COLUMBIA, Mo. –&nbsp;After one of the finest quarterback performances ever by a Mizzou freshman Saturday, Mizzou QB&nbsp;Connor Bazelak&nbsp;is the SEC Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office. In addition to the weekly award from the SEC, Bazelak also earned spots on the Manning Award Star of the Week and Davey O’Brien Great Eight lists.

In his second career start, Bazelak engineered an unbelievable day for the Mizzou offense as the Tigers defeated No. 17 and defending national champion LSU, 45-41, Saturday at Mizzou’s Memorial Stadium. The win marked Mizzou’s first over a ranked opponent since Nov. 3, 2018, at No. 13 Florida and it was Mizzou’s first win over a defending national champion since Sept. 9, 1978, when Mizzou defeated fifth-ranked Notre Dame, 3-0. It was also Mizzou head coach Eliah Drinkwitz’s first win since taking over the program.

At 85.3 percent (29-of-34), Bazelak posted Mizzou’s best-ever completion percentage against a ranked opponent or FBS opponent, a mark that is also a Mizzou freshman record and ranks second in school history. The only performance better than Bazelak’s was Chase Daniel’s 94.1 completion percentage against Southeast Missouri during his senior season in 2008. He is just the fourth Mizzou QB to have an .830 completion percentage or better when passing at least 30 attempts; the other three – Drew Lock, Blaine Gabbert and Chase Daniel – are all currently in the NFL.

Bazelak’s passer rating of 242.4 was the sixth-best mark in program history, with the other five coming against SEMO, Iowa State, Missouri State, Nevada and Idaho for the best-ever rating against a ranked team for a Mizzou QB. Before Bazelak’s performance Saturday, the previous best rating by a Mizzou QB in an SEC game was Drew Lock’s 210.3 at Florida in 2018.

The redshirt freshman passed for over 406 yards and four touchdowns – the first Mizzou freshman to pass for four touchdowns in a game since Maty Mauk against Kentucky in 2013. Only five Mizzou QBs have ever thrown for more yards than Bazelak did Saturday – keep in mind it was his second career start. Bazelak led the offense to 586 total yards, including 406 through the air, and at one point completed 15 consecutive passes, the longest such streak since Chase Daniel had 20 straight against Buffalo in 2008. Bazelak’s streak ended on a ball he had to throw away after being flushed from the pocket on a bad snap.

Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak is SEC Freshman of the Week

Kansas State starting quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4036419/skylar-thompson">Skylar Thompson</a>&nbsp;will miss the rest of the season, coach Chris Klieman said on Monday.&nbsp; Thompson, who missed the Wildcats' 21-14 win over TCU, had surgery for "an upper-body injury" Klieman said.

"It was difficult, obviously, when you have a senior captain who goes down," Klieman said. "He's handled it well ... that's the worst part of this game because people know how much time and effort guys put in to have an opportunity to play this great game."

Thompson has started 30 games for Kansas State and ranks in the top 10 in team history in 14 career categories, including completion percentage (fourth), passing efficiency (fifth) completions (fifth) and rushing yards by a quarterback (fifth).

This season, Thompson threw for 626 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions while completing 62.5 percent of his passes. Thompson has also rushed for three touchdowns.

True freshman&nbsp;<a href="http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4429955/will-howard">Will Howard</a>&nbsp;started in Thompson's place and was 8-of-19 passing with an interception but ran for 86 yards and a touchdown.

The Wildcats (3-1, 3-0 Big 12), who are tied for first in the Big 12 standings, are idle this week. They return to action on Oct. 24 vs. rival Kansas.

Kanasas State quarterback Skylar Thompson done for season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has quickly earned a reputation for pulling off the seemingly impossible, whether it’s a no-look pass or a 70-yard heave or merely leading the Kansas City Chiefs to victory when all hope seems lost. 

But it was the Chiefs’ inability to execute the simple stuff that hurt them against the Las Vegas Raiders. They blew coverages, were penalized at the most inopportune times and were unable to get the kind of crazy plays late in the games that have bailed them out in the past.

