The Music City Bowl between Missouri and No. 15 Iowa that was scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled because COVID-19 issues left the Tigers unable to play.

Missouri athletic director Jim Sterk made the announcement Sunday afternoon after the Tigers saw increase of COVID cases within their program.

Mizzou head football coach Eli Drinkwitz allowed his players
go home for the holiday break, but says that is not to blame for the
cancelation. 

"For us to be belittled or beleaguered on social media, or for players to be challenged because they went home for Christmas is unfair," Drinkwitz said. "If they want to direct that at anybody, as the head coach, you can place the blame on my shoulders. But, our players didn't do anything wrong."

Mizzou has paused all football activities through Jan. 2.

Iowa’s regular-season finale against Michigan on Dec. 19 was also called
off after the Wolverines had COVID issues. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz says
it’s unfortunate to see the Hawkeyes’ season end this way.

"On behalf of our whole team, it's extremely disappointing to end our season this way," Ferentz said. "This is two games in a row now where we haven't been able to get to the finish line. So, it's certainly disappointing."

Iowa ends the 2020 season with a 6-2 record, while Mizzou
finishes at 5-5.

The Music City Bowl, which was to be played in Nashville, Tenn., is the second bowl called off since the postseason lineup was set on Dec. 20, joining the Gasparilla Bowl. 

Missouri is now the third SEC team that has had to pull out of its bowl game, joining Tennessee and South Carolina. &nbsp;Overall, 18 bowl games have been canceled this season.

Music City Bowl between Iowa and Missouri canceled

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson with just under two minutes left in Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons to give Kansas City a three-point lead. 

Then, the Chiefs watched as Pro Bowl kicker Younghoe Koo missed the tying field-goal with nine seconds left to give them a 17-14 win over Atlanta and the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. 

The Chiefs (14-1) won their NFL-record seventh straight one-possession game and matched a franchise record with their 10th straight win. The Falcons (4-11) lost by six points or fewer for the seventh time this season.

The Chiefs conclude the regular season on Sunday, Jan. 3 when they host a divisional rival in the Los Angeles Chargers. Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. central.

With seven receptions for 98 receiving yards in Sunday’s game, Chiefs TE Travis Kelce has accumulated 105 receptions for 1,416 receiving yards for the season - both career-highs. He becomes the first tight end in NFL history with multiple seasons of 100+ receptions in his career (2018 and 2020), while his 1,416 receiving yards are the most-ever by a tight end in NFL history.

Three K-State football players receive all-Big 12 honors Thursday

Central High School senior Ryley Wetlaufer officially signed her national letter of intent to play volleyball at North Iowa Community College (Mason City) Thursday.

As a setter, Wetlaufer tallied 291 assists, 141 digs, 26 aces and five kills in her senior season, earning her honorable mention All-Conference honors this fall.

The Central Indians team finished the 2020 volleyball season with a 10-13-4 record under second-year head coach Monica Flaska.

Receiver Tyreek Hill, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and linebacker Damien Wilson didn’t practice Wednesday, though Coach Reid said they’re all making progress. Hill is listed as day-to-day with a hamstring issue, but Reid believes he’ll be fine. Edwards-Helaire, who got hurt on Sunday against New Orleans, won’t be available this week, but is still on track to be back in time for the playoffs.

Kansas City (13-1) hosts Atlanta (4-10) this Sunday at noon.

Tyreek Hill misses practice Wednesday, Reid provides full injury report

Kansas City Chiefs rookie punter Tommy Townsend was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday after a massive performance against the New Orleans Saints in Week 15.

Townsend pinned the Saints' offense inside the 20 three times Sunday. In total, he had six punts for 243 yards with a long punt of 61. He also had a dropkick for 57 yards when the Saints forced a safety on Demarcus Robinson.

Townsend is the first punter in the NFL to earn the Special Teams Player of the Week award since Week 2 of the 2019 season.

Townsend is also now the third different member of the Chiefs to earn Special Teams Player of the Week honors this year, joining kick returner Byron Pringle (Week 7) and kicker Harrison Butker (Week 2).

