The University of Kansas announced Monday that it will begin its fall sports season without fans upon the recommendation of its pandemic medical advisory team.

That includes the Jayhawks’ football season-opener against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 12, along with volleyball, soccer and cross country contests.

The prohibition of fans includes tailgating for football at Memorial Stadium and games at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, Rock Chalk Park and Rim Rock Farm through September.

The school plans to revisit the situation before its football game against Oklahoma State on Oct. 3.

Kansas Chancellor Doug Girod said “this is the right decision for our community at this time.”

Missouri State University Bearcats will remain decked out in Adidas gear for
the foreseeable future as the Department of Athletics has announced that its
exclusive apparel contract has been renewed through 2026. 
Adidas will continue to equip Bearcat athletics along with more than 100 other
collegiate programs in all NCAA divisions across the country. The athletics
apparel company also has marketing agreements with the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and
MLS. 
MB2 Sports, out of the Kansas City area, will service the contract and provide
support to Bearcat athletics. Mike Maslowski,

Normally held in June, but moved to August due to the COVID-19 pandemic, proceeds from this years event eclipsed over $104,000.  "We are extremely grateful to all of our sponsors, golfers, auction bidders and volunteers for their overwhelming and outstanding support toward this years event," Tournament Director Brett Esely said.  "With the function being so vital to both Griffon Athletics &amp; the YWCA, to have a record setting year in a challenging climate is simply remarkable and we are thankful for everyones flexibility in sticking with us and for taking part."

The auction portion of the event took on a new look this year with a mobile bidding feature and live steam which aided tremendously with the record results.  Bidding on items, which included: trips, sports memorabilia, golf packages, pub decor, MWSU items and theme baskets began on August 15 and closed the evening of August 24.  Then participants took to the links on Monday, August 24 at St. Joseph Country Club for a day of golf on one of the areas best courses.  In all, 34 foursomes participated in the event.

This is the single biggest fundraiser that Griffon Athletics conducts on an annual basis with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit the St. Joseph YWCA Shelter for Abused Women &amp; Children.

For participants wanting to participate next year, the event hopes to return to it's normal date formula of early June.

MWSU/YWCA Charity Golf Classic draws record success

CHICAGO -- As soon as bat met ball, Luis Robert knew. The prized rookie watched as his first game-ending home run sailed over the wall and the White Sox once again grabbed a share of the AL Central lead.

Robert belted a three-run drive in the 10th inning that gave the Chicago White Sox a 5-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

Dane Dunning threw five no-hit innings before being pulled from his second major league start, and the surging White Sox won for the 11th time in 13 games to move into a first-place tie with Cleveland in the AL Central.

Kansas City reliever Tyler Zuber (1-2) intentionally walked Jose Abreu to start the 10th, putting runners on first and second before James McCann struck out. Robert drove the next pitch a few feet beyond the left-field wall after being retired on two long fly balls earlier in the game. The home run was the Cuban slugger's ninth, tops among big league rookies.

"I am super happy," Robert said through a translator. "Very excited about this moment. ... It's very special. But I still know that I have a lot of room to improve and to keep learning this game. I'm just going to keep working hard and doing whatever it takes to get better."

Five days after Chicago ace Lucas Giolito tossed the first no-hitter of this pandemic-shortened season, Dunning put on quite a performance of his own.

The 25-year-old right-hander struck out seven and allowed just one runner, when he walked Maikel Franco on a 3-2 count with one out in the third. Dunning threw 79 pitches, 45 for strikes, after being recalled from Chicago's alternate training site.

The White Sox were rolling along with a 2-0 lead in the sixth when Cam Gallagher broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out double against Jimmy Cordero. Whit Merrifield drove in Gallagher with a single and tied it in the eighth with a solo homer against Steve Cishek.

Chicago's James McCann walked and scored in the second and smacked an RBI double in the third. Nick Madrigal had three singles and an RBI.