Derek&nbsp; Carr was on point all game for the Raiders, dropping long passes into his wide receivers totaling 347 passing yards for 3 TDs.&nbsp; Carr's only mistake on the day came near the end of the first quarter when on a 3rd and 1, Carr tried to find tight end Darren Waller and overthrew him, resulting in an interception from Bashaud Breeland, who was in his first game back from a four game suspension.

The Chiefs were able to contain standout running back Josh Jacobs early, but were unable to stop him late in the game.&nbsp; Jacobs rushed for 77 yards and 2 TDs.&nbsp; The Chiefs also struggled to contain backup running back Devontae Booker, who added 62 yards on the ground.

Mahomes did all he could to keep his team in the game, throwing for 340 yards and 3 TDs.&nbsp; He did throw his first interception of the season in the fourth quarter, a pass intended for Travis Kelce.

The Chiefs unfortunately in this game lost left guard Kelechi Osemele&nbsp; as the offensive lineman stumbled to the turf attempting to block for Patrick Mahomes as he left the pocket.&nbsp; Osemele was carted off and later diagnosed as tearing tendons in both of his knees.&nbsp; It's sure to be a long term injury for the veteran, however no outlook was given on the time frame of his recovery.

The Chiefs also lost Sammy Watkins, but saw Mecole Hardman and Byron Pringle step up in his place, to a hamstring injury.&nbsp; There is also no timeline for his recovery at this time, but more could be known in the coming days.

Next up for the Chiefs, following the NFL reshuffling their schedule due to COVID-19 delayed games, the Chiefs will head to Buffalo for Monday Night Football to meet the Bills.&nbsp; Kickoff is set at this time for 4 pm

Chiefs defense struggles, mental mistakes down them in 40-32 loss to Raiders

AJ Parker returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown and Kansas State improved to 3-0 in the Big 12 with a 21-14 win at TCU. It was the Wildcats' FBS-best 119th non-offensive touchdown since 1999. 

True freshman quarterback Will Howard ran for a score and threw for 117 yards. Howard started in place of senior Skylar Thompson, who didn’t even make the trip to Fort Worth a week after getting injured in the first half against Texas Tech. 

TCU quarterback Max Duggan passed for 154 yards and had a 3-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-goal in the fourth quarter.

No. 3 Oklahoma, Texas Tech and TCU came into their matchup with the Wildcats after scoring 48, 56 and 33 points respectively in their previous game. Since halftime of their win over the Sooners, K-State is giving up about 4.9 points a quarter.&nbsp;

&nbsp; The Horned Frogs&nbsp;got&nbsp;out to an early lead in Fort Worth, with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7348">Blake Lynch</a>&nbsp;keeping K-State close with a pair of 25 and 53-yard field goals. The 53-yarder was a new career high for Lynch, who jumpstarted&nbsp;another dominant performance from the Wildcats on special teams. K-State also blocked a second-quarter TCU field goal attempt, the fourth game in a row where the Wildcats have blocked a punt or kick. The Wildcats currently lead the nation in both categories.&nbsp;&nbsp;

COLUMBIA, Mo. –&nbsp;Due to Hurricane Delta threatening the Baton Rouge, La., area this weekend, Mizzou Athletics and LSU Athletics have agreed to move Saturday’s game between the two schools to Mizzou’s Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Mo. The game between Mizzou and the reigning national champion LSU Tigers will kick at 11 a.m. on an ESPN platform to be announced.

“Due to the pending impact of Hurricane Delta on Louisiana and the surrounding area, it is in the best interest for the safety of everyone involved to move the game to Columbia,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said.&nbsp; “It was critical to relocate the game to an SEC campus where SEC COVID-19 management protocols are in place and readily applied.&nbsp; I appreciate the cooperation of the schools who are working closely to make the appropriate operational adjustments in order to prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes while accommodating this change in the schedule.”