The Chiefs (13-1) host the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday, Dec. 27, at noon.

No. 3 Kansas takes care of No. 7 West Virginia

The Missouri State High School Activities Association announced a modified schedule for its postseason wrestling championships Tuesday. These include changes to dates as well as the championships location.

The state championships will be broken down into five individual tournaments - one for each of the boys and girls' classifications. To comply with NFHS rules regarding the number of matches per day, the number of qualifiers in each weight class has bee&nbsp; reduced to twelve.

The top four finishers in each weight class from each district will qualify for the sectionals. The top three finishers from each weight class in the four sectionals will then qualify for the state championships.

The 2021 wrestling championships will now be held at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. The current postseason schedule is also subject to change.

Kansas State starts hot, rolls past Jacksonville Monday

After tallying 13 victories through their first 14 games, it's no surprise that the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are well represented on the 2021 AFC Pro Bowl roster.

The Chiefs earned seven nominations for a Pro Bowl that won't actually take place this year. This year's game will be held virtually and played on "Madden&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl">NFL</a>&nbsp;21." The Chiefs' seven selections include quarterback Patrick Mahomes,&nbsp;tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, left tackle Eric Fisher, defensive tackle Chris Jones, safety Tyrann Mathieu&nbsp;and defensive end Frank Clark.

Here's a closer look at all seven of the Chiefs' Pro Bowl nods.

Mahomes&nbsp;earned his third-consecutive nomination this year after compiling yet another MVP-worthy campaign. The 25-year-old quarterback leads the NFL in passing yards (4,462) to go along with 36 touchdown strikes and just five interceptions. Mahomes has thrown a touchdown pass in 24 consecutive games, which is the longest active streak in the league.

Kelce is putting together perhaps the best season at the tight end position in NFL history. With 1,318 receiving yards on the year, Kelce is just 59 yards shy of the all-time single-season receiving yards record by a tight end with two games to go. Kelce has 98 catches on the season, marking his third consecutive season with 95+ grabs.

Hill was named to his fifth-career Pro Bowl on Monday as he continues to find the end zone at the top rate in the NFL. Hill leads the league in total touchdowns with 17 (2 rushing, 15 receiving). The five-year veteran has tallied 1,211 receiving yards on the year and is just five catches shy of setting a new career high.

Fisher is back on the Pro Bowl roster this season for the second time in his career. The Chiefs' left tackle has started all 14 games this year. Fisher has also gotten into the end zone this season, catching a touchdown pass from Mahomes against Baltimore early in the year.

Jones earned his second-consecutive Pro Bowl nod. Jones' 52 pressures rank fifth among all defensive linemen in the NFL, per PFF, while his 18 quarterback hits lead that group. The five-year veteran has 6.5 sacks on the season to lead Kansas City.

Mathieu earned the second Pro Bowl nod of his career after tallying six interceptions so far this year. Mathieu ranks third in the NFL in picks and brought one back for a touchdown in Week 4 against New England.

ST. JOSEPH, MO -&nbsp;As the Sports Director for KFEQ Radio,&nbsp;Dave Riggert&nbsp;has provided the soundtrack for many of Missouri Western's greatest moments.&nbsp; Now,&nbsp;the outside "Voice of the Griffons" will officially join the Griffons. &nbsp;

Missouri Western State University Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics&nbsp;<a href="https://gogriffons.com/staff.aspx?staff=150">Dr. Josh Looney</a>&nbsp;has announced the hiring of Riggert as the athletic department's marketing and communications director, while maintaining his role as the Griffon&nbsp;radio and MIAA Network play-by-play voice. &nbsp;

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to officially bring Dave into the department," Looney said.&nbsp;"Anyone who has heard Dave call a Griffon game over the last decade knows that his talent and enthusiasm is unmatched, but his-behind-the-scenes work ethic and preparation will make him a tremendous and unique fit for our communications position. We believe we already have the best digital media department in the country. To have&nbsp;Dave in-house will only strengthen our position as an industry leader in that field."

