The Iowa State Cyclones used a strong first quarter Saturday to get by the Kansas Jayhawks 52-22 at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.&nbsp; The Cyclones took advantage of the 11 a.m., start and outscored the Jayhawks 13-0 in the first quarter.&nbsp;

Kansas (0-6, 0-5 Big 12) answered back in the second quarter when true freshman running back Daniel Hishaw Jr., scored his first-career touchdown when he scampered in from five yards out on a direct snap out of the “Wildcat” formation.

Iowa State (4-2, 4-1) responded with a touchdown with four minutes remaining in the first half to go up 20-7. Kansas marched down the field on its final drive, but missed a field goal with one second left in the half to keep the deficit at 13 points.

The Jayhawks were led Saturday by their freshmen once again. Freshman quarterback Jalon Daniels threw for 135 yards in the first half with his favorite target being fellow true freshman Luke Grimm. Grimm had four catches for 53 yards in the first half alone.

Defensively, freshman Marcus Harris picked up a tackle-for-loss to give him 6 ½ over his last three games. Fellow freshman lineman DaJon Terry also picked up his second-career sack and has one sack in each of the last two home games.

Daniels finished 165 passing yards, completing 16-of-29 passes. He also led the team in rushing yards with 36. He had 58 rushing yards before sacks were accounted for. Kwamie Lassiter II led the team in receiving with five catches for 66 yards. Andrew Parchment had three catches for 27 yards and found Lassiter on a pass play for a two-point conversion after the Daniels touchdown.

The Jayhawks will return to action Saturday in Norman against Oklahoma. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., and will be televised by either ESPN or ESPN2.

&nbsp;Taking the field as a road underdog on Saturday afternoon wasn't new for No. 16 K-State. Leaving after a 37-10 loss to West Virginia in their first Big 12 defeat of the season was a different experience for the Wildcats.

K-State (4-2, 4-1) came up with two sacks and jumped out to an early lead in Morgantown, before West Virginia (4-2, 3-2) used a strong second quarter to put away the Wildcats. 

The Mountaineers racked up 301 yards through the air on a short-handed K-State secondary.

Malik Knowles came up with a 35-yard touchdown grab to give the Wildcats a boost heading into the break. Getting the wide receivers more involved has been a point of emphasis for K-State and Knowles' first touchdown catch of the year was a highlight for the group on Saturday. 

Phillip Brooks hauled in four receptions for 39 yards to lead all K-State receivers in Morgantown. 

Early in the second half, the K-State defense did their part to get back into the game, holding West Virginia to a field goal attempt at the goal line. The Mountaineers would settle for four field goal attempts on the afternoon.

An interception returned for a touchdown on the Wildcats' next drive of the game would prove to be the tipping point. West Virginia brought the nation's top defense - among teams that have played at least two games - into Saturday's game and held K-State to just 225 yards of total offense.

Deuce Vaughn rushed nine times for 22 yards in the loss, as Kansas State struggled to get going on the ground against a tough Mountaineers rush defense.

Saturday also marked the first game of the season where the Wildcats failed to come up with an interception, while three picks helped the West Virginia defense control the flow of the game.

K-State returns to Manhattan for their next Big 12 matchup, a clash with No. 6 Oklahoma State on November 7 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game will air on ABC at 11 a.m. or FOX at 3 p.m.

West Virginia snaps Kansas State's four game win streak with 37-10 win

Mizzou Football dropped a 41-17 decision at No. 10/9 Florida Saturday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The loss snapped a two-game Mizzou winning streak as the Tigers fall to 2-3 on the season. Florida improves to 3-1 on the year.

Mizzou got a pick-six score from junior CB Jarvis Ware but failed to get much going offensively. Junior LB Nick Bolton continued his All-SEC caliber season with 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss as he continues to lead the team in tackling this season. 

Sophomore LB Devin Nicholson posted a career-high 13 tackles as well, his second double-digit tackle outing this season.