While Mizzou is now hosting this game, it is considered an LSU home game.&nbsp;

Mizzou football against LSU moved to Columbia on Saturday, Kickoff time moved up 

&nbsp; The Northwest Missouri State University women's golf team will take to the course seven times this spring in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Division II Regional under the direction of head coach Andy Peterson. The Bearcats will open up its season Feb. 22-23 at the Northeastern State University Women's Golf Classic at The Club at Indian Springs in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Northwest will perform three times on the links in March. Northwest will take part in the&nbsp;Diffee&nbsp;For Lincoln Invitational at&nbsp;Kickingbird&nbsp;Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma, on March 8-9. Klieman, who led the Wildcats to eight wins and a bowl berth in his first season at K-State, is one of the winningest active head coaches in the country (82-19) and has continued to elevate the Wildcat program in just one-plus seasons at the helm. Under the terms of the new contract, Klieman will be paid an annual base salary of $3.1 million in 2021, $3.5 million in 2022, $4 million in 2023, $4.3 million in 2024, $4.3 million in 2025 and $4.3 million in 2026. Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

The postponed Patriots-Chiefs Week 4 game at Arrowhead has been rescheduled for Monday night at 7:05 p.m. ET (6:05 p.m. Kansas City time) <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/postponed-patriots-chiefs-game-being-planned-for-monday-night-pending-results-of">the NFL announced Sunday</a>. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

It is the second game this weekend that has been affected by COVID-19. After an outbreak on the Titans, the matchup between Pittsburgh and Tennessee was postponed - originally for a day or two, and then until Oct. 25 as the positive tests accumulated.

To fit it in, the Steelers' game against Baltimore that day was pushed back to Nov. 1.

The Patriots had been planning to fly to Kansas City on Saturday afternoon. Instead, players left the facility to await further instructions. The team said in a statement that the COVID-positive player has entered self-quarantine and that players, coaches and staff who were in close contact with him were tested Saturday morning and all were negative.

Earlier this week, Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty&nbsp;said the league might have grown overconfident after making it through training camps and the first two weeks of the season without a major outbreak.

''But at the end of the day, we are in a pandemic,'' he said. ''So what happened in Tennessee, although it kind of shocks us, it's not really surprising. I think we all knew at some point we might get some positive tests.

''So it's like, 'We got this,''' he said. ''I think this is just a little shocker, but it's also a wakeup call, like 'Hey, the virus is still here and it will affect any and everybody. It doesn't care that we're trying to play football.'''

Northwest Missouri State University volunteer assistant coach&nbsp;Quaid&nbsp;Curtin has been selected as a member of the United Soccer Coaches 30 Under 30 class. This year's class includes 15 men and 15 women selected from more than 550 applicants.

Curtin began at Northwest in 2010, working with the Bearcat women's soccer team as a student assistant/manager. Curtin received his bachelor's of science in therapeutic recreation in 2015. In addition, he&nbsp;received a minor in Gerontology, while being the second person to receive a Northwest certification in gerontology. After finishing his undergraduate degrees in 2015, Curtin became a graduate assistant for the Bearcat soccer team in 2016, studying applied health sports science in wellness.&nbsp;

Currently, Curtin is fulfilling the duties as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bearcat soccer program under the direction of head coach Marc Gordon. Holding his United States Soccer Federation E license, United Soccer Coaches GK1 Diploma, Curtin has gained various amounts of experience by working camps for the University of Missouri, Kansas Rush, Kansas Elite Soccer Club, Elkhorn High Schools, and by serving as the camp director for Bearcat soccer since 2015.

Northwest Missouri State assistant soccer coach named to United Soccer Coaches 30 under 30 class



KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The MIAA CEO Council met on Thursday, September 30 to discuss the start of the 2020-2021 winter sports season and a number of items in regards to fall sports potentially conducted in the spring of 2021.

With regards to the men's and women's basketball season, the group had discussions about the recently released&nbsp;<a href="http://fhsuathletics.com/services/go.ashx/fe2f8b24-32c0-43bf-90fe-92ec2713dca9?elinkdata=151217" target="_blank">NCAA Sports Science Institute's Core Principles of Resocialization of Collegiate Basketball.</a>&nbsp;The CEO Council noted concerns about the document's new testing recommendations and travel considerations for men's and women's basketball and it agreed to continue to monitor NCAA, CDC, and local government guidance on testing protocols and resources. At the present time, MIAA schools are planning to begin the college basketball season as scheduled, with practices beginning on October 15 and regular season games scheduled to tip-off on November 18 and 19.