Riggert's addition to the marketing and communications department, which includes&nbsp;<a href="https://gogriffons.com/staff.aspx?staff=3">Brett Esely</a>&nbsp;(senior associate athletics director-external relations) and&nbsp;<a href="https://gogriffons.com/staff.aspx?staff=6">Ryan Menley</a>&nbsp;(executive producer of digital media), solidifies a staff with a now-combined 50+ years of experience in working with and covering Missouri Western Athletics.

"Anyone who follows or is associated with Griffon Athletics already knows, loves and respects Dave," said Esely. "What they don't see is the meticulous preparation and behind-the-scenes work that he puts into every broadcast. That dedication will help make him a tremendous fit for his role as marketing and communications director."

Riggert served as the sports director for Eagle Radio in St. Joseph from 2009-2020, and has been the play-by-play voice for the Griffons since 2010. He has also done numerous Kansas State men's and women's basketball games on the K-State Sports Network.&nbsp;Prior to his arrival in St. Joseph, he was the sports director at Salina Media Group in Salina, Kansas from 2009-2010.

A native of Superior, Nebraska,&nbsp; Dave graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communications and was a four-year letter winner and two-time team captain of the Husker Track &amp; Field team.

Riggert lives in St. Joseph with his wife, Breann and three sons, Maxx, Quinn and Kree. He will begin his duties on January 4th, 2021.&nbsp;

Clyde Edwards-Helaire could return for Chiefs in the playoffs

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the New Orleans Saints, 32-29, to tally their 13th victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, holding off a late Saints' rally to secure a perfect record on the road and their ninth-consecutive win overall.

Kansas City built multiple double-digit leads throughout the contest, but in a matchup between two of the top teams in the NFL, the game came down to the wire before the Chiefs sealed it. Leading by three points following a Saints' score with just under two minutes left, tailback Le'Veon Bell bounced outside for five yards to move the chains and effectively end the game.

It completed a wild game that saw momentum swing both directions, but it certainly didn't start that way. In fact, in a matchup that was billed as a meeting between two of the top offenses in football, it was a defensive battle through the first several possessions of the game.

Mahomes finished the game with 254 yards and three touchdowns through the air in addition to 37 yards on the ground. Kelce led all receivers with 68 yards to go along with his score. Defensively, the Chiefs held New Orleans to just 1-of-11 on third down.

The win represented Kansas City's eighth victory on the road this season, marking the Chiefs' first perfect record away from their home field since 1966.

The Chiefs will return to Arrowhead for the final two games of the regular season, beginning with a matchup against the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday.

Chiefs beat Saints 32-29 on the road; finish road season 8-0

On Thursday Missouri Western opened a two game road trip in Pittsburgh, KS taking on the Pittsburgh State Gorillas.&nbsp; The Lady Griffons opened up the night getting off to yet another early lead, but would falter in the following quarters

The Griffons&nbsp; came out of the gate aggressive with full court pressure, to build an early 13-7 lead.  MWSU led 20-18 after one quarter.  It was all Pitt the rest of the way.  The Gorillas used a 22-2 second quarter run to take complete command, carrying a 48-33 lead to halftime and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way winning 96-75

The Griffons, who have struggled offensively this season,  shot 44% from the field and put up their largest point total since an 83-81 victory at Rogers State in the season opener on November 19th. 

 Camille Evans led MWSU with 15 points and six rebounds, marking the fourth time in six games the freshman has scored in double figures. Brionna Budgetts added 12 points, while Jordan Cunningham and Josie Weishaar finished with 10 points a piece

The Lady Griffons now sit at 2-4 on the season after starting off the season hot.

Pittsburg State rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to stun the #19 Missouri Western men 87-84 Thursday night in the Jungle.  

The Griffons who had scored 100-points in their last two games, kept that pace in the first half- shooting 51% from the floor, and built a 48-30 lead going to the break.  The Gorillas&nbsp; who shot 25.8% in the first frame, opened the second half on a 15-3 run to cut the Griffon lead to six with 14:34 remaining in the game. Western answered and stretched its lead back to 16 points, 76-60 with 7:06 to play, but PSU answered with another 14-2 run to get within four with under five minutes to play.