On each of Florida's first two offensive series, the Gators drove the ball down into the red zone. Coming into the game, Florida had converted touchdowns on 12-of-15 red zone appearances, settling for field goals just three times. But that's exactly what Mizzou forced Florida to do on each of those drives, keeping Mizzou in the game with Florida leading 6-0 after the first quarter.

Mizzou then grabbed momentum midway through the second quarter, thanks to an incredible effort by the defense. Junior All-SEC LB Nick Bolton broke through the Florida line and got a hand on Florida QB Kyle Trask's arm as he unloaded, causing an underthrow, which was read by Mizzou CB Jarvis Ware. 

Ware, a Florida native, slowed up and caught the short throw for an interception and returned it 59 yards for a score, giving Mizzou a 7-6 lead. It was Mizzou's first interception since last year at Vanderbilt, snapping a nine-game streak without a pick. It was Mizzou's first pick-six since Cale Garrett had one against Troy last year .

Florida tacked on a TD on an 18-yard screen pass from Trask to Kadarius Toney to take a 13-7 late in the quarter. Mizzou tried to go up-tempo on the ensuing possession, but a third-and-one fumble gave Florida the ball back deep in Mizzou territory. Florida added another TD, this time a 30-yard strike from Trask to Toney, on the very next play and took a 20-7 lead into the half.

The Gators added another Toney score to open the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Both Mizzou and Florida may be facing a slew of suspensions, following a massive brawl prior to halftime.&nbsp; Following a big hit on Trask, both the Tigers and Gators exchanged words at midfield, and punches were thrown by both teams.

Head coaches Dan Mullen of Florida and Eli Drinkwitz of Missouri were seen exchanging words, the brawl ending with Mullen pumping up the crowd as he ran into the tunnel

Mizzou will be on a scheduled bye week next weekend before returning home to play No. 5 Georgia on Nov. 14. The time and TV designation for that contest will be set on Monday.

Missouri falls in Gainsville on Halloween to Gators 41-17

Missouri Western football  (0-1) fell in its first game of the 2020 season to FCS Division I opponent Central Arkansas (4-4) 52-10. The Griffons entered Saturday's opener without three of their five defensive coaches, including defensive coordinator Justin Richter, all who were quarantined due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Griffons came out strong, scoring their only touchdown of the game on their opening drive. After a 66-yard return by Trey Vaval on the opening kickoff, it took Missouri Western only six plays to get in the endzone. Running back Jared Scott punched it in for a one-yard score and Thomas Kopcho's extra point gave MWSU a 7-0 lead in the game's first two minutes.  

After the Griffon defense forced a three and out, the #10 ranked team in FCS, found its stride midway through the first quarter, with two big touchdown catches from Tyler Hudson.  UCA rolled off 45 straight points, taking a 38-7 lead to halftime.  Western didn't score again until a Roland Tyson 33-yard field goal in the third quarter. 

While MWSU's COVID-testing has resulted in very few positive results, The Griffons were without six starters primarily due to injury.

This game marked the first career start for four of the five Griffon offensive linemen. Keegan Zars -the only lineman with starting experience- started just one game in 2019. 

In his second career start for the Griffons, sophomore quarterback Anthony Vespo was 16-25 and threw for 143 yards.

The Griffons will return to Spratt Stadium for their home opener on Saturday, November 7th against Pittsburg State at 3:00 pm.

Wisconsin's football team has paused all team-related activities for at least seven days because of an increased number of COVID-19 cases, causing the No. 9 Badgers' game against Nebraska on Saturday to be canceled.

The Wisconsin football program now has 16 active cases of COVID-19 after two additional staff members and one student-athlete tested positive since late Wednesday.

Even though Wisconsin did not reach the Big Ten "red/red" level with its team and population positivity rates that automatically triggers a seven-day pause in team activities, the decision to pause was made jointly by athletic director Barry Alvarez and chancellor Rebecca Blank after the recent rise in positive tests.

Big Ten protocol states that teams that reach the "orange/red" area of testing may "consider viability of continuing with scheduled competition."

