Mizzou Arena to serve as polling location in 2020 election

DETROIT -- Miguel Cabrera hit a homer and a double to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-0 on Tuesday night.

Matthew Boyd (2-6) bounced back from a rough outing with a strong performance, throwing five-plus scoreless innings and giving up just two hits. Boyd allowed seven runs over three-plus innings in his previous start as Milwaukee beat Detroit 19-0 last week.

"Matty is one of our veterans so we expect that from him," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Jakob Junis (0-2) started in place of Danny Duffy, who missed the team's flight to Detroit. Junis gave up five runs and seven hits over 2 1/3 innings.

"It's different, but I'm definitely not going to blame that on what happened," Junis said. "Things happen, and you've got to adjust on the fly. When my name's called, I have a job to do."

Junis said he didn't notice Duffy was missing on the flight and was told about seven hours before the game on Tuesday that he was starting.

"These sort of things always happen," manager Mike Matheny said. "But it's definitely different than knowing you've got the ball and have four days to prepare."

Detroit had lost three straight and 10 of its last 13 games. Kansas City had won six straight.

The rebuilding Tigers (21-26) and last-place Royals (20-29) are the two teams in the AL Central with losing records, making developing prospects even more of a priority during the pandemic-shortened season.

"We're still in this thing," Boyd said. "Our goal is to play this all the way through."

Kansas City failed to capitalize on a good chance to score in the first inning when Whit Merrifield led off with a double and reached third on a stolen base with one out. Merrifield did not score on a play at the plate in which he did not slide after Salvador Perez hit a grounder to drawn-in shortstop Willi Castro.

Niko Goodrum, in his first at-bat after being on the 10-day injured list, hit an RBI single in the first. Jorge Bonifacio, released last year by Kansas City, followed with a two-run double to give Detroit a 3-0 lead.

That was plenty of support for Boyd, who struck out five and walked four.

"It was awesome to get the bats going and have the guys do their thing, right from the get-go," Boyd said.

His 105-pitch outing ended with two on and two outs in the sixth and Edward Olivares hit into an inning-ending groundout.

"I feel stronger than I ever have," Boyd said.

Royals: IF Matt Reynolds cleared outright waivers and was sent to Triple-A.

Tigers: C Grayson Greiner was optioned to to the team's alternate training site and C Eric Haase was recalled from Toledo, Ohio.

Royals: RHP Matt Harvey left the game after the team's athletic trainer visited the mound in the sixth. Harvey struck out the first two batters he faced before giving up a homer, double and single.

Tigers: Infielder Jonathan Schoop was put on the the 10-day DL with a sprained right wrist.

Royals: Rookie Brady Singer (2-4) is scheduled to start after not giving up a hit until there were two outs in the eighth inning against Cleveland last week.

Tigers: Rookie Tarik Skubal (1-2) is expected to be on the mound after giving up six runs over just two innings against St. Louis.

Royals get blanked by Tigers 6-0 in series opener

MILWAUKEE -- Christian Yelich broke out of his slump with a home run and three hits, Ryan Braun also went deep and the Milwaukee Brewers romped to an 18-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Keston Hiura and Daniel Vogelbach also homered for the Brewers.

Well after the game was out of hand, both managers were ejected following a catcher's interference call on Yadier Molina that led to a tense confrontation in front of the Brewers' dugout.

Milwaukee jumped on St. Louis early, a night after the teams combined for only eight runs in splitting a doubleheader in which both games went to extra innings.

With St. Louis leading 1-0 in the first, Yelich and Braun hit back-to-back solo home runs off Jack Flaherty (3-2). Neither was hit particularly hard. And Flaherty, who had allowed two runs or fewer in five of his six previous starts, showed some dominance, as six of the first seven outs he recorded were strikeouts.

But Yelich, who singled, and Braun, who walked, hurt Flaherty again in the third inning. They scored on a double by Vogelbach, a designated hitter claimed off waivers Sept. 3.

The game broke loose in the fourth, after Flaherty gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases. There were still no outs when three runs crossed the plate, giving Milwaukee a 7-1 lead, and Flaherty was pulled.