The sports of men's and women's indoor track and field and wrestling were also discussed and the CEO Council agreed to provide institutional discretion with the start of each sport. The group noted that with no formal MIAA indoor track and field and wrestling schedules, each institution can determine the start date for those sports.

The MIAA will not develop a formal football schedule or conduct a cross country championship this academic year, and it will not crown a champion in either sport. MIAA football programs will be permitted to set up no more than four joint practices, scrimmages, or games with outside competition or other MIAA members this spring as each member institution deems appropriate for its program. As a result of this action, a few MIAA schools decided to pursue limited independent schedules in both sports this fall. These independent events are non-conference contests as permitted per NCAA regulations.

The CEO Council was also updated on the Association's Athletics Administrators Committee (AAC) review of possible formal 2021 spring seasons for volleyball and women's soccer. At the current time, and based on current health and testing conditions, it is the intent of the MIAA to offer sport seasons this spring for MIAA schools to compete against each other, and possibly non-conference opponents, in the sports of volleyball and women's soccer. Issues concerning the season structure, team schedules, conference awards and statistics, spring tournaments, and other sport issues will continue to be discussed by each sport's MIAA Monitoring Group.

Northwest Missouri State University senior Jackson Barnes is a semifinalist for the 2020 William V. Campbell Trophy®&nbsp;presented by Mazda. The National Football Foundation &amp; College Hall of Fame (NFF) set an all-time record of 199 semifinalists announced for one of college football's most sought-after and coveted awards.

Barnes will be a senior linebacker this fall for the Bearcat football squad. Barnes hails from Kansas City, Missouri, and is a graduate of Liberty High School. Barnes maintains a 3.96 grade point average with a major in chemistry: medicinal chemistry. Following graduation, Barnes plans to purse a doctorate of pharmacy.

He has been a four-time member of the&nbsp;MIAA's&nbsp;academic honor roll and he also earned&nbsp;MIAA&nbsp;Scholar-Athlete award in 2019. Barnes notched second-team&nbsp;all-MIAA&nbsp;status in 2019 as he helped lead the Bearcat football team to the program's 30th&nbsp;MIAA&nbsp;regular season championship. Barnes secured 74 tackles, three interceptions and 1 1/2 quarterback sacks as the Bearcats reached the NCAA Division II playoffs for the 16th consecutive season.&nbsp;

Barnes serves on Northwest's Unity Council as a team leadership member. He has volunteered community service time and to help with spring clean up in&nbsp;the city of&nbsp;Maryville.

Celebrating its 31st year, the award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. The NFF will announce 12-to-14 finalists in November, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the&nbsp;2020 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. Later this year, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 31st Campbell Trophy® Presented by Mazda, having his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000 and receiving his own 25-pound-bronze version of the iconic statue.&nbsp;

MSHSAA moves state football championship games out of Columbia

St. Joseph, Mo - As Missouri Western athletics continues on the path to a return, cross country will lead the pack. 

Head Coach Cody Ingold has announced an abbreviated 2020 schedule which includes two October dates, both serving as qualifiers for a Division II "National Invitational" event in November.  The schedule was created following the cancellation of the 2020 cross country season by the MIAA and the 2020 NCAA Division II Fall championships.  

"This is an awesome opportunity and a huge boost for morale,"  said Ingold.   "I want to thank our administration, our university and our supporters for their work and dedication to make this happen.  With so many 'unknowns', their efforts and communication have put us in the position to be ready at any time.  We are thankful that the time is now and we will be ready."

The Griffon men's and women's cross country squads will return to competition on October 16th at the Indian Hills Invitational in Ottumwa, Iowa.  The date is significant, marking the first official competition for a Missouri Western team since the COVID-19 pandemic halted all sports last March.  Griffon football will return to play on October 31st. 