The Gorillas took their first lead of the game, 85-84, on two free throws with 27 seconds remaining.  Trailing 87-84 with 6.9 seconds remaining, Western's Q Mays missed a potential game-trying 3-pointer at the buzzer, sealing the fate on MWSU's first loss of the season.

PSU's Bobby Arthur-Williams led all scorers with 23 points. Tyrell Carroll led the Griffons with 23 points.  Mays added 14 and Will Eames recorded his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Western is now 4-1 on the season following the first loss in the Will Martin era.

Missouri Western will continue their road trip on Saturday when they head to Joplin for a matchup with Missouri Southern.&nbsp; The women scheduled to tip off at 1:30 pm and the men scheduled to tipoff at 3:30pm

Rescheduled date for Missouri Western and Northwest men announced

 Cross another player off Dayton Moore’s offseason wish list. The Royals' general manager was able to bring back closer Greg Holland on Monday, further stabilizing a bullpen that was a team strength in 2020.

Holland’s one-year deal is worth $2.75 million, a source told MLB.com, and has $1.5 million available in performance bonuses.

Holland, 35, went 3-0 and was six-for-six in save opportunities for the Royals last season with a 1.91 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP.

Holland will rejoin a bullpen that features Josh Staumont, Scott Barlow, Kyle Zimmer, Jesse Hahn and Tyler Zuber.

Of Holland’s 28 appearances, 23 were scoreless, which tied for third most in the Majors behind teammate Barlow (25) and the Angels’ Mike Mayers (24).

Holland finished the season with a 13 1/3-inning scoreless streak, which spanned his final 13 appearances from Aug. 26 through season’s end.

The 2020 season marked Holland’s second stint with Kansas City. He spent his first six seasons with the Royals from 2010-15.

Holland ranks fourth in franchise history with 151 saves, behind only Jeff Montgomery (304), Dan Quisenberry (238) and Joakim Soria (162).

The Royals now have 38 players on their Major League 40-man roster.

Chiefs secure comeback win over Dolphins 33-27

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians are changing their name after 105 years.

Citing three people familiar with the decision, The New York Times reported Sunday night that the team is moving away from a name considered racist for decades. The Indians have been internally discussing a potential name change for months.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press the franchise has no immediate comment on the report.

The Times said the team could make a formal announcement later this week. It’s not known when the name change will take effect or if the team has settled on a new moniker.

Cleveland’s move away from Indians follows a similar decision earlier this year by the NFL’s Washington Football Team, which was previously known as the Redskins.

For years, Native American groups and others have protested against Cleveland’s use of Indians as its name as well as other imagery used by the American League charter franchise founded in 1901. Last year, the team removed the contentious Chief Wahoo logo from its caps and jerseys, but the smiling, cartoonish mascot has remained popular and merchandise is still sold bearing its image.

The Indians have dealt with a backlash from fans upset over Chief Wahoo’s removal and the club is certain to hear more with the decision to change its name.

“Oh no! What is going on?” President Donald Trump tweeted. “This is not good news, even for ”Indians”. Cancel culture at work!”

In July, just hours after Washington’s plans became known after being pressured by several sponsors, including FedEx which holds naming rights to the football’s team’s stadium, Cleveland owner Paul Dolan released a statement saying the team would review “the best path forward with our team name.”

In the months since, the team has consulted players, front office members, coaching staff, community leaders, share holders and Native American groups.

A few days after Dolan’s statement, Indians manager Terry Francona said it was time to “move forward” with the name change.

“I’ve been thinking about it and been thinking about it before we put out that statement,” said Francona, who has been with the club since 2013. “I know in the past, when I’ve been asked about, whether it’s our name or the Chief Wahoo, I think I would usually answer and say I know that we’re never trying to be disrespectful.

“And I still feel that way. But I don’t think that’s a good enough answer today. I think it’s time to move forward. It’s a very difficult subject. It’s also delicate.”