Abreu extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and the White Sox bounced back from a loss to take two of three from the AL Central's last-place team.

Alex Colome worked around two singles and a walk in the ninth, retiring Adalberto Mondesi on a liner to first with two on to escape the jam. The Royals also had runners on first and second with two outs in the 10th after Jace Fry walked Nicky Lopez and Merrifield. Matt Foster (3-0) struck out Hunter Dozier to end the threat.

The Royals wasted a solid start by rookie Kris Bubic and lost for the sixth time in eight games.

Bubic gave up two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old lefty struck out eight and walked two.

"Obviously we feel like we're a better team than last year," Merrifield said. "We've got to do a better job of finding ways to win. Hopefully this will be a leaning experience and next time we're in a situation like this, we can figure out a way to come across with a win."

The Royals called up hard-throwing prospect Carlos Hernandez from their alternate site to boost their short-handed bullpen. The 23-year-old right-hander had never pitched above Class A. But with reliever Ian Kennedy (calf) hurt and Trevor Rosenthal traded to San Diego on Saturday, Kansas City needed help.

Royals: Manager Mike Matheny said C Salvador Perez continues to experience the discoloration in his vision that landed him on the injured list Aug. 21. ... Matheny had no update on Kennedy, saying trainers were "still taking a look at everything" and "seeing how it looks this morning." Kennedy was hurt fielding a grounder on Saturday, and Matheny said after that game a trip to the injured list was a possibility.

White Sox: 3B Yoan Moncada was held out of the lineup after he irritated the back of his left leg running the bases in the ninth on Saturday. ... LHP Gio Gonzalez (strained right groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list.

Royals lose at Chicago in 10 innings on Robert's walk-off HR

ST. LOUIS -- Adam Wainwright turned back the clock with a complete game on his 39th birthday as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cleveland Indians 7-2 Sunday.

Wainwright threw a four-hitter for his 23rd career complete game and first in four years. The Cardinals snapped a four-game skid in which they scored six total runs.

"It's just, you know, a lot of hard work from a lot of different people have gone into making me able to pitch this year and pitch well," an emotional Wainwright said. "You know, when you think you're done three years ago, and you're able to complete a game a couple years later, it's a crazy life, a crazy game."

A little later, Wainwright was the target of some good-natured ribbing from younger teammates. When the Cardinals arrived at the airport for their trip to Cincinnati, he was given a wheelchair ride to the plane courtesy of fellow pitcher Jack Flaherty, who waited in full PPE with a small, handwritten sign seeking "Mr. Adam Wainwright."

"He respects his elders so much," Wainwright tweeted. "Good one young fella."

Dexter Fowler homered and had three RBI for St. Louis, which stopped Cleveland's four-game winning streak. The Indians had won nine in a row on the road.

Wainwright (3-0) settled in after allowing a two-run homer to Tyler Naquin in the second inning. The right-hander struck out nine and walked two, going the distance for the first time since July 16, 2016, against the Marlins.

The performance even prompted the entire Indians team to salute him after the final out.

"That was special," Wainwright said. "I'll never forget it. Appreciate it. Thank you very much, Cleveland."

Just as gratifying, he gave a much-needed breather to a St. Louis bullpen that worked 15 1/3 innings over the previous two games.

Wainwright knew the importance of going deep and told Cardinals pitching coach Mike Maddux before the game that he had 120 pitches in him. Wainwright finished with 122, the most by any pitcher this season.

"I know our bullpen is taxed, and the guys were tired and they just needed a break," Wainwright said. "Nobody feels sorry for us but, you know, this game is such a grind, mentally. Physically everybody's in very good shape, but it's such a grind mentally to play that many games and not have any off days and then go into extra innings and play really tough opponents that are grinding out at-bats."

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt called the outing the stuff of legend.

"That veteran leadership -- the right kind of veteran leadership matters -- and him and Yadi (Molina) clearly demonstrated that today. And a game that, you know, got us back on track," Shildt said.