Jake Woodford came on and gave up a three-run homer to Hiura that put Milwaukee up 11-1. The solo shot by Vogelbach came in the seventh, off Nabil Crismatt.

Cardinals pitchers entered Tuesday having given up the fewest home runs in the National League.

Milwaukee left-hander Brett Anderson (3-3), scratched from his last scheduled start on Sept. 12 because of a tight right hip, pitched five innings. He gave up an RBI double and a bases-loaded walk, both to Paul Goldschmidt.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell acknowledged before the game that he considered resting Yelich, who went 3 for 4 with two singles. Before the homer, the 2018 NL MVP had seen his average dip below .200, as he went 1 for 18 with 12 strikeouts over his last five games.

"Obviously it's been a struggle up there, to say the least," Yelich said. "It's baseball. You're going to go through it. It's going to happen. Sometimes there's no explaining it. It's how the game works."

Counsell and Cardinals manager Mike Shildt were ejected in the fifth, with Milwaukee leading 13-2, after Braun was awarded first base on the interference call. Shildt examined Molina's left arm, then he and Molina approached the Milwaukee dugout and exchanged words with Brewers players. Players from both teams' dugouts and bullpens massed in front of the Milwaukee dugout, but that was the extent of it.

Shildt said he didn't blame Braun, but was upset because it was only the second time in Molina's career that Molina has been called for interference. "I go to check on him and make sure he's OK and hear something out of the (Brewers) dugout," Shildt said. "We don't start things, but we're not going to take it. Heard something I didn't appreciate. I will always have our players' backs."

Said Counsell: "Apparently there was a little miscommunication between (Shildt) and our dugout, him and me, I should say, him and me."

With no off days during the first three rounds of the playoffs, under the schedule announced Tuesday, Counsell said that "I understand that's how we have to do it, but that is a significant change in the rules for the postseason, a very significant change in the rules for postseason. It affects how your roster's made up, without a doubt, and it will affect, definitely, pitching strategy -- not so much the first round, but after the first round."

Shildt said of the quarantining required by the playoff schedule: "I'm a take it as it comes kind of person. It is what it is. Everyone's having to do it. I think if you keep the mental edge and know that that's the situation, you make the best of it."

Cardinals: RHP Johan Oviedo was expected to rejoin the team Tuesday evening and is expected to start the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader, Shildt said. Oviedo was put on the injured list Sept. 10 after he came into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. ... 2B Kolten Wong was scratched from the lineup with discomfort on his left side. He was replaced by Tommy Edman.

A full slate of pitchers for Wednesday had not been announced. St. Louis RHP Adam Wainwright (4-1, 2.91 ERA) will start the first game of the doubleheader. The 39-year-old has pitched six or more innings, including a complete game, in each of his last five starts. RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-3, 3.40) will start one of the games for Milwaukee.

record-setting performance for Ehlinger included 424 passing yards and five
touchdowns in the first half against UTEP to set Longhorn single-half records.
He finished 25-for-33 with career-highs of 426 yards and five touchdowns
through the air. That marks the third-most prolific passing game, in terms of
yardage, in school history, and is tied for the second-most passing touchdowns
in a single game on UT record. On Sunday, Ehlinger was tabbed the Walter Camp
Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week. 

Merriweather,
who led the NJCAA in tackles a year ago before transferring to Texas
Tech,&nbsp;led all Big 12 players with 12 tackles in Texas Tech's victory over
Houston Baptist. He became the first Red Raider since 2000 to record double
digits in tackles during a season opener. Merriweather's ranked tied four
fourth nationally in the FBS.

Johnson, the
back-up for the Sooners, handled all of OU's kicking duties in the 48-0 shutout
over Missouri State. The redshirt senior, whose only career appearance entering
the night had been for an on-side kick attempt last season, was 2 for 2 on
field goals (22 and 42 yards), made all six of his PATs and kicked off nine
times.

In his first
career start, and in only one half of work, Rattler completed 14-of-17 passes
for 290 yards and four touchdowns without an interception against Missouri
State. He became the first OU freshman QB to throw four TD passes in his first
start. His passing efficiency rating set Big 12 and Oklahoma freshman records
and was the third-highest in OU history regardless of class.