Big Ten athletic directors unanimously voted that if a school determines it cannot play because of test positivity rates within the team population, the game will be declared a no contest, not a forfeit. And if those rates are outside of the "red/red" category, a school's president or chancellor, athletic director and other leaders may work with medical and public health authorities -- in addition to the Big Ten office -- to determine whether a game should be canceled or any other adjustments.

The Big Ten requires teams to play at least six games to qualify for the division championship, unless the average number of games by all league teams drops below six. In that case, teams must play no less than two fewer games than the average number by all teams to be considered for the division championship.

The Big Ten has nixed a proposed deal that would have allowed Nebraska to replace its canceled game Saturday against Wisconsin with a game against FCS foe Chattanooga.

Big 12 Conference announces men's basketball schedule 

Following a record-setting performance in the Sunflower Showdown, Kansas State sophomore Phillip Brooks has been named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

Brooks' weekly honor is the seventh for the Wildcats this season, which are the most since the 2017 team had eight.

A product of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Brooks returned four punts for a school-record 189 yards with two touchdowns against Kansas, the most punt-return touchdowns in school history. Brooks' yardage record edged out David Allen's mark of 172 against Texas in 1998. 

His single-game yardage total ranks third in Big 12 history and was the most by a Big 12 player since 2009. Additionally, his 47.25-yard average was the highest nationally since 1996 among players with four or more returns.

Brooks became the first player in the nation with two punt-return touchdowns in a single game since Greg Dortch of Wake Forest in 2018, while he is the first Big 12 ever player to do so in a conference game.

Bolton led one of Mizzou's most impressive defensive performances in recent memory, posting seven tackles (all solo), 1.0 sack and a QB hurry as the Tigers limited Kentucky to just 145 total yards, its best ever in an SEC game, in a 20-10 win that snapped a five-game losing skid against the Wildcats. Mizzou's defense was sensational Saturday at Faurot Field, holding Kentucky's offense to 145 total yards (47 passing yards, 98 rushing yards), with the microscopic 47 passing yards allowed being the fewest ever by an SEC opponent since Mizzou joined its new conference in 2012. 

The Tigers limited Kentucky's offense to only 36 plays from scrimmage overall, which stands as the fewest plays ran by an opposing team in 22 years, as Bowling Green tallied 35 total plays on Sept. 5, 1998. The 145 total yards allowed by Mizzou's defense was its best in a conference game since Nov. 26, 2011, when it limited Kansas to 137. Kentucky picked up just eight first downs on the day, two of which came via penalty.

Cook was a leader on Mizzou's offensive line that absolutely dominated the line of scrimmage against a great Kentucky defensive line. Playing 94 snaps Saturday, including 92 offensive plays, Cook helped Mizzou hold the ball for a whopping 43:10, the Tigers' highest single-game TOP since joining the SEC, while running 92 plays with 62 coming on the ground. 

The 62 rushes were the second-most ever by Mizzou in an SEC game and most since rushing 67 times at Tennessee on Nov. 19, 2016. The 220 rush yards allowed by Kentucky was the most against the Wildcats since Oct. 19, 2019, when Georgia put up 235 on the ground in a 21-0 win. The 62 rushes were the most against Kentucky since Sept. 3, 2016, when Southern Miss had 68.

Mizzou was an unbelievable 14-for-25 combined (56 percent) on third and fourth down, using its offensive line to get tough yards drive in and drive out. As a unit, the offensive line allowed just seven negative plays on 92 offensive plays, controlling the game and beating Kentucky at its own game. Mizzou's 92 plays limited Kentucky to just 36 offensive snaps, the fewest against a Mizzou team in a league game since 1966 (Kansas State ran 36 in a 27-0 Mizzou win). Cook played 94 snaps on Saturday as the team's ironman at right guard.

Kansas State hosted Kansas for the Sunflower Showdown, and started off fast on way to their 12th straight victory in the matchup.&nbsp; Special teams was the highlight of the day as sophmore Phillip Brooks set a K State record with 189 punt return yards, taking two of his four returns back for scores in the first half

It was Brooks first return of the game that got the Cats started, following a three and out, Brooks almost did not get an opportunity to return the ball, as Kansas would punt it out of bounds, but a penalty forced Kansas to kick again, and Brooks would take advantage fielding the ball at midfield

In his freshman season Brooks had 120 punt return yards and one touchdown, but against Kansas he would surpass that by halftime.&nbsp; Following a touchdown pass from freshman Will Howard to Samuel Wheeler, Brooks would end the first half taking a punt back 52 yards for a score, to put the Wildcats up 34-7 at half.