Fowler's two-run double was followed by Dylan Carlson's two-run single to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead in the second. St. Louis had mustered just three runs in the past 28 innings before the outburst.

Paul Goldschmidt scored on a balk by Aaron Civale in the third.

Fowler sent the second pitch from reliever Cam Hill into the Cardinals' bullpen behind the right-field wall leading off the seventh. Molina made it 7-2 with an RBI single in the eighth.

"Waino is 39 but he looked young and proved that he has more baseball in him," Molina said.

Naquin lined a changeup just over the right-field fence to put the Indians ahead 2-0 in the second. It was originally ruled a double, but a replay review showed the ball cleared the wall instead of bouncing off it.

The drive extended Naquin's hitting streak to 10 games.

Civale (3-4) gave up a season-high five runs in six innings.

"He commanded the edges incredibly," acting Indians manager Sandy Alomar Jr. said of Wainwright. "Give him credit, he never leaves balls in the middle of the plate. . It's hard to put barrel when you're on the edges. He was very sharp."

With the start against the Indians, Wainwright has made at least one versus every team except the Cardinals.

Molina played in his 2,000th game, third-most in franchise history. The star catcher's second-inning single gave him 1,981 career hits, passing Red Schoendienst for sixth place in franchise history.

Cardinals RHP Ryan Helsley (COVID-19) threw a bullpen and will join the team on its upcoming road trip. Shildt expects Helsley to be activated early this week.

Indians: RHP Shane Bieber (6-0, 1.35 ERA) starts Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Kansas City. Bieber pitched six innings as Cleveland beat the Royals 2-0 in the first game of the season July 24. Brad Keller (3-1, 2.08) goes for Kansas City.

Wainwright throws CG on 39th birthday, Cards top Indians 7-2

CHICAGO -- Maikel Franco and Ryan McBroom homered during Kansas City's five-run seventh, and the Royals cooled off the Chicago White Sox with a 9-6 victory on Saturday.

Ryan O'Hearn and Alex Gordon also went deep for Kansas City, which had dropped five of six -- including consecutive 6-5 losses where the opponent won in its final at-bat.

"Those were crushing blows, especially the one in St. Louis," Gordon said. "Those are hard to forget, but this one felt good."

The last-place Royals finalized a trade during the win, sending reliever Trevor Rosenthal to San Diego for young outfielder Edward Olivares and a player to be named. They could look to move more players ahead of Monday's trade deadline.

"I can't say enough about Trevor Rosenthal. I'm a big fan of the player and the man," Royals manager Mike Matheny said.

Edwin Encarnacion homered and Tim Anderson had four hits for the White Sox, who had won three straight and 10 of 11 to move into a tie for the AL Central lead.

Chicago has 52 homers in August, establishing a franchise record for any month. The previous record of 51 also was achieved in August 2001 and July 2003.

The White Sox rallied in the ninth, scoring three times on Anderson's RBI double and a throwing error on reliever Ian Kennedy. But Jesse Hahn came in and struck out Yasmani Grandal and Jose Abreu for his first save.

Jake Newberry (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth for the win.

Kansas City went ahead to stay in the seventh. McBroom connected against Zack Burdi (0-1) with one out, tying it at 3 and setting a Royals record with his third pinch-hit homer this season.

O'Hearn added a two-out RBI single before Franco hit a three-run drive to center for his sixth homer.

Chicago manager Rick Renteria said Burdi's command "was a little off."

"I'm sure this will be a big lesson for him," he said. "Velocity gets hit in the major leagues, hanging breaking balls get hit. You have to hit your spots."

Royals belt four home runs, defeat White Sox 9-6

ST. LOUIS -- Tyler Naquin hit a go-ahead double in the 12th inning, then Yadier Molina made a baserunning blunder and got trapped for the final out Saturday to give the Cleveland Indians a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

A day after getting 20 hits in a rout, the Indians totaled just five in winning their fourth in a row.

