Roberto Perez homered in the second, all off Kansas City starter Matt Harvey. Reyes, who had never had a four-hit game, went 5 for 5 with two doubles and a homer.

Harvey (0-2) had failed to get out of the third in his first two starts with the club, but this was his shortest outing yet. He gave up five runs and six hits in 1 1/3 innings, with all the runs coming on home runs.

Cleveland's Cesar Hernandez led off the first inning with an infield single, and with one out, Lindor ripped one just inside the foul pole for a two-run home run. One out later, Reyes launched a shot to right center for a 3-0 lead.

Perez extended Harvey's trouble with a two-run home run into the right field bullpen. After allowing another hit and a walk Harvey was done for the night.

Plesac continued to cruise. He retired 12 straight and faced one over the minimum through four innings.

The Indians added a run in the sixth. Delino DeShields reached on a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Jose Ramirez hit a sharp single off the glove of first baseman Ryan O'Hearn, and DeShields scored.

The Royals finally got a run off Plesac in the sixth when Hunter Dozier lined a home run into the bullpen in right field.

Cleveland got three more runs in the seventh, and one in the eighth on Ramirez's eighth home run.

Royals SS Adalberto Mondesi was not in the starting lineup for the first time this season, but it's for a "mental break," according to manager Mike Matheny. "You give a guy a day off without him feeling like he's been grounded." Mondesi has the lowest OPS in Major League Baseball among players who qualify at .451.

The Indians will send RHP Triston McKenzie (1-0, 2.70 ERA) to the mound in the series finale. McKenzie had a spectacular debut, striking out 10, but struggled a bit in his second start. He gave up two runs on three hits in four innings against St. Louis.

Jakob Junis (0-0, 4.26) will get the start for the Royals. Junis gave up two runs on four hits over 3 2/3 innings in his last start in St. Louis. He struck out six.

In July, the SEC established September 26 as the new kickoff for its 2020 football season to allow its universities to focus on the healthy return of their campus communities and the gradual re-introduction of athletics, as the 14 members of the SEC continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19.

Kickoff times and networks were announced for the first two weeks of the SEC football season and selected games were announced for three other Saturdays later in the year. Given the unique circumstances of this season, the SEC requested that its television partners make advanced game selections where possible prior to the start of the season to assist the Conference and schools with planning and logistics.

CINCINNATI -- Brad Miller homered twice and drove in a career-high seven runs, and the St. Louis Cardinals pounded Sonny Gray and the Cincinnati Reds 16-2 on Tuesday night.

Miller sparked St. Louis' six-run first inning against Gray with a two-run double that glanced off the glove of diving first baseman Joey Votto and bounced down the line. He hit a two-run shot in the second, an RBI single in the fifth and another two-run homer in the eighth, clanging a drive off the foul pole in right.

Kolten Wong went 4 for 4 and scored four times as the Cardinals set season highs for runs and hits with 23. St. Louis has won three straight games after a four-game losing streak.

It was the worst loss of the season for the free-falling Reds, who have dropped three straight and four of five. They have been outscored 33-8 during the losing streak.

St. Louis left-hander Kwang Hyun Kim (2-0) pitched five innings of three-hit ball, extending his scoreless streak against the Reds to 11 innings over two starts. No Reds baserunner got past second base against him.

partners announced game times and television designations for the first weekend
of action and select games throughout the season.

The Wildcats’ September 12 home opener against Arkansas
State is slated for a 2:30 p.m., kickoff on FS1. Following a bye week, K-State

(September 1, 2020) – After careful consideration and concern for the health and well-being of our fans, employees and players, the Kansas City Royals announced today that Royals FanFest 2021 presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City has been cancelled.  The original event was scheduled for January 29 and 30, 2021.  

Royals FanFest has been the annual winter event, thanks to our fans and partners, that thousands attend every year.  The Club determined that staging an in-person Royals FanFest the way the fans have enjoyed over the years would not be possible this coming January.  

The Royals also announced that FanFest 2022 will be held January 28 and 29 at Bartle Hall at the Kansas City Convention Center.  Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City will return as title sponsor.  Schedules and more details will be released at a later date.

Jayhawk football season opener slated for FS1

Savannah High School has canceled its next two varsity football games after a player on the Savages roster tested positive for COVID-19.

Savannah was supposed to play at Lathrop this week and then travel to Kirksville in week three.

Savannah High School shut down early on Monday after learning of the positive case and the district reported two new cases and six total.  In a release, the school said they closed early Monday "Because the specific positive cases resulted in the potential for SEVERAL student/ staff contacts, a decision was made to release all students for the afternoon so that more definitive contact tracing could be done."  Classes are expected to resume Tuesday at SHS.

All activities and practices were also canceled Monday.  The Savages played Excelsior Springs Friday and the Excelsior school district announced that its entire football team and staff would quarantine until further notice due to the case.

Savannah cancels next two football games because of positive COVID-19 test

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Maikel Franco and Bubba Starling had RBI singles in the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Cleveland Indians 2-1 on Monday night in the first game of a three-game series.

It was the Royals' first win this season when trailing after seven innings.

"They just keep playing," Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said. "That's the message before the game. We're going to be sticklers on the little things.

"They just continued, even when we were down. I still felt like we were about to do something."

Scott Barlow (2-1) picked up the win in relief for Kansas City. He pitched one inning, allowing two hits and no runs. Greg Holland recorded his second save.

James Karinchak (0-2) took the loss. He walked the first two batters he faced, and they scored on the hits by Franco and Starling.

"It was tough; I haven't had an at-bat in a week," Starling said. "I've been going in on defense and running the bases. But I continued to stay locked in. Going into that at-bat against a sinker-slider guy, I just tried to stay to the middle, to the big part of the field."

Shane Bieber continued his stellar start to the 2020 season. He threw six scoreless innings, striking out nine and allowing just one hit. He also lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.20, and increased his major league lead to 84 strikeouts.

"It was a tough one," he said. "I never fell into a rhythm. I'm a guy that kind of depends on getting into a rhythm early. That's generally when I have my best outings. I kind of struggled to find that rhythm.

It was a little bit of a frustrating outing, but all in all we ended up making it work."Brad Keller allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings on three hits. He walked just one and struck out four."I felt like racked up my pitch count in the first inning," Keller said. "I felt like I finally got into a groove, but not until the fourth, fifth or sixth inning. I was finally able to put the fastball where I wanted to."The pitcher's duel came as no surprise, with Bieber and Keller on the mound. Bieber came in leading the MLB with a 1.35 ERA in seven starts. Keller did not allow a run in his first three starts after beginning the season on the injured list recovering from COVID-19. He allowed five runs on six hits in four innings in his last start, and had a 2.08 ERA.The starters lived up to the hype. Through six innings, Bieber and Keller had allowed one hit each. Keller retired 11 straight at one point.The Indians finally got to Keller in the seventh. After retiring Francisco Lindor leading off, he gave up a single to Carlos Santana, and then an RBI double to Franmil Reyes. Keller left after allowing one run on three hits. It was one too many against Bieber.Once Bieber left the game, the Royals got two runners on in the seventh. But Nick Wittgren made an over-the-shoulder catch on a Whit Merrifield line drive to end the threat.TRAINER'S ROOMRoyals C Salvador Perez remains on the 10-day injured list, but is building up his workload, according to manager Mike Matheny.
