Missouri Western men's, women's basketball fall at Central Missouri Thursday

The Missouri Western men and women's basketball teams each played their first games in two weeks Thursday at Central Missouri.

The Griffon women lost to the 17th-ranked Jennies, 66-45, marking their seventh straight loss and dropping  their record to 2-8 this season.

Asia McCoy and Jordan Cunningham led Missouri Western with nine points each. McCoy tied a career-high with nine rebounds, while Logan Hughes added eight points and five rebounds.

Meanwhile, the 23rd-ranked Griffon men lost its second consecutive game for the first time this season, as they fell at Central Missouri, 70-64. The Griffons fall to 8-3 this season.

 After going back-and-forth with UCM in the first ten minutes, Central Missouri went on an 18-2 run to build a 15-point lead, 32-17. Western ended the half strong to get back in the game as they scored eight straight and eventually trailed 34-25 at halftime.

Central Missouri extended its lead to 61-48 with 11 minutes to play, but the Griffons then outscored UCM, 16-3, over the next 10 minutes to tie the game 64-64 with 1:11 left in regulation, but MWSU failed to score again. The Mules scored on their final three possessions.

Caleb Bennett led Missouri Western with 19 points and a career-high six rebounds. JaRon Thames and Will Eames added 11 points each and Tyrell Carroll scored 10 points to go with five rebounds and five assists.

Both Griffon teams stay on the road Saturday, going to Jefferson City to face Lincoln University. The women tip off at 1:30, with the men to follow at 3:30.