Report: Cleveland Indians changing name after 105 years

Royals catcher Salvador Perez overcame not one but three major obstacles on his journey to being named the 2020 American League Comeback Player of the Year.

The six-time All-Star won the honor on Thursday after missing all of 2019 because of Tommy John surgery. He then missed the beginning of Summer Camp after testing positive for COVID-19. He also missed over three weeks during the season because of a rare eye condition that caused blurriness.

Perez wasn’t deterred. In 37 games in 2020, he hit 11 home runs and 12 doubles, drove in 32 runs and posted a .986 OPS. His efforts were good enough to earn him a spot on the All-MLB First Team, which was unveiled on Wednesday.

Perez is entering the final year of his contract with Kansas City.

Perez recorded a .353 on-base percentage and a career-high .633 slugging percentage, which was the second highest in franchise history behind only Hall of Famer George Brett, who amassed a .664 mark during his AL MVP Award-winning season in 1980. On Thursday morning the Kansas City Chiefs announced that tight end Travis Kelce was named the team's nominee for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award presented by Nationwide.

One of the NFL's highest individual honors, it recognizes an NFL player for outstanding community service activities off the field, as well as excellence on the field. Kelce is joined by 31 other candidates – one from each NFL team – who were also announced today.

For the third year in a row, all 32 team winners will be highlighted as finalists and recognized for their important work during the weekend leading up to Super Bowl LV. The 2020 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year will be announced during NFL Honors, a primetime awards special to air nationally the week of Super Bowl LV, on CBS.

All 32 nominees will receive a $40,000 donation in their name to their charity of choice. The winner of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of his choice. All donations are courtesy of the NFL Foundation and Nationwide. Along with the other 31 nominees, Kelce will wear a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year helmet decal through the end of the season in recognition of his accomplishments on and off the field.

Since arriving in Kansas City as a third-round draft pick in 2013, Kelce has focused on reaching youth in the communities that are near and dear to him. In 2015, he introduced his 87 &amp; Running Foundation to empower disadvantaged youth to achieve success by providing resources and support to their communities and cultivate their talents in the areas of education, business, athletics, STEM and the arts. To date, Kelce, through the 87 &amp; Running Foundation, has donated $750,000 for various charitable efforts, while another $250,000 is scheduled to be made before the end of this year.

In Kansas City, Kelce's focus has been fixated on Operation Breakthrough, which provides a safe, loving and educational environment for children in poverty and empowers their families through advocacy, emergency aid and education. After making numerous visits to Operation Breakthrough for events, fundraising opportunities and mentoring, Kelce's first major collaboration with the agency was the development of the 87 &amp; Running Robotics Lab in 2018, which remains accessible to nearly 200 students from three elementary schools as well as 100 high school freshmen in the area.

This summer, Kelce announced his largest contribution yet to Operation Breakthrough, a massive $500,000 donation to purchase a building adjacent to the current facility, which will be transformed into the Ignition Lab: Powered by 87 &amp; Running. At the time of the gift, Kelce noted his goal was to eliminate barriers that prevented teenagers from the urban core from exploring future careers in the STEM sectors. The Ignition Lab will help Operation Breakthrough serve youth up to the age of 18, after they would have traditionally aged out of Operation Breakthrough's services and resources past the age of 14.

The Missouri Western Men's Basketball team defeated Northeastern State 103-82 on Tuesday to move to 4-0 in the MIAA on the season, their best conference start since the 1997-98 season, when the Griffons opened with an 8-0 record in the MIAA . 

 The Griffons also surpassed the 100-point mark in their second straight game. This is the first time a Griffons men's team has done this since the 2001-2002 season

Playing in a Tuesday matinee rescheduled from November, MWSU shot 53 percent as a team and used another-well rounded scoring attack in Tahlqequah, with four players in double figures. 

 After sitting out Saturday's win over Central Missouri, junior point guard Tyrell Caroll returned from injury and led the Griffons in scoring with 21 points.&nbsp; Carroll has now reached 1,000 points for his career. 