The league
offensive honor is the second for Ehlinger in his career, while the remaining
winners are first-time recipients.

Big 12 hands out weekly football awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Brad Keller pitched his first major league shutout, tossing a five-hitter as the Kansas City Royals won their sixth in a row by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-0 on Sunday.

Keller (4-2) was in total command, allowing only three hits until the ninth inning.

"I just wanted to do this for our bullpen," he said. "I felt like we used their aggressiveness to our advantage and it was just fun today."

Making his 55th career start in the big leagues, he struck two, walked one and threw 111 pitches. It was his second complete game in the majors.

"He was so in control today," Royals manager Mike Matheny said.

So few strikeouts "means trusting the guys behind him. This is a big deal for our pitchers and I think it sends a message to the rest of our staff," Matheny said.

Salvador Perez and Hunter Dozier homered to help Kansas City win its second consecutive series after losing its previous eight. Pittsburgh lost its fourth game in a row.

"They're playing well right now," Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. "They're coming off a sweep of Cleveland, one of the best teams in baseball and they're doing a nice job. They're creating a lot of opportunities for themselves, their bullpen is pitching well."

The Royals thrived off Chad Kuhl (1-2) who couldn't find the strike zone. He walked six, helping set up nine runs in 2 1/3 innings. Only 31 of his 70 pitches were strikes.

After giving up a single in the third, he walked three of the next four batters and was yanked. Nick Tropeano relieved him and proceeded to walk Nicky Lopez, then give up a two-run single to Whit Merrifield that made it 9-0.

Seven Royals starters had an RBI with Merrifield and Salvador Perez both having a pair.

Maikel Franco drove in a run in the first inning after singles by Merrifield and Perez. Alex Gordon also tacked on an RBI later in the inning.

The Pirates caught a bad break on the next batter when a wild pitch ricocheted off the home plate umpire nearly into the Royals dugout. Dozier and Alex Gordon both scored on the play.

"We tell our guys to keep thinking about the next base," Matheny said. "Just a smart play by Hunter."

Pirates: Begins a four-game series against Cincinnati including a doubleheader on Monday.

Royals: Have the day off on Monday before facing Detroit for a two-game series. They haven't played the Tigers since July.

Cardinals fall to Reds in series finale 10-5

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Jonathan Adams Jr. caught a career-high three touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 38 seconds remaining, and Arkansas State defeated Kansas State 35-31 on Saturday for the Red Wolves' first win over a Power 5 opponent in a dozen years.

Layne Hatcher threw a 17-yard pass to Adams for the winning score after the Wildcats (0-1) had taken a 31-28 lead on a Blake Lynch 35-yard field goal with 2:30 remaining.

"Obviously excited about the win," said Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson. "Excited, but not surprised."

Arkansas State (1-1) scored 21 unanswered points after trailing 21-7 midway through the second quarter.

Most of the offense flowed through the 6-foot-3 Adams.

"The quarterbacks put the ball in a good spot, and I just use my athleticism to turn my hips and go get the ball and go over the corner's head and stuff like that," said Adams, who had 98 yards receiving on eight catches.

Arkansas State held Kansas State to 91 yards rushing. The Wildcats averaged 178 rushing yards per game in 2019.

"We were able to create some penetration, create some issues where they could not get downhill all night long," Anderson said.

Kansas State (0-1) had not dropped its home opener since 2013.

"It wasn't the outcome that we wanted. We didn't play particularly well. I know what the guys have gone through over the past month to five weeks trying to prepare to play, and we can't make excuses," said Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman.

Skylar Thompson finished with 259 yards passing and two touchdowns in the loss.

"There are three or four (passes) that I can think of that were just inches off, or I missed a throw or misjudged on a ball and just couldn't get on the same page there a couple times," Thompson said.

Deuce Vaughn led Kansas State in rushing with 47 yards and a touchdown, becoming the first true freshman to score for the Wildcats in a season opener since 1988.