This was the Jayhawks first game since running back Pooka Williams Jr. announced that he was opting out for the remainder of the season, and running backs Velton Gardner and Jalon Daniels split the load for them, with Gardner carrying the ball 16 times and Daniels with 17 carries, both Kansas touchdowns coming from Daniels

In the win over Kansas, Kansas State scored 21 points on defense and special teams, boosting their nation leading amount of non offensive touchdowns up to 122 over the last decade

Kansas State is currently ranked #16 in the nation, moving their record overall to 4-1, their only loss being a non conference loss to Arkansas State at the start of the season, the Wildcats are 4-0 in the Big 12, sitting atop conference&nbsp;

Meanwhile Kansas with the loss falls to 0-5, 0-4 in the Big 12, losing their ninth game in a row dating back to last year, their last win coming in Big 12 play against Texas Tech in 2019.

Kansas State will hit the road this weekend and will head to Morgantown for a matchup with West Virginia, while the Jayhawks will return back to Lawrence to look for their first win against another ranked opponent as they host Iowa State

First year head coach Eli Drinkwitz said that he was "shocked by these stats" and that he had "never seen a game like this, as the Tigers defense held Kentucky to 145 total yards of offense, 47 passing and 98 rushing, which is the first time since 2016 that Mizzou allowed less the 150 total yards.

For the second time this season running back Larry Rountree III ran for over 100 yards, tallying 126 yards on the ground on 37 carries, adding two touchdowns.&nbsp; Rountree has now moved into third place on Mizzou's all time rushing yards list, running for 3,144 yards in his career, and fifth on Mizzou's all time rushing touchdowns list, getting his 28th and 29th in this game.

With one game already being postponed until later this season, the Tigers are now 2-2 on the abbreviated conference only season.&nbsp; Next up the Tigers will travel to Gainsville on Saturday, for their rescheduled matchup with the Gators.&nbsp; Kickoff is set for 6:30 pm

Missouri defense holds Kentucky to 36 offensive snaps in 20-10 victory

DENVER (AP) — Tyrann Mathieu recovered an early fumble to start a snowball effect as the the Kansas City Chiefs took advantage of four turnovers in a 43-16 win over the Denver Broncos. 

It was all fun and games in the snowy conditions for the Chiefs. The Broncos were given the cold shoulder as they dropped their 10th straight game to their AFC West rival. Melvin Gordon had two fumbles and Drew Lock threw two interceptions.

Following the signing of running back Le'Veon Bell, fans wondered how head coach Andy Reid would distribute the ball between the veteran tailback and rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and Edwards-Helaire showed early that he was still the lead back, running hard early and carrying the ball in for an 11 yard touchdown run

Denver would follow that touchdown up with a drive that ended in a punt, but a fumble by backup tight end Nick Keizer would give them the ball right back, allowing former Missouri quarterback Drew Lock to drive down the field, taking the ball in himself on an option from 2 yards out.

It would be all Kansas City from that point though, following a Chiefs field goal, as the defense would take over with Mathieu recovering the fumble from Melvin Gordon, and then Daniel Sorensen on the next Broncos drive intercepted Lock and took the ball back 50 yards for a touchdown

The Chiefs executed well in all phases of the game, as they changed up their kickoff return man in this game, putting former Kansas State wide receiver and returner Byron Pringle back, and Pringle showed his return ability, taking the ball back 102 yards for a touchdown that put the Chiefs up 24-9, which was the score at halftime

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri wide receiver Maurice Massey has been dismissed from the team after he was arrested during the weekend. 

Boone County Sheriff's department records show Massey was arrested Sunday on suspicion of third-degree domestic assault, fourth-degree assault and first-degree property damage. 