"It is a lot of fun. It's a good energy," Indians starter Carlos Carrasco said of the winning vibe. "Everyone is kind of together right now."

Naquin doubled off Alex Reyes (1-1) to drive in pinch runner Mike Freeman, who started the inning at second base. That was Cleveland's only hit after the eighth inning.

Molina, who grounded into an inning-ending double play in the 11th with runners on first and second, began the 12th at second base as the automatic runner under MLB's extra-inning rule.

The slow-footed Molina moved to third on a wild pitch by Brad Hand, and stayed there when Dexter Fowler grounded out.

Matt Carpenter followed with a grounder that first baseman Carlos Santana fielded near the bag. He touched the base for an out, then bobbled the ball for a moment.

Molina was partly down the line toward home, and Santana cut across the diamond with the ball. Molina put up his hands, appearing to indicate he thought Carpenter's grounder was foul, and was easily tagged out in a rundown to complete a double play.

"When he hit the ball to first base, it looked like it was fair from the dugout," Indians acting manager Sandy Alomar Jr. said. "Automatically we went back to the bag and Molina just stood there, I don't know if he knew that the ball was fair or foul but from the dugout it was way fair."

Carrasco allowed two hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six scoreless innings for his quality start since Aug. 6 versus Cincinnati.

"We had a lot of opportunities and we couldn't get the hit," Shildt said. "I know the effort's there but it's the execution lacking. We didn't help ourselves in a couple areas."

Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty allowed one run on three hits and two walks in five innings.

Jose Ramirez connected in the Cleveland first for his seventh home run of the season.

KANSAS CITY, MO (August 29, 2020) – The Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Edward Olivares and a player to be named from the San Diego Padres Saturday in exchange for pitcher Trevor Rosenthal.

Olivares, 24, has played 13 games with the Padres this season, after making his big league debut on July 25. In 127 games with Amarillo (AA) last season, the right-handed hitter batted .283 (138-for-488) with 25 doubles, two triples, 18 homers and 85 runs scored. He swiped 35 bases to finish third in the Texas League, behind Royals’ outfielders Khalil Lee (53) and Nick Heath (50). He also finished 10th in the league in on-base percentage (.349), drawing 43 walks. 

Olivares recorded 103 stolen bases in his minor league career, after he was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as an international free agent on July 2, 2014 out of Caracas, Venezuela. CHICAGO -- Yasmani Grandal hit his third career game-ending home run in the ninth after a defensive miscue as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Friday night.

Yoan Moncada had an RBI single in the seventh, Eloy Jimenez added a two-run homer and Luis Robert also homered for the White Sox who have won 10 of their last 11 games and eight straight at home.

Trailing 5-4 in the ninth, Ryan O'Hearn drew a one-out walk off White Sox closer Alex Colome. Maikel Franco followed with a liner to left-center. The White Sox caught Franco in between first and second. First baseman Jose Abreu tried to run him down but Franco got to second base before Abreu's diving attempt of a tag. While Abreu was sitting on the ground near second base, Abreu threw to the plate. Grandal wasn't looking for the throw and the ball got by Grandal, allowing pinch-runner Bubba Starling to score to tie the score.

"A very bizarre play. As I am thinking, it's a dead ball as soon as Abreu falls on the ground. I am looking at the runner at third and he is standing at third, he's not going anywhere," Grandal said. "Right after that, I have to figure out if the dugout wants to challenge or not and let the umpire know we're trying to challenge the play. As that happens, I turn around and see the ball going through my legs. Like I said before, it's something to learn from, make sure I am aware as to when the play is over and when the umpire is actually calling timeout."

Grandal made up for everything when he broke a 5-5 tie with a leadoff homer off Ian Kennedy (0-2) in the bottom of the inning.

"I've caught Kennedy before and I had plenty of AB's against him. I kind of had a pretty good idea of what I wanted off of him in order to take a good swing at it," said Grandal.