The Wildcats scored on their first possession on a 17-yard catch by Phillip Brooks following a blocked punt. They added TDs on consecutive drives in the second quarter to lead 21-7. Arkansas State: The quick tempo and aggressive play-calling kept the Red Wolves in the game and proved to be the difference. Arkansas State kept the Wildcats' ground game in check.

K-State upset by Arkansas State 35-31 in season opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Adalberto Mondesi homered and stole a base for the third consecutive game, Kyle Zimmer got his first career win after a winding path to the major leagues and the Kansas City Royals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4 on Saturday night.

Whit Merrifield added a solo homer and the Royals won their fifth straight game. It was the third consecutive loss for Pittsburgh.

Mondesi and Bobby Abreu in 2004 are the only players to homer and steal a base in three straight games since at least 1901, according to MLB.com.

"He just continues to take great at bats and making things happen," manager Mike Matheny said.

Zimmer (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk and striking out one. The 28-year-old was the fifth overall pick in the 2012 draft by Kansas City but didn't debut in the majors until last season due to recurring shoulder issues that threatened to end his career.

"I just got a bunch of milk and barbecue sauce dumped on me," Zimmer said. "It's hard to look back and it's been a long road with a lot of years of grinding, but I just try to stay in the moment."

After struggling through 15 outings last season in his first taste of the majors, Zimmer owns a 1.35 ERA in 13 appearances this season.

Zimmer relieved Carlos Hernandez after the right-hander allowed solo homers by Josh Bell, Bryan Reynolds and Adam Frazier.

"I thought he had really good stuff today," Matheny said. "Even his misses were close misses and there's a few things he needs to continue to work on."

Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his fifth save.

Mondesi tied it at 3 with his two-run homer in the third inning. He has four homers in the past six games after failing to hit one in the first 41 games of the season.

Trevor Williams (1-7) took the loss for the Pirates, allowing 10 hits and six runs in five innings.

"It's just the consistency of execution," Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. "We see it in stretches and then he loses it during the game. We got to get him back on track executing in his zone."

Merrifield led the bottom of the first off with a home run, his ninth on the year.

Salvador Perez hit an RBI single that scored Mondesi after he singled and stole second to put the Royals up 4-3. Olivares and Gordon also had RBI in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-3.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kris Bubic worked hard through five innings to earn his first major league win as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 Friday night for their fourth straight victory.

Bubic (1-5), the second of four pitchers from the first round of the 2018 draft to debut for Kansas City in 2020, faced baserunners in every inning, but only allowed one run on six hits in five innings.

The 23-year-old lefty won in his eighth big league start. He walked two and struck out six, five of those coming with runners in scoring position.

Greg Holland pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

Royals star catcher Salvador Perez came off the injured list and hit a double and single. He had missed the last 20 games with fluid on his left eye.

Adalberto Mondesi homered, scored three runs and stole two bases for the Royals. Maikel Franco hit a pair of RBI singles.

Steven Brault (0-3) allowed three runs on five hits in four innings.

Adam Frazier saw his 12-game hitting streak snapped. It was the longest hitting streak for the Pirates this season.

Mondesi's third home run of the season, all in the last five games, put the Royals up 1-0 in the first. He also extended his hitting streak to eight games, tying his career high.

The Royals got two more runs in the third. Franco hit an RBI single and Perez scored on a wild pitch.

The Pirates cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth, but Bubic escaped trouble for the second time in three innings. After getting out of a first-and-third jam with no outs in the second by striking out the side, Bubic faced the same situation in the fourth.

He gave up an RBI double to Jacob Stallings, putting runners on second and third, still with no outs. But Bubic then retired the next three batters on an infield popup, a strikeout and a flyout.

Mondesi scored three runs, the last coming in the seventh when he led off with a walk, stole two bases and scored on Franco's second RBI single.

Josh Bell's two-run homer in the eighth drew the Pirates to within 4-3.

Pirates: Placed RHP Tyler Bashlor on the 10-day Injured List with lower back inflammation. LHP Austin Davis was recalled.

Royals: Optioned C Maibrys Viloria to the alternate site.