 Caleb Bennett finished with 20, Will Eames added 16 points and 11 rebounds and JaRon Thames had 10 points.&nbsp; Through the first four games six Griffons are averaging double figure points.&nbsp; With the double double, Eames recorded his second of the season.

Missouri Western is receiving votes in the NABC Division II Top 25 poll.  The last time the Griffons were ranked was the 2002-2003 season.&nbsp; The Griffons are also one of four unbeaten teams in the MIAA.&nbsp; The Griffons lead the conference in scoring offense and offensive rebounding.

Up next the men were originally scheduled to play rival Northwest Missouri this Saturday, but due to positive COVID test on Northwest, that game has been postponed. 

The MWSU athletic department is actively looking for another opponent to fill the void this Saturday. If not filled, the men's next game will be at Pittsburg State on December 17.

Missouri Western men down Northeastern State in rescheduled game 103-82

The Kansas City Royals and free-agent first baseman Carlos Santana have agreed to a two-year, $17.5 million deal.&nbsp;The team officially confirmed following a physical Tuesday afternoon.

Santana, 34, hit just .199 with a .699 OPS over 60 games in 2020, though he did have an American League-leading 47 walks and a .349 on-base percentage.

The veteran switch-hitter earned his first All-Star selection the year before, recording a .281/.397/.515 slash line and tying a career high with 34 homers.

Santana has played 11 big league seasons -- 10 with the Indians spanning two stints and one with the Phillies. He’s a lifetime .248/.366/.446 hitter with 240 homers and 991 walks in 1,495 games.

Santana could function as the Royals’ starting first baseman, with Hunter Dozier moving across the diamond to take over at third base for Maikel Franco, who was non-tendered.

Missouri Western, Northwest men postponed yet again; Women still set to play

After a home opening victory, Griffon Women's Basketball rode that momentum for a quarter but couldn't sustain in falling to #21 Central Missouri 67-48.

The first quarter was a defensive struggle as both teams shot a cool 21% from the field as UCM scored the game's first six points.  However, the Griffs found their range and battled as a Josie Weishaar three point make put the Griffs ahead to which they lead 11-9 at the quarters' conclusion. 

Central Missouri went on a 13-2 run to begin the second quarter to take control of the game and lead 32-21 at the halftime break.  After a three point make in the first quarter, Weishaar hit two more in the second quarter which accounted for the only makes from the behind the arc in the first half for the Griffs.

After being outscored by eight in the third quarter, the Griffs made a run in the fourth quarter and pulled within 10 with 4:00 to go but could not come all the way back before being defeated by the final margin.

After having the hot hand in the first half, freshman Josie Weishaar led the Griffons finishing with a career 16 points and pulled down four rebounds.  Freshman Camille Evans posted double figures for the third time in four games with 10 points while freshman guard Brooke Brown dished out a career high three assists.

The Griffons even their record at 2-2 while Central Missouri moves to 4-0 on the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is just the second home loss under Candi Whitaker as her record on Tom Smith Court is now 15-2.

Missouri Western's men improved to 3-0 on the season under first year head coach Will Martin with a 100-81 victory to wrap up the doubleheader.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The last time the Missouri Western men were 3-0 in the MIAA, most of the current team wasn't even born yet. With the Griffons win on Saturday night the team is off to their best conference start since the 1998-99 season. 

Taking the floor without injured All-MIAA First Team point guard Tyrell Carroll,  the Griffons didn't skip a beat, leading wire-to-wire. MWSU nailed 15 three-pointers going 15 for 35 from beyond the arc, and were paced by five Griffons in double figures. 

 Reece Glover scored a team-high 20 points , with Q Mays, Will Eames and JaRon Thames adding 16 points each.  St. Joseph native and Lehigh transfer Caleb Bennett added 12 points.  Mays had five of the team's 20 assists from the point guard position.  Sam Siganos had three steals in six minutes.  

Twelve Griffons scored in the game and all 16 eligible players played in the contest.  The game was also littered in fouls and free throws.  The two teams went to the line a combined 79 times.  UCM went 35-45 and MWSU went 25-34 from the charity stripe.