Colome (1-0) finished the game by getting the final four outs after blowing his first save attempt.

The White Sox moved into a tie with the Twins for first place in the AL Central.

Jorge Soler hit a two-run home run and Whit Merrifield added a solo shot for the Royals, who have lost all four of their games to the White Sox this season.

"We fought so hard to get back, every time in that game, multiple times. ... That's one of the worst feelings as a reliever, getting walked off," said Kennedy.

Royals manager Mike Matheny wants to see his team take advantage of situations when opponents give them a break.

"For our team to take that next step, we have to be relentless in those situations," Matheny said. "We can't let teams off the hook as often as we have. We're facing major league-caliber pitching. I get it. It's just that it's going to continue to be the conversation. They're going to get sick and tired of hearing about it, but it's too big of a piece of the puzzle for us, to not make a mark early, to not figure out how to get it done late."

Royals reliever Tyler Zuber, activated from the bereavement list before the game, walked Jimenez to start the seventh on four straight pitches. He gave up a single to Grandal, One out later, he was relieved by Scott Barlow, who walked Edwin Encarnacion to load the bases. After Franco was unable to make a running overhead catch in foul territory, Moncada ripped a single to right to put the White Sox ahead 5-4. Barlow escaped further damage by getting Robert to line out and Danny Mendick swinging.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning with two outs, Tim Anderson hit a liner off the right thigh of Royals starter Danny Duffy. Duffy didn't appear hurt despite getting a visit from the team trainer. Two pitches later, Jimenez teed off on a fastball, driving it deep into the ivy in center-field to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead. It was Jimenez's 11th of the season and it measured at 452-feet.

Moncada chased Duffy with a two-out single in the sixth inning. Robert reached on a single off Royals reliever Jesse Hahn and Mendick struck out but reached on a passed ball by catcher Cam Gallagher to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Nomar Mazara added another run by drawing a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead.

The White Sox lead was short-lived. Reliever Matt Foster allowed a one-out walk in the seventh, then Soler followed with a two-run shot on an 0-2 pitch to tie the game at four it was his eighth of the season.

With two outs in the second, Robert hit an opposite-field home run into the Royals' right-field bullpen. It was the rookie's 8th of the season.

Merrifield tied the game in the third with a leadoff shot on a high 2-1 fastball. It was his sixth of the season. White Sox starter Reynaldo Lopez then surrendered three consecutive hits. Ryan O'Hearn hit an RBI single to put the Royals ahead 2-1.

Lopez was pitching in and out of trouble all night. Lopez allowed two runs on six hits in four innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Before the game, the White Sox acquired speedy outfielder Jarrod Dyson in a trade with Pittsburgh to boast their depth as they make a run for the postseason. Dyson came in as a defensive replacement in the ninth for Jimenez in left.

Duffy allowed four runs, three earned on seven hits. He struck out six and walked one in the no-decision.

Grandal and his teammates weren't looking to make a statement by not playing on Friday. Grandal pointed to the significance of Jackie Robinson Day. If you don't play today than what is the point? We thought today was the day to play. If it wouldn't have been Jackie Robinson Day today we could've possibly taken a different route, but we thought today was definitely the one day we needed to play."

INF Nick Madrigal, one of Chicago's top prospects, returned to the White Sox. He separated his left shoulder in his fifth game with the team. The 23-year-old second baseman was selected by the White Sox with the fourth overall pick in the 2018 draft. Catcher Zack Collins was optioned to Schaumburg to create a spot for Madrigal. Madrigal did not play on Friday night.

Brady Singer (1-3) is scheduled to start for the Royals against the White Sox on Saturday. The right-hander is 0-1 in three road starts this season with a 4.02 ERA.

RHP Dylan Cease (4-2) is scheduled to start for the White Sox on Saturday. He is 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA in his last five starts. He is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA against the Royals in his career.