Massey has not played this year after opting out because of the coronavirus outbreak.He was a three-star recruit from St. Louis. The Tigers play at Florida this weekend.

Bishop Leblond will finish their season with a record of 4-4, finishing up their second season in the 8 man ranks, having won as many games combined as they have over the past three seasons.&nbsp; They finished the 2020 season winning three straight, prior to their game against Northwest Hughesville being canceled on Friday

Leblond is the second St. Joseph school to end their season, St. Joseph Christian announcing prior to week 9 of the season that they would have to quarantine and cancel their regular season finale, also leaving them without enough players to play a district game in Class 1 District 8.&nbsp; St. Joe Christian will be returning to 8 man football next season after two seasons in the 11 man ranks, going 0-13 over those two seasons

• Howard, who became the first K-State true freshman signal caller to win his first road start, earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors following the game against the Horned Frogs.

• Another true freshman, running back Deuce Vaughn, continues to impress as he leads the team in rushing and receiving, the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both categories.

Sunflower Showdown between Kansas State and Kansas set for Saturday

Major League Baseball and Rawlings have announced the lists for the finalists for the 2020 Rawlings Gold Glove award.&nbsp;The Kansas City Royals have two finalists for the award.

The award, given to the best fielder in baseball, has three finalists at each position, except for American League second base and National League right field with four finalists.&nbsp; The award will be presented to the winner on Tuesday, November 3rd.

Left fielder Alex Gordon, whose won the award seven times in his career, will be seeking his eighth award, which would tie him with Royals great Frank White for the most in Royals history.&nbsp; Gordon announced his retirement at the end of last season

The award in the American League for second base has four finalists, all of which will be first time winners if given the award, all from the American League Central.&nbsp; The Royals Nicky Lopez joins the Indians Ceasar Hernandez, the Tigers Jonathan Schoop, and the White Sox Danny Mendick.&nbsp; Lopez led the American League second baseman with eight defensive runs saved during this past season

In the National League the Cardinals have three finalists.&nbsp; First baseman Paul Goldschmidt is once again competing with the Cubs Anthony Rizzo for the award.&nbsp; Either Goldschmidt or Rizzo have won the award in six of the past seven years.&nbsp; This would be Goldschmidt's fourth Gold Glove, his first since joining the Cardinals

Much like in the American League, the National League second base award will also be awarded to someone from the National League Central as the Cardinals Kolten Wong is up against Adam Frazier of the Pirates and Nico Hoerner of the Cubs. Wong is the reigning Gold Glove&nbsp; winner, which was his first time winning.

Tyler O Neill finally got his opportunity to be an everyday starter for the Cardinals in 2020 and in doing so got the opportunity to show off his defensive ability in left field.&nbsp; O'Neill is up for the award for the first time in his three years in the major leagues, leading all National League left fielders with nine defensive runs saved, but did not record any outfield assists.

Rawlings announces 2020 Gold Glove finalists

Kansas running back Pooka Williams is opting out of the rest of the season for personal reasons, he announced on Monday.

Williams, a junior who has been the Jayhawks' leader in all-purpose yards in each of his three seasons on campus, said in a tweet posted Monday afternoon that he is opting out to be closer to his mother and family in Louisiana.

"Family and health are the most important things to me," Williams said in a statement. "Right now I need to be with my mother, who is battling health issues.

"I want to thank Coach Miles and everyone with the Kansas Football program for their commitment and understanding."

Williams is the team's second-leading rusher this season with 196 yards and two touchdowns. He has been the team's leader in that department the past two seasons, rushing for more than 1,000 yards each time. He was a preseason first-team All-Big 12 selection this year.

On Monday, he was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week after returning a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown on Saturday in a loss to West Virginia. It was his 17th touchdown of any kind he had scored in his Kansas career.

It is yet to be seen what will come of Williams future at Kansas or if he will return.&nbsp; For now the Jayhawks will turn to sophomore running back Velton Gardner to take the ball out of the backfield.&nbsp; The Jayhawks first game without Williams will be the Sunflower Showdown, as they head to Manhattan to take on Kansas State