"We are thrilled that our cross country teams are returning to competition," said Theresa Grosbach, associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. "We have been working collectively towards a safe return for our student-athletes since March. This is another critical step forward for our entire Athletic Department. We appreciate all of those who have made this possible, both on our campus and our external supporters."

Missouri Western's 17 NCAA teams have been practicing since late August, following strict protocols instituted by the campus, local health policy and the NCAA's Resocialization of Sport guidelines.

"Our student-athletes have been doing everything the right way,"  Ingold said.  "They have earned this opportunity and it's awesome that they have it."

Griffon cross country to compete in three events this fall

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (September 29, 2020) – The Kansas City Royals announced Tuesday that shortstop Adalberto Mondesi and right-handed pitcher Brady Singer have been named Royals Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for the month of September. The awards are determined by a local media vote.

Mondesi, 25, led the team in runs (22), hits (32), extra-base hits (14), RBI (20, tied) and on-base percentage (.408), and his 16 stolen bases led the Majors, seven more than anyone else. He became the eighth player in Major League history to record the combination of 14 extra-base hits and 16 stolen bases in a calendar month, and the first since José Reyes in April of 2007. Mondesi had a home run and a stolen base in three straight games from September 10-12, joining Bobby Abreu (May 12-15, 2004) as the only players since 1900 to accomplish that feat, according to Elias. He recorded a hit in nine straight at-bats from September 24-26, one shy of the club record set by Joe Randa from June 8-12, 1999. Mondesi walked twice during that stretch to mark 11 straight plate appearances reaching safely, matching the club record held by Randa, Steve Braun (August 7-17, 1978) and Amos Otis (April 30-May 2, 1970). He ended the season with 12 hits in 14 at-bats in the four-game set vs. Detroit, joining George Brett (September 12-14, 1975 vs. California) as the only players with 12 hits in a four-game series in Royals history, and he was the first American League player to accomplish that since Joe Mauer from August 1-4, 2016 at Cleveland. That performance earned Mondesi American League Player of the Week honors, as he led the Majors with a .615 average (16-for-26) over the final seven games of the season, including a three-game set vs. the Cardinals. This is Mondesi’s second Royals Player of the Month award and first since September of 2018.

Singer, 24, led the Royals with three wins, 29.2 innings, 30 strikeouts and a 2.73 ERA (9 ER in 29.2 IP) in five September starts. He recorded 15.0 consecutive scoreless innings over two-plus outings, including 8.0 innings of one-run ball on September 10 in Cleveland, in which he had a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the eighth. (September 29, 2020) – The Kansas City Royals announced Tuesday that shortstop Adalberto Mondesi and right-handed pitcher Brady Singer have been named Royals Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for the month of September. The awards are determined by a local media vote.Mondesi, 25, led the team in runs (22), hits (32), extra-base hits (14), RBI (20, tied) and on-base percentage (.408), and his 16 stolen bases led the Majors, seven more than anyone else. He became the eighth player in Major League history to record the combination of 14 extra-base hits and 16 stolen bases in a calendar month, and the first since José Reyes in April of 2007. Mondesi had a home run and a stolen base in three straight games from September 10-12, joining Bobby Abreu (May 12-15, 2004) as the only players since 1900 to accomplish that feat, according to Elias. Kansas State trailed by 21 points twice against the third-ranked Sooners, including a 35-14 deficit late in the third quarter. The Wildcats then scored 24 unanswered points en route to a 38-35 victory. It was K-State’s first road win ever over a team ranked in the top five of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

The 21-point comeback tied with four other games for the largest comeback in school history, however the contest at OU was the latest to start the comeback as the Wildcats’ began their 24-point run with 1:36 left in the third quarter.

K-State now has a pair of top-five victories in Klieman’s two seasons as head coach after the Wildcats defeated the fifth-ranked Sooners, 48-41, last season in Manhattan. It marked the first time in school history that Kansas State defeated a top-five team in consecutive seasons.

The Wildcats, now 1-1 on the year and 1-0 in Big 12 play, will host its conference home opener this Saturday against Texas Tech. Kickoff is slated for at 2:30 p.m., and the game will be shown on FS1.