Royals fall at Chicago 6-5 on Grandal's walk-off home run

ST. LOUIS -- Franmil Reyes homered and drove in five runs, Carlos Santana hit a home run and scored four times and the Cleveland Indians routed the St. Louis Cardinals 14-2 Friday night.

A group of approximately 100 protesters arrived outside Busch Stadium's left field gate during the top of the first inning, chanting, "no justice, no baseball." The crowd dispersed during the top of the second.

Friday was Jackie Robinson Day across the majors. Eleven big league games were postponed this week as teams protested racial injustice in the wake of Jacob Blake, a Black man, being shot by police in Wisconsin last weekend.

Tyler Naquin also homered as the Indians got 20 hits, seven for extra bases. Reyes, Roberto Perez and Delino DeShields each for three hits.

"I liked what we did offensively," Indians catcher Sandy Leon said. "I thought tonight we had great at-bats, we were taking pitches, we had a great game plan. It was nice to see everybody contribute to the W."

The Cardinals hadn't allowed 20 hits in a nine-inning game since 2016. Only one of St. Louis' six pitchers didn't give up a hit -- rookie infielder Max Schrock, who tossed a perfect ninth.

"They're looking to do damage on the plate," Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. "It's an offense that's clearly very capable, that's designed to do what they did."

Reyes launched a three-run drive in the first inning and the Indians boosted their lead to 6-0 in the second. Reyes, Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez each scored three runs.

Triston McKenzie completed four innings for the Indians in his second career start. He allowed two earned runs and three hits, striking out three and walking three.

"I just have to do a better job," he said. "The guys went out there and they put up six runs early, and I feel like I just have to do a better job as a starter to go out there and give them a couple more innings."

Cam Hill (1-0) got the win and Adam Plutko went four innings for his first save.

Daniel Ponce de Leon (0-3) managed to record only two outs, allowing four earned runs.

TOPEKA, Kan.–&nbsp;The Kansas State High School Activities Association Board of Directors voted to approve an optional alternative fall season for those schools which are unable to offer opportunities for student-athletes during the traditional fall season. This does not disrupt those schools which are offering practice and competitions at this time.&nbsp;It does provide an option for schools whose seasons are now, or later, unable to continue.

The plan was approved by the Board with 45 in favor and 29 opposed.&nbsp; This plan effectively provides:

-An opportunity for student-athletes to participate in their fall activity that is suspended for the traditional fall months;

-Allows those schools with more favorable conditions to continue to practice/play;

-Allows for individual schools to evaluate and decide best course of action for their respective activities;

-Allows for flexibility at the activity specific level as some activities may continue and while others are suspended (only those suspended would be eligible for the alternative fall season);

-Schools have been placed into bands (groupings) according to their classification for the purpose of determining appropriate spring sport start dates;

-Maximum for total number of weeks participating and number of contests (traditional and alternative fall seasons) is congruent to max allowed in traditional fall season;

-In the band of schools in Classes 1A-4A (amended from published agenda), if more than half of the total suspend one or more activities for the season, the spring sport season would have a delayed start and a later conclusion;

-In the band of schools in Classes 5A-6A (amended from published agenda), if more than half of the total schools suspend one or more activities for the season, the spring sport season would have a delayed start and a later conclusion;

-In each band, the spring season will start on time and conclude on time if less than half of the schools need to utilize the alternative fall season;

KSHSAA approves optional alternative fall season

Benton High School has announced the hiring of Chris Michaels as the Cardinals new girls' basketball coach.

Michaels, a 2009 Benton graduate, was originally hired this May by the Cardinals to be the top assistant on Kerstyn Bolton's staff, as well as an assistant football coach.

Bolton stepped down this summer and Benton turned to Michaels, who was the head coach of the North Andrew girls' basketball program the last two seasons.

Michaels takes over a Cardinal team that went 11-17 last season and 4-3 in the MEC.
